So, the summer break is here. Despite Hungary's reputation for being a dull race, we had quite an exciting one! Vettel proved that he could actually pull off a decent overtake; Heidfeld lost most of his exhaust before his engine blew up; Hamilton actually made a decent apology; Button defied the usual jinx that accompanies significan races to win his 200th Grand Prix. I don't think too many people would compare today to a race in Bahrain!

Well, Hulki might, because he's itching to be behind the wheel again.

Hulkenberg says that if he cannot race in F1 next year, he would not want to remain a test driver and would look to a different series.

Have you ever wondered why there are so many systems in the world that don't work? Herewith This Is Broken.

Now for the physics geeks among you, an addictive vampire game. Don't worry, it has nothing to do with the likes of Edward Cullen.

Still on non-Edward Cullen related things, we have a rocky stalker who lives in a permanent twilight zone.

I don't know how many of you care, know about, or are following the unfolding search for the Higgs boson particle, but there's some exciting news. The researchers are being quite cautious about announcing it, but both the LHC at Cern and the Tevatron particle accelerator near Chicago have had similar results to suggest its existence.

As it turns out, our chemistry teachers may have been too closed-minded about the definition of hydrogen bonds. Don't you like when cool geeks prove people who tortured us in high school wrong?

Speaking of the stuff of life, I worked at the life-themed TED Global conference a few weeks ago (as a human signpost, not as anything interesting) and overheard a presentation about an eco-friendly way of dealing with human remains: mushrooms. While it might be a bit close to the plot-line of a film featuring the talents of Method Man and Redman for some people's comfort, it's an interesting idea.

Lastly, I'd like to return to the idea of good common sense. If you find yourself flagging this week, Hamish McDougall has a few suggestions to pep you up a wee bit.

Have a great week, Sidepodders! I'll see you in the comments :)

I hope it will be! I have fingers (and toes and just about every other body part) crossed for a phonecall that should be coming this week from a very cool potential employer (no details...don't want to jinx it).

me too. I'm not sure how it got to be August, though. It must have been all those great days in the UK during July.

I love this daily, Bridget! I love science stuff. I have to educate myself on most of what you're talking about, so I'm eager to read the links.

I had no idea that the Higgs Boson research was going so well

I know, right? I was blown away! I'd read something a little while back, but the person who wrote the article was sceptical because of the likelihood of the results being noise, rather than an indication of something more exciting.

review units aren't sales, and they have to be returned anyway.

the FT didn't make it up?

Logitech admitted sales were actually negative for the Revue during the quarter, as returns of the product by retailers and distributors “were higher than the very modest sales”.

Logitech admitted sales were actually negative for the Revue during the quarter, as returns of the product by retailers and distributors “were higher than the very modest sales”.

That means the retailers returned more units to Logitech than were actually sold to consumers.

The way you worded it made it sound (to me) like they had started multiplying and the consumers returned the originals and the extras :)

    morning all

  • Leigh O'Gorman01/08/2011 at 08:59

    How is everyone today?

After staying relatively quiet over the weekend (read: busy), I finally commented on the new F1 TV deal

    "Formula 1 and Television" - http://theformulaoneandmotorsportsarchive.wordpress.com/2011/08/01/formula-1-and-television/

  • Leigh O'Gorman01/08/2011 at 09:06

...and I hope no one minds, but I'm going to avoid the daily post itself, because I haven't actually seen a single lap from Hungary this weekend yet.

    :)

  • F1Wolf01/08/2011 at 09:10

After staying relatively quiet over the weekend (read: busy), I finally commented on the new F1 TV deal

I read somewhere that Sky has about 10 million subscribers in UK, not sure how big percentage of the households that is. this morning I read in our news some article about plans of Fox International to go HD on all their channels in Hong Kong and somewhere in that article was a number of subscribers - 1 million which equals to 1/3 of households ... but that is only a sidenote

Anything related to F1 coverage would not be any sort of news over, not too many people actually care. But I would compare your situation to situation with English Premier League here. It is the single most popular sport on and off TV over here and every three years there is big bidding war between cable providers. Never in the past has the company that had the rights managed to renew them for another three years. It keeps switching from one to the other and back. And that means that about 2 million households and all the bars restaurants etc once in three years have to switch their subscriptions from one to the other service, or have both and pay for both, because the one that has EPL can't afford any more decent programming after paying 80 mil or so GBP for the football rights. Is there any fuss ? No. Few complains here and there about the inconvenience and extra expenses but at the end sooner or later everybody gets the basic idea that nothing is free ...

