I apologize for the tardiness as my world time converter wasn't working all that well. Anyway, here is you new daily post writer for Tuesdays: Marilene Riddle (or yours truly). So what should you be checking out on this bright and sunny day (except for the sad lot affected by the Iceland ash)?
- First of all, you should really check out the Rally of Turkey on WRC.com. Not only has a certain Finn managed an amazing 5th place, it has an extremely cool podcast covering all the daily happenings on the road (second to Sidepodcast of course, but still...)
- Next, head over to various other blogs for more F1 (or just racing) goodness! Pimping for: Joe Saward, Gavin and my own.
- The latest edition of F1 Debrief is out. Done by the listeners, for the listeners (with editing by the lovely Christine).
We also celebrate Alianora's Sidepodcast anniversary (albeit belated), and hope for the skies to clear so that drivers will no longer be relegated to economy class seats.
Tomorrow you'll have Gavin who lives in Denmark, so hopefully you'll have more on time dailies. ;)
Hello Tuesday
nice one marilene, didn't realise you had a blog too.
great daily marilene :) thanks

He has parted his hair on the other side but this will not fool her
Hi Jeremy, did you get your iPad?
okay i must sleep now, night all! xx
night lou.
Sweet dreams Lou
Hello Tuesday,
Race report finally finished (and massively late due to work commitments). I must say, the more exciting these races, the longer the reports, so China kind of goes on.
I jotted this out from reams of notes on Sunday morning, so if I missed something, don't be surprised.
http://theformulaoneandmotorsportsarchive.wordpress.com/2010/04/18/2010-chinese-grand-prix-shanghai-round-4-april-16th-18th/
No. Grrr.
Will wait for Aussie 3G version to be released but am looking at MyFi type devices as well just in case I decide to get wifi only version from USA
Was that your friends mentioned on the MacBreak Weekly podcast?
[Sydneysiders buying in New York in bulk]
Hi Leigh
hi bassano,
what goes on?
Yes. I know quite a few people with iPad now. As I said, Grrr :)
Chaotic airports beginning to resume to normal
Other than that, 3 rest days ahead of me [w00t]
You?
not much
Working and (just finished) writing. My typing tips are sore - I wish GP's were duller so that I could write less
;)
I don't have mine yet but I need this Suede Jacket

Ah, a blogger's life
;D
I was reviewing stuff for my other website tonight too, so it feels like I lost Monday. No plans for tomorrow, so I shall rest
:)
For the first time in probably 4 days, I heard an APU* fire up today. Everyone noticed it, normally it doesn't turn heads
[*APU - Auxilliary Power Unit: small gas turbine in the aircaft tail, provides electricity and air when engines aren't running]
a mate of mine lives out near heathrow - he was saying it's been bizarrely quiet for the last few days
I like that. I'm still using my iPhone naked so I think it will take me a while to find a case that I like for iPad.
Leigh, as a Londoner you may be interested in this.
Crystal Palace, Classic Car event:
cheers bassano - i may have a grand look at that
:)
in the meantime, interesting things in the US probably?
http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2010/04/20/tony-goes-to-china/
f1 in the us would make me very happy. make it happen bernie.
George has long enjoyed a good relationship with Bernie Ecclestone and back in 2003 he did a very smart deal and acquired the rights to host any event called “The United States Grand Prix at…” from Ecclestone.Smart move
it'd make me happy, but not on the streets of new york - there are far too many good tracks in the US for that (wishful thinking and all that)
I remember when that was announced and thought the same
I kinda doubt that a US GP would go to a remote circuit now
A city keen to attract tourists like Denver, Phoenix possibly
Who knows. F1 should be Stateside though
Road Atlanta is not too far outside of Atlanta itself. It's also an awesome track with a great feel to it.
Denver was a parking lot for Champ Car - always looked awful. Would they go back to Phoenix..? Interesting if they did something akin the old US GP, but a different oval... the 2-2.5 mile ovals nearly all have in-built road circuits for sportscars, etc...
I also love the way that Joe digs into a story. Few people do that now
The analysis of Mercedes' marketshare & age profile for example, from the last two asides
Actually Jim, you'd probably know better than us what the circuit situation is there - my only knowledge comes from CART/IRL and crumbs of NASCAR
No ovals. No way, ever.
Ever!
Ha haa - F1 at the Texas motor speedway!! Now that would be... interesting...
:o
Yea, Road Atlanta is great. It's probably my favorite track outside of VIR and Lime Rock. Great surface, the speed you can get after turn 7 is awesome and the breaking challenge going into turn 10 would be something Hamilton and 'Nando would take great advantage of.
anyhoo - i've to be back up in five hours, so good night folks
have fun
:D
shame they'll never construct a purpose built city around road america, but it would be too much to hope for i suppose...
Night Leigh
I am such a good stalker that I can tell fleshy heikki from cardboard heikki

Are we gonna have to find you a London Finnish bar to hang out in?
Nah, i'm sure there will be plenty of finns at spa so kiwi bar in london will do me fine.
Double points for Finns in a Kiwi bar though! :)

Tweet convo with @CroftyF1:
Have checked in, flight boards in 30mins. Relaxing with John Button and having breakfast. As you can imagine John still a very happy man
Bassano:
Does he wear pink shirts for breakfast?
