So, the summer break is here. Despite Hungary's reputation for being a dull race, we had quite an exciting one! Vettel proved that he could actually pull off a decent overtake; Heidfeld lost most of his exhaust before his engine blew up; Hamilton actually made a decent apology; Button defied the usual jinx that accompanies significan races to win his 200th Grand Prix. I don't think too many people would compare today to a race in Bahrain!
Well, Hulki might, because he's itching to be behind the wheel again.
Hulkenberg says that if he cannot race in F1 next year, he would not want to remain a test driver and would look to a different series.
Have you ever wondered why there are so many systems in the world that don't work? Herewith This Is Broken.
Now for the physics geeks among you, an addictive vampire game. Don't worry, it has nothing to do with the likes of Edward Cullen.
Still on non-Edward Cullen related things, we have a rocky stalker who lives in a permanent twilight zone.
I don't know how many of you care, know about, or are following the unfolding search for the Higgs boson particle, but there's some exciting news. The researchers are being quite cautious about announcing it, but both the LHC at Cern and the Tevatron particle accelerator near Chicago have had similar results to suggest its existence.
As it turns out, our chemistry teachers may have been too closed-minded about the definition of hydrogen bonds. Don't you like when cool geeks prove people who tortured us in high school wrong?
Speaking of the stuff of life, I worked at the life-themed TED Global conference a few weeks ago (as a human signpost, not as anything interesting) and overheard a presentation about an eco-friendly way of dealing with human remains: mushrooms. While it might be a bit close to the plot-line of a film featuring the talents of Method Man and Redman for some people's comfort, it's an interesting idea.
Lastly, I'd like to return to the idea of good common sense. If you find yourself flagging this week, Hamish McDougall has a few suggestions to pep you up a wee bit.
Have a great week, Sidepodders! I'll see you in the comments :)
hello ms. bridget's daily post and hello monday.
How?
there was this race... and... then beer... the rest, i've no idea.
yes! although this is the first time i've experienced that, but it is nice.
Last time I looked at the time it was 7:30 and I was thinking I should hurry up and come up with a word for the race. Which I still don't have
i have a feeling it's going to be a great week. cheers brij.
oooh, pressure. annoyingly he might be rookie of the year and i really wanted that to be perez after the first race.
*Groan* Already?
I hope it will be! I have fingers (and toes and just about every other body part) crossed for a phonecall that should be coming this week from a very cool potential employer (no details...don't want to jinx it).
me too. I'm not sure how it got to be August, though. It must have been all those great days in the UK during July.
I love this daily, Bridget! I love science stuff. I have to educate myself on most of what you're talking about, so I'm eager to read the links.
Good luck
on a techy subject, scoble noticed that everyone on leo's podcast is using macs. that's staff + guests. no pc's in sight: https://plus.google.com/111091089527727420853/posts/Jvy4svA9ZFX
also infiltrating more walks of life:
The entire row on the airplane I was on on Friday night had Macs and iPhones and this included a dentist and a minor-league pitcher.
you can watch a table full of macs live here: http://live.twit.tv/
I had no idea that the Higgs Boson research was going so well
good luck.
I read something that totally blew me away the other day. Would anyone care to guess how much cash Apple has in the bank. Not assets. Just cold hard cash
mmm, i know the answer. stunning isn't it?
More than the whole US treasury, I know that.
Thank you! I'm always a bit self-conscious about spouting geeky stuff (however, sidepodcast provides a safe space for this outlet...thank you Mr C and Christine!), but science is pretty much as exciting as life can be!
Thank you! I'm going to need it...applications and interviews for dream job = high pressure!
I know, right? I was blown away! I'd read something a little while back, but the person who wrote the article was sceptical because of the likelihood of the results being noise, rather than an indication of something more exciting.
I'm guessing more than most countries have in their treasuries?
the google tv sold less than zero devices last quarter. more people returned them than bough new ones.
It is unbelievable. There is no need for them to charge the prices they do
$75 billion
Something tells me the math is screwed up on that one.
or the tv
they're not selling and review units were returned.
review units aren't sales, and they have to be returned anyway.
(usually have to be returned, at least)
the FT didn't make it up?
