Fine, we promise not to do a bunk today. We'll stay indoors where it's safe and nothing ever happens.

If you missed the events of yesterday, you'll be needing to look at this photograph. Hand on heart, Rob Smedley is every bit as fantastic in person as he appears on the TV/Radio and Sidepodcast loves him to pieces.

In terms of what's happening elsewhere in F1, what do we have to consider?

  • Rachel found a video interview with Bernie, where he claims he doesn't want F1 to leave Silverstone. Yup read that sentence again and then watch the video. Finally, pinch yourself to make sure you didn't dream the whole thing.
  • Dan's been keeping abreast of Joe's latest postings and recommends we all check out this fine article. I'm going to read it right now and you should do the same. Go right ahead, we'll meet back here in five.
  • F1 Wolf has also posted about his day in the Paddock Club sipping champagne and driving in an F1 simulator (hopefully not in that order). The man returns to Silverstone later today.

In Sidepodland, we've had a spate of de-lurking in the comments these past few days, and we welcome all newbies with open arms. If you're still yet to join in the fun, now would be a really good time to step up and say "hi". We'll be around all of Saturday, live commenting our way through Free Practice and Qualifying. Try it once and you'll wonder how you ever enjoyed racing without it.

    Good day everyone.

Qualifying with a side of political musing... it must be the British Grand Prix!

Bernie will be up and about unless its a full moon in which case Max will be howling at it.

we're hoping too. we got back later than planned today, and realised all of our recording equipment was on our backs and needed wiring in. so we sorta messed up the timings.

will let you know as soon as we do though.

Looks good to me but with my record on proof reading that may not mean much.

Rachel is doing well. She has had a mention in the daily post and a word in the dictionary within a couple of days of delurking

  • Dan Brunell19/06/2009 at 23:44

    hahahahahaha

I was actually looking for the complete version of an old Goodyear ad from the 80's which has to be one of the greatest F1 related ads I have ever seen. I was actually putting a blog post together on the topic.

The ads would show a bunch of Ferraris and ask, "Why does every Ferrari that leave Italy have Goodyear tires, because Mr. Ferrari wants it that way."

Here is a link, but I wish it was the complete commerical. LINK: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9doD25_ENZ8

  • Chris19/06/2009 at 23:46

Hahahaha you think I'm putting myself forward for some kind of quiz???

The panel isn't really a quiz. It's meant to be a place where you can share your views on certain topics with the listeners, unfortunately, if Christine doesn't agree, you can loose points! (If she does agree, you gain them though)

  • Pat W19/06/2009 at 23:46

    Exactly.

I'm hopeless at speaking with real words and I went on. And if I can do it, anyone can.

A lot of people have been very shy about how they sound on the phone. It took ages to convince Lou to do it but she loved it and a few shows later she hosted one. You really would be missing out. THe next one isn't for a couple of months so you will know us better by then.

  • Paul20/06/2009 at 00:27

Racing teams should do more of this, and less corporte speak. It would shut a lot of people up, aspecially about favoritism and the like.

  • Dan Brunell20/06/2009 at 00:28

Never heard of her but it seems to me she talks a lot of sense

Hehe. JV "in talks" for F1 return. Is that what F1 would be, a retirement home?

If all the 'top' drivers are in FOTA, then I reckon FIA F1 will become the new DTM. Ex-F1 drivers looking for a nice little earner, young drivers looking to move to a big FOTA team, and a bunch of nobodies

I would love to see JV back. Now that we have slicks and next year narrower front tyres the cars would suit his style. To me he is the ideal man for USF1

Just looking at photos. It certainly looks revised, but I guess you would expect that anyway. They did say they had some "minor" changes

Heh. They are notoriously inconsistent. One night they wallop the Mets into a pulp, the next night they get beaten by them.

They're doing better this year than last year, though, so good on them.

  • Journeyer20/06/2009 at 01:27

  • Journeyer20/06/2009 at 01:35

My local sports talk presented it as anarchy in F1 and wondered what sport in the US could follow suit. They surmised College Football and Golf.

