Thankfully it is Friday once more, and not only does that mean that Thursday has passed, but Free Practice gets underway in just a few short hours. As ever, the politics continues to cast a shadow over it all, as does the fact that this is Silverstone's last Grand Prix, but we won't let it get us down. Here are some upbeat F1 stories:

  1. Massa is confident that Ferrari will get a win this season. I don't know where he gets his optimism from, but I want some! Apparently the team have got to grips with whatever was wrong with the car in Turkey, and want to return to Monaco style podium performance.
  2. Jenson Button says he's not feeling the pressure of his home Grand Prix, despite the fact that he wants to do well in front of the fans, he's expecting a big crowd, and it's Silverstone's last race for what might be ages and ages. Um, no pressure at all!
  3. And in circuit news, the fact that Silverstone is off Bernie's Christmas Card list, and Donington faces trouble at every turn, the future of the British GP has seemed quite shaky. Lewis Hamilton has said that he will do everything in his power to help keep the race, though, because according to the champ, motorsport just wouldn't be the same without it.

There we go, some kind of good stories to get your Friday going. They were the best I could find, I'm afraid. Never mind, Free Practice soon! See you in the comments.

I'm guessing this won't be the last we'll hear in this saga. I'm expecting Mosley to cave in sooner or late. He's got to. Surely eh?

Was interesting asking the Red Bull folks their stance. "We're not in in it..." ask another, "We're in it..." oh.

    Here we go!

Max is going to have a Connery. I mean coronary. They just trumped what he Bernie did on Silverstone Friday last year. The gloves are off.

  • lou18/06/2009 at 23:13

I can't believe it actually happened!

and suddenly within seconds we are all interested in f1 politics again lol :)

  • Christine18/06/2009 at 23:13

All I want to know is if Bernie is going with them. Do I need to change the name of F1 Minute or not? :)

  • Scott Woodwiss18/06/2009 at 23:14

    OH. MY. GOD!

    It's happening! It's really happening!

So this means that 5 of these new teams will get slots on the grid next season. Do you think Lola pulled their F1 effort too soon? :D

  • Flibster18/06/2009 at 23:14

All I want to know is if Bernie is going with them.

    Oh I hope not.

Would do the poison dwarf good to lose his cash cow for a while. :D

Do we care with Ferrari, Mclaren, Brawn, BMW and the others not being in F1?

  • Scott Woodwiss18/06/2009 at 23:15

Right, for a start - what circuits?

Monaco said they'd go with the teams, so that's in. What about Silverstone? It could be saved after all! :D

  • Paul18/06/2009 at 23:15

    Questions, questions.

Where do Williams head? What will they do this weekend?

    Pringles or chips?

  • Nick18/06/2009 at 23:15

So this means that 5 of these new teams will get slots on the grid next season. Do you think Lola pulled their F1 effort too soon? :D

They'll stick to F1 I would have thought.

    :)

  • lou18/06/2009 at 23:16

Bernie will follow the money. CVC will be on beta blockers now

so if bernie goes with them.... will it still be f1? will williams join them? will Max take the hint and run for the hills? oooo so many questions! i'm never going to get to sleep tonight now...

  • Scott Woodwiss18/06/2009 at 23:16

And what to call it? GP1? And would the races be called Grand Prix's still?

  • Steven Roy18/06/2009 at 23:17

He must have seen it coming, he's far too good at politics to not have

I doubt it. He thought his dodgy entry list and other nonsense was going to split FOTA instead it just annoyed him.

One note of caution. Just because we have an announcement doesn't mean there will be a breakaway.

  • me18/06/2009 at 23:17

joe and nick, can we jump ya onto the 19th thread pls. just to save us moving the convo later. ta.

  • Paul Convery18/06/2009 at 23:17

Ok, did that actually just happen or did I fall asleep and this is some sort of dream?

  • Paul18/06/2009 at 23:17

And what to call it? GP1? And would the races be called Grand Prix's still?

I think they can use Grand Prix, but maybe not F1

  • Nick18/06/2009 at 23:17

And what to call it? GP1? And would the races be called Grand Prix's still?

They have to be, the FIA cant really lay claim to that, its too generic

  • Nick18/06/2009 at 23:17

joe and nick, can we jump ya onto the 19th thread pls. just to save us moving the convo later. ta.

    sorry!

  • Christine18/06/2009 at 23:18

But it is something more than: Dear Max - No. Signed, FOTA.

Dear FOTA - No. Signed Max.

  • Scott Woodwiss18/06/2009 at 23:18

FOTA World GP Championship sounds cool, maybe?

  • Nick18/06/2009 at 23:19

One note of caution. Just because we have an announcement doesn't mean there will be a breakaway.

Verry true, come to think of it I wrote... ;)

But its too exciting not to get excited!

  • Steven Roy18/06/2009 at 23:19

Do we care with Ferrari, Mclaren, Brawn, BMW and the others not being in F1?

They weren't at Le Mans either but we watched 24 hours of that. On thi site last year we saw about 27 hours of F1 racing but we saw 46 hours of sportscar racing at Le Mans / Petit and Sebring

  • Flibster18/06/2009 at 23:19

Where do Williams head? What will they do this weekend?

    Pringles or chips?

I suppose it would give them a 10:1 shot at the title in 2010...

  • Steven Roy18/06/2009 at 23:19

Right, for a start - what circuits?

