It's the day after the night before and I can only imagine what kind of sugar hangover I will have after all that Milky Bar. Nevertheless, the week goes on, and here are some of the things we're talking about at the moment:

  • Nick Heidfeld has been blown away by the number of submissions for his helmet design competition, with other 5,000 to date. Apparently one of the designs is a panoramic view of the Nurburgring, which can only be described as bizarre. If you haven't had a go yet, head on over to the site to submit your design. (Please note, we still think Button's competition is better.)
  • I had an overdose of more than just sugar yesterday, when a host of Franck pictures hit the Sidepodcast drop. Firstly, James made me an awesome Franck montage, whilst Gavin - newly returned from Le Mans - has pictures of the man on the start line. Yay for pictures.
  • In actual F1 news, Renault have defended Piquet's um, Piquetness, by suggesting that he is still learning, still inexperienced, and if there is no confidence in the car, how can they expect confidence in the driver? I would suggest that a lack of confidence is not the problem Piquet has.

Those are just some of the things we've been thinking about, if you have any more to add, please feel free to use the daily post to discuss anything on your mind. Yesterday, we managed to combine conversation about both politics and kettles in the same thread, so anything goes. I'll see you in the comments.

Mr. C, I think my question a few days ago got lost in the shuffle. Are you and Christine going to Silverstone this weekend?

Mr. C, I think my question a few days ago got lost in the shuffle. Are you and Christine going to Silverstone this weekend?

hi joe. i did reply, but the answer was no, we'd rather spend our hard earned money on something like a new mac, or, as chrsitine would prefer, a new kettle.

    anything but f1, in otherwords.

  • Joe in Fla17/06/2009 at 00:59

    anything but f1, in otherwords.

I understand, I am not spending money on F1 this year with no races in North America.

  • Paul17/06/2009 at 00:59

    anything but f1, in otherwords.

More comfie in front of the TV anyway.

...and you can enjoy a cuppa from that new kettle.

  • Joe in Fla17/06/2009 at 01:00

But I would spend any amount of money on F11

  • me17/06/2009 at 01:02

    hahaha. me too!!

    quite.

if f1 ever manages to dig itself out of the proverbial hole. it would appear we can go to malaysia, bahrain and turkey all for about the same price as silverstone. so maybe we'll do that?

  • Paul17/06/2009 at 01:05

    failing that, le mans :)

You know, after watching Le Mans, I am kicking myself in the butt for not going to Sebring....a 1.5 hr drive from my house. The ALMS race in St. Pete in conjunction with the Indycar race was lame.

  • Paul17/06/2009 at 01:10

Another good idea, and maybe better value, viewing wise.

    sidepodspace update

It looks like we may not get a shuttle launch tomorrow. There is now a 40% chance of weather affecting the tanking operation(filling the external fuel tank). There is lightening in the area. The tanking operation can be started as laste as 10pm EDT / 3am UK without affecting the schedule. I guess we will know in 45 minutes whether or not the launch is cancelled before the tanks filling has even started.

Those IMSA GTP cars were awesome. Shame they could never tie those rules to the Group C rules. We could have had some incredible Le Mans races then.

I really screwed up in the late 80's early 90's, IMSA raced around here alot and I could have seen that Nissan....could I call a car sexy? Well it was. I did meet Chip Robinson, the driver of the #84 Nissan, he was at the other urinal

A lot of really good drivers never get a break in F1 unfortunately.

Although I think a lot more did in the 60s. also, F2, Tasman series etc, were seen as "something" in those days, just like sports cars.

Although I think a lot more did in the 60s. also, F2, Tasman series etc, were seen as "something" in those days, just like sports cars.

That is definitely the case because fewer people were racing and a lot more were dying and as you say other classes had high visibility.

It doesn't bore me - it annoys me.

Let's hope Jenson and Rubens have a good battle then - that's our only realistic chance of a cracking race.

Weren't we expecting the apocalypse last Friday, as well though?

I wasn't - I was expecting a provisional result - which was what we got.

But with negotiations seemingly, in the words of JA, "at a dead end" (only seemingly because I'm not sure this is really the case), we may indeed see something a lot worse this Friday.

  • Rich17/06/2009 at 08:00

    sidepodspace update

THe launch of the space shuttle Endeavour was scrubbed at 1:55am EDT/ 6:44am UK due to a leak in the gaseous hydrogen vent system. Yep exactly the same type of fault that caused the previous launch to be cancelled.

Endeavour's next launch attempt for its STS-127 mission is targeted for July 11 at 7:39 p.m. EDT.

  • Rich17/06/2009 at 08:08

But with negotiations seemingly, in the words of JA, "at a dead end" (only seemingly because I'm not sure this is really the case), we may indeed see something a lot worse this Friday.

