Hello Thursday, you've come around quickly! Let's see what's happening..

Space

Tonight we will hopefully see a shuttle launch, as Discovery will be lifting off at 9.50pm GMT to fly to the International Space Station. Sadly this is Discovery's final flight, at the completion of this mission it is scheduled to be retired. You don't want to miss the final launch, especially as there are a limited number of flights for the rest of the shuttle fleet. NASA info page here, and Spaceflight Now has a live blog and an embedded stream - the stream is also available directly here.

(I'm amused to see blurb next to the SFN embed, Miles O'Brien will be giving a talk - I don't think it is the transporter chief of the starship Enterprise but I might be wrong!).

The other launch due today was the Glory mission on a Taurus rocket, but that has been deferred a few times and will now launch on Friday at 10.09am. There is a technical issue with this flight so it may yet be deferred again. NASA page.

Thanks to Steven for the heads-up on both.

Racing

Check out the F1 Big Picture. I can't say I'm a fan of the weird effect on the photo which manages to completely neuter the effect of the shiny shiny silvery livery, but I am a big fan of long-running partnerships. Mobil 1 have been with McLaren for 17 years! I'm sure I read somewhere recently that Hugo Boss have been around at least as long. Good on them all for not chopping and changing every year.

I was disappointed to learn Tony Kanaan's IndyCar deal has fallen through, he's a great guy, such a character he needs to be in the series. I hope something gets worked out for him.

Allen Wedge tweeted this great piece about the teamwork between Scott Dixon and Dario Franchitti. It doesn't matter if you don't like IndyCar because I'm sure the lessons hold for F1 too. Okay so it is hosted on a sponsor site, but it is a nice non-fluffy piece about drivers working together having a positive effect on all the other people in the team, great bits of banter too. Kind of puts you in mind of Vettel/Webber and how the garages must've been divided at the time, even if only mentally.

Drayson Racing has quit ALMS/LMS sportscar racing to join the all-new all-electric EVCUP. This is a bold move but it lends real support to the fledgling series to have a name like that involved. Drayson Racing always said they are a green team, their previous use of 2nd-gen biofuels is an example, now they've really gone for it. I was and remain sceptical of this series - to convince me the cars need to be fast and the teams/drivers need to be 'known names'. Drayson is the first step.

Christine and Mr C were in fits of laughter this morning listening to the latest offering from Another F1 Podcast, which features a part about Sidepodcast. I checked it out this evening, the rest of it is pretty funny too! There is a MAJOR swear-alert though as it is NSFW. In the words of Mr C:

"this is too funny for words, we're in tears of laughter this morning. you must listen to this podcast. comes with a strong language warning, but essential listening, promise :)

What's Racing This Weekend?

The three NASCAR series (Cup/Nationwide/Truck) visit Phoenix International Raceway in Arizona. This is a 1-mile oval with a unique dogleg on the backstraight which makes things a little less repetitive (some of these ovals all look the same). The dogleg is being redeveloped in time for NASCAR's second annual visit later this year, so do catch one of these three races to see the classic layout for the final time.

Meanwhile in Australia, Phillip Island hosts the first round of the World Superbikes. I can't say this is a series I follow all too closely but it is good to have another championship getting their 2011 season up and running.

Don't forget: the next round of Red Bull Crashed Ice happens this Saturday, live from Moscow. I'm sure we'll be following along here with a dedicated live thread. Extreme downhill ice skating! Like snowboard cross from the Winter Olympics but with ice skates instead of snowboards. Completely mad. What's not to like? Btw, did you know the Winter Olympics were last February? How has it been a year already??

Next weekend: WRC Mexico, NASCAR Las Vegas and GrandAm Homestead-Miami.

Just as a quick plug, I run a predictions game involving several racing series, at the moment there are only NASCAR Cup races involved but F1, MotoGP, ALMS and others will kick off soon. It isn't too late to join!

