It's Thursday now, which is never a good thing, but more importantly, it is Waterloo Day. This is to do with the battle and not to be confused with April 6, which is the Abba day. Anyway, here are some F1 related things to talk about:

  • Nick has written his first couple of posts on a new F1 blog - Racing Politics. What a great time to start up a politics blog, there is loads to discuss! It's a good first post, and the header picture is pretty nice too.
  • Former British champions have been talking up all things British, with Mansell suggesting that Button might be the best thing since sliced bread, whilst Hill is sure that Formula 1 is going to miss Silverstone. Well, yes, it will, but he would say that, wouldn't he?
  • Joe has a nice and cynical take on some of the latest FIA/FOTA happenings, which naturally appeals to us if only because it has the words conspiracy theory in there.
  • Finally, Mr C pointed out a really good video from the Beeb with Jenson Button, in which the championship leader takes part in 'Fastermind', a take on the good ol' question and answer format. Highly recommended.

That'll do for now. Please keep your great comments coming, we love to hear from you. I do, especially on Thursdays, they make my day. I'll see you in the comments.

Nothing wrong with Thursdays. Thursdays are when Autosport arrives at my door. Thursdays are the bridge between Hump Day and Friday.

They beat Tuesdays. Tuesdays are just filler.

A new day but an old coversation.

Did we decide on a type of ale for sidepodale?

Did we decide on a type of ale for sidepodale?

I did, but you said you couldn't make it. Not sure a vote of 1 is a majority either.

  • me17/06/2009 at 23:24

    am liking the red.

But more seriously, 1 vote for the Irish Red, I like the idea now.

  • Dan Brunell17/06/2009 at 23:26

I did, but you said you couldn’t make it. Not sure a vote of 1 is a majority either.

I am not going to make a final decision till I hear from Mr. and Mrs. C.. what would they like their ale to be?

So it shall be. In 12 weeks, we will have about 24 22-oz botteles of Sidepodale Irish Red ready for consumption. I'll send over a case to Sidepodtowers.

  • Dan Brunell17/06/2009 at 23:32

It doesn't involve monkeys or sticking needles in my arms.. does it? Otherwise I am game.

  • me17/06/2009 at 23:34

ok. we have some new, but not very exciting technology to try out. amy and christine have been testing it already and you can now all view it at the following url:

    http://www.sidepodcast.com/realtime/mobile/

the plan is to provide some kind of simple doohickey for mobile users with old phones. those who don't have G1, iPhone, Pre or Blackberry handsets.

at the moment it actually requires manual refreshing, but you should be able to comment on any thread like doohickey. quoting isn't possible though. just reading and responding is all it's designed to do right now.

anyhow, please give it a whirl and throw any suggestions this way. cheers.

Refreshed page and revious comment was stil there n the comments box. Trivial to delete but could cause duplicate comments.

  • Pat W17/06/2009 at 23:41

It loaded via WAP on my Nokia :-)

But I can't make it comment. It jumps from the thread drop-down choice to the comment button when I navigate, but when I try and comment it just refreshes the page.

Testing right now. It might be a little bit, I have to put in the address into a old razr that is my back-up phone.

It ignores the text box when you scroll down - but I've just found if you nav further down and highlight the 'Daily: 18th June 2009' link, the nav up again, you are on the box and can enter text (albeit really tiny on my screen). But moving in that direction skips the Comment button.

On my phone it could be a pain but the limitation isn't realtime, it is not having a qwerty keyboard.

there was, but on some browsers it was so aggressive it would refresh in the midst of timing. so currently removed and under investigation.

  • Andy Taylor (iPaq HW6915)17/06/2009 at 23:50

  • Pat W17/06/2009 at 23:51

Seems bloody awesome to me. It is a bit clunky on my generation of phone but you'd expect it to be. This has opened up mobile realtime comments which weren't previously available. If I make it to Goodwood it will come in VERY handy if we do a meet-up.

  • Dan Brunell17/06/2009 at 23:52

Works on IE 6 and 7, Firefox and on my blackberry. Not on the Razr however but I would caulk that up to being a terrible phone if anything.

to be honest, it's already gone better than expected :)

older IE testing is good, as we only have version 8. essentially if there's nothing really bad about it, i'm a happy bunny.

hehe. for me, its the enhancements to safari browser. but other updates will start to make sense in the future.

for example, push notifications could be interesting.

it's handy that notes sync properly. and i think you can buy tv shows directly on the device which is handy.

I'm really not sure how the tethering is meant to work. I don't have my laptop here, so I can't check right now. I'll have to see if the Apple web site has more howto information on that. It works with the blackberry, so the iphone should now do it, which would be great.

Yeah that was odd, the only thing I could think was that he wasn't really listening....

  • Steven Roy18/06/2009 at 02:06

Yeah that was odd, the only thing I could think was that he wasn't really listening....

At the time he drove for them Williams has BMW engines and this was before BMW had their own team. THe marriage between Williams and BMW was acrimonious so I wonder if he was on the BMW side of the split. Button bought his way out of his Williams contract to sign for Honda so I wonder if there is some bad feeling to Williams as a result.

