Hey there folks! It’s the Wednesday before Easter! Did you enjoy the Grand Prix? I hope you did, I thought it was fantastic!  If you haven’t had a chance to yet, check out the latest debrief

In fact, there have been plenty of posts lately on Sidepodcast … for example the Tweets of the Week and Christine’s Rankings – but also Amy has written a great two part special on the Fanvision (formerly KangarooTV) device – well worth checking out!

You MUST also check out Jalopnik’s F1 review in Crayola – love the pics!  Perhaps they miss PicApp too?  One of the pics pokes a little bit of fun at Jenson Button’s pitlane mishap – so Andy Blackmore (the Spotter’s Guides guy) has made a helpful reminder for him :D

I must admit I thought Webber was the best driver of the Chinese GP, but BadgerGP disagrees and thinks it was Hamilton.  Close call I suppose.  If you have a subscription to Autosport, Adam Cooper has a great analysis of how Hamilton won the race – and also revealed that McLaren planned to do a two-stopper and switched during the race.  Mmm, strategy so good it’s gonna have to be blogged about ;)

At least with Vettel not winning we didn’t have to see the finger – although Anthony Davidson found a great mimic!

Couple of funny stories from WTF1 for you – the top 10 motorsport fails and F1’s got Talent.

Road & Track have a great article on Google Earth mapping racetracks from around the world.  If I remember rightly, Ollie did that too.  Shame he’s not blogging much these days…

Some non-F1 stuff for you now:

So that’s all from me.  I will be around in the comments today but I am going away to Berlin for Easter after that.  So if I don’t see you in the comments, have a great Easter and I will see you next week!

I do move fast. I drive a little too fast sometimes, too.

English as a Second Language went down the tubes for me when I really pictured myself teaching grammar. Yuck. Who knows what the future will bring, but that's not what grabs me right now.

Pat, are you going to the Festival of Speed? I know I have notes on this somewhere when I asked this, I'll have to look those up.

Potentially yes. I was thinking about my options and I think this year is a budget year, so I might do 3 days at the Festival instead of 1 day plus a GP.

The other option was none at the FoS and do a GP :)

But I'd like to go if I can.

Yes.. sadly I also have to pay a credit card, and I think I'd like to change my car rather than put this one through another winter. So a chunk of F1 money has to go to that instead as it always seems to.

That seems like good priority-setting, though, and your different car will get you to many more GP's.

Heh, only that this car has cost me quite a bit in repairs and running costs and has high mileage. It is costing me the chance to go places. Although it has been fine for nearly a year I mentally picture it as a costly car and you wonder what'll happen next. I've only ever been to two GPs, can't stretch to £400 a year on them.

  • Pat W20/04/2011 at 00:30

I've had several cars like that, and it gets to a point where you need to make a change so it's cheaper in the long run.

  • Pat W20/04/2011 at 00:32

Absolutely. This cost me a lot last year. Unlike my last two cars it seems to be fine at the moment (the others cost and cost and cost). Cars are a pain in the backside!

  • Kai20/04/2011 at 00:33

I need to sit down and go over the cost of everything, so I'd like to get an idea of how many days people were going to go for. But I asked this a while ago and I feel bad asking again. I know I saved some notes about it.

Different people are doing different things, best thing is to work out how long you want to be there for and then we'll all work something out. It is a great event to explore alone too.

I've only ever done a single day though so I'm not sure if a weekend alone would work, kind of think I'd get a bit bored for 3 days. Perhaps the secret is not to rush around like a headless chicken trying to see everything in one day but that's all I know :)

But yeah I think a few are doing 3 days, no doubt we'll have later-committers who might only do one.

If a small group decided to do 3 days with a local hotel I'd be more tempted to do 3 days and join at the hotel even though I'm only 2 hours away by car.

The trouble with going for one day is you are guaranteed to miss things.. last year was my 4th and with some pretty good planning I saw a lot of what I wanted, bumped into famous people, and still missed things I wanted to see. If you do Sat/Sun you can spread it out a bit and not feel rushed or that you have to move on to not miss the next thing.

  • Kai20/04/2011 at 00:50

Yes you should definitely see what else is going on, if something clashes. Even one day at FoS is great and you don't have to rush about, it is what you make it.