Logitech admitted sales were actually negative for the Revue during the quarter, as returns of the product by retailers and distributors “were higher than the very modest sales”.
http://blogs.ft.com/fttechhub/2011/07/google-tv-cut-60-per-cent-to-100/#axzz1TjGWhLC9
That means the retailers returned more units to Logitech than were actually sold to consumers.
The way you worded it made it sound (to me) like they had started multiplying and the consumers returned the originals and the extras :)
oh no, nothing like that.

G'night Sidepodders! Unfortunately, this bunny needs to be up in time to do laundry before a deathly-dull temp job.
Just had a random thought, did Pinkham shrug off the F1 to go to the Royal Wedding?
Night Bridget
where was it, she was in scotland?
No idea why she wasn't at the race. Didn't pay any attention to the wedding
Edinburgh
it was in Scotland too
she's wearing red (halfway down the page):
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2020700/Zara-Philips-wedding-dress-From-Royal-Rebel-Mike-Tindalls-vision-ivory-silk.html
good call alison. what a race to skip.
I'm not Alison :D
whoooops! good call andy?
much better :D
"Oh Natalie, a prime example of lamb dressed as mutton."
compliment?
noooo.
I think if hobnobbing with Royals is so important to her they should give the job to someone else :D
seconded. i only follow a handful of people. now i follow one less :)
:D
Nope. Means she dressed way to old for herself
Someone who would appreciate free flights, hotel and paddock pass?
also noticed on that page that Jackie's socks match his kilt. Surely that's not the normal Scottish way?
No. Socks are normally plain muted colour like white
phew, I thought I'd seen enough pipe bands in my life to think that wasn't quite right :D
I doubt you guys can watch Wind Tunnel with Dave Despain on Speed, but he is going to have Dario Franchitti on as a guest tonight.
If anyone is interested I can give the highlights, but I can't smoke the keyboard like Our Fearless Leader.
I must try and find a link to that tomorrow
I am not planning on being here much longer so not for me thanks
I will let people rely on links, then.
:)
ha!
ha!
I am not staying till 6am like last night. One minute we are discussing F1 and sidepodcast the next thing I know I am an engineer on a starship. Late night commenting can really change you future
i missed all that due to beer! can i have a job?
I got a medical degree and chose not to use it all with in 12 hours.
just realised that's the worst job application ever...
Of course
Volunteer yourself for anything you like
http://sidepodcastwiki.com/SidepodTrek
oh no, it's perfect.
*reads the contract*
Yep, you got a job.
Relativity and warp speed
It worked
nominated myself to be bassano's assistant.
I added that I have a major sweet tooth, 'cause I do. :)
Chief sampler. That has to be a vital job
major sweet tooth sounds like someone important.
I actually had secret chocoholic in that same place for you at one point
i would suggest before every meal and social occasion, i be called upon for duty.
I think we just named someone who does something on the ship or with the ship
yeah, that works. :)
All that alien food and drink to check out
So noble of you, and such a sacrifice.
*salutes*
hehe!
And I had to stay up 17 hours straight guarding Sick Bay to make sure the hypercondriac Engineer would not be popping yellow pills.... The Engineer has no honour, I say..
Added a request for suggestions as to the role of Major Sweettoth
Honour? Those are the square purple pills? Right out of those
No Steven, they are the dishonour pills, and there are actually diamond shaped that you need to rotate 45 degrees, and why are you pocketing them anyway? I could have you for serious brig time already......
Have you taken your meds today,Jordan? Breathe deeply....
We need to get a doctor on crew. :)
Nobody's ever heard of an unparanoid Security Officer? He's up to something....
:)
I also suspect that mr. c's real name is "Will"...... :P
There was a director of IBM or something similar who always said only the paranoid survive. Especially true if you are always in alien space and coming across things that you don't know if they are the alien equivalent of a bouncy castle or a new type of mega weapon
Don't shoot
I also suspect that mr. c's real name is "Will"...... :P
Don't shoot
Please?, I think it is set on "stun......"
JYS is calling into the Wind Tunnel show tonight, too. It's kind of an open wheel evening, it seems. Robin Miller is guest hosting.
Sounds interesting.
Dario's 38?!
Must be
He just said he was, so I'll believe it.
Man, that's cool.