  • Alison18/06/2009 at 02:08

    Oh okay I see.

  • Steven Roy18/06/2009 at 02:09

I have never read the film posts on Christine's personal blog until tonight. Don't know why but I always skipped them. It turns out that there are quite entertaining.

I can answer one of the questions she raises. The reason there are only 3 musketeers even though there are 4 of them is because D'Artagnan is an apprentice musketeer. He was probably stil going to musketeer college.

I don't get the blood test thing before you can get married in America either. What is the purpose of them?

  • Steven Roy18/06/2009 at 02:09

    Oh okay I see.

  • Steven Roy18/06/2009 at 02:13

Yeah although when it all goes over your head, it's much easier to ignore :D

That is the problem. The more you learn the harder it is to ignore and you start looking for it and trying to interpret the next move. The politics can be entertaining at times

  • Paul18/06/2009 at 02:20

    Not so this time.

I thought we were second class. I had 6 goes to get 3.0 to install, kept saying the activation server was down. Honestly, Apple and their partners need to up their game. They drum up all the hype, then don't deliver. Oh well.

it's a free lesson where we can do what we like (it's for getting work done basically), but when you haven't got any work to do they seem slightly pointless and a bit boring... i would get some prefect work out of the way but i've got to wait to have a meeting with the deputy head teacher but she is busy with the film crew.

no worries, but you need to learn to plug properly ;)

Sometimes it's really hard to think of a good way to work out how to do a good plug.

I often found that when I was plugging my book The Book With The Missing First Page which is still available on Amazon:

What's the point? Is the tiny half-flag symbolising that he's not that British?

  • Alianora La Canta18/06/2009 at 12:40

    Referring to yesterday's meet-up conversation:

I tried setting up a meeting a month ago and got no responses at all until last week (when someone said "no" because they weren't going within 3000 miles of the circuit).

F1 Fanatic is setting one up, but it's on Facebook so I haven't got the foggiest idea about the details.

Setting up one now will be very difficult because my weekend is now planned assuming I won't be meeting anyone else (and my dad's with me so I'd have to clear any meetings with him).

If anyone does find out or intend to generate any meet-ups, please could they send me a comment at my blog since that's the only place on the internet I'm going to be reasonably in a position to use during the weekend?

  • Alianora La Canta18/06/2009 at 12:42

If Andy's having anything like the same experience I do, that PDA/network combo struggles with pictures, never mind the complexities that form the typical Sidepodcast page. This is part of the reason why my browsing is very limited when I'm using that device (the other is that this page would cost 14.4p per refresh, despite having few comments at the moment).

    the breakaway.

Was there ever a more disappointing biscuit, with the possible exception of the Penguin?

Sacrilege! The Penguin is the greates of biscuits!

Hey all, am looking for a bit of advice. I'm currently writing up a formal letter/proposal to our headmaster detailing my plans for developing one of the spare rooms in our school, and asking for his thoughts and if we can go ahead (I’ve been asked to do develop the room by the deputy head). I was just wondering if anyone had any advice for writing formal proposals? i don't want to come across as rude or anything.

Lou, in writing an email, start with a formal greeting to your headmaster. Then first thing you do is to explain why you're writing (i.e. about the spare room). Then next paragraph, go into the details (i.e. what will happen to it, why it will benefit the school). Last paragraph should contain next steps (ask for his thoughts and his kind permission to go ahead).

How formal you need to be depends on how formal your headmaster is. As your reader, you have to assess his personality and your relationship with him. You can work from there.

  • Lukeh18/06/2009 at 13:37

Sounds good what Journeyer says. Was thinking of what to suggest but i dont think I can beat that :D

ahh thanks Journeyer :) that helps alot. It's not an email, it's got to be a typed document that i can print off and give to him. Head of sixth form said she'd read it through for me and make sure it was alright but your advice helps alot. As a new prefect i don't really want to upset him/ do the wrong thing just yet ;)

Now, I know no one's too interested in this right now, but I'll post it, just in case:

    Mosley offers compromise on 2010

    BBC

    Autosport

    In a nutshell:

    - 2-year glide path for budget cap

    - independent auditors for budget cap

    - 2009 rules will apply for engines

    - some changes in the ICA?

    In return,

    - commitment needed by tomorrow

    - work under 1998 Concorde Agreement until a new one can be drafted

Hmmm... Is this good enough for FOTA? I think it depends on what changes are made in the ICA. If it gives FOTA more say on how rules are drawn up, they may just bite...

  • Journeyer18/06/2009 at 14:05

Fota want 2 things: Money and power, max is offering neither

    Money isn't Max's patch - that's Bernie's.

As for power, it depends on what this means (from AUTOSPORT):

He has told teams that he is prepared to discuss the FIA's International Court of Appeal, and also remove the controversial Appendix 5 to the 2010 Sporting Regulations. This latter element had angered teams, who feared that it gave the governing body carte blanche to impose whatever rules they wanted.

So the FIA is effectively giving up some of its power. Will that be enough? It depends on how confident FOTA is of pulling off a breakaway, I guess.

