Ooh, it's my turn on daily duties again. I'm writing this on our Windows Machine - the one that allows us to use Skype without Mr C tearing his hair out. I know, I know, he's never really been complementary about Windows in the past but it has it's benefits. It allowed us to record the recent Sidepodchat, which is certainly worth listening to if you have a spare fifteen minutes. Also, the Windows machine means I get to play The Sims 2. Which I am not doing. Nu-uh.

Now, what goodies can I bring to you today? First off, of course, we have this week's ranking posts. You can check out how well the drivers have done here, where Nick Heidfeld makes his debut. There's also the team post, in which every single entrant now has some kind of points on the board - albeit positive, negative, whatever.

Also spotted yesterday, Renault released an update on Robert Kubica, via the medium of a brief interview with one of his doctors.

...he no longer needs intensive care so he has begun the rehabilitation process. He is now in his own large room so that he is as comfortable as possible. He has already started some gentle hand exercises with the slight flexing of his fingers.

Dr. Rossello

It does sound like progress may be slow, but any kind of progress is brilliant, and I really appreciate the updates that Renault have been giving us.

Yesterday, Alex pointed out some exciting things from Amazon - although in the US only at the moment. Members of Amazon Prime will have access to streaming TV shows and movies for free. Loads and loads of them! I wonder if the subscription business model would work better for TV than it does for music. It's certainly not dead in the music industry but it doesn't seem to have taken off as much as it was hyped to. I know I don't like it but that's probably just bad experience. Meanwhile, Spotify have just got a load of investment to keep on trying to break America. It may happen one day.

Whilst we're on the subject of media, whilst I was browsing the iTunes podcast store recently, I spotted that ChannelFlip have found a new celeb to link up with and have launched Richard Hammond's Tech Head. I don't know what it is like, but I do know that Hammond is relatively popular amongst us as one of the Top Gear presenters. Is Top Gear still cool? Who knows?

What other non-F1 podcasts do you listen to? Do you make a point of subscribing to them, or do you just catch up when you can? I'm always intrigued by people's consumption habits, so why not share yours?

Now, back to the matter at hand, which is sports and stuff. Make sure you keep an eye on the Sidepodcast Calendar. We're doing our best to keep it updated with the changing F1 circumstances, and it's also worth noting that there are some fun things coming up this weekend. There's more NASCAR, but if that's not your bag, you should definitely tune in to Crashed Ice. It's the third of four rounds, and so far it has been super duper exciting every time we have watched. We may be testing out the Factbyte Factbox in the coming days as well, so make sure you stick around. We're widening our horizons, and we're taking you with us!

That's plenty enough waffling from me for now. Best wishes go to everyone affected by the Christchurch earthquakes. I know several of our commentors have family in the country, so our thoughts go out to all.

I will see you in the comments.

There are non-motorsport podcasts?? What on earth do they talk about?

    :)

I think the only one is Startledbunny, when I can find time to listen properly to note down the tracks for future Spotifying or buying.

Well the ones I usually make priority to listen first are 7 Day Sunday, Fighting Talk, Football Weekly, Boots N All, Wrong Bed (thats darts people), The Bugle and Football Ramble. Rest I fit in if I have time.

Thursday's shuttle launch is still on schedule despite a minor problem having cropped up. Fortunately it was minor and will not delay the launch

    http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/shuttle/main/index.html

There is another mission launching at 10am UK time tomorrow. This is the Glory mission which will study aerosols in the Earth's atmosphere. The launch window for this mission is only 48 seconds so unlike previous unmanned missions there will be no chance of sitting watching nothing for hours.

I assume they are trying to fit it into a particular orbit so they are limited in the slot available. Not sure why that should be the case unless it is going into a similar orbit to lots of other satellites.

Alright then, I'll start with F1.

Sidepodcast of course, Chequered Flag F1, F1 Rejects, and The Flying Lap

IDK how to categorise the rest, but I get Chris Moyles Enhanced, Hamish and Andy, Russell Brand, CBC Comedy Factory and Laugh Out Loud, CBC Radio 3 Music, The Moth, TED Talks, Stuff You Should Know, This American Life, and The Vinyl Cafe.

It's about 12 hours a week of material, excluding video podcasts.

ooh, finally an answer to what they're building down at Albert Park, a new garage for the V8s

  • F1Wolf23/02/2011 at 07:22

No wonder Bernie is keen to reschedule the race for later in the season. http://url.ie/9bqi #F1

may not be that black and white issue. In the Concorde Agreement there is a number of races per season the teams have to commit to and it probably is not 20 races. I remember the number mentioned few years ago was 16-17 races per season. Every race on top of that means extra payment to teams (likely from FOM). So Bernie may be loosing out on Bahrain payment but at the same time he will probably also save some $$$ on payments to teams. I would be surprised he if there were no clauses protecting his interests and his pocket in case of race cancellations...

