Hello! Welcome to Thursday, that dreaded day of the week, and the day I, James, have the pleasure of writing the daily post. A random fact for you all; I was born on a Thursday and according to the popular nursery rhyme 'Monday's Child' those born on this day have far to go, where exactly is anyone’s guess.

I admit I have no idea what is going on in the world of Formula One and I don't really want to at the moment and this daily post will reflect that:

  • Gizmodo posted a visual representation showing the number (approximately) of servers major tech companies own. Intel have an estimated 100,000 servers while Facebook, AT&T, and Time Warner Cable have in the region of 20,000 to 30,000. You may think this is a lot but Google are estimated to have over 1,000,000 servers, which is believed to account for more than 2% of the servers in the world! Microsoft, Yahoo, and Amazon are not represented so its not known how they shape up in comparison.
  • A couple of days ago Facebook turned off the lite version of the social networking site. They haven't revealed the reason for why but have said that they have learned a lot from having a slimmed-down version of the site. I am a little disappointed at this because it removed all those annoying apps but then I didn't use it that much.
  • If you find yourself with nothing to do this Thursday, and to try to involve F1 at least once: try finding a caption for this picture tag your comments with #caption so we can all enjoy!

That is it for my daily post, tomorrow’s post will be written by Lukeh which I'm sure will be fantastic. So I hope you all have good day and to steal Christine's line, I shall see you in the comments!.

    Point 4;

Jon passed his ARDS today :D

    Congrats Jon.

So, when is your first paid drive? LMS?

  • Steven Roy21/04/2010 at 23:14

Do you go straight to National B when you pass your ARDS? When I had a licence it was a National C but there was no test then

  • Jon 'National B' Waldock21/04/2010 at 23:15

So, when is your first paid drive? LMS?

I think I'll start low, maybe with some P1 races and then work my way into the lofty heights of the Clio Cup. don't want to go too fast too soon ;)

  • Jon 'National B' Waldock21/04/2010 at 23:15

Yup, a nat C is probably equivalent to a current non-race national b which you need for speed events, requires no test

  • Steven Roy21/04/2010 at 23:17

I guess they view the ARDS training and test as being the equivalent of the 6 signatures that you needed to upgrade before. When are you planning to race?

  • me21/04/2010 at 23:19

hehe, i approve of the non-f1 daily post :)

That sounds about right, to be honest the test wasn't that hard and its almost a little scary that after less than 10 laps of Thruxton i can now race on any uk circuit, its odd.

I'm going to hold off sending my application this year and use it for 2011 (really not worth £50 medical and £50 licence fee at the moment) but use this year and the resources around me to have a punt at something. The answer being, we'll see!

I'm hoping that one of the new single seater series would be silly kind enough to let me review one of their cars as an addition to the Go Motorsport series, but we shall see

That's all? Mind you before you only had to pass the medical so at least you have some training. I did 4 days of race school and it is great value for money. Makes you a lot faster and a lot safer and you are not picking up the repair bills for your learning but it is expensive.

Nice thinking. The first time I went to a racing school for a 10 lap sampler there was a journalist there who wrote for one of the main Scottish papers. She was supposed to be getting the same as me but she kept asking questions and posing for her photographer so she ended up with three times as many laps and ten times as much time as the rest of us. And no doubt didn't pay a penny for it.

It's very odd, they strongly advise you to get some track experience before racing though, track days etc etc, just to give you confidence but my instructor asked if i was planning on taking it up competitively which i found amusing but encouraging,

  • paul21/04/2010 at 23:38

Sounds like you did OK. Definitely worth getting some non-competitive track time just to settle into it. I twice did a full day test a couple of days before a race and the difference was incredible. If I had done my first race without the test day even though I had done the race school I would have been nowhere because all I would have done was 8-10 laps in practise. Mind you I may not have had as much confidence and not crashed as a result

Testing before the weekend is a must, pre season too. I got an offer to do Formula Ford this year and that included 6 pre-season tests because its all so important!