Monaco said they'd go with the teams, so that's in. What about Silverstone? It could be saved after all! :D

If there is a breakaway we will have Silverstone, Magny Cours, Imola etc etc

  • Scott Woodwiss18/06/2009 at 23:19

More importantly - what would this mean for SPC? Do we stick with F1 or go with FOTA? Decisions decisions.

OR is that sabbatical going to come into effect?

    Tara.

They sit tight knowing both sides want them. People say they wouldn't want to play poker with Bernie but I would rather play with him than Frank. He got millions not to give Button a drive. He will make a profit from this dispute whatever he does. He is an F1 hedge fund

  • Steven Roy18/06/2009 at 23:30

This means any announcement Max or Bernie were planning to make at Silverstone has been blown out of the water and they will be asleep now and unable to respond until the papers are printed. I love F1 politics.

  • Flibster18/06/2009 at 23:30

It's very interesting that they annouced this on Thursday evening. Gives the FIA enough time to come up with a counter offer and for the teams to still get them into F1 in 2010 rather that FOTAGPF1 or whatever it's going to be called unconditionally.

However - does anyone else have an image of Max sitting in a comfy chair with a cup of Horlicks, turning on the news and sending a spray of hot horlicks across the room in shock - running through their mind at the moment? :D

  • Nick18/06/2009 at 23:30

He cares. He is up for election in a few months time and if he loses all the big names in F1, all the manufacturers who he recruited and the Monaco GP he is going to get slaughtered. His reputation will be toast and he won't be able to turn it round. I just love that he is suffering.

  • Joe18/06/2009 at 23:35

Lol Lola. I was astounded when I read about them withdrawing their 2010 entry, I really couldn't understand it considering there may have been a spot or two up for grabs.

And now.......ahahahahahaha..........ahahahah.............aahaha.....ahaha, you guys slay me! Funniest moment of the year, right here, right now.

I wonder though. FOTA are walking away, that strengthens Max's FIA power base, and increases his chances of staying. This ain't over...

  • Steven Roy18/06/2009 at 23:37

There is a long way to go yet. Bernie threatened to set up a breakaway nearly 30 years ago assisted by his lawyer. It didn't happen.

  • Paul Convery18/06/2009 at 23:38

Lol Lola. I was astounded when I read about them withdrawing their 2010 entry, I really couldn't understand it considering there may have been a spot or two up for grabs.

Lola may off pulled out though to be able to join the breakaway series, if they stayed on the reserve list they would of been stuck in F1 if a breakaway does happen

  • Christine18/06/2009 at 23:38

    So does he though.... ewwww....

    STOP IT.

  • Nick18/06/2009 at 23:38

I wonder though. FOTA are walking away, that strengthens Max's FIA power base, and increases his chances of staying. This ain't over...

Not really a strenghtening; the teams dont vote in the FIA elections, so he will have to explain how the FIA's premier championships are all breaking away

  • Steven Roy18/06/2009 at 23:38

I wonder though. FOTA are walking away, that strengthens Max's FIA power base, and increases his chances of staying. This ain't over...

THis weakens him. They may make little money form F1 since he kindly gave that to Bernie in return for a substantial bung - allegedly but the FIA blazers like their day out in Monaco and the other major events.

  • Scott Woodwiss18/06/2009 at 23:39

So in terms of a race calendar, here's some of what I'd like to see, in no particular order:

    Monaco GP - Monte Carlo

    Canadian GP - Montreal

US GP - Road America, Laguna Seca or Indy

    British GP - Silverstone

French GP - Magny-Cours or Paul Ricard

San Marino/ Italian GP - Imola

    Portuguese GP - Portimao

    Argentine GP - San Luis

German GP - Hockenheim or Nurburgring

Spanish GP - Jerez or Valencia (Ricardo Tormo)

    Qatar GP - Doha

    Any others?

    Yes. What about sunny Aus?

  • Amy18/06/2009 at 23:40

Boo I moved to Melbourne for the F1 and now its dead. BOO.

  • Scott Woodwiss18/06/2009 at 23:40

    Eastern Creek or Phillip Island?

  • Nick18/06/2009 at 23:41

    Abu Dhabi

    Australia Melbourne or surfers

    Spa

And not laguna seca, F1 would ruin that track

  • Paul18/06/2009 at 23:41

    Eastern Creek or Phillip Island?

Phillip Island would be awesome, but it wouldn't happen.

    Adelaide or Melboune only.

  • Amy18/06/2009 at 23:43

    Adelaide or Melboune only.

MELBOURNE ONLY. I can't afford to move again ;)

  • Steven Roy18/06/2009 at 23:43

    Any others?

There are two F1 standard tracke in Germany that can't make F1 pay. Then Estoril, Vallelunga in Italy that belongs to Ferrari,

  • Nick18/06/2009 at 23:43

MELBOURNE ONLY. I can't afford to move again ;)

What about Surfers, its sunnier and friendlier up there ;)

    Adelaide

  • Steven Roy18/06/2009 at 23:44

It's not over yet. Besides this will encourage you to move to Finland

  • rowley18/06/2009 at 23:44

    What about Zandvoort.

If they have enough noise days.

  • Paul18/06/2009 at 23:45

What about Surfers, its sunnier and friendlier up there ;)

Hmmm. Would be better than A1GP I agree

  • Amy18/06/2009 at 23:45

I know, maybe I'm too cynical but I can't see it happening. I see this as another 'hey Max, we're serious, ball is in your court now' thing.

