Congratulations everyone, we've made it to the 200th day of 2010. Give yourselves a pat on the back, 200 days since New Years Day. Where on earth has the time gone? We are half way through the F1 season and have witnessed the World Cup, Wimbledon and of course, the Open Championship of golf. (Promise, this is the last mention of the sport until the Ryder Cup). And you know what all these posts have required? Guest posters like myself. Mrs C pays her tribute and I'd love to say thanks to them for allowing me to write the daily (even if this one is on course to be so very late). So, to the bulletpoints:
- Of course, the fantastic Character Cup is still going on this site. Yesterday saw Jenson Button trounce Adrian Sutil to set up an exciting Second Round tie with none other than former teammate Rubens Barrichello. The current tie is between the two returnees of Michael Schumacher and Pedro de la Rosa. Of course I don't want to influence voting but if you don't vote for Pedro you are crazy. And do check out the lovely and beautiful wiki page that goes along with this. Comeback.
- There was more guest postery from Leigh, as he went from an essay to a quick newsbite of last nights IRL race. By all accounts it was a poor race, with too many yellows apparantly. Stoppage.
- Can I go one week without mentioning Tai Woffinden? No, no I can't. Why? Well it is the Speedway World Cup this weekend and Britain have every chance of finishing third in the race-off. Like every single year. No matter its usually a whole load of fun and five men going all guns for their country. And Finland are in it this year too, just for the Finnish fans out there. There's just a 99% chance of them being knocked out in the semi-finals and being dead last. Outsiders.
And if speedway doesn't float your boat, well, Formula 1 decides to come at us once again for the German Grand Prix at the much worse Hockenheim circuit. Should just stay at the Nurburgring I say. And if thats just too far away for you, well you can always look forward to the European Championships of Fencing from Leipzeg. It'll probably be on Eurosport.
Just before you stop reading and start to comment, remember that today marks the anniversary of the incident which cost the life of Formula 2 driver Henry Surtees. Spare a thought.
hiiii R.G daily :)
How time flies - one year since Henry Surtees sad passing. ...and then there was that monumental accident at Brands yesterday too for the Seat Eurocup race
Mental.
Good daily RG
:)
It's Monday already?
Not that much further around the circuit either. Brands needs to sort out it's safety. I love the openness of the circuit but you just can't have those kind of speeds on a circuit with so little barriers.
Is RG still around? am looking into making a wiki discussion page..am wanting to get this okay'd by him as he knows much more about it than me.
Hi.
I would say its okay...as long as you know what you are doing because I have no idea myself...
Amy
Did you see Heikki's new toy?
http://www.flickr.com/photos/officialkovalainen/4805249017/
He knows it needs to be dark right?
To bring Amy into this daily, i think wave might be the way to go...am going to try and great a wave or whatever it's called and try that and the wiki... we'll only know what works if we try it, and i don't want to upset anyone by discussing Spa or anything. Doohickey is a happy awesome place with lots of awesome people who all deserve to be happy and not left out or annoyed by any comments. Spa is going to be great, but i can imagine 6 weeks of comments about planning it might get ever so slightly tedious.
No idea
yay monday!
i am hoping to finally see toy story 3 today after trying the last 2 mondays and failing :D
i have no idea either! i was hoping you would know.. if i make a mess of it.. it can be deleted right?
I'd assume so...
awesome!
i've not tried with the new wiki yet. please don't kill me if i break it..
It's hard to break a wiki
Then call me crazy. :P
Morning.
right so... the wiki hates me.. and it's taken me ages... but i think i've managed to make a discussion page within the right section of the Wiki...
http://sidepodcast.wikia.com/wiki/Talk:Spa_Grand_Prix_2010
i see no reason why it can't work. seems like a good place for discussions, i'll be adding a google wave though. just so we have everything covered. i hope mrs C doesn't mind me creating the discussion page..
Morning crazy person ;)
:D Ha! How goes it?
Do I have to register for the new wiki or are the old details carried over?
morning.
THe page looks good.
I do believe new registration is required.
you have to register. only takes a minute, no confirmation emails needed or anything. it's almost too easy :)
Grrr!
Thanks for the info RG

who would have thought.... another short post from me
:)
so the commenting on the Wiki is confusing... but i think we can get the hang of it. :)
Added
It looks good.
Feels like I'm communicating from 1995 :)
night everyone - early start
:)
Hi & bye Leigh
Hi Journeyer, btw
:D i like it.
i like the idea of wave too. mainly because we can make sure everyone who is going to Spa is included but if they aren't really into the planning bit and only occasionally want to have a quick catch up of discussions (like Lukeh) they can just open Wave when they want.
And to Mr Roy, of course
night Leigh!
See ya.
Night Leigh.
Party like it's 1995? :D
I have no idea if Google Wave will work on an iPad or iPhone
I think it's probably witchcraft, personally ;)
Yes, it works there. IIRC, Google made an iPhone-friendly page.
well if i could have your wave info we'll find out :) it's telling me i can add any email address to the wave so it should be easy.
Alternatively, I now have Skype chat open untill the end of August
Well, use my email address
do i have that? :)
Should do
Have added you now to something, it could be wavey. Don't know :)
What did I do?
I think he just said hello to you. ;)
not a fan of the PGA Championship, then?
It's a good few hours late for that since we have both been here all night
Google Wave IS witchcraft, I knew it!
I'm on holiday then.
it's very strange. but i kinda like it.
i couldn't sleep. but i now know exactly why i have a problem with spa talk on this site. it is absolutely non-inclusive. it's a conversation between the people who are going (the have's) and not inclusive of the people who are not (the have nots).
that's the opposite of everything we've ever tried to do with sidepodcast.
here's an example of how the conversation earlier should have gone...
personX: "a few of us are going on a long road trip, would the comments like to suggest some songs for us? we promise to make a playlist and play anything you suggest all the way there."
^^that is the sidepodcast way^^
not... "us three are going on a road trip, lets discuss between ourselves what music WE will listen too in OUR car."
It was kind of a 'hello again' :)
It's the sidepodcast way
Hello again then
bloody site ;)
eureka moment, i see. :D
but i do see your point. :)
:D
it was. and now i can sleep.
Monster creation, at it's finest ;)
nice wiki-work lou.
good night mr c.
Is that a Will Smith song?
ahh yes. okay, that does make sense mr c.
wiki page is set up, as is the wave.
personX: "a few of us are going on a long road trip, would the comments like to suggest some songs for us? we promise to make a playlist and play anything you suggest all the way there."
^^that is the sidepodcast way^^
i like this idea alot. Closer to the time we should do this, and then we can comment reactions to the songs as they are played on the journey, involving the comments and making them part of the weekend too :)
not that this would be the only way the comments would be involved of course :)
and now i'm interested in the spa trip. easy.
I love wikipedia. It is quite incredible how a couple of words can be added to a good article and make you question every word of it. Unfortunately the one I have just found is not suitable for here
*hugs mr c*
i need to work out internet roaming but i would love to be able to say to the comments something like... i'm looking for an aim for today photo wise... do you have suggestions?..
would help me for things when i'm older like deadlines and working to a brief.. and i could probably get a blog post or two out of it... that's if the comments would find that interesting.
i think i hate today. stupid monday
why? i had an AWESOME sunday night, which may explain my good mood this monday morning.
I have a good one for you and it could help get traffic to your photography website once Lukeh sorts it out. I will DM you on twitter so it is a surprise to everyone else if you go ahead with it.
