We have a nice break this weekend, for many of us it is a four-day weekend for Easter with Good Friday tomorrow and a holiday on Monday too (with due apologies to those working in retail or in places around the world without time off). And with the extra holiday next Friday for the Royal Wedding we get two long weekends in a row - bonus!

Most forms of racing are taking a break too, meaning we can have a nice little rest to recover after the opening salvos in all the major series. How will you spend yours?

Lots to plug on the site at the moment, far more than can be included here. What you should do is go to the homepage and just start reading and listening! Lots of good stuff.

Whilst enjoying your favourite F1 podcast, if you are also a fan of IndyCar perhaps you might start thinking, "I wish there was a podcast a bit like this for IndyCar". I'd like to direct you to More Front Wing with Steph and Paul and some special guests in each show. I recommend show 36 with Shane comparing F1 to IndyCar, show 38 with James Hinchcliffe, and show 39 with Pippa Mann, who will be the first British woman to enter the Indy 500, and blogger extroadinaire Jeff Iannucci.

F1 news seems a bit thin at the moment, but that's not unusual at the start of a 3-week break after 3 races so close to each other. Natural downtime. There's a bit of rampant speculation about Murdoch buying F1 which I don't believe for one second so I've chosen to ignore it.

Do keep an eye on my blog tomorrow for some Friday Favourites, links to interesting racing articles I've found. I'd gladly include some of them here too but I haven't got around to making the list yet!

Races This Weekend

Most of the major series take a break, although we do have a test at Le Mans and a bit of tintop and F3 action.

  • Le Mans Test Day. You can see a list of testers here with an update here (thanks to Gabriel and Alianora). This is our first look at Audi vs Peugeot in 2011 at La Sarthe itself. Audi will be bringing their brand new yet-to-be-raced (but heavily tested) R18 coupe, let's see how it stacks up against the new 908!
  • World Touring Cars, Zolder, Belgium
  • NASCAR Nationwide Series & Truck Series, Nashville, Tennessee, USA. The main Cup Series takes a week off, but the second-tier Nationwide race is 12.30am Saturday night / Sunday morning.
  • British F3 & GT, Oulton Park, Cheshire, UK. Leigh will again be in attendance through the BF3 weekend, you can keep up with his reports at the F1 & Motorsports Archive.

The following weekend it picks up again when we have IndyCar, MotoGP, DTM, NASCAR, V8 Supercar and BTCC.

If you have a long Easter weekend take it easy, relax and do enjoy it! Mine's a pint.

Yes, have to take the public wraps off of new cars and pilots sometime--all rookie pilots must complete ten laps in order to compete. NASCAR's Michael Waltrip is one of them. Should be interesting.

They drink that all the time in Turkey, in little glasses, even in the heat of the day. Must say it was very refreshing. I brought some back for Mum but not me. :(

I can see this being the start of an epic tea collection - the actual shop didn't have most of the yummy looking flavours on the website but the website has free shipping if you spend more than $60. $60 buys a lot of tea.

today I spent $28.25 and I only bought two types, so maybe $60 will only buy four teas :D

in the actual shop they have samples of about 30 flavours, I like fruity drinks so everytime I walk past I see what fruit samples they have. I've liked all the ones I've tried so far. All the actual tea-like ones all taste the same to me.

A quick question for more technical folk - do the regs state an F1 car must have 7 forward gears? Is there anything to stop a team building a gearbox with either 6 or 8 forward gears?

I'm not bothered about the practicalities pf doing it - just wondering if the amount of gears is cemented in the rules

  • Alianora La Canta21/04/2011 at 10:51

    Are CVTs banned?

Yes, they are. Williams wanted to introduce it in the late 1990s but the FIA said "no" because it would make the gearshifts too quick (i.e. instantaneous on the grounds of not needing to happen). Gearshifts are banned from being quicker than 0.025 seconds for this reason.

  • Leigh O'Gorman21/04/2011 at 10:52

I thought the seamless shift boxes jumped quicker than that?

  • Alianora La Canta21/04/2011 at 10:55

A quick question for more technical folk - do the regs state an F1 car must have 7 forward gears? Is there anything to stop a team building a gearbox with either 6 or 8 forward gears?

You can have 6 gears if you like. Technically, you can have one gear if you like because the rule mandating a minimum of 4 got dropped a while ago.

  • Leigh O'Gorman21/04/2011 at 10:55

Virgin and HRt are only running one gear, right?

    (eyy-ohhhh)

    ;)

  • Alianora La Canta21/04/2011 at 10:57

I thought the seamless shift boxes jumped quicker than that?

No. They were limited to 0.025 seconds because a number had to be given to differentiate between standard and CVT gearboxes. Intruigingly, it is now possible to have a CVT provided it only distributes KERS power and not the power of the main engine.

It's the first real dedicated handheld games console to do that though and it just sold really very very badly. Even sony admitted today it was a big flop

  • Lukeh21/04/2011 at 12:39

Obviously the market is there though as you say but what can you do when you have competition like the iPod or iphone who's games, albeit not as in depth as a full game you'd see for a PSP, are priced at a few pound compared to £30 releases for the psp?

