Hi, I’m Gavin, otherwise known as RubberGoat, author of the F1 stats blog ‘Making Up The Numbers’ and I am here to welcome you to Wednesday – ’Hump Day’, the middle of the week. It’s all downhill from here, as they say.
Here’s some links for your reading and enjoyment:
- Mr. C. tweeted a link to an excellent story from RaceCar Engineering on How the F-Duct Works. If you want to really geek out on aerodynamics then take a look. But watch out, as it’s a bit of ‘here comes the science’!
- Jake Humphrey seems to be winning the ‘Volcanic Grand Prix’ – the race back to Europe from China, which is turning into some sort of internet version of ‘Around The World in 80 Days’. By the time you read this he will probably be back home in Norwich with his lovely wife, but check out his Twitter Account and some of the other journalists anyway as they have some interesting stories to tell.
- Lewis Hamilton has praised the stewards for their work this year, saying that “I think the FIA and their racing stewards this year, they've been the best that I've probably experienced in Formula 1.” After his antics in the last couple of races, I think he should be buying them beers!
- In non-F1 news, Jon wanted me to mention that it’s Queen Elizabeth’s actual birthday today (as opposed to her other official birthday later in the year). Why can’t we all have two birthdays?
- Finally, I would be remiss if I didn’t plug my Fantasy Racers post that I wrote last night, so make sure you take a look and let me know how your teams went and what your strategy is for the next race.
So that’s the daily then. I hope you liked what I had to offer - tomorrow it’s James who will be writing for you, which I am sure you are looking forward to as much as I am.
One final thought – we were discussing the Shuttle Landings in the comments yesterday afternoon and it got me thinking. Who would you like to see from F1 go into Space and why? I would like to see Jenson Button pilot the Space Shuttle – now that she is old, she needs the gentle touch of a driver who is known for looking after his machinery in order to reach the finish line.
hullo daily gavin!
A new day and a new daily :) yay!!
I don't want two birthdays... otherwise I'd be 42 now...;)
:D
This is a good point... how old is the queen now then, i assume she has only had 2 birthdays since she became queen?
looks like the 5live crew have just about made it home too.
Aye. Isn't the official birthday the anniversary of the coronation?
yay my parents are on their way! Except the airport website says they will land 20 minutes early which I have not factored into my schedule this morning.
I don't think so. The official one I think is the same for every monarch.
Have you factored in the time they'll take to disembark and collect their luggage
That's at least 20mins
Curious
The Queen's Official Birthday does not coincide with when she was born. Edward VII, who reigned from 1901 to 1910, and whose birthday was on 9 November, in autumn, moved the ceremony to summer in the hope of good weather
that I had already accounted for, I think this just means I have to get out of bed at some stage quite soon. #lazy
This is Amy who plans everything. She probably knows how many steps they will take from the plane to the exit and their average walking speed
i might cry, this history coursework is taking forever to finish..deadline is tomorrow at 4pm.. do you think i can miss a day of school to finish it rather than staying up all night and having about an hours sleep before school?.. :(
Perhaps you could text them some directions?
#superlazy
yup
But if I didn't meet people at the airport I wouldn't see Anando! Although I get the feeling he won't be there this time.
Either way, it doesn't sound like you'll be fit for much tomorrow :(
I dare you to try that. Ever.
If it was me I would work late & take the day off school
Take the day off!
The longer you leave it the more history there will be. Every day is another day in the history books.
most of my teachers or classmates are littered around the world anyway....
You told me you couldnt talk because you were going to sleep
#busted!
bingo
Good point
In that case tak the day off
We all know that I FAIL at sleeping...
Do they get an extended deadline then?
think i may do that.
(hearts spc for being nice)
i'm off again.. next time i comment i'll have finished this stupid thing with all the right references, and stupid pages of exam board forms
xxx
nope, the power of email ;)
What if they are stuck in china and cant upload large files like joe? :)
You mean like Lou is ;)
4 of the 6 people I was going to be living with next year have decided today that they just want to live on their own.
Lovely. thanks for that, and one day before the accomodation deadline too.
deadline is tomorrow... for next year's living arrangements??
What year are you in?
Is living off campus an option?
Surely people don't even know what uni they are going to next year yet
they're done in a big draw so its fair for all
?
going into second, im in halls now, so off campus was the only option anyway
People who will be in their first year next year
Don't people organise that themselves?
Must be heaps of private landlords out there
I'm going into my second, so all my accom is sorted now.
The vast majority is all done through the uni, it makes it fairer that way, and you have alot more come back than if you go private
I guess you'll have the opportunity to meet new people then
I didn't want to live with anyone else, we sorted this months ago.
anyway, sleep before my ARDS tomorrow, night
Night Jon
Good luck
Enjoy
I am going to be soo late #sorrymumanddad
Poor planning [tuts] ;)
The plane needs to slow down. One thing to know about me is I may plan everything but I am never on time, always super super early or about 10 minutes late
A for planning
D for execution
I think Amy's a delegator ;)
I wish I was a delegator, i'm more "if i do everything myself it all meets my standards." its why I can't play team sports ;)
Being on time isn't one of your measurements?
umm. what happened to christine's rankings this week?
Why are you asking us?
Surely you're closer to the answer than we are :)
because you're awake.
I think you probably shouldn't wake her up and ask her. That could cost you your brownie point
:)
That's a good point
I don't have the answer though
Wow, how did Mr C earn that?
also true.
Someone asked a question and he not only knew Christine had blogged about it but he produced a link faster than Christine. Well worth a brownie point
That deserves at least two points
and on that bombshell, i must sleep. night all.
Night Mr C
Hmm 7 minutes til the next airport bus then its a 20 min journey. Worst daughter ever! I hope their luggage takes forever to come out
G'night Sir
I will retire too. TV and sleeps I think
8 hour delivery window to be awake for tomorrow
Good night
I have been racking my brain on this for weeks.... How can McLaren's f-duct solution not be considered a "movable aerodynamic device" when the drivers leg is used to somehow-or-other divert airflow, while the Renault mass-damper was considered one?
No part of the device moves. All the driver is doing is sticking his leg into the airflow. No different to him sticking his hand out into the airstream
I appreciate the subtlety. So does that mean that I can install some sort of of device that sits in the engine exhaust flow and when the driver blocks an outlet it causes the device to spin and provide high pressure air to a secondary outlet?
How about letting teams use the drinks bottle to contain some sort of flammable high octane fluid that the driver can suck in to a tube and then blow out again, in to the engine air-box intake? (Didn't think of that one, Mr. Wirth?)
Finally, maybe teams can ***HIGHLY SUGGEST*** to certain drivers that they should alter their current speed in order to let their team-mate practice drafting and passing moves?
Interesting fact: Kimi Raikkonen has more points in WRC than Schumi has in F1... :D
thankfully my parents were the last off the plane, so I got there in time. Turns out my best friends parents were on the same plane so I had a chat to them too :D
Oh my word! I set off. Very tempted to go back inside. It is FREEZING!
clearly Nick not worth that much then eh ;)
#nothere
Wooooo for Amy's planning! Sadly i an less organised. I can already think of things i've forgotten. I can't in back now though or i'll miss the bus :(
It's very hard to see past the fact that it's 6am and my car doors are iced shut...
and I think crashmaster Sato has more in IRL than Kimi and Schumi combined :-)
Morning all.
Have you heard the story about the lost iPhone Prototype? http://gizmodo.com/5520438/how-apple-lost-the-next-iphone
Sounds like a lot of skullduggery to me. Why did they have to name and shame the guy who lost it?
Oh. I forgot.
because he duly deserved it ...
I disagree. If he was allowed to have the phone then he made an honest mistake. No need to out him so if he gets fired he can't get another job...
well it all depends on what damage he caused. when one is entrusted with a sensitive information or know how, one is also expected not to give it away. getting high on German brew is not an excuse....
But maybe he was field testing the phone. I mean, the only way to do that is to give it to the engineers to use?
I think the conduct of the person selling it to Gizmodo and their subsequent naming and shaming is far worse than losing the phone itself...
well, nobody would sell it to Gizmodo and Gizmodo would have nothing to publish if guy with phone kept an eye on it
yes, the only way to test the phone is to give it to engineers. but I believe Apple does not expect those engineers to get drunk and leave it in a pub for others to publish study dismantle copy ...
on the other hand, I also read some speculations that this all may have been carefully staged PR stunt by Appple. does not seem likely to me, but who knows ...
Morning all :)
Hello!
How are you Christine?
I'm quite excited I'm going to hand in my dissertation to a book binding place, although I won't get it back till tomorrow. Although a nasty cough and sore throat appears to be developing, boo.
Uh oh. Drink some magical orange juice, that always seems to work for me.
Oooh good idea. Any excuse for orange juice is a good excuse :)
Hi. I see many vapour trails. Hooray for planes!
Ooo I'm mentioned in the daily, although that picture on the wiki is rather old :D
hehe. delayed rankings?
the ipad prototype was bolted to a table in a guarded room. it's a hell of a leap from that to "letting one out walk off into a pub".
time will tell though.
Hehe - all the more reason to update it ;)
Maybe. Or double rankings next week.
Must say that is a good pic of you though!
Oooh we had Nachos for lunch in the canteen and I ate too much. And we had cake too!
What kind of cake?
Lemon cake and Dream cake (sponge with coconut treacle on top!)
Wow. I want cake.
shh. i'm the lazy type :p
i won't lie being given the ability to write posts on here scares me a little. i don't want to break anything.
joe is writing faster than i can read at the moment:
http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2010/04/21/her-majestys-press-coming-through/
http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2010/04/21/being-shanghai-e/
Always remember that you cannot break anything more than Mr C already has done!
#sorryeveryone
hehe :)
I like this quote:
By the way, for those who think that the Spanish GP may be affected by all this, fear not. The F1 freight is already in Bilboa in Spain and is being offloaded to trucks and will be taken by road to the team bases across Europe.
btw, is this sam michael?