@CroftyF1:
I can confirm that John is wearing a pink shirt this morning. But it's not part of his 8 shirt race allocation for 2010
Bassano:
Fair enough, as long as he realises that he may be eating breakfast from the pitlane in Brazil!
Woo hoo my working week is over! Now to go see a friend i havent seen in 2 years Hooray!
Morning all. Yay for a fab daily!
Morning, how do you do? :)
Very good! How are you?
Very good thank you. Sun is shining, snow is glittering.
Morning - yes it's cool eh!
funny watching the updates from all these people trying to find way out of China. I know quite a number of people trying to figure out the exact opposite - how to make it from Europe to Asia. Everything is relative :-)
Morning guys! Loving the new daily format of people writing them :)
We shoulda done this sooner!
Same here - it rocks!
An Austraian charity for children will soon be auctioning off a Mark Webber Xbox 360 - http://www.xbox.com/en-AU/konsolesforkids/default.htm

ONE MILLION DOLLARS!"
:D
Hello guys. Sorry for the late post. :S
Ha, don't worry. When I leave Mr C in charge, it often appears four hours late, if at all!
Ok then. ;)
scanned the news - due to volcano ash we are here now officially running out of Norwegian salmon, Dutch flowers and dentists (all kinds)
No salmon!
EVERYBODY PANIC!!!
Over here we've run out of tulips too. As well as hotel room space.
Dentists?
up north in China they are most worried about running out of Chateau Lafite, of any vintage ... (what a screwed up country...)
Likewise in Switzerland, a Hong Kong delegation of 40 dentists that attended a conference on implants last week is unable to return home. All their dental appointments have been cancelled for the time being.
Where are you, if you don't mind me asking?
Sneaky pluggage: http://smarterthanyouraverage.com/2010/04/20/a-stream-of-consciousness/
Singapore.
I am keeping my eye on the news to make sure we don't run out of Greggs Sausage Rolls. So far, everything is calm and OK.
#greggswatch
Do you think they're getting down in the mouth about these toothless decisions or do you think they will be on the tooth-hurty flight home?
Going to the race this year?
Oh wow!
There would be rioting.
maybe, maybe not. depends on how much I have saved by the end of the month. ;)
What about Cornish Pasties? I very much enjoyed having one of those while I was in the UK!
@AussieGrit: Christain Horner and I are now on a plane to Scotland!hope we can get in!!o by the way have lost my passport too.fun huh.
How does he get on the plane then? And where is Seb?
well, my visitors, who just arrived after all night train ride from Vienna to Rome were advised in Rome that now their best bet for getting onboard Hong Kong bound plane would be in Frankfurt ... now, how to get there :-)
Mmmmmm yummy :) I shall make sure they do not cause riots too!
I managed 3 flights in a row between various European airports in January without having to show any ID to anybody even once ... I could not believe that but that is how the security works these days ...
They do like these in Cornwall very much.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/wutm/305837858/in/set-72157594391345477/
12!
:D
Everything in cornwall tastes yummier. pasties, sausage rolls, ice cream...
What happened to preventing terrorists from entering your country?
no idea, I was not in my country :-)
... did you have Mark Webber in mind specifically when you asked this question ? :-)
maybe... :P Or more like EJ.
I tried to show my passport in Germany once and they laughed and said don't worry we're all European friends. Security seems lack but I do enjoy going to Germany much more than the US. :-D
Yes please!
ID control is very lax, but hand baggage security (especially if it inlcudes computer and photo camera) ... Germany is the toughest I ever encountered , and every single time ...
The theatre of security is a joke really.
Indeed. Munich is particularly bad, as most airports let you buy and take on the plane a bottle of water bought airside. Not Munich though - I spent two hours very thirsty because they installed extra security before the gates and took it off me...
Not for me, they did everything but buy me a beer. Which was a good job as I only had hand luggage as the Swiss decided to take my main luggage elsewhere. Germany 1, Switzerland 0.
Oooh. Favouritism?
When I went through Gatwick I emptied my stuff into a tray and they told me to put my coins back in my pocket. Of course this set off the metal detector so I got frisked. A week earlier with almost the same clothes and no coins it didn't get set off. I got the impression they wanted an excuse to frisk me.
Peru had the strangest security. On arrival it's a rush to get your luggage before anyone else does as there is no security what so ever. That's because they're all in the departure side seeing how many freebies they can pilfer on the way out.
I have heard some funny stories about Switzerland!
Well Germany has beer, Switzerland has fondue. Switzerland needs to try harder than that to win me over.
Frankfurt Airport is awesome and very large. I always enjoy transiting through there!
Why don't you guys do a ranking of the main airports in Europe? Then I can decide which will be the 1st country to go on holiday to when I strike it rich.
I loooooove Copenhagen airport. I could live there.
Problem is, none of them compare to Singapore!
You do? Really? I'm very curious as to why!
At the other end is Charles de Gaulle. The #1 reason to never go to Paris.
what I do not like about airports in Europe in general is the need to pay for WiFi at almost all of them ... same applies to US though but there they take it to another level, they charge for wifi even in airline lounges ...
:)
#
seconded.
Hong Kong ! wait, that is not Europe ... :-)
You're not tricking me in to doing an analysis of furnishings that easily.
Do they have 5 star couches that I should know about?