  • Journeyer20/06/2009 at 01:49

Remember when Max said he'd sue, sue, sue?

It seems FOTA's beaten him to the punch there, too.

    From JA:

They responded this evening by saying that they have already launched an arbitration process at a civil court in Lausanne, this was done on Monday. This will establish the validity of the contract.

It's an EU court. Advantage: FOTA.

"So it's like Dale Jnr in one series and Robby Gordon in another?"

  • Joe in Fla20/06/2009 at 01:58

The one point they kept coming back to which I had wondered about. NASCAR owns alot of its own tracks. I was wondering if the FIA had any control over the tracks that F1 currently races. I guess not, so we may be seeing two GP's at some tracks next year if this isn't resolved.

True, the factions are usually Dale vs. Jeff, but all the Dale and Kyle Busch people hate each other right now for some reason....like I care.

  • Journeyer20/06/2009 at 02:04

Is Robby no longer a star?

He was never really a major star per se. He got some headlines for getting into some fights, but on the whole never did well enough to really be recognized or accepted by the crowd.

  • Journeyer20/06/2009 at 02:04

It's hard to dislike Jeff, the guy's such a gentleman, as is Jimmie Johnson. Kyle Busch, on the other hand, he's much more divisive - an easier target of anger, I think.

  • Joe in Fla20/06/2009 at 02:05

Robby must have some very loyal partners. That said, it's not very expensive to actually run a Cup team. What IS expensive is making it competitive. And Robby's talents don't seem to be fully suited to NASCAR. I've seen him thrive more in the deserts of Dakar or Argentina.

  • Paul20/06/2009 at 02:07

that's true and he did pretty good as an Indycar guy. I am paying a little more attention to NASCAR these days for Scott Speed. Since I am, I am seeing that Dale Jr. is just not that good of a driver, but try and convince one of his fans of that

I think it was a tribute to the Who, which nobody "got". He's good for the sport, since he riles people up. Most of the NASCAR guys these days are corporate shills. Kimi Raikkonen has more personality than the lot of them

  • Journeyer20/06/2009 at 02:11

He's an OK driver, and he did have a good run in his first years with DEI. But his form vanished for some reason, and it never came back.

He's also been struggling at Hendrick, but remember, he got Brian Vickers' old team - that's the only team that never got to enter the Chase, for some reason. Even so, he's not as good as he used to be.

I follow NASCAR now for our old F1 friend Juan Pablo Montoya - he's hanging around just outside the Top 12, and I'm hoping he makes a breakthrough this summer to get into the Chase.

  • Journeyer20/06/2009 at 02:13

They do, as long as they get enough TV. They are getting quite big for their boots. They insisted on equal billing with Indycar for example.

  • Joe in Fla20/06/2009 at 02:19

I ran across a story out of Charlotte, NC. Dale Jr, is now deciding to get in shape. he wouldn't say how far he was running though. that's great, midway through your career you decide to get in shape as you're on your downward slide. He going up against guys like Carl Edwards, who was on the cover of Men's Health Magazine. Now I would never put NASCAR and F1 near the same catagory, but if you are in shape, you will do better in NASCAR.

Too bad they hardly run them anymore. Back in the 80's I was a huge NASCAR fan, but they left their fan base long ago. And my favorite driver got shuffled out of the sport, Lake Speed. Can anyone tell me who he beat for the World Karting Title?

yes, and after they took over Adelaide, they seemed less interested in Albert Park. Especially since it's a non-championship race. But they were back this year which is good. We have so little other racing now, that V8s are the only draw card

Speed was a great channel when they were Speedvision. They would show all sorts of Touring car and GT racing from all around the world but I got really ticked off with them when I was watching a WRC race and in the middle of one of the drivers runs they cut away to talk about a nascar race that had just finished. These days I rarely watch Speed.

The PR names are heavyhitters as well. The FIA still has Richard Woods (who also worked on Spankgate), while FOTA has David Burnside (who has represented BA and Sir Jackie Stewart in the past).

he might have forgotten to pack something rather important

Schoolboy error! I have a particular pocket in the manbag for passport, passes, etc, but still always forget to pack something – usually toothbrush/razor/antiperspirant.