Music Choice

The Rifle Volunteer - End Season

This band is relatively unknown. One of the guys in the band is a friend of my sister and her boyfriend, they all used to hang out in Southampton and then London. I really like their sound, really good wintery stuff, reflective.

I do recommend checking out their Bandcamp, Facebook and Myspace pages. There are different freely streamable songs at each, and on the Bandcamp site you can buy an MP3 for as little as £1. Bargain. Just click the covers and remember the 'more releases' link.

I hope you like them. I don't get a penny for this I just think they are really good.

I am sure there is plenty I have missed, but I think that'll be all for me for now. If you spot something interesting do bring it up in the comments! Have a good day!

Aye - about time. It's a difficult sport to promote when it's on a channel that no one has. It'd be a gamble for RTE, because the Beeb is free to air in Ireland

  • RubberGoat24/02/2011 at 09:04

    Did you see about RTE?

Seems like a problem a lot of countries have. Seen that happen in NZ and Denmark.

Anyone in the mood for some early morning reading?

Hopefully it would be better figures than Beeb vs Setanta though, unless the coverage is really bad

RTE's coverage of F1 used to be quite good when they last showed it.

I remember when Sky first got it in 06, they only had a 3 year contract. I can only assume TVNZ don't want it back. Hopefully one day :)

Is it still shown on Sky?

I remember TVNZ's coverage being quite good, but they would only show the race. Sky showed qualy and the race but had no studio coverage.

  • Amy24/02/2011 at 09:11

Is it still shown on Sky?

yeah it is sadly, so none on TV for me if I'm ever at home during a race weekend.

I used to love the stuff they did with Bob.

Yeah it was really good. Geoff Bryan was a good host as well. I know a guy who worked with him and said he was a nice guy too.

It was too sweary but very funny. However I am not surprised that a few people here found it too much, considering that we refrain from such potty mouthed banter over here.

Having said that, some words that they used should be off limits. I swear a lot but even I don't use some of the language they did!

  • Kai in Prague24/02/2011 at 09:25

Me too :) It just wasn't my sense of humor. And I couldn't listen to the guy with the cold. I was afraid I'd catch it by power of suggestion. :)

I'm not saying I could listen to it every week but I thought it was a good satirical rant at all the things F1 does badly. I do like a good rant. :)

The first few minutes weren't that good but it got better, the sidepodstuff especially..

Yeah, it works out to about $126 US per night for so many amenities, including full kitchen with dishwasher and a clothes washing machine.

It's just a weird design with no shower door or anything, and when it's in the holster thingy it's hard to wash my hair under it. It's a challenge to not get water all over the bathroom (like I did yesterday, shhhhh).

I did that in my hostel in Berlin, and spent a long time cleaning it up. Later that day I went into the bathroom and there was water everywhere again, clearly one of my room mates was not as considerate as me :)

Haha.. glad some of you guys have now discovered AF1Podcast , I have been listening to them since about the middle of last season. I agree sometimes they do overstep the mark a tad, but thats to be expected. One of my favourite bits from them is when Lewham started tweeting and they ripped it out of him (very funny) .. i listen to spod for actual news and levelled opinion then listen to them for all the pi$$ taking and laughs...

    A little :(

Yeah. It may be a glitch in the matrix. Make sure you know where the closest pay phone is.

    Yep :)

  • Amy24/02/2011 at 11:06

    Hi guys :D

ooh hello, I hope you are enjoying your last days of freedom :)

  • Amy24/02/2011 at 11:06

Suddenly I want to go to Venezuela. Or not.

  • Kai in Prague24/02/2011 at 11:06

I wish they'd actually light the car. Are they at the Autosport show or is the same lighting people?

  • Lukeh24/02/2011 at 11:07

I am happy Rubens is driving the best looking car on the grid in 2011 :)

  • Pamela24/02/2011 at 11:07

ooh hello, I hope you are enjoying your last days of freedom :)

Ugh, back to work (and reality) on Monday.

