We have a nice break this weekend, for many of us it is a four-day weekend for Easter with Good Friday tomorrow and a holiday on Monday too (with due apologies to those working in retail or in places around the world without time off). And with the extra holiday next Friday for the Royal Wedding we get two long weekends in a row - bonus!
Most forms of racing are taking a break too, meaning we can have a nice little rest to recover after the opening salvos in all the major series. How will you spend yours?
Lots to plug on the site at the moment, far more than can be included here. What you should do is go to the homepage and just start reading and listening! Lots of good stuff.
Whilst enjoying your favourite F1 podcast, if you are also a fan of IndyCar perhaps you might start thinking, "I wish there was a podcast a bit like this for IndyCar". I'd like to direct you to More Front Wing with Steph and Paul and some special guests in each show. I recommend show 36 with Shane comparing F1 to IndyCar, show 38 with James Hinchcliffe, and show 39 with Pippa Mann, who will be the first British woman to enter the Indy 500, and blogger extroadinaire Jeff Iannucci.
F1 news seems a bit thin at the moment, but that's not unusual at the start of a 3-week break after 3 races so close to each other. Natural downtime. There's a bit of rampant speculation about Murdoch buying F1 which I don't believe for one second so I've chosen to ignore it.
Do keep an eye on my blog tomorrow for some Friday Favourites, links to interesting racing articles I've found. I'd gladly include some of them here too but I haven't got around to making the list yet!
Races This Weekend
Most of the major series take a break, although we do have a test at Le Mans and a bit of tintop and F3 action.
- Le Mans Test Day. You can see a list of testers here with an update here (thanks to Gabriel and Alianora). This is our first look at Audi vs Peugeot in 2011 at La Sarthe itself. Audi will be bringing their brand new yet-to-be-raced (but heavily tested) R18 coupe, let's see how it stacks up against the new 908!
- World Touring Cars, Zolder, Belgium
- NASCAR Nationwide Series & Truck Series, Nashville, Tennessee, USA. The main Cup Series takes a week off, but the second-tier Nationwide race is 12.30am Saturday night / Sunday morning.
- British F3 & GT, Oulton Park, Cheshire, UK. Leigh will again be in attendance through the BF3 weekend, you can keep up with his reports at the F1 & Motorsports Archive.
The following weekend it picks up again when we have IndyCar, MotoGP, DTM, NASCAR, V8 Supercar and BTCC.
If you have a long Easter weekend take it easy, relax and do enjoy it! Mine's a pint.
hullo new daily.
*raises pint to pat*
I've got a little bottle of Tuborg, I may have found a new favourite lager.
i love this concept camera: http://kottke.org/11/04/concept-camera-with-detactable-lens
i would like that to be real please :)
ahh, you're linking to the LMS test day at Paul Ricard. You may be wanting this instead: http://www.planetlemans.com/2011/03/18/55-entries-for-the-le-mans-test-day/
Oh thanks, no wonder I was confused about the Peugeot/Audi thing! THey are there after all then. :D
I volunteered to work a shift in someone else's shop tomorrow as a favour. Really regretting it now...

Post updated and the test promoted to the top of the list, suddently it got more interesting. :) Thanks again.
Yes, have to take the public wraps off of new cars and pilots sometime--all rookie pilots must complete ten laps in order to compete. NASCAR's Michael Waltrip is one of them. Should be interesting.
I meant to mention earlier that Allan McNish is now on twitter
https://twitter.com/AllanMcNish
Yes I expect he'll have fun, it'll be fascinating to see how fast he is compared to the GT regulars
Fantastic
Heheh, to the BRDC runners of the London marathon:

Is there anyone who doesn't read the comments?
:) :)
The Le Mans test linked in the Daily is from 18th March. There's an update dated 12th April here, but it doesn't make sense unless you refer to the 18th March one as well.
:)
cheers
Must sleep, goodnight.
updated, btw
Night Pat
Goodnight!
i should do the same, night steven, night alia and night lurkers.
loved the drs/kers/kfc debate. more tomorrow i hope :)
Goodnight!
Night Mr C.
And to think that thread wouldn't get many comments
it's nice to have something to get our teeth into. must try and squeeze in a skype call next week.
Should be interesting given the start to the season