It takes a lot to learn a new track. It's fine for Lewis Hamilton with 20 years experience to turn up somewhere he has never seen and be right on it inside ten laps but when you have no experience it takes a lot longer. You also need somene with a lot of knowledge to run your car. You don't want to spend all day trying to find the right gear ratios and spring settings

  • Jon 'National B' Waldock21/04/2010 at 23:46

It's an average team with a couple of 2 year old cars, but still quite reasonable for what is was. I think it was including pretty much all costs, even entry etc.

That's good value. It's also ideal because they have two year's data and know exactly what the car is capable of so you can measure yourself. Magicking up £35k is a different matter though

Exactly, you won't be winning or anything even close, but if you want learning experiences in a decent championship its great.

For easily under a 5th of the money you could do a season in Formula Vee with a top team and learn just as much. it's all about the championship status! UK Legends are pretty awesome too, i'd like a go in one of those

They race them at Knockhill and I know there is someone who not only runs a Legends experience but will let you hire one to race. Just too tempting

    ooh very much so.

at the autosport show a couple of years ago, i met a guy who hired them for a year for £250 and you got free entry into any oval round of their championship (there was about 30 rounds to choose from) and all you had to do was return the car in the standard that it was in when you got it.

awesome deal, we very nearly went to test one but it fell through but i cant remember why

  • Jon 'National B' Waldock22/04/2010 at 00:00

I am not sure how much Formula Vee gets raced here nowdays

Even here it's not very well known, it really should be though, it would be such a great step for a driver with less money to get some really good experience.

Problem is, if you're struggling for money going into cars, unless you're winning big championships straight away, it can be hard to keep up the money to go higher

  • Steven Roy22/04/2010 at 00:00

I think the 750MC run a championship but it is just at club level. It never really took off here. It was big for a couple of seasons but like the others like Formula Talbot it just fizzled out

Returning it to standard could be really expensive and race car insurance is not only insane but generally only covers new parts but not labour.

I have never seen Legends on an oval but there has to be some contact there. I dread to think how much it costs to hire a car these days. I paid a lot more than that to hire a Fromula Ford from the racing school I went to for a one day test and a race and that was 20 odd years ago. I think I was paying £200 insurance with £200 excess on top of the hire fee

Base rate for a supported day of FFord testing is around £1100-£1500 + test fee+ VAT . you'd get the car run, a set of used tyres and a set of new plus fuel etc

    depends between teams of course

Again less than I was expecting. I think I was paying around £1000 for the weekend and no new tyres. New tyres would have been wasted on me anyway. Of course then FFord ran treaded tyres

Just dropping in for a second. For any Doctor Who fans, the new "Dalek Storm" was out in power in Sheffield for some BBC Radio thing.

I think this particular model should be on at some stage during the year.

I don't see the point in closing it down, it had some things that didn't work but in general it was a far less cluttered and busy alternative to a laying lacking in proper thinking and just too cluttered. I would blog about it but I've already ranted about Facebook recently, a man has his limits :)

    Very simply it's this:

    Apps make Facebook money.

I read somewhere that Facebook take a cut of the money you invest in the PointlessVille apps and it's worth millions. Why bother supporting a way to view the site that diverts access from this revenue stream?

Also, have you considered FB for iPod? It's quite a nice app...

  • RubberGoat22/04/2010 at 08:04

    Question about Facebook:

How do I find out who interacts with my profile the most? Is there a site with stats and stuff?

  • Lukeh22/04/2010 at 08:04

Booooooooooooooooooo for facebook apps. Worst thing that ever happened to the site.

I use the ipod app because as you say it's very clean and efficent.

    http://blog.facebook.com/blog.php?post=382978412130

    How is it worse?

All I want is my profile to just say the basics. I don't need it linking off to every direction under the sun and filling up my profile page with links and 'connections'. Facebook seem insistent on making the site more complicated to use. sure it's a social networking site but do we really need to have our name associated with every single thing we link or are connected to?