  • Mr C23/02/2011 at 07:49

Yes... Well I like listening to podcasts and... I most of the time I want to listen to podcasts is exactly when I'm not in front of a computer. I can do lots of things while listening to podcasts but I can't read at the same time. So I like to have the podcasts come another way.

fair enough. and to answer christine's question, "Do you make a point of subscribing to them, or do you just catch up when you can?"

For the video ones, I catch up when I can remember to, and for the audio ones, they are queued up to listen to in the car, which I'm in every day. I don't subscribe to anything I don't enjoy.

Radio is not an option, except 6 Music and BBC 7, but hardly any cars have DAB receivers.

  • RubberGoat23/02/2011 at 08:28

I listen to mostly motorsport or football podcasts - other than that it's Fighting Talk, Friday Night Comedy, The 404, TWiT and Freakonomics.

I listened to the debrief while on the flight home from Trinidad yesterday too ;)

  • Alex Andronov23/02/2011 at 08:29

that's exactly how media consumption should work. i just don't spend enough time in a car to listen to much more than f1 minute :(

    To to answer Christine's question:

Adam and Joe, Adam Buxton's Big Mix Tape, Back to work, The Big web show, Build and analyse, Desert Island Discs, Hypercritical, The Infinite Monkey Cage, Friday Night Comedy (only the News Quiz half), MacBreak Weekly, The Pipeline, Put this on and The talk show.

I also subscribe to Collings and Herrin, As it Occurs to Me and You Look Nice today which may not be suitable for all readers / listeners.

I subscribe to everything. I download more than the above but those are the ones I listen to (and have listend to all of every episode of and are still going). Because of these other onese that I have downloaded but haven't yet listened to I have 1,281 unlistened to podcasts.

I have to say podcasts from the http://5by5.tv/ network of Dan Benjamin are my now go to place for well produced high signal to noise podcasts.

Most of them are less news focused and more generally fascianting. For example Hypercritical is a show all about the little things that are wrong and what we can look to see in the future. Episode one was about tv connected devices like the apple tv etc and why nobody has found the solution yet. In a recent episode they talked for about 20 minutes about the stupid design of USB Connectors because of how you can't tell externally which way is up.

It's hard to imagine that everyone would be interested in such a show, of course, but that's what I mean about the network. The shows are great and when you find one you like you will cling on I think. Dan's co-hosts of some of the shows above are Jeffery Zeldman, Merlin Mann, John Gruber, John Siracusa (of Ars Technica) and Marco Arment (of instapaper).

  • Mr C23/02/2011 at 08:41

heat is not good, I am not a fan of running on treadmills (as much as I like not having to go outside), but the hotel gym in Malaysia will definitely be the lesser of two evils.

    Morning all.

NASA TV ( www.nasa.gov/ntv )is currently showing the build up to the launch of the Glory mission. Launch is due in just over half an hour at 9 minutes past whatever hour you are on. Weather and everything else looks good so far.

    Hi Leigh.

Shame about Kanaan. I thought his drive had been sorted but apparently not

  • Steven Roy23/02/2011 at 09:36

NASA just reported a zero% chance of weather issues and if they have to reset and go tomorrow there is still zero% chance of weather problems. I guess that shows the difference between launching in California against Florida

  • Leigh O'Gorman23/02/2011 at 09:36

Shame about Kanaan. I thought his drive had been sorted but apparently not

aye - the original deadline was apparently feb 1st, but de ferran gave him an extra 2 weeks. sadly nothing came about.

he's a very good driver who does not deserve to be on the sidelines

  • Steven Roy23/02/2011 at 09:38

I think the one difference is that it is rare for anyone to give a large sum of money to someone who is clueless to let them run a business where in racing all sorts of obviously clueless drivers seem to be able to get sponsorship despite it being obvious to anyone that the driver is not good enough to succeed.

it's sad though that while the indycar series is clearly in much better shape than it was a year ago, the series champions from 2004 and 2005 are without drives

    :/

That is so annoying. I have tried raising money to get a business going in the past and found it impossible regardless how much money or how good the business looked

    T-10

Most boring build up to a launch ever. Everything is perfect. The weather even if they have an issue and have to go tomorrow the weather will still be 100%.

The rocket looks like an oversized firework. Doesn't look big at all

    T-10 minutes

Went smoothly until it all crunched to a halt. Looks like a 24 delay so launch some time tomorrow morning.

Sounds like the problem is not on the rocket but in something that communicates with it and gives it commands to ignite etc.