Good morning everyone :)
Nice post Pat :D
running ping :) http://amysrunning.posterous.com/week-5-day-2
Wow. Do you do jogging in the Albert Park?
its not quite close enough to my house to walk there, and I don't like going on the tram when I'm all sweaty so I don't at the moment. Once i can run a bit further without stopping I plan to though :)
Turtles, F1 circuits, I've really got to find something more exciting :)
For some reason i am super pumped up its the weekend in a few hours.
Absoloutly no plans at this stage, but it feels like its gonna be a good one! :D
If its any consolation my pool is even less exciting! swim from one tower to the other... repeat... repeat...
:D
The pool at the gym.. http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Dubai+-+United+Arab+Emirates&ll=25.100402,55.169832&spn=0.002691,0.004951&t=h&z=18
I was thinking today that I'd quite like to go swimming but I don't like public pools :( It's why I'd like to live in an apartment building that has one :)
my apartment building has one, but its always too crowded and a silly shape so i have to go to the gym to do hardcore training!
Australia has some great public pools though i remember
new kind of paywall:

interesting idea paying one fee with access to different portals (like paying for cable with access to different channels).
There is not too many people here today, no?
Morning guys!
Good morning Lukeh :)
how are you marti?
Fine, here writing some texts... And you?
not too bad thanks! Got a game I've been waiting months and months for so that should keep me happy before work tonight :)
morning folks,
i - am - sore
Hey :)
What are you playing?
I bought Turkish Apple tea today and now I can't stop drinking it. I don't think it's got any actual tea in it,it just tastes like hot yummy apple juice. Mmmmmm.
that is kind of my cup tea :-)
I want to go back and by the Turkish Cherry :D
I also bought NZ Breakfast, which is pretty much normal breakfast tea with dried Kiwifruit in it.
Portal 2!
Wooohoooo
Hello.
They drink that all the time in Turkey, in little glasses, even in the heat of the day. Must say it was very refreshing. I brought some back for Mum but not me. :(
Finally I've finished writing my three articles of the day! Now time to rest :)
I can see this being the start of an epic tea collection - the actual shop didn't have most of the yummy looking flavours on the website but the website has free shipping if you spend more than $60. $60 buys a lot of tea.
Awesome! I want it, too many games on the go though!
Hey Marti,
how are you today?
Surely its not even midday there!
Tea is awesome. Now warm weather is here I've taken to drinking lighter stuff like Earl Grey and... the other one, when I'm home (still need the caffeine kick of the usual at work).
That is a lot of tea
Yeah tell me about it. I traded in a few that I don't play so I only paid £5 which is pretty damn funky but yes, the first game absolutely blew me away so I;m so looking forward to this :)
today I spent $28.25 and I only bought two types, so maybe $60 will only buy four teas :D
I want to get some little tins to store them in too, not having them in airtight containers is bad for the tea they tell me.
Here, I am a little bit asleep hehe
depends on what kind of tea ... I tell sometimes I can't believe what I am seing when I look at prices of some teas on some of fine tea shops over here ... I am not a connoisseur so I have no idea if the tea is worth that much money
I have 4 to complete as well as portal2 before LA Noire comes out, its going to be tough!
Ohh I forgot about la noire! *adds another game to ever growing list*
Here in Spain? No, here it's 11:53 :) There's a gap of 1 hour between the UK hour time and the Spanish one.
in the actual shop they have samples of about 30 flavours, I like fruity drinks so everytime I walk past I see what fruit samples they have. I've liked all the ones I've tried so far. All the actual tea-like ones all taste the same to me.
I just made a EUR payment and the USD EUR rate of today kind of shocked me ... 1.47 ? what on Earth is happening ...
Aha, i am in Dubai, so a 2 hour gap the other way :)
17:56 :-) beer time will soon be upon us
Where are you from?
$28 is still a lot isn't it? :)
from different places but in Hong Kong for last 17 years
Darjeeling.
I should blog tea experimentation.
best tea ever
oh for sure, but it will make many cups which is better than buying a cup for $4 from the cafe :)
similar math resulted in new coffee machine in the office :-)
Strong Green Tea FTW!
Do you guys do the siesta in that part of Spain? My sister lives in Vigo and everything shuts down for 2 hours in the afternoon, but then reopens until really late.
nahhhhhhhhh
my work bought a nespresso machine but we're banned from bringing in our own capsules for it because they want to make their money back, booooo
We have half an office of programmers and mathmaticians yet no one has worked it out here yet...
Oh yes true
A quick question for more technical folk - do the regs state an F1 car must have 7 forward gears? Is there anything to stop a team building a gearbox with either 6 or 8 forward gears?
I'm not bothered about the practicalities pf doing it - just wondering if the amount of gears is cemented in the rules
I may have bought it after the last time we talked tea and you mentioned it
In my case, I don't do the siesta, but yes, it's a widespread practice hehehe.
we have nespresso too, capsule costs 1/5 of what coffee outside costs and machine requires almost zero maintenace. small piggy bank next to it for coffee rasing funds. everybody happy :-)
:D
similar question was on my mind when someone on TV or radio was talking about gear ratios and rev limits on that long Shanghai straight and suggested 8 gears ... never heard of 8th gear in F1 ...
Just caught the Formula Ford highlights (great that Ch 4 are showing it) and was amazed that one of the drivers - Geoff Uhrhane - not only looks exactly like Will Power, but sounds exactly like him as well. Scary...
I was thinking about that after watching FP3 as well
By the way Pat,
ace daily again
They are? Any chance they'll be on 4OD?
No idea if they're on 4OD, but it's broadcast one week after the races I believe
Ta :)
9.6.1: The maximum number of forward gear ratios is 7.
Excellent - thank you young sir