FOTA will not accept the 40 million cap for next year. Unless FIA remove this it is stale mate. Of course this is not the issue - FOTA wants to control more of the action since FIA has mis-managed its regulation in recent years. The budget cap is the thin-end of the wedge since Max thinks the teams get too much financial slice of the earnings. Once in place he will argue that he has saved them money so they need less from the earnings. This fight started when FOTA said it wanted more revenue and Max and Bernie said they should have less.

There only only resolution that could happen this Friday is for FOTA to essentially pull out, otherwise it will be a moving deadline.

  • Journeyer17/06/2009 at 08:08

Endeavour's next launch attempt for its STS-127 mission is targeted for July 11 at 7:39 p.m. EDT.

    Morning All

  • Journeyer17/06/2009 at 08:09

There only only resolution that could happen this Friday is for FOTA to essentially pull out, otherwise it will be a moving deadline.

But even a moving deadline would be a win for FOTA - the more the deadlines move, the less feasible it would be for new teams who aren't in the list yet to participate.

  • Chris_Humphreys17/06/2009 at 08:11

I would of throught that a least half the teams have started on there 2010 at least in design! Well March, etc be about to design and build a car quickly????

  • Journeyer17/06/2009 at 08:13

I would of [thought] that a least half the teams have started on there 2010 at least in design! Well March, etc be about to design and build a car quickly????

Most teams, whether existing or new, should have a 2010 design by now in the windtunnel. Even then, this is still iffy, as rules have yet to be finalized. But new teams still have a lot of work to do to be on the grid by March.

  • Steven Roy17/06/2009 at 08:14

Seems odd but I guess that is the next time the ISS orbit puts it in the right position

To a certain extent, but there are very significant changes planned for next year, most notably, the refuelling ban. FOTA also want a ban on KERS. Whether or not these are in place is key because it determines the car's weight distribution.

  • Journeyer17/06/2009 at 08:16

sorry can't spell to save my life

You meant evolution, right? Got ya.

  • Chris_Humphreys17/06/2009 at 08:16

Narrower front tyres as well which massively affects weight distribution and aero

  • Chris_Humphreys17/06/2009 at 08:18

Well they add bigger fuel tanks or tune the engine to use less fuel

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)17/06/2009 at 08:19

Most teams, whether existing or new, should have a 2010 design by now in the windtunnel. Even then, this is still iffy, as rules have yet to be finalized. But new teams still have a lot of work to do to be on the grid by March.

Martin Birrane from Lola was quoted as saying they already have a windtunnel model.

And yet they weren't accepted? Turns out Manor Motorsports has a connection with Nick Wirth who is well connected with Max. Big surprise there then!

  • Journeyer17/06/2009 at 08:19

Well they add bigger fuel tanks or tune the engine to use less fuel

They'll need to do both, but especially the former.

  • Rich17/06/2009 at 08:19

USF1 have designed their car in terms of the CFD - they seem to think engineering the parts was less of an issue. I guess teams will need to have got at least to this stage. With a ban on re-fuelling a lot of re-design has to take place. One reason KERS was dropped by FOTA is to package it with the need for increased tank capacity. Both fuel and battery are heavy and need to be as low as possible and there simply is not the space to get an optimal weight distribution when you need to add the appropriate ballast for each track.

  • Chris_Humphreys17/06/2009 at 08:19

    Just shows!

  • Journeyer17/06/2009 at 08:20

And yet they weren't accepted? Turns out Manor Motorsports has a connection with Nick Wirth who is well connected with Max. Big surprise there then!

Joe mentioned that N Technology have a strong connection to the FIA via the WTCC. Yet that wasn't accepted. Connections with Max may not necessarily be the key here.

Don't forget the weight limit has been raised for 2010

  • Steven Roy17/06/2009 at 08:20

Watching the NASA conference on the cancelled shuttle launch and they are saying that it would be possible for them to leak test the vent system. 127 launches and now they have figured they 'could' leak test the system. It must be cheaper to run tests than to cancel two launches.

  • Steven Roy17/06/2009 at 08:21

Well they add bigger fuel tanks or tune the engine to use less fuel

    Bigger tanks

    true

  • Rich17/06/2009 at 08:24

And yet they weren't accepted? Turns out Manor Motorsports has a connection with Nick Wirth who is well connected with Max. Big surprise there then!

It is actually more than that as I pointed out earlier, Nick and Max are business partners They jointly founded Simtek, Max only sold his shares when he became F1 president.

  • Rich17/06/2009 at 08:26

Joe mentioned that N Technology have a strong connection to the FIA via the WTCC. Yet that wasn't accepted. Connections with Max may not necessarily be the key here.

