I can hear you all yelling at me 'RG, I'm stuck here in northern Europe with simply nothing to do. How shall I spend this dull Monday while I pray for that awful volcanic ash from Iceland to go away?' Well, visitor of Sidepodcast, welcome, to the kind of new look Daily Post. With, as you can probably guess, a new writer. Each day of this week will feature a different writer of the Daily. Tomorrow, you will have the lovely Marilene here. But for now, you are stuck with me.

So, what should you look at while you are stuck at home?

  • It was an unusually exciting Chinese Grand Prix yesterday. And typically, Sauber and Timo Glock didn't manage to reach ten laps (for the second race in a row). Lukeh has an excellent recap on his blog and I keep looking at the new teams (don't look if you are a Timo Glock fan...).
  • And while you are thinking about the race, why not send in a voicemail to Sidepodcast? This will be edited into a bit of a montage, so a perfect excuse to air your thoughts. You can call them on +44 121 28 87225, Skype them by finding the username sidepodcast or even e-mailing a mp3 to them at [email protected]. Go onnnnn.
  • And a final little plug, in preparation for the new F1 game by Codemasters coming up in September, Lewis has written about the good and the bad of F1 games in the past. It is a good little read so please do check it out!

That is all for this Monday, so while the volcanic ash grounds thousands of people, I still have to go to school. 'But wait' you cry 'for your heroic efforts in keeping me busy, how shall I repay you?'. Well, you can catch me on my blog The Northern Waffler, or at Triple League Racing where I co-blog, or if you are so desperate, follow me on twitter @SauberRG.

Have a good Monday (if possible).

Morning, folks. Just dropping by before I go round Shanghai today. A shame I'm missing the Expo... it's just 2 weeks away.

I think you, your parents, Paul and Pamela all really want to see the harbour bridge and opera house this week.

Ye, with pamela. Mr c, its the new craze sweeping the world, sidepodcast meetups. Youre just like a social network only not making billions. And all is sorted with my flatmate, I have to meet first potential new flatmate at 7, then I can go to dinner and she will meet the ones at 7.30 and 8. Flatmate hunting is hard.

For example when James Bond needs to learn something about a baddie he has some specific requirements which are outside the norm. These special educational needs are often met by Q branch with their wizzy gadgets.

First landing attempt of the day scrubbed due to precipitation and cloud. If they are going to make the next opportunity they have to initiate thee de-orbit burn in 50 minutes.

Normally there are only two windows at Kennedy every 24 hours so if they miss the next one they need to reset everything and go tomorrow. They have the option of landing in Edwards in California but they don't normally take that on the first landing day.

There will be no shuttle landing today due to low clouds in the vicinity of the Kennedy Space Center. Deputy head of the Astronaut office Chris Ferguson tried some landings in the shuttle training aircraft but had to abort them without getting near the ground as he had no visibility.

The first landing opportunity tomorrow at Kennedy is 6:33am with another an hour and a half later and there is the option of landing at Edwards at 8am with a second 90 minutes later.

Using a torch, the 37-year-old amateur photographer hunts out the motionless bugs in the darkness before setting up his camera and flash just millimetres from them.

I bet the dew disappeared quickly when the flash went of millimetres in front of their eyes

the cynic in me suggests the insects were probably captured and doped first. i don't believe they wouldn't move long before a photographer got near otherwise.

and it says that he used a torch to find them too, so i am inclined to agree

the cynic in me suggests the insects were probably captured and doped first. i don't believe they wouldn't move long before a photographer got near otherwise.

The cold probably dopes them as they have no real body mass to hold a body temperature. I would guess when the temperature gets low enough they are like reptiles. Effectively he temperature anaethetises(spelling?) them

Australian travellers were likely to pay more to travel to Europe over the next few months, Flight Centre spokesman Haydn Long said, adding: "It's a case of supply and demand.

"Overwhelmingly, people who have been affected still want to go to Europe later in the year and flights are already fairly full because we are coming into peak season.

"Any seats that are available are going to be that much harder to get and it's going to be the more expensive fares."

In all seriousness, definitely have a look round cardiff and cardiff bay especially. Tenby is a lovely part of west wales as is havordford west and you could always go into the Brecon Beacons to do some trekking, not of the star variety.

Urrrmm... there's Mount Snowdon as well, and in Newport we have a transport bridge. I think that is literally everything thing in Wales.

Castles are fascinating structures. When I was in hospital in caerphilly a few years back you could see it's castle from my window standing out in the middle of the town with a moat surrounding it and it looked so cool, I've never really gone inside it though if only for a very short trek with my mum when I was really young. It's hard to be impressed by our castle in Newport because it's next to a main roundabout in the city centre and all that's left of it is a wall and a few towers that are faling apart, in about 100 yards of length.

  • Pat W19/04/2010 at 15:09

I think she also wants to see other parts of the UK too, she started rambling about London congestion charges. I shall hit up the comments for advice at some stage in the next 10 days, for sure :D

I seem to remember a nice steam train journey near Aberystwyth.