Are CVTs banned?
I guess they are or someone might have tried to be clever by now
yep
Yes, they are. Williams wanted to introduce it in the late 1990s but the FIA said "no" because it would make the gearshifts too quick (i.e. instantaneous on the grounds of not needing to happen). Gearshifts are banned from being quicker than 0.025 seconds for this reason.
I thought the seamless shift boxes jumped quicker than that?
You can have 6 gears if you like. Technically, you can have one gear if you like because the rule mandating a minimum of 4 got dropped a while ago.
Virgin and HRt are only running one gear, right?
(eyy-ohhhh)
;)
No. They were limited to 0.025 seconds because a number had to be given to differentiate between standard and CVT gearboxes. Intruigingly, it is now possible to have a CVT provided it only distributes KERS power and not the power of the main engine.
Interesting
Perhaps they were suggesting the car should be turned round and driven using reverse gear? ;)
i think klien must've been driving this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=argsqecVccI

Sad news indeed.

I've read he crashed at the Curva do Cafe, but he didn't hit the wall, he lost the control of his car and three cars ran into him :(
Interesting to see this morning that the PSP Go, Sony's downloadable media only handheld that doesn't have a hard media slot for games sold at retail, has ceased production after being so badly received and selling so badly. Seems the games industry is still pretty much embracing retail games...
Aye - that reads like the result of the accident as opposed to anything to do with circuit specifically. Very sad when it happens though.
So Real Madrid win the spanish cup, take a bus ride to celebrate, then drop the cup they just won from the top of the bus, then the bus runs over it.

What a disaster :(
There is something to be said for sitting in a sunny field reading Autosport over lunch, if only lunch was longer. :)
That's a lovely way to spend lunch :)
depends how you looks at it. the ipod touch outsold it and that has no media slot.
It's the first real dedicated handheld games console to do that though and it just sold really very very badly. Even sony admitted today it was a big flop
Obviously the market is there though as you say but what can you do when you have competition like the iPod or iphone who's games, albeit not as in depth as a full game you'd see for a PSP, are priced at a few pound compared to £30 releases for the psp?
Interesting debate somewhere in there though I reckons, may blog about it after work tonight
but the pressure is coming from android and ios, not retail boxed games, surely?
http://news.cnet.com/8301-13506_3-20054217-17.html
Yeah that's what I mean. It just intruiged me how badly it did when you have other digital distribution formats starting to flourish.
I didn't even know it existed. Bad marketing may be at least partially responsible for the PSP Go's failure. Also, the Playstation is something I understood to be aimed at the "cool kids" - the sort of people who needed the retail box and paraphenalia to show off to their friends. The iPod Touch is aimed at a slightly more mature audience which prefers the convenience of downloading.
It'll be from retail games - Android and iOs aren't games consoles but multi-use platforms, so they're in slightly different markets. I suspect they will converge in the next decade and the multi-use platform will win, but the battle's still being fought.
what are you basing that assumption on?
Looking at what the platforms are and what they're used for. There's still a large market in the handheld games console, particularly among pre-teens (who have been used to having kid's games consoles since the mid-1980s. The teen market has abandoned that and gone for the sort of mainstream multi-purpose platforms previously the reserve of adults (having had a smooth progression from mobile phones with feature creep).
Gradually, as the multi-purpose platforms get cheaper and more convenient, the age at which the transfer happens will reduce until the dedicated handheld games console platform is gone. However, the legacy of the technologies having used different paths to get there has meant that the multi-purpose platform has not instantly replaced handhelds, especially among the younger set.
Mmm, Doctor Who advert.