    Good morning, Europe!

    Morning!

  • Journeyer20/06/2009 at 07:04

Hahaha blimey. Is Bernie high? What is he doing pawing at Martin Brundle at the end there?

Bernie and Martin have the oddest relationship. I remember Italy last year, when Martin approached Bernie, then Bernie asked him if he was still working for ITV. And they were joking about Martin needing an umbrella. Can't quite remember what they said, but it was hilarious at the time...

I have the same experience. :D It's all right to forget the antiperspirant, just don't forget to bring a cellphone charger... ;)

  • Alison20/06/2009 at 07:06

    How's everyone this morning?

Chirpy chirpy! Trying to avoid getting up though. More or less time to go to work :(

    You work on a weekend?

  • Alison20/06/2009 at 07:09

    You work on a weekend?

Yeah. I manage a shop. It's busiest at weekends, I kinda need to be there.

  • Scott in Italy20/06/2009 at 07:12

yeah that last 10 seconds was interesting ;)

Ohhh, I see. What stuff do you sell? :)

  • Alison20/06/2009 at 07:15

Yeah - cafe sounds nice. You'd be a barista, then! :D

  • Alison20/06/2009 at 07:18

Yeah I suppose. Anyways I better get moving or I'll be late. I don't think that gives the best impression ;)

    Good morning.

  • Journeyer20/06/2009 at 07:38

    Good morning.

    Morning, Christine! :)

Will be rushing off now - hope to be able to join you from Mobile Doohickey for Quali. Have fun!

One more thing - iPod Touch OS 3.0 is Five Pints of Awesome! :D

  • Alex Andronov20/06/2009 at 07:39

    Good morning.

And how are we this morning? Hope the coldness didn't get to you in the end.

  • Christine20/06/2009 at 07:41

And how are we this morning? Hope the coldness didn't get to you in the end.

Hehe, I think I have escaped the Sidepodflu. Different kind of rough today. The kind that is a long week followed by two hours sleep followed by more excitement than one should pack into a day.

    Can't complain though :)

  • Alex Andronov20/06/2009 at 07:42

    Can't complain though :)

Exactly. A peck on the cheek from Rob cures all ills!

  • Alex Andronov20/06/2009 at 07:43

I have also just discovered that Dave Gorman is doing a podcast. I can't believe I missed this?!?!

  • Christine20/06/2009 at 07:47

I have also just discovered that Dave Gorman is doing a podcast. I can't believe I missed this?!?!

The one from the radio? I subscribed but haven't listened yet. Wasn't sure if it would be many, because it's just when he fills in for Frank Skinner.

  • Amy20/06/2009 at 07:50

I just went on a 4 hour mission to get the right ingredients for Qualy snacks. The things I do for F1....

    ....and my belly....

  • Alex Andronov20/06/2009 at 07:51

The one from the radio? I subscribed but haven't listened yet. Wasn't sure if it would be many, because it's just when he fills in for Frank Skinner.

Yes that's the one I have now realised. Ah well at least it's something I guess.

Also in other news due to my new larger iPhone I am able to keep a copy of the Grell Mysteries with me which means I will be able to start going with that one.

Very good! My Librivox production has gone up recently since I've been sick of F1, but if they're gonna go and get things sorted, perhaps the balance will be restored.

  • Chris_Humphreys20/06/2009 at 07:53

    Good Moaning people

Ah I better get me that Audiobook app then.

*goes and gets that audiobook app*

  • Amy20/06/2009 at 07:53

That is a mission. What did you get?

Just chips + dip, but I have to make my dip the Kiwi way and it is surprisingly hard to find reduced cream here. I had to go to 4 supermarkets because the one nearby that usually has it was sold out :(

  • Alex Andronov20/06/2009 at 07:54

    reduced cream? Reduced fat cream?

    What is the kiwi way?

  • Amy20/06/2009 at 07:55
  • Amy20/06/2009 at 07:56

    ooh link fail. attempt 2.