  • Pat W20/04/2011 at 00:53

It also took a lot of luck :) But in some respects you make your own luck, like putting yourself in the paddock before the cars come back down the hill so you can see the drivers get out.. but in doing that you miss the next lot of cars, which could be interesting or could be something totally obscure.. and decipering the obscure program to see what's on when..

  • Steven Roy20/04/2011 at 00:53

I think if you spent a week there you would still find that you missed stuff

When more people are around I might raise this, see what costs might be. If you join us you do, if you don't you don't. The group doesn't have to stick together like limpets all weekend anyway, the place is so huge and we've got different interests.

  • Kai20/04/2011 at 00:56

  • Pat W20/04/2011 at 01:02

I did that a little bit, Lou was doing it a lot to get shots of drivers :) You don't have to do it at all if cars/driver (delete as appropriate) aren't your thing. Easy to just sit trackside all day, or stay in the paddock all day and not see a car on track. Or go the classic car / modern supercar area with the jazz garden party...

  • Pat W20/04/2011 at 01:07

Anyway its all good fun, you can rush about or amble along. If you go for one day or two or three we'll surely make a point to meet up somewhen*. If it is an afternoon or a whole weekend, something will be worked out. People will come and go.

    (*local Dorset word I think)

  • Amy20/04/2011 at 01:07

i would like to go to the FoS one day but in the choice between that or a GP the race weekend would win every time

For me the cost of a GP is more paletteable if there's a long trip somewhere exciting along with it.. I happily paid it for Belgium but find it hard at home. Odd really. Also no accomodation around Silverstone, bit of a problem.

And the mix of modern and historic F1 (and non-F1) drivers and cars is a huge draw for me.

I'm watching "The Space Age: NASA's Story", among other things. They're talking about Apollo 8 now, and the first time they circled around the moon and say the earth rise. Amazing.

  • Amy20/04/2011 at 01:16

For me the cost of a GP is more paletteable if there's a long trip somewhere exciting along with it.. I happily paid it for Belgium but find it hard at home. Odd really. Also no accomodation around Silverstone, bit of a problem.

long trips are exciting but i much prefer the cheapness of a local race. I Guess silverstone is a bit different since it's not in a city. Melbourne and Singapores lack of travel make me find other tracks quite a mission but I'm still willing to try. This may be why i have mostly depleted my savings account :D

Those guys were incredible. Imagine going off to go round the moon and having no idea if the technology would work there.

Earthrise is one of the most famous photos ever

Incredible. Really incredible, the whole team, mostly the guys in floating in the tin can.

Earthrise is one of the most famous photos ever

Imagine being the first humans to ever see that. *chills*

Too bad they ruined it by reading from Genesis. ;)

They always have to drag religion in it

    :)

They always have to drag religion in it

I get the impact on them and how they wanted to represent that, but, umm, most of the planet is not Christian.

Americans do big stuff and then leave a bad taste in your mouth. It's a gift.

That said if this happened, would this mean that F1 cars would only have wings on the right side?

Loads of fun links, as always. :-) You should have come to Cologne, Gavin! :-)

Next time, I promise! I'm going down with my parents in law so I'm sorta tagging along, but it's free transport so it should be fun ;)

The Turun Sanomat newspaper says there has been 148 overtakings this season...

In China we saw 63 overtakings. The last time there was a Grand Prix like that was 20 years ago!

  • Amy20/04/2011 at 07:57

Your top 10 motorsport fail link has me watching the start of the 2005 US GP again. I still don't know if it was luck or not that that was the only race I slept through that year :) It was nice not to get up at 5am to watch it, but on the other hand, I really would've been watching history :D

My boyfriend watched it and I'm sure he would have woken me up to watch if I hadn't had an exam at 8.30 that morning. Poor timing Otago University, poor timing.

I only finally watched the race in full last year, after realising I still hadn't seen it.

from all my blog and twitter trawling of people who were there last year, they all said it was a little odd, but they all seemed to really enjoy their time there. Sounds like the locals bent over backwards to make F1 welcome.

Well, it's a country without motorsport culture, so obviously it may not be the same as the Albert Park (you are Australian, aren' you?)

Anyway last year it rained a lot, hope this year it will stay dry!

Never heard of the company, but all sponsorship is worthwhile right now.

Rodac International, worldwide supplier of pneumatic equipment to the automotive industry, has concluded a sponsor agreement with the Team Lotus Formula One team. For the next three years Rodac provides Team Lotus with tools and garage equipment which makes Rodac an official supplier to the Anglo- Malaysian F1 team.