I enjoyed Wind Tunnel. I don't usually watch it, but it's probably worth finding a link if you can. Good insight into the connection between Dario Franchitti and the help JYS gave him, and if this was Dario checking out what it would be like to be a broadcaster, he did well.
is he retiring then?
Don't know. He did mention he's 38, and he's made no mention of it, but it was more of a hunch on my part. He sat in as guest host the whole hour, he wasn't just on one segment.
you might get the jump on autosport for the 'as predicted' accolade.
as predicted by KAI.
'Mark my words'. Oh, but you actually can mark my words.
You know, once you hang out with someone, you can so read their vibes, ya know? And since Dario and I are *like this* after Goodwood, well, ya know, it's nuthin'.
;)
:D
Okay, fine. He asked me if I thought he should retire. I told him try this Wind Tunnel demo. I went to Dario and Ashley's house. We had dinner. You got it out of me.
#notreally
The perfect non-denial denial. Plug in the team's sponours and you would be a perefect spokeswoman for a NASCAR team, Kai. F1 is not that silly (yet...)
Nope, Dario and I are best friends now. Really.

woohoo, Pamela has our Singapore tickets http://lockerz.com/s/125607049
and tomorrow night we're going out for dinner. What an awesome week.
mine landed on my desk this morning :-) courier woke me up :-(
yay! Which stand did you go for this year?
same as always, Turn 2, facing the start finish straight
excellent. This is my first year in Zone 1, I'm looking forward to feeling more special :D
I will need to figure out how to avoid Rick Astley though :-)
their entertainment selections always leave something to be desired, for sure.
morning all
How is everyone today?
After staying relatively quiet over the weekend (read: busy), I finally commented on the new F1 TV deal
...and I hope no one minds, but I'm going to avoid the daily post itself, because I haven't actually seen a single lap from Hungary this weekend yet.
:)
I read somewhere that Sky has about 10 million subscribers in UK, not sure how big percentage of the households that is. this morning I read in our news some article about plans of Fox International to go HD on all their channels in Hong Kong and somewhere in that article was a number of subscribers - 1 million which equals to 1/3 of households ... but that is only a sidenote
Anything related to F1 coverage would not be any sort of news over, not too many people actually care. But I would compare your situation to situation with English Premier League here. It is the single most popular sport on and off TV over here and every three years there is big bidding war between cable providers. Never in the past has the company that had the rights managed to renew them for another three years. It keeps switching from one to the other and back. And that means that about 2 million households and all the bars restaurants etc once in three years have to switch their subscriptions from one to the other service, or have both and pay for both, because the one that has EPL can't afford any more decent programming after paying 80 mil or so GBP for the football rights. Is there any fuss ? No. Few complains here and there about the inconvenience and extra expenses but at the end sooner or later everybody gets the basic idea that nothing is free ...
There is already a post for this discussion here ( http://sidepodcast.com/post/bbc-reach-for-the-sky ), but as clearly marked on my post, the BBC is not free and never has been.
well then that's mean the F1 was never on free-to-air TV :-)
actually I would be interested in a bit of information. like for example how much a person spends while watching reasonably long sports event in a pub ? I figured out very quickly that it is much much cheaper to pay the TV company than watch outside :-)
No idea to be honest. It depends very much on the time of year (football season, etc...)
following the complains about the internet cost at the tracks from the F1 journos. I just checked how much would it cost me if I went to Hungary and simply used data roaming on my phone and/or used my data roaming phone as internet hotspot. cost would be EUR13 per day, unlimited data ... looks like super bargain compared to what the tracks are charging ...
The costs at some tracks are mental. Thankfully the wifi at Spa this weekend was free, Monza set me back €30
can you interface that into a laptop?
Football matches typicly take 3-4 pints, they are about the same length as f1 races. (lets say 3.5 on average)
1 Pint at my local is about 6 quid.
a football match is therefore about 21.
21x20 f1 races is 410 GBP :)
Brilliantly scientific
:D
yes, with iPhone can, iPhone acts as wirelless modem then
Interesting
I can do that with my Nokia but my reception at racetracks tends to be shonky at best
so 9 months of Sky comes cheaper :-)
This however excludes what i will call the 'Beer variable'
....how often would i stay in the pub after the race and continue drinking, whereas had i watched it at home i wouldnt?
