It is the longest day, today, the height of summer. It will also be a very long day for our guys out on track, and no doubt for us as well. Also, from here on in, the dark days of winter will be drawing in and it feels that way for Formula 1 as a whole as well, doesn't it? Phew, that was quite the metaphor. Here's some F1 goings on:

  • BMW have officially abandoned KERS on their car for this season. Which is odd considering they are the only team who have been "bigging it up" within the regulations side of things. The return of KERS to the car has been delayed and delayed and now it is gone forever.
  • Nakajima is starting the race today from a career best position of fifth - which is notably above his teammate for the first time. A lot is made of Alonso's dominance over Piquet but so far Rosberg has enjoyed the same teammate comparison statistics - not anymore.
  • Bernie Ecclestone has confirmed completely that Silverstone will make a return if Donington fails to deliver. Which means that Silverstone will make a return. A lot of people said this as soon as the announcement was made, so does Bernie really think he is still fooling people?

That'll do it for now. Join us for live commenting during the race, beforehand for the Parade Lap and afterwards for the live stream of F1 Debrief. It's all go on a race weekend Sunday! I'll see you in the comments.

The Longest Day! Also a good war film.

I like how the longest day falls on a Sunday this year. I don't like the mention of 'dark winter'. It is June. That evil thing doesn't occur until November. As far as I'm concerned it remains Unmentionable until it is upon us.

Yes, sleep now. Sleep good. Night (again) :P

Eurosport commentary legend Martin Haven has invented Speed Pool.

It is like normal pool with two crucial differences:

I've decided against that blog post. Not into writing anything tonight, plus it might get lost given the amount of stuff to be generated tomorrow..

It is a live show on sidepodcast. A bit of music, chat, the odd voicemail and phone call etc. It never lasts long enough though

  • Pat W20/06/2009 at 23:39

bah, the radio I was listening to has stopped playing nice songs I've never heard before and is now talking to someone about them. It is nearly 1am on a Sunday morning, I do not want to hear talking.

Because if I was from the future and had time travel Bernie and Max would have met with a little accident a decade or 5 ago

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)20/06/2009 at 23:42

Just posted on my blog about fuel weights for F1 British GP Qualifying:

    http://f1numbers.wordpress.com/2009/06/21/is-that-fuel-weight-in-pounds-or-kilos/

    Enjoy ;)

  • Steven Roy20/06/2009 at 23:43

Just posted on my blog about fuel weights for F1 British GP Qualifying:

Do you still think Webber is a better qualifier than Vettel?

  • Nick20/06/2009 at 23:43

Because if I was from the future and had time travel Bernie and Max would have met with a little accident a decade or 5 ago

    You raise a valid point.

Although my suspicions will continue to linger in a tiny voice at the back of my head...

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)20/06/2009 at 23:58

Do you still think Webber is a better qualifier than Vettel?

Honestly don't know yet - I will look at it from fuel-corrected perspective when I do.

I've spent the evening figuring out this damn EeeeeeeeeeePC and OpenOffice.

Please note that 'smaller' (the PC) or 'free-er' (Open Office) DO NOT necessarily mean 'better' :(

  • me20/06/2009 at 23:58

wassup sir? we loves our to bits.

Is Open Office not worth the bother then, specifically Excel?

  • Pat W20/06/2009 at 23:59

    err "their Excel equivalent"

  • Nick21/06/2009 at 00:04

Is Open Office not worth the bother then, specifically Excel?

In my experience it depends how heavily you use the product, its much harder to change on programmes you use a lot, as its almost second nature. Changing on programmes you still need to think about to use is a little easier...

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)21/06/2009 at 00:05

wassup sir? we loves our to bits.

It's a bit hard to type on and and the screen is too small for the doo hickey to work with two panes.

Is Open Office not worth the bother then, specifically Excel? err "their Excel equivalent"

It is OK but it's not as good - it's more tricky to use, not as flexible or fast. not great with importing graph styles or macros either:(

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)21/06/2009 at 00:05

It's a bit hard to type on and and the screen is too small for the doo hickey to work with two panes.

ah yeah, the keys are in all the wrong places.

was running doohickey fullscreen on friday and it worked a treat.

  • me21/06/2009 at 00:06

    I mean LCLT, sorry :(

    ahh, yeah. haven't tried that.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)21/06/2009 at 00:10

ah yeah, the keys are in all the wrong places.

Try the fact that it's also a Danish keyboard and it's double trouble.

I bought it cheap so I can blog and comment from the train and also sit with the wife and use it. We tried calling the parents on Skype and they just whinged about the call quality so we ended up going back to the big PC.

Open Office can't do what I want it to do and I still have to use Excel. Boo.

call quality is pretty good for us (check out alex tomorrow on the parade lap, because he'll be coming though that).

don't use any office apps though, sorry. have you considered google docs / google spreadsheet?

Did we see Jake's blog post about the laps with Jenson and Lewis?