  • Alex Andronov18/06/2009 at 14:06

No Max is next to impossible - unless FOTA have a lot of sympathizers in the FIA. The next best thing is to limit or reduce his power in F1. They couldn't care less what he does in the touring side of things, anyway.

  • Journeyer18/06/2009 at 14:07

    Creative writing is different.

  • Journeyer18/06/2009 at 14:15

Oooh, hope to find a proper source for this, but a tweet came out saying:

Swiss female driver Natacha Gachnang hopes to have a test with the new Campos F1 team. She currently competes in the Formula 2 series.

Hmmm... Interesting. Now to find a proper source...

  • Alex Andronov18/06/2009 at 14:16

Much more personal for a start off.

Which seems odd when you compare it to a personal blog

  • Alex Andronov18/06/2009 at 14:21

    than a personal blog?

You find, or at least I do, that you do tend to put a lot more of your unconscious mind out in to the open with creative writing.

Whereas the traditional blog post about "I am doing this, now I'm doing this other thing, now I'm doing this" is more often about what you do rather than what you think or feel.

  • Journeyer18/06/2009 at 14:23

Whereas the traditional blog post about "I am doing this, now I'm doing this other thing, now I'm doing this" is more often about what you do rather than what you think or feel.

For me there is a vast difference between the two.

Blogging is more: "This happened to me and I think you might enjoy reading about it because it's likely happened to you too."

Poetry and fiction is: "This is a subject close to me that I have chosen to write about. I am making it all up. This is my imagination at work. You may or may not like it."

  • Christine18/06/2009 at 14:28

    Hey guys and gals,

I know Batracer is on the unmentionables list so I hope Mr and Mrs C won't hunt me down, but I just wanted to bring this up as our current game is now one race from over.

The question has been lodged whether anyone would be interested in another game. So far we have 3 particpants, myself included, and the reason I'm bringing it up here is because we are recruiting.

The exact series hasn't been decided yet, so if you have any preference just shout. Personally I'd like a 2002, 2005 or 2007 game,a lthough I've heard the 2005 series are quite hard/annoying.

So please, if there's any interest just let yourself be heared. There is no wiki-page as of yet, because we do want to make sure we have a good deal of participants first. Once we do, we can start setting up the game and the wiki-page for you to sign up!

  • me18/06/2009 at 15:56

For that I would need a car first ;)

    Hopefully soon though...

  • Alex Andronov18/06/2009 at 16:31

For that I would need a car first ;)

    Ah...

Somebody that I know passed their test six months ago and got given a GPS as a present for passing.

This means that in their entire driving life there's a good chance they will never drive anywhere without somebody saying to them... "turn left here" etc. For me I haven't had it since I passed my test.

  • Lukeh18/06/2009 at 16:33

I don't think I could ever use a GPS, what's wrong with the good old massive maps to get confused with? :P

Like I say, I'll be browsing over the summer but I'm pondering over waiting till 2010 as I turn 21 on New Years Eve and insurance will drop for me like Massa down the leaerboards on a wet Silverstone afternoon.

There was a great feature on the Daily Show where one of their reporters went to visit the New York Times. The editor of the times was saying about how it was really expensive to collect news and without collecting news nobody would know anything.

The guy from the daily show says, "Okay cool, so can you show me today's newspaper?"

    "This is today's newspaper."

"No this must be yesterday's newspaper."

    "No its today's newspaper."

"But there is nothing about today in it. Why would I want to know about what happened yesterday."

If they are still slow without KERS, I'd rather not see Lewis overdrive in quali or race and spin off trying to wrestle a pig of a car.

KERS won't help their pace, just help them be defensive

    I'd fit the spare..

  • Scott Woodwiss18/06/2009 at 18:56

I know that stuff gets you home but doesn't it total the tyre afterwards

He's getting new ones tomorrow. Not exactly something he can afford to spend money on right now...

    Evening all,

i'll catch up with comments in a moment but i was just wondering if anyone had mentioned that Brawn GP have a new sponsor?

Also the car shown in the photo confuses me. it's the RA108 (i think) with strange 09 developments like the front wing, no winglets and the little tiny shark fin on the engine cover...wouldn't it have made more sense not to have included the monster/ car in the photo if they weren't going to use the Brawngp001? it also slightly worries me that if this is the display car that they may be bringing it to Goodwood....

    Evening all.

Unfortunately Lou display cars tend to be old cars tarted up to look like the real thing. I always have a laugh when you see people on the floor at shows trying to get a view of some hidden piece or some 'expert' explaining to his mate the technicalities of the car when it is quite clearly an entirely different car.

Particularly the cars at the dealerships, and since the stands at GW are basically mobile dealerships, you're not going to have a great deal of luck getting a new car. The paddock, on the other hand..

yeah i know, the car at goodwood last year was the ra107, but i would have thought they would have used either a car that looked like the current one, or no car at all for the photo. it just surprised me.. i suppose i was hoping as they wouldn't be running the car at goodwood and they have been doing really well it would at least look right...

The men in suits just want a pic of them standing next to an F1 car with their name on, they don't care about the wings.

There would be little if any money changing hands in that deal. Probably suits and stuff in return for the sign on the car and both groups get some press coverage.