IMHO N-technology should have been on the list, together with USF1 and I would probably have gone for Lola over Prodrive.

Massa and Webber looking at a breakaway series

THey are just saying what their teams want them to say. It is just to re-inforce the fact that regardless what Max says those two teams are aligned with FOTA

  • Rich17/06/2009 at 08:38

Massa and Webber looking at a breakaway series

Drivers have sided with FOTA - so Massa and Webber are simply following the party-line. I think more drivers should voice their opinions. FIA has both overstepped its domain and been grossly incompetent and irregular in its conduct.

  • Journeyer17/06/2009 at 08:39

They are just saying what their teams want them to say. It is just to re-inforce the fact that regardless what Max says those two teams are aligned with FOTA

It's more likely they'll end up in court rather than them just agreeing to race for Max. That said, I thought Mateschitz and Mosley were close? I wonder why they fell out...

As would Alonso, Massa, and probably Raikkonen too. I wonder who will choose to stay in F1. Rosberg is a free agent at the end of this year, I think - if that is the case, would he rather stay in F1 and be the odds-on favorite to become champion - albeit in a shallow field? Or would he rather drive a McLaren or some other car in the breakaway?

Red Bull make beverages remember? ;-)

The amount they spend on both RBR and STR only amounts to a certain chunk of their marketing budget, so if it did go down the pan Mateschitz would just invest it elsewhere instead.

It's different to Williams who survive just to race. Red Bull are there to sell cans of drinks.

Long term yes and introduced gradually - think of all of the job losses it will cause in the industry? I think it is for the teams to agree and then propose to FIA, not for the FIA to regulate and audit.

  • Rich17/06/2009 at 08:52

Sure - but I said Red Bull Racing - what do you do with the factory and Adrian Newey's skills? The fctory was one purpose to design, build and race F1 cars.

But with the FIA short of saying they believe its their divine right to create the rules, they won't agree to that, will they?

That is the problem - they have overstepped their mark. Max has had two recent victories - to hold the reigns of power following his sex scandal and then exiling Ron Dennis from F1. He believes he is invincible - this is why FOTA has to win or pull out. Whatever Max thinks if FOTA teams pull out he has has lost (certainly in monetary terms).

Sure – but I said Red Bull Racing – what do you do with the factory and Adrian Newey’s skills? The fctory was one purpose to design, build and race F1 cars.

Red Bull Technology also design yachts and stuff for the America's cup and similar boating things (I haven't a clue about this stuff admittedly), which is something Newey has been dying to do for years now.

So they can dabble in that, other teams could out-source to them or just sell up.

  • Rich17/06/2009 at 08:58

A budget cap is entirely unworkable.

I am inclined to agree here - but if the teams come up with it have some sort of code of honour it may be an option - but as an enforcement its not going to work.

  • Chris_Humphreys17/06/2009 at 08:58

Christine I have edited the Fun and games page on the wiki but how do you add a page so I can add a link on the fun and gams page to the new page

  • Rich17/06/2009 at 09:05

But I haven't looked at it in ages, may not be up to date.

I am not sure it has changed - I knows Kubes only wanted a year-contract and Nick's ends this year. We know Brawn only signed their drivers for one year, same for Force India and STR. I seem to think Toyota only signed its drivers for the year (again Jarno's is to run out and Timo was re-signed for just the year).

    Code of honour in F1??

The real problem with it even if you believe that the budgets can be accurately assessed is that the FIA say it will take two months after the end of the season to audit the books of all the teams. Assuming that is correct and that no-one appeals that means someone could win the championship and get all the advertising benefit only to be disqualified two or more months later. That is an insane thing to build into a championship.

  • Rich17/06/2009 at 09:09

Yes, hmmmmm. We may lose Red Bull completly. They are only in F1 to sell drinks after all

F1 is the most internationally watched regular sport - so from an international advertising it makes sense. A devalued series with a lot of F3 outfits will not have the same coverage - in which case Red Bull will move - I think they would get more involved in Le Mans!

  • Rich17/06/2009 at 09:13

    Code of honour in F1??

um - well if the alternative is a Max-dictatorship, I do believe both Ferrari and Macca are attempting to be more open and reasonable.

There will be a formula 1 championship next season the only argument is about who runs it. The same cars and teams will race on the same circuits more or less. No F1 team is going to Le Mans or lower single seater series.

I wouldn't be so sure, it became obvious that the other teams found more performance from their engines through the changing of little bits here and there when compared to the Renault engine. Honda on the other hand stayed very much where they were last year.

Beeb must have liked F1 Wolf's idea so much, they came up with their own Silverstone themed quiz.