I didn't get much choice in watching the race - there was a huge thunderstorm that started just before the coverage did and ended two hours after the race. Not being allowed to use the computers during a thunderstorm, it was sit there and watch the race and sit there reading and trying to ignore it. At least Tiago Monteiro did something worth watching (from my biased Jordan supporter's viewpoint).

Hi guys, just a quick hello as I'm going to watch the second half of FP2 from Friday [hate it when practice coincides with work].

Anywho just had to say: yay I'm going to Korea! :D Thanks Amy!!!

And congrats to Kai for the career change!

  • Amy20/04/2011 at 11:35

And congrats to Kai for the career change!

Wow, just read this, awesome stuff Kai :)

  • Leigh O'Gorman20/04/2011 at 11:35

    Didn't see this at all

    mm. Okay.

So, I really am going into business for myself, I'm not kidding. I've made a decision about my next step. I'm going to become a life coach specializing in stress management for teachers, and I'll work with kids to teach them life skills, too. I get trained next month, and I can start as soon as I can get my stuff together.

    Good stuff Kai!!

    Best of luck

    :)

the people I work with do all their work for the contractors a day in advance and since Friday is a public holiday the contractors aren't working so theres no work for them on Thursday. Theres still work for me since I don't do what they do, but the boss told me not to come in and I don't need to be told twice.

Yeah I know. Can just be frustrating I guess.

Had a phone interview the other day for the first time and it was a bit bleh. It can be frustrating when I'm incredibly determined to find something, so so so determined, but sometimes it feels like one step forward two steps back.

Next year, I've decided since I'm going alllll the way to London I might hop on a train to Paris at the end of my trip and do the park that I missed out on last year.

It's beautiful :) I went there some years ago and it's the best park I've been to in my whole life.

There's a place in the park when you can drive cars around a circuit. Be aware and don't hit the cars whose drivers are kids.. Their fathers won't understand it was a mistake. Personal experience.

Intellectually, yes you generally know that. However, that's the kind of message that never gets passed on from the human part of the brain to the mammalian/reptillian part. Fear in that situation is a reflex action and not necessarily to do with clear thinking.

I meant there's a part of your brain wired in basically the same way as our reptillian ancestor's brains 150 million years ago was wired. They didn't have crash barriers 150 million years ago*.

    * - Or tyres, come to think of it...

  • Mr C20/04/2011 at 13:56

you can't. You have to apply where you reside. I was going to apply via NZ but I can't even do that even though I'm a citizen.

There's all sorts of crazy rules with Olympic football too like Under 24's only and only two capped players and this and that... it's all a bit confusing to me who they're allowed to actually pick for their teams.

And there's the whole Team GB football team argument that no football association seems to be able to agree on...

It can't be that effective if the only player who stands out from the last olympics when Argentina won was Lionel messi who was already regarded as the best player in the world anyways!

I just find the whole football competition a mess in the Olympics.

So every time I watch a T.V. I just look at it as being in heaven.

Football? Cup Final on a Wednesday, is that usual?

Erm yes. It's football, and as I said, the country where I live is a little bit strange hehehe.

And plus, there's an important part of the spanish population (the Catalan people) who would like to become a country (I am one of those :))

We are seven million people, and Barcelona is the biggest city of Catalonia, so don't be stranged if you are watching the match and you see Barça's fans whistling to the national anthem...

Fortune favours the brave, and all that :)

  • Kai20/04/2011 at 16:46

Fortune favours the brave, and all that :)

Well, moderately brave, maybe, to just be myself and not try to use a shoehorn to fit myself into a job. I'll create a job that fits me instead. I think this is why nothing came of alllll those applications I've sent out over the years. Now it makes perfect sense. The puzzle pieces seem to be coming together.

  • Kai20/04/2011 at 16:48

I just watched a very unnerving documentary on Frontline about aircraft maintenance in the US,

    http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/flying-cheaper/?utm_campaign=viewpage&utm_medium=grid&utm_source=grid&utm_nooveride=1

It was about finding maintenance places on the cheap, where they don't actually do the work and use parts that should be thrown out. US AIrways was one airline they mentioned by name using this place/these places.

They have original reporting, they source when they quote/repost and generaly have a pretty neutral reporting across quite a broad area.