Amy, check your email
awesome! :) i look forward to it.
roaming will be expensive, but that would be awesome. before then you could find out some classic pics of spa and ask people which pics stand out the most, and figure out where you should stand to recreate them.
anyhow. i must try and sleep again.
I'm not sure we have time to rob a bank
oooh my uni does something very similar with famous photographs and london... i like it!
night mr c!
hehehe! :)
Have DMd
Good night
i went to do work and all my work is stupid stuff i wouldnt have to do if other people did their jobs properly. and my phone isnt working. and people keep reading alistair oer my shoulder. and im doing a 10 hour shift so home feels very very far away. bring on tuesday!
People suck
#CreditToBillHicks
right, bed time. I have had a very awesome suggestion from Steven! can't wait to attempt it. fun times for the comments ahead.
however i now must sleep, it's already 2am, but i feel that the Spa thing is a little more sorted now. night all, and i hope work goes okay Amy!!
xx
Night Lou. Glad you liked the suggestion
Night Lou
Well, Google Wave really is an odd thing but it's way past this tired boy's bedtime
G'night to the night owls and those in far off places
Constructive couple of hours.
Lou kindly set up a Google Wave so Spa people can get excited about the holiday in private. Also she made this wiki talk page, I haven't worked out how it is different to a normal wiki page but it is another space for notes.
I made an infobox on the main Spa page and updated the travel one with more useful things than were there before.
I think between us we're getting somewhere.
Red wine drained, tunes ending, bed I think.. Not sure what I'm doing Monday.

Tagliani goes mental at Scheckter post-race at Toronto
http://www.thestar.com/sports/autoracing/article/837290--feschuk-tagliani-vs-scheckter-nasty-sideshow-at-indy
I forgot to say i have Yas tickets, (x2) :)
The 3 good grandstands are sold out, so i had to settle for the end of the 2nd straight, managed to get the front row though.
not sure if that is a good thing or not, i should be at the end of the braking area and see them go though the chicane though
hotel plan didn't work?
Noo i was way to late!
I cant belive how many tickets they have sold at the prices they are charging though
Who's this for?? *grumpy face*
I'll go if you won't ;)
I havent decided yet!
may be all well and good now, the question is how long will that last. All the most expensive grandstands were sold out in Singapore for the first race. A year on I could roam around and sit more less anywhere I wished around Turns 1,2,3. Big chunks of those grandstands were totally empty ...
for four figures I'm not surprised!
I think they have deliberatly kept the number of grandstands low, its only a 50,000 capacity
But the prices they are charging are huge compared to other events here, which are often heavily subsidised.
I wonder if people have bought tickets asuming the big concerts will be happening again, i havent hard anything yet though
maybe everyone has bought 2 tickets when they don't have anyone to take :D
Hehehe :D
Hehe, I have plently of people to take!
Today is trying my patience, I really really want my car and everyone i need to do things to get possesion of it today seem to be on a go slow. :( :( :(
Morning all.
Today?? Ooooooh :D
hola
Morning :)
Just catching up on the overnight stuff.
I set it up so that you don't *have* to register to post on the wiki, but you can set up your account again if you like. I figured that was a good compromise.
It was supposed to be, but it wont happen now, i suspect it will be in 2-3 days.
Morning Christine
can't believe it has been a year already since the Surtees and Massa accidents....
Especially considering the crash at Brands yesterday - silly bubble car vaulting over the barriers like that! Glad no-one was hurt!
yea, that makes me think twice about my choice of seat for Macau this year
I saw an odd picture in a Swedish newspaper yesterday - it was an Opel Corsa wedged into some sort of barn by the side of the road...
...Only the impact was about 6 feet off the ground! Does anyone have any more info on this?
morning folks
Had nothing to do for an hour yesterday so I played tourist. Found this http://twitpic.com/26ffr5
Ooh, she's a star.
If someone left a pebble on it, would that make her a rock star? :P
yes, and her star right next to the statue of another guy who could kick :-)

not happy, just found out someone inserted piece of malware script into my wordpress installation ... security #fail
ughhh... bummer

well, haven't seen this one before but there has been lots of talk about all over the place for some time
It really is terrible software wordpress self hosted...

Ping: http://sidepodcast.com/2010/07/19/tweets-of-the-week-all-change-on-the-driver-front/
Hey folks
Does anyone have any questions for GP2 driver Christian Vietoris? I'll try to add them to my batch.
Basically I've got stuff asking him about racing in front of his home crowd and in GP2, his season so far and prospects for the future.
Ask him what the best thing about going home is?
Ooohhh very nice. Thank you very much young sir - a free Rolls Royce for your good self
:)
No probs. See, the thing is, we always hear that it's nice to be in front of the home fans, how they raced here as a kid etc, but I want to know what Christian loves about going home to Germany rather than just racing there...
I must say I was at the Nurburgring for the European GP a few years back and thought the local beer was excellent - Christian's answer might be slightly different though....
does the fact there are already so many german drivers in F1 make it difficult for him to attract sponsors and break though?
That's a good one. One wonders if the German angle is saturated. Similarly the Spanish...
Cheers Nick - you'll find a free ice cream truck on its way to you
:)
It's actually a very interesting talking point for the sport
It doesn't seem directly linked to that country's economy...
You can only personally support so many drivers... People must be a bit overwhelmed.
Indeed in Spain the majority of sponsors are interested in Alonso and him only.
I'm sure it's happened with British drivers a lot in the last 20 odd years
I think if there was a new British driver next season for example, they'd have a hard time building up support with 2 successful and established drivers already. Why would a sponsor want to know? I'm sure they'd get more for their money sponsoring a driver with a proper fan base.
It's a worry that the likes of Sam Bird and Oli Turvey could end up going the way of Ant Davidson or Mike Conway
Dont forget about Di Resta.
I think there is room for a third, especially with the 2 brits tied to the same team
on the other a guy like Sutil manages to sail through despite being one of many Germans
He has big sponsorship, i have no idea why!
I do hope he gets a decent seat. Paffett was quite good coming through the ranks, but got lost in the Merc DTM machine
Maybe but he'd have to be good! Lewis came in when there were already 2 established drivers but it worked for him because he's fast.
most of it seems to come from Medion
He must take there entire advertising budget.
Also doesnt he have capri-sonne too?
most odd
Yum yum :)
here are all of them Sutil sponsors
talking of Sutil - whom did he support in the Uruguay Germany game I wonder ...
Thats crazy!
Pretty comparable to other drivers I would have thought
well, he keeps his seat in competitive team while Senna or Chandhok coming from much bigger countries (both) or with much more famous name (Senna) have to alternate their seat with at least Yamamoto ...
To be honest, I don't think he's doing a bad job - if anything, I think Sutil has improved this season
I wouldnt have thought at his talent level, i guess he has a good marketing team
he has improved, but he isnt exactly being linked with ferrari
There will only ever be precious few that fit into that bracket at any one time though and Sutil not being in that group isn't necessarily a bad thing.
Looking at this season's peformances from the Scuderia, that's hardly a bad thing ;)
I did not mean to say he is doing bad job. What I meant was to point out that he is probably doing better job than others when it comes to personal sponsorship.
A champion for sure
;)
... look at his compatriots - Glock (ended up with Virgin (the team) ) or Heidfeld (a test driver that has nothing to test other than his own patience)
But you could argue that Glock was a victim of bad luck while Heidfeld was a victim of image...
yes, but they were both also victims of empty purses ... I recall Heidfeld himself saying something along those lines
That's hardly a new or unique problem for a racing driver though...