  • Fiox20/06/2009 at 07:57

Hmmn, a depressed Bernie, surely he knows Max was wrong now? not to mention his money schemes have moved the sport away from the core fans and manufacturers needs.

Perhaps Fota's series will be called F1...

  • Chris_Humphreys20/06/2009 at 07:58

    maybe even Formula 11

  • Alex Andronov20/06/2009 at 07:59

That soup sounds very strange. But I'm willing to give it a go :)

  • Amy20/06/2009 at 08:00

That soup sounds very strange. But I'm willing to give it a go :)

I am shocked it hasn't spread across the Tasman let alone around the world. It's kind of a religion in New Zealand :D

  • Christine20/06/2009 at 08:00

Ah I better get me that Audiobook app then.

Yay for reading my blog :)

Stuck in my head now. Meanie.

  • Alex Andronov20/06/2009 at 08:14

as in: you can call me...

But Betty if you call me, you can call me Al...

Which works well because several members of my family are on there and they all call me Al.

an RBR. Cant be webber, so it must be Vettel I guess

  • Journeyer20/06/2009 at 13:51

    HE started it!

I thought British American Tobacco started it? And they just got Craig Pollock to run it?

Whatever the case, it's been through so many people already (Pollock, Richards, Fry, the Japanese, and now Brawn), JV's link would be very tenuous already for me.

  • Bassano Clapper20/06/2009 at 13:52

I think I have decided that the best outcome tomorrow would be for Jenson to win from sixth...

I'd be happy to see somebody else do it tomorrow, but from sixth would certainly make it an interesting race.

i'd like to see Webber do well, and Jenson on the podium (just cause he is yet to get on the silverstone podium yet). I just hope he doesn't too aggressive at the start and do something stupid like hitting kaz

  • Amy20/06/2009 at 14:08

I'd be happy to see somebody else do it tomorrow, but from sixth would certainly make it an interesting race.

Indeed, I would be bored if Jenson was on pole and drove away with it, but I would quite enjoy seeing him win from back there.

    Sorry,

    Ill go now

  • Steven Roy20/06/2009 at 14:29

I thought British American Tobacco started it? And they just got Craig Pollock to run it?

Pollock and JV started it and got BAT involved

  • Journeyer20/06/2009 at 14:29

Pollock and JV started it and got BAT involved

But why was it that BAT owned the team rather than Pollock?

  • Steven Roy20/06/2009 at 14:34

Jenson can DNF the next few races. just NOT silverstone... :(

Surely it is better to DNF when he starts 6th

  • Scott in Italy20/06/2009 at 14:34

    avg?

i used to use avg, but i haven't for the last 2 years because work dictates what goes on.

  • Steven Roy20/06/2009 at 14:34

But why was it that BAT owned the team rather than Pollock?

Pollock owned a chunk and so did JV

  • Alex Andronov20/06/2009 at 14:39

Pollock owned a chunk and so did JV

It was a JV with JV

even the Governor of California, Arnie,is twittering about his emergency plane landing.

i can't decide if news media is dead or not?

in effect, that's an entirely irrelevant post.

  • Scott in Italy20/06/2009 at 14:52

in effect, that's an entirely irrelevant post.

news media is dead. when cnn report facebook and twitters of personal opinion, it is dead. was it irrelevant, yeah totally. people in here often talk about the joys of twittering. i was just highlighting some of the bizarre uses. not so much the fact that he twittered the story, but the fact that cnn reports the story itself by the fact that he twittered - not that the plane had trouble.

  • me20/06/2009 at 14:54

i am so glad he twittered once he'd landed. cnn would happily have live streamed the emergency landing as an event.

    i meant cnn's post.

i guess the point i was making was that people got the news first hand and immediately. cnn didn't add anything that the original tweet/photo offered.

  • Scott in Italy20/06/2009 at 14:58

you can win but you'll never WIN :D

    think i'm disappointed ;)

i guess the point i was making was that people got the news first hand and immediately. cnn didn't add anything that the original tweet/photo offered.

the thing that I found odd was an hour ago they had the story that it happened (the plane thing) but without the twitter. yet they bothered to spend 10 minutes to update the story about that than invest in any serious journalism. if only someone would move to that country and tell the USA what to think...bring on september...