ted news: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/8633980.stm
[Brawn] let slip one of the technical controversies of his time at Ferrari in the early 2000s: "In the past, we got the wing to stall by making it flex at high speeds."
wow!
There was a whole thing about it in '06
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/50192
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/52443
agreed. i had no idea they were stalling the wing though.
In fairness, there was not as much technical reporting in 2006 like there is now...
That's probably why I never really understood it when it was going on :)
Work all handed in to be binded, now we play the waiting game... *twiddles thumbs*
I do appreciate how the recommended book binding place in cardiff was not far from a Greggs. Excellent work from my uni.
How long?
Should be available to pick up tomorrow. Tomorrow is too long! I want it now so I can stare at it in happiness :)
google appears to have removed timesonline.co.uk from its main index. although articles are still showing on the news index: http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&tbo=p&tbs=nws:1&q=times+online&btnG=Search&meta=&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai=

Loved this. It seems Emirates have come out of this very well indeed, I just saw Noble's tweets linked at Autosport
http://twitter.com/noblef1
What will happen to times online then? Unless you have a subscription the enws on it will be completely inaccessible?
I love emirates. I only flew once with them and got upgraded on the return flight.
free at the moment, £1 a day from june or something like that. should be interesting to see if it works.
Depends on your definition of 'works' as well!
i guess "makes more money than they currently are", would be considered a success.
the times+ site is here: http://www.timesplus.co.uk/
Conveniently buries the £2 a week bit in the FAQs :)
it's a pound a day?
A digital subscription, giving you access to thetimes.co.uk and thesundaytimes.co.uk is £2 per week. You can also purchase a 24 hour pass for £1 giving you 24 hour access to both websites.
Team Penske has ride-height control
http://www.indystar.com/article/20100418/SPORTS0107/4180378/1217/SPORTS0107
for some reason when i typed it, my mind translated it to £1 per week.
i thought that sounded reasonable. one pound a day??
O.O
Rupert Murdoch is a greedy greedy man grr
not sure i've ever used the sunday times site. can't i just use the one for half price?
The only thing the Times has ever offered of interest to me is a couple of columnists, who I would have followed IF there had been a reasonable RSS feed.
As far as I could tell, you could only follow everything or nothing. Which sounds like it is the ethos for Mr Murdoch.
interesting they had these systems last year.
did newey copy indycar?
:)
All I ever bothered with was the odd Clarskon column. But I end up just buying the books anyway!
It's an interesting thought, not many would think to look at such a restricted series..
It's a cool idea because that series is so technically restricted...
Exactly that.
my mum cooked me dinner then folded my washing. I like having visitors.
Mums are quite awesome.
They got over you being late then
Afternoon folks
I got quite excited to see my best friend's mum at the airport too. Two mums in one day is a lot.
I was late to the airport and still had to wait 15 minutes for them. Last people off the plane!
You need to widen your margin of error ;)
#UnnecessaryPanic
After missing out on Alonso stalking when my brother was last off the plane, I'm starting to think it runs in the family.
Shall remember that for when you arrive in London :D
As things stand I will hopefully arrive long before you finish your shift ;)
I tend to be first off the plane, but I always seem to have the last suitcase that arrives on the baggage claim :(
Check in online, arrive at airport with bag later
Last on, first out
We got really lucky coming home from the UK - sat near the front of the plane, and our suitcases were first off so we managed to just catch the early train home ;)
being last on is too scary. Last time I left NZ my brother was driving and he got me to check in one minute before it closed and it took years off my life.
Might be worth you getting the tube 2 stops to my work, will obviously chat nearer the time
Luggage, I mean
isn't it odd that @rf1paddockpass's list of f1 key people consists of... just tony fernandes?
http://twitter.com/rf1paddockpass/key-people
Sounds good. We can look at it later on. I will buy my GA ticket this week!
Travel agent?
maybe they couldn't fit "key people if we get trapped in an ash cloud and need a friendly airline man to help"
:)
Next time someone offers me an 8 hour delivery window for a small envelope, I'm gonna give them a window on when to expect payment
"Next month, sometime"
was it an exciting envelope though?
Just you wait - there might be a Lotus-Renault deal in the offing. ;)
Hi all.
When it arrives it will be
Jònsi tickets
I could have paid six pounds to secure a time
9am-1pm or 1pm-5pm
Needless to say, I told them what to do with that!
Or I could have had it delivered to Lou or Lukeh, as long as they had my ID [facepalm]
that is absolutely ridiculous! I get really angry when I buy tickets to anything and they don't give me a pdf e-ticket option.
Apple have just secured a patent for iPhone ticketing
Scan the barcode on the screen
Great idea, just make sure your phone is charged :)
hey chap
how's things? :)
very, very good. did you have a good weekend?
Journeyer!
Are you still collating the montage music from the BBC shows?
http://tinypic.com/r/21nea9t/5
Hey Bassano. Yup, still am. :) I got the montage music on Sunday night, thanks to Lou and Lukeh. :D Take That is OK, but I've always loved Sledgehammer, even before this weekend. :)
I had it in my head ALL DAY yesterday.
I thought the Sledgehammer bit was a sample in the Wiley track
Indeed I did! :D About the only thing stopping it from being a perfect weekend is the missing Schumi autograph. ;)