The german companies at least seem willing to sponsor drivers though, the brits dont seem to be so lucky
... and we are back to the part of the job that Sutil is doing better than some of the others :-)
the nasty malware script is gone, yay :-) only 8000+ items were infected ...
QED :D
ooooh Pamela on facebook:
Just got my photo taken with mark webber at nice airport! Pic to come...
I wonder which airport? :)
Omg! Just saw mark webber at nice airport. Got my photo taken with him. He was great. Fixed his hair before taking pic. Was with his partner, parents and brother.
ehm... Nice :-)
I broke your story, whoops!
You stole her thunder :)
That is awesome! Can't wait to see the picture.
I didn't know she'd pop in here! *waves to Pamela*
I had no idea he had a brother. The things you learn.
Joe discusses the expansion of Lotus and makes an interesting point about the new Indycar rules:
Question is, will Bernie let that happen?
does he have any way to stop that ? how can he stop McLaren for example from creating McLaren Indy Racing Team running in the same colours as their F1 team ?
Wow! Thats very cool!
Maybe advise him to check that the plane hasnt had its wings swapped before boarding :P
ha-ha, love that
:)
I can't imagine Bernie having rights to the liveries to be honest...
Would the IRL want to become F1b ?
were you not here for the live launch? steven pointed that possibility out at the time. fernandes confirmed via twitter he was interested.
Good point, but if there were some sort of US tie-in, the audience might not be as abrasive to the idea.
My Favourite F1 circuit now has its own Drag Racing team! :)
http://www.facebook.com/#!/album.php?aid=185960&id=355083163166&ref=mf
Just so you know, the Bahrain circuit also has a drag strip and a flat 1.25 mile oval...
Yes I was. I mentioned the article more for the quote underneath about the other F1 teams getting involved. It's no surprise Lotus wants to as they are already there...
Hockenheim also has drag strip - near the pitlane entry
Hello all. Looks like Heikki agrees with Sidepodcast.
Just got the latest (& new look) F1 Racing with a Q&A with Heikki:
Q: If F1 could introduce one new rule, what would it be?
A: Pit stops back!
The drag strip is nothing new,the NHRA Top Fuel team is though!
Calder Park or Eastern Creek's pit straight is a drag strip too I think...
believe it or not, I've always liked that chap.
He hasnt been making pit stops?
They are supposed to be mandatory! #cheat
comment left before I finished it...
Hockenheim also has drag strip - near the pitlane entry. and they do some pretty loud drag demos there during the GP weekends. that sound was something between F1 car and jet, more on the jet side ...
:)
of course he does. he loves us :)
*giggles at hat*
Actually he was checking in a large case that looked like it might fit a wing. Might carry his own these days? haha. He was really nice. I wished him good luck.
Could it have been for a mountain bike?
possibly... I think he might have been flying back to UK? Flying BA.
Hmmm... one wonders if Vettel owns a 4x4 with a dent on the side??
you weren't kidding when you said there were aussies everywhere :D
There's loads here too... and some really loud Aussie kids at the hotel we stayed at in Malmø ;)
Everywhere! I keep hearing the accent.
are you sure that's not just because you're travelling with your sister? ;)
haha, could be ;P
speaking of the front wings: http://chrislabrooy.com/f1.html
Those are beautiful!
wow!
Amy - pic up on FB :)
Can you twitpic or flickr it for us too?
woot! That's after he did his hair? :D
Don't know if anyone else saw this from Adam Cooper regarding yesterday's Brands' crash...
Yep!
Amy - Am about to board so are u able to pls post the pic in the comments ?
If that car wasn't such a silly blobby shape I wonder if it would have gone over the barrier? The thing bounced like a rugby ball!
Thanks!!!
Have a nice flight Pamela :)
can do! have a good flight :D

I was thinking that too...
Afternoon lovely people.
Danny Sullivan is the steward in Germany!! Ace!!
:)
Danny Sullivan? Did he even do F1?
He does. Cool pic!
1983. He did OK and then went back to the US suddenly
Tyrell?
"Spin and Win" Danny, right?
woops - that's better
He should bring an interesting point of view
Your comment was also "Spin and Win" worthy ;)
thanks - so much effort

I had his "Indy Heat" game on the Atari too ;9
They should make Andretti the guy for Monza
Now that would be nice

Epic sleep.
Mild hangover. :)
Been up an hour and just about waking up.. Today is the 'do nothing day' of my holiday :)
Those are the best days ;)
Love those. Yay for holidays!
Exactly. The first day of your holiday you should always reboot!
That is an epic sleep! Nice work.
Once after a flight home to NZ from Europe, we were so tired we slept for 16 hours!
Mmm, sleep.
Speqking of which......I'm to bed :-)
My thoughts exactly :)
It is great. The thing I am going to miss most when I eventually get a new job is waking up naturally when I've had enough sleep.
I did stay up late though, so it was 'only' 9 or 10 hours :)
Cereal and juice done, best have a shower and a cup of tea.
Nice, he's pretty well qualified though maybe not so much in F1. At least he won't have grudges..
Stunning
Ah, I see. I applaud anyone that can sleep past 11am though. No matter how tired I am or how late I go to bed, I don't think it's physically possible for me to sleep through midday.
If I sleep past 9am, I stay up all of the following evening :(

Interesting. Does "comments" have to be quoted like that though?
That's like saying, sure my readers have an "opinion".
Probably because he knows the "comments" won't be "reasonable" "opinions" ;)
Last week a BBC sub editor came up with one which I really liked... The story was about how the Anglican church had managed to stop a split in the church over bringing in Women bishops. The headline: "No sects please, we're bishops".
Sadly this has now become: "What does women bishops decision mean for the Church?"
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/10616553
That jarred me too... I'd imagine he was trying to reiterate his point that they weren't really comments on the story. But it comes across as though they aren't comments at all somehow.
I think on major sites they often aren't.. I mean his reference to the Obama comments for example. On a lot of sites the comments section is full of trolling rather than actual debate.
Good article.
i think people are coming to the conclusion that comments are becoming less and less useful in the online world.
the problem is few people take the time to properly moderate discussion, because it's expensive and doesn't generate much income. i guess the quotes mean, you may have an opinion, but i really care not for many/most of them.
In most cases, I agree...
or maybe most aren't comments, but rather endless, baseless criticism.
if i were autosport, i would've switched off their forum long ago.
someone facebooked a charlie brooker article this morning. i've lost it now, but he had some good points about comments too.
Just Autosport? Most have become full of warring factions and flame wars. No useful debate anymore.
Dave Gorman wrote a good one too on a similar note...
Yes. Forums are a whole other animal though.
i just think it would save them money and hassle that they don't need.
i think comments have surpassed them in some ways. youtube for example, the comments are far worse than anything ever said on a lot of forums.
Yikes - have you ever seen the ITV F1 forum page?!
:o
I don't bother. I reposted (as linking wasn't allowed) an article on a forum where I thought it would be appreciated. Instead it got ripped apart and called one-sided.
Even some of the comments I get are "You did it wrong". So we write these posts, which take ages to write and some people just tell you that it's wrong?
So much of this is about broken window theory: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broken_windows_theory
Comments work well here and on Joe's site and on smaller sites because people behave because they know that people are paying attention. Sometimes it gets out of hand but somebody will come along and sort things out.
When the comments grow faster than the rate of users you realise that moderation doesn't scale terribly well.
Interestingly I think one of the best attempts to fix this is the whole suite of StackExchange sites where they are trying not to fall into the problems of old usenet. What happens there is you earn reputation and you are allowed to do certain things like moderate only once the system learns to trust you. The idea being that then moderation can scale. It will be interesting to see if it works.