I'll give you an example of how frustrating it can be to use now. When facebook first started up a friend of mine from school was perfectly fine with it, but now can't actually use the website because of how complex it has become regarding text and the general layout. I recommended Facebook Lite to her a few months ago and it helped tremendously and now obviously she's back to square one with another update coming to further complicate the use of even her profile, let along anything else.

Just for clarity the first time she used it was about 5 years ago, when I was finishing school.

Fair enough. I am sick of how complicated it has become, but I also think I have too many Facebook friends. Maybe it might be better if I was connected to people via my interests rather than be friends with people I don't know, have never met and yet like something I like?

I can understand why, it is a mess with no solution to clean it up. With my friend's case she has quite a serious case of dyslexia, it has a name for it but I can't remember what it is right now, but that goes onto my next point as to how inaccessible it is for special needs especially considering I've spent the last 5 months or so studying programs/computing and their accessibility

I like to think I am quite savvy with web things, but I can't use it. Facebook just doesn't make sense to me.

I am at a quandry. I have 300 friends, which is a potential 300 people whom I can share links and my blog posts with. But that isn't what Facebook is for, so why should I receive updates from people I don't even know? I keep missing important stuff from friends and family, even using lists and stuff...

(I don't mean anyone from here BTW...)

I am extremely thankful that I have never liked Facebook in the first place. Felt it was far too gimmicky and had too many frills.

Pretty good for a Guide Dog raffle.

2nd prize is £1500, 3rd prize is £600, or you might get one of 20 luxury food hampers.

I'd imagine the chances of winning are fairly low, but better than the lottery..

  • Alianora La Canta22/04/2010 at 11:20

    Very simply it's this:

    Apps make Facebook money.

    I read somewhere that Facebook take a cut of the money you invest in the PointlessVille apps and it's worth millions. Why bother supporting a way to view the site that diverts access from this revenue stream? {Comment #64}

It wouldn't be so bad but the point when apps start getting seriously monetized is usually when they become completely unreliable on my computer. I haven't played FarmVille for months because of it (and I'm starting to worry that Bejeweled Blitz is going the same way - luckily I have a version of Bejeweled on my PDA...)

  • Alianora La Canta22/04/2010 at 11:28

    I like to think I am quite savvy with web things, but I can't use it. Facebook just doesn't make sense to me {Comment #74}

The daft thing is I can use Facebook... ...but that's because I quickly decided it was no use as a social networking program and focused on using it as a free gaming platform. I doubt this is what the makers intended.

Definitely. Although I agree with the quote in f1 Racing

"Incompetence? absolutely. Fraud? No. They were driven by desperation, not criminal intent"

Sadly desperation became a forefront over common sense.

you log when stuff happens on a tape. so on tape 1, at 15:02 alonso walked out of the motorhome an into the garage. you just have to know where everything is, when ted asks for it.

And if you don't get it for Ted then all hell breaks loose and the ground opens up

  • Alex Andronov22/04/2010 at 14:00

Just to answer the questions from earlier before my meeting.. There is no way it's a two parter... This is the shortlist not the list for the radio show. Essentially my process is:

    1) Create an empty playlist

    2) Scroll through songs ordered by letter adding any possible songs to the playlist

    3) Buy or source any songs that I don't have but want and add to the playlist

    4) This creates the shortlist. I then tend to turn Scrobbler off so nobody can tell what's coming

    5) Play the shortlist again and again deleting songs that I don't like or want

    6) Hope that I whittle the shortlist down to something lower than 2 hours so I can fit in some talking.

In the early days of the show I was doing about 1.6 hours of music. 0.4 of talking. I went down to about 1.2 hours of music 0.8 of talking... And then last week I did 1.8 hours of music 0.8 of talking... hence the overrun!

Basically that shortlist number is interesting to me because it tells me how much choice there is.

On some letters I've ended up with a shortlist of an hour and had to really struggle to find more choice music. You always want to have more so you can whittle.`

  • Amy22/04/2010 at 14:00

Thing is, Mercedes seem to be bringing the car to him more with the Barca updates. We'll see how effective that is.

But ultimately, even with a car not suited to him in the past, Schumi made it work (think 1996 and 2005). Why isn't it happening now?

