Hmmmmm...

Hello there once more, Sidepodfans. We find ourselves approaching another weekend and an action packed Friday is looming but there's so much to look forward to today! I mean, first off, it's a Formula 1 weekend over at Valencia so keep an eye out for the Free Practise session and much more relevant information in the Race Info thread as always. As well as that we'll have another fabulous Wimbledon post from resident tennis expert Lou to take us through Day 5! Woohoo! You could always head over to my blog too and see What If the silly season rumours were true?! Much better than that though, there's the challenge that is the Viva F1 European GP quiz too, if you fancy the challenge as the Viva F1 quizzes are always worth a go and Jackie always does a top job with them. And finally, IT'S FRIDAY! So let's have an awesome day, no matter how... manic... it may be...

Paddock News

Faster...for Fernando - Ol' Anando is a bit concerned about 2011 as he reckons it's been a pretty poor year so far for the prancing horses of Italy. He says that a team like Ferrari need to be winning every race. He must be confusing them with Red Bull. He should actually be wondering why his team keep supplying their number one driver with such massive caps.

All He Makes is Entertainment - It seems Lewis has come out and said he'll be on full attack this weekend. I suppose that means better rear wings and chassis protection for everyone else then. In all seriousness, Lewis has no reason to change his style of driving but he really needs to stop being as reckless as he has been recently. We all know the man can drive but where's the smooth Lewis of previous years? I do like how Eddie Irvine says Lewis has lost the plot. Eddie Irvine.

Indian Summer - Introducing the world's longest headling as courtesy of AUTOSPORT, Adrian Sutil's future once again has been talked about with regards to whether he'll be in Force India much longer. How many more chances will he get before he's swiftly booted out for Nico Hulkenburg? Can't be long now. Perhaps Adrian is keeping his job by keeping Vijay entertained with his mad running skills.

Elsewhere...

Motorcycle Numptiness - I just had to include this. It's probably been shared but it should be shared a million times as it's just astounding stuff. There was a motorcycle crash as you can see and these poor drivers were just wanting to jump back on and well.... their bikes had other ideas. And it made for an excellent pun if I may say so myself.

The Future Has Been Here 4 Ever - One again Codemasters have got themselves all ready to build up to the release of F1 2011 in September and we are lucky enough to have the first dev diary from the development team to watch and a bit of Anthony Davidson to enjoy too. The game looks fantastic already, much less... yellowy... than last year graphically and I already love the out of car stuff in the garage celebrating. Plus, SPLIT SCREEN MULTIPLAYER!!

You Stole the Rings from Our Heart - I wonder how many rings that damn Sonic has stolen over the years. But you may be happy to know our favourite blue Hedgehog that SEGA so lovely introduced to us is now 20 years old which kind of scares me a little bit but also amazes me at the same time. Shame the blue legend has had a rough few years in terms of pretty terrible games but we can still celebrate the classics on the SEGA Megadrive/Genesis. Oh, and his name is Robotnik. It will always be Robotnik. Stoopid 'Eggman'.

Itty Bitty Links

So much to share with you today... I'll try not to overwhelm you with what I have to offer!

  • Worth starting on an F1 related note, as it seems we'll be getting a fancy little segment on the BBCF1 this weekend with McLaren and the presenting team doing a pit stop. I suppose they already have good experience of loud cars and pitlanes...
  • Next up - fancy a fun, addictive, darned sweet game to play on your iOS device this weekend? Why not give the brand spanking new Tiny Towers a go where you have to keep building business up to build up your tower block. It's free and it's absurdly addictive. And it's free. Did I mention it's free?
  • You do know I like to throw in a little musical number to my daily posts so why not give a quick listen to what I can't stop humming right now? It's To Build a Home by the Cinematic Orchestra and it's just absolutely stunning. Do enjoy.
  • Whilst I'm talking music, does anyone else not hear the Thomas the Tank Engine themein the new Bombay Bicycle Club song? I think I quite like it but I can't help but hear the Thomas theme. Every. Single. Time.
  • And finally, what better way to finish than with the combination of cake and Doctor Who? Awesomeness.

That's me sorted. It's Friday so that means the weekend is nearly here and I cannot wait. Remember to head over to the Wimbledon thread and join in if you're watching the tennis and the same goes for the Free Practise sessions too, we do love a good chat in the comments. To end I'll share with you a trailer to a film that looks AWESOME. See you soon chaps.

Love Alonso as Mario but I don't see him as the Princess-saving type. Wonder who'd play Luigi. Someone in green? Heikki or Jarno? :)

Also: 'Motorcycle Numptiness' is a pure genius name

    Love the daily.