I love the last one :D
I dont really do any mobile gaming as i prefer my home console and i dont have to share a TV :)
But In my view of gaming I thing there is a big gap between what the PSP does vs the iphone/android.
Its like the Wii vs the 360/PS3.
The first shifts lots of hardware with simple and innovative games. But the big multi million dollar making AAA games only appear on the latter.
The DS sits somewhere in between, but i havent seen many games on the iphone of the size i would expect from a PSP game. Also the lack of buttons is an issiue.
the PS Phone thing could be an interesting hybrid
Not that you're counting :)
uh-huh, alia, i'll quote the article i just linked to (emphasis mine):
According to a new report from research firm Flurry Analytics, Nintendo's share of the portable gaming market in the U.S. slipped from 70 percent in 2009 to 57 percent in 2010. Sony's PlayStation Portable, meanwhile, saw its market share figures drop from 11 percent to 9 percent year over year. The big winners in 2010, according to Flurry, were iOS- and Android-based devices, which nabbed 34 percent of the portable gaming market.
so, ummm, yeah. i'll believe actual market data over your assumptions if it's all the same.
The PSP2 as well, will be interesting to see, as it is apparantly going to be at the level of a PS3 just, in your hands bascially.
Hi people.
Nope, no countdowns here :)
Definitely not watching episodes to get in a Dr Who excitement mood and avoiding articles on digital spy either, no sirree!
hehehehehehehe!!!!
Those are awesome :D
Proof it's happening but not instantaneously. At that rate the handheld market collapses in 2016.
It's also going to head more and more towards iOS and Android because people give their kids the iPhone to keep them amused, there are no buttons to be broken and plenty of child-friendly apps, and the kids are then ingrained in the way of the mobile.
never said it was.
Presumably we are going to need a thread. It just has to be.
i don't disagree. my point is simply that the lack of a media slot had little to do with a failure of sony's device. it's a crowded market and they are facing a lot a pressure.
If you weren't, then I struggle to see what we are arguing over because there is nothing in the paragraph you've just quoted to me that contradicts or challenges what I wrote.
The huge thing is the free and cheap apps as well... If a kid was coming to my house for a weekend I wouldn't buy a wii game for them that would be crazy! But I might put a free kids app on my iPhone...
oooh, so that's christine's excuse ;)
The problem is that these handhelds are at the end of there life cycle. They both suffer massivly from piracy on both systems has killed them. the GO was supposed to combat that.
The tech world has moved on hugely since they were released.
Y
Lack of a media slot is important in the market PSP Go appeared to be aiming for. iOS and Android are in a slightly different but gradually converging one. If you want a device to rely on downloading, you have to convince your market that downloading is the way to go. The PSP Go's core market was too young to be convinced and the slightly older one wants a device that can do more than just games.
Well she gets all the inside goss on the the new apps from Newsbeat ;) (it's on after Blue Peter)
It did, if you look at the hardware sales of the regular PSP and the GO since the GO launched aside from the first week people have been after the original, even when both the GO and its software was cheaper
Heyyyy.
No, that's fair.
:)
newsbeat cover apps?
Newsround!
Not...
...that I know that...
Newsround?
Oh yeah... oooops.... Newsbeat is Radio 1...
Come back John Craven! You don't need to walk around in fields forever!
Hehehe. I sense a kindred spirit :)
A few weeks ago on the BBC News at 6 we were having our dinner at home and they had the entertainment reporter on the news, I sat there went embarrasingly blurted out 'It's Lizo from Newsround on CBBC!!!'
strange looks were had. :)

the devices challenging them for marketshare do not have media slots.
awesome. thanks you.
For multitrack recording and editing, nothing beats Apple Logic Express. There's a learning curve, but once you put in the time, you'll be amazed at how quickly you can edit and produce your show.
You'll be amazed at how quickly you'll want to kill yourself.
oi! i've fixed every issue.
To be fair to Dan... He's made enough money that he hires Jim to do the editing for him!
I believe that is Mr C's excuse as well.
I can't just forgive and forget.
Thats a good point, mobile gaming is dominated by children.
But the games that make the big bucks are the ones aimed at adults (angry Birds Aside).
The Next PSP (the NGP) is trying to do what its predecessor failed to do and bring the big budget titles to a portable to attract adults
Heh...
Bye bye everyone :) See you in a couple of days.
I meant more that the market is going to get even harder to break as the children will grow up into adults with money and they'll have iPods in their heads.
Not literally.
Bye Marti
Its a different market though, the portables are designed to be carried as well as a phone, rather than as a replacement.
In that respect the ipad and tablets are probbaly the best market comparisons, although they still are after different segments
Rose's dad will make it happen though with Trigger from Only Fools
#doctorwhoobsessed
hey all!!
Bye
I was sent this article by fourstar... Do you think the title was a passive aggressive move?

