Hiya, me again. Marilene is busy having a new internet connection installed as part of a deal that comes with sports on cable, a wise choice if I may say so, and as supersub I'm filling in although I can't promise quite so many bulletpoints.

  • I have the week off work and yesterday I did practically nothing, which was really relaxing! A bit of cleaning, a few odd jobs and a lot of watching ITV4's hour-long Tour de France highlights on the ITV Player, I got through four stages! It has developed into quite the head-to-head psychological battle between Spain's Alberto Contador (very Alonso-like in attitude) and Luxembourg's Andy Schleck (reminds me of Vettel - it's the hair), the rest keep trying but it keeps boiling down to these two. Thankfully the sport is much cleaner than it used to be so I don't feel as bad about watching as I did a few years ago.
  • The other parallel to F1 in Le Tour is the return of the king - but for Michael Schumacher, read Lance Armstrong. Both are 7-time winners of their sport's biggest prize, yet both are putting in entirely anonymous performances that can't even be described as embarrassing because nobody pays them any attention. Lance is rolling in several minutes behind those he used to beat fairly easily, which is equivalent to Schumacher taking the flag up to a minute behind the likes of Button and Alonso - which is exactly what he's doing, of course.
  • Perhaps this fall is why the might of Pedro de la Rosa - who according the Rankings has done nothing notable all year - ran Schumacher surprisingly close in yesterday's Character Cup, which I'd expected to be a walkover given the number of MS fans around! Be sure to vote and comment (in the respective thread) on today's battle between Lewis Hamilton and Vitantonio Liuzzi.
  • As yesterday was Monday it was time for the weekly update to Christine's Rankings, as well as the Tweets of the Week, all done while sorting out a house move. I don't know where you get the energy! Mr C has been busy recording a new podcast with Joe Saward, so look forward to a new Aside With Joe appearing over the next day or so, I certainly am.
  • Lukeh has asked an interesting question - Who is your Who? Pick the Doctor Who you most identify with, the one you feel IS the Doctor. I'm having trouble deciding.
  • Everybody is cordially invited to Sidepodpubbing - August 2010. This was formerly known as 'Pre-Spa drinks' but I got the impression everyone took that to mean it was just for the holiday people, when really it was always intended to be a chance for everyone to catch up with each other, and some of the race-goers just happen to be there too. I made a Wiki page with all the info so just leave a note there if you have any questions and please do let us know on that page if you can make it. Like I say there, this is your chance to meet some of those flying in from around the world!
  • Speaking of Spa, in order to move the planning out of the comments, Lou and I have been working to make the Wiki more suitable, and Lou also set up a Google Wave (I think we've finally found a use for it because it is working swimmingly at the moment - we'll let you know how it goes). If you've got any Spa thoughts please leave them here, or if you're thinking of joining us last-minute you can use these three pages. Alternatively give us a shout and we'll add you to the Wave!

Finally, I'm sure you'll join me in wishing a happy birthday to former Minardi driver Alex Yoong.

Heh, turns out I found quite a bit to link to, after all..

Last thing Alex Yoong did (that I remember) was GP2 Asia in 2008-09

They have some way to go to catch Amazon I think. It probably needs a big, third eRetailer. I'm not sure Barnes & Noble are very big outside of the U.S.

fair enough, speed freak. we only use it for multi-track audio. usb2 is fine for file transfers. wifi is our main transfer mechanism. if it's a background task, it makes no odds to me.

Leaving a message for Mr C. Does Doohickey regularly ping the server even when it's in sleep mode? I'm trying to investigate why my mobile browsing bill tripled.

As a bit of a summary: With multitasking now possible, iOS4 doesn't automatically kill a process when you hit the menu button like it used to in previous versions. So even when I'm not using it, Safari could still be open in the background, right?

  • me20/07/2010 at 02:08

    Morning folks.

hi j. i'm not doing so well at sleeping in this heat. roll on winter.

Leaving a message for Mr C. Does Doohickey regularly ping the server even when it's in sleep mode? I'm trying to investigate why my mobile browsing bill tripled.

realtime doesn't ping our server when sleeping, no. google analytics does keep pinging google though. it's not new, it's been doing it the whole of 2010.

  • me20/07/2010 at 02:10

so the bill has increased since ios4? in that case it could be the issue yep. worse still, is we may not need to sleep realtime any more. the news will be able to handle many times the load of mediatemple. that would mean pinging never stops.

  • amy via alistair20/07/2010 at 02:11

interesting improvement, and that's good on your end. i will need to be more disciplined in closing SPC on my mobile, though.

Not really, it's just dormant, ready to spring back into action

Not many apps do real background processing

Flickr uploads, internet radio. That sort of thing

My other possible suspect is notifications, because it keeps asking for updates from open apps (like Messenger, although I don't use it anywhere near as often) which then uses the mobile 3G. In any case, I've turned it off to be safe.