  • Steven Roy18/06/2009 at 23:45

Laguna isn't safe for F1. Best for now to look at F1 licensed tracks

  • Amy18/06/2009 at 23:53

    Why?

because this uncertainty is ridiculous for everyone involved.

  • Lukeh18/06/2009 at 23:54

Do you think you could claim for sick leave in f1 via being sick of the politics?

  • lou18/06/2009 at 23:55

because this uncertainty is ridiculous for everyone involved.

Alonso has already said he'd follow the break away, and i should think the other drivers of the FOTA teams will too, they'll be alright ;)

  • Lukeh19/06/2009 at 00:12

This F1/FOTA/FIA stuff really is the biggest. bowl. of spaghetti ever. Everythings all stranded together and its all a big mess trying to sort it out. I feel like a meatball surrounded by madness.

Thousands of contracts needing to be verified. Data goes into Excel, spreadsheet gets sent to the company who do something else with it. Probably verify it again.

well the data goes into a webform that generates a spreadsheet, and they're divided by date and by state so they're not toooo big.

  • lou19/06/2009 at 00:55

*sigh* it's 2am and i need to be up at 6:30 :'( i think i need to try and get some sleep, no matter how hard that may be. I have lots of frees tomorrow and little work, so i'll be around to get some updates on practice i should think. night all! x

they say that any publicity is good - and even in the last 20 mins we have seen tweets about webber appearing on Aussie AM radio. That doesnt even happen during the AGP!

Maybe, but to be honest, its looked like we were going to lose it every year lately, and it really is for the better of the sport! Max was running it into the ground. more column inches dedicated to politics and who is spanking who (not on track unfortunately)................. lets get back to the racing at tracks that people actually like!

  • Journeyer19/06/2009 at 01:06

You'll probably have it in some shape or form. If Bernie's not with them, you'll probably have it in Adelaide. If Bernie's with them, they're staying in Melbourne.

I would stick my neck out so state that next year we will be watching

The Coca-Cola Big Prize Championship, or something very similar. (With races at Silverstone and Montreal, yeah!!)

Good luck to them, this has gone on far too long (since before the CA) and I personally am relieved to draw a line under the fiasco of 'Management Change.'

Now I'm looking forward to seeing Ron Dennis back at the trackside. One huge one in the eye for the outgoing governing body !!!

  • Steven Roy19/06/2009 at 03:38

Ron will be happy tonight. It was him who insisted deMontezemolo should head FOTA to lock Ferrari in. So Ron's briliant political move has Max the uber politician over a barrel.

  • coucou-banana19/06/2009 at 03:56

And I cannot think of a finer man to chair the necessary talks for what, for me at least, is the most exciting developement this millenium. Forcing Ron out was dangerous and has born fruit.

Also I read on column recently that Jean Todt did a great job keeping Mosley and deMontezmolo apart. And so many other small and not so small contributers to the situation, this was inevitable.

It's fantastic that racing is going to be back in the hands of racers, I am so glad that we will get back to the business of racing.

Yes there will be a lot of work to get things up and running for next year, but I cannot believe a bunch of very canny business men would embark on something so big without a feasiblity study.

  • JUNO19/06/2009 at 04:23

I was here for the 24h, and said I'd come back, I'm back. My view is like others have said, now we have more racing to watch. And what are you all still doing up? Isn't it like 5am there?

  • Journeyer19/06/2009 at 04:25

Also I read on column recently that Jean Todt did a great job keeping Mosley and deMontezemolo apart. And so many other small and not so small contributers to the situation, this was inevitable.

Now that you bring up Mr. Todt, I'm curious to see what part he'll play in this, if at all. It's hard for me to believe he'll just settle down to a quiet family life with Michelle Yeoh...

It's fantastic that racing is going to be back in the hands of racers, I am so glad that we will get back to the business of racing.

Yes there will be a lot of work to get things up and running for next year, but I cannot believe a bunch of very canny business men would embark on something so big without a feasibility study.

I'd think they already conducted some sort of feasibility study back then as the GPMA. Even if they haven't, it's just a matter of getting the right people involved. Networking, networking, networking.

FOTA is in a very strong position as far as I can tell. I am wary of another CART/IRL type split but it seems FOTA is very prepared for this. Only question is whether they can put it all together in a bit more than 6 months.

  • Journeyer19/06/2009 at 04:29

As Steven and Mr C said, this isn't a split - after all, almost everyone's jumping off the ship. And if my suspicion is correct, teams like Lola may join them too...

The big question is time. There's a lot of work to do, and some lawsuits probably to settle. But as long as they have the circuits and the broadcasters, I'm pretty confident it will push through.

  • coucou-banana19/06/2009 at 04:30

Hey guys here is a lovely thought for the weekend. This won't be the last Silverstone. It's a shame for Donnington and the BBC because they are locked into long contracts.

I too drew the Lola conclusion

  • Journeyer19/06/2009 at 04:32

Hey guys here is a lovely thought for the weekend. This won't be the last Silverstone. It's a shame for Donington and the BBC because they are locked into long contracts.

Indeed - the FOTA championship will definitely have Silverstone.

As for the BBC, I'm pretty certain they will ask Bernie for a review of their contract. 8 teams leaving must have at least some sort of impact. But if Bernie jumps ship too (and I suspect he will), all the broadcasters who have contracts with him will follow suit.

  • Corey19/06/2009 at 04:32

Yeah now thought of that. They withdrew their application so maybe we will see Lola added to the list of teams.