  • Leigh O'Gorman01/08/2011 at 09:20

There is already a post for this discussion here ( http://sidepodcast.com/post/bbc-reach-for-the-sky ), but as clearly marked on my post, the BBC is not free and never has been.

  • F1Wolf01/08/2011 at 09:24

well then that's mean the F1 was never on free-to-air TV :-)

  • F1Wolf01/08/2011 at 09:29

actually I would be interested in a bit of information. like for example how much a person spends while watching reasonably long sports event in a pub ? I figured out very quickly that it is much much cheaper to pay the TV company than watch outside :-)

  • Leigh O'Gorman01/08/2011 at 09:39

like for example how much a person spends while watching reasonably long sports event in a pub ? I figured out very quickly that it is much much cheaper to pay the TV company than watch outside :-)

No idea to be honest. It depends very much on the time of year (football season, etc...)

  • F1Wolf01/08/2011 at 09:53

following the complains about the internet cost at the tracks from the F1 journos. I just checked how much would it cost me if I went to Hungary and simply used data roaming on my phone and/or used my data roaming phone as internet hotspot. cost would be EUR13 per day, unlimited data ... looks like super bargain compared to what the tracks are charging ...

  • Leigh O'Gorman01/08/2011 at 09:55

cost would be EUR13 per day, unlimited data ... looks like super bargain compared to what the tracks are charging ...

The costs at some tracks are mental. Thankfully the wifi at Spa this weekend was free, Monza set me back €30

  • Leigh O'Gorman01/08/2011 at 09:56

simply used data roaming on my phone and/or used my data roaming phone as internet hotspot.

can you interface that into a laptop?

  • Nick (@Twiger)01/08/2011 at 09:56

Football matches typicly take 3-4 pints, they are about the same length as f1 races. (lets say 3.5 on average)

1 Pint at my local is about 6 quid.

a football match is therefore about 21.

    21x20 f1 races is 410 GBP :)

  • Leigh O'Gorman01/08/2011 at 09:57

    Brilliantly scientific

    :D

yes, with iPhone can, iPhone acts as wirelless modem then

  • Leigh O'Gorman01/08/2011 at 09:58

yes, with iPhone can, iPhone acts as wirelless modem then

    Interesting

  • Amy01/08/2011 at 09:58

yes, with iPhone can, iPhone acts as wirelless modem then

I can do that with my Nokia but my reception at racetracks tends to be shonky at best

  • F1Wolf01/08/2011 at 09:58

    21x20 f1 races is 410 GBP :)

so 9 months of Sky comes cheaper :-)

  • Nick (@Twiger)01/08/2011 at 09:58

    Brilliantly scientific

This however excludes what i will call the 'Beer variable'

....how often would i stay in the pub after the race and continue drinking, whereas had i watched it at home i wouldnt?

  • Leigh O'Gorman01/08/2011 at 09:59

I can do that with my Nokia but my reception at racetracks tends to be shonky at best

This is also very, very true

  • Nick (@Twiger)01/08/2011 at 09:59

so 9 months of Sky comes cheaper :-)

Beer is about half the price in the UK though :)

  • F1Wolf01/08/2011 at 09:59

I can do that with my Nokia but my reception at racetracks tends to be shonky at best

worked perfectly in Monza for me, and Singapore is only half the price of Europe :-)

  • Leigh O'Gorman01/08/2011 at 10:00

This however excludes what i will call the 'Beer variable'

Indeed, a potent calculation. It also does not take into account spirits consumed later in the evening, which is - as we all know - beer squared.