This is also very, very true
Beer is about half the price in the UK though :)
worked perfectly in Monza for me, and Singapore is only half the price of Europe :-)
Indeed, a potent calculation. It also does not take into account spirits consumed later in the evening, which is - as we all know - beer squared.
Monza has the luxury of being beside a sprawling city
that is my point, that's why I do not mind paying the TV company :-) saves me money (and liver)
Given how much I despise Sky, football and consumption of alcohol during a race, it doesn't really help me too much
But let's not talk about Superleague
;)
Albert Park, Singapore, Shanghai, Sepang, Barcelona, Valencia, Monaco, Hungaroring, Interlagos etc are not that far from cities :-)
And remember you have to buy those beers at home from the supermarket, so you only really get the difference between can prices and pub prices to make up your saving.
Although I do love the atmosphere of watching f1 in a pub when its busy, lots of jeering & Cheering :)
A can of beer is about a £1, a pint is about £3. So You only get £2 a beer to play with really.
Hungaroring isn't that close to Budapest. Same can be said for Barcelona. No idea about the rest.
The likes of Nurburgring, Spa, Silverstone, etc... might as well be in the middle of nowhere
Ah, i would probably drink diet coke if i was at home though unless it was canada or brazil
football I can do, F1 I prefer at home, jeering and cheering comes from the kids and the 5 year old one takes F1 very seriously now, can't handle Vettel no longer winning races and that is interesting experience I can tell you :-)
:D haha!
I think my main problem was I'm with Vodafone and Vodafone in Australia barely works at the best of times.
I think it makes it so much worse because you go to the track and their advertising is EVERYWHERE and it's like 'hey Vodafone, how about you spend some of that money on your network?'
Mobile packages in australia are so confusing.
A 100 dollar cap costs 30 dollars,
right so its a $30 cap?
No it gets you $100 worth of calls
Which are worth $30?
Right...
it made no sense until I went on one :)
I didnt even get a hat out of the deal, that was the most disappointing thing :(
Jake's blog: http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/jakehumphrey/2011/08/looking_forward_to_a_rare_brea.html
Bit emotional for my tastes.
And a deal of anger and disappointment pouring into its comments. Not difficult to understand I suppose.
:/
Maybe they should have announced its on sky, then told everyone about the bbc bit a week after
a poll to find the most popular motorsport blog: http://www.longlife.co.uk/blog/index.php/2011/08/whats-your-favourite-motorsport-blog-competition/
Who knows?
Maybe it's a sign of my attention span and not being in Britain but I'm already sick of hearing about it :D
Wow - I've never heard of most of those
i voted for joe.
how comes the sidepodlink goes to the /blog page when everyone elses goes to their home page? your home page is so preeeeetty.
Me too,
Although i have a feeling its not going away, and nothing will change.
It's a sad day when F1 Fanatic gets nearly twice as many votes as Joe's blog
it's a vote for "most popular", not "best" ;)
f1fanatic is better at search engine spamming than joe.
People are just endlessly debating stuff they have no facts about. Once we know which races the BBC will have, which presenters and commentators will be where, all of that good stuff, then I'll welcome the discussion, but at the moment it seems to almost be turning into arguments and harsh words over rumours and assumptions.
Good point
I just visited for the first time in years. Hey I have an idea, why not cram some more ads on there! #mypooreyes
Surprised that scarbs is leading, though. I know he's a popular guy and all, but gosh darn, he has a solid lead.
hehe. had to make a banner ad at work a while ago, so i went to f1fanatic to see what website ads look like these days.
it has the widest range of annoying flashing banners in the world :)
i think he's the only one to tweet it thus far?
Ah, that explains it, then.
I see some of them are in violation or very close to being in violation of some ToS.
Mixing PPC & affiliate links like that is a bit of a minefield
What's PPC?

Oh OK
Snazzy :)
ooh, the amazing race australia is visiting Singapore at night. It looks pretty! I can't wait to go back!
Niiiice!
they have to get clues on the Singapore flyer, I'm looking forward to a free trip on that :D
crap, i just realised on that poll you can vote for 3. must.read.instructions.