  • Lukeh18/06/2009 at 19:23

    err, 'week'

    *giggles childishly* :D

Well yeah, it is all about the pic of the suits next to the car. Brand association.

  • Steven Roy18/06/2009 at 19:25

    What makes you say that?

Gieves and Hawkes may be famous but they are not big enough to seriously buy sponsorship in F1. Most deal of this kind are done for the press coverage and so that the team concerned can say that they have a new sponsor

  • Pat W18/06/2009 at 19:25

Right - time for the interview...

    Fun fun fun...

    in the sun, sun, sun.

(HOW was that missed earlier? I want answers)

hehe, i've no idea what a homezilla is. but i likes the sound of it.

An adaptation of 'homeys' I'd guess. Sinze a 'zilla' is a really big something, I'm guessing he's a big fan.

I heard the term 'bridezilla' today. One of the people at college is getting married soon and she said she will now have time to become a bridezilla.

Here's an old thing on that site which says:

Check out most excellent race notes on the International Feed from pdogs homezilla Patrick on Too Much Raching right here! Cooler than FLAVIO!

  • Steven Roy18/06/2009 at 19:33

    sidepodspace update.

I nearly forgot today's launch. NASA TV are currently showing the preparations for the LCROSS launch which is due to happen at 5:12 EDT / 10:12 UK. Not as exciting as a shuttle launch but a big firework none the less.

Kit Kat Green Tea - Japan

Kit Kat Pineapple - South Africa

    Kit Kat Banana - Canada

    and

Kit Kat Yakimorokoshi [grilled corn] - Japan ??

i really hope you are joking...

  • Alison18/06/2009 at 20:06

Hey Alison, any more proposals? ;)

No no. One in two days is enough for any girl!

  • Pat W18/06/2009 at 20:06

    What?

    What?

    What?

    Yeeuch!

I agree with this assessment, apart from the banana one which seems interesting.

  • Bassano Clapper18/06/2009 at 20:06

    Yeeuch!

Plenty more where that came from, most of the really odd ones are Japanese

No no. One in two days is enough for any girl!

you're clearly not on facebook :)

  • Alison18/06/2009 at 20:08

I'm sure the corn one would just taste like generic nut. We have peanut ones (at least in chunky)

  • Alison18/06/2009 at 20:09

you're clearly not on facebook :)

Clearly I need to get out more....

  • Steven Roy18/06/2009 at 20:09

I agree with this assessment, apart from the banana one which seems interesting.

I almost let banana off but Kit Kats are crunchy and crunchy banana is just wrong. Had they been soft and chewy banana would have been OK because I love banana

  • Nick18/06/2009 at 20:09

Clearly the KitKat is the winner of this competition.

It should be disqualified on a technicality. The kit kat is not a biscuit, as the chunky proves, it is a miniature chocolate bar!

  • Bassano Clapper18/06/2009 at 20:09

Have you purloined a new router yet?

I am sure NASA do this just to make Christine happy. The weather has just gone red apparently. Never heard that terminology before but apparently there are thunderstorms in the area and if they don't move away then the launch will not happen

  • Steven Roy18/06/2009 at 20:16

I posted something at stupi o'clock this morning and didn't get an answer. Now that the world is awake I really need an answer because this question has bugged me for years.

  • Pat W18/06/2009 at 20:17

I almost let banana off but Kit Kats are crunchy and crunchy banana is just wrong. Had they been soft and chewy banana would have been OK because I love banana

The chocolate + banana overrides those concerns, for me.

  • Bassano Clapper18/06/2009 at 20:17

    Blood test for Rabies?

    Happy birthday!

    Big Cake?

Thanks very much and to everyone else who has wished me happy birthday.

It's not a big cake- and it's not a major birthday either (phew).

Still it was a nice relaxing day off work. Cant wait for the weekend.

  • me18/06/2009 at 20:26

They have been doing the blood tests since way before DNA could be checked

    from wikiwhatsit:

"Some states require a blood test to verify that the applicants are not carrying syphilis."

  • Pat W18/06/2009 at 20:26

So please, if there's any interest just let yourself be heared. There is no wiki-page as of yet, because we do want to make sure we have a good deal of participants first. Once we do, we can start setting up the game and the wiki-page for you to sign up!

I know I've asked this last time there was a call for players.. is Batracer a hugely involving game required lots of effort? I have more free time now so I'm interested, if I don't have to spend all evening on it.

  • Steven Roy18/06/2009 at 20:27

It doesn't take very much effort at all. For me that is the problem. It just isn't involving enough to play it more than a few times

  • Nick18/06/2009 at 20:29

i know nothing. i just google.

One of my friends needs that tattooed on his forehead

  • Pat W18/06/2009 at 20:29

Didn't work for CART vs. IRL did it?

This is different, the competitors are breaking away, not a promotor.

This is more like USAC vs CART in the late 70s.

  • Joe18/06/2009 at 20:30

Egypt beat Italy 1-0 in the Confederations Cup. Hell yes. Cant stand Italy so I'm very pleased. Massive result for Egypt too.

  • Pat W18/06/2009 at 20:30

Didn't work for CART vs. IRL did it?