Interesting debate somewhere in there though I reckons, may blog about it after work tonight

I didn't even know it existed. Bad marketing may be at least partially responsible for the PSP Go's failure. Also, the Playstation is something I understood to be aimed at the "cool kids" - the sort of people who needed the retail box and paraphenalia to show off to their friends. The iPod Touch is aimed at a slightly more mature audience which prefers the convenience of downloading.

  • Alianora La Canta21/04/2011 at 12:42

but the pressure is coming from android and ios, not retail boxed games, surely?

It'll be from retail games - Android and iOs aren't games consoles but multi-use platforms, so they're in slightly different markets. I suspect they will converge in the next decade and the multi-use platform will win, but the battle's still being fought.

  • Mr C21/04/2011 at 12:42

    It'll be from retail games.

what are you basing that assumption on?

  • Alianora La Canta21/04/2011 at 12:47

what are you basing that assumption on?

Looking at what the platforms are and what they're used for. There's still a large market in the handheld games console, particularly among pre-teens (who have been used to having kid's games consoles since the mid-1980s. The teen market has abandoned that and gone for the sort of mainstream multi-purpose platforms previously the reserve of adults (having had a smooth progression from mobile phones with feature creep).

Gradually, as the multi-purpose platforms get cheaper and more convenient, the age at which the transfer happens will reduce until the dedicated handheld games console platform is gone. However, the legacy of the technologies having used different paths to get there has meant that the multi-purpose platform has not instantly replaced handhelds, especially among the younger set.

I dont really do any mobile gaming as i prefer my home console and i dont have to share a TV :)

But In my view of gaming I thing there is a big gap between what the PSP does vs the iphone/android.

Its like the Wii vs the 360/PS3.

The first shifts lots of hardware with simple and innovative games. But the big multi million dollar making AAA games only appear on the latter.

The DS sits somewhere in between, but i havent seen many games on the iphone of the size i would expect from a PSP game. Also the lack of buttons is an issiue.

the PS Phone thing could be an interesting hybrid

According to a new report from research firm Flurry Analytics, Nintendo's share of the portable gaming market in the U.S. slipped from 70 percent in 2009 to 57 percent in 2010. Sony's PlayStation Portable, meanwhile, saw its market share figures drop from 11 percent to 9 percent year over year. The big winners in 2010, according to Flurry, were iOS- and Android-based devices, which nabbed 34 percent of the portable gaming market.

so, ummm, yeah. i'll believe actual market data over your assumptions if it's all the same.

Proof it's happening but not instantaneously. At that rate the handheld market collapses in 2016.

It's also going to head more and more towards iOS and Android because people give their kids the iPhone to keep them amused, there are no buttons to be broken and plenty of child-friendly apps, and the kids are then ingrained in the way of the mobile.

i don't disagree. my point is simply that the lack of a media slot had little to do with a failure of sony's device. it's a crowded market and they are facing a lot a pressure.

Lack of a media slot is important in the market PSP Go appeared to be aiming for. iOS and Android are in a slightly different but gradually converging one. If you want a device to rely on downloading, you have to convince your market that downloading is the way to go. The PSP Go's core market was too young to be convinced and the slightly older one wants a device that can do more than just games.

  • Lukeh21/04/2011 at 13:05

    hey all!!

    afternoon :)

  • Nick21/04/2011 at 13:06

I meant more that the market is going to get even harder to break as the children will grow up into adults with money and they'll have iPods in their heads.

True. But by the same token, a lot of the adults who now have iphones grew up using gameboys.

Its interesting that the Wii 2 (out later this year) is supposed to have a tablet like touch screen controller, so we are definatly seeing some convergence in that respect.

  • Mr C21/04/2011 at 13:06

I was sent this article by fourstar... Do you think the title was a passive aggressive move?

hehe. i can estimate time. everything will get done "sumday".

You are picking up stuff that is total rumour. There's no indiciation there will be a Wii 2 this year, there's no indiciation it'll have a touch screen or a tablet, absolutely nothing at all to suggest any of that. It is all literally rumours.

Must run off anyways, see you all later.

  • Mr C21/04/2011 at 13:08

Does anyone want to go to work for me? I believe hugs is a fair currency to pay your services in. Or toast, I can pay you in toast.

    *will work for hugs*

And they will be totally flattened by Apple if that's true... the iPod + Apple TV system is more useful and can have games on it too

  • Nick21/04/2011 at 13:12

are you sure about that? smurf's village and real racing are grossing more than angry birds at the moment. where's the data to back that statement up?

These stats seem to be hard to come by, all i could find quickly...