  • Alex Andronov20/06/2009 at 15:00

McLaren not one stopping him to jump Heikki. I am shocked ;)

  • Scott in Italy20/06/2009 at 15:58

trulli (4th on grid) is similar to webber (3rd) that might not be good.

  • Bassano Clapper20/06/2009 at 15:58

    Nakajima lightest on 652.5

Fernando & Kimi next on 654

    And the very same fuel

  • Scott in Italy20/06/2009 at 16:01

on equally weighted cars, i'd back him for the first corner. i doubt a few kgs will make a difference.

Who analyses the videos uploaded, YouTube?

I assumed it was from complaints, unless they match vids from Official Channels

  • Amy20/06/2009 at 16:42

I like our public broadcasters stance on youtube:

"Ms Gibson said the removal of the clips was in direct contrast to ABC's policy on content sharing. "[ABC wishes] to get our content out there on as many platforms as possible, run by as many different operators as possible.""

so basically they don't care if anyone uploads their shows.

they align themselves with the BBC though, and the BBC sure don't have that policy

correct. sort of. copyright holders upload an original master - so in this case FOM (or someone subcontracted to do so). and youtube software does frame matching analysis and pulls anything that's identical.

    it's not perfect though.

  • Bassano Clapper20/06/2009 at 16:45

Yeah, other video hosting websites are available :)

    I got this email:

"Your video, Rubens Barrichello interview, may have content that is owned or licensed by Formula One Management.

within seconds of uploading the video, which was within minutes of the race ending on TV. They are super fast these days. Then again, "Felipe Baby" is still up, months after that race.

  • Scott in Italy20/06/2009 at 16:47

so basically they don't care if anyone uploads their shows.

and yet they have a similar version of the iplayer where i cannot access content. but maybe that's to do with image licensing. especially for a story that shows sport.

Wow, thats not a big shock now, but had you said that before melboune it would hav ebeen crazy, BMW had a massive advertising campaign built around it.

I guess McLaren would keep it because it gives them something a bit different to fight with at that end of the field, and i guess Ferrari will keep using it where it helps them.

  • Bassano Clapper20/06/2009 at 17:51

I guess that's a small redeeming feature, but i suspect Mario isn't all that popular with the rest of the board in Munich.

Wasn't there to be a minimum weight increase for next year anyway?

yeah, 620KG i believe, but since Kers is going, and the teams will need to build bigger fuel tanks it isn't really an issue anymore

  • Scott in Italy20/06/2009 at 18:07

It's been reported that he's contemplating a return to F1.

It's any easy rumour when you see him (or any ex driver) turn up. they asked him on the bbc at monaco and he basically said he was around checking out the situation.

  • Joe in Fla20/06/2009 at 18:07

But no shortage of young talent to fill them

I was thinking about that. Wouldn't you be hesitant as a young driver to jump into USF1 or Campos now?

  • Nick20/06/2009 at 18:08

But no shortage of young talent to fill them

It will be difficult for him to arguge about his experience, he has been away from the sport for so long, and he claimed his poor pace with Sauber (?) was due to the sport moving along so quickly in a year.

I cant see it happening, unless he has big sponsorship to bring

  • Bassano Clapper20/06/2009 at 18:08

I was thinking about that. Wouldn't you be hesitant as a young driver to jump into USF1 or Campos now?

Sure thing. Visited the Renault garage in the morning and got to see the team take the diffuser off the car. Also held the R29's steering wheel empty of all its electronics so it was very light. Got to see the front wing and shark fin close up too. Also got pictures with Grosjean and Alonso! :D Also spotted Ted Kravitz, Louise Goodman, James Allen, Norbert Haug, Mike Gascoyne and I think Smedders going into the Ferrari motorhome.

Watched qualifying afterwards, was stood just at the beginning of Hangar Straight and saw a Red Bull go wide onto the grass in Q3. Tried getting pics as best I could but most of them are just blank track! Dem cars is too fast. :D

Got some lunch and then headed back into the paddock for all things BMW. Entered the BMW motorhome, look directly to my right and Kubica's standing there looking up at the TV screen! Interviewed both AND recorded both interviews :D Only got 3 questions with Kub but had a great one with Nick. Nice guy to talk to. Spotted *ahem* HIM as I was leaving.