  • Bassano20/07/2010 at 02:22

I've turned off nearly all notifications. Boxcar gives me Twitter mentions & DMs, which is great

Every other non-core app doesn't need my attention most of the time

  • me20/07/2010 at 02:23

yup. a LOT. so i'm trying to figure out why.

i would be amazed if doohickey made that difference.

doohickey pings every 20 seconds and sleeps after 25 minutes of inactivity. assuming no comments it returns zero bytes of data

google pings every 60 seconds and gives up after 120 minutes (ish). google brings back 35bytes of data each call. that's a maximum of 32kb returned (roughly)

the only number that's of any significance is if comments are posted, and they can vary in length. more comments = more data.

not that then. i don't think we're doing anything else. factbytefactbox sends quite a bit of data, but only for an hour a week.

  • Bassano20/07/2010 at 02:44

My other possible suspect is notifications...

    I'd agree.

Reset your your data counter in Settings>General>Usage and then monitor.

You can adjust some apps and see the data flow accordingly, at the same settings place as above

ventured to grandprix.com after some time, found interesting few days old article on Senna Chandhok Yamamoto HRT . That was posted at the time when Senna was dropped. The article suggests that Karun stickers were already being removed to make place for Sakon for British GP but higher forces moved the sticker guys to Senna's car ...

The whole fair play thing gets a bit ridiculous. They stopped the whole race in an early stage so the schleks would not loose time. I don't think Andy has anything to complain about. He was attacking and his bike had a problem. He wasn't waiting for anyone at the time.

Hehe. It wasn't revolutionary, just interesting. Something along the lines of the fact that James is clearly a walking encyclopedia of F1 but because commentating doesn't come naturally to him it feels forced, and viewers/listeners can feel that and it irks them, even if they don't really know why.

The UK commentary is carried as the default commentary with the world feed. it doesnt neccecarily have to be used, but it comes with it. Apparently lots of people complained when it was James in the ITV days.

It was in the F1 coverage thread on digital spy. If i recall james said something when the itv coverage ended about how great martin had been sticking up for him and not having him replaced.

I think this was before that, I was reading it for a little bit just after the bbc deal was announced.

The BBC do seem to be overkeen to keep him out of the coverage though.

I have a feeling Legard will do next season then call it quits after that,

    #MFC

Oooh, nastily expensive. Microsoft Kinect is going to be £130.

    http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/microsoft-confirms-kinect-price

This is the thing for that Milo video Alex posted last week. The price for the camera was expected to be about £50-60. The whole Kinect thing is supposed to be the Xbox's challenge to the popularity of the Wii but I don;t think that is anywhere near what it should be priced, especially when Kinect + the cheapest version of an Xbox (4GB model) is still going to be £250...

Same reason why anyone would spend silly money on a spoiler for a car, or on sport related accessories or any kind of accessory for an interest. Just different interests for different people.

Although you can get a whole Wii console for the same price as that accessory. #justsaying

The Times paywall seems to be a bit of a disaster. The Times online now has 12% of the readership it had before the paywall and as if that wasn't bad enough some PR people interviewed on the subject said they would avoid contacting the Times about a story because they want the story to get to a big audience. So looks like the Times is losing out on supply and demand.

I have no link for this. The subject has been discussed on a couple of Leo shows recently. The 12% figure apparently comes from a former Times executive who has only recently left the company.

  • me20/07/2010 at 17:00

The Times paywall seems to be a bit of a disaster.

it depends what they're trying to do though. i heard advertisers will pay a lot more for the eyeballs of people already proven to part with cash. that makes the existing times readers a valuable asset.

  • Turkey Machine20/07/2010 at 17:01

it depends what they're trying to do though. i heard advertisers will pay a lot more for the eyeballs of people already proven to part with cash. that makes the existing times readers a valuable asset.

I am sure advertisers will pay for targeted ads but you have to wonder how long the Times can justify the costs of running an online paper for 15,000 people. The other thing that has to be considered is anyone who subscribes to the paper version gets free access to the online version and I am not clear if they are included in the numbers or not.

  • me20/07/2010 at 17:08

I am sure advertisers will pay for targeted ads but you have to wonder how long the Times can justify the costs of running an online paper for 15,000 people.

if the alternate didn't work, maybe this is better than that? e.g. it still looses money, just less money.

  • Steven Roy20/07/2010 at 17:10

if the alternate didn't work, maybe this is better than that? e.g. it still looses money, just less money.

The problem is if PR companies are already avoiding taking stories to them is it worth losing those stories in return for the income. I guess they will let it run for a while and see. Maybe it would be a better paper and more likely to get a paying audience without the kind of stories PR companies supply.

  • me20/07/2010 at 17:25

The problem is if PR companies are already avoiding taking stories to them is it worth losing those stories in return for the income.

maybe PR companies are they ones out of step. which works better, generic blanket promotion, or a targeted intelligent approach. if i was selling anything, times readers would be top of my marketing list right now.

    - early adopters, check

    - happy to pay, check

    - media savvy, check

much better to promote / sell to them over say a generic ad on a GMM site, likely being read by freeloaders who'll believe anything, but pay for nothing. no?