"The girl" with Jenson appears to have been Christine Bleakely off The One Show.

  • me21/06/2009 at 00:19

Basically the EeeePC is a fail so far - but the missus thinks it's cute so she can have it...

that's a shame, because it was a massive win in the grandstands 'stone. and it handled itself really well at autosport international too.

i guess it's more of an internet thing, rather than a productivity machine.

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)21/06/2009 at 00:21

Web-based has a way to go before it matches the functionalities.

Google Docs is aimed at sharing stuff rather than in-depth stuff, I reckon.

I'm thinking the panel series is a way off yet? Time to work on it? Assuming you aren't as crazy busy on the off-weekends as you are on the on-weekends...

couple of months i believe. next few weeks are homepage redesign work. and then we'll see where we're at.

on the list is the desktop app and an iphone app. fbfb should be ahead of both of those in the queue methinks.

    sidepodspace update

Just found out that the lunar mission we saw launch a couple of days ago is supposed to arrive at the moon at 5:43am EDT/ 10:43am UK. I can't imagine there will be anything to see but I will read up on the mission before then. The first bit that is due to impact the moon is meant to kick up plumes of dust and stuff 6 miles into the air but I don't think it will look as spectacular as it sounds.

We have another launch later in the week. The GOES-O weather satellite is launching on June 26th. The launch window opens at 6:14pm EDT / 11:14pm UK and closes exactly an hour later.

  • Journeyer21/06/2009 at 01:04

love it, love it, love it.

it's a bit jumpy in terms of car position. but if you read back though the live comments, you can see at the end of q3, all of the people with the iphone app could see webber's lap unfolding and kimi blocking him whereas the tv never showed it.

webber confirmed what happened once it was over, but we had it covered in the comments way before then.

it's worth every penny to me and i'll be buying a season pass on monday.

  • Paul21/06/2009 at 01:08

    How much is that?

20 pounds, I think. Will buy it today, then. :D

Did Kimi get a slap? I'm completly out of the loop this weekend I feel

  • me21/06/2009 at 01:10

    How much is that?

£14.99 for the remainder of the races, or £2.99 per race.

  • Paul21/06/2009 at 01:11

£14.99 for the remainder of the races, or £2.99 per race.

don't think so. i am without qualifying digest today, which usually means i don't have to read every press release.

  • Bassano Clapper21/06/2009 at 01:12

£14.99 for the remainder of the races, or £2.99 per race.

Expensive for the app store but the way it seems to be heading I fear

    The curse strikes again

  • Journeyer21/06/2009 at 01:16

I think they originally announced £20 for an entire season.

    You mean Kimi, right? ;)

  • me21/06/2009 at 01:17

that's true, if you don't already own the app, and buy the season pass at the same time.

next years pricing is anyone's guess.

  • Paul21/06/2009 at 01:17

    You mean Kimi, right? ;)

    Hehe.

I am convinced Webber is cursed and will never win a race.

  • Journeyer21/06/2009 at 01:18

that's true, if you don't already own the app, and buy the season pass at the same time.

They said they'll release an update for OS 3.0. I wonder how they'll release the update - probably from within the app?

  • Journeyer21/06/2009 at 01:24

BTW, Mr C, when you release the SPC iPhone app, I hope it's downloadable from outside the UK. ;)

i downloaded the 1.1 update and it fixed the issue i had opening the app.

So. $37 for the season here, or $6 for the app. Interesting

  • Journeyer21/06/2009 at 01:27

we don't believe in geo-locking anything. ever.

Yay! :D I'm just concerned that if you release it through the iTunes Store, it might become UK-only. Would you be able to release it to all iTunes stores? Or better yet, will it be directly downloadable from here?

has to be from itunes, we can't host it ourselves.

from what i can tell it's easier to say available in "every store", than it is to say "only in x, y and z" stores.

My iPod is playing Felipe Baby by @mrschristine for some reason. For some reason, I find the way she says 'ooh ooh ooh' quite sexy.

Greetings from Tot Hill Service station! I'm about half way between home and Silverstone, so we stopped for breakfast and petrol. Should be a good day. As long as I remember, I'm going to leave a voicemail from the track after the race.

While I remember, do I have to manually refresh the mobile dohickey? It doesn't seem to update. Then again, this is the first time I've used it and moat people are asleep!

From what I can assess, there's the new nose (obviously), some kind from chimney exit from the engine cover, sculpted rear wing endplates instead of straight ones and a wider DDD.

Hi Chris, yay for live updates :)

Re. the mobile commenting - it doesn't refresh yet because it was happening in the middle of typing a comment which screwed things up a bit. So it's been disabled but naturally we're working on fixing it.

    How's the weather holding up?

Red Bull have managed to save a 'whopping' 70 grams of weight from both cars this weekend.

How? By removing the embroidery from both Webber's and Vettel's race suits, that's how! Have a look this afternoon and you'll see that the logos and other features are painted on now.

