I apologize for the tardiness as my world time converter wasn't working all that well. Anyway, here is you new daily post writer for Tuesdays: Marilene Riddle (or yours truly). So what should you be checking out on this bright and sunny day (except for the sad lot affected by the Iceland ash)?

  • First of all, you should really check out the Rally of Turkey on WRC.com. Not only has a certain Finn managed an amazing 5th place, it has an extremely cool podcast covering all the daily happenings on the road (second to Sidepodcast of course, but still...)
  • Next, head over to various other blogs for more F1 (or just racing) goodness! Pimping for: Joe Saward, Gavin and my own.
  • The latest edition of F1 Debrief is out. Done by the listeners, for the listeners (with editing by the lovely Christine).

We also celebrate Alianora's Sidepodcast anniversary (albeit belated), and hope for the skies to clear so that drivers will no longer be relegated to economy class seats.

Tomorrow you'll have Gavin who lives in Denmark, so hopefully you'll have more on time dailies. ;)

    Hello Tuesday,

Race report finally finished (and massively late due to work commitments). I must say, the more exciting these races, the longer the reports, so China kind of goes on.

I jotted this out from reams of notes on Sunday morning, so if I missed something, don't be surprised.

Hi Jeremy, did you get your iPad?

    No. Grrr.

Will wait for Aussie 3G version to be released but am looking at MyFi type devices as well just in case I decide to get wifi only version from USA

    hi bassano,

    what goes on?

Chaotic airports beginning to resume to normal

Other than that, 3 rest days ahead of me [w00t]

    You?

For the first time in probably 4 days, I heard an APU* fire up today. Everyone noticed it, normally it doesn't turn heads

George has long enjoyed a good relationship with Bernie Ecclestone and back in 2003 he did a very smart deal and acquired the rights to host any event called “The United States Grand Prix at…” from Ecclestone.Smart move

  • Leigh O'Gorman20/04/2010 at 00:28

it'd make me happy, but not on the streets of new york - there are far too many good tracks in the US for that (wishful thinking and all that)

I kinda doubt that a US GP would go to a remote circuit now

A city keen to attract tourists like Denver, Phoenix possibly

Who knows. F1 should be Stateside though

Denver was a parking lot for Champ Car - always looked awful. Would they go back to Phoenix..? Interesting if they did something akin the old US GP, but a different oval... the 2-2.5 mile ovals nearly all have in-built road circuits for sportscars, etc...

Yea, Road Atlanta is great. It's probably my favorite track outside of VIR and Lime Rock. Great surface, the speed you can get after turn 7 is awesome and the breaking challenge going into turn 10 would be something Hamilton and 'Nando would take great advantage of.

    Bassano:

Indeed. Munich is particularly bad, as most airports let you buy and take on the plane a bottle of water bought airside. Not Munich though - I spent two hours very thirsty because they installed extra security before the gates and took it off me...

A week earlier with almost the same clothes and no coins it didn't get set off. I got the impression they wanted an excuse to frisk me.

  • Maverick20/04/2010 at 08:43

Peru had the strangest security. On arrival it's a rush to get your luggage before anyone else does as there is no security what so ever. That's because they're all in the departure side seeing how many freebies they can pilfer on the way out.

  • RubberGoat20/04/2010 at 08:44

Not for me, they did everything but buy me a beer. Which was a good job as I only had hand luggage as the Swiss decided to take my main luggage elsewhere. Germany 1, Switzerland 0.

    Oooh. Favouritism?

I have heard some funny stories about Switzerland!

  • Maverick20/04/2010 at 08:44

    Oooh. Favouritism?

Well Germany has beer, Switzerland has fondue. Switzerland needs to try harder than that to win me over.

Why don't you guys do a ranking of the main airports in Europe? Then I can decide which will be the 1st country to go on holiday to when I strike it rich.

what I do not like about airports in Europe in general is the need to pay for WiFi at almost all of them ... same applies to US though but there they take it to another level, they charge for wifi even in airline lounges ...

I do hate Las Vegas. Stuck there for 8 hours waiting for connection and there is nothing to do there but give your money away to slot machines. The only seats in the place have a slot machine in front of them. It's like "Welcome to Las Vegas, you're here to gamble? Well don't bother even leaving the airport"

perhaps because those rating the drivers believe that Hamilton will do better in "normal" racing conditions, and the odds are that not all the remaining 15 races will be wet.

Even so, Hamilton has still turned a 1-3 deficit into 2-2 and Jenson's two have swung on tyre choices that could have easily gone wrong but in hindsight were inspired.