Maybe you could send it to your developer if you are having some issues?
You could use the contact page... Must be Sidepodcast.com/contact/ by now ;)
#insomuchtrouble
are you sure about that? smurf's village and real racing are grossing more than angry birds at the moment. where's the data to back that statement up?
Does anyone want to go to work for me? I believe hugs is a fair currency to pay your services in. Or toast, I can pay you in toast.
Monopoly money is also a viable alternative.
when does this bit happen, I'm still waiting
afternoon :)
True. But by the same token, a lot of the adults who now have iphones grew up using gameboys.
Its interesting that the Wii 2 (out later this year) is supposed to have a tablet like touch screen controller, so we are definatly seeing some convergence in that respect.
hehe. i can estimate time. everything will get done "sumday".
Sidepodtime, innit.
You are picking up stuff that is total rumour. There's no indiciation there will be a Wii 2 this year, there's no indiciation it'll have a touch screen or a tablet, absolutely nothing at all to suggest any of that. It is all literally rumours.
Must run off anyways, see you all later.
*will work for hugs*
And they will be totally flattened by Apple if that's true... the iPod + Apple TV system is more useful and can have games on it too
*waves*
I think Logic reads the comments too. Just crashed.
oooh, did you get your hdmi cable?
nooooooo?!
arse.
Tis okay. Only lost about five minutes of work. Just taking the chance to get a dig in.
not worried about that, worried i just lost my argument ;)
I'm still mad at the screen size.
I did... I haven't tested it yet thought!
Oh charming.
It's conclusive. Logic sux. :)
the screen size?
huh?
bah
I thought I'd get magical 40" full screen ipad and I didn't :(
Sounds like there is nothing better though :(
These stats seem to be hard to come by, all i could find quickly...

Angry Birds is at 70 million http://www.industrygamers.com/news/angry-birds-one-of-the-most-profitable-games-in-history/
Of course angry birds was far cheaper to make
Surely you can't compare Apple to Nintendo, just as you can't compare Microsoft/Xbox to Nintendo. (Slightly) different markets.
you should do, except the ipad isn't 16:9. what do you get?
http://amyfulton.posterous.com/ipad-timing-app-via-hdmi
is that a handheld game then?
yeah, ipad is 4:3 (ish) and your screen is 16:9.
although it doesn't appear to have gone 'full height' either?
nope, thats what annoyed me. I can connect every other device I own to my tv via hdmi and use as much of the screen as possible. that just sat as a wee box in the middle with black around every edge :(
does your tv have an aspect ratio button, it looks like it's trying to be too smart.
No, but the next PSP wants to be beefy enough bring those games to handhelds
I'll have a play around. It's smart enough to handle my laptop and my phone :(
we need alex to test his....
theres a setting in the ipad for tv out where you can turn widescreen on or off, but it doesnt seem to make any difference
for movies, i'd assume.
ooh i should test that, i downloaded the 99c rental of the week :D
This seems to imply you can go full screen http://kotaku.com/#!5793881/ipad-2-racer-delivers-high-def-gaming-to-televisions
Video of it here http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r25658129-iPad-2-HDMI-Out-video-.
with my tv settings i can change it to full, zoom, wide zoom or normal. zoom makes it bigger but chops off the top and bottom, wide zoom makes it wider but still not full height. Wide zoom will be my future choice. I've had this tv for 3 years and never changed that before :D
only that app though. the home screen won't. developers need to redesign etc.
bugger. would be a shame if it doesn't do full height :(
Ah so the app resoloution wont support full screen?
What happens if you change the ipad output to 720p?
I can confirm that when playing movies it goes full screen.
And rather than mirroring the ipad says 'tv connected: this video is playing on the tv'
yeah i will (or should). the ipad is 4:3 so it can do 1080p height and what ever that is width-wise. full screen but not full width unless supported by the app in question, i think?
*it will
you can't change the output
he's a good screenshot: http://www.blogcdn.com/hd.engadget.com/media/2011/03/ipad2-mirroring.jpg
Hmm, Amy what happens if you unplug the cable and plug it back into the tv while the app is running? *grasping at straws*
if you can afford it, real racing 2, sounds like a good investment.
not a thing.
here is an example of a full screen movie file :D
http://tinypic.com/r/1z1z1oh/7
arrrrrgh!!
:)
I totally did that on purpose :D
Hehehehe! It's like a rickroll but different.
*cries*
why demonstrate with a properly attained high quality itunes file when I can demonstrate with a file I converted to ipad format myself :)
If you rotate the ipad does the image on the screen rotate? maybe its something to do wit the tv wanting to leave enough room for that?
it does, it still doesn't go full height though.
I have F1 timing on: http://www.flickr.com/photos/alexandronov/5640105173/