  • Scott Woodwiss21/06/2009 at 08:28

not sure i have your email

I'll DM it to you on Twitter.

  • Scott in Italy21/06/2009 at 08:29

By removing the embroidery from both Webber's and Vettel's race suits, that's how!

great work. but maybe it'S more about cost than weight. otherwise we'd have them shaving their heads and things right?

what does VT stand for (in prev comments)?

  • Amy21/06/2009 at 08:30

what does VT stand for (in prev comments)?

    videotape

  • Alison21/06/2009 at 08:30

Absolutely! They have been doing some really great opening VTs and they haven't once had Eddie Jordan in them :)

I didn't think he was that bad on yesterday's programme though. In the feature he was in, he almost seemed like a normal human being.

I just wish he wouldn't go on (and on and on and on) every second sentence about how everything relates to his days running Jordan.

  • Alex Andronov21/06/2009 at 08:30

what does VT stand for (in prev comments)?

Video Tape but i means basically a bit of film on a tv show

  • Paul21/06/2009 at 08:31

I hope Coulthard is up for a grid walk again

  • Dank21/06/2009 at 08:32

great work. but maybe it’S more about cost than weight. otherwise we’d have them shaving their heads and things right?

They use the same race suits throughout the course of the year. It's a weight issue.

And also, Webber will have a screw removed from the pin in his leg during the summer break as it wasn't correctly inserted to begin with and has been causing him all manner of grief all season.

  • Alex Andronov21/06/2009 at 08:33

I didn't think he was that bad on yesterday's programme though. In the feature he was in, he almost seemed like a normal human being.

He was better yesterday. And DC is more on top of him now.

I just wish he wouldn't go on (and on and on and on) every second sentence about how everything relates to his days running Jordan.

And do these long subclauses in his questions. When he was interviewing Bernie he started asking a question, then threw in about 3 sentences about Silverstone which clearly he'd been told not to talk about because Jake was going to to that bit, and then told Bernie to ignore that bit and then finished the question.

  • Christine21/06/2009 at 08:35

He's kinda bumbling too. Which was fine for the first couple of shows, but I thought it would have improved by now.

Also, I never realised what a cool word bumbling was before.

  • Alison21/06/2009 at 08:35

    And didgeridoo.

  • Alison21/06/2009 at 08:39

I just don't get what the point of him is. I don't think I've ever heard him give great insights into anything, he doesn't have any specialist knowledge to bring to the table (well none that I'm interested in) and as you've said he's not so good on the presenting/interviewing side of it either....

I just meant that he didn't do anything yesterday that actively annoyed me, which was a pleasant surprise!

he called his brawn mini deal a "gesture" or "contribution" - i forget the exact word but the he was never really suggesting it was a real long term deal. but hey, he'd be disappointed, but he makes shrewd investments so would anyone have wanted to sign a long deal with a company that really looked like it was probably going to be putting a car on the grid that might not finish. credit to brawn - best value for money i've seen in F1 in some time.

i didn't know that. i'm living in a box sometimes ;) we had a business guy (packer) in australia sold a tv network for maybe a billion (?) and then bought it back a few years later for half the price. smart :)

I don't think he was ever going to be to be honest. He doesn't do advertising really. He does stunts that get him in the papers for next to nothing.

It would cost a lot of real money to run an F1 team. Just ask Vijay Mallia. He's having to be in the FIA because he doesn't have the ready cash for running his team. He's borrowed on the basis of being in F1.

  • Paul21/06/2009 at 09:15

Ture, but he does blow cash on stuff he finds interesting. I seem to remember him saying that he knows virgin Galactic wont make a profit for 20 years, and then only if it is very lucky.

I don't know about Vijay, the way he throws money around at his IPL franchise he doesn't look too broke!

That helps the Red Bulls, although that new care might tear up the tires making them 3 stop...

  • Lukeh21/06/2009 at 09:18

Sir Striling was on the Andrew Marr show earlier talking from Silverstone anbd it looked very very cloudy and dull.

I don't know why he's so heavily fueled. Won't that add extra pressure to the tyres in the first stint? I'm new to this whole business but it seems odd for them to split the strategies for their drivers so wildly again. It's like their trying to cause a rift.

I think the idea was to have Webber on pole, then give vettel the chance to catch on strategy.

    Didn't quite work out.

It might just be personal preference, fear of the safety car, or Christian Honer has nightmares about them hitting each other. *he may fear that Vet might get stuck behind Webber, and he isn't the worlds best overtaker (sorry Alex)

My line up, as weird as it will appear to be is as follows:

    Nakajima 1st

    Webber 2nd

    Hamilton 3rd

    Vettel 4th

    Button 5th

    Rosberg 6th

    Massa 7th

    Trulli 8th

    Basically a rehash of Melbourne.

  • Alison21/06/2009 at 09:29

If Nakajima wins I'm giving up on F1!