I do hate Las Vegas. Stuck there for 8 hours waiting for connection and there is nothing to do there but give your money away to slot machines. The only seats in the place have a slot machine in front of them. It's like "Welcome to Las Vegas, you're here to gamble? Well don't bother even leaving the airport"
I like Hong Kong airport. Excellent air conditioning. :-D
No, in fact there aren't that many seats at all...
I was once stuck in transit in Harrare for 8 hours, I tell you, Las Vegas is a paradise compared with that ...
I think any airport that makes an effort should have that.
I got lost in Hong Kong and when I transited through all the shops were closed!
Nice loos though ;)
What I like about Hong Kong is that you feel like you're in North Wales at the foot of Snowdonia... but then you step outside.
and what time of the day was that ?
... and you hit a stinky humid greasy wall we call air here :-)
I thought it was supposed to be a shopping haven?
About 8am I think. The sun was up at least.
well it is, but probably not at 2am in the morning at the airport that has more less no flights during the night :-)
that could have been 6am :-)
Doesn't matter. You would think with all the people in the airport that at least some of the shops would be open?
looks like most shops are open 7am to 11pm.
If twitter ever crashes again, we now know who to blame
http://twitter.com/yuji_ide
Gaaahh!! I shouldn't have said that, iPod Touch has crashed and frozen up again. It's doing it several times a day at the moment and it's really frustrating....
Cool F1 betting facts here.
The ones on schumi and red bull are especially funny, but I can't understand why jenson is still rated lower than hams after TWO WINS.
They fail to understand the Jenius ;)
(excellent blog post by the way, and thank you for the disclaimer :P)
No prob. I remembered it from some where so I just checked it up.
And thank you. ;)
That's the one :-)
perhaps because those rating the drivers believe that Hamilton will do better in "normal" racing conditions, and the odds are that not all the remaining 15 races will be wet.
I'm not so sure now to be honest!
me neither but that would be my explanation
But Jenson is 3-1 in qualifying and 2-2 in race results as compared to hams. He is still better.
I'm really pleased with Jenson this year as he has really proved he was no fluke in 2009. It's going to be great watching those two battle it out this season!
I do not argue with that, I am only trying to see some logic behind the odds in Hamilton's favour
cool head vs. hot head :-)
Marathon vs. Sprint?
I would be surprised if "sprint" approach works this years with the current heavy fuel long stint regs ...
Tire care vs. Speed
Lovely :)
Also try a Dorset Pasty. #localbias
#nothere
while we are talking about HAM he is South Africa driving around Kyalami track. http://twitpic.com/1h0bi2
Tim is happy
http://twitter.com/JAIMEALGUERSUAR/statuses/12506993819
:D !!!!
:D
Even so, Hamilton has still turned a 1-3 deficit into 2-2 and Jenson's two have swung on tyre choices that could have easily gone wrong but in hindsight were inspired.
What I like about Jenson and Lewis though is how well they seem to work with each other. You can say some of it is PR stuff but they genuinely banter with each other in press conferences in a way few pairings in F1 do.
Lucky *@$#
Also, I'm not one to bring politics into the comments, but there's just no way to not share this... I mean... what that....?!!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q7OGUAQSYQ4
If it's a way of making politics more fun or whatever... then... I have no words to describe any of that video!
That's because Jenson is charming. Sincerely, I think that Jense can get along with most of the grid as team mates. Whereas Hams isn't nearly as well liked.
Anyway, the season is still early. Already Ferrari has friction, and it might spread down the paddock. I can't wait. #rubshands
checked one of his previous tweets - he calls it incredible, I say insane :-)
Increible! Shangai- beijing, beijing- new york, new york- madrid, madrid- barcelona! Thank you iceland!!
I think he should join the Amazing Race.
he isn't really liked would be probably closer to reality ...
Bernie should have made more of this, first team to get to X
Possible F1 reality show idea in 3, 2, 1...
in an F1 car ! :-)
Have Sauber managed to leave the track yet? :-)
Be fair - their car is not that slow ;)
Will Virgin be able to complete the trip?
yes, but not on full throttle :-)
Maybe not even on half, considering how their tank is smaller than the rest. XD
http://grandprixdiary.com/grand-prix-diary-2010/2010-gp-china/bernie-comes-up-with-radical-plan-to-get-all-teams-apart-from-virgin-out-of-china
btw, it is just brought to my attention exactly how scathing a comment "It's just as exciting as racing with any other driver." is. Schumi has really lost his way.
loves.
I am in a bar drinking mocktails. Bassano would be so ashamed to know me
awesome stat of the day:
[Hamilton] has been one of the hardest charging drivers this season - having completed 32 competitive overtaking moves in the first four races – but it is Button who heads the standings having completed just seven passes.
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/83067
he would probably mock you.
experience counts i guess.
Prost would be proud
http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/2010/04/more_from_eyjafjallajokull.html
some nice pics of the source of the travel entertainment ...
I am keeping my eye on the news to make sure we don't run out of Greggs Sausage Rolls. So far, everything is calm and OK.
#greggswatch {Comment #75}
If they haven't run out yet, I don't think they will because as far as I know, Greggs Sausage Rolls are made of British ingredients in British farms and processing places. No need for planes.
awesome!
Question: was the Indycar race at Long Beach worth watching?
well, Sato was there for the entire duration of the race. that may not happen again, ever :-)
Heikki and Lewis were the same and I know that Heikki is a friendly guy but he's certainly not like that with Jarno. I think this is my favourite photo I took in all of 2009 :D
Morning all
Weather has caused the first shuttle landing opportunity of the day to be cancelled. They expect the sun to burn off low level fog at Kennedy as the first landing opportunity was around half an hour after daylight.
