Surprise!! Don’t you just love surprises! I’m not totally sure how it happened (I’m looking at you Steven) but Gavin is a bit busy so it’s fallen to me to guide you through this lovely Wednesday.  With this being the middle of the week, and tomorrow being Thursday you’d be forgiven for being sad at the thought the weekend was still another 2 days away. However, don’t worry despite Mr C’s love for new daily writers (sorry I’m not new), I’m sure I can find a few links to help you all get through the day smoothly;

  • Let’s start off with a bit of Formula 1 related news that you may or may not have picked up on yesterday.  One of Mr C’s BFF’s is making a comeback! No okay, not to F1, but Grosjean is soon to return to GP2 where he will be replacing Jerome d'Ambrosio at DAMS for the German Grand Prix weekend. So look out for photos of him, something for Mr C to look forward to then. Making an actual F1 return, Fairuz Fauzy will be jumping into the Lotus cockpit for practice on Friday. Not sure which of the two race drivers he will be replacing for that session but it will be worth keeping an eye on.
  • Mr C has been working hard again to bring us some multimedia gifts, so if you find yourself with a spare moment or two you may like to check out Mark Webber’s lap of Hockenheim, I hear it looks lovely in HD too. Mr C has not only provided us with a lovely video we also have a brand new Aside with Joe to listen to! I can’t think of a better way to prepare for the F1 weekend!
  • Also in Sidepodcast news the latest round of the character cup has started and this time it’s Lukeh’s BFF (Bruno) vs the Silver driver (Jaime) in a battle of, well erm character. Yesterday we saw Lewis defeat Tonio, who will be next? Vote here and have your say.

Right, that’s just about it for today, Steven is very kindly writing Sunday’s daily for me so I will leave you all in his capable hands for race day. I hope you all have a lovely day!

hello new day, hello new daily.

  • RG20/07/2010 at 23:44

Just read that as "Mr C has not only provided us with a lovely voice.". Errr.

Do we not have a wiki page to sign up guest daily writers? I swear we do...

Great daily Lou. Far better than I would have done even if it doesn't explain how important belly buttons are in sport

  • me20/07/2010 at 23:47

Dusk or Twilight: Before [or After]

we're describing race conditions though. that would apply to malaysia might you.

Depends how pedantic you want to be

Night from me too, see ya lovely people.

  • Steven Roy20/07/2010 at 23:50

You almost want a sunlight % or something like that because it is the amount of light that matters. Time or Light are the most appropriate but neither is great

  • Bassano20/07/2010 at 23:51

Right, Gillette's series range isn't around on their site

I don't care what they call it but I want a clear - gel-like product not a white opaque one

    :(

We need an Andronov scale for daylight!

this comment really explains it best. i'm basically setting a background colour to blue or black and choosing a moon or a sun.

Yes, but I want it in a shop

  • Steven Roy20/07/2010 at 23:53

We need an Andronov scale for daylight!

That could get really confusing. It is 74 Andronovs hot, 36 Andronovs bright and there have been 7.5 Andronovs of rain

  • Janna20/07/2010 at 23:53

Nicely breathed by now, I think

I will have a word with her tomorrow night. I have given her some suggestions for her photography blog that doesn't exist yet. Somehow suggestions are different from volunteering

  • Janna21/07/2010 at 00:15

Mr C, I've been looking but I can't find anything that describes both day & night except a Greek word Nychthemeron which means a period of 24 hours. The only other thing I can think of is using "Light" and then having "Sun" or "Moon" but it's not really correct. Sorry I can't be of more help.

  • me21/07/2010 at 00:15

    I blog, on a micro scale :)

    so does lou

  • Steven Roy21/07/2010 at 00:15

Good point. Have you considered a blog Bassano? There are a great many advantages to having one

  • Bassano21/07/2010 at 00:15

says the man with no blog?

But if I did have one, I would expect grief for leaving it dormant.