  • Amy21/06/2009 at 09:30

  • Nick21/06/2009 at 09:31

My line up, as weird as it will appear to be is as follows:

I can see it all happening bar Lewham in third. Unless he gets to do one less lap because he world champion and this is his home race....

  • Paul21/06/2009 at 09:31

I think you're dreaming in Nakajima and Hamilton are podium bound.

I can't see Hamilton in the top 10. My only hope is that Heikki boy this weekend

  • Paul21/06/2009 at 09:32

Hehe. THought you might like that.

Time to step up Heikki !

  • Scott in Italy21/06/2009 at 09:33

You're a good man, Mr Paul.

he might be good, but how realistic is he? Amy - where do you think your boy will come?

So we're all ready to criticise predictions, but who else has got some for us to agree/disagree with?

I've got a feeling Barrichello and vettel will hit each other early on the first lap...

  • Amy21/06/2009 at 09:34

Speaking of Heikki though, I loved this line in the post-qualy press release:

"It’s a pity that Lewis couldn’t improve on his time due to the red flag in the first session as I’m sure he would have joined me in Q2 as well."

If Lewis had improved Heikki would have been 16th and not in Q2. He wouldn't be "joining" him at all.

  • Paul21/06/2009 at 09:35

He'll probably DNF. Or come 12th.

    I'm only predicting top 10.

    Otherwise its:

    1.Vettel

    2. Webber

    3. Jensen (sorry Rubens :-( )

  • Amy21/06/2009 at 09:35

I want to see Rubens or Webber win because I want a different winner. Someone who hasn't won in 5 years or someone who hasn't won at all would be perfect.

  • Nick21/06/2009 at 09:36

If Lewis had improved Heikki would have been 16th and not in Q2. He wouldn't be "joining" him at all.

hehe, oops.... He maybe he is trying to look like the supportive number 2?

as an aussie who has seen webber on tv for 10 years working his way up, this could be a chance, but i'd be backing vettel - i think he's a better driver and is in a better start position (at least for the first lap).

  • Lukeh21/06/2009 at 09:37

yes I can't see Webber beating Vettel unless Seb or his car do something dumb. It's hard to look past Seb on pole + running longer

  • Nick21/06/2009 at 09:38

Bernie said he was underrated at the last race.

That guarantees him a win in the next 5

just make sure your flatmate doesn't pull out the cable for the tv. that's more important than jam. you need a picnic tablecloth to put on your bed for these moments.

Um. I'm just not going there

  • Alison21/06/2009 at 09:40

I've gone completely off Mark Webber since the last race. He was really snidey in some of his interviews. I'd be very happy if the podium finished the way qualy did. Although part of me is still rooting for Jenson to pull something out the bag.

  • Amy21/06/2009 at 09:41

    I warned ya!

its ok, its more on than in because I'm sitting on the duvet cover. Which I was going to wash tomorrow anyway.

  • Scott in Italy21/06/2009 at 09:43

    Why you going to France?

Yeah it's not often i think about the next gp, but I tend to organise my trips around F1 ;) I'm off to bologna (4 hours south) AFTER todays race, then back here for 3 days of meetings, then to suburbs of paris for seeing friends before a work conference in Rennes. should be lots of fun, but i have so much to organise today before all my meetings/trips start.

  • Amy21/06/2009 at 09:44

    Hi all, besides!

    Nope.

Napier produced a few engines that were used in cars. Merlin was a WW2 development.

However, since then someone's put a Merlin in a Rolls Royce car :D

I saw a brilliant example of that earlier this week. There was a long rambling piece somewhere about his being the last British GP and about the great British tradiition in F1 and all the British teams and British world champion drivers. THen a sentence saying this year's championshi is led by England's Jenson Button

    Hi All!!!

Just got in after 3 amazing days of track action, watched the race from Luffield today....

Was it a good GP to watch??

Don't think so, it's not on BBC1 schedule. Red Button/Online only

  • James21/06/2009 at 15:32

    Piquet is happy:

I had a good race today. The car still needs to be improved but the aim is always to beat your teammate and I did that today!

  • Steven Roy21/06/2009 at 15:32

Was it a good GP to watch??

Hey RCC. Glad you enjoyed your weekend.

It was quite interesting and seemed to go quickly but there was not that much memorable about it. It was a shame that Vettel got a big lead so early.

You should know if you are planning on watching the Debrief it will be at 6pm due to Top Gear

  • Jon Waldock21/06/2009 at 15:32

I don't know, but I don't think Alonso was helped by going backwards at the start and being stuck behind Heidfeld and his broken wing for so many laps.

I was great, the noise was unreal. Gotta say the reception for both Brits was amazing, Lewis is defo still the jewel in the eye to public. Not something you'd pick up from the usual coverage. I hear he did doughnuts after the race???

The Stig was out doing demonstration laps with Jade Jagger & Lewis was out doing drifting in a Merc yesterday morning.

Yes he did - I think he did it at Stowe? Could be wrong.