I meant to add a link to stackexchange: http://www.stackexchange.com/
Doesn't either Will Buxton or Adam Cooper use this on their site?
comments work better in a niche environment, so it has a better chance of working by slicing the 'stacks' like that.
comments on generic sites don't hold a huge amount of value to me, because they lack expert(ish) opinion. at least a comment on a site about web servers will at least only attract people with an interest in that subject.
I don't think so... You can't use it personally.
Exactly... Like the way that when we have threads for people to talk football it doesn't annoy people as much.
What I mean is one persons signal is another persons noise.
a niche within a niche is even better.
however, almost none of the football comments were comments about an article. so that's a whole different thing again. there the post simply served as a means of collecting comments on a specific subject. live commenting posts are really about the moment of the event, serving almost no purpose after the fact.
i'm not sure they even count as "comments"?
Indeed...
I mean look at this page... 8 thousand page views on a pretty niche subject which I was having problems with and couldn't find an answer to anywhere on the web:
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/30005/how-do-i-fire-an-event-when-a-iframe-has-finished-loading-in-jquery
The signal to noise rate on the answers to my question is astonishingly high (as in all of the answers were worth reading). The correct answer can bubble to the top as people vote the answers up and then the asker marks one question as correct.
If the situation changes people can edit the question to reflect the situation.
Can anyone take over my daily duty for tomorrow? I am switching internet service provider so I won't have internet access for much longer. :(
#notherethoughiwanttobe
if you read a live thread back, i bet a good percentage make no sense without the live stream being shown in sync. maybe they need a different type of categorisation.
i think there's probably three types of comment on sidepodcast:
1) live discussion of an ongoing event (race, match or live show)
2) responses to an article (feedback, corrections and opinion)
3) new discussions created out of nowhere (daily)
only point two affects newspapers, and that really only adds to the conversation if you have semi-knowlegable people responding. that's where niche content can be improved by comments.
points one and three require no real knowledge of experience about anything. so any (moderated) discussion is good. thoughts?
Absolutely... And it's also where the solution to a lot of that kind of stuff has been happening off site using things like twitter. People that I follow comment on stuff and draw my attention to stuff. If I agree then I retweet them or comment as well. If I don't then I unfollow or ignore them.
No problem, Marilene. Hope the switch goes okay!
I hope so too. I am switching mainly for the sports channel since cable television, mobile and internet comes as a package.
it's interesting that the title of that thread really is the key in finding your information though.
on last thought on titles. if you scan our contents page looking for a post: http://sidepodcast.com/contents/
the straight to the point titles are significantly more helpful. say:
First 2010 Driver Change - Yamamoto in for Senna
whereas, this title tells you very little:
Double Trouble
but is much more fun in the context of the article contents.
We have this argument regularly.
we do. although not in the comments oddly... and you always win :)
I could do it if you like.
I most certainly do not. We normally compromise and end up with "Montezemolo - F1 Race No Place for GP2 Pace"
Gah. :)
Yay! Perfect.
Indeed. They force you to ask the question in the title and will change it if necessary. The other interesting thing that they do is whereas on old sites they will get angry with you for writing duplicate questions here it doesn't matter so much. When people mark your question as a duplicate they realise you may have just written the ideal search title for google so your question is used as an alias to the existing question.
that is genius. tells you exactly what's in the article and it's memorable.
:)
Hmmm.
It's not quite as genius as: I Think It's Fly When Joe Stops by for the Summer
okay, that is genius.
i wonder if we should introduce titles into the daily post? it would be a complete break from the standard, and make peoples life more tricky, but i'd be interested to see what people came up with every day.
(says the man who doesn't have to do it)
Slow, no go, in F1 Show?
Don't you start.
Ferrari - Black Marks for Backmarkers?
that's good, but you've lost the GP2 keyword. that'll cost you at least two page views.
ooops ;)
i like that. ferrari must rank higher than montezemelo in searches. no f1 though.
Where does hokey cokey rank on Google, please?
Hokey Cokey Hispania Pull Chandhok Out, Put Yamamoto In
Oooohh I like that
:)
Could be F1 Backmarkers if need be
hockey cokey is the "memorable". hispania, chandock and yamamoto tell you what's in the post and helps you find it.
I thought we were against people using titles for searches and Google ranks?
:)
i'm less interested in google, more this page: http://sidepodcast.com/contents/
Ah righto
I KNEW IT!!! Kovalinen was behind it all along. I bet he would have got away with it if hadn't been for you pesky kids!
It all makes sense since his nearest rival in the new teams championship is indeed...Chandhok.
I must admit it is quite fun crafting the titles. Before it was just pluck a random song lyric that might fit. Now it is - these are the words we want in it, how can we make it clever.
The high fives at the end are fun too.
although the google thing was the start of the conversation. internally christine says we shouldn't put any keywords in titles, because that sucks. and she's right.
however, more and more i'm finding it bloomin' hard to find anything in the archives. therefore am trying to aid discovery.
:)
:)
i think you won with this one: http://sidepodcast.com/2010/07/11/all-we-hear-is-radio-ga-ga/
It says radio. Wooo.
I didn't say no keywords, I said the keywords shouldn't be the be all and end all. You have turned down many a fine title of mine because of no silly keywords. Now that we compromise (and high five), it's better.
whereas this is the very definition of poor headline writing: http://sidepodcast.com/2010/07/11/post-race-debate-did-the-circuit-changes-at-silverstone-improve-the-racing/
So.. keywords, if they fit?
:)
i can't believe no-one thinks daily headlines are a good idea...
We're all just ignoring you and hoping you'll forget you ever suggested it.
keywords in an entertaining manner, is the holy grail i guess. random isn't helpful. a list of endless keywords is sucky.
i see it as a challenge. we could comment on the headline and help people write better ones?
Headlines for humans not for Google.
What would be today's?
agreed. my favourite ever btw: http://sidepodcast.com/2009/09/26/will-i-am-wheelman/
I struggle to think of a headline for specialised things never mind for a daily post...
- 200 days of summer
- five men going all guns for their country
erm...
Hahahaha.
Golf Gone Guaranteed
:)
We question Schumacher's character
Pedro challenges Schumacher's character
awesome!
Great title... for the voting post :)
It'll send discussion of it into the Daily..
But is that really going to help you find anything in the post once it is archived?
I can see the fun in comng up with titles for the daily bu I can't see it serves any real purpose
Good point and something that is going to happen all the time as dailys always highlight other posts
the daily thing was more of a challenge for people to play with writing titles and give us something else to discover in the comments.
my issue with finding things, is archived posts that i know exist but could be called anything under the sun.
Talking of daily titles m'learned colleague Mr Fourstar has to solicit / cojole some of our collegues into doing certain things for him every day... So he sends out e-mails with a subject line like these:
Tubular Tuesday
Magical Monday
Feral Friday
ThrowingItDown Thursday
He hasn't repeated himself once, he claims, in five years.
Also every week he has to remind people to do something for a product called the Company Events Preview these too get e-mail subjects like: Colourful Estonian Pancakes and Cruelly Eliminated Portugal. Again no repeats in 5 years.
♥
like it took me about 20 minutes to find this post about wurz last week: http://sidepodcast.com/2007/06/11/the-man-is-a-legend/
would it have been so hard for me to title it "wurz is a legend"? really?
his talent is wasted.
The problem with the daily is it is so wide ranging that it is impossible to use something like tags to help search. You caould almost do with a summary of the topics discussed and set up a summary search. I am sure it would be utterly impossible though
Was it in the Wurz category or was it tagged Wurz?