  • Paul19/06/2009 at 04:33

    I've been wondering....

Who is going to police the FOTA series? They are all good friends now, but what happens when someone brings in a dominant car, with double-diffuser, flexi wings or whatever? They need an independent governing body. It's not going to be a one-make series like IRL, so things could get messy.

  • coucou-banana19/06/2009 at 04:34

    It's always been messy

  • Paul19/06/2009 at 04:36

    It's always been messy

True, but for good or bad, someone had the final say. Who will it be now, Ferrari?

  • Corey19/06/2009 at 04:37

Well they did say they will have transparent government I just dont know how they will implement it and the day to day running of the championship

    .

  • Journeyer19/06/2009 at 04:38

Steven Roy said that, believe it or not, the FIA will still have to accredit them. So the teams may still decide to go to them for rulings on this or whatnot. Of course the main difference is that with a FOTA championship, they'd only approach the FIA when they need them, and not have them interfere in day to day affairs.

If they don't like that option, there are a number of automotive bodies that are anti-Max (like Nick Craw's AAA) that they can decide to work with.

This should've one of the first topics FOTA had in considering a breakaway. They've probably already sorted this out - but with who?

  • Paul19/06/2009 at 04:47

This should've one of the first topics FOTA had in considering a breakaway. They've probably already sorted this out - but with who?

It might be just a board of the FOTA members. I will be waiting for the first big controversy, and I bet it won't be long to wait.

  • Journeyer19/06/2009 at 04:52

What I also want to see tomorrow is who gets published on the list.

I'm guessing we'll get Williams, Force India, Ferrari, RBR, STR, USF1, Manor, Campos, Prodrive, Lotus/Litespeed, Superfund, Brabham, and... who else? Hmmm.

  • coucou-banana19/06/2009 at 04:53

Yeah, what about Williams? I would hate to see Frank get f-ed over.

    And Force India too

Steven said they'll be able to join the FOTA Championship once everything is settled over there. He's right in that they're better staying put until this breakaway becomes a reality.

  • Journeyer19/06/2009 at 04:55

It will be interesting to see. Especially if Ferrari, RBR and STR are in or out.

They'll be in. Max wants to keep them in an attempt to kill the breakaway before it's even started.

  • Paul19/06/2009 at 04:56

Yeah, what about Williams? I would hate to see Frank get f-ed over.

That will be VERY interesting. :D

    Where?

  • Journeyer19/06/2009 at 05:30

BBC. Listening to Radio 1 now.

    Ah, right.

  • Paul19/06/2009 at 05:33

Unsupprisingly, it hardly rate a mention in Oz. Buried below news of a football player's sore back. Still, according to the ABC:

"Formula One has been thrown into disarray days ahead of the British Grand Prix"

    *switches to BBC web site*

It's not the top headline, but it's on the frontpage.

  • Journeyer19/06/2009 at 05:38

Chris Moyles will be live from Silverstone!

only Carrie, apparently. But still, they sent someone there... That's a pretty big step forward.

  • Journeyer19/06/2009 at 06:10

Chris Moyles wants to buy Formula2.com.

    Riiiight, then...

I wish they actually did that, if only to annoy Max... Heheh! ;)

  • Journeyer19/06/2009 at 06:30

Amy, Carrie from Chris Moyles had a day with Heikki - and she's gushing! :D

  • James19/06/2009 at 07:22

So in terms of a race calendar, here’s some of what I’d like to see, in no particular order:

    Monaco GP – Monte Carlo

    Canadian GP – Montreal

US GP – Road America, Laguna Seca or Indy

    British GP – Silverstone

French GP – Magny-Cours or Paul Ricard

San Marino/ Italian GP – Imola

    Portuguese GP – Portimao

    Argentine GP – San Luis

German GP – Hockenheim or Nurburgring

Spanish GP – Jerez or Valencia (Ricardo Tormo)

    Qatar GP – Doha

    Any others?

I believe Monza's contract actually expires this year so I'm sure we can add that to the list :)

  • Amy19/06/2009 at 07:30

  • Journeyer19/06/2009 at 15:10

Thats it then, F1 is as we know it is over

On the contrary, this might keep F1 alive... at the price of Max Mosley. FOTA will be racing one way or the other - with Max's decision to delay publishing the entry list, the new entrants might not be able to. Who would have the power in the end, then?

  • Steven Roy19/06/2009 at 15:10

oooo lucky Mr & Mrs C....are they guests for the full weekend ?

    Only today

  • Bassano Clapper19/06/2009 at 15:10

In the pits they met and spoke to Rob Smedley, Joe and Ted...

I wonder if Christine gets asked about "Felipe Baby"?

  • Christine19/06/2009 at 15:11

I guess they didn't meet Scott? They said they'd talk to Joe later - that might be our Aside for this weekend. :D

Nah. We're about to leave now. Aside with Joe will be a regular chat by Skype. Hopefully later, but it all depends.

  • Flibster19/06/2009 at 15:11

eh.......can't be bothered. You just watch your mouth from now on :D

    WOOHOO!

I can get away with anything.... I am Max Mosley!

  • Steven Roy19/06/2009 at 15:11

I have no idea when they found out that they were going to Silverstone but they didn't know at 2am this morning they were going

  • Bassano Clapper19/06/2009 at 15:12

I can get away with anything.... I am Max Mosley!

    Hopefully, without the costumes ;)

  • Steven Roy19/06/2009 at 15:12

I wonder if Christine gets asked about "Felipe Baby"?