  • Kai in Prague24/02/2011 at 11:07

I wish they'd actually light the car. Are they at the Autosport show or is the same lighting people?

I guess they don't want everyone to see it all, for all the secret stuff.

  • Amy24/02/2011 at 11:08

Ugh, back to work (and reality) on Monday.

    car all fixed?

  • Pamela24/02/2011 at 11:08

hooray! Now it will tell you far more interesting things :D

Not. Trust me on this one!

  • Lukeh24/02/2011 at 11:12

I agree Sam, Rubens is the bestest thing ever.

  • Pat W24/02/2011 at 11:13

    It's blue and white! Surprise.

    Is it retro?

  • Amy24/02/2011 at 11:13

Not. Trust me on this one!

I thought I'd give their sponsorship a chance to work its magic on me. Didn't happen.

  • Lukeh24/02/2011 at 11:14

    Is it retro?

Rothmans livery. Looks a lot different in my opinion, I find it odd so many people say it looks exactly the same

  • Christine24/02/2011 at 11:14

Sam Michael talks at a good speed for note-taking.

  • RubberGoat24/02/2011 at 11:14

    It's blue and white! Surprise.

With two retro rothmans stripes. Disappointing.

  • Kai in Prague24/02/2011 at 11:14

    oh dear. Technical difficulties.

  • Pat W24/02/2011 at 11:16

Rothmans livery. Looks a lot different in my opinion, I find it odd so many people say it looks exactly the same

About as Rothmans as Renault is JPS then? :) :)

  • Nick24/02/2011 at 11:19

Rothmans livery. Looks a lot different in my opinion, I find it odd so many people say it looks exactly the same

It merges the blue they had last year with more white, and the deep red of the PVDSA(?) with grey line

Its not too bad, but i think i expected too much

  • Lukeh24/02/2011 at 11:20

Well I am sitting firm in the 'it looks awesome' corner. ;)

  • Nick24/02/2011 at 11:20

    oh dear. Technical difficulties.

Your missing the chef part. So far the chef has gotten more attention from them than the livery. Not sure what that says...

  • RubberGoat24/02/2011 at 11:21

Well I am sitting firm in the 'it looks awesome' corner. ;)

It does look good, but it's oversold as a retro livery. I need to see a better pic but from the feed it just looks like last year's car (which I happen to like the livery of anyway).

  • Alex Andronov24/02/2011 at 11:21

Sam Michael: "I don't understand you people... I told you it was going to be a retro design. And now you're complaining that it looks exactly like last years car... Do you not know what retro means? It means 'looks like something from before', last year is before!"

  • Kai in Prague24/02/2011 at 11:21

Your missing the chef part. So far the chef has gotten more attention from them than the livery. Not sure what that says...

no, I mean on their end. :)

I am listening to the chef. They must be psyched about their food this year.

  • Nick24/02/2011 at 11:22

It does look good, but it's oversold as a retro livery. I need to see a better pic but from the feed it just looks like last year's car (which I happen to like the livery of anyway).

It has a lot more white, it also has the stripes up the back of the sidepod.

It is nice, If they hadnt built it up as retro i think i would be much more impressed

  • Lukeh24/02/2011 at 11:22

I am listening to the chef. They must be psyched about their food this year.

They have put extensive testing into their catering trays over the winter

  • Pat W24/02/2011 at 11:23

To be fair they didn't build it up as retro, Sam Michael just hinted at it to a few fans.

  • Leigh O'Gorman24/02/2011 at 11:24

    Important question:

    Does it have any sponsors?

  • RubberGoat24/02/2011 at 11:24

I am listening to the chef. They must be psyched about their food this year.

They have put extensive testing into their catering trays over the winter

I wonder if they will be cooking arepas for Pastor this year?

  • Nick24/02/2011 at 11:24

For a style to be retro it needs to be outdated though....

    although saying that...

  • Kai in Prague24/02/2011 at 11:24

They have put extensive testing into their catering trays over the winter

    Very aerodynamic.