:)
I voted for you and joe and another
i wasted two of my votes!
I did Joe, Adam C and yourselves
I did Joe and you because you are the only ones I do actually visit regularly :)
To think you could have given Pitpass a thumbs up
;)
Same here. I would've voted for Pat if I could choose 4. :)
Vote early, and vote often! :P

Prize goes to Amy for describing the internet
ooh whats my prize?
A Milky Bar (remind me when you're here next year)
ooooh normal people would forget that. 51 weeks to go!
It's in my diary :)
I hope I get to see you! I feel bad asking people to come to London for a meet up because London will be awwwwwful at Olympics time
which is why everyone should come to Hockenheim, clearly :D
eek, now what are you planning?
do you get to london before the olympics technically start?
Germany 2012! :D
Deep breaths Mr C, deep breaths
Maybe everyone should come to the seaside, it's bound to be sunny...
#wishfulthinking
i'll be a couple of days early, not a lot though. I'll probably leave Germany on the Monday and opening ceremony is Friday.
they moved the German GP so its not the same week as the Olympics start and now I can go to it! And I'm bringing alllll of Sidepodcast!
i didn't even realise the German GP was before the olympics hehe!
well, until they change the calendar again :D
I don't think it can be quite as big as Sidepodspa because I certainly can't organise enough hotel rooms for 12 people :)
awesome!
I like the sea :) Perhaps a day trip after my last event, the sooner I sound these things out (sorry Mr C) the easier booking my flights will be. I'll be doing that in about 3 weeks :)
hehe! i'm sure we'll all cope :)
yay! the seaside is awesome :)
Please can I request positive thoughts at 4pm BST as I have an interview for a job I'd quite like to get. Off now to read my CV and the job description to try & work out what they will ask.
Best of luck Janna! :)
ooooh, will do. be early :)
good luck!
Amy, is SidepodcastMontreal still a go for 2013, assuming Bernie has not removed Canada from the calendar as he tends to do?
probably :D if it's not back to back with the US though it'll make me :(
Weather-wise, it is very stupid decision for Austin and MOntreal to be back to back. They are so far apart north-south that you can easily expect a 10 to 20 C temperature drop between the two cities. So you want a nice comfortable warm Austin you will have a frigid Montreal with snow on the ground.
You want a nice comfortable Montreal , well, perpare to suffer heatstroke in the stands of Austin, if you have not overheated heading to the circuit that is.
I am sure that Steven has a video documentary of the 1978 Canadian Grand Prix, in October. Hell - Gilles was wearing a winter ski-jacket over his overalls and he was used to the local weather. everyone else must have been freezing solid.
Ehhh... Austin's being moved to October
Hey, the temperature's only 31 degrees C in Austin, right now. That's downright frigid compares to tomorrow's predicted 40 degrees C!.
The other problem I think you have Amy, is that as a Kiwi, you might be taken away by a U.S. customs offical under quartine until such time that they have figured out that you are neither a fruit nor a flightless bird....
I am pretty sure at this point you can get your $1000 US fine back.......
Then again, these are the same people that where less than 24 hours going to default, here.
(I know, no politics, but how can not not make fun of this?)
Weather-wise, it is very stupid decision for Austin and MOntreal to be back to back.
Ehhh... Austin's being moved to October
Good, the temperature should be like a High Summer's day in England, just enough heat to burn away the fog.... :P
I've sat through a GP in 40 degree heat before, bring it on :D
O.O
I am not of your English stock, and I left NZ because it's too cold there. I think I am half lizard.
Malaysia? :D
40 degrees Celcuis is a little bit hotter than 40 degree Fahrnenheit, my roasted Kiwi.
Like I know what a farenheit is.
if i ever make it as an f1 photog i can just tell i'm going to hate the heat of some of the races. i wonder if photographers can wear cool dresses while they work? i suspect it may be slightly impractical.
Please, Jordan, after all we've been through this week, can we please respect Christine's time and not push it?
Invent the Cool Dress and you can pay for your camera equipment. :)
Melbourne 08. Technically it was 39.1, close enough though :D
:D
Invent the Cool Dress and you can pay for your camera equipment. :)
Get some dry ice in pouches, stuff the pocuhes between two lays of breatherable materal and there - Cool Dress.