I have never seen bikes interlock like that with the throttles jammed open. I love that the rider thought he was somehow going to jump in and sort it out.

not sure if anyone's following the saga of apple's new 'final cut' software. we use it to make sidepodcast videos and i've been waiting between 18 months and two years for an update because it the old version was falling woefully behind the competition.

finally they released it. and it's a bit... crap.

as of right now, none of our old projects can be opened. that's more than 40 podcasts that are effectively dead on the disk, and it gets worse. in the US store alone there are 386 one star reviews (five being good, one being awful) and 33 pages worth of comments, most of them negative.

someone today described this as apple's "vista" moment and they're not far wrong. it's not a product that affects many people, but it's by far the worst release i've ever witnessed from apple.

    i'm now downloading adobe premiere.

I had no idea Apple was capable of such a screw up. That level of incompetence is unbelievable. I imagine Steve Jobs is banging heads together now.

Never seen such a black and white response. Either 5 or 1 and little in the middle.

You only need to reed some of the comments on Pogue's own post to see that a lot of people are very unhappy and unable to use the new version

a bigger concern is we use logic pro for all our audio work. that equals hundreds of podcasts. i dread to think what carnage they could cause once they turn their attention to making audio applications "awesome".

i think relying on apple to create professional applications might be considered a risky strategy, so at some point we out consider a plan-b. this week though, i'll be making the best of what they've given us.

The good thing is you are only making one podcast a week. I imagine anyone making serious professional video will be most put out.

I still find it hard to believe Apple did this so badly. It is most unlike them to have their fans so upset at them

It's almost like Apple need two different products and instead they have decided to annoy a lot of their existing users to do some kind of land grab for new users

agreed. i just don't know how many casual users, making home movies of their kids will pay £270 so they can edit them a bit better. whereas all the pro's were happy to pay £700 for something that worked.

OMG. So what tickets do you have?

  • Amy24/06/2011 at 03:22

as well as that amazing athletics one today i also bought rowing (which should hopefully be full of kiwis, i need at least one patriotic event!) handball, volleyball and hockey. I wanted mens basketball too but they all clashed with other stuff. I was tempted by the closing ceremony too but it was too dear. I'd pay a lot for opening but not closing.

Indeed. I never really watched closing, myself. :) You also got tennis tickets in the lottery, right?

  • Amy24/06/2011 at 03:34

yep got tennis and swimming. Really wanted the other tennis final and would have paid the maximum for them, wish i could go back in time and change my ballot application! There will be more tickets released throughout the next year too so you never know what might come up.

  • gravit824/06/2011 at 04:02

So, as much as I'd like to join you all at 2am my time to watch P1 live and generally hang out...I can't...BECAUSE I GOT A JOB INTERVIEW!!! (at 9AM my time).

I know it shouldn't be a huge deal, but I got laid off 1 year, 1 month and 23 days ago, and the interviews haven't been very numerous.

I will however make every attempt to join SPC for FP3 and quaily...and the race.

  • gravit824/06/2011 at 04:04

And, WOW Amy, you really love your sports eh? I'd much rather spend that kind of dosh on an F1 trip-stavaganza to someplace exotic myself, but I suppose we've all got our absurdly expensive dreams haven't we?

I have spent that kind of dosh on an F1 trip-stravaganza many times, 2012 will be the first year since 09 that I won't be :) Pretty much all of my savings go on sports. I've dreamed of going to the Olympics years before I ever dreamed of going to an F1 race :)

Just in case anyone was wondering, I might be working at the local Harley Davidson dealership. I'm not exactly a huge loud shiney motorcycle guy, but I'll take whatever I can get. Nice people, and I'm not nearly as freaky as most of the ppl wh owrk there already - I got no tatts and no piercings. I'll be the odd one out, for once the most normal one tho

  • gravit824/06/2011 at 04:08

Amy, follow your folley. Mine is beer, F1, and science fiction, in that order

  • gravit824/06/2011 at 04:11

Maybe someday I'll be able to make the trip around Europe I've dreamed about, ever since I realized most of my fellow Americans were...uhh....ummm....just a little short on sophistication (basically the first time I ever saw a NASCAR race).

Proper beer does not come in a bright red aluminum can, and is not made from rice, IMHO.

Now to watch some Spaced, and dream Simon Pegg odd dreams.

  • gravit824/06/2011 at 04:13

Can't wait to see what happens with the new engine mapping rules in effect.

Any RBR speculation? I can't be the only one hoping they're utterly useless this weekend, right? LH needs a little help to get back on his game.

    night all

  • Amy24/06/2011 at 04:24

We celebrate the shortest night of the year, and people of all ages brings their fireworks to make it a little bit longer.

It's, in my opinion, the best celebration of the year. I'll show you some photos later :)

Okay, two weeks ago I was here complaining about how apparently someone in Seoul had got hold of my debit card number, and there were over $500 worth of charges against my account. I went down to my bank, filled out the paperwork, cancelled my card, and filed for reimbursement of the bad charges.