The next opportunies are 14:01 UK time at Kennedy or 14:09 at Edwards.
Inconclusive... I watched it on the IRL Race Control and they stuck with the leader for most of it, which wasn't interesting, apparently there was action behind him..
Today I bought a lamp that projects stars moons and planets onto the walls #sidepodspace
You have a personal planetarium
Interesting. That was probably a different dynamic between those two though, like a 1-2 relationship, while this year it's still not clear who is the number 1 in the team...
it was in the childrens section but I don't care. I shall take photos when I manage to get it attached to the ceiling.
Leo finally has had enough of Calacanis. About time Leo. Asking to use your brand is one thing but Jason is using it to compete with Twit.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ONSDGdnb9Yk
Jason apparently is really upset that Leo is unhappy with him stealing Leo's brand. Poor diddums.
http://calacanis.com/2010/04/18/my-official-statement-on-the-leolaporte-thisweekin-com-controversy-twit-twist-twi/
I should probably be way too old for this but I don't care, it is cool
jason calacanis always was and always will be an absolute turd.
Don't ever believe you are too old for stuff. If you like it you like it regardless what convention says
Too bad I don't get to sleep in my room for the next 10 days. I wonder if my parents like colourful planets :D
Didn't Christine write a post about this? She didn't agree with Jason using someone else's idea?
I must admit I find the whole matter confusing and rather encroaching on Leo's turf. JC basically wants to use a good brand name to up his own reputation I think.
Best Advice Ever. I'm 28 and still play with some kid's stuff like Video Games. I am having fun whilst those who don't approve are being boring. Their loss!
no she didn't: http://smarterthanyouraverage.com/2009/05/02/lets-get-it-started/
I wrote about it at the time, before we knew what Jason's real plans were: http://smarterthanyouraverage.com/2009/05/02/lets-get-it-started/
"...even if Leo gives it his blessing, anything beginning with “This Week in…” now screams of copying the TWit network, or of one not doing their homework properly. Must try harder."
I can't begin to imagine why he wants it so much that he'd risk this with Leo, but that's how you get successful, I guess.
Yay for double plugs!
Impressive mr c!
this comment gives some insight:
This is not about TWIT. From some of your initial comments on air, I knew right away that you were trying to do a roll-up. Your end goal is to acquire TWIT so that you can sell the entire TWIx network to a big media company.
Do I get an assist? :)
There must be brownie points for that. Remembered and plugged.
It has been noted :)
Best comment ever: jason should do a show called “this week in backstabbing”
hehe. i love that no-ones siding with jason on jason's own blog.
Actually that makes a lot of sense. There's a follow up post with a transcript from one of the shows: http://calacanis.com/2010/04/20/background-on-the-this-week-in-controversy/
Jason Calacanis: Actually this is my prediction. I predict that there’ll be three or four networks like This Week in and Leo’s and they’ll all wind up merging and be like this mega company.
Even the polite ones are saying that it's kinda uncool.
right. except why would leo want to share anything with jason?
I assume Jason is one of those people that thinks everyone is motivated by money.
Bernie-esque
I only scanned the comments but that was definitely my favourite. The really annoying thing is that he is getting traffic out of this. I have never been to his site before and I am sure many others will go for the first time on the back of this. Nice to see he has a coterie of fanboys to polish his ego. Yes Jason we remember you asking Leo to do this week in start ups so its not your fault at all.
Jason... As an angel investor, your money is now toxic.
love it.
I hope this isn't another Arrington situation where Leo relents. Time for him to put the boot in and cut off Jason's exposure on TWIT
What happened with Arrington post-"screw you"?
grr something in my house is tripping the main fuse. Now I get to play the fun game of 'find out what keeps turning the power off'
he really really really really is an idiot.
They had him on the Stackoverflow podcast because he runs moloholo and he was absolutely convinced that Stackoverflow would never work because you didn't pay people to answer questions. Joel explained the point to him again and again that this was totally wrong but he didn't get it. He couldn't understand that people could be motivated by anything other than money.
(Joel actually pointed out that answering questions for a small amount of money is a demotivator in these things. Answer questions for fun and you know you are having fun. Pay people and people say, "I just spent six hours and you're giving me 4 bucks no way".)
yup, that's jason.
They all went back to being mates and caried on like nothing had happened
It is snowing in my home town. SNOW!!!
he's not on any shows though is he?
That's why I assumed he still wasn't friendly with him, because he hasn't been on TWiT much later...
found it! You will not beat me, electricity!
:)
Sure it's not just ash? :-)
I have never listened to the show he did before but I got the impression from comments Leo has made on other shows that things had calmed and they were just going to carry on as before.
Woohoo! I have edged below 1000 unlistened to podcasts!
Can't be can it?
odd. he really hasn't popped up anywhere though.
If my flatmate asks you why her TV has been turned off, tell her it was killing the fridge :D
#sidepodspace
Looks like we are going to get a landing. They are going to make the final decision in a few minutes but they are doing all the things they would do as if it is happening.
Well my car had a fine covering of "snow" this morning
The fridge provoked it
#sidepodspace
We are go for landing
Apparently there has been a major storm and there was a power surge so the TV might be broken. I somehow completely missed the storm, there was a couple of flashes while I was eating dinner, but nothing after that. Although I did then go to an underground bar, so the apocalypse may have happened at street l evel and I wouldn't have noticed.