I think they have the same thing for underwater or winter get, but in this case, the gel gives off heat, so we have the technology availble, whe just need somethign that will asbsorb heat.
The first thing that comes to mind is extremely impractical as it is diamonds.
Like I said, Lou, we have the tecnhology. Now I leave it up to you to fit it into a dress.
http://www.columbia.com/Omni-Freeze/Science_Omni-Freeze,default,pg.html
Someone on F1F found the BBC Hungary song! Goodness knows how hard that was to find.

Back from my interview, thanks for all the positive thoughts. I should hear this week, I think it went ok.
I definitely hate questions that start "Can you give an example when..."
Just realized: why isn't JA in the motorsport poll blog when Joe and Adam are?
Good. :)
*shudders*
I personally use "Can you tell me a time when..." when I conduct interviews. :D
Going through some old bookmarks and found this little gem, the tone matrix.
http://lab.andre-michelle.com/tonematrix
http://blogs.soccernet.com/qpr/archives/2011/08/a_bit_of_silverware_tony_ferna.php
Tony to buy Bernie out at QPR? Interesting. Tony's always wanted into the EPL, while Bernie may be pulling out at the right time, getting QPR's value up by getting it into the EPL.
I thought he was buying West Ham
Article says that one fell through - and I'm guessing that the loss of potential cash from Tony just might've been the difference between staying above water and getting relegated for West Ham.
I see. In that case I'm surprised he's never tried for Norwich City
I'm watching this, having never seen Alex change his blinds with SPC help.
http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/1994206
Good point. Their green and yellow colors would've been a good fit for Tony too. :D
Checking out Google+. Here if anyone wants to circle: http://gplus.to/sidepodcast
NOOOOOOOOO
I had completely forgotten about that. I lost days playing with it before
hehe
You were the one who showed it to me. I was going to say "I know you'll hate me" after I mentioned it. :)
And it is the closest team to Lotus HQ. But Tony always said he was a genuine West Ham fan
I wonder if Norwich City's colours were influenced by Lotus or vice versa. Too much of a coincidence for me for them to have similar colour schemes (now or in the 60s).
I do. Between that and the RedBull karting game my life is over.
I doubt it. Lotus started in London and they were green because all British cars were green. I am not sure why the yellow stripes suddenly appeared in the mid 60s though
Here lies Steven Roy, eyes bugging out, teeth clenched from his last karting race, fingers contorted, as if typing...
It's was a similar shade of green to the BRM's. I always assumed it was to differentiate.
The green was definitely BRG. But I was wondering exactly about those yellow stripes.
Only my throttle finger is a problem because it is jammed down solid all the time
You also had the Coopers with the white stripes that were very distinctive. I just always assumed it was one of Chapman's design things rather than anything meaningful
Good afternoon folks. 1st day of F1 cold turkey :)
BRG is not a real colour. It has become a colour now but British cars raced in all sorts of greens just as French used all sorts of blues and Italians a whole range of reds
Are we going to see a deluge of guest posts to make up for it?
Xmas already?
Are you giving up F1 Bassano?
The BRM's and the Lotus' used very close shades though
can we sell you a book to pass the time?
http://itunes.apple.com/gb/book/thatll-be-day-365-f1-stories/id445977879
Nice plugging, Alex would be proud. I've bought that one, when I've finished it, I'll buy the second too
No, I'm just on the wagon until Spa ;)
Whatever part of the Rover Group that owns the rights to it may disagree, BMW I expect
At some times but the P57 Graham Hill won his first title in was much closer to the traditional Aston Martin green which is about as far from BRG as you can get. It is paler and more metallic than it looks in this photo
http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=brm++1962&view=detail&id=1D55E55DC896F7379364CB4F498A17F55D4A2AA1&first=0&FORM=IDFRIR
The BRMs eventually had orange noses so maybe there was some agreement by the teams to add distinctiveness
Is it still invite only, out of curiosity?
:)
Uh-huh
I hope there will be weekly guest posts to tell us how you are getting on and what you are doing instead.
BTW You have a new assistant
http://sidepodcastwiki.com/SidepodTrek
I always liked the Aston Green
Righ folks,
Must split - see you later
No, I think you just sign in.