The hairpin seat was worth its weight in GOLD - so much action! :)
Take That or Sledgehammer?
Yeah, great spot
That would've been quite a leap. :D Peter Gabriel has always rocked for me, though. :)
It was too wrong for the BBC to have mixed it
Must've been the commercial release
Sledgehammer. I don't know Take That enough for it to get stuck in my head, the only part I've ever heard was the bit on the F1 coverage.
I thought it was the BBC, they mixed two at the last race as well
And that was too much ;)
I wanna be... a Sledgehammer! :D
It's very interesting, though, how the BBC music selection this year is SO different to last year.
Sack the DJ
Have done it for every race this year bar Bahrain.
Preferred last year's TBH
At least it's not all Live Lounge songs this year!
I particularly enjoyed Monaco last year *runs*
Indeed. :) I'm with Bassano's - last year's is better as a whole compared to this year so far, but this year's has much more variety.
well I am surprisingly tired for 11pm, I shall hit the sack. G'night all :)
G'night Amy
Night Amy!
Night Amy
That's a fair point TBH.
Hmm I seem to have just written my daily post :D
Crikey!
meanie!
woot!
A new standard to reach, clearly :)
We rarely see a good Chinese GP so pleeeeeeease go every year :) I am now basing my view that the race was good because Journeyer was there
I though it was because Christine didn't watch it?
What if it has to be both?
Also Journeyer that must've meant you must've gotten the chance to see some of the various battles Schumacher had going into that corner, must've been good for you as a Schumi fan :)
Then this sport is becoming too superstitious in the requirements necessary for a good race ;)
I needed a break from uni stuff, so thought i'd write it. The rest just sort of happened! :D
Bittersweet is the perfect word. His defence against Lewis was EPIC, but seeing him get passed by car after car after car really hurt.
HAHA! :P Too funny. :D
Ahh, good point. I may have forgotten how slow his car seemed at times coming out of that corner...
And he seemed to be scrabbling for grip pretty often, too. :(
#sorryMrC
I wonder if his set-up is not to his [or his car's] liking, or if Nico is just faster these days
On the other hand, Petrov really impressed me. His moves on Schumacher, then Webber were quite exquisite.
When he stays on the track, he can be quite good
most of my teachers or classmates are littered around the world anyway.... {Comment #22}
One of my classmates was stuck in Las Vegas yesterday evening. Surprisingly, every other student and teacher for my classes has attended and none of the other people I know face-to-face have been directly affected.
He even did a twirly wirly on the track and got away with it
I suspect more of the latter. Even when the setup isn't so much to his liking, he usually finds a way to cope. But it just hasn't happened. Ted thinks he's still gonna win at least 1 race this year, but I suspect that it will have a bit of luck involved to ensure he stays ahead not only of Nico, but of the other Big 4 teams.
Indeed so. :)
I think it was in the Ted article Mr C linked earlier, MercGP have their weight bias too far rearward and can't move it far enough. And when they move it as far as they can it kills the front tyres.
Is it me, or is Ferrari's insistance that there is no bad feeling between their driver's, protesting a little too much
If it's a non-story, just ignore it
'ello everyone... So we didn't make it out of the country either... While that's bad news I think that does mean that we will have a radio show this week... Almost as good as an 8 day holiday right?
#keepingpositive :)
More Giggles Radio, w00t!
Any birthday plans now Alex?
Hooray! :D
Oh, and hi Alex :D
You're not the only one who's said that.
How could Felipe not be peeved by Alonso's pitlane entrance move?
Aha an If-By-Whiskey argument :)
Did she consult the wiki for the folding?
because he screwed up. he can only be mad at himself, no?
ahh shoot. yay for more radio though :)
or Felipe could actually be peeved, but has the good sense not to wash his dirty linen in public...
again. peeved at himself.
hmmm... i don't think so, TBH. i just don't see why he would be. what else could he have done to prevent a pass from Alonso?
We are now going away just for the night itself to a friend who runs a pub / hotel / restaurant out of London.
Boo for no holiday, will you still have time off?
closed the door. he wasn't expecting it, he made it way too easy.
it's kinda like kubs queue jumping in malaysia. i commend thinking outside the box. (and snigger at felipe)
No I'm at work... am hoping to move the holiday
you're moving naples?
Ooops didn't explain myself. An If-By-Whiskey argument is one where you suspect the other person of putting themselves in a position where they are redefining what they are talking about as they are going along...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/If-by-whiskey
:)
I meant... move the holiday dates :)
Ah I see, good plan
Well, that'll be nice
wow. that's a long way out of london.
I thought he went wide cos Alondo ducked in front of him
I'll have to watch that bit again
yes. he LET alonso duck in front of him.
That is true, keep it behind closed doors
Ferrari are trying to blow the cover story though
:)
daily post submitted Christine. :)
#hidesfromMrC
It's a harsh move on a team mate who then has to queue behind you
Still, that's a champions mentality
of course. but that is racing.
Indeed
Was fun to watch
indeed. i think people are on the wrong lines re: the feud though. massa got taught a lesson. no wonder he's keeping quiet.
Is it me, or is Ferrari's insistance that there is no bad feeling between their driver's, protesting a little too much {Comment #217}
If Fernando does anything like it again, I think he'll be paid back with interest because of this rather overt ignoring of this incident. It sounds like "we'll forgive you this once but you'd better not do it again or else..."