She was speaking to Rob about it

  • Journeyer19/06/2009 at 15:12

Nah. We're about to leave now. Aside with Joe will be a regular chat by Skype. Hopefully later, but it all depends.

Awww. But hey - all is good. :D

  • Steven Roy19/06/2009 at 15:12

I notice Christine popped up as soon as Flibster left the naughty step

  • Flibster19/06/2009 at 15:12

    Hopefully, without the costumes ;)

Does a red and white checked gingham dress and army boots count?

  • Bassano Clapper19/06/2009 at 15:13

Does a red and white checked gingham dress and army boots count?

Max probably has those, so yes :D

  • Flibster19/06/2009 at 15:14

Max probably has those, so yes :D

    Damn....

  • Bassano Clapper19/06/2009 at 15:14

    Cool

  • RG19/06/2009 at 15:15

You get any pics of Timo?

  • Steven Roy19/06/2009 at 15:15

I hate that the FIA put out the statement so early. Couldn't they have let the anticipation build rather than slipping a note under the door.

  • Journeyer19/06/2009 at 15:15

Joe says that apparently Prodrive have dropped their bid too.

No wonder Max sued - he has no other alternative but to.

  • Bassano Clapper19/06/2009 at 15:16

Joe says that apparently Prodrive have dropped their bid too.

Doubt they'll be the last to withdraw their application. At this rate Williams will be champions of... something at the end of next year

  • karen19/06/2009 at 15:17

They're losing a grip on it - it seems that Max is slowly, but surely, going down.

  • Rachel19/06/2009 at 15:19

They're losing a grip on it - it seems that Max is slowly, but surely, going down.

He'll probably want to go out with a bang, though, and I can't see that being very good for F1.

  • Journeyer19/06/2009 at 15:20

He'll probably want to go out with a bang, though, and I can't see that being very good for F1.

It'll be interesting to see how it plays out in next week's WMSC meeting. Have FOTA done their homework on the political side and gathered allies in the FIA?

  • Journeyer19/06/2009 at 15:21

Doubt they'll be the last to withdraw their application. At this rate Williams will be champions of... something at the end of next year

    I like this comment - a lot.

Litespeed have dropped the Lotus name. Max will be so happy

  • Journeyer19/06/2009 at 15:22

Litespeed have dropped the Lotus name. Max will be so happy

:D He should be happy they haven't withdrawn their bid - yet.

  • me19/06/2009 at 15:22

You get any pics of Timo?

nope. there's no toyota stand this year.

we stood next to him, but pics weren't appropriate.

  • Journeyer19/06/2009 at 15:22

Litespeed have dropped the Lotus name. Max will be so happy

I thought they had the consent of Team Lotus? Whatever happened to that...?

  • me19/06/2009 at 15:22

Litespeed have dropped the Lotus name. Max will be so happy

    did they give a reason?

  • Rachel19/06/2009 at 15:23

It'll be interesting to see how it plays out in next week's WMSC meeting. Have FOTA done their homework on the political side and gathered allies in the FIA?

They have to have some, I'm sure I heard some rumours about LDM standing for the FIA Presidency when Max was going to step down in October, so he must have some support there. Not sure how much though.

  • Bassano Clapper19/06/2009 at 15:24

I thought they had the consent of Team Lotus? Whatever happened to that...?

The consent of someone but not the Team, I think

  • Journeyer19/06/2009 at 15:24

They have to have some, I'm sure I heard some rumours about LDM standing for the FIA Presidency when Max was going to step down in October, so he must have some support there. Not sure how much though.

Hmmm... that would be a huge conflict of interest. I don't see LDM taking the spot. But Jean Todt...? Now there's a name we haven't heard from amidst all this...

  • Bassano Clapper19/06/2009 at 15:25

Methinks after Max's decision to not publish an entry list today, we're not gonna get that far.

  • Alex Andronov19/06/2009 at 15:30

  • Rachel19/06/2009 at 15:31

Hmmm... that would be a huge conflict of interest. I don't see LDM taking the spot. But Jean Todt...? Now there's a name we haven't heard from amidst all this...

He retired/resigned because he didn't get on with LDM though, didn't he, so I can't see why he would want to get involved.

  • Alex Andronov19/06/2009 at 15:31

I got a bit confused in all of the excitement

You see Katherine never upgraded to a 3G phone... So she was out of contract. So she went and upgraded today. I paid for the upgrade and now we're swapping phones. So she'll have a 3G and I'll have the 3G S.

This was quite a bit cheaper than the > £500 they wanted for me to upgrade.

  • Steven Roy19/06/2009 at 15:32

    did they give a reason?

It is just a line in Joe's item saying they are dropping it. No reasons

  • Alex Andronov19/06/2009 at 15:32

    haha, why restore now?

The restore is copying the backup of the old phone on to the new one... So I can take all my old data and music etc.

  • Flibster19/06/2009 at 15:32

Now there's a name we haven't heard from amidst all this...

    Dennis?

    Stoddart? :D

My guess and it has been for weeks is that Nick Craw will be the bext president

  • Steven Roy19/06/2009 at 15:33

The consent of someone but not the Team, I think

David Hunt (James's little brother) owns the Team Lotus names

  • Alex Andronov19/06/2009 at 15:33

Cool, am waiting for the queues to die down. Probably next month

According to Katherine in Carphone Warehouse no queue!

Not a very popular move to disadvantage all of the early adopters like that.