Anyway, moving back to F1, someone had a great idea on Twitter:

FOTA should agree to cost cuts (by whatever name it's under), then move excess staff to Le Mans.

I actually like that idea - I really do.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)17/06/2009 at 12:01

FOTA should agree to cost cuts (by whatever name it's under), then move excess staff to Le Mans.

Can you expand on that a bit? Because teams are pulling out of Le Mans for lack of funding too, you know...

  • Journeyer17/06/2009 at 12:03

Can you expand on that a bit? Because teams are pulling out of Le Mans for lack of funding too, you know...

The guy who tweeted it didn't go into detail, but it's worth looking into. If the teams really have the money to spend more, why let the people with immense expertise go? Better keep them productive by keeping them in top-level motorsport. And other than F1, only Le Mans can now really be thought of as a pinnacle of motorsport.

The problem with going to any event in Europe, is that one is affordable but I cannot justify coming all the way just to attend one thing, if I'm going that far I'd want to go to lots of places and lots of things and all of a sudden the budget isn't doable. I can walk to the Australian Open from my house in 40 minutes :D

How about French Open - Le Mans - British GP - Wimbledon.

Even without an Olympics, that's a pretty solid list! :)

  • Amy17/06/2009 at 12:38

That's my plan for a certain birthday that I may deny existence of

  • Journeyer17/06/2009 at 12:39

But there's no Olympics there, so no pressure on making it by 2012. You can go even after that and still have a lot to do. :)

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)17/06/2009 at 12:39

I can almost not be bothered to post this, but as it's PatroniseF1...

In an act of predictability so tedious, it may as well have been scripted by Michael Bay, the Formula One Teams' Association is said to have written to the FIA asking for this Friday's entry deadline to be extended to July 1st.

Expensive? This is the UK, everythings cheap...........hmmmm

Actually yeah it would cost a bomb but just the same as a 2 month back packing jaunt through Thailand etc getting lashed every night.........

  • Journeyer17/06/2009 at 12:43

    Goodwood, TdF etc.

Not sure if TdF is still worth watching by then. It's been hit by a lot of problems in recent years.

If Amy doesn't like Le Mans, she can drop that for Goodwood. But will it conflict with Wimbledon?

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)17/06/2009 at 12:43

The Wimbledon twitter had a solution for that:

"Rain at qualifying. Maybe we need a roof over the whole of south London just to be sure."

  • Mattw17/06/2009 at 12:50

Yup – definitely worth looking into. The rivalries would be immense – Audi v Merc v BMW; Peugeot v Renault; Ferrari v the rest!

Back in 99 we have Merc vs Toyota vs BMW vs Audi, and that was an awesome year. The first 4 hours were like a Formula Ford race with cars passing and repassing. Then the Merc had that 'areoplane' accident.

The Toyota was one the the best looking cars ever at Le Mans.

However after 1955 and 1999, we will not see Merc back at Le Mans for a VERY long time unfortunately. A real shame as their 99 car was a bizare thing. A little ungainly looking, it used to bounce all over the place, but it was soooo fast in a stright line. The engine noise was the most surprising thing - it have this big 'america' growl, imagine a hundred Harly Davidsons - but on steriods.

FOTA should agree to cost cuts (by whatever name it’s under), then move excess staff to Le Mans.

It has been suggested by several people that a cost capped F1 team could then have personel and resources avalible for other programs to run in parrel with F1 (Le Mans, WTCC, DTM, WRC - whatever floats the manufacturs boat).

    And perhaps they should have:

    http://www.fia.com/en-GB/mediacentre/pressreleases/f1releases/2009/Documents/2-fia-president-letter-to-fota.pdf

Max says no to a July 1 extension. He proposes a 2009 Concorde agreement and rule changes for 2010 be agreed AFTER they sign for 2010.

He's sending each team a letter. If they sign it, they would have dropped their conditions to enter in 2010.

    Hehe. Good Man.

Don't worry about the pit stop - that place sucks the energy out of you quicker than you can believe. It took me several years before I managed the '24h'. Ultimately, you have to remember that you are there to enjoy youself, and it you are killing yourself trying to stay awake - you are not enjoying it.

It’s called ‘GT1 Corvette’ and you can hear it for miles.

It was similar to the Corvette, but not the same. The Corvette rumbles, the Merc growled - like a mechanical Tremane.

The most OTT noise however came from the old LMP1 Panoz. Sitting in the huge grandstand over the pits, you could feel the whole building tremble as the car came down the pit lane.

It was more a seismic event than an engine noise.

Please to hear the Astons's sounded good. On the 'Screams-like-a-Banshee’ front, the BMW V12 was superb, and as for the old rotary Mazda’s....