Call of duty made $1 Billion in revenue in 6 weeks: http://news.cnet.com/8301-13506_3-20026321-17.html

Angry Birds is at 70 million http://www.industrygamers.com/news/angry-birds-one-of-the-most-profitable-games-in-history/

Of course angry birds was far cheaper to make

Surely you can't compare Apple to Nintendo, just as you can't compare Microsoft/Xbox to Nintendo. (Slightly) different markets.

nope, thats what annoyed me. I can connect every other device I own to my tv via hdmi and use as much of the screen as possible. that just sat as a wee box in the middle with black around every edge :(

  • Mr C21/04/2011 at 13:17

does your tv have an aspect ratio button, it looks like it's trying to be too smart.

  • Nick21/04/2011 at 13:17

No, but the next PSP wants to be beefy enough bring those games to handhelds

with my tv settings i can change it to full, zoom, wide zoom or normal. zoom makes it bigger but chops off the top and bottom, wide zoom makes it wider but still not full height. Wide zoom will be my future choice. I've had this tv for 3 years and never changed that before :D

Ah so the app resoloution wont support full screen?

What happens if you change the ipad output to 720p?

  • Amy21/04/2011 at 13:27

I can confirm that when playing movies it goes full screen.

And rather than mirroring the ipad says 'tv connected: this video is playing on the tv'

  • Mr C21/04/2011 at 13:28

Ah so the app resoloution wont support full screen?

yeah i will (or should). the ipad is 4:3 so it can do 1080p height and what ever that is width-wise. full screen but not full width unless supported by the app in question, i think?

    Ok, mad last chance idea

Amy what happend if you connect your ps3 to the tv, set at 720p, then quickly swap the cable into the ipad?

Maybe in all the confusion the tv will forget how antisocial it is and work?

  • Amy21/04/2011 at 14:02

Weird story of the week. Team Lotus to buy Caterham.

For those who don't know the history Lotus made a car called the Lotus 7 in the 60s and when they decided it had reached the end of its life they sold the rights to it to Caterham who have been making Caterham 7s ever since. The car still looks more or less like the Lotus 7. So now team Lotus is going to buy Caterham it's like history in reverse. Of course it gives Tony Fernandes a car manufacturer so he can prove that he can make a success off making cars without billions in government finance.

Last night was the final of the Copa del Rey (Spanish FA cup) and Real Madrid beat Barcelona to take the cup. Unfortunately the cup needs some panel beating now

    MartiV8 won't be happy

I know nothing other than they were mentioned on a Twit show. Scott Johnson was talking about getting them so he can go to 3D movies with his family. His left eye is so bad that he can't see 3D and he gets terrible headaches so he loved these.

3D glasses on top of normal glasses is a real pain. I had no idea until I got to the stage where I needed reading glasses. I saw some 3D thing on the net recently and trying to balance 3d glasses with proper glasses is so difficult

so many mistakes. he doesn't have a clue of the difference between free to air, free to view

Possibly because from his perspective the only relevant distinction in the debate is whether the viewer has to pay an extra charge for the broadcast or whether it comes automatically with the standard viewing package.

    new from mclaren: http://mclaren.com/page/track-the-trucks

From Monday April 25 we’ll be live all week from the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes’ truck fleet as they transport the team’s equipment from the McLaren Technology Centre to Istanbul for the Turkish Grand Prix. The route takes us from England, down through France and underneath the alps using the Mont Blanc tunnel to the Italian port of Trieste. Then it’s on to the ferry for the journey to Istanbul. If you see our trucks anywhere on the road over the next week take a pic and upload it through facebook.com/vodafonemclarenmercedes and the best ones will appear on McLaren.com!

I can't make up my mind if this is a good idea or not. Instinct says not but I need to think more.

One thing it is not going to affect however is BBC needing a studio. It means the cars will be quiet in the pit lane but they will be just as loud in the garages when they are heating up engines before they go out

Nice set of tweets from Steve Matchett on watching the Senna movie, meeting the director. I really like Steve.

Was astounded when the film's writer Manish Pandey (@mpandey69) introduced himself to me and said he was somewhat nervous when he

discovered my name was on the guest list. He said that because I was one of those working in the pit lane at the time of Senna's

dominance of F1, was working in the Imola pit lane on that fateful day, that it was important to him that the film should look perfect.

Honestly, I don't think I have ever been paid a higher compliment. Certainly the film does look very beautiful. The quality is 100%.

Some of the 1990 footage took me straight back to the pit lane: the cars, the sounds, even the smells of the track, all felt real to me.

If you have never worked inside the Formula 1 paddock & would like to sample the fraught passion within that world, you must watch 'Senna'.

Ah now that is something that happens more often for me these days too. FF survives but flash likes a good crash.

My browser flash plugin crashes about 3 times a day of late... Goodness knows what's wrong with it....

it used to take out the browser, so you blamed the browser. browser makers got wise to this, so now you blame the right culprit :)

I have re-booted twice and it is just the same. If flash crashes I get a jigsaw piece icon

Well no but I've never been forced to use anything that crashed quite this much before. If it was my computer doing it, I'd replace it, it's flipping annoying!

Slight headache still, even though there's a holiday tomorrow I'm wiped out enough for an early night as I can't seem to commit to any more reading or listening or telly-watching.. Golf in the morning! Goodnight.