  • Steven Roy19/06/2009 at 15:34

Hmmm... that would be a huge conflict of interest. I don't see LDM taking the spot. But Jean Todt...? Now there's a name we haven't heard from amidst all this...

He was Max#s choice as successor. No way is he gettingthe job now

  • Flibster19/06/2009 at 15:34

    Yup.

  • Journeyer19/06/2009 at 15:34

My guess and it has been for weeks is that Nick Craw will be the bext president

Craw is an interesting name to come out... Perhaps we should also mention Michel Boeri of the ACM. I'd like his chances too.

  • Bassano Clapper19/06/2009 at 15:35

According to Katherine in Carphone Warehouse no queue!

He is part of the FOTA deal. He doesn't need the hassle of running the FIA

  • Rachel19/06/2009 at 15:41

There won't be a breakaway. The FIA doesn't have enough teams without FOTA, it seems.

  • Scott in Italy19/06/2009 at 16:24

cool thing on the bbc F1 website about what goes on during a pit stop and the video works for international people. essentially a bank of cameras to photograph a mock pit stop then they "3D-erise" it and can see .. stuff.

Radio 5 Live F1 show coming up

  • Alex Andronov19/06/2009 at 18:01

    Is it... snappier?

I have just sent a video of me taken with it to drop.io

    evening all ...

I have just sent a video of me taken with it to drop.io

    WOW!

  • Alison19/06/2009 at 18:02

Btw I can't believe I failed to notice the F1 world has imploded. I just heard about it on radio 4 which is a strange state of affairs when you're signed onto an F1 website! I'm quite impressed at the flowery status of this thread :)

  • Alex Andronov19/06/2009 at 18:02

    WOW!

e-mailing video! It took about 30 seconds to upload.

  • Bassano Clapper19/06/2009 at 18:02

    Wow:

Troubled sports broadcaster Setanta has failed to pay the latest chunk of the £30m it owes the English Premier League, and will now lose the rights

    Not good for Setanta's future

Flowery is a very nice euphemism to use at this point. ;)

Whaaaat?? That's well over my head

  • Journeyer19/06/2009 at 18:03

Troubled sports broadcaster Setanta has failed to pay the latest chunk of the £30m it owes the English Premier League, and will now lose the rights

    But lose it to who?

    Not good for Setanta's future

More like the final nail in the coffin. But they are still ripe for a takeover. I would've assumed ESPN, but they've denied any interest... for the moment, anyway.

  • Steven Roy19/06/2009 at 18:03

    Hi Karen

  • Journeyer19/06/2009 at 18:04

Whaaaat?? That's well over my head

    :D

A euphemism is a... nicer way of saying certain things. Like saying 'body' rather than 'corpse', or saying 'passed away' rather than 'died'.

  • karen19/06/2009 at 18:04

arghh MM....the arrogance of the man !

You didn't notice?? You should have been here last night when it all went bang. Mr C dragged Christine out of bed to hear all about it

  • Journeyer19/06/2009 at 18:05

arghh MM....the arrogance of the man !

More like delusion at this point... he's ignoring the other FIA entries, suing FOTA, contradicting Bernie about Silverstone, and even contradicting himself at times...

  • Alison19/06/2009 at 18:05

A euphemism is a... nicer way of saying certain things. Like saying 'body' rather than 'corpse', or saying 'passed away' rather than 'died'.

No no no. I know what a euphamism is. I understand what you're saying now. I thought you were making fun of me again :(

  • Steven Roy19/06/2009 at 18:06

    Not good for Setanta's future

Setanta announce last week that it was in deep doodoo financially. Someone tried to put a bid together to buy them but it collapsed.

Sounds like you need Cupcake News?

The man who won MasterChef (last year? not sure as I don't watch it) is opening a restaurant in the town I grew up in, 7 miles from here. It opens tomorrow. The kitchen porter wants to cook so he set her the task of making cupcakes. :-)

Not too surprised - he lost to Hewitt and Wawrinka - who he shouldn't have had too much difficulty with normally.

    Hey Mr Wolf

  • Christine19/06/2009 at 18:14

    Noooooo! But he's my favourite!!

Aww, last year's final was the best match ever. Boo for not getting a repeat.

  • Steven Roy19/06/2009 at 18:15

Imagine if she hadn't been woken for it. Mr C would have had to explain this morning that FOTA have a breakaway and they had tickets for Silverstone. I bet if he had Christine would have thought he had done something really bad and was trying to cover it u.

  • Journeyer19/06/2009 at 18:15

Aww, last year's final was the best match ever. Boo for not getting a repeat.

Even if Nadal played, he was never going to make it back to the final.

That said, that leaves the door open for Andy Murray - who might just be Amy's worst enemy. The pressure on Murray to win will be intense, though - possibly greater even than the pressure Tim Henman felt.

  • Christine19/06/2009 at 18:16

  • Scott in Italy19/06/2009 at 18:32

essentially this is ferrari saying today that they don't wish to make a comment after FIA made their statement. they figure their statement from the 15 of June was good enough to do with the rules, their contract with FIA, and the right to veto.

  • RG19/06/2009 at 18:33

    He leaves tomorrow morning.

  • Alison19/06/2009 at 18:40

I'll miss Nelson when he goes. He does provide entertainment.

I feel really sorry for him. I don't think he's been that pants the last couple of races.

  • Lukeh19/06/2009 at 18:40

Has anyone mentioned the new F12009 screenshots for the Wii?