  • Leigh O'Gorman01/08/2011 at 10:01

worked perfectly in Monza for me, and Singapore is only half the price of Europe :-)

Monza has the luxury of being beside a sprawling city

  • F1Wolf01/08/2011 at 10:01

Indeed, a potent calculation. It also does not take into account spirits consumed later in the evening, which is - as we all know - beer squared.

that is my point, that's why I do not mind paying the TV company :-) saves me money (and liver)

  • Leigh O'Gorman01/08/2011 at 10:02

that is my point, that's why I do not mind paying the TV company :-) saves me money (and liver)

Given how much I despise Sky, football and consumption of alcohol during a race, it doesn't really help me too much

  • Leigh O'Gorman01/08/2011 at 10:03

But let's not talk about Superleague

    ;)

  • F1Wolf01/08/2011 at 10:03

Monza has the luxury of being beside a sprawling city

Albert Park, Singapore, Shanghai, Sepang, Barcelona, Valencia, Monaco, Hungaroring, Interlagos etc are not that far from cities :-)

  • Alex Andronov01/08/2011 at 10:03

Beer is about half the price in the UK though :)

And remember you have to buy those beers at home from the supermarket, so you only really get the difference between can prices and pub prices to make up your saving.

  • Nick (@Twiger)01/08/2011 at 10:03

that is my point, that's why I do not mind paying the TV company :-) saves me money (and liver)

Although I do love the atmosphere of watching f1 in a pub when its busy, lots of jeering & Cheering :)

  • Alex Andronov01/08/2011 at 10:04

And remember you have to buy those beers at home from the supermarket, so you only really get the difference between can prices and pub prices to make up your saving.

A can of beer is about a £1, a pint is about £3. So You only get £2 a beer to play with really.

  • Leigh O'Gorman01/08/2011 at 10:04

Albert Park, Singapore, Shanghai, Sepang, Barcelona, Valencia, Monaco, Hungaroring, Interlagos etc are not that far from cities :-)

Hungaroring isn't that close to Budapest. Same can be said for Barcelona. No idea about the rest.

The likes of Nurburgring, Spa, Silverstone, etc... might as well be in the middle of nowhere

  • Nick (@Twiger)01/08/2011 at 10:04

And remember you have to buy those beers at home from the supermarket, so you only really get the difference between can prices and pub prices to make up your saving.

Ah, i would probably drink diet coke if i was at home though unless it was canada or brazil

  • F1Wolf01/08/2011 at 10:05

Although I do love the atmosphere of watching f1 in a pub when its busy, lots of jeering & Cheering :)

football I can do, F1 I prefer at home, jeering and cheering comes from the kids and the 5 year old one takes F1 very seriously now, can't handle Vettel no longer winning races and that is interesting experience I can tell you :-)

  • Nick (@Twiger)01/08/2011 at 10:06

football I can do, F1 I prefer at home, jeering and cheering comes from the kids and the 5 year old one takes F1 very seriously now, can't handle Vettel no longer winning races and that is interesting experience I can tell you :-)

I think my main problem was I'm with Vodafone and Vodafone in Australia barely works at the best of times.

I think it makes it so much worse because you go to the track and their advertising is EVERYWHERE and it's like 'hey Vodafone, how about you spend some of that money on your network?'

  • Nick (@Twiger)01/08/2011 at 10:11

I think my main problem was I'm with Vodafone and Vodafone in Australia barely works at the best of times.

Mobile packages in australia are so confusing.

    A 100 dollar cap costs 30 dollars,

right so its a $30 cap?

No it gets you $100 worth of calls

    Which are worth $30?

    Right...

People are just endlessly debating stuff they have no facts about. Once we know which races the BBC will have, which presenters and commentators will be where, all of that good stuff, then I'll welcome the discussion, but at the moment it seems to almost be turning into arguments and harsh words over rumours and assumptions.