I have a feeling he'll do it at any opportunity
Don't trust Alonso :D
rubbish
no. the line is around the corner, and you race UP TO THE LINE.
Does anyone have news on how Ferrari is getting back to Europe?
Speaking of which, any news on Massa's 2011 status? Is he still contracted to Ferrari? I wonder if Fernando would rather have good pal Kubica in the other car...
The only Ferrari related news apart ffrom the non-feud that I've seen are about LDM stepping down at Fiat
joe had some thoughts on the podcast. nothing confirmed yet.
"Under negotiation"
Don't expect any news soon [Maybe Monza]
My dad claims he just saw a truck in the northern part of Singapore carrying a Ferrari F1 car. It looks like the real thing - with Santander stickers and tire warmers at all. Which begs the question...
WHAT THE HELL ARE THEY DOING HERE?
closed the door. he wasn't expecting it, he made it way too easy. {Comment #233}
If Felipe had closed the door, there would have been a crash, 2 Ferraris limping down the pit lane and both drivers would have been screamed at in the debrief. As it stands, Massa comes out of this looking like a bloke with sense and Fernando looks like he could be a liability. In other words, the perfect set-up for a repeat of 2007's fall-out between team and driver.
If it's anything like 2007, Felipe will know the smart move will be to keep his head down because that means he can do a Hamilton and provide his team with a focus point if/when the Alonso/Ferrari dynamic falls over. Admittedly the relationship hasn't fallen over yet but it is starting to wobble.
Waiting for services to resume as normal
As far as I know, nearly ALL the equipment is still in Asia
yeah, if he closed it ON him. he should've closed it waaaaay in advance of that!
Indeed. More than a few decided to go home via KL or Singapore.
But still, in an open air truck, where people are gawking at it, in northern singapore where there are only housing estates? WTH?
good point.
rubbish {Comment #253}
How so? The explanation fits the evidence and Massa's not the type to keel over just because he has an aggressive team-mate - Sauber in 2005 demonstrates that.
Clearly, Ferrari has lost its bearings completely without Jean Todt at helm.
Probably a demo car to promote the SGP
mass screwed up his pit entry, by being asleep. he allowed another driver to get the jump on him.
he comes out of it looking like a lemon.
yeah, if he closed it ON him. he should've closed it waaaaay in advance of that! {Comment #263}
Which would have been no help whatsoever because the pit lane was wide enough for two abreast up to that corner. It was close the door at the corner or not at all.
Why would demo cars need tire warmers?
I saw an F1 Ferrari in London on a flat bed truck on the way to Heathrow
Cheap advertising?
tyre warmers during transit? almost certainly not this year's car.
Joe said the team stuff is in Bilbao
if he took the inside line... where exactly would alonso have gone?
I don't think the previous year's car had the white Santander sticker.
so that it doesn't crash on cold tyres.
they repaint them
mass screwed up his pit entry, by being asleep. he allowed another driver to get the jump on him.
he comes out of it looking like a lemon. {Comment #270}
He wasn't asleep, he slipped up on a puddle a bit. The only reason Alonso "got the jump" on him, despite that slip, was because Felipe was alert enough to work out a crash was imminent and acted to avoid it. If anything he was paying more attention than Fernando at that stage, which is why he comes out of it looking better than Fernando.
If it's a demo, it'll run today's livery
... I still don't get it. Wouldn't it be better off in a display case in the city where the circuit and people are? Instead of a housing estate?
hehehehe. yeah, that sounds like massa.
indeed. might be the F60 in F10 colours: http://vivacity.pe/deporte/files/2010/01/ferrari-marlboro-santander.jpg
if he took the inside line... where exactly would alonso have gone? {Comment #276}
The same place as he did in the race.
It would only need them for two reasons:
1 - they're about to run the car
or 2 - decoration
If it was on a truck, I'd say it was in transit
BTW agreed. Apparantly, Felipe also told the team through the radio to get the tires ready for Alonso. Instead of swearing. ;)
are we talking about the same pitlane entrance in china here?
Pushovers don't win championships
If Massa ever does win, they'd be morally obliged to give 60% of it to Rob ;)
The airport to the city takes 15-25 minutes. The airport to Ang Mo Kio (the housing estate) takes the same time. Plus the storage places are all south too.
Can I just say, Tilke may have many shortcomings, but that China pitlane entry is genius. Pure genius.
seconded
:)
Luck, I'm guessing
Completely agree. With the accompanying gravel trap.
:D I wonder if Lewis and Felipe would agree. ;)
Who was it that said before that, "why is there a gravel trap at pit entry? it makes no sense!"
:D
That'd be 'bad luck' then :)
Not to mention it's the most difficult pit entry to get right in the F1 games. :)
are we talking about the same pitlane entrance in china here? {Comment #289}
Yes (in theory)!
Tosh. It makes complete sense. Just requires more skill, is all. :P
it's for a different circuit layout.
in that case, i completely disagree with your assessment of the situation.
Pushovers don't win championships
seconded {Comment #294}
Thirded ;)
PING! I have been writing an odd but fun f1 blog post :) http://gridwalktalk.wordpress.com/2010/04/21/what-if-formula-1-was-a-soap-opera/
Did you get your dissertation bound?
in that case, i completely disagree with your assessment of the situation. {Comment #205}
The disagreement is mutual. Which I think everyone else on the blog has worked out, so there probably isn't much point either of us pursuing this further right now...
Yup, am going to lick it up tomorrow
Urm... pick it up.
That's not a good typo.
Will it be covered in chocolate sauce?
Did you get your dissertation bound?
Yup {Comment #310}
Good news :)