What I like about Jenson and Lewis though is how well they seem to work with each other. You can say some of it is PR stuff but they genuinely banter with each other in press conferences in a way few pairings in F1 do.

That's because Jenson is charming. Sincerely, I think that Jense can get along with most of the grid as team mates. Whereas Hams isn't nearly as well liked.

This is not about TWIT. From some of your initial comments on air, I knew right away that you were trying to do a roll-up. Your end goal is to acquire TWIT so that you can sell the entire TWIx network to a big media company.

hehe. i love that no-ones siding with jason on jason's own blog.

  • Christine20/04/2010 at 11:30

This is not about TWIT. From some of your initial comments on air, I knew right away that you were trying to do a roll-up. Your end goal is to acquire TWIT so that you can sell the entire TWIx network to a big media company.

Actually that makes a lot of sense. There's a follow up post with a transcript from one of the shows: http://calacanis.com/2010/04/20/background-on-the-this-week-in-controversy/

Jason Calacanis: Actually this is my prediction. I predict that there’ll be three or four networks like This Week in and Leo’s and they’ll all wind up merging and be like this mega company.

I only scanned the comments but that was definitely my favourite. The really annoying thing is that he is getting traffic out of this. I have never been to his site before and I am sure many others will go for the first time on the back of this. Nice to see he has a coterie of fanboys to polish his ego. Yes Jason we remember you asking Leo to do this week in start ups so its not your fault at all.

  • me20/04/2010 at 11:35

I assume Jason is one of those people that thinks everyone is motivated by money.

Jason... As an angel investor, your money is now toxic.

    love it.

I hope this isn't another Arrington situation where Leo relents. Time for him to put the boot in and cut off Jason's exposure on TWIT

grr something in my house is tripping the main fuse. Now I get to play the fun game of 'find out what keeps turning the power off'

  • Alex Andronov20/04/2010 at 11:37

jason calacanis always was and always will be an absolute turd.

he really really really really is an idiot.

They had him on the Stackoverflow podcast because he runs moloholo and he was absolutely convinced that Stackoverflow would never work because you didn't pay people to answer questions. Joel explained the point to him again and again that this was totally wrong but he didn't get it. He couldn't understand that people could be motivated by anything other than money.

(Joel actually pointed out that answering questions for a small amount of money is a demotivator in these things. Answer questions for fun and you know you are having fun. Pay people and people say, "I just spent six hours and you're giving me 4 bucks no way".)

  • me20/04/2010 at 11:39

Apparently there has been a major storm and there was a power surge so the TV might be broken. I somehow completely missed the storm, there was a couple of flashes while I was eating dinner, but nothing after that. Although I did then go to an underground bar, so the apocalypse may have happened at street l evel and I wouldn't have noticed.

I understand what you mean. However good the race was, it felt artificial.

F1 races have been artificial for years. Now they are less artificial although the competition yellow made it look realy artificial but I think that is probably a function of the TV coverage not showing what the problem was.

To me, mistakes are OK (I remember Murray making loads) as long as they are corrected later. To be fair to him, he has to talk so much for radio and with so much going on it was inevitable that he would slip up. At least he keeps you interested though...

  • Steven Roy20/04/2010 at 12:57

When the shuttle stops going up, will all the astronauts flock to Russia?

NASA just signed a deal with Russia to lauch their astronauts for several years and wrote a nice big cheque. Obama is planning a Mars mission so I don't think they will defect. He wants to send people to orbit Mars and come back. That;s like flying to Melbourne and standing outside listening to the cars go round

  • Pat W20/04/2010 at 12:58

Channel 4 is sinking. Heston is re-creating the last meal on the Titanic

Ahhh Heston, cooking up Channel 4's own absurdity - what's not to love?

Apparently. I have been told a lot of the course is paved now, but still how will his car have clearance for the gravel bits?

This car looks like it'd be more at home at Le Mans rather than Pikes Peak!

It's clear someone took an image of a Peugeot P1 car and then dragged it smaller laterally.

Given how far away it is from Seoul AND Busan, it's a logical (if very pricey) solution.

  • Nick20/04/2010 at 23:13

Why would anyone cancel a holiday they have paid for when they have no chance of a refund?

If you have travel insurace there could be

And if you only have 10 days off work and have missed the first 5, you might reconsider spending a day or 2 flying longhaul, especialy with the uncertainty of return?

Also people connecting from flights from north america might not make it

  • Bassano20/04/2010 at 23:14

Airlines will but hotels and the like won't. Anyone who has not started a holiday is not going to cancel it as they won't get any refund. People who have missed part of their holiday are probably not going to start it now but how many people can that affect? A good deal fewer than a 6 day quewe