apple hates sony. and panasonic.
The gap doesn't seem to be as big as it is on Amy's.

and the article:

yaaayyy!! :)
none of my settings made it better :(
*hands baton to alex*
if I change it to 'wide' (which is the 'wide zoom' i mentioned earlier) like they say the gap gets smaller but it doesn't disappear the whole way.
oooh mine on wide cuts off the top and the bottom...
I dont suppose you can change it to 4:3 anywhere
That squishes things
nope
Undo Undo Undo!
Poor little things :)
Alex do you have a monitor with a HDMI Slot?

Ok, mad last chance idea
Amy what happend if you connect your ps3 to the tv, set at 720p, then quickly swap the cable into the ipad?
Maybe in all the confusion the tv will forget how antisocial it is and work?
my tv automatically detects what resolution the device it's connected to is outputting
why the 720p obsession? i've missed something, the ipad2 is 1080p the ipad 1 i think is 720p.
Yes the iPad 2 is 1080p
that's what i thought.
£10.80 is a bargain
Unless the app has been upgraded wont it be 720p?
the black frame issiue might be because the tv is reciving 720p output at 1080p?
so if you can trick the ipad to output to 720p it may work?
no.
HDMI accessory that will do full display mirroring for iPad up to 1080p
Ah, ok, that was the train of thought behind the 720p :)
but what if the app itself only renders in 720p?
gotya. i need a device to know more, but i think that it does 1080 out except for movies which are downloaded from the store at 720p.
ah, i remember from the early days of the ps3 some of the ported games only displayed in 720p. it would upscale dvds but not programs for some reason
Hiiiiii :D
'ello!
as a person who can't tell the different between 720 and 1080, i can't say i'm that bothered. but without a device i can't check sadly.
Sitting outside with my computer in the shade is even nicer than I thought it was gonna be
Just read this in the taxi from benson. http://bbc.in/hzB23t
so many mistakes. he doesn't have a clue of the difference between free to air, free to view
and payperview vs subscription
Oh yeah... What an eejit
can't be arsed to read his stuff anymore. is he worried about his job?
It's just a ridiculous article. There's a clear difference between pay per view and putting it on a subscription only channel.
Weird story of the week. Team Lotus to buy Caterham.
For those who don't know the history Lotus made a car called the Lotus 7 in the 60s and when they decided it had reached the end of its life they sold the rights to it to Caterham who have been making Caterham 7s ever since. The car still looks more or less like the Lotus 7. So now team Lotus is going to buy Caterham it's like history in reverse. Of course it gives Tony Fernandes a car manufacturer so he can prove that he can make a success off making cars without billions in government finance.

wow!
Now for some comedy.
Last night was the final of the Copa del Rey (Spanish FA cup) and Real Madrid beat Barcelona to take the cup. Unfortunately the cup needs some panel beating now

I'm loving this!
Woah
Evening!
MartiV8 won't be happy
Love it, absolutely perfect
If true, which it probably isn't
#cynic
You're gonna need a bigger telly ;)
probably true :)
1080p [or i] only becomes apparent above 40" apparently. Or there abouts
standing how close though?
How close do you want to get? :)
My knowledge is limited but I think that's for the average Joe
i mean, on a 40" can you tell from your sofa?
Oh yes, regular viewing distance. But my friend's mother-in-law can't tell the difference between his 1080p and standard def so, YMMV
I hate Wordpress's iPad format, I wish I could switch it off
heheh.
Anyone know what time Skynet attacks, was it in GMT, EST or PST?
I have to go out now, the hoodie may be helpful
i might play some guns n' roses, see what happens.
I'll risk it, even if I am wearing my Bladerunner, Tyrell Corporation T-shirt
Later Mr C
*nods*
i'm trying desperately to design a really nice set of overalls for Mclaren..but nothing is coming out as well as i'd hoped!
#reallywantstowin
#notcompetitive
for the bgp? urm, what about some retro orange mclaren colours?
or maybe black mclaren, like GMM suggested over winter.
yeah.. i think i read somewhere you get to be their guest for the 3 days too.. and well that makes the competition a whole lot more important to me :)
am not a fan of the bright yucky colours.. lol look at how well the bright red overalls went down this weekend..
#wantspeopletolikeher
atm i have black/carbon fibre.. which looks nice.. but it's nothing special.. wish i knew some fashion students at uni! :)
ahh that would help. ron likes pure white, how white can you make them?
Calm your mind and let you thoughts flow....and other zen rubbish.
Don't worry about it. It will be fine
if you cover them with boxes of white then very white...
I like the blue on the palette
:D
Maybe you need these. I love them because they are real and prove that all technology is not progress.
http://bit.ly/ftYuML
I need some of those.
♥