Afternoon folks.
howdy sir
Hi RG. Are you doing the quiz tonight?
Yegads! The quiz!
Hmmm... Should I do it?
Yep :)
Arrrrrrrrrrrrggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!
That is all
Erm hi?
Afternoon Alison. You ok?
Hi Alison
I've been dealing with imbeciles today, how's your day been? :)
I'm okay. I'm turned around and heading back north again. Nick's managed to get a flight tonight :)
Wow, that's good
[for him, for you: not so much :(]
Never, ever arrange a delivery by the DX group
I've seen toddlers with better project management skills
Yeah, it's okay though. I just want his awful housing mess to get sorted... I made him call them back, he wasn't going to take it.
I am passed amazed at his decision making process
Yeah, i suspect he may have felt more than a little guilty though...
It does kind of turn out he was right though, a lot of fuss over some hot air!
Hold the front page
Nick accused of being right ;)
Don't tell him though!? I'll never hear the end of it...

Website Phones 4u surveyed 1500 women and found 54 per cent of women would be more likely to date a man if he owns an iPhone, presumably regardless of looks.
What they don't say is that men are less likey to date women with the lack of sense to shop at Phones 4u
Is that just saying women like rich men?
Apparently, iPhone users are seen as successful
So are drug dealers, in that context
Happy days :) my phone's so chunky, it hardly goes in my pocket. I really don't think i'm a phone snob...