Worked a treat in boxing until there were 5 bodies or more organising championships. Everyone who is against the breakaway acts as if CART/IRL is the only breakaway of any kind ever.

  • James18/06/2009 at 20:34

The question has been lodged whether anyone would be interested in another game. So far we have 3 particpants, myself included, and the reason I'm bringing it up here is because we are recruiting.

The exact series hasn't been decided yet, so if you have any preference just shout. Personally I'd like a 2002, 2005 or 2007 game,a lthough I've heard the 2005 series are quite hard/annoying.

Personally I think we need to have a break between this and the next batracer game, I've been playing a lot of games on BatRacer and think I need to slow down :D

Also a break might be good becauser fewer people signed up for the 1999 game than the 2009 and it was done right after.

    Oh and avoid 2005 :P

  • Steven Roy18/06/2009 at 20:34

    aaaaaaaaaaaaaaah.....

    Busted :)

  • Scott Woodwiss18/06/2009 at 20:36

  • Steven Roy18/06/2009 at 20:37

Moto GP race with tyres which are harder on one side that the other? Is this new?

No. They have a problem in some tracks where there are many right hand corners and only one or two left handers for example. If the whole tyre was hard enough to deal with the right handers the left hand side of th tyre would never heat up enough to work. There have been cases where F! and other racing cars have used one compound on one side of the car and a different on on the other or have run three tyres of one type and a fourth that is different. Of course in Max's homogeneous world that is not allowed any more.

Most famous autographs I have in there are Bruno Senna, Allan McNish, Johnny Herbert, Takuma Sato and erm...well I'd best leave it there. There's one other, but I don't want to risk getting punched if I say HIS name.

You mean Klien by the way?

  • Scott Woodwiss18/06/2009 at 20:43

Anyone picked up on Red Bull bringing a big update to the RB5 this weekend? Here's an extract on what's new:

The changes, which will include a new nose, engine cover and rear diffuser as well as modifications to the car's wheel-base - which has been back through the chassis - are believed to have given the car a significantly look.

I jusr did some research on pre-marital blood tests and found a sensible answer. It concerns blood groups and it is something I never knew and now wonder why everyone isn't tested and aware.

Blood as everyone knows can be rhesus positive or negative. If a woman is - and a man is + and she gets pregnant with a rhesus + baby her body will produce anti-bodies which can harm the baby.

  • RG18/06/2009 at 20:45

I look forward to when Klien is back racing in F1.

Red Bull and Brawn on the front you

I don't see any way that McLaren can top a session if they have no fuel at all in the car and beam it in as the engine needs it. It is way too unstable to be quick at Silverstone

NASA making Christine's day again. They have now decided that they have to miss the first two launch windows today due to thunder and will aim for the third and final window today at 10:32.

Failing that it is try again tomorrow time

Hey all, just stopping by to leave my first comment. Just started listening to Sidepodcast today, really impressed with everything thats going on here

    Hip Hip

and lightening according to star trek!

NASA making Christine's day again. They have now decided that they have to miss the first two launch windows today due to thunder and will aim for the third and final window today at 10:32.

is that 22:32 BST? or in about half an hour? I might stay up for that then.

  • Steven Roy18/06/2009 at 21:02

Google knows everything. Sometimes I forget to ask. I like that there are smart people to answer my questions though :)

I guess we need to add something to the inventions list then. We need an internet service that reminds us to ask

    They have thunder in space?

No, but a lightning strike on the rocket could damage it. NASA have avoided launching when there is a risk of thunder since Apollo 12 was hit.

  • Steven Roy18/06/2009 at 21:03

Thursday is officially the worst day of the week! I always have awful Thursdays at work. Plus it's a totally nothingness day....

Once you get proposed to on a Wednesday the following day is bound to be an anti-climax

  • Steven Roy18/06/2009 at 21:04

    They have thunder in space?

They don't launch from space. They launch into space. They have thunder in Florida

  • Paul Convery18/06/2009 at 21:04

Hi Paul. Will you be joining us for any of the F1 sessions over the weekend. We are here for every practise session and quali and the race. There is also a live show before the BBC coverage of the race starts and a live recording of a show on Sunday night

Hopefully, I should atleast be poping by for the race and the live recordings on Sunday. Sadly I'll be working on Saturday while the quali is on for a few more weeks atleast.

  • Chris_Humphreys18/06/2009 at 21:05

Yes. It's not a shuttle launch. It has been postponed till the middle of July. This is the lunar observation mission. Unmanned

The Parade Lap show normally starts an hour before the BBC program starts

  • Alison18/06/2009 at 21:07

I was gonna actually be home to watch the race live and comment for the first time but now because of the infamous router I can't do both at once :(

  • Steven Roy18/06/2009 at 21:07

Hmmmm! I think you're overlooking how horrified I was....

That is just going to make today worse though

Well I'll be missing race and live show(s) as I am working and won't have time to watch the race on iPlayer before the debrief :(

  • Scott Woodwiss18/06/2009 at 21:09

While we have a fairly decent contingent in the comments at the moment, can I just make a small push for questions for Kubica, Heidfeld, Klien and Davidson? Leave them on my blog please. Thanks much. :)

  • Alison18/06/2009 at 21:10

How long is long?? Where would I get one from? It would definitely be worth it if it's only a couple of quid. I'll save that back in physiotherapy bills....