Highfive? ;)
nope and nope. tag fail, category fail. massive organisational and title fail. i may as well have not written it, if i knew it existed but had no way of finding it.
I am getting a horrible premonition of a huge admin job coming my way.
*eek*
You can join me, I've made plans sort out the tags and categories on my blog.... eventually.
i found it by the way, by googling which race wurz had a wing failure. finding out the date of that event and then finding posts close to that event in the list.
Just this weekend he said: "You must miss sorting out the wiki now that's done."
milky bar?
Can we all bug F1Racing to get an online version of their mag;
sorry, no immediate plans to do this I'm afraid
Just isn't good enough!
you looked bored. or was it relieved?
Out of interest... Why were you looking for it?
because pedro's wing failed in silverstone and i wanted to point out that wurz safely carried on with half a wing and that sauber weren't necessarily negligent by sending him out again with it in pieces.
Afternoon everybody.
I've spent my day being called "Miss" or "Mrs Waldock" because the kids in my class have never had a male teacher before and so they don't understand why they'd not call me Miss.
gr
At least you knew what the first thing to teach them was.
Can I be excused from not calling you Miss Miss?
just don't buy it. problem solved.
And you are telling us that because no-one hear would dream of calling you Miss Waldock?
oh i stopped my subscription a while ago :)
I loved RG's suggestion. Miss Warlock
I tried.
All
Day.
gah.
7 year olds are rubbish
i blame their teacher
me too ;)
I hope it says that somewhere on your cv.
hmm, not so much. i'll definitely add it, direct quote;
"7 year olds are rubbish, and should learn genders"
Perfect.
I am sure you can spend all day tomorrow teaching them the same thing again
alonso has had x2 two awful races. some of his worst finishes ever. today he climbs into the castrol top 10.
I think you are the only person who reads those rankings.
I'm pretty sure that we actually are spending all day tomorrow doing exactly the same thing over again.
It's amazing how amazed some kids are just to have a male adult in their school. Male primary teachers are very rare, boo.
i think they chase me. i can't get them out of my feed.
They must have felt sorry for him as he went out of our cup so early.
http://twitter.com/karunchandhok/status/18843735048
Who though putting men in American football uniforms was a good idea?
i'm stunned franck isn't leading for not racing at the weekend.
I don't know if anyone has seen this, but a small bit of news has dropped from Lotus - Fairuz Fauzy is getting a further first practice this year as he will be stepping in at Hockenheim as well.
Good for him.
I wonder when it changed. When I was a primary school there were several male teachers & both my primary schools had male head teachers. Mind you, that was in the dark ages (or the 1970s, if you prefer)
then by their logic, shouldnt you be running away with it for never having raced?
because his results are better than last year. although I remember nothing of 2009, ask me about 2008 and I could tell you.
:)
None in the school im in at the moment, and none at the last school I went to. I had one when i went to primary school. I think the problem is that male teachers are rare anyway, and so can pick and choose any job that they want and as long as they are of a good standard will get it, because male teachers are so saught after
There was one male teacher at my primary school and he only arrived the last year I was there. There was a male headteacher before that but he didn't teach and effectively was a manager and you rarely saw him.
My sister's bf Dave said the same when he was in London, although I don't they called him miss. The beard probably helped?
Am quite sure that there or other visable defining features between men and women other than a beard.
And in some cases thats not even the case!
Mine had a male headteacher in the 80s
It is skewed a bit because the races are in different weeks. I can't quite get my head around why he moved higher when they removed a 14th position from this week a year ago...
This logo thing is getting silly
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/85378
i just like how they are saying Petrov is better than Buemi based on the fact Petrov is three places higher: http://www.castroldriverrankings.com/news/2010/07/buemi-key-to-driver-market
Twitter is broken again
They were very funny at silverstone
http://twitpic.com/23u7ig
All in a huge line, 2 or 3 deep in a car park.
Did the people he passed in the rankings have an even worse result vs last year.
It is ridiculous. Team have had logos in their garage and on their trucks forever. I guess Bernie and co don't understand custom and practise
He has the same number of points last week as he does this week, the points of those around him have actually gone down.
CHandhok saw them at the weekend and it not a fan
They have an odd idea of safety in the Isle of Man. Still it looks fun
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bf3cJRkeEqE
that needs to be televised!
I can't imagine driving a kart on a public road. Your back would be traashed in minutes. Those karts they are driving are probably good for 150mph. On a public road with no suspension??
does the seat not have any travel? otherwise that'll be a big bruise in the morning.
You'd wear a rib protector, but no, its a giant kart, with downforce too. Superkarts are scary, cant imagine doing that on roads with no run off
You will never get seat travel or padding on any track racing vehicle because that would massively interfere with the feedback the driver gets. Your body can't tell seat movement from chassis movement.
No run offs and kerbs about the same height as the wheels.
you hit one of those kerbs and you're screwed.
What's the pedal in the middle, anyway?
I'd love a go at a proper circuit, but theres no way you'd get me on a street circuit and definitely not in the wet
Listening to TNT and just heard Steve Jobs announce that Apple are giving iphone 4 owners free cases to sort the antenna problem. He sounds really happy about it. It's about 5 minutes in.
http://www.twit.tv/tnt33
It's the brake. These karts have gearboxes. You can hear gear changes on the sound track.
I would like to try one on a proper circuit but I would be scared I liked it
haha yeah
I may get to try a 10 hp one at an outside ina few weeks, but I think the shifter karts have a heck of a lot more hp than that.
Utterly insane! I had no idea they did that
If you ever get the chance try a 100cc 2 stroke. Those things accelerate at an incredible rate and are so much fun to drive
The Isle of Man and Ireland are quite happy to close public roads for racing/rallying regularly
Now I'm definitely moving :D
I'll be on the lookout.
Come to think of it, maybe I should get a rib protector, too. Those seats KILL my sides
me too!! even rubbishy rental karts bruise me so much
Mr Vatanen on IOM public roads
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-R7ws741KpE&feature=related
My sides are normally OK but my spine gets a huge bruise every time
Every once in awhile they configure the track with a long sweeping turn, and those kill my neck. Luckily they don't do that very often.
Hello there!
Google Wave is like the Matrix but without the sinister "humans into batteries" annoyance. Black magic, I tells ya
How is everyone?
I have never had a neck problem in a kart but I have probably never driven one for a long enough stint to do that on a suitable track. I twice did 100 laps in an FFord in a day and couldn't move anything above my waste the following day
Lunatic! How close was that to the wall, millimetres??
Evening.
It seems to have been an interesting day. Miss Waldock is moving to the Isle of Man and Mr C wants titles for daily posts to help search
bah, he still had some room!
Not lunatic. Genius
Hmm, ok then
When did Jon become post-op?
Weird isn't it..
Relaxed :)
I've done next to nothing all day.
Cleaned the bathroom, bit of a walk through town while I changed my PINs to something more memorable, booked in car repair for Weds/Thurs.
Watching Tour de France highlights now, I'm a few days behind.
hmmm
Has Judith checked in today?
oi! since 7 year olds who have never had a male teacher dont understand teh difference between miss and mr
It seems a class full of 7 yeard olds think he is a woman
So is it Miss Warlock at school then?
I think I was his shift change.
It's not that they think Im a woman, it's that they dont understand that im a man
:D :D :D :D
unfortunately yes
Perhaps you could wear a big hat and convince them to call you Señor Waldock? :P
You want to eat more spinach
Has foustar been calling him Judith all day?
I don't know. He disappeared just as I arrived
Or you could tell them you're like Mr Burns?