I should also add that I have a really short attention span and other podcats don't really pull me in enough to keep me interested. Either that says a lot about how much I enjoy your podcats or that I really am quite awful with listening to stuff for a long amount of time

It's interesting, because you're okay watching tv and films, so maybe audio only just doesn't capture your interest. Everyone is different in that sense. I embrace the x2 speed so that they don't take quite so long :)

Yeah I can sit for longer than most podcasts watching a film or something but I seem to get really easily distracted with audio stuff. It annouys me a bit because I want to embrace podcasts a lot more but it's a bit of a struggle sometimes when I find it so easily to be distracted as wierd as that probably sounds.

Oh it was awesome! We went to see a friend of mine who's from there - we saw so many cool things, tried so many foods, fruits, drinks and had so many great experiences. It's a really nice place and the people are so different in their out look and so friendly - we always felt safe and comfortable too!

We also went to a massive Carnival party, went snorkelling, body boarding and jet skiing, drove around both islands and the people we stayed with threw us a party for our anniversary :)

  • RubberGoat23/02/2011 at 11:24

Should mention that they eat totally differently over there - sort of a cross between Indian and Caribbean. It's got so much spice and flavour to it that I'm having trouble adjusting back to European food. Also the fruits they have are different too - they taste much better! I tried Sugar Cane and ate the pulp off fresh cocoa beans too!

So many podcasts, so little time :)

Mactalk, WRC, TWiT, Macbreak, The Talk Show (the first couple of episodes of this were terrible but perseverance paid off - they are slightly better now).

I worry that one day I'll meet someone from one of the podcasts I listen to at 2x and tell them they sound funny at normal speed :P

so you have to get up and fill it too?

I have put all the ingredients in a container in the fridge so it will only take about 2 seconds to dump it all in and flick the switch. I don't think most people would bother but mornings, ugh.

  • Christine23/02/2011 at 12:07

Someone bought us a slow cooker. I used it once and what came out the other end was not good at all, so I threw it out!

I think they must be trendy at the moment because there was a whole bunch of slow cooker meal packety things in the supermarket and I'm sure they never used to be. I am hoping the delicious food that came out of mums was not a fluke and mine will be delicious too.

I don't really like sausages though so the first experiment might not be the best.

  • Amy23/02/2011 at 12:12

I don't think the Aussies would be happy with that ;)

  • Amy23/02/2011 at 12:15

Same shape, but not really identical, not on the inside.

but the texture is the same, like when you eat a chicken breast it feels different to when you eat a steak. But once things are all minced up into sausage meat they're always sausage meaty.

I don't hate them, I just only eat them about twice a year because I prefer everything else above them :D

Yeah I heard that too but in general they don't, because they get too drunk after getting bored from the speeches!

The last one I went to, they played trivia games and I had to overturn a question that they got the wrong answer to on Tom K. They never had the traditional wedding waltz at midnight either because the bride got so drunk she passed out!

It sounds like it. Good on them though I suppose. At our wedding we tried to do some Danish stuff as like you say, there aren't many Kiwi traditions that we knew of...

  • Pat W23/02/2011 at 13:09

    Hello. Welcome back Gavin.

Oh it was awesome! We went to see a friend of mine who's from there - we saw so many cool things, tried so many foods, fruits, drinks and had so many great experiences. It's a really nice place and the people are so different in their out look and so friendly - we always felt safe and comfortable too!

    That sounds awesome.

  • Kate23/02/2011 at 13:09

Some people don't seem to understand that just because you can see a pattern in the numbers doesn't mean the pattern has substance to it. They may as well watch the flames of a fire an extrapolate from the patterns they see there

Yep. Especially as, if I understand the "article" correctly, that pattern is based on the fastest time for each driver only. Which leaves no allowance for the programme each driver is on or the track conditions that day.

  • RubberGoat23/02/2011 at 13:20

How's the novel going btw Alex?

  • Alex Andronov23/02/2011 at 17:54

How's the novel going btw Alex?

    Good question... It's going...

I'm working on another draft at the moment. I'm probably about a third of the way through. It's fair to say that I did hardly anything on it during 2010. And now I have a bit of a deadline to get some serious work done before that's proving to be a bit of inspiration.

However... I do keep getting distracted :)

I've just got to the editing stage of a four part story for gamboling. And on the back of the fun feedback I've written a directors commentary or something I'm not sure if that's the right term to go on the end which will hopefully encourage people to give feedback like they kindly did for the Airbourne story.

I think people find it difficult to comment on a story, but maybe it's easier to comment on the process? That's my hope. So I'm hoping to put that out as 4 parts over four days Monday - Thursday and then on Friday the Directors Commentary post.

Basically I'm getting my writing and editing eye nice and sharpened up for the novel :)

  • Bassano23/02/2011 at 18:01

  • Alex Andronov23/02/2011 at 18:33

now that could/would restore my fair in apple as a creative enterprise. very important to me, that.