  • Mattw17/06/2009 at 14:05

    really? did not know that.

Oh yes. McLaren did not want their cars to race there, because they didn't think they would last the distance. However after pressure from their customers (who owned and ran the cars - McLaren reluctantly produced some strenghtened parts for the race.

Even so, they were not susposed to be fast enouph to complete with the prototypes. But it rained in 95. A lot. This helped reduce the strain in the cars, and it also helped that the only really competitive prototype was crashed early on (by Mario Andretti), and was playing catch up through the race -and it was close in the end.

Beeb must have liked F1 Wolf's idea so much, they came up with their own Silverstone themed quiz.

Much easier. I got 8. Got the last two wrong. I can't do recent F1. Maybe I should spend more time on it.

    Lewis Hamilton

    The current 2010 rule wars

Lewis has a new Union Jack flag helmet for the weekend. Talk about cliche. McLaren marketing fail. Again.

  • Chris_Humphreys17/06/2009 at 14:40

Anyone got the link between Lewis, the WMC, Fota and the 2010 war.

    does it have diamonds?

  • Chris_Humphreys17/06/2009 at 14:44

Have you got the link yet! if you really think about it, it makes sence

  • Journeyer17/06/2009 at 14:44

Anyone got the link between Lewis, the WMC, Fota and the 2010 war.

Lewis' tussle with Alonso in Hungary 07, led to Alonso threatening Ron, but Ron beat him to it by telling the WMSC, who then exclude McLaren.

McLaren's exclusion worries the other teams later about Max's power, which leads them to create FOTA, which in turn demands changes for 2010. Max doesn't like it, and here we are.

  • Amy17/06/2009 at 14:44

    does it have diamonds?

I guess the fact it doesn't is one positive. The press release says "With the yellow surface of his helmet appearing to peel away to reveal a fluttering British flag beneath"

If I hadn't read that, I wouldn't have got that impression from it.

  • Christine17/06/2009 at 14:44

    He is the answer

I saw that yesterday. Load of garbage. It is all Colin Chapman's fault. If he had insisted Jim Clark drive in the F2 race at Hockenheim instead o the sportscar race at Brands Hatch he was originally scheduled to do Clark would not have been killed. Max made his F2 debut that day and had told his family that he was in no real danger despite all the death at that time because he knew what he was doing and wasn't taking unnecessary risks. When Clark died the family asked if Clark didn't know what he was doing or was he taking unnecessary risks? This forced Max into wuitting racing and as a result becoming involved with Bernie.

It doesn't matter what Lewis does there will be a queue of haters lined up to slap him down for it and explain how it is a bad thing. If he built an orphange with all of the best equipment imaginable there would be people saying the kids will be spoiled and not want families because the orphanage is so good and that he only did it for publicity in the first place.

It doesn't bore me - it annoys me.

I find it fascinating. This is far more interesting than the nonsense about cheating, which really turned me off. What annoys me is I can only skim comments and articles until I get more time.

How do the new aero rules at Silverstone and a potential for rain grab you?

Together with Lewis, Jenson Button also will present a new helmet that was developed for a competition for its fans in the website of the proper pilot. The “briefing” of Jenson for its fans also was the GP Britânico and Louise - active commentator of the Sidepodcast - was in according to place (image to the side). It remains the expectation now to discover who was the winner and also new design to be used for Jenson in Silvertone.

If they used the Honda engine this year I would have throught Honda would of asked the FIA if they could upgrade it like Renault did!

wasn't the original deal that both Honda and Renault could upgrade their engines, not just renault?

brilliant, brilliant video from radio 1:

does Goodwood have a set time each year? Wimbledon always starts on the Monday between 20-26 June. Always.

i don't think so...it is a week earlier this year. i think they usually arrange it in between gps. usually close to the british gp

    For someone who’s expecting F1 Apocalypse on Friday, I found this tweet from 5Livef1 rather surprising: {Comment #80}

It doesn't surprise me, simply because it'll take everyone in power another 18 months or so to figure out that Force India has already entered uncapped, which will sink both the FIA and FOTA positions as regards 2010.

  • Bassano Clapper17/06/2009 at 17:40

  • Alianora La Canta17/06/2009 at 17:42

    There only only resolution that could happen this Friday is for FOTA to essentially pull out, otherwise it will be a moving deadline. {Comment #92}

If FOTA pulls out on Friday, there'll be no F1 in 2011 because everyone will be out on their ear.

The FIA will never accept they've lost, especially since the reason why they lost the case was because someone left FOTA in a very specific way.

Therefore we will see a deadline that will probably move further than a typical space probe.