I am still here.
Old, mean and evil?
Although...I did take away some people's chairs today
Tough school
If you can't sit on your chair properly, you can't have one at all
Was it because someone said "please take a seat" ? :P
He said it very sheepishly at the beginning of the day... But since then we have mainly been referring to each other as, "erm", and "have you".
It's only yourself you're cheating.
;)
They have been at school for two years and haven't been taught how to sit on a chair?
Kids who lean on their chairs annoy me. So i stole their chairs.
tough love.
It worked though
You're holding the whole class back arguing like that.
Hi Judith ;)
Hello Bassano :)
Have you decided on what time you are bailing on your brother's wedding for that... Other thing?
Or are you joining us in the comments?
Wait, wasnt Jon At Merc GP?
Am i confused? i must be!
You'll go far, I like your style
I was, turns out kids are more fun.
Merc was just w/e, this is for my degree
So I am not the only one who didn't know Merc GP has a kindergarten. I assume it is a class of karters for their youth program
Aha,
Are you going to be an F1 teacher?
Yeah, today we did about oversteer, tomorrows understeer and Wednesday is a half day session on the correct use of 'for sure'
Nick, is there anyone you haven't asked for a paddock pass yet? ;)
Perseverance will be rewarded eventually
Maybe i should write to bernie?
:D Awesome!
You know, he might just approve of such a ballsy move
We all know Maxx made a mess of F1 but he also managed to screw up the World Rally Championship. The Monte Carlo rally like the Monaco GP has always been the jewel in the crown and has decided to turn down an invitation from the WRC to stay in the rival IRC. Great job Max.
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/85380
and then write to Mike Gascoyne 3 times.
:d hehehe
I was just about to post that same comment
It's gotta be worth a shot
worst they could do is say no.
Ok, back to work
Later folks
indeed
ill get on it, could be a good weekend project :)
I want to see the email! would be epic
Email bernie?
This is going snail mail with the biggest uae stamps i can find!
haha plan
Buy a domain that sounds like you have loads of money and e-mail from that. international-construction.com o something.
Universal Exports
I did think of that and it was going to be my first suggestion but even Bernie must have seen a Bond film
Did you guys see this pic from karuns mum?
http://twitpic.com/26ufio
First time I have seen it. I wonder what he is reading about
Possibly about a hot young talent called Yamamoto? :P
his mum?
jon, you need to talk to seven year olds + nick about gender: http://twitter.com/karunchandhok/status/18458891641
:D
Nicholas where are you???
evenings peoples of sidepodland
hey lukeh
Hellooooo :)
Maybe Steven's right and Nick has run away :P
Hellos yoo!
Told you.
Nokia are apparently buying Motorola! (via Natali Del Conte)
He probably saw me call him Nicholas and presumed he was in trouble... Nicky come back!
Only their network business
Probably thought you wanted ducks again
Always :D
hopefully talking to joe later. not sure any wiki questions were covered last time out, but will try today if you have any: http://sidepodcast.wikia.com/wiki/Questions_for_Joe
woohoo!!
montoya:
Manuela was born an hour ago. Mother and baby doing great!!!
http://twitter.com/jpmontoya/status/18928286240
Hehehe
congrats Mr Montoya :)
hopefully Manuela's first word in a few years won't be one of Montoya's more... ahem, feisty words from his vocabulary,
I wish Juan pablo was still in F1. He'd get a vote in the character cup from me anyways.
Double woohoo
The things people will do to get rankings points
:)
#same
We had a great discussion at the pub last year about this ;)
But yeah, Character cup For Sure!
what was title of the conversation? did it have keywords? ;)
I don't know, but it had lots of beer, fish and chips, Alex's trousers and hugs...
Eeeeehehehe.
oops!
never seen a guy spell it with a k though
he's quite famous isn't he, he went up against ari for the fia presidency job... i think?
So, while Mr C prepares to talk to Joe, I have cleaned a fridge, a kitchen, a bathroom, tested out a washing machine and half built a wardrobe.
I think he might have missed the memo about moving.
I left a couple of questions on the wiki for Joe
He is head of the Indian ASN
we only care about Joe, we don't care about your moving. Do that on your own time!
;)
:D
You went up against a washing machine alone after the last encounter?
Did the title have keywords?
yeah... but... i'm doing other stuff too. awesome factbyte factbox things. and stuff...
:D
:) :)
Oh, rats, no, it was a Backstreet Boys lyric. That's where I went wrong.
This time I WON.
I am blogging about Dr Who and it makes me realise how empty saturday evenings are now :(
Stupid awesome show.
hehehehe!
:D
1:1 now. I assume the decider takes place when you move
But there is an hour of Barrowman. I thought you were a fan
AT-AT Day Afternoon: http://epicwinftw.com/2010/07/07/awesome-video-it-was-a-busy-day/
we're moving?!?
I like Barrowman when he's on good shows
:D
It is plumbed in, and it works without leaking. I don't know how else it could get me. Of course, now I have said that...
I love that video. My mates thought I was odd :)
ta
It makes something horrible quite cute!
Hehe :)
I hate washing machines. I had to do a short presentation about something I hate on a course recently and I chose my washing machine!
So, whilst we're waiting for the next round of the character cup, does anyone have anything they would like considered for the rankings this week?
It's been quite quiet this week, I reckon.
I don't remember seeing very much of anything.. but my memory is awful
I think everyone sort of hibernates after Silverstone.
take points off everyone for being boring? :P
Heheh. The things I do have so far are negative points. It might be a bit of a downer this week!
- bruno's been promoted to karting today
- heikki's wishing upon a star
- timo went to a bike thing
Monto.. ah, nevermind.
Karun has been helping young Indian drivers
http://twitter.com/karunchandhok/status/18767183418
Not much else comes to mind other than ANt being on twitter but someone needs to give him a drive before that matters
:)
its called MotoGP ;)
heikki also went to walk the golf...
he did ALOT of karting today
yeah, that bike thing.
Heikki went to the golf
Treble points for that.
webber met pamela
:)
OH YES!
Did Webber go to one earlier in the year?
I think Tim should get points for beating Alonso ;)
Heikki and Catherine have been watching satellites
http://twitter.com/KataHyde/status/18924935929
renault drivers have been signing everything in russia and doing donuts for fans
When? I missed that
He goes often
Oh and so did Jenson
i don't know what this is, but it must be points worthy: http://twitter.com/realTimoGlock/status/18546587434
If Mr C is now the best at remembering things then god help us all :P
compiling my game results is boring, I need to make it more entertaining than Excel sheets
Timo has an awesome background
Not as awesome as Mr C's one though.
:D
:)

lewis picked up the bandini: http://twitpic.com/26j3n6
Woah. Those are actual clothes. Not a racesuit. Weird.
buemi should lose points fro saying he doesn't have a contract for next year and then deciding he does afater all
I got that one :)
I haven't even seen that mentioned anywhere. Did he drive his race car on the road there. Someone who won that recently drove an F1 car to the award ceremony
Kubica wasn't it?
I know Vettel did.
evening
think so.
I kinda thought it was him but I am not at all sure
Maybe more than one has done it. Maybe they all do it
Kubica definitely did because we all thought he was insane.
Hi Lou.
I have a picture I am not sure I should show you. Without me telling you anything about i do you want to see it?
that one made sense, because he was driver for STR. kubica's didn't cause he was driving for BMW. both started from the STR factory. odd.
Heikki Kovalainen drove Gareth Jones (on Speed) up Goodwood Hill: http://www.garethjones.tv/onspeed/onspeedvideo012.html
It may not be new, but the videos just got released...