Entered the support paddock to head over to the Formula BMW Europe hospitality. Recorded the FBMW race press conference and also the interview with HIM, Kub and Mario Theissen. Got pics from all 3 and Kub and Mario's autographs. Wandered through the GP2 paddock taking pics and then left the circuit to come here.

Been filming stuff for the Puma report all day, and also have been snapped by a professional photographer on both occasions I was in the paddock for my Renault and BMW stuff. Got plenty of pics too.

  • Bassano Clapper20/06/2009 at 20:13

    what fab day!

I was supposed to be at the circuit tomorrow at quarter past 11 but I've decided to get there for 9:30am so I can get a few bits of merchandise. I still want a Brawn GP cap and all those fans wearing one didn't help.

Hey guys, how's it going? Just watching my recordings of qualifying (first) and Friday practice (second) (yes I'm weird) and ironing. I'm sure you've already beaten the breakaway series announcement to death, but let me just add my own "hmmmm ... " :)

  • Scott Woodwiss20/06/2009 at 20:28

    And...

Apparently he says he couldn't be bothered to shave over the winter months and so it just stuck. But his GF likes it ;)

Did yours at least die on warranty? Ours politely waited until it was a few months past.

Friday practice, the TiVo version, is now concluded. Unfortunately, the ironing hasn't. And now I'm being forced to watch boxiing. Ugh.

  • James20/06/2009 at 21:18

According to PK's twitter Alonso gave him one of his helmets today... parting gift?

Really? wow wonder what Piquet has done to deserve it :D

  • Lukeh20/06/2009 at 21:19

Did yours at least die on warranty? Ours politely waited until it was a few months past.

are you sure? RRoD is now 3 years warranty and if you've had it hapen to you before, the 3 year warranty restarts when you dies. Each time mine managed to be underwarranty as I found out eventually no thanks to the not so helpful customer service...

3-year warranty is good news! Now to find the damn receipt. Good luck with that one.

And Captain Clicker has changed the channel, so no boxing live comments. Now we're watching American LeMans series something-or-other. Better.

  • Nikki20/06/2009 at 21:23

I doubt I'd be able to get in there. Unless it doesn't require a pass. My ticket is a platinum 3 day, but we were given passes just to get into the paddock and then had them taken off us when we were done.

Not really, weights show vet's lap was stunning, and we found out that Kubica is the grumpiest person in F1.

Also I am no longer funny...

  • Scott Woodwiss20/06/2009 at 21:54

Oh yeah, in the FBMW hospitality, when Kub, Klien and Mario were all on stage, Kub just sat there looking so miserable. He was just sat there arms folded hunched over looking like he really didn't want to be there. Then he started playing with his phone while Mario was talking. What was hilarious was seeing Klien trying to concentrate on Mario but getting distracted ever more by what Kub was doing :D

  • Steven Roy20/06/2009 at 21:56

Not really, weights show vet's lap was stunning, and we found out that Kubica is the grumpiest person in F1.

I saw the weights. Can't wait for the Webber fans next excuse why the great qualifier is 8 zip down to Vettel even with a 7 kg advantage. People make decisions about drivers based on no information so often

I'd just had the pic with Grosjean when Tim says "Scott, look..." I look and it's only Fernando funking Alonso walking out the garage! Tim introduced me and got the photographer to take a pic of me with him :D

I love the use of the word 'funking' here - I can imagine 'Nando just groovin' along the paddock when you bump into him.

I don't know why this bottle of mineral water has on it "An English natural mineral water of exceptional taste" What taste? It just tastes like....well, water! Why try and advertise a water of "exceptional taste" when all water, bottled or from a tap, tastes the fricking same!

    Right, rant over... :P

  • RG - Fisi20/06/2009 at 22:21

Is it the law on here we have to say fricking now?