True. I think we all know this isn't Schumi at the peak of his powers. Not even close. I am tempted to think that his decision to un-retire was more emotional than logical, given my previous post on the subject.

Looks like Max's senility is progressing fast. We never did favour Ferrari. Course not Max. There never was a veto on other teams' technology. No driver ever was penalised for aerodynamically blocking another. Mass dampers were never banned on entirely specious grounds. Michelin didn't have to re-design their tyres at zero notice. Schumacher never once got off scot free for punting people off the track. It's all a complete figment of our collective imagination.

They are all so scripted. I caught the three chancellors having a mini debate and they just ignored the questions and carried on with their script. I think they should have a rule that if a direct question is not answered their mic gets cut off and they get sent to the naughty step for 10 minutes.

Interesting. Is it possible to reformat the table into theoretical championship order?

In the 1930s there was a European Championship for Grand Prix and it used that system, since I found that out I've been curious how modern F1 would look with it..

Thank You for pointing that out.... I really should proof read! I had done the new standings from the old standings and that threw off the points when copied :p

  • Steven Roy22/04/2010 at 18:55

Shoot me down, but I love the look of the F1 cars on 18 inch rims....

I can see low profile tyres causing problems. First half the suspension movement of a car comes from ths sidewall flexing. Reduce the size of the sidewall and the cars get even stiffer. I would guess that although radials have near vertical sidewalls the sidewall still gives a degree of protection on contact with a barrier or another car. Lower profiles must increase the chance of wheels being damaged.

I think the argument from some of the tyre companies that F1 running lower profile tyres makes them more road relevant in complete nonsense.

  • me22/04/2010 at 18:56

    cheaper though, right?

  • Steven Roy22/04/2010 at 18:59

    cheaper though, right?

I doubt there will be any real difference. I know it is cheaper for Michelin because they plan to use the moulds they use for Le Mans LMP1 tyres. So the saving is on the capital equipment cost rather than the cost per tyre

ahh okay. was assuming they'd be lighter, use less rubber etc

  • Adie22/04/2010 at 19:00

    But they look pretty!

Thing is, can Avon build a suitable tyre in the time they've got between now and the start of next season?

  • Steven Roy22/04/2010 at 19:01

ahh okay. was assuming they'd be lighter, use less rubber etc

They will use less material all round but I imagine the cost of material is incidental to the cost of the tyre

  • Adie22/04/2010 at 19:01

Adam Boulton (Sp) in HD is NOT good.

  • Adie22/04/2010 at 19:01

Neither is Boredom Brown though to be fair.

  • Steven Roy22/04/2010 at 19:01

Depends whether they are sole supplier or in a tyre war.

  • Adie22/04/2010 at 19:03

Depends whether they are sole supplier or in a tyre war.

Tyre wars = variation = more excitement for us.

However, a development race like that doesn't fit with the 'cheaper' F1 future though...

  • Steven Roy22/04/2010 at 19:06

However, a development race like that doesn't fit with the 'cheaper' F1 future though...

It doesn't cost the teams anything so the cost thing may not be an issue. However a tyre war means consistently dropping lap times which always causes problems

  • Adie22/04/2010 at 19:11

A tyre war means consistently dropping lap times which always causes problems

    Absolutely.

To be fair, the whole tyre rules as they are annoy me.

Forcing the teams to run both compounds in the race only serves to fit Bridgestone's agenda concerning PR and Marketing.

I say open the compounds up to a wider range of durability and give the drivers the opportunity to run 1/2 stop races if they like. The gains offered by soft tyres would be offset by the need to pit once or twice. Also, a driver could opt to run the full distance should they choose to do so and be in a position to manage their tyres to that effect.

THAT would add an element of variation to the races....

  • Steven Roy22/04/2010 at 19:14

THAT would add an element of variation to the races....