  • Nick24/02/2011 at 11:24

  • RubberGoat24/02/2011 at 11:25

And by doing that we all hyped ourselves up that it would be retro..

  • Lukeh24/02/2011 at 11:26

    Their twitter too...

I still think there's a big difference between the way Williams hinted at it and Renault proper hyping it up. That is building up a retro livery to me.

  • RubberGoat24/02/2011 at 11:26

    Does it have any sponsors?

PDVSA (which I am told is pronounced Peh Deh Vay Sah)

  • RubberGoat24/02/2011 at 11:27

Retro usually means "something before the current one", not "something that looks like the current one or before". Does Williams need a better dictionary?

  • Nick24/02/2011 at 11:28

    Does it have any sponsors?

PDVSA (which I am told is pronounced Peh Deh Vay Sah)

I think the other side of the rear wing has Venezuela written on it.

Williams' method would have been great if they'd checked what "retro" meant before they started...

  • RubberGoat24/02/2011 at 11:30

Oh I didn't know that. I've been pronouncing it Peh Dro VaRo Sah? ;)

    Only people passionately against it...

yes. Is there a reason for that?

  • Alex Andronov24/02/2011 at 11:30

Indeed. It's very handy to know the actual answer about that.

  • Alex Andronov24/02/2011 at 11:33

I have... But he was the CEO of Flybrid (or whatever they were called) though :)

  • Christine24/02/2011 at 11:33

yes. Is there a reason for that?

Normally, I would say so that people can only take rubbish pictures and have to use the officially sanctioned ones for a decent view. But the ones on the Williams media page are all dark like that, so I have no clue!

  • Alianora La Canta24/02/2011 at 11:34

  • Lukeh24/02/2011 at 11:48

I can't watch that right now. What's it about?

There's no video, just says about when The One Show randomly went off last night because someone was putting their tea in the microwave and fire alarms kept going off

  • Alianora La Canta24/02/2011 at 11:48

I can't watch that right now. What's it about?

The One Show evacuated live on air due to a fire alarm. It turned out that the alarm was due to someone warming their tea up, causing the microwave to set the alarm off...

Nothing... That's what the article says that you are linking to. It says that it is a false internet rumour. And that microwaved water in actual tests makes no difference to plants...

  • Alianora La Canta24/02/2011 at 12:13

Are Grumman going to sue over that name like Ford did over F150?

I don't think Ford has a 111, so Hispania should be safe. Of course, they'll need to find another numbering scheme before 2050...

  • Alianora La Canta24/02/2011 at 12:13

...and get what? HRT only actually own an old football and three broken plates

They get publicity out of it, which is probably worth more to Ford than the entire team!

  • Nick24/02/2011 at 12:13

Are Grumman going to sue over that name like Ford did over F150?

Its not really the same industry!

  • RubberGoat24/02/2011 at 12:14

Its not really the same industry!

Still though, F-111 is the name of a well-known intercept bomber.

Unlike the Hispania, which will go down like a bomb this season!

  • Alianora La Canta24/02/2011 at 12:15

Its not really the same industry!

    Didn't stop Ford...

  • Nick24/02/2011 at 12:18

    Didn't stop Ford...

Ford was i the same industry though in that they were both vehicles.

I have a feeling that Ferrari knew what they were up to by using the same typeface.

It doesnt help that Ferrari's parent company is now effectively merging with fords big rival Chrysler...

How was your holiday Gavin, where were you?

It was great! I was in Trinidad and Tobago to visit my colleague and friend who went back for his paternity leave.

It's a fantastic country that's totally different to Europe and we had a great time trying new foods, tropical fruits, seeing all the sights, going to the beach, liming and wining at an all inclusive Soca Party and getting the full Caribbean experience.

I wholly reccomend you add it to the list of places to see!

If you’ve ever restarted your Mac, you know what’s involved. First you save your work, then close all your apps, then spend valuable time setting everything up again. With Resume, that time-consuming process is a thing of the past. Resume lets you restart your Mac — after a software update, for example — and return to what you were doing. With all your apps back in the exact places you left them.