  • Journeyer21/06/2009 at 15:45

I care little for Massa but I am duty bound to support him as long as Rob is there.

There may be some bad blood between the two of them - if I remember correctly, Massa tried to approach Jordan for a 2003 race drive. EJ turned him down because he B&H wanted a British driver.

  • Steven Roy21/06/2009 at 15:45

The Stig was out doing demonstration laps with Jade Jagger & Lewis was out doing drifting in a Merc yesterday morning.

You need to watch the BBC show from today. They put in a load of great features in the hour before the race including Lewis and Jake in one of those 220 mph Merc McLarens on a soaking wet Silverstone. Jake looked terrified and when Jake spun Lewis just sat there like it was nothing.

  • RCC21/06/2009 at 15:50

Gotta say though the crowd organisation this year was pathetic. Me and Kay got to Luffield at about 7.30 this morning and literally found the last spot to put our stuff down. It was due to all the folding chairs there wasn't enough room for everyone in Luffield and people were being turned away regardless of a ticket. The marshalls were really uncaring and told people to lump it or leave it. Now for £100 a ticket you'd expect a place to sit let alone a patch of cold concrete to stand on for 5 hours before the race. Really felt sorry for those turned away. People were getting angry and having a go at people sat down in chairs which isn't on, it's not their fault the organisers messed up not realising everyone will bring a chair this year.

  • Steven Roy21/06/2009 at 15:50

That would be a lot of donuts.

I did propose last year that instead of drive through penalties there should be an area like a secondary pitlane and any driver given a penalty would have to pull of in that area and do a set number of donuts. That way driver skill is rewarded and fans get some fun out of penalties.

  • Journeyer21/06/2009 at 16:06

If Piquet got a penalty he'd never finish the race.

  • Steven Roy21/06/2009 at 16:10

    Absolutely!

It just shows how unfair life is. He spins and gets slaughtered for it. Lewis s[ons after the race and everyone thinks it is great

It just shows how unfair life is. He spins and gets slaughtered for it. Lewis s[ons after the race and everyone thinks it is great

That's true. Maybe I underestimate how well he would do the donuts, considering he is well practiced in the art of spinning.

  • Steven Roy21/06/2009 at 16:12

I want to see Massa do donuts in the wet. He would be great at that

  • Journeyer21/06/2009 at 16:12

Interesting choice of song from the BBC for the post-race montage. After looking it up (and asking around), it seems to have come from the OST for the 2002 movie Road to Perdition.

Just my new cap I bought yesterday.

    ooh :o awesome!

The car on top gear was a roadworking version of those little car machines you see yout kiddies that moves about slightly, like the postman pat machines and whatnot.

  • Jackie21/06/2009 at 19:26

I actually reckon the credit crunch did affect Silverstone. There was no Force India stall or any Toyota stalls and there were a lot less exhibits around the circuit

  • Jackie21/06/2009 at 19:26

The car on top gear was a roadworking version of those little car machines you see yout kiddies that moves about slightly, like the postman pat machines and whatnot.

Ferrari wouldn't give the FFX to a racing driver they don't know, Schumey would have done the lap, hense why he's there

    Night Amy

You are just not cynical enough yet

  • Jon Waldock21/06/2009 at 19:51

You are just not cynical enough yet

There are so many facebook status about it, i've now got the following phrase copied to comment on everyone of them..

"Ferrari wouldn't give the FFX to a racing driver they don't know, Schumey would have done the lap, hense why he's there"

  • me21/06/2009 at 19:54

"Ferrari wouldn't give the FFX to a racing driver they don't know, Schumey would have done the lap, hense why he's there"

i'm not here. nor watching, but presumably that's schumi's own fxx?

  • Jon Waldock21/06/2009 at 19:56

i'm not here. nor watching, but presumably that's schumi's own fxx?

dunno, maybe. Ferrari keep all their FXX's in Marenello, but you'd think on the amount he was earning he's got one

  • me21/06/2009 at 19:56

dunno, maybe. Ferrari keep all their FXX's in Marenello, but you'd think on the amount he was earning he's got one

they gave him one didn't they?

    will google...

  • Scott Woodwiss21/06/2009 at 19:57

Almost home, just got 1 more stop and I get to Wymondham. I trust Top Gear's been enjoyable?

  • me21/06/2009 at 19:59

oh really? that would make sense, didnt know that

    from wikiwhatsit:

"Michael Schumacher was given the last one (number 30) when he retired from Formula One racing at the end of 2006."

    no source mentioned though.

  • Jon Waldock21/06/2009 at 20:00

    no source mentioned though.

awesome, that would make sense. does it say he's allowed to take it home?

  • Steven Roy21/06/2009 at 20:02

awesome, that would make sense. does it say he's allowed to take it home?

I think with everything he did for them he could do pretty much what he liked

  • me21/06/2009 at 20:03

I think with everything he did for them he could do pretty much what he liked

what colour was the one on TG?