  • RG19/06/2009 at 18:40

Nah, you have to finish a lot of races to be champion

To be fair to him, he's only retired twice. And one of them wasn't his fault

  • RG19/06/2009 at 18:40

It doesn't say the format but I'm 99% sure thats the Wii, it looks a little better than the last we saw of it but nothing breathtaking. Wii isn't notorious for being graphically amazing so I just want to play it to be fair :D

He's not alone though. How many races did it take Kovalainen to complete a racing lap??

    Grrrr!

Aye. I suspect the PSP version will probably be of similar quality.

    9. But thats beside the point...

I still don't understand how Lorenzo could overtake him on the straight and Rossi then overtook him by 10 metres on the outside under braking. That was insane. It is very like the situation with Gibernau. Rossi is getting inside Lorenz's head with some of the stuf he does. Gibernau had two or three seasons when he was close to Rossi then Rossi destroyed him to the point Gibernau walked away from the sport.

grazie. You can preface the question with a quote I saw in italian media that I think Nico was saying the f1 drivers are becoming like fashion models...

I'd ask them actually *what* they do as well. I want to hear answers about f1 drivers eating buckets of KFC...

I've got more because I went to bed 4+hrs before you.

Twitter took *ages* to catch up on. I usually do that first because it is usually quick and easy...

In order to save my battery so I can take pics and record sound clips, I'm gonna have to switch the 3G off so if there are going to be any updates through the day they will be scattered throughout to say the least. But as I said, big update when back at the hotel.

Very tired after the iPhone 3G S launch day. Just been catching up on the FOTA vs FIA news. Love Steven's comment about Max and CVC. Couldn't agree more.

  • me19/06/2009 at 20:36

I spent most of FP1 blogging, so I can be given free tickets next year :P

that's the spirit sir. i think everyone in the bus was some form of f1 blogger and there's a second bus load scheduled tomorrow.

people out there are listening, reading and paying attention. and they're doing that in many different countries too.

everyone needs a blog now. we don't want to hear any more excuses.

  • me19/06/2009 at 20:36

I hope Mr & Mrc C can show this site to their hosts to see the support the site has. Should be great exposure and promotion for them.

we demoed doohickey on the bus on the way into the circuit and again in the paddock. we had it running on both christine's g1 and my eeepc.

at all times it worked flawlessly and every comment that came in during those periods was very much appreciated by us and those watching.

  • Steven Roy19/06/2009 at 20:39

    Hi Lou and Andy

  • Kris19/06/2009 at 20:40

  • Kris19/06/2009 at 20:40

Doohickey really is a dream to use. I'm smitten.

Apart from me always forgetting to quote properly.... it needs a "guess what the hell Kris was supposed to click on" feature.

  • me19/06/2009 at 20:41

When will the minute and fp podcasts be live?

shelved for today. sorry. we're exhausted. we'll catch up tomorrow.

Usage: (Allison) Thank you all for your cable related advice! I have 15 metres of amazingness. All I need to do now is avoid falling over it...

You should totally write a blog about walking through cities in circles ends up being the best way to accidentaly find everything ;)

  • me19/06/2009 at 21:02

I have no idea when they found out that they were going to Silverstone but they didn't know at 2am this morning they were going

actually we sorta did. we knew thursday midday i think, which is still quite last minute.

we figured there wasn't much to be gained by discussing what might be.

we did bump into fraggle from the renault blog (who we interviewed about f1 testing last summer), but never spotted alia sadly.

  • lou19/06/2009 at 21:04

You should totally write a blog about walking through cities in circles ends up being the best way to accidentaly find everything ;)

Probably still sleeping from Le mans

  • me19/06/2009 at 21:08

Yup. And you apologized, anyway. I'm sure Mr C or Christine wouldn't take it against you. ;)

none at all. considering the on mass delurking, language has been pretty good all round, i'd say.

  • RG19/06/2009 at 21:08

    Like Ralf Schumacher.

    Ralf who?

  • Lukeh19/06/2009 at 21:09

    Ralf who?

I actually want to see BBC F1 do an article now on that. I hate it when photoshop makes me want more because of my damn imagination.

    Like Ralf Schumacher.

I was actually a fan off Ralf...

  • lou19/06/2009 at 21:11

this has probably been discussed, but does anyone know the reason for Rubens reverting back to his yellow brawn helmet today was? also i like the new nose on the red bull (yes i've only just been able to see photos from today ;) )

  • me19/06/2009 at 21:11

    I seem to remember:

    "Christine we need an iPhone"

    we do.

although my respect for the g1 has increased today. it's a very capable device.

  • Pat W19/06/2009 at 21:12

On a sidenote: what will Ollie call his breakaway series blog?

f1m is gonna be an issue too.

See this is why you should pick a neutral name. :-)

  • me19/06/2009 at 21:13

perhaps because it was portrait. Not many things expect portrait video.

    hadn't considered that.

    portrait video eh? hmmm.

  • Andy Taylor19/06/2009 at 21:14

although my respect for the g1 has increased today. it's a very capable device.

    tis true.

it doesn't have as many apps available (there's no f1 app for example). but the real-time gtalk app is arguably better than push notifications. also google latitude is installed, which i'm not sure has made it to the iphone yet?

    Evening all :D

So it turns out that sometimes I should watch the local news, they had an actual, exclusive interview with Bernie. linky, ~2 mins in for ~3 mins. He talks about not wanting to leave Silverstone, that he's been talking to the FOTA teams and his annoying phone kept going off.