The screen for photo editing (both size and resolution), hard drive space, and i felt like it would be able to cope better with any heavy editing. Which tbh it's not let me down once. It's exactly what i need. Perfect.

  • Alex Andronov24/02/2011 at 15:15

    Macs are very expensive...

The key thing, I think, is that Macs aren't any more expensive than PCs however... Apple doesn't do any low end machines.

Remember these are the Pro line of computers, these are business machines.

  • lou24/02/2011 at 15:17

ahh yes. i have x1 external screen, x1 external drive etc. not exactly portable though.

I would settle for that, however the amount of travelling i seem to do back and forth from uni it's not always as practical. Sitting on the train yesterday editing images and listening to music on my laptop was amazing. The three hour journey that would usually be spent reading or listening to music while i wait to edit things at home has now become 3hours of work time! It's awesome! :)

  • Alex Andronov24/02/2011 at 15:19

Remember these are the Pro line of computers, these are business machines.

Dell, for example, has a range of Laptops known as the Precision Mobile Workstation range. It starts at, what they bill as, "as low as £1,049".

Was very excited by this Mac news until I realised that it will be another two years, thanks to our arcane tax laws, before I can en-fiddle one onto the company's account. If I sell the Macbook before then I'll have to pay tax on it, or somefink.

too expensive for me at the moment. the 256gb drive is too small (fcp and logic alone come with that many assets) and the 512gb is £1,000.

By the look of the pictures, someone at Williams forgot to put 50p in the electricity meter. Livery looks okay to me; will be nice to see it running around a track. *grabs diary*

ouch. you could sell it to your other half for 1p, or is that now allowed?

Well, when it’s at home she is the principal user of it (not sure the taxman would approve of this) for looking up tat on the internet.

the 256gb drive is too small (fcp and logic alone come with that many assets) and the 512gb is £1,000.

There is that. Much as a shiny new fast thing appeals, for me at least a 26-month-old MacBook is fast enough. I don’t edit videos and I do most photo processing on the iMac.

I think I may get sore hands. NASA has the astronauts in the van going to the launch pad when they are quite obviously in the shuttle

    #sidepodspace

2 hours till the first launch attempt for the space shuttle Discovery. So far it all looks good with a 90% chance of good weather which is higher than I have ever seen before for the Kennedy Space Centre.

All 6 astronauts are loaded up and the pad crew are working through their check lists to close out the vehicle and then the breakdown of the white room.

Gonna write a quick post for it, as we should do that for live things anyway, plus we'll need somewhere for FBFB replay.

    v.interesting point from joe:

If one shows a judge a headline that says “the real Lotus is back” and you tell him that this is from a reputable journal, he might believe it, even if everyone in the industry knows that the real Lotus is not back at all and the people who wrote such things are schmucks. It is all fairly basic misinformation and disinformation, but will the judge see through it?

would love to know if an autosport magazine cover ends up being used in court. would that make haymarket complicit? more: http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2011/02/24/what-is-really-the-news-for-f1/

  • Maverick24/02/2011 at 23:32

could be embarrassing for them - it's not hard to show the change in editorial attitude coincided with the announcement of the livery launch at AI!

agreed. but they're hands are tied, any judge will see that. autosport by rights should be seen to be totally unbiased.

the thing with that cover was that it just stuck out compared to everything else they've done/written. maybe they got sucked in, maybe they didn't mean anything by it, but if joe's right it could spell significant trouble.

i would say the song was good, but the producer wasn't. no idea who did what or where, but something just didn't sit right somewhere. how much of their stuff have you bought?

7 songs plus 2 remixes. They are releasing the album one song per month, annoyingly time-limited and I missed one. The one I linked isn't on the album, it was done a year earlier.

Heh, will have a think then. :)

I think the album stuff sounds a little less raw but I can't say I have an ear for it.