Especially if I were as talented as our young snapper

I will pester her tomorrow :)

    I have

    It was a short process

  • Steven Roy21/07/2010 at 00:16

She is in London tomorrow. She has updated her Flickr account to be fair with loads of great Goodwood photos so it is not as if sh has not been productive

  • Steven Roy21/07/2010 at 00:17

  • Janna21/07/2010 at 00:17

This is unacceptable. A-levels are no excuse

What I think is even more unacceptable was that I discovered this evening that not only has lou not seen Back to the Future but Lukeh has never seen House. *Sits in rocking chair* the youth of today *tut tut*

  • me21/07/2010 at 00:18

The only other thing I can think of is using "Light" and then having "Sun" or "Moon" but it's not really correct. Sorry I can't be of more help.

everyone has been more than helpful. i just didn't want to miss an obvious naming convention due to lack of knowledge really.

for example, i didn't know pull-quotes were called pull-quotes when they were implemented on the site, so i called the variable "blockquote", which means something else entirely. was just making sure nothing was amiss before i carried on.

  • Bassano21/07/2010 at 00:18

She is in London tomorrow. She has updated her Flickr account to be fair with loads of great Goodwood photos so it is not as if sh has not been productive

That is very true, all credit to her

    Both are inexcusable

Well, I was being facetious [and you do have a point]

I was also avoiding tennis & continual football comments as well as failing to complete a single guest post

  • Bassano21/07/2010 at 00:22

So you just need a name to get it started?

    Do non-blogs need a name?

  • Steven Roy21/07/2010 at 00:23

    Do non-blogs need a name?

Having your own blog would mean you could get your views across without the football and tennis getting in the way

  • me21/07/2010 at 00:23

Well, I was being facetious [and you do have a point]

lou's my favourite today, i shall not here a word against her ;)

I was also avoiding tennis & continual football comments as well as failing to complete a single guest post

there was no football though. only in selected posts. it was awesome.

  • Janna21/07/2010 at 00:25

She is Über Awesome, I will agree

there was no football though. only in selected posts. it was awesome.

My workflow is doohickey, it upsets The Force when I'm in LCLT. I don't mind staying away when folk are enjoying a unique event as the world cup. [as was often in the pub watching it]

  • me21/07/2010 at 00:27

    I over-tweet in those instances :)

Well, I really must go & try this sleeping thing again. I actually have to get up in the morning as I've got a hospice meeting at 10am. I'm definitely reverting to my student days when anything that required attendance before lunchtime was considered early. Comment with you all later.

I wish I could be sleeping. So tired :(

I must be getting old. I've not handled the transition from 7's to Mon-Fri very well.

I seem to be getting less than 5hrs per night not feeling sleepy, for the past two weeks

Usually it really catches up with me

  • Amy21/07/2010 at 00:50

But after the back to back races there is a long gap hooray! And then there is 3 i don't have to stay up for because i will be AT them. Then japan and south korea which are afternoon races for me. So no staying up until brazil!

  • Pat W21/07/2010 at 00:58

  • Pat W21/07/2010 at 01:14

one of the geatest dvds i own, possibly one of the only movies whose opening paragraph on wikipedia says "it is considered to be one of the worst films ever made"

I'm trying to think of terrible films but I've had some wine, which doesn't aid memory

    - Legally Blonde, though that seems to depend on gender

    - Equilibrium

    - Tape

    Hi Leigh

  • Bassano21/07/2010 at 01:22

I haven't seen any of the IMDB Bottom 100

    Part of me is glad

I do love my art films, but that wasn't artistic or insightful - it was garbage. A sick flick for the sake of it

I haven't seen any of the IMDB Bottom 100

    I tell a lie

Another Nine & a Half Weeks

That was pretty bad but that genre doesn't really bode well, artistically

For someone who worked in a video store as a teenager, I'm starting to realise I must've chosen well back then :)

There was that Rik Mayall one about the hotel. They tried to do the 'Bottom' TV series but in a movie and with different but similar characters. It was awful.

The TV series was funny, a bit puerile but that was the style of the time. Did not translate to a film at.all.

I love the work that goes into them - truly amazing jobs and I have no problem picking them up as a result. As a sidenote, apparently classic Who sales are staying pretty steady mainly because of fandom's obsession....

  • Leigh O'Gorman21/07/2010 at 06:07

We went to a pier last night and swam, drank and had BBQ dinner. Very nice...

    Lovely

It's tough, but his results since he finished British F3 two years ago haven't been great. Another in a long list of disposed Red Bull drivers

    :/

  • RubberGoat21/07/2010 at 06:09

Just saw the Brendan Hartley bit on Joe's - it's sad, but not unexpected I'm afraid

Yeah probably. I'm a bit miffed about it and TBH, another reason why I'm really starting to dislike Red Bull.