  • Bassano Clapper17/06/2009 at 17:42

  • Alianora La Canta17/06/2009 at 18:07

    I pretty sure it’s not, Alianora may have beaten that before {Comment #522}

I'm not sure whether I have, though given the way I commented before people got fed up of trawling through three-page comments of mine, it is possible.

    How do I find out?

  • RG17/06/2009 at 18:07

how long do you get to answer the questions

As long as you want, obviously not ridiculously long, but you get to change your answer as much as you want until the last question and you send it in.

I am always here. I didn't know about that. Thanks

I saw a trailer earlier about James May doing two space programs on Sunday night which I will probably watch on the iplayer as the first one at least will clash with the live show. He is doing one called space and one called moon. It llooks like he has been doing some astronaut training because there were clips of him in a space suit and on the vomit comet.

No, no ring. If he was asking I most certainly said no!! He's going to India for a year in about a week. I get the impression he was going for the big commitment gesture....

The problem is you had to survive one huge war and a massive depression and just when things were looking up Max's family friends started another war. I am sure a bit of the 20s was great fun if you could just pop in and back out again before it got nasty.

  • Steven Roy17/06/2009 at 18:42

When Katherine and I got engaged I didn't have a ring for her. And she said that it didn't matter she wouldn't mind if she only had party rings.

So when we got back from Italy I went and did the big shop got back to the house and she came out into the hall to inspect the haul and I got down on one knee and rummaged around in the bags and pulled out a packet of party rings. She ate the lot and we were engaged :)

How could she say no when she doesn't know if he asked?

Hmmm the conversation we had when I look back on it could have been him asking and me laughing too much to even speak....

  • Nick17/06/2009 at 18:49

He just doesn't get it, does he?

I guess they would blow anyway without all the testing the other engines have had...

but it doesnt sound like something you should say publicly...

  • Bassano Clapper17/06/2009 at 18:50

Hmmm the conversation we had when I look back on it could have been him asking and me laughing too much to even speak....

Sounds like you'll be fine then

  • Steven Roy17/06/2009 at 18:50

I think the part that might add another angle to this is that I'm 20.....

Yell him you need to see how you get on with his router for a year while he is away before you make any commitment. A year apart at your age can make a big difference

  • Alex Andronov17/06/2009 at 18:50

Hmmm the conversation we had when I look back on it could have been him asking and me laughing too much to even speak....

I should give him a ring.

    (I should stop these now shouldn't I)

  • Bassano Clapper17/06/2009 at 18:51

    Hasn't got a clue

  • Alex Andronov17/06/2009 at 18:52

You'd have to tell me to stop. But it would depend on your tone.

  • Steven Roy17/06/2009 at 18:53

I was referring to the proposer ;)

If he thinks THAT was a proposal, he needs his head slamming in a door....

  • Alex Andronov17/06/2009 at 18:59

    Okay now I'm lost.....?

Don't worry Alison. Sorry we are all getting a bit silly.

I am interested in your situation. My guess is that he was trying to propose. That's pretty much what boys do when they are going away for long stretches of time. And also they generally aren't very good at expressing themselves when they want to say something meaningful.

eg. I have just always wanted to say... um... your... hair... is... bouncy.

translates to... I have just always wanted to say... I love you.

  • Alex Andronov17/06/2009 at 19:00

    I don't know

    Know? Know's on third!

  • Alison17/06/2009 at 19:00

Lol, it's all making a lot more sense now....

  • Bassano Clapper17/06/2009 at 19:01

eg. I have just always wanted to say... um... your... hair... is... bouncy.

translates to... I have just always wanted to say... I love you.

So when you got engaged, were you asking if you could go back to the hotel to watch the GP?

  • Steven Roy17/06/2009 at 19:01

Lol, it's all making a lot more sense now....

Can you explain it to me then

  • Alex Andronov17/06/2009 at 19:02

But without knowing him and completely generalising for a moment what the proposal probably means is... Don't sleep with anyone else while I'm gone.

  • Alex Andronov17/06/2009 at 19:02

Can you explain it to me then

    Me? Me's on first!

    No. Who's on first

    THAT'S WHAT I'M ASKING!

  • Alex Andronov17/06/2009 at 19:04

So when you got engaged, were you asking if you could go back to the hotel to watch the GP?

Um... I wouldn't like to answer that question as any answer I might give may result in me perjuring myself.

  • Bassano Clapper17/06/2009 at 19:04

But without knowing him and completely generalising for a moment what the proposal probably means is... Don't sleep with anyone else while I'm gone.

I dunno really. From what I've learnt and observed, Sony Ericsson handsets are the most common that come in for repair at work, along with Nokia. That and the software on it is shockingly poor.