Jobs doesnt like them because they killed 3Gs sales, after quite a big scoop.

I don't care what they write about Apple, I'd rather know the good and the bad. I don't like that their owner openly admits he will shell out cash for more clicks.

How much respect do they have of their peers?

    But whats wrong with that?

Do a google search, plenty of advertisers paying for clicks

Newspapers subsidized the cost of their papers for most of the 20th century.

news orgs all over the world will pay for photos or footage

    Is it that different?

MAKE offered us some TV-B-Gone clickers to bring to the show, we pretty much couldn't help ourselves. We shut off a TV. And then another. And then a wall of TVs. And we just couldn't stop. (And Panasonic, you're so lucky that 150-incher didn't have an active IR port.) It was too much fun, but watching this video, we realize it probably made some people's jobs harder, and I don't agree with that (Especially Motorola). We're sorry.

Ignorance is bliss.. I've managed to ignore the media circus. A lot of people wouldn't be so anti or ambivalent if the media wasn't so hyped up. I've noted the rampant commercialism though, some unintentionally funny bits of tat are appearing in local shops.

Yes, that's true. Apple computers are much safer than Windows ones, but, in case of people who doesn't have a job and whose economical situation is delicated, I don't see why they have to invest thousand dollars in buying Mac.

It's true those computers are safer, but they are very very very expensive.

Jusst been playing suzuka on the xbox,

it weill be interesting where they put the DRSZ there.

I guess the run down to 130r would be too dangerous, on the other hand turn 1 is so open then tight there could be accidents.

    will be a good one!

trying to think of other places which might have issues..

  • MartiV820/04/2011 at 18:35

it weill be interesting where they put the DRSZ there.

    It's difficult to guess...

I think it will be also interesting to know where is the DRS zone put in Monaco... Talking about the urban circuits, I guess in Valencia it will be in the straight were Webber crashed last year. And in Singapore... maybe in the straight before turn 7?

  • Eyeteaguy20/04/2011 at 18:36

I guess the tunnel into the chicane provides the best overtaking chance, but they will need the downforce maybe?

Going up the hill? but its very narrow still

  • MartiV820/04/2011 at 18:37

    Hello.

    Good evening :)

  • Eyeteaguy20/04/2011 at 18:37

DRS, do we really need it with the tyres doing their thing?

  • Eyeteaguy20/04/2011 at 18:38

I know Alonso does, otherwise Lewis will think he is sweet on him.

  • MartiV820/04/2011 at 18:39

I guess the tunnel into the chicane provides the best overtaking chance, but they will need the downforce maybe?

Yes, I had thought about it. It's true that the straight before the chicane is not a straight, it's a wide fast curve, so maybe they'll need some downforce there.

  • Eyeteaguy20/04/2011 at 18:40

Yes, I had thought about it. It's true that the straight before the chicane is not a straight, it's a wide fast curve, so maybe they'll need some downforce there.

Where were the guys using the f-duct last year, that would be a good indication.

  • Bassano20/04/2011 at 18:40

DRS, do we really need it with the tyres doing their thing?

Let's give it a few more races, I think it's a good stop gap until an overhaul of aero is achieved

  • MartiV820/04/2011 at 18:40

Where were the guys using the f-duct last year, that would be a good indication.

Let's try to find some on-board videos...

Your manager must get them from somewhere though? Do you have an in house payroll department in every store?? I presumed most companies had a central payroll. The slips for everyone that works on our site are posted in a big envelope that I can then hand out.

That's why Germany has got football right not wrong? No? Not so slavish to capital cities but much more about the fans?

That's why Germany has got football right not wrong? No? Not so slavish to capital cities but much more about the fans?

I am given to understand, rather than understanding directly, that Germany has a very high percentage of fan ownership of teams and - sure I may be being idealistic - but I think that sounds like a great thing

Can be both good and bad but at least you have the club at the heart than say a money grabbing chairman only there to make a quick million or whatever.

  • Steven Roy20/04/2011 at 21:08

Actually its rubbish, Wales doesn't have it either.

That's different. If Cardiff played in Wales they would be in the top league

Can be both good and bad but at least you have the club at the heart than say a money grabbing chairman only there to make a quick million or whatever.

I feel like the local fans should have more of a say... sure it's hard to compete with the huge payers... but a sport shouldn't have to rely on them. It should be self sustaining.