Pure water is supposedly unpalatable, the minerals make it the liquid we all know

If it is mineral water it comes out of the ground and picks up the taste from the rocks and stuff

As someone who drinks a lot of bottled water, I have to say my palate can pick up the nuances of each brand ;)

  • RG - Fisi20/06/2009 at 22:22

It is also bad for you. If you drink de-ionised or de-mineralised water it removes ions from your body

Apart from that documentary about drilling for oil in the north sea, which was excellent too ;)

I read they are racing a steam train, using an old Jag.

Ooh, one thing before I go - driver signings. Would they be at the team stands in the F1 Village? Just asking since I would like to get some signed stuff and pics of drivers, hence why I'm getting there for half 9 instead of quarter past 11 tomorrow.

  • lou20/06/2009 at 22:54

brilliant :) that's good news. i took part in a sort of pub quiz thing this evening. our team felt very unintelligent by the end. to our defence we were the youngest table, and we did great in most of the rounds, except the flag round, and the random round. there wasn't a single f1 question though, i was very disappointed.

has everyone had a good evening?

it's cause it's like an hour or two from my house.. it's not very important in the grand scale of things, but after a round that was based on maths it pleased me :)

quick shout out to christine who was on bbc tees radio again earlier today. i was banned from listening in, and it doesn't appear to be on iplayer yet, so i have no idea how she insulted me this time.

She was on the radio again?

  • me21/06/2009 at 00:08

yeah, i missed it though cause my laptop was next to the phone and i was banished.

i kinda think rob has that one down.

what i love about it though is with lisa and christine, you have two females discussing formula 1, without any male interaction. i don't know if i've come across too much of that before.

if lou / kathi / jackie et al were more confident, we could do something similar here and i could listen in from the other room. one day maybe.

  • Nick21/06/2009 at 00:21

I don't know if it is because Christine is the face of Sidepodcast or not but the male:frmale ratio here is totally unlike any F1 or racing site I have ever seen. Even this week we have had several new female commenters where most sites are foing well to get 3 or 4 a year

  • me21/06/2009 at 00:23

actually, that's a good question. i really have no clue. what i should've said was:

That is very true, i think it also helps that the structure of this site makes it a lot more friendly than a forum, and more structured to an extent than a chat room.

  • Pat W21/06/2009 at 00:29

Motorsport has this stigma of being male-dominated, but in reality that's only the drivers and mechanics, etc. Take a look at the grandstands at any racing event, F1 or not. And the marshal posts too.

if lou / kathi / jackie et al were more confident, we could do something similar here and i could listen in from the other room. one day maybe.

I don't know if I'm being controversial by asking... why? Isn't that even more sexist? "let's let the girls have their own chat" If we're going for inclusion for all, put everyone in together.

    Night Nick

Even this week we have had several new female commenters where most sites are foing well to get 3 or 4 a year

that is a fine point. i don't know either.

what's slightly frustrating, is that alia, lpg, amy and everyone else previously mentioned, have all come on the show and all been great. but encouraging a return visit is nigh on impossible.

every person on the "next weeks panelists" list is male.

Perhaps I'm being naive but I thought that was more down to personality than gender.

also a fair point. but as i said a second ago, i liked the radio chat, because it lacked the male aspect. it seemed somehow more laid back.

I can see some value in it. Some of the male members of the site myself include have very strong opinions and tend to express them forcefully at times. There have been shows where Gavin and I in particular have interupted someone to give our opinion and some of the women on the show have backed off as a result. it would be interesting if there were enough of them to have an all gemale sidepodpanel or sidepodchat.

I think we need an all female panel in the next series. It would be good for the first or second show.

That's a good idea, maybe Mr C can score and Christine can take part too

you're not missing anything, you're correct. and i was merely using it as an example.

here's the thing. i would absolutley listen to an all female formula chat show. i would put time aside to listen. in part because there isn't such a thing at the moment.

apologies if that comes across wrong or offends anyone, that's not the intention at all.

    i'm up for that.

Maybe you two can chat about it and see how Christine feels. Possibly a blog post to sow some seeds before S3 of SidepodPanel begins