"Schumacher's FXX differs from others in that it is the only black FXX without a stripe, it comes with red trim on the wheels, it has matte exhaust tips (regular FXX's have chrome tips), and his personal logo is stitched on the racing seats."

  • Lukeh21/06/2009 at 20:04

    ooooh!! Schuamcher in the Suzuki!

  • Scott Woodwiss21/06/2009 at 20:04

get through London alright? it was a pig for me yesterday

Let's just say I should gave decided to get tim to take me to Kings Cross rather than me deciding to try and go from Liverpool Street which is where he'd taken me back to by accident. But I'm almost home and that's all that matters.

  • Jon Waldock21/06/2009 at 20:04

    ooooh!! Schuamcher in the Suzuki!

    it's a mocking lap :D

  • Lukeh21/06/2009 at 20:04

  • me21/06/2009 at 20:10

Or even at a different time on a sunday, at 9 perhaps?

hehe. am liking that christine is editing already. 6pm is a pain, but it has upsides too.

for the mac? no. apple have monopolised the audio market.

    microsoft-esque. sadly.

  • Steven Roy21/06/2009 at 20:35

Now I have finished eating I will explain.

Mr C and I and some others were having a discussion last night in the comments about all the recent delurkers and the fact that the male:female ratio on this site is unlike any other F1 or motor racing site.

Mr C said it was a shame that the podpanel shows didn't reflect that and everyone who is currently listed on the Next Week's Panellists list is male.

I mentione that I thought the reason may be that people like Gavin and I can talk over people because we have strong opinions and the women on the site may not be as confident. I have noticed that on shows I have been on if there is a silence and Gavin or I or some of the other guys start speaking at the same time as you or Jackie etc you always back down. So we eventually decided that it may be interesting to take all the men out and have an sll female show where we are not talking over you.

This may also help some of the women who have not been on before if they lack confidence.

  • Bassano Clapper21/06/2009 at 20:35

  • me21/06/2009 at 20:38

    Can't you run bootcamp?

no. because then i'd have to as well.

we both have our own versions of logic (fully licensed). i use it to trigger the samples live, then pass the files to christine to edit.

  • me21/06/2009 at 20:39

logic 8 has significant advantages. notably, they knocked £500 off of the asking price. which is a big deal when you're buying a second copy.

There have been quite a few occasions where I have listened back to shows and noticed that a few times I have talked over someone.

I am sure you will be great. You may not believe it but when I was your age I was way more shy than you. At that time I could not have been convinced to do a 20 second Skype call at gunpoint.

If we are going to get some of the newer people to do the show you really have to be on it. It is unfair that there are so many women who comment on the site but they don't get on the shows

I am sure you will be great. You may not believe it but when I was your age I was way more shy than you. At that time I could not have been convinced to do a 20 second Skype call at gunpoint.

Before my first panel I was extremely worried about doing it because I'm very shy in new environments and that, obviously at the time, was very new. But once you get into things it is immensely enjoyable I find no matter how nervous you may be about it

I mean, look at me, I seem to phone up with vociemails every other week with ridiculous ideas and often in a worrying-schizophrenic-esque commentator voice of a certain bbc commentator but still... ;)

Once you overcome your initial shyness about it all I'm sure you'll be fine! I mean you've done panels before and obviously hosted too :) although I am liking the idea of a female panel, it does open up the opinions of formula 1 to a different demographic audience which could be very cool.

  • Flibster21/06/2009 at 20:49

I do have one complaint about top gear tonight...

The power laps board is for cars you can buy and drive on the road and can go over a speed bump - none are true for the Ferrari FXX - yet it's still on the board.

Where as - the Caparo T1, which was faster than the FXX and can go over speed bumps - was taken off. :(

    BOOO!

i'm much better than i used to be, mainly cause of spc really. it's given me the confidence to go on and try different things like going for prefect and stuff. A year or two ago i would never be writing to Jules for example.

The real clincher Lou is that Mr C is going to do the scoring so he has to be on camera

it's not road legal, doesn't have the ability to raise the nose for speed bumps.

Caparo offered at their own expense to put a speed bump anywhere on the top gear track and still take the lap record.

'Stig' was annoyed as he also thought there was another 4 seconds in the car that he couldn't get out as well.

i'll be watching it (it was one of the conditions of going on holiday with my friend :P), we've found that there is a pub that always shows it, so watching the Valencian GP two hours south of Valencia in a Spanish pub/ golf course should be fun :)

just reading through the replies... my favourite:

"...if I were to win this Puma competition, I could be hanging out at Ferrari, Toro Rosso, Red Bull, Renault or BMW!"

rock 'n roll dreams come true.

  • F1Wolf21/06/2009 at 21:42

  • F1Wolf21/06/2009 at 21:44

rock 'n roll dreams come true.

well, it is worth trying entering these contests - look at Scott, or Lou with the helmet or humble me and the ex-ferrari driver :-)

  • Bassano Clapper21/06/2009 at 21:44

This place is quite lucky with F1 competitions isn't it

  • Steven Roy21/06/2009 at 21:45

Evening Steven... I assume you're having a very Spacious evening...