Landing will be in just under an hour and a half. De-orbit burn in 18 minutes and once they do that they have to land
I have settled for 'An investigation into the implementation of I.T. to enhance the delivery of Primary Education and Special Educational Needs' for my dissertation, printing out two copies of all 86 pages later... my poor printer balance... but it has to be done. ;)
It'll be nice when it's all bounded and in a book come Thursday morning.
Well done Lukeh
Wow, that's a long title. Well done mate!
amazingly my tutor said it was short compared to some of the final drafts she's been discussing!
It has to be said, i enjoyed the 90 second F1 highlights way more than the race ;)
did you watch the wrong race?
I have a lot of colleagues with travel problems right now. You should hear some of the amazing stories!
or qualifying?
Are you John Hindhaugh in disguise?
I'm really not enjoying F1 at the moment, not sure why
ooh i wish
I understand what you mean. However good the race was, it felt artificial.
I was quite tired when i watched it, but i just got bored, didnt even finish watching it
Could it have been that you were listening to Legard? Crofty certainly had a belter of a race...
F1 races have been artificial for years. Now they are less artificial although the competition yellow made it look realy artificial but I think that is probably a function of the TV coverage not showing what the problem was.
woah, now the storm is here *hides under bed*
So i hear, I do prefer crofty
During the moment he started yelling about "Jenson Hamilton" I couldn't help but think that if that was Legard, people would be crying for him to be sacked.
Some of the drivers claimed they didn't see the debris either.
Whatever, to be honest, I wouldn't watch if it was boring so they may as well make it entertaining somehow...
seconded
Everyone makes mistakes. It's just that Legard's style is so boring and lacking in words that it makes them worse...
he also claimed nico was leading the race at one point, and mistook alonso for massa at least 6 times. bad day for croftie.
We don't want NASCAR
yet...
in truth, only because coverage sucks in this country.
must've been thinking about how he would be getting home :D
ahh 'tis chaos 'rown 'yer
http://www.bridportradio.co.uk/content/view/2178/136/
We don't want a procession either.
#sidepodspace
De-orbit burn complete and near perfect. Shuttle will land in Florida in an hour
ooh yay!
To me, mistakes are OK (I remember Murray making loads) as long as they are corrected later. To be fair to him, he has to talk so much for radio and with so much going on it was inevitable that he would slip up. At least he keeps you interested though...
crofty has charisma and seems genuinely interested in f1 :) coupled together with the banter with Ant and it makes for brilliant listening even with mistakes...Legard doesn't have any of this...
#nothere
Jenson Hamilton would make the most awesome F1 driver in the history of F1 ever!
I don't mind Crofty's mistakes, and some of Legard's definitely annoy the stuffing out of me but sometimes I feel like the man can't even say 'good morning' without everyone complaining about it.
I prefer Fernando Raikkonen. :P
He is not exactly under pressure though. Put him on a sidepodpanel and ask him to do an impression of a Top Gear presenter doing an impression of an F1 car and lets see how he copes if he can't handle just talking about racing to a few people. ;)
Some of the debris was in the pitlane entrance, so they wouldn't have
:) :)
Hehe, also found on the site... we're having a hat festival! Giggles should bring his.
http://www.bridportradio.co.uk/content/view/2095/136/
We had the same thing with Murray. Loads of people complaining about mistakes but in reality you can't talk for two hours on anything without making a few mistakes
normally though croftie isn't that bad. it was walker-esque on sunday.
It felt a little artificial because we couldn't see it properly, but it was the right decision, lots of carbon fibre everywhere before they run down that long straight...
oh btw #iamherenow Hi
Because BBC cut off the end of 5Live's recording I had to hear the end of BBC 1's commentary. Or rather, the sentence strewn out over 5 laps. The delivery is slower than Test Match Special and after the race we saw was even more surprising...
Your town is clearly rocking!
Hi Pat
The shuttle is currently just above Amy's head. Fortunately her head is under the bed so she should be OK
The storm has passed so I am back out now. I hope it doesn't crash into any of the spacey things around me.
People in the USA have the best chance they will ever have to see the shuttle today. Normally it comes in from the south west but for reasons I don't understand today it is coming in from the north west and is going across the USA.

My flights are now being advertised as $700 dearer than when I booked them.
NASA TV woman explained it but as usual she made no sense. The landing was supposed to be 1 minute after the hour (surprise) but it is now 8 minutes past so they changed the path to achieve that.
Amy should be OK as it is now over the Pacific
http://www.spaceflight.nasa.gov/realdata/tracking/index.html
Got confused just there and thought the F1 guys were coming back via shuttle but I see the two things are not related...
Is it on NASA TV?
Wonder if the Shuttle gets affected by ash?
Maybe Bernie has a bid in for the three shuttles. They nly have one mission each after this one lands and then they are up for sale. He could have them for the 2011 season
Yes
It didn't land yesterday because of a water cloud never mind ash. I would guess ash would do nasty things to a windscreen at Mach15
Yay!
For those who don't know NASA TV is at www.nasa.gov/ntv
At the moment it is just men in suits. They really should get some cameramen floating in space for this.