Is good news though. Zipcar was great in town, Street Car excelled in the suburbs
Exactly... And zipcar always seemed like a company that was going places.

not sure it's tax free, but miles better than the uk, i believe.

Hi TM
howdy bassano
Since when did they make so many announcements on trains??
Dear Nick, please be on a train right now. Kthxby
It's annoying isn't it and rather discriminatory to deaf people
He's whining on about what sorts of tickets are valid. Problem is, the train has left and doesn't stop for 2 hours. I just want to shout 'what does it matter' at the speakers...
iPod & Headphones
It's too loud!! I have headphones in, i can still hear him listing every overpriced item available in the shop...
Darren Heath's China pics are up

I have a very worried feeling that Nick hasn't left in time to get to the airport. I can't stress how angry i'd be if he missed this flight...
Well first they've got to tell you where you're going.
Then they've got to tell where they'll stop on the way.
Then the guard will say he's coming through.
Then the buffet shop steward will tempt you with tea and coffee. Overpriced but often necessary, despite needing you to take your bags with you because you can't leave them unattended (they'll say that too if you're near London).
Then at every station they'll tell you you're near a station, that you're at a station, and that you're leaving the station and where you're going next.
At some stage you'll probably stop in the middle of nowhere for no apparent reason.
#YeHaveLittleFaith
What time's your flight?

Little heads up, Viva F1 quiz in 24 minutes, as hosted by me. Riiiiight, here
Crofty is hosting his Radio London show tonight and James Roberts of F1 Racing will be on in 10 mins to discuss F1 and travel..
http://www.bbc.co.uk/london/programmes go to the Listen Live thing if you're in the UK
In fact he's talking to a team person now
who is it?
Force India
ahh, andy.
He reckoned the cars were leaving Shanghai tomorrow, but Crofty thought some teams including Hispania had their cars in Spain already.
Trucks need to leave FIF1 HQ a week on Monday to get to Barcelona on time, that's the cutoff.
evening

hey mate.
oooo...
They are talking about M on the Bund....
Great restaurant...
Hi
does david croft always have a wednesday night radio show?
It seems to be fairly regular, I keep forgetting it though, and I think he talks about football a lot
he's talking to james now right?
Yeah
ahh, yes. i missed the introduction, but he just got an f1 racing plug in :)

She loves you really. I just get frowned at. :P
:D
I see you are retweeting the F1 Racing mag...
The Max thing was pretty funny and after scouring the mag I did find a mention of Kimi...
Soon there won't be and I'll stop my subscription....