Yes... Well I heard something by the way that I hadn't realised... The guy who was project lead at Adobe on Premier was the guy who was project lead on Final Cut at Macromedia. Macromedia never released Final Cut because they were bought by Adobe and for anti competitive reasons they had to give up Final Cut.

So the same guy was responsible for the start of both of those products. One time he came back from a holiday and all he wanted to do was stick his home movies on something that would be simple and not over complicated. He did a renegade project which ended up being the reboot of iMovie. And then he was put in charge of iMovie for iPhone. He was the guy up on stage. So the guy who invented Premier and Final Cut has been doing consumery stuff for ages. I wonder if he might have got to the end of the inventing new stuff for consumers stuff and now they've put him back in charge of the proper stuff.

  • Alex Andronov23/02/2011 at 18:34

I don't know about this one...

@F1Lite: Hispania reportedly accepted $210,000 in exchange for giving Giorgi Mondi a 32 lap run in the HRT F110 last week. That's $6,500 a lap. #F1

I thought so too. What's the going rate for tests these days+

I thought a test day normally cost £500,000 if the team wasn't planning on using your services afterwards. Though to be fair if they're considering giving him a 2012 race seat, a large discount would be normal.

But to put this into perspective, it costs €5500 (£4666.75) to do Renault's "Feel It" programme, which includes 2 laps in an old F1 car. Hispania charged $6562.50 (£4052.34) per lap for Giorgio to do his 32-lap run in a nearly-new F1 car. This means that Hispania are charging less than twice the amount to run in their car and Renault are in theirs.

I believe Hispania are either undervaluing their product or aiming at entirely the wrong market...

Tomorrow we have not one but two launches. First we have the launch of the Glory mission to stdy aerosols in the atmosphere which should have launched this morning but ran into technical problems late in the countdown. It is due to launch at 9 minutes past ten UK time..

    http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/Glory/main/index.html

About 12 hours later we have the launch of the space shuttle Discovery at 9:50pm UK time. Today's mission managers meeting gave the go ahead for the launch and even the weather is playing ball with only a 20% chance of weather problems.

True. I had that great meeting last night with the great idea of working to connect US kids and Czech kids, and I still like that idea and will pursue it, but I guess what I think I'm realizing is that this isn't where I want to be. A 60% pay cut is rough, and I'm not at a stage in my life where I'm up for that. But it's a beautiful place, no doubt, but difficult working conditions for folks here.

Yeah, no great emergency or anything, just not feeling that great. I think it's the food or something, but I'm here cooking all my own due to the allergies, so why is this happening? It's not bad, I don't want to give the wrong impression, just a bit low today. Lots of stress.

Near as I can figure, they may have no reason to be pleasant. There's a heaviness here, and they make 40% of a western salary. Life is hard here. I feel for them. And I don't want to live here. Clarity is awesome.

    Night Janna

  • Kai in Prague23/02/2011 at 21:55

Kai, hope you have a better day tomorrow. I think it's great you're trying something new but have the good sense to know when it's not right for you.

Thanks Janna. I appreciate it. :)

You sure you are on the right flight? Alison is not going to be happy if you end up in Dusseldorf

But the beer will be great!

  • Lukeh23/02/2011 at 21:59

But the beer will be great!

You should definitely use that excuse to Alison when you accidentally land there.

She would be quite happy that Nick was enjoying his beer

So what is a nice gift for my Czech friend who's been sending emails to his Czech friends and set up these meetings for me?

  • Amy23/02/2011 at 22:02

Last night I dreamed that the final test was moved to Melbourne, but the track was different. Then I ran into Rubens in the underpass under the track and he was wearing a St Kilda Saints AFL dressing gown. Once I got to my stand I was sitting behind Puck from Glee and I was trying to comment and tell Mr C but I couldn't get the internet to connect.

I blame Mr C completely for this messed up turn of events.

A Czech chequered flag. Check the cheque doesn't bounce though if you pay in that way.

Good idea.... I wonder what that would be? I'll ask at the office tomorrow, they can tell me, maybe....if it's the nice lady who is working.

I watched some of An Idiot Abroad on You Tube tonight. It put this trip into perspective for me. Things could be worse. :)

this is too funny for words, we're in tears of laughter this morning. you must listen to this podcast: www.anotherf1podcast.com/2011/02/22/2011-02-preseason-podcast-previe/

comes with a strong language warning, but essential listening, promise :)

Just caught up with this (and the 2010 highlights), so funny :) :)

Very right about the language warning (and a lot of laughing) but it is fun. I kind of think they aren't a million miles from you guys, like a Sidepodcast Uncensored... they even have your "WHAT?!" :)