Less than half an hour to landing and the shuttle is still 38 miles up and travelling at 17700 mph
The problem is until they are doing less than Mach 20 there is so much interference they can barely get a radio signal through let alone video. Don't know why they don't show the onboard more though when they can get a signal through
am wondering if litepanels would help. am guessing even they have their limits.
:D
Woah! How did I miss that?
Why is mission STS-134 happening before STS-133?
I have no idea. Just NASA being NASA I guess. A lot of missions have been done out of sequence but you would think they would do the last one last
Hmm. I need to have words with these NASA people.
we have some free time on our hands now...
Someone needs to sort them out. Now you have free time you should take over NASA TV
"Additionally, Litepanels has recently delivered lighting systems to NASA for use in the International Space Station."
http://www.litepanels.com/news/news_details.asp?ID=34
I saw some litepanels at my Father-In-Law's workplace the other week (they market and sell LED products)...
Homer - Is there anything they can't do?
When the shuttle stops going up, will all the astronauts flock to Russia?
Da!
how come everyone has litepanels but me?
I don't have a litepanel if that's any help
NASA just signed a deal with Russia to lauch their astronauts for several years and wrote a nice big cheque. Obama is planning a Mars mission so I don't think they will defect. He wants to send people to orbit Mars and come back. That;s like flying to Melbourne and standing outside listening to the cars go round
I did too and I only live a minute from Snook's
You have stopped doing live shows and video so you don't need them
The Bridport Hat Festival is to be an annual event to remind people just how stylish that wearing hats can be and how stylish Bridport can be.
Hehehehe.
A bit of Pressdog satire which is equally applicable to F1 :)

Shuttle commander has a problem with the sun in his eyes. I thought they were supposed to be high tech and solve these problems
Sunglasses?
Ooh, look, there's a poster and everything!
http://www.bridporthatfest.org/
Shuttle have just switched on their sat nav
Oooh, there it is!
We have shuttle video
The best thing was the comment on the other article... :)
Apparently an India chap is flying over to Bridport from Mumbai to exhibit his hats, that's right, he's the Slumdog Milliner!
Ground track of landing path
http://www.nasa.gov/images/content/445736main_KSC238_close.gif
fair point.
I still can't believe we are only going to see this three more times. it's like grounding Concorde all over again
HAC is the heading alignment circle
They arrive over the runway and then descend on a spiral pattern
I think Kimi would have sorted that...
I guess not many of you guys would have noticed but the best product placement in rallying this year has to be Kimi with his Oakley shades...
A different design or frame for every rally...
Tag Heuer must be spitting...
I love sonic booms. I wonder if they scare birds out of the sky
awesome
What are we going to live comment then? :(
rubens?
Watching a Soyuz plummetinf to Earth to land with a splat can't be the same. The ISS is still there and there will still be spacewalks although no doubt it will be harder to keep track.
Rubens in Space?
Nice landing. The shuttle pilots seem to be quite good
I love entering the comments at a wierd moment
What an awesome idea.
He must have put the sunglasses on.
isn't he doing branson galactic?
Ooooh! When's that happening?
He didn't need them. They were going to land in the opposite direction but decided against the change because of the sun. Quite how the sun was worse in the NW than the SE in a northern hemisphere morning I am not sure
mid 2011, i think. isn't lauda the pilot?
He wants to train to fly it but they won't let him fly the first one surely
I want to see his little dance in zero g :)
no idea. was assuming rubens wouldn't be first either.
it has been flying though, here's a video: http://www.examiner.com/x-38335-Science-Fiction-Examiner~y2010m3d25-Virgin-Galactic-successfully-completes-captivecarry-test-flight
To Gavin, it's the Queens real birthday tomorrow if you're lacking stuff for the daily :)
Your Queen?
Yup, Denmark has a Queen?
I think the passengers for the first flight are Branson and his family
Yep.
cool, does she have 2 birthdays as well?
Indeed. Her proper one was last week and the official one was last Friday...
The next shuttle mission is due to launch in 4 weeks time. Looks like NASA has finally worked out how to crank out missions just as the fleet is about to be grounded
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/83074
This has to be the BEST story I have EVER read.
I am sure Schumacher used to make comments like that
I am enjoying the 5liveF1 road trip.
Ok our car contains the following Bradley driving, Crofty navigating, Holly doing telemetry while Ant and Producer Jas are eating Haribos
They need to go Nice to Caen in 11 hours and Ant isn't driving
He was earlier.
Ant just did a sub 3 second peage stop!! Now driving without using the clutch just to gain us some time!!
http://twitter.com/5LiveF1/status/12510244488
I see he has done his stint and drove like a hooligan. How can he get 23 Pringles in his mouth?
We really needed a Twitpic for that.
I want to know if he did it one by one and if he lay them on top of each other, because 23 is alot but less so if they're just laying on each otehr
I thought drivers were supposed to have tightly controlled diets. 23 Pringles followed by Haribos
Getting 23 pringles in their mouth should be a clause towards gaining a superlicense
I think it should be the clause tbh
3 seconds! operator must have been on the ball..
he must have had to... err.... "get ready" before the car even stopped...
of course, it's quite possible I've mistaken whatever a "peage" is for "pee-age".
ah :)
French for toll booth
Its a bit busier over France now http://www.radarvirtuel.com/#
oh no! :(
bradley lord?
I had much respect for Ant, thinking the way I originally thought.