He hasn't quite got the hang of replying though.. that's twice he's replied without a mention, to Mr C and to Lou..
To be fair a magazine about F1 can't really give much coverage on an WRC driver
you have it already?
true story!
No idea with general subscriptions but f1 subscriptions seem to always come a few days before they're in the shops
*f1 racing, even
i've stopped work for this evening so can now say hey to everyone properly :P
A secret for you.. the first time Christine said my name on a debrief (regarding a comment on itunes i think) you both may have got an eeek from me..then i turned up in the comments... but i don't generally eeek at my friends.. that would be odd.
:)

The general idea as far as I can see is that rally enthusiasts buy Autosport (which is by the same company, so it gets the sales either way).
Motorsport News is more geared to rally people I think, they cover a lot of national rally stuff as well.
Mind you, its been a while since I bought a copy
Hello properly
Motorsport News is more geared to rally people I think, they cover a lot of national rally stuff as well. {Comment #461}
Ah, but I believe Motorsport News is a different company these days ;)
Heyyy lou
i was ill, standing up... and trying to figure out what the equivalent of tab enter was on a mac... it's just a habit now.. non of this clicking 'post comment' business.
oh and i had to dear with the mouse!...
you giggling over my shoulder didn't help! :P although we do have a tendency to break computers and screens in london...
eeeekk!
see mr c... it's odd! :P
To be fair, i give you sympathy with that, for that mouse is not magic.
It is a Stupid Mouse.
I feel honoured to be amongst the ranks of Darren Heath and Mrs C.
Errr... not too sure about the "as well" stuff but I'll check it out....
Ah is it? Had no idea
noted
also, John Button.
:)
he replied again! :D do you think if i continue chatting to him like this till spa when i meet him he'll remember me?..(aim of spa = meeting lots of photographers and saying hi)
... and Jenson... but shhhhhh
Have you looked at the number of rally pages verses F1 in Autosport lately... it's pathetic... the same is true of the website... that's a disgrace.... even with a rally on last weekend the coverage was less than for NASCAR....
I am a subscriber of that too and they are getting to be on borrowed time ....
yes
lou.... how did you spot darren in this pic?!?!?

I'll release it out to the world in about 5 minutes
thats because....
only joking. i'm the stalker woman tbh
Aww, Lou's not a stalker. She's just taking an interest ;)
:)
Yeah but we usually wait until people have sent their results in, I think there was an occasion when it was released here when we were still guessing.. :)
Hey!! No... I suppose that's fair.
:D
oh and thanks for alerting me to the JB bbc story mr c :) scary thing is i got a text from my friend today saying whether i would mind not going to cornwall for a week in the summer and going to guernsey instead... it's not going to help me defend the stalker image i'm developing.
going to cornwall? so are we, in september
cause it's our big 'epic' summer, a group of us wanted to go on a holiday etc. We were going to go to Cornwall, or Devon or somewhere around there... but they were apparently chatting today and realised that guernsey would be an awesome place to check out too..
not it turns out JB is moving there...
i want it known that i'm not planning this trip. :)
hehehe Leo pronouncing German words is funny :)
i once did a holiday with friends.
20 years later, i haven't repeated the experience
:D aahh. it's the same group that usually go on holiday together, we've been on school trips to greece, france, cambridge, and wales and not fallen out yet. It will be an experience though :)
Me too!
it's not that i don't like my friends, it's just, that i like my own space more. much more.
ahhh it's only for about 4 days though.. and it's just after goodwood so i'll probably still be very happy :)
I don't know much about Leo... so why wont apple sell him an ipad?..
ah thankyou for mentioning goodwood, which would be the best day to go? because me and a mate are looking at going for a day.
Sunday if you want just one day.
Although all of the days is better. ;)
oo!! (hearts) goodwood talk. If you're just going to go for one day i'd wait till the driver lists come out (about a month before the event).. but usually most of the f1 drivers are there on the Sunday (which means it's very busy). Sometimes the drivers turn up all 3 days.. but i'd say Sunday.
Spot the difference by the way: http://tinyurl.com/2dwhd3g
Sunday it is then

yay!! i have 4 already! :D

I am watching Leo open mouthed at how awesome the ipad looks.
mmmmm
i saw something the other day where a photographer was talking about how they are planning to use theirs.. and it just seems perfect. If i had one i would totally have taken it to uni interviews etc, as well as having prints because the definition just looks so beautiful! plus it's light! :)