Weather-wise, it is very stupid decision for Austin and MOntreal to be back to back. They are so far apart north-south that you can easily expect a 10 to 20 C temperature drop between the two cities. So you want a nice comfortable warm Austin you will have a frigid Montreal with snow on the ground.

You want a nice comfortable Montreal , well, perpare to suffer heatstroke in the stands of Austin, if you have not overheated heading to the circuit that is.

I am sure that Steven has a video documentary of the 1978 Canadian Grand Prix, in October. Hell - Gilles was wearing a winter ski-jacket over his overalls and he was used to the local weather. everyone else must have been freezing solid.

  • Leigh O'Gorman01/08/2011 at 14:53

Ehhh... Austin's being moved to October

  • Jordan F101/08/2011 at 15:02

Hey, the temperature's only 31 degrees C in Austin, right now. That's downright frigid compares to tomorrow's predicted 40 degrees C!.

The other problem I think you have Amy, is that as a Kiwi, you might be taken away by a U.S. customs offical under quartine until such time that they have figured out that you are neither a fruit nor a flightless bird....

I am pretty sure at this point you can get your $1000 US fine back.......

Then again, these are the same people that where less than 24 hours going to default, here.

(I know, no politics, but how can not not make fun of this?)

Get some dry ice in pouches, stuff the pocuhes between two lays of breatherable materal and there - Cool Dress.

I think they have the same thing for underwater or winter get, but in this case, the gel gives off heat, so we have the technology availble, whe just need somethign that will asbsorb heat.

The first thing that comes to mind is extremely impractical as it is diamonds.

I wonder if Norwich City's colours were influenced by Lotus or vice versa. Too much of a coincidence for me for them to have similar colour schemes (now or in the 60s).

I doubt it. Lotus started in London and they were green because all British cars were green. I am not sure why the yellow stripes suddenly appeared in the mid 60s though

BRG is not a real colour. It has become a colour now but British cars raced in all sorts of greens just as French used all sorts of blues and Italians a whole range of reds

BRG is not a real colour.

Whatever part of the Rover Group that owns the rights to it may disagree, BMW I expect

  • Steven Roy01/08/2011 at 16:52

The BRM's and the Lotus' used very close shades though

At some times but the P57 Graham Hill won his first title in was much closer to the traditional Aston Martin green which is about as far from BRG as you can get. It is paler and more metallic than it looks in this photo

    http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=brm++1962&view=detail&id=1D55E55DC896F7379364CB4F498A17F55D4A2AA1&first=0&FORM=IDFRIR

The BRMs eventually had orange noses so maybe there was some agreement by the teams to add distinctiveness

I'm happy to volunteer to be the archivist/librarian. Someone has to make sure all those logs are updated and the mission is correctly documented so that when other people go boldly (yes, it should be to go boldly) they know where we went. I will need non-apple shiny things to work with.

I love the jobs people are volunteering for. I thought everyone would want to be the captain but people are coming up with great suggestions. This could be the first space adventure ever where the bridge crew are irrelevant

I need non-Apple too but the rest of this lot won't touch anything that Steve doesn't approve of.

I hear investors like dividends, Apple don't seem to agree. The phenomenal rise in share price is thought to be enough of a return.

Exactly. People are buying because they expect the share value to go up so don't pay dividends and push the share price up a penny.

When Apple was deep in strife in the late 90's, Microsoft injected $150m which saved the company. Since Steve returned I think he never wants them to be in that position again

It is incredible how many companies they haven't bought.

They are definitely winning but it still seems odd to have $75 billion doing nothing. Well nothing other than making a billion a year (ish) in interest. They made the money by building a business so you would think the logical thing would be to build more businesss. It's not like losing $5 billion is going to harm them

That gives them an immense negotiation position to pay up front for big contracts or build enormous data farms in North Carolina or an iPad factory in Brazil, without looking at their statements

If they consistently fail. But they could have been buying large percentages of everything that has launched in silicon valley in the last 20 years. They could own 20% of twitter/facebook/everything. Sure some would fail but they could have the inside track on every influential company in the tech sector. Although all tech people seem to be Mac/iphone users anyway so maybe they would not have gained much

I just think it is very sad that so many good racing people were priced out of business by people using the sport. Williams only became uncompetitive when manufacturers switched from supplying engines to buying teams. Had the manufacturers never bought teams we would have most of the teams on the grid owned and run by people who live and breathe racing

Has Joe shown his lap charts before?