  • Andy Taylor18/06/2009 at 21:10

I'm a biiiig fan of The Killers, but I don't rate their live stuff at all. But their cover they did at Abbey Road is utterly fabtabulous.

Just found that on YouTube. Tis an excellent version.

  • Dank18/06/2009 at 21:10

Just got back from an evening at the Red Bull Energy Station and tour of the pitlane. Immense.

Things didn't get off to a good start when I accidentally tipped half a can of Red Bull Cola down my front whilst trying to take some snaps from the balcony. Opps.

The Energy Station is huge and very impressive, easily the biggest thing in the whole paddock.

We popped into the garage and saw the likes of Geoff Willis and saw some of the updates the team are introducing this weekend. The nose looks a bit different - we weren't allowed to take snaps at the new diffuser at the back!

Saw Sebastian Vettel as well and got a few snaps and his autograph. He seems a lot smaller in real-life!

I'll get some snaps up my blog in a little while. :-)

  • Steven Roy18/06/2009 at 21:12

They expect the weather to be good in ten minutes time which gives them ten minutes before the launch

  • Chris_Humphreys18/06/2009 at 21:16

Excellent. Now all you need to know is which cable you need, and how long the current one is.

If it's the cable from the router to the laptop/PC/Mac it's a Cat5 cable with a RJ45 connector on it but if it's from your ADSL filter to router it's a Modem cable with a RJ11 connector on it.

    Hope that helps

  • Steven Roy18/06/2009 at 21:16

Why do NASA have to put holds in a countdown? It gets me every time. I always think there is a problem.

  • Chris_Humphreys18/06/2009 at 21:16

You do know that you can get phone cable extensions. I have a reel of phone cable like a power extension cord and it cost very little. It is probably cheaper to get that and move the router than to buy ethernet cable

  • Alison18/06/2009 at 21:19

Ooooh okay. Maybe I have time to go tomorrow after work. No more lying on the floor for me..... Still won't reach up to my bed though :(

  • Nick18/06/2009 at 21:19

    Rob!!!

    On tomorrow and monday!

We don't have a landline. It's virgin cable broadband

  • Steven Roy18/06/2009 at 21:20

    Rob!!!

Was he on the radio earlier?

  • Scott Woodwiss18/06/2009 at 21:20

Maybe I'll see him in the paddock this weekend. Ferrari are a Puma team and all so... ;)

  • RG18/06/2009 at 21:20

Was he on the radio earlier?

Oh yeah, tis tomorrow. Get to sulk again how BBC Tees is better than BBC Newcaslte. Again.

  • Steven Roy18/06/2009 at 21:21

We don't have a landline. It's virgin cable broadband

OK. That's a shame because phone cable extensions are dirt cheap and you can buy them anywhere.

  • me18/06/2009 at 21:21

We don't have a landline. It's virgin cable broadband

i think that may still be ethernet. but yeah, take the cable in to be sure.

  • Steven Roy18/06/2009 at 21:21

We have a go for launch

  • Alison18/06/2009 at 21:22

OK. That's a shame because phone cable extensions are dirt cheap and you can buy them anywhere.

Yeah, on the plus side I have saved 3 years worth of line rental :)

  • Steven Roy18/06/2009 at 21:22

Yeah, on the plus side I have saved 3 years worth of line rental :)

You have the best of the deal then

  • Andy Taylor18/06/2009 at 21:23

We don't have a landline. It's virgin cable broadband

So you need the aforementioned Ethernet cable with RJ45 at each end (Proper name is T586A). Maplin do several lengths and aren't too expensive.

Can you connect a wireless router to the broadband cable?

  • Nick18/06/2009 at 21:23

We have a go for launch

    Roger

  • me18/06/2009 at 21:23

    hahahahaha.

    hehehehe.

  • Alison18/06/2009 at 21:24

Can you connect a wireless router to the broadband cable?

    DON'T ASK

  • Andy Taylor18/06/2009 at 21:25

OK. That's a shame because phone cable extensions are dirt cheap and you can buy them anywhere.

Phone extensions can also degrade the ADSL signal. You should always connect your router to the master socket if at all possible, ideally with a replacement front plate that splits the ADSL out and removes the need to add microfilters to all the extension sockets.

  • Andy Taylor18/06/2009 at 21:25

    hahahahaha.

    OK what did I miss?

  • Steven Roy18/06/2009 at 21:26

    OK what did I miss?

Her house mate took the wireless router which caused the problem in the first place

  • Alison18/06/2009 at 21:27

I'm only here another 2 weeks though so I don't want to do anything too expensive.

  • Steven Roy18/06/2009 at 21:27

They have just polled all the flight controllers and they all gave a go. It looks like they are going to launch in five minutes time

  • Andy Taylor18/06/2009 at 21:27

Her house mate took the wireless router which caused the problem in the first place

Ah. Does this mean they are bringing it back at any point? If not they're not much more than the cost of the Ethernet cable.