:)
No operator involved
Don't know any other Bradleys
Have just had a chance to catch up with the links in the daily... Gosh these guest posts have really added something... the second to last link goes somewhere quite surprising!
ha. yeah, i thought that :)
Quite a nice post from Mclaren :)
http://mclaren.com/news/2010/04/20/finding-safe-passage
Gaaahhh, does anyone know about 2nd gen iPod Touch's locking up? It's been happening for a while but today it's been really bad... the ipod just locks up completely and freezes, and it takes ages to even turn it back on because it gets ridiculously hot after it's locked up...
Put it in the fridge in a plastic bag for a bit?
I don't want to eat it :)
It does blend though ;)
what channel is the football on tonight?
Sky Sports 1 or 2

CHeers!
Evening everyone,
Hope you're all well - I got this short titbit up on the blog at stupid o'Clock this morning
An Interesting Run: http://wp.me/pSi0N-63
Ahhhh that's nice - tea's been made and is just brewing.
:D
I have discoverred white Magnums in the freezer! Good times!
Evening. I've been mega-procrastinating by reading all the fun on Twitter about people trying to get home. I'm supposed to be cooking dinner and writing a blog post..
Jake just made it to Dover..
http://twitpic.com/1h3sf6 - Never has a stretch of coastline looked so beautiful...now for the coach...!
hullo
Hey hey
Evening all... i have been stranded here for another couple of days, and sacrificed 350 Quids worth of deposit for another week in my old apartment to avoid my worldly possessions being repossessed.
Still, Alison is coming down to make sure i dont get too stressed.
All my teachers are stuck around the world trying to get home...
This would be awesome if:
1) I couldnt work online
2) I wasnt supposed to be moving house!!!!
Oh dear...
I still have to go to school though... my year is the only year cos we have our GCSE's in like 4 weeks
I may use this excuse for work on Friday. I'm not sure if a bus journey is affected by ash though.
Have you thought about coming up to Newcastle? I do believe we have flights going out to Dubai. And we are the only active airport in England ( #smug). Dunno if its still domestic flights though, we had some British Airways flights come in just before.
I dont think they are flying to dubai yet as they cant climb high enough before the ash is too dense.
Unfortunatly i have a cheepy ticket, so can only go from london. Or pay 500 quid for a late fare
Welsh buses fly? Wow what a great country! Shame about the sheep...
Mrs. Goat came home an hour early as Copenhagen airport opened :)
Ooh, Gavin, did you get my email?
Yeah, how many exams you got?
14 exams
oooh loovely
I have summer from 18 June to 2 September though so don't feel too sorry for me :)
I have summer from 1st June to 20th September. Trust me, i really don't :D
Same as me then :)
grr, ok now I am angry :)
Sky News are saying all uk airports to open at 10pm tonight
Oh, I have 1 hour and 27 minutes of smugness left then.
ooh, you heading off tomorrow?
I haven't had an exam in years........ makes me feel alright
;)
Well don't worry, Iceland have another volcano that is going to blow its top. We're not out of the ash just yet...
ahh, boo.
Yeah, but that'll cut Newcastle Airport (still open) off. And I'll have nothing to be smug about anymore.
Sky have effectivly just said that we were the only country in europe who considered that level of ash too dangerous though!
The civil Aviation Authority have just overruled the air traffic controllers
I was, but emirates say that flight is still cancelled, i rebooked as soon as it was, so now flying saturday
oh yikes.
*looks around for basement*
I guess its one way to test my theory that this was slightly unnecessary!
no disrespect intended, but i am very glad you work in computers, sir.
;)
Indeed. It's a little different when a computer and an airplane crash ;)
The Register has a good article about the Met Office, their mathematical model and how it doesn't match reality.
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/04/20/mystic_met_volcano_model/
Ha! :D
Lets hope i dont go back to what i studied at university.... International Relations!
Channel 4 is sinking. Heston is re-creating the last meal on the Titanic
Hey guys, my Fantasy Racers post for China has just been published: http://f1numbers.wordpress.com/2010/04/20/fantasy-racers-2010-shanghai/
Ahhh Heston, cooking up Channel 4's own absurdity - what's not to love?
On 4OD their British Formula 3 page has a picture of Lewis Hamilton in an F1 car on it...
fail
Watching last week's through the magic of t'internet
Yep - just started writing now - sorry, I had to get the Fantasy Racers post done first!
No probs. Just wanted to make sure it had got to the right place :)
is Nick around?
#nothere
Lou,
Heston
noooo!!! don't... am... coursework.. is... important... must.4od.later...
You have missed most of it anyway.
Shoo - it's for your own good ;)
am going (have been typing allllll day!) just wanted to make sure Nick know about this competition
http://www.facebook.com/yasmarinacircuit?v=app_7146470109&ref=ts#!/yasmarinacircuit?v=app_4949752878&ref=ts
seeing as i don't live locally i figured someone from spc should enter ;)
#isgone
Evening. Just came across this and all I have to say is - this is a rally car?!
http://www.topgear.com/UK/car-news/hyundai-pikes-peak-2010-04-20
Apparently. I have been told a lot of the course is paved now, but still how will his car have clearance for the gravel bits?
This car looks like it'd be more at home at Le Mans rather than Pikes Peak!
They paved it? That is crazy.
It's clear someone took an image of a Peugeot P1 car and then dragged it smaller laterally.
I've been playing this new Lemmings type of game on the iPod and it just gave a funky little cameo a few people on here might like - http://twitpic.com/1h4e77 :)
What's it called then?