I want to!
what has Jenson done?...
What is this about? Isn't he missing the word stop?
http://twitter.com/luizrazia/status/18767050591
Nothing to do with Jenson. There was someone who was on one of Leo's shows who mentioned that among other things she was a photographer. I had a look at he twitter page and when I saw the picture on the bottom left my first thought was your reaction to it.
http://twitter.com/mostlylisa

he was driving the MP4-23 in Moscow: http://img838.imageshack.us/img838/8489/moscow.jpg
:O :O :O :O :O :O :O :O :O :O :O :O :O :O :O :O :O :O !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
#lenenvy
woah.
hehe! yes, in that silly silly new helmet design.
Why can everyone else access Twitter.com but it always comes up with an error for me? Has all day :(
Weird! Have you tried daft things like emptying your cookies?
he must feel weird sitting in a car that once lapped him. #sorryLou
That was a bit calmer than I expected
I haven't tried anything because I assumed Twitter was being useless again :)
I haven't used it much today but haven't had a single problem
that worked..
ah yes... gotta love the honda years ;)
i still think Goodwood must have been weird for him too.. seeing Rosberg drive his car (well technically Rubens' chassis...).
hehe! one day i'll have a lens like that...
LALALALALALA
i refuse to get into this debate with you again ;)
She just launched a photography app and sold £250,000 worth in the first week or maybe the first month. Either way she can afford any lens she likes
that poor chassis :(
surely the people who made will be wanting that money?
I think it is entirely her app. I wasn't really paying attention though but she sounded very happy like she was getting the bulk of the money
doctor who ping!!
http://wibblywobbly.wordpress.com/2010/07/19/who-is-your-who/
]
nice one!
woah!!!
I don't think she coded it, I think the tap-tap guys did that part.
She metioned tap-tap. I really wish I had been paying attention now and I would know what I was talking about
Ping: http://sidepodcast.com/2010/07/19/character-cup-2010-round-1-lewis-hamilton-vs-nico-rosberg/
Tv catchup isn't working right on my iPhone.
Hi guys btw, long time no comment!
Lewis Hamilton is on my spotify, wierd
when she talks, I listen. She's frickin' hot ;)
This is the website about the app
http://campl.us/
Hi TM
I'm having a horrible day. It's just going from bad to worse. I'm not sure how to snap out of it.
Tea.
Ducks
I don't have any :( I could go and buy some but the co-op over the road is shut and I can't be bothered driving somewhere.
They're banned :(
Duck Hunt!!!
Awwww, no fun!!!
*pops up out of grass*
How can ducks be banned?
Ahh no
I see this family of ducks. A mummy and 5 babies as I drive to/from work quite often. They're silly. I've seen them trying to cross the dual carriageway before and they still live stupidly close to the road. Nick told me not to look out for them anymore so I won't be sad if they're gone
chocolate?... Pimms?... erm...
But then you are going to be sad earlier. If you see them it would make you happier
Let's see how well I can mess this one up.
Ping: http://sidepodcast.com/2010/07/19/renault-drivers-become-midfield-players-in-christines-rankings/
If you're that dog I'm going to smegging shoot you. I took great pride in shooting that pest, even more shooting the ducks in one foul swoop.
G'Night guys :)
bye
Oh - before I go, can I possibly swap dailys with someone later in the week because I'm out the next couple of nights...
Night Mr Gavin
Night Gavin
Maybe Marilene can do it if she's back? I'll be around during the day, just not the evening. Good night!
I find it strange that whenever i read 'Renault' i think of Fernando Alonso. I think i'm still living in 2006
Say your credit card has a limit of £100 and you want to buy something that costs £120 using the card, are you allowed to pay £20 in advance to the card and then spend the £120 or is that called money laundering?
or 2009. ;)
oh yes. probably 2009..
although saying that i actually dislike 2009, soo 2008 for me :P
That's not money laundering unless you plan to give the credit card company a dodgy twenty
It's not money laundering but I don't think the credit card would register that it has extra credit. You may be better off trying to increase your limit, if only temporarily.
i liked 2009.. for obvious reasons.
Temporarily increasing the limit is the way to go
hehe of course. its just a shame Honda never provided a better car before.
Yes I suppose it is. I was trying to avoid phoning them up. They always harass me about buying things I don't want....
The alternative is to steal Nick's credit card destails
This is a good point. I think that probably is closer to a crime than what I was originally intending though :P
Depends how you do it. Does he remember what he does when he is drunk? He may have bought you something when he was less than sober and hav forgotten it
I overpaid a card by £5 when I cleared it off. It still has that as a balance, I've not tried to spend on it so doing it that way may be fine. But paying £20 on a zero balance might look fishy.
Those aren't the actual amounts. I'm guessing it looks even more fishy when we're talking about £100s of pounds... I'll ring them up in the morning :( I haven't got the strength right now :P
need the patience of a saint.
Plane tickets I presume
Yah :D
So it's worth putting up with the hassle then
Nick said he'd help me out with them so maybe I should get him to pay on the grounds that it's less hassle :D
Seems fair. And you can send him the dodgy £20 note.
I only mentioned the money laundering thing because I think I've overpaid before by accident and they got very annoyed about it. I'm sure it was fraud related. It seems easier than anything else though :(
I don't think it's fraud, I think it's because if you overpay they don't make money. They want you to borrow as much as possible from them so that they can maximise their chances of charging you interest.
It does depend, of course, by how much you overpay. If, for example, you paid £3000 in cash and then got a nice clean cheque from them, there would be a money laundering aspect to it.
They shouldn't get annoyed, it's basically free money to them.
You have an excellent point there, but money laundering is a red herring.
wooohooo! ♥ joe. managed to get a bunch of wiki questions in this week too.
That seems very quick. Sidepodtime is confusing
yay for Joe!! :)
erm. 50mins of recording. slightly shorter show just for amy.
It was a short time then. Booo Amy
skype was better on joe's new mac, i'd say 99% of that is content, only one dropped call to fix.
That sounds like a huge improvement
Skype works worse on macs? :(
skype is hopeless on a mac. it only works well on windows.
Hmmm... that's lame. I guess I am banned from owning a mac then.
i blame gerard lopez ;)
I know this sounds defensive, but I've never had a problem with it :)
Have you tried iChat with GarageBand recording, then have the other person send you the file they recorded as well for merging?
I was just wondering whether it's general #skypefail because I use it a lot and it is pretty universally hopeless.... I get a lot of dropped calls, a lot of calls with poor quality for no reason, a lot of general crashing.
i have the same issues. although it's better on windows for me. they just spend more time on that version.
it's nothing that isn't fixable. today was just much better then previously.
this confuses me, i have only ever had one problem with skype and i think that was due to the persons mobile singla more than anything
By all means, stick with what you know and what works.
I'm just curious about the iChat thing because I read about it ages ago but don't know anyone who has tried it
I agree, works just fine for me too.
it would be marginally better quality, but the file size would be large.
Hmmm it drives me mad. I'd say it can get so bad you might as well forget talking with it at least once a fortnight.
What about other services like MSN, Yahoo etc.?
I've never really tried them. I guess I'd be reluctant to bother without a strong personal recommendation from someone who is a regular user.
I like skype because it's cheap and I can use it to make calls on my mobile on the cheap. Minus points would be when it goes mental and drops the calls before it can even ring.