    Yes.

Mr C even promised on an Aside that he would do a lapchart for one race

  • Mr C01/08/2011 at 18:35

The basement is reserved for Jerri Ellsworth (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeri_Ellsworth). You should listen to the Triangulation episode where they talk to her. :)

    true enough.

Attempting your first lap chart this year seems like diving right in at the deep end.

  • Steven Roy01/08/2011 at 18:44

Attempting your first lap chart this year seems like diving right in at the deep end.

    Definitely.

I know it means going outside but it would be a lot easier to try it at a track with a 10 lap race for slower cars where there are not pit stops

  • Mr C01/08/2011 at 18:50

    Sneaky.

Go back to the 60s and watch an interesting race but lousy reliability. THe second half of the race will problably only have 8 cars. Plus they had longer circuits so fewer laps

  • Nick01/08/2011 at 19:05

There have been a few weeks where there hasn't. Sorted now, Good Reader to the rescue :D

For the record I hate skype today.

First it wasn't picking up my mic despite this being the same one it preferred the last time. Then when I switched headsets it worked perfectly. I tried ten attempts with the previous headset and it never once asked me to rate the call but once with the other headset when everything was perfect it asked for a rating. Then I try to phone in my word which I am still not sure of and it crashed leaving me with a message saying skype is not working

It worked after it had shut itself down and restarted and I have left my word for the race. I have never had to decide on a word after I said 'my word for the race is' before. Not sure if that will make the word more or less interesting

  • Kai01/08/2011 at 19:40

Speaking of calling, etc, I have to decide if I want to shell out the cash to get a toll free number, but my residential provider doesn't do those anymore, so I'd have to have a separate business line put in (at least $85, + $34 to $49 per month depending on the plan I choose).

I don't know if it's worth it. Skype is free, but maybe some people won't be tech minded and will not want to use it. Thoughts?

I think the loss of dropio is another contributor to the dip in community activity. It was great that we had one place where people could put pics, videos etc. It was fabulous when we did sidepodradio because I just set up a couple of accounts. One where people could upload their shows and one only I knew about where I could move the shows to so no-one could listen to them before the proper day.

it was suggested to me that i try wordpress.org in order to create my photography website. I know a few people here have used wordpress and things and i was wondering if anyone could give me any advice as to if this is the right direction? I've been looking at specialist sites such as viewbook but their layout seems very limited and i cant attach a domain name unless i pay the full rate which i can't afford.

Here is an example of something created using wordpress.org by a very talented photographer - http://www.jameypricephoto.com/

I hope it's alright to comment this in the daily. i trust your opinions and well.. 140 characters isn't enough to explain all that..

thing is i don't want to blog.. i have my blog, i want a portfolio site. maybe with a blog plug in if i want to.. but at the moment.. just a nice place for photos photos and more photos..

ahh, makes sense. Wonder if you can just go through the themes and stuff on wordpress? some of the newer themes become a lot more customizable with in terms of whether you want them to be blog based, photo based, etc... not that I constantly look at the Wordpress themes blog or anything :)

    oh and a contact page ;) *don't kill me mr c* ;)

i'm sure you'll get on fine. i'm happy never to hear from him again (andy or jamie)

  • lou01/08/2011 at 22:38

we gave up on scrapping the daily post, so comments as normal. do you like her new theme?

    i love her new theme!

  • lou01/08/2011 at 22:39

Any thoughts on a URL, your name is already taken?

loujohnsonphoto.com or loujohnsonphotography.com .. i say .com could be .anything.. :D the second one is a bit too long tho.

  • Mr C01/08/2011 at 22:39

    i love her new theme!

it's a recent addition, they're plugging in some cool stuff.