Tiptop. It's only 59p and its very addictive. Basically have to draw out lines/stuff to control where the little characters go.
Thanks :)
Lemmings drove me insane as a kid!
Christine,
I have submitted a post for your review. Hope it's ok :)
Ooh, yay!
buy a Mac? :P
Not.a.chance.
I see the flight landed at Heathrow, smugness, all gone :(
*hands RG a highlights tape of Tottenham vs Chelsea* there ya go :)
Woohoo!
Hiiii :D
Evening. Are you in London again?
No
Everning Alison.
Where in the world are you?
Game result PING
http://toomuchracing.com/2010/04/20/tmr-game-week-13/
My house? I might go back down to London tomorrow morning. I'm torn. I wish I understood what's going on.....
I am now!
Eeek, Jon is literally right behind me
Hey Alison
Aha!
Looks awesome, i shall have a read :) Thanks!
hooorah
Are their flights getting out of London yet?
I don't think so. So many of the planes are displaced, I think a lot of them are returning to position tomorrow.
(I just updated that post with pics to make it look nicer)
I think ineeded to take a photo last week to enter:) But i am now officialy a fan of the YMC :)
There are flights going in, but i guess engines are less important when you are trying to hit the ground anyway
:D :D
Please never get a job making important decisions :P
:D
:)
question for alison... if nick can work from the uk anyhow, why is he in dubai?
#confidentialfromnick
An Octopuss steals a camera... then a spear gun. They are scary/awesome at the same time... i dont think i would like to meet one
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/8633304.stm
Since she is away...
It isnt that easy, even with all the communication tools i have, would say i am 40-50% less productive than in the office.
We have people all over the world, but for my job i do kinda need to be able to question people, and lurk on some conversations :)
ahh fair enough.
#ithasnothingtodowiththeweatherorthetax
:P
The Koreans are confident
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/83077
Good on 'em. I hope he's right.
:)
she's not having one
It better hadn't!!!!!!
the circuit has it's own airport?
I'm interested on working out how its 79% complete. Sounds very specific.
Like Japan, The politics of Korea are a little odd and they tend to end up with quite a lot of airports in odd places for politcal reasons
Part of the same development perhaps? Not sure they are connected in terms of ownership but clearly its there because the track is..
Sounds like everywhere else tbh!
but if you build an airport here, half the country are convinced you might wake up a womble!
nonsense. you'll never fit an airport on wimbledon common.
My ARDS test is tomorrrow!
Aaaaaaaagh!
Dont you mean...
Arrrrrrrrrgh-ds!
oooh i like
Try telling that to the 777 pilot who had a double engine failure just before the perimeter fence of Heathrow a few years back
Evening!
Perhaps I shouldnt have seen this as a challenge!
Size of wimbledon (&putney) commons: 1140 Acres http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wimbledon_and_Putney_Commons
Size of random airport in texas: 79 acres :) http://www.city-data.com/airports/San-Saba-County-Municipal-Airport-San-Saba-Texas.html
But I bet he was glad he wasnt just before the perimeter fence taking off!
It's fine, we already banned Nick from deciding things! He can make trivial decisions for me but I should definitely deal with important stuff lest we all end up dead.....
:)
That's a mere Municipal Airport
Pah! :)
I can see why ;)
If I didn't know better, I'd say he pulled it from an autogenerated computation in Microsoft Project. :D
Hello, folks. Back home this morning. Will get some sleep. Later! ;)
:D
hi! bye!
night guys!
see ya.
Hi & Bye Journeyer
Given how far away it is from Seoul AND Busan, it's a logical (if very pricey) solution.
Think Magny-Cours with bigger buildings and an airport. ;)
I thinks it's Crumpets & Coffee time
I'm off to bed. Some idiot is going back to London tomorrow :P
Night Alison
G'night Gavin
awww! night
:D
So, I guess Morocco has been put on hold then?
ihave the wrong type of ticket, transfering to nice or rome would mean buying a late ticket at full price, plus the best part of 500 pounds car rental.
Was cheaper but painfull to extend my apartment rental for a rip off price
Sound fair [for the conditions]
When are you leaving?
Booked for saturday, going to try for thursday and friday though
If you're booked for Saturday, you think you'll be able to leave early?
Im hoping they pull the a380's from the aus route and out them onto london, if they do that they might have spare seats
Not if the Aus route is full of premium passengers they won't
I think they have a lot of people stuck in dubai, so that could be the priority.
there is also the chance that people will cancel holidays so more seats could open up
And also a six day backlog of passengers
Are you rehashing my reassuring words and spouting them as wisdom? :P
:)
:) :)
Why would anyone cancel a holiday they have paid for when they have no chance of a refund?
If you have travel insurace there could be
And if you only have 10 days off work and have missed the first 5, you might reconsider spending a day or 2 flying longhaul, especialy with the uncertainty of return?
Also people connecting from flights from north america might not make it
Postponing to less uncertin times. Plus airlines have been offering refunds
Where is the daily ping now that the new daily is up?
sorry...
ping: http://sidepodcast.com/2010/04/21/daily-21st-april-2010/
Airlines will but hotels and the like won't. Anyone who has not started a holiday is not going to cancel it as they won't get any refund. People who have missed part of their holiday are probably not going to start it now but how many people can that affect? A good deal fewer than a 6 day quewe