  • lou17/06/2009 at 21:04

i also like that when you double click when it's on hold that you get information about the song that's playing and not just the play, pause, skip options.

    it's the small things :)

Isn't that the service providers bolting on their software to run over the phones usual software? For instance mines with vodaphone but i've had the vodafone software (icons, wap links etc) removed and it runs alot smoother now

    Yup - that.

  • Alison17/06/2009 at 21:26

They penalised him for cutting the chicane and not giving Kimi the position back enough. Massa was given the win

But he did give the position back.... I just watched it.

  • Bassano Clapper17/06/2009 at 21:29

But he did give the position back.... I just watched it.

Not enough by the stewards reckoning

Gained an advantage by cutting the corner

  • me17/06/2009 at 21:29

But he did give the position back.... I just watched it.

    uh-oh.

  • Journeyer17/06/2009 at 21:29

But he did give the position back.... I just watched it.

That's the tricky bit... He did give the position back, but then he repassed Kimi at the next corner. Basically, Lewis wouldn't have been close enough to repass Kimi if he hadn't cut the chicane.

  • Journeyer17/06/2009 at 21:29

    uh-oh.

    yup... tricky to explain, indeed.

  • Alison17/06/2009 at 21:29

But it looked like he lost control and fell off the road...?

  • Alison17/06/2009 at 21:30

Kimi got a big advantage from half-slingshotting off the runoff a couple corners later

  • lou17/06/2009 at 21:30

oooo!! i love that grand prix! i've watched it way to many times though :)

  • Bassano Clapper17/06/2009 at 21:31

    His car wasn't red though

    How times have changed :)

  • Steven Roy17/06/2009 at 21:31

But he did give the position back.... I just watched it.

See you are knew to F1. You still think the FIA bases its decisions on reality. They hadn't fallen out with Ferrari by that stage. So when Massa was realeased dangerously from the pits in Valencia despite every other case in history including one in the GP2 race that day being given a drive through he was given a time penalty because - quote - it would have been unfair to give him a drive through after he had driven so well - end quote -

  • Journeyer17/06/2009 at 21:31

Kimi got a big advantage from half-slingshotting off the runoff a couple corners later

yes, that is true, but so did Lewis, if I remember correctly...

  • Steven Roy17/06/2009 at 21:32

That's the tricky bit... He did give the position back, but then he repassed Kimi at the next corner. Basically, Lewis wouldn't have been close enough to repass Kimi if he hadn't cut the chicane.

    Rubbish.

There is a camera angle where you can see he decided to go off th road to avoid a collision with Kimi. According to Max leaving the road to avoid an accident is not a good enough excuse

It's around the same time but after it but the FIA has been biased towards Ferrari for decades. That's why it hurts them so much that Luca is putting the boot in now. You would think Max would at least enjoy the pain.

    sidepodspace update

Now that the shuttle launch is postponed until hell freezes over or Max gets voted out NASA plan to launch the LCROSS mission tomorrow at 5:12pm EDT or 12:12 pm UK. This is really two missions which aim to collect info about the moon. You would think if they had already visited the moon they would have some idea but this is NASA.

The Lunar Reconaissance Orbiter hereintofore after known as the LRO will orbit over the poles of the moon looking for water and potential landing sites.

The Lunar Crater Observations and Sensing Spacecraft (LCROSS) will launch the spent final stage of the rocket into a permanently shaded crater and study the ejcta(all the gubbins that is thrown up in the air - except there is no air) to look for water sources. Later in the mission the LCROSS satellite itself will impact the moon's surface.

All this technology and all these years of study and they are going to spend millions of dollars launching great lumps of technology into the moon and watch for a splash. It's like scrapheap challenge.

  • Alex Andronov17/06/2009 at 22:05

Technically though, he did lose -4 points on the last round

Is that because he didn't know Who was on first?

  • RG17/06/2009 at 22:05

    did he diss franck?

he got the Timo questions wrong. Basically, the last round was the Timo round, if you got an answer wrong, you would lose a point

  • Flibster17/06/2009 at 22:05

    Evening everyone.

Anything good happened today or should I just clear all F1 related RSS entries now?

  • Lukeh17/06/2009 at 22:06

he got the Timo questions wrong. Basically, the last round was the Timo round, if you got an answer wrong, you would lose a point

Ah. You need to get up very early in the morning to beat RG on Timo factoids.

  • Steven Roy17/06/2009 at 22:06

    Did RG make Steven lose?

Absolutely last. I don't know my Timo or Super Aguri

  • Alison17/06/2009 at 22:08

You still beat Steven Roy. By a comfortable margin as well

  • Steven Roy17/06/2009 at 22:11

I know Who's on first naturaly

  • Alex Andronov17/06/2009 at 22:11

    *weeps*

There's only one way to deal with this kind of situation...