I have never really been jealous of James May before.

  • Scott Woodwiss21/06/2009 at 21:45

rock 'n roll dreams come true.

They do indeed. As I said on the Parade Lap show, massive, massive thanks to Puma for selecting me as the winner. Totally blew me away and it has literally been THE best weekend of my life. Ever. That is going to be pretty hard to top in my lifetime I think. Until the day I drive an F1 car...

Oh lord, don't get me started on that one now...

  • RG - Fisi21/06/2009 at 21:45

This place is quite lucky with F1 competitions isn't it

Does winning touring car tickets count?

  • Alison21/06/2009 at 21:45

Suometimes there are 'blockages', other times there are just filtersto change

Niiiiice.... At least that's probably a normal part of the work.

Does winning touring car tickets count?

    I guess so

  • me21/06/2009 at 21:45

  • RG - Fisi21/06/2009 at 21:46

Oh lord, don't get me started on that one now...

Well what do ya know Scott, I've just come across a link...

Well I haven't, but at least you had a great time.

  • Bassano Clapper21/06/2009 at 21:46

Suometimes there are 'blockages', other times there are just filtersto change

I guess, not pleasant as you can empathise

  • Jon Waldock21/06/2009 at 21:46

Does winning touring car tickets count?

I also won touring car tickets a while back :)

  • RG - Fisi21/06/2009 at 21:47

yup. have i missed something else?

Nah, last year, won them with the Evening Chronicle, saved us on twenty five quid really. We also won Falcons tickets off them, ooh, should enter more of them competitions, I guess I'm the only one doing it.

  • me21/06/2009 at 21:47

I also won touring car tickets a while back :)

    wiki-winners page?

  • Alex Andronov21/06/2009 at 21:47

I have never really been jealous of James May before.

He said in an interview the other day that people constantly banged on about salaries with him, agents and the like and he said, "look I make programs about Cars, wine, beer, space and technology and they bl***dy pay me to do it. I'm the luckiest g!t alive. I don't need money as well." Or words to that effect.

  • Alison21/06/2009 at 21:47

I guess, not pleasant as you can empathise

I just got such a shock!! You're really not expecting that at all.... If it happened again I'd probably lock the door and phone a cleaner. Never mind my bonus....

  • Scott Woodwiss21/06/2009 at 21:48

Tell you something - at the Santander stand, there was a competition running to get a tour of the McLaren Technology Center and, well, I, erm, kinda sorta entered that as well...

Speaking of competitions. Whatever happened to the writing competition for Joe

Does it have to be Motosport related?

I won tickets to New York on a plane we were retiring

[Years ago, stood on the World Trade observation deck, can't do that anymore :( ]

Can't you put someone elses name who hasn't won. Give us a chance and such.

  • Jon Waldock21/06/2009 at 21:49

Nah, last year, won them with the Evening Chronicle, saved us on twenty five quid really. We also won Falcons tickets off them, ooh, should enter more of them competitions, I guess I'm the only one doing it.

I won a John Guest Team Eurotech hat from crash.net, and a Calendar from the same team from btcc.net i believe.

And i won Renault hospitality for testing last year (Steak to DIE for) and then a personal tour round the renault factory by none other than Bradley Lord himself

  • Steven Roy21/06/2009 at 21:50

He said in an interview the other day that people constantly banged on about salaries with him, agents and the like and he said, "look I make programs about Cars, wine, beer, space and technology and they bl***dy pay me to do it. I'm the luckiest g!t alive. I don't need money as well." Or words to that effect.

You have to think being on Top Gear is as good a job as there is. It's not like racing where you have to deliver every day and as soon as you are suspected of being slow you get kicked out.

  • me21/06/2009 at 21:50

Were they serious about not letting it out of Maranello?

    That's a bit... odd

  • Rachel21/06/2009 at 22:00

Were they serious about not letting it out of Maranello?

Schumacher implied he had driven it at other circuits, but it needed two guys, and a laptop doing something before he drove it, so maybe they only let the car out undersupervision?

  • Jon Waldock21/06/2009 at 22:00

Were they serious about not letting it out of Maranello?

It's true, you can take it out for track days or test days and the like, but at hte end of hte day it goes back to the factory

    sidepodspace update

I think I have posted this before but just in case. The lunar mission that was launched a couple of days ago is due to arrive at the moon at 5:43 am EDT / 10:43 UK.

Can't imagine there will be much if anything to see. The bit that impacts the moon should kick up a dust cloud 6 miles high but again unlikely to be much to see.

There is a launch for the GOES-O weather satellite on June 26th. The launch window lasts for exactly an hour starting at 6:14pm EDT / 11:15 pm UK

Gilles Villeneuve said that in the early 80s and I have said it ever since. Trouble is people have been sol high tech and high downforce and think that anything without these is not F1. Every survey the top two answers are high tech and more overtaking. They are mutually exclusive.