The bank was great, took care of everything for me and credited my account for all the bad charges within days of filing the paperwork.

Yesterday, the credited me again for the bad charges. The bank gave me too much money. Now, just to keep things in balance in the world, I need to go down to the bank and make them aware of this.

Somehow I doubt they'll let me keep the money for my honesty. :)

there must be a lot of people out there who spell microsoft with a dollar sign hiding under their beds pretending this isn't happening because Apple are perfect and never get anything wrong and everything they make is the best product ever.

I've always been bothered by that sort of product partisanship. To me it's simply a matter of a tool, and which one works best for whatever purpose you're using it for. Defending a company that makes a tool that you favor always seemed a little weird to me.

Indeed, and even if you do have a preference it doesn't mean you need to automatically slag off every thing the other company does, you never know, they may have actually made something good :)

    Ouchie! My sympathies.

This sort of catastrophe actually crossed my mind the other day when I downloaded some digital media and they offered me a free trial of their "cloud".

I keep pretty good track of my stuff by I am seriously considering using some sort of cloud storage. I use DropBox now, and like it, but only have the smallest setup.

You can always get some file-restoring program to minimize the damage. If you haven't created any new files or transferred anything onto your OS since then, you should be able to salvage most of it.

I'm not sure as well if MP3s are covered by System Restore (I think they are).

I'm doing entirely nothing on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday during the days. Tuesday night I'm seeing Ardal O'Hanlon who is playing our town. Thursday is golf. Friday and Saturday next week is Goodwood.

May well go and see Senna at some point.

But here's the Catch 22 of the situation: can you you browse to, and download a recovery tool, without saving to the drive and potentially corrupting what you want to recover with the cahe of the browser or the file download? :)

I love the trend for really simple sites that tell you one fact. Great if you just need to know whether it is Thursday or not etc. The next time someone asks you how many people are in space just now you won't have to worry about whether the 3 that the ISS left last week have been replaced or whether you missed the Chinese launching someone. All you need to do is ask how many people are in space right now?

Though this is definitely worse. Lasagne sandwich

Tesco are weird sandwich specialists, with this bizarre offering released last year. Diced beef, tomato sauce, layers of pasta, and a ricotta and mayonnaise dressing were dumped between two slices of white bread. Tesco’s sandwich developer reckoned this “could become the food of choice for anyone wanting a solid snack between meals”.

They did run some positive camber but shrinking the vertical makes the angle greater.

I still think it was doctored by an amateur, not just shrunk

I agree. I think they have mutilated the photo rather than just changed one axis

  • Bassano24/06/2011 at 20:21

I should have finished at 7 with a 20 min trip home. Somehow I've arrived home at 10 past 9. Booooo!!

Don't you remember what time you left?

Maybe you have narcolepsy and somnambulism

Yeah I left about half an hour ago. Too much work, too few hours in the day. Back in at 7am. It's like a recurring nightmare :P

  • Steven Roy24/06/2011 at 20:22

One thing is certain. Rudi Uhlenhaut never designed anything that looked like that photo

No 11 hour rule then, I guess

  • Alison24/06/2011 at 20:25

No 11 hour rule then, I guess

Yeah I guess there is. I guess I've never really thought about it before because you're scheduled to have more than that.

  • Bassano24/06/2011 at 20:25

Sometimes you just have to leave. Scheduling a mid or late before an early shift is bad planning

  • Alison24/06/2011 at 20:29

We only have 12 hours 7-7 to cover so early/mid/late are all fairly sociable in theory. It's just getting behind with stuff.... I'd rather stay and do it than get up at 4!!

Depends how long your rotation is but E,E,M,L,L Rest or something is the logical way to go

Well I've done 2 doubles in a row which is the full 12 so it doesn't really make much difference which way you do it.

Not too far though or they might fire you

I suppose. I was working on another site today as a favour though so I feel like I can't leave someone else with a load of stuff hanging over from the week still to do.

I get that, in principle. Though I do try to steer it into something that stimulates on occasion, whenever possible. Until I get to travel for a living and the calendar is my own

You're all a lot better than me. I'm soft. I'm really trying to save up atm so as well as feeling guilty about leaving the work unfinished, I can't help but think about the money.

If they're paying you by the hour on-site, then it's slightly better than just rostered hours. Either way, you're home now. So chill

Yeah I get paid overtime by the hour :) It's all pennies in the pocket.

probably but we have a less than 1mb connection which both BT and Orange refuse to make any faster. :/ so any type of video streaming online doesn't happen anymore. back to the use of sky + for us then!

  • Bassano24/06/2011 at 21:19

Tonight, tomorrow after Qualy. Whenever's convenient

Was thinking of getting more eyes on it over the racing weekend. Your call

I'm at the point I want to explode and tell everyone what I'm up to, but until all the ducks are in a row, I don't want to spoil it.