Young, in need of sponsorship... yeah OK, perfect for Red Bull to develop, so he becomes wholly reliant on them. Then when he has one bad year they'll cut him loose and he won't know what to do.

I don't agree with Red Bull's decisions to cut these guys loose... why not keep them as reserve drivers or loan them out? Porsche have done that (to Audi, for example) and when Porsche return to Le Mans they'll have the guys to drive the car...

I would be worried about getting an encouragement or "can do better" award

  • lou21/07/2010 at 10:28

we don't know what the prizes are yet, I'll let you know. It's optional to attend, I'm only going for the finger food.

;D we didn't get any finger food... Just silly boring speeches and the privilege of sitting in a boiling room for 3 hours... And I missed quali for that

  • lou21/07/2010 at 10:29

    Lukeh is here! Bye!!!xxx

ahh, high school prize giving. I still get my school song stuck in my head sometimes, it scares me. But in 7th form I did get the biggest trophy out of everyone :D

  • RubberGoat21/07/2010 at 10:35

Hardly. It had Eddie Irvine, Adam Cooper and Chris Rea in the studio. F1Badger made a guest appearance and there were various interviews with Christian Horner, Nigel Mansell, Nick Fry and a couple of others... Decent talk but nothing special.

bet 5live are cacking themselves ;)

    Lots of LG adverts too...

  • F1Wolf21/07/2010 at 10:36

points in rankings should be deducted for mentioning steve slater :-)

and further points down for sanjeev palar ... come on, that guy talks to himself :-)

    Umm...

he will be back, same as Senna is and same as Yamamoto will be. But they will not all race in all races ... They may even share some space with Klien if he has any money in the pocket.... Money talks bull... walks unfortunately

I do remember Andrea Moda trying the same thing in the early '90's, but FIA told them to sort out their drivers or get out.

    Alas, they are no more.....

we didn't bury it, or throw it into the sea and it still works today. it even outlasted honda f1. am more than happy to go film us doing something similar with ipads when we have a spare weekend, if that makes people happy.

The sand only really becomes a problem for me when ive been in the sea and it all sticks. then its on the towel and there is no escape then!

it was HD when not many others were. it's old now, still uses little tapes, but it survived the beach and it survived two camping trips with honda (one of which was a cardboard bread bin... just saying).

my point is, technology is resilient.

  • Turkey Machine21/07/2010 at 14:40

Yes actually it won't sign in on my phone

    Found out why.

Telehouse North aka the largest Internet exchange in the world had a power cut which knocked out many Internet services, Skype included. Consequently there wasn't enough bandwidth to go around and no amount of QoS will help several hundred Gigabits a second of traffic going through a pipe.

I'd best go back to work now.....

Surprisingly I've not watched a lot of telly. The World At War was on yesterday, that's good.

I am a bit bored. But that's because I'm procrastinating a long to-do list. There's a pile of laundry to do, I started it yesterday...

I saw some of the comments earlier on about Karun buying the Daily Mail. Looks like he received a few tweets on the same subject and his reply suggests that he got it as a freebie from the lounge he was in and had the choice of the Mail or L'Équipe which is written in a language he doesn't understand.

He used so many capitals it could be Tim has hacked his twitter

How are you? Did you get ducks yet?

    :(

No. I keep an eye on my roadside ducks though! I think I should just take them. They'd clearly be happier in my garden than they are beside a dual carriageway!

  • jpancoast21/07/2010 at 16:49

I like working at home. But not so much when my wife is working at home at the same time. Don't get me wrong, I love her very much.

Unfortunately our definitions of an acceptable volume level are different. Rage Against the Machine can only be played LOUD, honey!

It would be a lot safer for them.

  • Alison21/07/2010 at 16:51

I think so. I should put a lead on the mummy duck. I'm sure the rest would all follow in their little line. It's adorable!

I bring it on myself.... I've been saving since January basically! It's my fault though, I keep spending it on holidays :P

I keep spending on silly things. I just went to the shop to get some wine and cereal and came back with that plus pizza and smoothies, just three days after getting other shopping.. Hand to mouth doesn't work for money saving. :)

Quite a few tweets flying around today about another Pitpass screw up. Seems they have had to post a retraction to a previous slightly libelous story about Alan Donnelly.

    tyre lessons from lucas:

Hardest - Pros: very consistent during race. Cons: difficult to warm up, low grip level. To consider: how hot weather will be.