  • Alison18/06/2009 at 21:29

It just seems stupidly wasteful to buy a new one to use for a fortnight. I can get onto the internet even if I am lying on the floor by my front door ;)

  • Steven Roy18/06/2009 at 21:46

I think it is four days. I need to read the mission brief again. I read it just before the launch was cancelled to make way for the non-launch of the shuttle. I don't think there is anything exciting to see in this mission unless we see the bits that impact the moon or they find Martians up there.

  • Scott Woodwiss18/06/2009 at 21:46

I reckon tomorrow's gonna be a good day. It's casual day tomorrow at work, I've also booked a half day and I'm meeting some of my friends from school who are all celebrating the end of 6th form.

  • Lukeh18/06/2009 at 21:47

 Have you seen Talladega Nights?

I am from ze Formula... Un!

  • lou18/06/2009 at 21:47

    Because you love him?

ahaha maybe... it's just so cute... i'm in a strange mood today.

  • Scott Woodwiss18/06/2009 at 21:48

    What's up with your iPhone?

Erm, nothing, why? I'm gonna take my laptop anyway.

  • Andy Taylor18/06/2009 at 21:48

How long does it take to get there?

Wikipedia says 4 days. Apollo missions took about 3.

  • Christine18/06/2009 at 21:48

Erm, nothing, why? I'm gonna take my laptop anyway.

Dunno, just heard you say a couple of times about wifi - in the paddock and at the hotel. Thought maybe it wasn't working properly or something.

  • RG18/06/2009 at 21:49

    Because you love him?

I need more Timo, I haven't seen Timo in a few days. I'm fallen behind on my plans.

  • Nick18/06/2009 at 21:49

we expect live commenting from the track. nothing less is acceptable :)

Dunno, just heard you say a couple of times about wifi - in the paddock and at the hotel. Thought maybe it wasn't working properly or something.

Oh that! I was just enquiring about wifi because I wanted to take my laptop and keep you lovely lot updated. Now that the hotel does have it, after a quick scout on the hotel site, I can provide an update on Saturday evening.

  • Andy Taylor18/06/2009 at 21:50

I'm going to bid everyone goodnight as I have to be at work mega early in the morning (no prizes for guessing why), so I'm off to bed to watch some Family Guy

  • Christine18/06/2009 at 21:50

    But not throughout the day?

  • Nick18/06/2009 at 21:51

    Night Andy

  • me18/06/2009 at 21:51

    night andy.

  • Steven Roy18/06/2009 at 21:51

Wikipedia says 4 days. Apollo missions took about 3.

Wikipedia?? I guess there is not as much hurry when you don't have people on board. I am amazed they jettisoned the fairing over the satellites bfore they left the atmosphere. Why not do it in lunar orbit? I know they are trying to minimise space junk but exposing satellites at that stage has to have a risk

  • Andy Taylor18/06/2009 at 21:51

    But not throughout the day?

But isn't Scott going to be too busy writing stuff for Puma?

  • lou18/06/2009 at 21:52

    night andy :)

    Night Andy

    Night sir.

  • Scott Woodwiss18/06/2009 at 21:53

    But not throughout the day?

Throughout the day it'll most likely be from the iPhone. If there's a break in the schedule and I can access wifi somewhere, I'll have a sit down for a bit and quickly jump in to say hi. But only IF the chance comes up. Most likely be the odd comment from the iPhone throughout the day and then a proper update in the evening back at the hotel via laptop.

  • lou18/06/2009 at 21:53

  • Christine18/06/2009 at 21:54

But isn't Scott going to be too busy writing stuff for Puma?

Well, yea maybe. Just that he's been going on about the iPhone, and about this competition win, I thought we might get more than a quick update on a Saturday night is all. The two make a perfect combination in my eyes.

  • Steven Roy18/06/2009 at 21:54

The press kit says 4 days but a quick scan doesn't reveal if it hangs around in Earth orbit for a systems check or just heads off straight away

  • me18/06/2009 at 21:54

Well, yea maybe. Just that he's been going on about the iPhone, and about this competition win, I thought we might get more than a quick update on a Saturday night is all. The two make a perfect combination in my eyes.

can we get a call during the parade lap?

    live from 'stone with sidepodscott.

I assume something is happening in Apple world

  • Scott Woodwiss18/06/2009 at 21:56

can we get a call during the parade lap?

Ya know, I was gonna suggest that! Of course, I'd be more than happy to. I'll make sure I'm logged in on Skype on t'iPhone at least an hour before the race. :)

  • me18/06/2009 at 21:57

    good man.

  • Scott Woodwiss18/06/2009 at 21:58

I'm sure that will be useful.

What I might also try and do is record the Q&A session with Nick and Kub with t'iPhone, transfer it Saturday night and upload it to drop.io. But that's not for certain. I have other plans which involve recordings but we'll see what happens.

  • Nick18/06/2009 at 21:59

    good man.

Im going to miss the parade lap, maybe i should call in so i can find out what's going on :P

Very good. You nervous about meeting all these F1 peeps?

If I'm honest, not really. Although I say that now. Come the point where they're just the other side of a door, my heart might be going 10 to the dozen...