  • Steven Roy20/07/2010 at 17:30

maybe PR companies are they ones out of step. which works better, generic blanket promotion, or a targeted intelligent approach. if i was selling anything, times readers would be top of my marketing list right now.

Depends what you are selling. Anyone selling to a traditional newspaper is looking for a big audience.

Would you really go to the Times or would you go to more specialist publications?

  • me20/07/2010 at 17:32

Depends what you are selling. Anyone selling to a traditional newspaper is looking for a big audience.

yeah, because more people = more ads.

Would you really go to the Times or would you go to more specialist publications?

personally i like niche. so i have autosport, RCE and gp+. i don't subscribe to the times because news doesn't interest me. even free bbc news doesn't interest me. it must interest someone though, because people buy newspapers.

every morning i eat my breakfast and read through sidepodcast comments and twitter.

Murdoch is keen on the paywall because it worked so well for the Wall Street Journal. But that has a different audience and is regarded as a tool for people in finance/stocks etc. It is also paid for by many companies rather than by the people who read it. I can see the same thing work with the Financial Times butnot for a general newspaaper

But wasn't there rules to say that once a driver had taken part in a few F1 races, he couldn't do GP2 (or something like that)?

I have heard variations of that and am not clear on the real rule

  • me20/07/2010 at 18:28

So does this mean d'Ambrosio has been dropped by Renault? His team mate hasn't scored a single point!!

he's looked after by gravity, not renault.

That's unfair. I have volunteered all sorts of people for stuff. I just try to avoid me being volunteered from doing stuff.

  • Steven Roy20/07/2010 at 22:24

you always say that the next day starts after you've gone to bed. so write the daily late then go to bed.. it will technically be sunday when you wake up ;)

To get the spacebar back on usually involves putting the metal bar in the right place first. This is trickier than it looks.

no.. cause i still have the bobble bit... just not the actual bar.... so it's taking me longer to type things cause i have to press the bobble thing, and not the bar....

Put - instead of space then do an edit find change all at the end

dumb question of the day (or yesterday i guess). if you had to describe the change from the day to night in a single word, what is that word?

background is i now need a variable to handle day/night for the weather widget, but i have no idea what that variable should be called. i've so far settled with "sky".

It's a grdual change, not a switch from one state to the other.

    An adjective for the process?

I keep seeing this word lately

  • Jon Waldock20/07/2010 at 23:25

    WHAT?! are you mental?

no....doing a job i wasnt really enjoying and paying to do it...hmm, seems like a no brainer to me.

and before you say it, the "wow im working at an f1 team" bit runs out pretty fast when you aren't enjoying it

  • Steven Roy20/07/2010 at 23:26

There must be a driver's name you could use as the name for a management co.

    Senna-Prost Management

    Ascari-Andretti Managemen

    or

    Monaco Management

    Monaco Ferrari Management

  • me20/07/2010 at 23:26

But that only applies to the time it changes. I think Mr C is talking about the difference between proper daylight and proper darkness because the Singapore race takes place at night

  • Andy Taylor20/07/2010 at 23:27

Nightfall - the onset of night. Check your dictionary app.

    oops.

  • RG20/07/2010 at 23:27

There must be a driver's name you could use as the name for a management co.

Using the Lotus method, name your sons Senna and Prost and you might just get away with it.

I keep seeing this word lately

You mean it IS a real word?

  • Bassano20/07/2010 at 23:28

Mr C: can you explain again in what sense the term would be used

    [as un-html-like as you can]

  • Bassano20/07/2010 at 23:28

You mean it IS a real word?

verb [ trans. ] formal or technical

link (things) together in a chain or series : some words may be concatenated, such that certain sounds are omitted.

ORIGIN late 15th cent. (as an adjective): from late Latin concatenat- ‘linked together,’ from the verb concatenare, from con- ‘together’ + catenare, from catena ‘chain.’

  • Jon Waldock20/07/2010 at 23:29

fair enough. i assumed you'd be there forever.

very much no, it was just a bit of work experience. i was doing some good work and the same stuff as the guys around me, but i would often have to wait for hours just to get my boss to sign off on stuff before i moved onto the next bit. having to sit and do nothing for hours is rather tedius.

Im glad i did it, but that job wasnt for me, if they offered me something a bit more relevant to me then id love to go back

  • Jon Waldock20/07/2010 at 23:29

    it wasn't honda! :(

bingo. the code just displays a weather widget depending on race conditions, so you might enter:

    condition: day [or night]

  • Janna20/07/2010 at 23:39

Hello all. I'm supposed to be sleeping but it's too hot :(

  • me20/07/2010 at 23:39

    condition: day [or night]

condition tells you if it's raining or not. dayrain / daysun makes no sense either.

Just comment trawling. Concatenate is used in Excel formulas to bring the contents of two cells together. I love the word.

Will you be joining us for SidepodPubbing next month?

I hope so. If I don't have a job I'll definitely be there, if I do, it will depend on whether I can take a half day on the Wednesday. Kind of hoping I don't have a job ;)

  • Bassano20/07/2010 at 23:44

    hmm, rotation?

That's the passage of time, generally. Not really specific to time of day