Softest - Pros: high grip 1 lap, easy to warm up, good for the start. Cons: high wear, might overheat, slow long run. To consider: track grip.

    What's the worst film you have ever seen? {Comment #121}

At the cinema, it was Beethoven's 2nd. It's the only item of visual media I've seen where I've cried out of boredom and frustration - and I was in its target demographic back then!

On the TV, I've seen lots of films where I've walked out before the end of the first scene, so I couldn't really name one.

    I haven't seen any of the IMDB Bottom 100 {Comment #124}

I may have seen some of Troll 2 and Son of the Mask. I think they were in the "films I saw on TV and walked out on quickly" category. Catwoman looked vaguely interesting (saw part of it on the TV at the weekend while eating dinner, but was no match for the LMS I had on my computer at that point).

Interesting. I would think the only reason they are running Yamamoto is because he has sponsors putting cash in. If they were trying to impress Toyota they would be running someone with a connection to Toyota

Could be win win - get money from Yamamoto and win brownie points from Toyota for using their Japanese driver.

Karun has taken it very well (rather better than Senna).

  • Steven Roy21/07/2010 at 20:50

I am sure Toyota are aware of the flack Honda got when Super Aguri went bust and Sato lost his seat. Why would Toyota do that to themselves?

Karun has taken it very well (rather better than Senna).

He didn't get just a few hours notice after having spent the day walking the track with his engineers.

  • Red Dog21/07/2010 at 21:08

    so do i.

    go Heidfeld!

Actually it was Nico I meant, still think Nick and Nico would be an awesome team and they might actually catch Ferrari!

  • Jon Waldock21/07/2010 at 21:09

He said he did. And Rubens needed a new one. You think they were lying?

I don't think they were lying, but i would be surprised if they only used the one monocoque for the whole season.

  • lou21/07/2010 at 21:09

also, i would be very surprised if it was just "jensons car" and "rubens car", they may have started the season like that but its highly likely that the used each others chassis during the season

that is a good point, i do, however remember reading that Rubens got the third chassis in or just after Valencia.. because Jenson was confident in his. So they retired Rubens chassis and Jenson's did the whole season... i swear they made a huge thing of this?.. but you're right.. it is however easier for me to have 'jenson's car' and 'rubens car' :)

  • Alison21/07/2010 at 21:09

I don't think they were lying, but i would be surprised if they only used the one monocoque for the whole season.

I think they were really missing the $$$

  • Red Dog21/07/2010 at 21:09

He said he did. And Rubens needed a new one. You think they were lying?

My understanding is they only used three full cars the entire season, Jenson one and Rubens two.

  • James21/07/2010 at 21:10

I don't think they were lying, but i would be surprised if they only used the one monocoque for the whole season.

Fernando used the same chassis during 2006. I have more reason not to believe that ;)

  • lou21/07/2010 at 21:10

Did you see this comment after you went to bed last night?

yes. i have a blog post i'll probably end up publishing in the next few hours that i wrote on the train. :)

  • lou21/07/2010 at 21:11

at least he won't paint it grey (probably)

hehe nahh he likes yellow remember... he had a helmet livery dedicated to the colour ;)

  • James21/07/2010 at 21:12

The same one Button used last year?

heh noooo. I meant the R26, but there is more room for debate surrounding that, in my opinion.

When they started the season I think both drivers had yellow paint jobs and I thought it was very supportive!

yeah they did. it was originally to show their thanks to the team. then Rubens swapped between the two all season. Jenson had his special silverstone helmet but apart from that he had the yellow one.

Noooo a mummy with 5 babies about that size. They live beside a dual carriageway and I caught them trying to cross it once :S :S :S

My plan was to kidnap the mum and the babies would just follow in their little ducky line.

fair enough.. i didn't mean it like that. don't worry i'm not going to go crashing into people. i suppose the only time we ever meet animals are on quiet country roads and there is usually plenty of time to break. - thank god.

    red nose beak ducks...

Oh I don't know. I do know they were babies though.

  • Alison21/07/2010 at 23:01

I already did, that's why they said it! :P

I didn't swerve. I was overtaking a bus on a dual carriageway and was going to pull back over in front of the bus, saw the ducks and stayed in the lane I was in. It wasn't dangerous. I then saw them run crazy fast out the way of the bus.

I have since seen them playing on the other side of the road. I'll be angry if I see them trying to cross again!

  • lou21/07/2010 at 23:01