It may have been registered as a colour but there was not one shade of green that all British cars used as some people would have you believe
good to know.
 I always need an extra hand at the bar
*hugs*
I did too. It was classy and looked like someone had put some thought into rather than just finding the darkest green available.

Still invite only. "Google+ is in limited Field Trial"
I can see the bar will be permanently locked while you pair check all the food and booze is up to standard.
I hope you have space TV in there for the racing
And Space WiFi, this isn't the Intergalactic Coal Hole
Although that could be a good name for the ship
Oh. Didn't look like that to me, but I don't know enough about it.
Enjoy a little something from the sidepodcast.com back catalogue.

I can't see this crew boarding the ship if it doesn't have wifi. I assume it is full of apple shininess to make people feel comfortable
Starship Coal Hole - sounds like our own personal black hole in space.
It should go on the list
Great idea. The Intergalactic Coal Hole. I love it.
I'm still on the fence at the moment and I'm looking the other way but I'll bear it in mind, ta
hangouts are cool, but oddly limited to groups of only 10 people.
My best mate had his third son today, sticking with the Gaelic theme, he has been named Finnian. Today is a good Monday after all :D
We need more people to volunteer for the crew. We have a huge starship that needs a couple of hundred people to make it function and there about ten of us of which two are locked in bar and one is playing with the ship's panda
Is that like an open chat space? Michael Dell seems to be a fan of those
You expect us to leave Space Dock any time soon?
I have never come across that name and have no idea of the relevance of the day
#clueless
Ping: http://sidepodcast.com/post/tweets-of-the-week-i-quite-like-cake-too
The new season starts in March so we need to find racing by then.
yeah. group discussion, but for very small groups.
Someone has to keep it occupied. You don't want an angry panda roaming the ship.
A new birthday!
Wonderful :)
I'm eating cookies while no one is looking.
I hope panda's don't like cookies. He/she could find my stash.
Definitely not but we do need a few people with starship driving licences and if we are going to head into space we need a doctor and a vet too now
Congrats to him! Yay!
Evening guys :)
Sorry I thought you meant there was some relevance to it being Monday. I read too much into your comment. :)
:D
Can I ask someone to look at the This Is Broken link in today's post and tell me if the video is Flash or html5? It's frozen my Mac but I can hear the audio
Lion seems to do this with iMacs, Christine or Mr C: have you had any issue with video/Flash causing issues in Lion [other than the regular Flash stuff]?
Usually, the Doctor gets roped into healing animals too. Quite versatile these spacefarers
I'm happy to volunteer to be the archivist/librarian. Someone has to make sure all those logs are updated and the mission is correctly documented so that when other people go boldly (yes, it should be to go boldly) they know where we went. I will need non-apple shiny things to work with.
page is html, video is flash (on mac).
You just want one less person looking for food and booze
christine's popped out, but i don't think so.
Ok, I've heard it's iMac related but I don't remember going through the Click To Flash routine on this video so I assumed it wasn't Flash
Just seen your comment. Grrrr, I can move my mouse but click nothing or Force Quit neither. Gonna see what happens when the piece finishes in about 15mins but this really needs a fix
I love the jobs people are volunteering for. I thought everyone would want to be the captain but people are coming up with great suggestions. This could be the first space adventure ever where the bridge crew are irrelevant
I need non-Apple too but the rest of this lot won't touch anything that Steve doesn't approve of.
Excellent. We need this.
Something tells me this job interview was less stressful than your other one today?
Volunteers sign upon the wiki
http://sidepodcastwiki.com/SidepodTrek
Just a touch
I just assumed the Starship was made in Cupertino, maybe it's Android compatible though it starts getting confusing using terms like that I space :)
Maybe Steve spent some of the $75 billion the company has in the bank building it and we have 'borrowed' it for a test drive
I like that :)
Incidentally, apparently Apple has more cash on hand than the US government at the moment
[probably not that hard]
I think our starship is way beyond any Earthly Mac/PC stuff. We need a name for this new technology.
It just proves that they are over-charging. They don't need to charge so much for the technology. They are charging a brand premium just because people will pay it
Yup
We are rapidly getting to the stage where we need a department to invent names for things.