  • Nick18/06/2009 at 22:03

    hehe. that'd be ace.

    :D

might be hard to know when to call in, and i will either be on a train or in a station, so it might not be the best audio quality...

  • Scott Woodwiss18/06/2009 at 22:03

That reminds me, if you meet DC, tell him he owes me a fiver.

I'll be very lucky if I do. He's got other commitments with the BBC and Red Bull over the weekend, so there's a chance I won't get to, but again we'll see. I'm just excited that I'm going in the first place.

  • Lukeh18/06/2009 at 22:04

I think I'm still trying to get my head around it all. Renault and BMW on Saturday with a barbecue in the evening, then interviewing fans on Sunday.

There's gonna be a lot of video and picture taking, that's for sure as well.

  • Nick18/06/2009 at 22:07

So this hotel I'm staying in gives me a double room for sole occupancy :D, with private bathroom, early morning tea, continental breakfast and use of the spa. Damn that sounds awesome!

Yup, I can feel the hate increasing. :D

  • Alison18/06/2009 at 22:15

Do hotels still try to ram adults in single beds? I'd fall out....

  • RG18/06/2009 at 22:16

Yup, I can feel the hate increasing. :D

I get to watch the race in my home, in a bed, keep warm with hot chocolate, toast, optional sunday roast, and get to watch all the coverage on the BBC while listening to Croft and Davidson. I also have my own bathroom and bed.

Basically I am saying I understand why everyone stays at home during the Turkish GP, they think watching it at home is better than watching it at the track.

  • Scott Woodwiss18/06/2009 at 22:17

Jesus, some of the things you get in a double room are just immense. Flat screen satellite TV/DVD, air con, trouser press... all too much to take in at the moment. I'm now officially blown away.

Yea. Tis a bit of a worry though, because he doesn't like to go on and on about the politics - I think his blog is showing some signs of fatigue at it all. And we've already established we can't abide the sport at the moment.

Maybe we'll end up talking about the future of Sidepodpanda.

  • RG18/06/2009 at 22:23

Interesting item in the paper version of Autosport. There is a move to get a series of races run to Le Mans LMP1 rules will be combined into an LMP trophy to encourage more manufacturers into LMP1. They expect 6 to 8 races including Le Mans, Petit Le Mans and Sebring. This could happen as early as next season. This could turn into a very good championship.

They also opened the doors to F1 manufacturers last weekend at the 24 hours. I believe Toyota and BMW were interested in returning.

  • Steven Roy18/06/2009 at 22:31

I am sure if they agreed to supply Brawn engines and bits free next year I am sure Ross would be only too happy to put a sticker on the car.

No. Force India have partnership agreement that gives them access to KERS etc. Brawn simply buy engines. They don't even get gearboxes let alone KERS or any other goodies

  • Lukeh18/06/2009 at 22:39

yeah, I know that. I thought I had read that Brawn got assistance for the conversion from Honda though.

Never mind, just seems strange Mercedes didn't at least get the three ointed star on the engine over

  • Steven Roy18/06/2009 at 22:41

Odd things you find on NASA press releases. A lunar day lasts about 29 Earth days. When I think about it I already knew that but I had never seen it expressed like that.

  • Pat W18/06/2009 at 22:42

Heh, I'm not gonna be there tomorrow, it's only for Saturday and Sunday. ;)

Yeah but I figured you'd leave tomorrow night or sth

Never mind, just seems strange Mercedes didn't at least get the three ointed star on the engine over

They got help to fit the engine in the car as it wasn't designed for that engine, but outside of that not much else

  • Steven Roy18/06/2009 at 22:43

Technically the team is called Brawn Mercedes though is it not? So that is some sort of advertisment

That is just because engine suppliers always get a mention but Mercedes could be cashing in here had they invested a few quid early in the year

  • Steven Roy18/06/2009 at 22:43

    Night Pat

Yeh thats true, but its rather odd that Brawn have yet to get the cars covered in ads.

You would have thought all this success would bring the sponsors flooding in.

No doubt they are "in the wings". Must be had to get any sponsor to commit right now.

Its England, ive seen bowls of fruit do predictions 3 days in advance to the same degree of accuracy as 'weathermen'

  • Paul Convery18/06/2009 at 23:01

If its anything like it is here in Ireland during the race, the weather will be changing from sun, to rain, to hail, back to sun and then some thunder and lighting all in the space off about 10 minutes

we need some more '08 weather.

I wouldnt mind a hail storm, has there ever been one during a race?

  • Paul Convery18/06/2009 at 23:07

You mean you just want it to rain 100% off the time?lol

The question I have is can the FIA lock them out of some of the tracks they currently run...that might be a blessing

The beauty of it is the FIA cant do much without the EU hitting them with a cricket bat

I don't get the blood test thing before you can get married in America either. What is the purpose of them?

It's screening for genetic diseases. Idea being that you can tell before you get married if there is a high likelihood of your combinations of genes giving rise to I think Huntingtons, cerebral palsy and other things of that sort. I suppose the point is that if you are very likely to have children with genetic illnesses it would be better to know before you procreate, or better still before you get married. Seems quite a clinical process in both senses of the word.