Is there a clip-on version by any chance?
:)
It would probably have helped if the overalls had looked like something McLaren might possibly have approved, as opposed to, say, their arch-rivals Ferrari...
I know nothing other than they were mentioned on a Twit show. Scott Johnson was talking about getting them so he can go to 3D movies with his family. His left eye is so bad that he can't see 3D and he gets terrible headaches so he loved these.
Apparently they originated as an April fool joke and then someone actually made them
3D glasses on top of normal glasses is a real pain. I had no idea until I got to the stage where I needed reading glasses. I saw some 3D thing on the net recently and trying to balance 3d glasses with proper glasses is so difficult
It's so weird that the movie studios are still pushing a technology that makes half the population sick.
Possibly because from his perspective the only relevant distinction in the debate is whether the viewer has to pay an extra charge for the broadcast or whether it comes automatically with the standard viewing package.
Because if they don't, they feel the download market will swallow them. Fear causes the strangest responses...
I guess enough people pay to watch that it is worth the cost. Does seem odd to eliminate so many people
new from mclaren: http://mclaren.com/page/track-the-trucks
From Monday April 25 we’ll be live all week from the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes’ truck fleet as they transport the team’s equipment from the McLaren Technology Centre to Istanbul for the Turkish Grand Prix. The route takes us from England, down through France and underneath the alps using the Mont Blanc tunnel to the Italian port of Trieste. Then it’s on to the ferry for the journey to Istanbul. If you see our trucks anywhere on the road over the next week take a pic and upload it through facebook.com/vodafonemclarenmercedes and the best ones will appear on McLaren.com!
#rankings
Oooh!
Have we ever live commented a 5 day truck journey?
FBFB? :D
Hehe!
the bbc may not need a studio any more: http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2011/04/21/on-the-f1-engines-of-2013/
My fellow blogger James Allen has written about the idea of cars running only on electric power in the pitlane in the future
w00t!
Truck tracking, like flights?
Hi folks.
I can't make up my mind if this is a good idea or not. Instinct says not but I need to think more.
One thing it is not going to affect however is BBC needing a studio. It means the cars will be quiet in the pit lane but they will be just as loud in the garages when they are heating up engines before they go out
Yes
ahhhh, bugger.
I accidentally fell asleep outside :P Luckily not burnt but I am now FREEZING :D
That was mooted a few months ago. I look forward to pit personnel being run over in free practice because they can't hear the cars.
ah. they need a comedy reversing beep.
Considering the major electrical issues teams have all had with KERS, I look forward to people all over the pit lane being run over if the cars malfunction and won't stop :P
Allan McNish tweeted his new car
http://twitpic.com/4nlquc
Beep. Warning. This vehicle is pitting.
Ooh
Isn't that what the weird Brazilian siren thingy is?
yeah, I did the same thing! Me likey!
It would be unfortunate to be burnt and frozen
That was my first thought. That and the world title being decided because someone's engine would not re-start
I wish they could take the shark fin off. The car would look great without it
Only at pit entry though. Once the car gets closer people hear the engine. Imagine some engineer deep in conversation on his headset as a car approaches silently at 50 mph
Conspiracy theory time.
Fernandes is buying Caterham and Caterham are working with Lola on their latest car and Lola have built more single seater race cars than even Dany Bahar can count to.
http://www.caterham-spr.com/heritage.php
help me join the dots... where's the conspiracy? tony is going sportscasr racing against dany?
Maybe he is going to get Lola involved with his F1 team. If he loses one famous British name in the courts or settles out of court maybe he will pick up another famous British name for his team
ooooooh!
It is a huge stretch from the info available but it's fun to speculate. I wonder if Martin Birrane wants to be in F1
Nice idea. I think he was burned by the Mosley/FIA 'approval' process last time but if someone buys him in and runs it for him, maybe
something in my head says lola wanted an fia f1 licence, or was that someone else?
They did for this year I think but pulled out.
For 2010.
I think there was a lola project among the dozen or so applications but I have a feeling they withdrew rather than were thrown out.
Birrane only bought the company a few years ago. It was started and run for most of its life by Eric Broadley who was a Colin Chapman type engineer/manager although not as outspoken or high risk as Chapman
I think the Master Card thing was a final attempt for Broadley to get back into F1 before he retired
Darth Vader :"Will you join the Dark Side?"
Little girl: "Sure"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yYVtkDDumG8&feature=player_embedded
She should be allowed to join the dark side if that is what she wants
Sure. You can't have the Jedis without the dark side.
At least they were nice enough to show her to the Sith academy. Sweet.
Apparently Patrick Head started at Lola, if this is right
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lola_Cars
A lot of technical people did. There were quite a few F1 technical directors started there. Patrick Head certainly did and I think John Barnard too. I am sure there was a time when something like three future F1 tech directors worked there at the same time
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Barnard
has this video of hamilton and stewart been plugged/discussed?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O0cPa3wUm6w
I haven't seen any discussion of it. For some odd reason it won't play for me. Just get the swirly thing and nothing happens. I will try later when I don;t have a million other things running
Nice, but it plays like a slideshow with an audio track...
odd, it's okay for me?
Probably my FF which has been playing up lately. Everything is slow in it.
wordpress etc
boo. christine went back to chrome, but it'd been okay for me.
I mean all I've got open is this page, WP, Youtube and Absolute radio and I've got large memory usage on FF and large CPU usage on 'plugin-container.exe' which is also FF.
It kept crashing for me.
have you tried 'restart with add-ons disabled'?
That seems okay but it likes to think about life when it first starts up.
No I was just looking at the plugin list to see what I've got, turns out a lot different media players have left their mark.
Nice set of tweets from Steve Matchett on watching the Senna movie, meeting the director. I really like Steve.
Was astounded when the film's writer Manish Pandey (@mpandey69) introduced himself to me and said he was somewhat nervous when he
discovered my name was on the guest list. He said that because I was one of those working in the pit lane at the time of Senna's
dominance of F1, was working in the Imola pit lane on that fateful day, that it was important to him that the film should look perfect.
Honestly, I don't think I have ever been paid a higher compliment. Certainly the film does look very beautiful. The quality is 100%.
Some of the 1990 footage took me straight back to the pit lane: the cars, the sounds, even the smells of the track, all felt real to me.
If you have never worked inside the Formula 1 paddock & would like to sample the fraught passion within that world, you must watch 'Senna'.
might be that they're not ready for 4 yet.
This makes me feel a bit better: http://kottke.org/11/04/youre-missing-out-on-everything but not a lot.
That's nice
Good point.
that is very nice. and steve needs a blog :)
:D
I wish I owned a foot spa right now