Although, you may want to nab f1lou .com really soon

  • Lukeh01/08/2011 at 22:39

loujohnsonphoto.com or loujohnsonphotography.com .. i say .com could be .anything.. :D the second one is a bit too long tho.

You should call it Lou's Awesome 'tography. Like, LAT.

    Yeah! LAT Photograp... ah wait.

  • lou01/08/2011 at 22:40

it's a recent addition, they're plugging in some cool stuff.

so i'm right to believe that wordpress.org is just the big brother to wordpress.com then? just more flexible with more available?

  • Steven Roy01/08/2011 at 22:40

    i love her new theme!

Me too. I even left a comment saying so

loujohnsonphoto.com or loujohnsonphotography.com .. i say .com could be .anything.. :D the second one is a bit too long tho.

The only issue with Johnson is that there are a dozen different spellings so if you are telling someone the url it is easy to get wrong. Could you get louphoto.com or something short?

  • lou01/08/2011 at 22:42

Although, you may want to nab f1lou .com really soon

ohhhh! i can tell i'm going to end up buying a few.. f1lou would help with the brand building.. but to start with my site will be an example of not just motorsport pics.

  • Lukeh01/08/2011 at 22:42

how many words are they pressing?!

  • Bassano01/08/2011 at 22:42

... Could you get louphoto.com or something short?

Exists but not being used except to squat

  • Lukeh01/08/2011 at 22:43

ohhhh! i can tell i'm going to end up buying a few.. f1lou would help with the brand building.. but to start with my site will be an example of not just motorsport pics.

You could always use that to direct to your photo website too even if it's called something different. Then f1lou.com will forever be yours!

(until you stop paying for it)

  • Bassano01/08/2011 at 22:43

ohhhh! i can tell i'm going to end up buying a few.. f1lou would help with the brand building.. but to start with my site will be an example of not just motorsport pics.

Yeah, but if you can get it cheaply, it could be worth snapping it up for the future

but.. that't my name.. i hate having such a common name. My parents should have thought about domain names... ;) i do have some lovely business cards a friend is currently designing but i can see the issue.

Can i do a quick poll, which appears more professional? loujohnsonphoto or louphoto? I want something i can keep for a looonnnng time..

and i'll buy f1lou.com tomorrow anyway

  • Mr C01/08/2011 at 22:47

  • lou01/08/2011 at 22:48

    oooh, moo.com?

we're gonna get them printed there i think, but he's designing me a logo and things. he suggested rounded corner cards and i pointed him in that direction and he loved the stats about paper quality and bleed and things i don't fully understand.. :) he does love his graphics. last time i spoke to him he'd been choosing me a typeface for about 2 days.. :D

  • Lukeh01/08/2011 at 22:48

I'm gonna go with loujohnsonphoto in terms of professionalism

  • lou01/08/2011 at 22:51

    yeah, that's moo :)

Janna showed me Christine's and the quality is amazing! very good job :)

    ohhhh, so many choices!!

  • Steven Roy01/08/2011 at 22:54

Why don't you blog possible ideas and get people to vote?

Would people then go and squat on the most popular urls?

  • Bassano01/08/2011 at 22:54

    https://www.icloud.com/ is live [beta]

  • lou01/08/2011 at 22:54

Why don't you blog possible ideas and get people to vote?

i don't want people to steal any tho? is that silly thinking?

And one last question, as you've all been wonderful - is there any particular site i should buy my domain name at? i've never bought one ever and i'm not considering buying 2!

  • Lukeh01/08/2011 at 22:54

Would people then go and squat on the most popular urls?

If they did they would get a proper fist shaking. *shakes fist anyways at people who haven't even done anything yet*

I used 123reg.co.uk for TOATA but no idea if there's any to absolutely have. uk2.net were very useful with our uni projects for the websites we did too and domain names.

OK how about a name that suggests something

    internationalsportsphotography.com

  • Lukeh01/08/2011 at 22:57

  • Bassano01/08/2011 at 22:57