The fuel also contained fluorocarbons to increase its lubricity, an oxidizing agent to enable it to burn in the engines

It was the oxidiser I was thinking about. When you think how thin the atmosphere is up there it is amazing the wings don't stall

How high did the Blackbird go?

    80'000+

No one outside of the project really knows - still classified.

    Same as the top speed.

Grr teenaged sisters who teel you they have a lift home, and then ring you at 2330 asking for a lift. home. grr.

    Formula Chocolate Biscuit

    :D

How ace would that name be. Do you think they'd take it seriously if Flav announced it as such?

Does anyone take anything Flav says seriously?

Amazing the engines work at that height

    They're unique engines.

If you get the chance - go to Imperial War Museum - Duxford

American Air Museum has the only SR-71 outside of the USA.

The engines at altitude act partially as normal turbojet engines, but also as ramjets.

As much as 50% of the air flowing into the engines went around the engine and was propelled into the exhaust and burnt with more fuel.

    Absolutely unique.

Same as the fuel. If you take a blowtorch to a puddle of Blackbird fuel, it doesn't burn. Has to be mixed with another chemical at start which produces a green flame on startup. :D

Also, on the ground - the sled leaks like a sieve. it's only at speed and altitude that it all expands and seals up. The hangers had grates in the floor to collect the liquids that dripped out.

  • Paul21/06/2009 at 23:02

It holds all sorts of records. But more than one SR-71 pilot has said that she could do whatever they wanted.

Right you lovely people, i've got to be in bed sharpish. Theres a group of around 30 7 year olds waiting to be introduced to me and if i arrive bleary eyed (but not bushy tailed) then they're going to have a field day with me!

I remember reading about a Concorde flight engineer who put his brief case in a gap between a control panel and a bulkhead. When he tried to get it when he landed it was stuck solid. So when you go so much higher and faster it is amazing they can keep fuel and lubricant in on the ground

There is a famous story of a crew member who put his hat between the engineers panel and the bulkhead - more than enough space in the air.

On the ground - the hat was crushed. :D

Capt put his cap in the gap at altitude and it's stuck there forever now!

    Horrid thing.

I'm sure my Healy would stop leaking once the oil got below gasket level.

    People were getting angry and having a go at people sat down in chairs which isn’t on, it’s not their fault the organisers messed up not realising everyone will bring a chair this year. {Comment #393}

I tried taking a stool with a combined bag. It worked fine on Friday because I only had to sit down for 90 minutes or less at a time. Trying to do the same on Saturday was difficult because so many things ran straight from one event to another that I was sitting down for 2-3 hours at a time and feeling very sore (to the point where I had to watch part of the Porsche and GP2 races sitting on the concrete step despite not being able to see much of anything from that position).

On Sunday I gave up and brought a camping chair. Nearly everyone else had done so from Friday and Dad had given in on Saturday. Luckily we arrived at 6am because if it had been much later, the officials would have had to send us round to the other end of the terrace. It was clearly a health and safety issue as it was nearly impossible for us to get a space (the one we ended up with was, thankfully, a good spot with a clear view of the pit exit and Copse) and within the hour officials were chivvying people to create an aisle so that people could go to the toilet and get food...

To be fair, we were all sent letters saying that only small camping stools and bags fitting underneath them were permitted. The trouble is that nobody seems to have invented a stool that is suitable for the purpose of watching complete Grands Prix days. If someone does (and sells it for a decent price in the venue), they'd make a mint!

I could probably make you one... It would involve doing a life cast of you bottom though - which is not the most dignified of procedures - then making a custom seat from that.

  • Alianora La Canta23/06/2009 at 10:10

    It just shows how unfair life is. He spins and gets slaughtered for it. Lewis s[ons after the race and everyone thinks it is great {Comment #406}

It's a matter of timing and purpose.

Lewis did it after the race to thank everyone who'd come out, supported him and made the atmosphere of the British Grand Prix so great.

Nelson did it in practise because he tried and failed to keep the car going round the corner correctly. (He did it at Copse in Free Practise 1 and you could hear the laughter over the engine noise...)

  • Alianora La Canta23/06/2009 at 10:12

It shouldn't do - just making the seat go out a bit wider without losing too much tension would have made the seat usable for the whole day...

  • Alianora La Canta23/06/2009 at 10:18

    Anyone heard about Max willing to drop charges on the 8 teams? Just caught it on SSN. Parantly he said it to Sky Italia. {Comment #763}

Well, he would have been pretty silly to rely on a contract that Ferrari already claims his organised has reneged upon...

    Errrr... ok then.

    This place is quite lucky with F1 competitions isn’t it {Commnet #827}

I won a Midland F1 cap in mid-2006 - and am still waiting for its delivery. Last I heard it was in the delivery system somewhere between Silverstone, the admin-at-the-time's house and my house...