My argument has always been that Bridgestone should supply 4 compounds and the drivers should run whatever they like. If they want to make no stops or 99 stops so be it. It would mean every driver could have his ideal set up and at the end of every race the winning driver would be saying how great his tyres were rather than us watching people driving on tyres that are completely unsuitable

  • Adie22/04/2010 at 19:16

One thing I learnt from university - year 1 is a transition year from 6th form / college to university. They will help you through it and guide you for deadlines and give guidance when you most need it. Year 2 is more of a do-it-yourself "we won't chase you if you don't attend lectures" attitude, but if you ask for help you will get it.

I don't know what happens with year 3. I didn't get that far......

Took me 3 years and 2 attempts (6 months with a fudged bodyclock thanks to that wonderful pastime of F1) to realise I was rather inept at programming and 3D modelling. On the plus side, learnt a bit about plumbing models in UT3 and creating them in 3DSMax.

Stop self-doubting yourself, of course there will be!!!

I had a flat of 4 girls, 2 guys, me included. We all got along well, made friends with other flats, and see each other on an infrequent basis now some of us have moved away.

Honestly, being dropped in the deep end helped me socialise. I had a big problem with going out and meeting new people. This forced me to meet people, and I met like-minded people, even if all the girls were doing psychology or law, and the guys business studies.

You'll definitely find people like you so don't worry. It is daunting going into uni, most people feel the same way, but you'll be fine. There's no need for you to do things that you don't want to do like nightclubs or whatever, but there's so much more to student life than that cliche.

you'll find everyone in your flat goes out on the first night and you should too, but stake your ground, just because everyone else does something you dont have too, in fact alot of people are quite reserved on the first night because they dont want people to think of them as alcoholics!

I got some seriously weird looks when everybody else was drinking lager and I was drinking Guinness. They looked at me like I was alien or something.

Must be the ales I enjoy on an infrequent basis. I have a story I may tell in voicemail form. :D

The student bar where I went once served Heinekin from every lager pump because the manager got a bulk deal. Whatever lager you asked for it came out Heinekin - it really did manage to reach the parts other beers cannot reach.

I know I'm thread-jumping (yay for Doohickey) but the voicemails have been the best feature about the race debriefs. Even with the breaks between races (3 weeks between China and Barcelona? I reckon Bernie pre-planned the volcano eruption..... :D) I think a "what were the first 4 races like" podcast/debrief/discussion/forum would be a great idea.

Me too. Imagine Valencia with 1500bhp hand grenade engine and super soft quali tyres. That would liven it up a bit.

Or imagine Singapore at night with flames shooting out of the exhausts, sparks flying from the skid blocks and no stupid plank

    IDEA!!!!!

For the really boring processional races (Bahrain, Valencia, Barcelona, add your least-favourite circuit[s] here) F1 cars should be totally changed, separate rules for them. Turbos for half the races, N/As for the rest.

I was quite annoyed when I heard his interview with Jake last Sunday. he man is either going senile, extremely arrogant, or has absolutely no respect for the people in the sport(fans) who make him his money.

I think its disgusting. I don't know how other people in F1 can stand him. Even Norbert Haug has enough respect for the media to sit down and give a long interview about his team. Grrrrrrr.

There was a huge contrast in the way Christian Horner and Norbert Haug acted. It's not easy for them to answer questions right after tehy have lost a GP.

  • Jon 'National B' Waldock22/04/2010 at 22:44

    husband material maybe?

for Bernie? i think he's avaliable....

  • Steven Roy22/04/2010 at 22:45

Bernie apparently made Max a gratis payment of $300 million as a one off payment around 5 years ago just before Max started getting bolshy. The story first appeared on grandprix.com but is no longer there. THe last time I searched for it the only hit I got was me quoting the item elsewhere on Clive's blog.

So Max sold Bernie 100 years of commercial rights for $300 million and pocketed a similar amount himself and then had to move to Monaco.

    Allegedly

  • Alison22/04/2010 at 22:45

Yeah, ok, which kind of answers my original question. I have just had a lot of thoughts bouncing around in my mind about the sport.

    Never mind....nothing to see here.

  • Alison22/04/2010 at 22:48

He has tipped both of them to win races and championships in the past when it suited him.