  • Pat W19/04/2010 at 15:11

I've never been to a proper castle. My country is too young for that sort of carry on :( I've been lead to believe everyone over there lives in houses older than New Zealand.

I'm sure time can be found. There's bound to be several on the way to Spa and we have time to stop. Or any of the other places you're going in Europe

  • Amy19/04/2010 at 15:13

There's lots of reeeeeeeally old things in Rome so I think lots of 'wow this is really old my mind is blown' moments will happen there

  • Pat W19/04/2010 at 15:14

Why do some F1 reporter think it is a good idea to fly to Helsinki? You can't really drive anywhere from here.

You can get on a boat then drive from wherever the boat ends up.

Pamela and I were discussing tonight how insane we find it that Europe is right there and lots of people in the UK haven't been to most of it because to us trapped down here it's like an awesomely expensive adventure, but you are still at school so you have a good excuse :D

  • RG19/04/2010 at 15:17

i disagree with the conclusion: So a chocolate teapot is really not very useful, but slightly more so than you would expect.

  • Pat W19/04/2010 at 21:27

Ah ha. How did you prove before that you are you?

You took your driving licence and a photo to the post office, they checked it and sent it to the passport people, and a shiny new passport would be sent to you.

wow! that's really lucky. when i got my last passport, we had to have several taken. first my hair needed to be tied back, then they insisted i have one without my glasses, and then another in a different photobooth thing cause apparently it made me look too pale. this may almost makes me want a tv again: http://www.trustedreviews.com/home-cinema/review/2010/04/19/3view-Freeview-HD-500GB-PVR---Hands-On/p1

a pvr that records programmes, but also streams iplayer, lets you tweet and can control your radiators... sorta.

Probably thinking about all these stupid rules and restrictions

  • Alison19/04/2010 at 21:50

their excuse was something about how the frames might be hiding a birth mark or something. It took us 2 months to get a passport, and cost us heaps of money :s

That's plainly insane. Did you show him that you didn't have a birth mark lurking under your glasses? I'd have complained about him or gone to another post office....

  • Kathi19/04/2010 at 21:50

I think I won't take my passport to Belgium. I'd just forget it somewhere.

  • Pat W19/04/2010 at 21:50

Yes. Another pointless "improvement" to the system. Whatever was wrong with the old paper licence (I still have mine, sadly it has the wrong address on it).

I quite like having a little card with a photo on it, it helps when you get carded in the shop... It also means we don't need ID cards.

It highly irritates me to the point I've nearly walked out leaving a trolley full of shopping, if it weren't for the hassle of going shopping again. :) That said it hasn't happened since my birthday..

You should just walk out - that gets the message across very well.

What irritates me more are the stories about people getting stopped from buying alcohol simply because they have an under 18yo person with them.

There's no point, they'd only do it again. I had the same person ID me more than once, they don't remember. Maybe they would if I walked out..

But yeah we've had many instances reported to the local paper, especially about the Co-Op, of people not being able to buy a bottle for themselves just because they had someone with them that looked underrage or near to it. There have even been elderly people asked for it, and they were alone. Ridiculous.

We already do where I live (including for children's safety scissors with 3+ ratings), but that's not making ID cards any more accepted an idea round these parts. It just means everyone ends up taking their driving licences or passports whenever they want an age-restricted product. Unfortunately the government is planning on forcing everyone who gets a passport to get an ID card as well eventually.

As far as I can see, all ID cards will do is make it easier for us all to have our identities stolen.

I was asked for it a lot when I was 18 - and a touch below ;) - which is fair enough. By the time you get to 22 you get a bit tired of it. By the time you get to 30 you want to throttle them.

  • Steven Roy19/04/2010 at 22:53

For anyone who missed it earlier the space shuttle didn't land today owing to a cloud of water. It will now attempt to land tomorrow at 12:34pm tomorrow. There are two landing slots at Kennedy in Florida and another two at Edwards in California within a two hour spell. If they don't take any of those four slots they reset for Wednesday

  • lou19/04/2010 at 23:24

Nick told me not to come :(

:( i suppose there is nothing stopping you going back down if his flight doesn't leave and he is stuck here?.. or nothing stopping him coming up north? (seeing as the northern airports may be opening first?)

This does sound great for pics -

'Visitors will also be able to stroll around the open paddock, watching mechanics at work, chatting to the drivers and soaking up the relaxed atmosphere, doubtless helped by the circuit's parkland setting.'

'Visitors will also be able to stroll around the open paddock, watching mechanics at work, chatting to the drivers and soaking up the relaxed atmosphere, doubtless helped by the circuit's parkland setting.'

The first day, Sunday, will be dedicated to both modern and older machinery, with everything from standard shopping cars to fire-spitting World Rally Cars expected, and just about everything in between. Bank Holiday Monday will celebrate the history of motor sport at the Palace, with cars dating from 1899 to 1972, plus a few modern surprises littered throughout the day.