If I were consoling RG I would say bring out the hulk. But as it's you I think it might be time for the blowtorch.

  • Flibster17/06/2009 at 22:11

That is the most annoying one for sure...

    Grrr!

  • Dan Brunell17/06/2009 at 22:21

Hello sidepodcast-land. What is happening? It is amazing how quiet it is coming into a Grand Prix weekend... perhaps... a little too quiet...

Also, tonight I will be making my quarterly batch of beer. I decided to make an ale this time and call it SidepodAle. It should be ready in time for Monza.

Any suggestions on what type of ale it should be? I was going to go with an Irish Red but can easily change it to another type of ale.

    What options do we have?

  • Steven Roy17/06/2009 at 22:25

I wonder if we could have a white chocolate ale for Christine?

An idea for the Sidepodcast wiki: a music page.

    How about it?

    Do it

  • lou17/06/2009 at 22:28

    How about it?

    like last.fm?

  • Joe17/06/2009 at 22:30

    Do it

Made me lol for some reason.

Just a apage where you can list favourite artists, albums, songs etc, whatever you want. Like the Favourite Drivers And Teams thing.

  • Steven Roy17/06/2009 at 22:30

    like last.fm?

That is why I was asking? If it was people's favourite music etc then last fm is the place for that but if there is some other spin on it then maybe it should be in the wiki.

  • Joe17/06/2009 at 22:31

    like last.fm?

No. We have a last.fm group for that. :P

Actually, we DO have a last.fm group for a reason......but I'll do the page if people like. Wouldn't mind doing it really.

  • Steven Roy17/06/2009 at 22:32

There is no readon not to do a wiki page as well. If you start it off and plug it I am sure others will follow

  • Paul17/06/2009 at 22:41

Will you be posting them out?

  • Dan Brunell17/06/2009 at 22:44

    Sidepodale

    What options do we have?

Let me get my reciepe book out.

*thump of heavy book on my desk*

Have a couple reciepes for for each type of ale. I collect recipes from various sources.

Pale ale - I can make a decent Indian Pale Ale but it would be way too hoppy for Christine's taste.

Light ale - I have a recipe a light ale for it but have never made it.

Irish red ale - The one I usually make at this time for fall. My personal fav.

Brown ale - I have a couple of reciepes but haven't tried them yet. My friend makes these all the time and is really good at making them.

Scotch ales - Never tried making but they are really good.

Belgium or German ales - I can make, but no way...

All the other types of ales require Nirogen to store and I don't have the means to do that.

  • Paul17/06/2009 at 22:45

Irish red ale - The one I usually make at this time for fall. My personal fav.

Never had an Irish Red - sounds interesting.

    Brown ale is always good.

  • Paul17/06/2009 at 22:47

I presume Lukeh will be wipping up some special label ? :D

  • Amy17/06/2009 at 22:48

note to self: go to bed earlier

  • Steven Roy17/06/2009 at 22:49

I have never heard of Irish Red Ale either. I would have to go for Scotch ale

  • Paul17/06/2009 at 22:49

    But.....it's morning.

  • Steven Roy17/06/2009 at 22:50

Dan needs you to vote on which ale he should make. There doesn't seem to be Romulan though

  • Flibster17/06/2009 at 22:51

Yup - most of these would work!

  • Steven Roy17/06/2009 at 22:51

If there are any lurkers out there and yes I mean you Rachel and others. Help Dan out by voting for your favourite in his ale menu. Come on you know you want to get into commenting and this is a nice easy intro

  • Dan Brunell17/06/2009 at 22:51

    From Wikipedia:

"Irish red ale, red ale, or Irish ale gains its slightly reddish colour from the use of a small amount of roasted barley. The term red ale or red beer is used by brewers in countries other than Ireland; however, the name Irish Red is typically used when roasted material is used.

In America the name can describe a darker amber ale, and some breweries may produce a "red" beer that is a lager with caramel colouring."

  • Paul17/06/2009 at 22:52

Yup - most of these would work!

    Hehe!

  • Paul17/06/2009 at 22:52

    Sounds yummy.

  • Dan Brunell17/06/2009 at 22:58

I wish I could use intro because there are some really nice cream, stout, and porter beer recipes that I want to try out.

The one that would be perfect is a chocolate stout. Oh well.

  • Paul17/06/2009 at 22:59

Beer and chocolate together? The only thing missing in pizza, which probably wouldn't go to well I imagine.

  • Paul17/06/2009 at 23:01

    I really wish it wasn't :(

I really think it might be time for you to give up and move to the UK