Nice day? :)
Woo, hey Alison
Erm if you were a train enthusiast it would be..... In a normal person's world, not so much!!
:(
It's okay. Nick's sat on a plane that's about to take off. That's the main thing.
Reet, bed. Night all and lotsa love.
Ooooh taxiing now.... The internet can tell you a lot of stuff. It scares me sometimes!
aw annoying for you though?
watching leo.
i need an ipad, i need an ipad, i need an ipad, i need an ipad, i need an ipad, i need an ipad, i need an ipad, i need an ipad, i need an ipad, i need an ipad, i need an ipad, i need an ipad, i need an ipad, i need an ipad........
must.win.lottery.
Leo loves everything. Don't be sucked in.
(I need an ipad first)
Get in line you lot!
he showed some photos on one... it..looked...so...awesome!!
you'll probably get one before me anyway ;)
I doubt it. I was all ready to get me an iphone, and then 3 bills turned up.
Stupid car insurance
No ipads for me here. Nick sent me a new book about a dragon. I'm sure I can be contented with that :D
You will get me in trouble Lou.
*now watching Leo at work*
There's a line already? :D
he's playing with what looks like a really dull game atm so i'm not really paying attention to this bit tbh.
Yeah that's a bit annoying.
Do something interesting Leo!!!!
I think it might have been a mistake to download the TWiT app
There's a TWIT app?
aww, has he stopped playing?
Yes just as I started watching :-(
:(
Evening all. Having a nice day?
load live.twit.tv on your iphone and theres a link. or just search itunes i guess.
live video or sound and a calendar
I think i almost want that case as much as the ipad... is that wrong?
i didn't see it. but almost certainly, yes.
Jeremy, as sidepodapplerep, will you be getting eval ipads for everyone? :D
hey Andy, it's not been the best. Went to the doctors this evening and he says i'm close to developing a bad chest infection (left over from the flu i had).. but other than that i'm okay :) how was your day?
Nick is finally in the air :D
i'll do my best. Still a mushroom at this stage. Happy to get discounts for everyone if possible
it's beautiful... it has a built in stand, and everything! :D i'll take the ipad first though ;)
oooooo
*starts saving*
Leo is about to explain the Jason Calacanis thingy
Very interesting
You too eh? Did I mention I am now a Genius, Jeremy?
what happened? Leo suddenly isnt there! Did Jason pull the plug? :P
"[jason's] shows are crappy"
tricaster reboot.
Thats awesome Andy!
Not sounding so friendly now
Goooooooooooooood evening :D
That's not so good Lou. Hope you are feeling better soon.
My day was pretty good, another spent in London.
i always thought you were?
Oh dear. No-one should be that cheerful, ever.
have you finished all the stuff in London yet?
I always was a genius, now I am a Genius :D
Next level, Jenius?
Not yet.
ahhh hehe
This Leo thing feels a bit like dirty laundry. I want to hear it, but Leo did give him permission on one of his shows
I thought at the time he was being too nice about it
one show.
not a network.
That would be a World Champion level. ;)
hehehehe :D
"jason would like to be a part of twit"
nail, head, smack. that's it in one. he wants in on leo's profit.
Yep, I think that's what Jason does
i hadn't considered this, but leo being open about the amount of money he was making, was a bad idea.
it attracted calicanis like a magnet.
I thought Leo understood that on the show where he gave permission. I'm not saying Jason isnt a sleazebag, but it sounded to me like he checked with Leo first before buying the 'thisweekin' domain and so on.
I'm really tired but I'm not sleepy if that makes any sense.... I'm really not sure what I do about it :(
so Leo is happy with a 'good' amount of money, Jason wants mega mega bucks? Isn't Jason already doing quite well?
i get that, but i can see the endgame in jason's mind is to muscle in on leo's business. leo wasn't intesrted so now jason is trying to force the situation, by stealing advertisers.
It is very interesting, in hindsight.
agreed and i have no idea.
That's not relevant to people who just care about money. If it's possible to have more, they'll do it, doesn't matter if they have enough already or not....
I've had an amazini day (apart from the rrrrrruubbbiiish middle bit which we dont talk about). Cheerful = epic
worse though, is that Jason just jumps in, grabs profit, and leaves. I don't think he's interested in developing anything
true enough.
Evening all
not anything of quality, anyhow.
#blamenick
He's busy flying away from blame as we speak....
Not anything at all as far as I can tell, where I think TWiT is all Leo wants to do.
It's sad because from what I can see, Leo has always tried to help any podcaster that asks
At least that will help you to decide whether or not to go to London
Errrr yeah that would be true if I hadn't already gone. I spent a very merry day getting well acquainted with the West Coast line.... That's 18 hours I'll never get back! :)
hey steven
agreed.
And he still ran away. Must think you are a bunny boiler
What's the latest on the Calacanis thing. I haven't seen anything all day
Did you have a fun day off school?
Yes. That is clearly the only explanation.
no. i spent it working and then at the doctors... got it all my work done, and now have medicine though, so my day tomorrow at school can be used productively on my f1 textile work. did you have a good day?
leo promised never to mention it again because jason is using it for link bait.
and then talked about it :)
:)
I had a fairly good day although this is the first time I have been on the net all day which is weird
That figures. I still think Leo should drop him from his network because all Calacanis is doing is using Twit for self promotion
Somehow I managed to miss the masterchef final so I'm watching it now.
I was talking back to the podcast (as you do) telling Leo that he should have said no to Jason because straight away I could see what Jason was getting at. I guess Leo feels he doesn't own the 'this week in' (as he said many times) and knew Jason would do it anyway, permission or not
wow, then you wouldn't have seen Lukeh's various plugs for his new awesome blog post..

:D I saw some of it. I have the last 2 episodes to watch. Luckily I have them on my computer.