  • me19/06/2009 at 21:53

He talks about not wanting to leave Silverstone,

    huh?

  • me19/06/2009 at 21:53

    evening btw :)

  • Pat W19/06/2009 at 21:56

    Evening all :D

    Hi.

So it turns out that sometimes I should watch the local news, they had an actual, exclusive interview with Bernie. linky, ~2 mins in for ~3 mins. He talks about not wanting to leave Silverstone, that he's been talking to the FOTA teams and his annoying phone kept going off.

Haven't time to watch (trying to catch up on all the reading!) but it seems like he's getting ready to organise a FOTA GP at Silverstone.

  • Rachel19/06/2009 at 21:58

    huh?

Honestly, he said he regretted that F1 was leaving and that they should 'talk to Donnington maybe they could sort something out'.

Local news, though, so Bernie was probably spinning for the audience. Donnington being in our local news region too, he couldn't exactly bad mouth either of them.

  • Andy Taylor19/06/2009 at 22:03

Honestly, he said he regretted that F1 was leaving and that they should 'talk to Donnington maybe they could sort something out'.

I loved the comment about wishing he had the mineral water contract for all the meetings being held by the teams. Classic.

  • Paul Convery19/06/2009 at 22:03

Bernie is I'm sure like most people looking at Donnington and wondering if it will be ready for next year, and consider the low turnout at places like Turkey he might think he can't afford to drop the British GP

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)19/06/2009 at 22:04

    Where is Gavin?

    Been here all week bro?

  • Steven Roy19/06/2009 at 22:05

Interesting. His ring tone is the good the bad and the ugly.

Clearly he expects Donington to fail and Silverstone to pick up the race.

The idea though that this is over trivial issues is nonsense.

  • me19/06/2009 at 22:05

This is a repeat of what happened 10 years ago. Brands Hatch was awarded a contract and never held a race. The race was held at Silverstone every year and Bernie got a default fee from Bands. That is all he was ever after from Donington. Donington was set up to fail

  • me19/06/2009 at 22:09

That is all he was ever after from Donington. Donington was set up to fail

and we've all been saying that since the very beginning. i just wasn't expecting bernie to come out with that.

  • Paul Convery19/06/2009 at 22:11

I'm not sure that Bernie set up Donington up to fail, I think he was keen to have some sort of change for the British GP. I think the people running Donington though where always set to fail, they had big plans but lacked the ability to carry them out

  • Steven Roy19/06/2009 at 22:16

This is exactly the same as the Brands deal. There is no way he ever wanted to go to Donington. He is a big mate of Tom Wheatcroft who owns Donington. If it succeeded Wheatcroft got a rental income from Gillett. If it fails he gets his circuit upgraded free of charge and a default payment when Gillett has to cancel his lease.

As well as all of that Bernie gets to wind up the BRDC

  • Chris19/06/2009 at 22:18

Evening all. Just caught up with the comments in the daily and seen Drop.io. Fun day for all it seems!

  • Rachel19/06/2009 at 22:19

And Bernie gets his money whatever happens.

  • Steven Roy19/06/2009 at 22:23

And Bernie gets his money whatever happens.

The bottom line is the bottom line. This way Silverstone pay for the race contract and Gillett pays the default fee on a 17 year contract. Can't beat double bubbe

Any word on the weather. Race day looks OK but qualifying I've seen various reports of cloudy to rainy... I guess the UK is like Washington state in a way where every time you blink the weather changes during the summer.

It's a genetic thing to do with X and Y chromosomes. Basically men only have one copy of the gene so if it's faulty it will be expressed. In a woman, there's another copy so a faulty one won't be expressed. It's pretty rare to inherit a faulty gene from both parents but it does happen.

  • Dan Brunell19/06/2009 at 22:40

'tis cones. It actually has various causes, but the most common sex-linked variety affects 1/20 men, and ~1/400 women. The Wikipedia article is actually pretty good if a little in depth.

  • Dan Brunell19/06/2009 at 22:48

can do. haven’t had chance to read any of it yet. any recommendations?

There are two. One is where he published an interview he did with Max Mosley circa 1991 where Max basically laid out the case to get rid of Jean-Marie Balestre where basically uses the same arguement as the teams are using now.

    LINK: http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2009/06/19/an-interview-from-may-1991/

The one I would post however is this one where he gives a pretty good explaination of what has been going on.

If not those, SpeedTV in their GP preview Q&A session did a really good summary.

    what is edit find?

In the menu on your browser. Click on edit in the menu selection where it says file edit Bookmarks etc. Once you click on edit a menu drops down then click on find. If you type a word in the box that appears it will take you to the first use of it and then you can step through all uses of it in sequence. So when someone uses a word like blurry that doesn't appear often you go straight to the comment you want.

ooh right. reading back through the comments can be fun though, but god has everyone been doing alot of talking today. I've just realised it may not be as easy as i thought to keep up to date with everything here when i'm on holiday for two weeks in august...

  • Journeyer20/06/2009 at 01:21

this has probably been discussed, but does anyone know the reason for Rubens reverting back to his yellow brawn helmet today was? also i like the new nose on the red bull (yes i've only just been able to see photos from today ;) )

I'm guessing Rubens switched back to yellow because Jenson is using a non-yellow helmet this weekend. Rubens and Jenson have similar helmet colors (red, white, and blue), so one of them using yellow instead of red, white, and blue makes the cars easier to distinguish on-track.