I think just blaming Nick for everything sounds like a good idea :)
Must dash - work must be attended :(
I think you've got the right idea :)
Have fun at work.
is it mean to dislike the photo by Darren Heath because it's not quite straight, and no matter what kinda 'story' he tells about why he took the photo i can't get over the fact it isn't particularly interesting..and could have been shot at a much better angle.... i feel like he should know better than that...
however i like the insight he gives about going for a walk with a notebook and standard lens... tis the kind of info we don't get very often.
*makes note for future*
morning all
ooh and i forgot the link...
http://www.facebook.com/yasmarinacircuit?v=app_7146470109&ref=ts
link?
lou, i felt exactly the same.
a) i could've taken a better one
b) i learnt a lot anyhow.
i guess yas pay him less than the beeb?
Not mean at all. I seem to remember Mr C having an argument with him about the thirds rule being explained on a phot that had been cropped or something.
You think what you think and you feel what you feel
Hi Amy and Alistair
i did. he was wrong. i meant to blog that.
He was wrong. I remember the whole discussion and I don't remember anyone other than him arguing with you
i still have his email. remind me during the three-week break and i'll do that.
it looks like he just saw it, and snapped it... no thinking involved... i want to see more thought out shots of the old silverstone track.. or something.. not a simple shot of some rust taken at eye level.. i looked at it for a good few minutes looking for something he obviously saw in it. i found nothing.
I think it's that kinda information i've been looking for... i mean we have a bit of an idea how the drivers go about their weekend, but not a clue about photogs.
Yes i do get the feeling he gets paid less by Yas..
Then again i'm not sure i totally understand him, he has a photo of the red bull diffuser on his site... which he has pixalated so we can't see it. i asked him about it and he said that it's there just in case papers want it and then they can contact him to buy it. So er... why not approach the papers and journalists with it? rather than putting a silly pixalated pic on your website. Then again maybe i don't understand business..
same, interesting read, but average photo
Haven't you written software to remind you of stuff? I will forget just like I forgot to remind you about the writing comp for Joe which has been an idea for about a year now
ooooh! balls.
i meant to ask your opinion, cause i did the same i figured i'd missed something.
isn't that what his watermark is for?
Normally his site is more a blog with a few pics. I never considered that he was selling pics from it
you would assume the picture shows something important, otherwise you could tell what it is without needing to buy it
well you woulda thought so...
here was the tweet he sent me - https://twitter.com/F1Photographer/status/17355085045
my argument is... why don't you go to them rather than waiting for them to come to you...
maybe he's too famous for that?..
Not having seen the discussion, I don't necessarily have a problem with this, I regularly crop pictures after the event.
In other news, I played with a Nikon D700 the other day, big mistake.
yeah. you're missing quite an important bit of the story :)
i'll blog it one day.
erm... i can't even find the picture.
it's after Webber's crash in valencia i think. i'll try find it.
He was explaining the rule of thirds but the photo had been cropped from the original so the points he picked out on the copy were not on the lines. It was ridiculous
Fair enough, didn't want to go down the route of "well I didn't see the programme myself, but..."
When you blog it put keywords in the title
Ah, that makes sense. I agree with Mr C :)
:) :) :) :) :) :)
and when challenged the justification was complete nonsense. and the request for pictorial clarification ignored. although you could probably tell is was a mentalist by that point.
That photo is mediocre at best, although the background is interesting. I'm just not sure I'd illustrate such an interesting article with it.
well that's interesting.. no pic of the blow diffuser. now i want to know what happened to it, whether it was bought by a mag but not used or if Red Bull saw it?.. or if it was just a rubbish pic...
hardcover book sales fall behind digital versions: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/07/20/technology/20kindle.html
I still don't understand why he'd blur it.
me neither. but there you go. whatever he does obviously works for him, he must earn a living somehow :)
Hello again
The future, as predicted by Christine & Mr C :)
Hello
woah... Darren Heath in 2003 is a scary thing...
http://www.sutton-images.com/preview.asp?filename=d03ger1015.jpg
hii
Is it still weird evening & is Miss Warlock still around?
evening folks
She is yes.
Hi Leigh
We appear to be the new shift coming on :)
I have a question for your new colleagues if you feel it is appropriate...
I'm writing the Daily, just heads-up warning - there is a Spa mention in order to direct people to the wiki for the people who missed the convo 24hrs ago. Hope that's ok. Don't want to go around in circles again if someone who wasn't there brings things up again. :)
Also it may be two or three mins late as I might have mistimed it.
oh??
my stay can't be overlong i'm afraid
I am now scared. But shoot.
hehe. did you see my eureka moment? did it make any sense?
It's harm;ess enough really.
So, last year, I dabbled in the internet dating site MySingleFriend to mixed results
This year, I am trying eHarmony...
Pat,
have you been watching the spat between Tomas Scheckter and Alex Tagliani on twitter? It's quite funny... and now Paul Tracy has joined in too
IndyCar:
Bernard: Duno's speeds to be assessed
http://www.racer.com/bernard-dunos-speeds-to-be-assessed/article/174860/?DCMP=EMC-RACER_DAILY
I have noticed that the vast majority of profiles I see are either in the finance sector or teaching.
Thought you could ask around and see why that is?
That site in particular, I mean
Just a thought :)
Late dailys are all the rage these days.
I am not utterly utterly confused. I take it that "for your new colleagues" you don't mean the 7 year olds
i am sat here thinking the same...
No, they are your students :)
Other teachers, I mean
hehehehe - http://twitpic.com/26tbd3 - i like this :)
I did but was too bleary eyed and slightly drunk to make a coherent reply at the time :)
Makes sense to me. I guess we're in the mindset that we're the ones going... Tbh I assume every conversation here is inclusive and people can pitch in, but you're very right in that we phrased it wrongly and we'll do better.
These South Parkesque avatars are splendid
right, bed time for me. night all!! xx
Night Lou
kind of like when a few of us went to a party, but we invited the whole of the internet along too.
by lou
:D
most of them are around 50+ and the vast majority are married, so im quite sure they're the type of people who don't go on that site..
Ciao.
epic.evening.
Night Lou
Hmm, ok
Maybe they will have an insight into why their younger colleagues go there [maybe not]
spa could and should be that epic. roaming will make it difficult to do that from the track. but before and after can be equally epic.
I'm confused. Do you mean that specific site? Or online in general?
I was wondering about contacting the site via text, is this still problematic?
The lack of two-way comms is still frustrating
That site
we need to find a central location with green screen facilities and impose f1 on the background and broadcast 'live from spa'
:)
Like an episode of The Daily Show. An F1 Special :)
will bump it up the list.
On that topic, I have no idea... Maybe there's loads on other sites too. I know a lot of teachers who've met people online. But I also know a lot of teachers so....
You want to do a sidepodcast version of Capricorn One?
yeah!
I only have one place to compare it to but eH seems to be full of those two sectors
Trackside has just started - should be a full show
:)
maybe it's just best type of site for that
I saw something last night after the race, can't say I've looked today
But why, is my thought
Love that film
For old series Dr Who fans
http://gallifreynewsbase.blogspot.com/2010/07/frazer-hines-reveals-cancer-battle.html
:(
I was thinking about it this afternoon and I identified something else along similar lines, it is the last but one in the Daily, which may or may not have just posted.
There still at it.....
night
I'm going to spend so much money on that
I managed to get all of my Cape Town charges refunded :)
I saw it a couple of times years ago but I can't remember if I liked it or not
Yeah they were morons!
I'm going to try it again in August. They flat-out said they can't stop my roaming data despite promising to do so when the pre-arranged limit was reached
First time I saw it [in the 80's I think] it was great
Don't know how well it has aged