Have done the daily but I really do apologise if it's not as indepth as usual. It's been a proper Thursday today and I've not long got lot home from work after a mental day, but it's all done and justed and I'm off to bed to dream non Thursday dreams :)
I imagine the Easter rush is a bit mad.
De-stress: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ewdbilSWjaM
Sweet dreams!
ooh
Can I blame Mr C for killing my computer? Everything was going nicely till he posted the youtube link. Now it won't play youtube, or iplayer or the podcast and everything it does do is so slow. Also after a re-boot skype was using over70 MB of memory which is very odd.
sounds like flash crashed.
:D
A pretty Flash thing to do :(
Ah now that is something that happens more often for me these days too. FF survives but flash likes a good crash.
My browser flash plugin crashes about 3 times a day of late... Goodness knows what's wrong with it....
it used to take out the browser, so you blamed the browser. browser makers got wise to this, so now you blame the right culprit :)
there's never been anything right with it.
I have re-booted twice and it is just the same. If flash crashes I get a jigsaw piece icon
Mine like to crash at least once a day too
Well no but I've never been forced to use anything that crashed quite this much before. If it was my computer doing it, I'd replace it, it's flipping annoying!
My old clockwork XP machine does everything that my laptop won't
Even the Hamilton/Stewart video worked

Slight headache still, even though there's a holiday tomorrow I'm wiped out enough for an early night as I can't seem to commit to any more reading or listening or telly-watching.. Golf in the morning! Goodnight.
Goodnight!