Steve is from Earth? Are you sure?
Damn, that didn't work. Video over, still frozen
*reaches for button*
When it comes time to trade in my phone-asaurus I may go with Android.
if apple charge one third more than other manufacturers, but their products are one third better (probably more), why are the others making just as much money?
Isn't there a Mac version of Task Manager or is that the force quit?
or rather, why aren't.
I have no idea what anyone else is charging but no-one else is stockpiling cash like it is going out of fashion. Why would a business sit on that amount of money? Why are they not investing it or using it? Just seems odd
There is but only if the keyboard responds or you get a response from a mouse click.
It's a known issue, hopefully the first point upgrade will fix it. Snow Leopard's came after the first two weeks if I recall
I didn't realise you were totally locked out
They've probably logged your comment and have sent it to the folks working feverishly to fix it.
Apple takes 66% of the profit in the Smart phone market
Samsung is second with 15%
I've been typing on the iPad
invest it in what? they don't need anything. they have plans to build a mclaren technology center. why spend it just to spend it?
A sizeable donation to SPC sounds like a good idea.
Is it any wonder I am confused?
we're donating to their stockpile.
yeah, so they should give something back.
If they have plans fine. I didn't know that.
It doesn;t make good business sense to hang on to cash. They would get a far better return using it to build new products or to invest in other companies
I hear investors like dividends, Apple don't seem to agree. The phenomenal rise in share price is thought to be enough of a return.
If only I had cash two years ago when they were under $100 when I started following the stock value
people are still buying shares though. why change.
What is sizeable when you are talking about $75 billion?
but why? they're winning, not failing. have a read: http://technologizer.com/2011/07/29/a-brief-history-of-apple-not-buying-things/
Exactly. People are buying because they expect the share value to go up so don't pay dividends and push the share price up a penny.

When Apple was deep in strife in the late 90's, Microsoft injected $150m which saved the company. Since Steve returned I think he never wants them to be in that position again
If Microsoft kept that investment, it's worth over $50b today!
They have a habit of buying things for the IP or the brains
same as facebook.
It is incredible how many companies they haven't bought.
They are definitely winning but it still seems odd to have $75 billion doing nothing. Well nothing other than making a billion a year (ish) in interest. They made the money by building a business so you would think the logical thing would be to build more businesss. It's not like losing $5 billion is going to harm them
bloggers swap shop anyone?
http://www.vivaf1.com/blog/?p=7869
That I understand but who needs $75 billion to feel comfortable?
As much as they like making money and doing well, they seem to only want to make good products. Overall, they're getting it right. Classic Quality over Quantity
how much do toyota have?
I always find it interesting how people write for other sites. THis always throws up some great posts
That gives them an immense negotiation position to pay up front for big contracts or build enormous data farms in North Carolina or an iPad factory in Brazil, without looking at their statements
people have been waiting for a failure every launch since the ipad came out.
while every time microsoft loses another $5b on a crappy idea it harms their brand.
ipod, not ipad.
Not enough to win a GP. I bet an Apple team would have won a race before Toyota. Newey and Apple. That is a winning combination if ever I heard one
joe said toyota could waste all they like on f1, they made much more each year in interest. i bet they have more money than apple.
ooooh.... THAT would be fab...
If they consistently fail. But they could have been buying large percentages of everything that has launched in silicon valley in the last 20 years. They could own 20% of twitter/facebook/everything. Sure some would fail but they could have the inside track on every influential company in the tech sector. Although all tech people seem to be Mac/iphone users anyway so maybe they would not have gained much
Equity, not cash: US$128.32 billion. Assets are more than double that

woah.
When Toyota first entered F1 some journalist asked some really snotty questions to the CEO. He eventually asked 'Can Toyota afford to spend enough to compete with Ferrari?' THe response was 'We have enough cash in the bank to buy FIAT never mind Ferrari.'
:)
I think Toyota left F1 because it was the politically correct thing to do while the Car Industry was downsizing. Plus, Honda did :)
It has been happening like that for decades. THe economy is good so manufacturers throw loads of money at F1. The second the economy dips they leave. F1 does not need manufacturers and it would have been far better off had no manufacturer ever bought a team
It was much easier when Teams sold cars so they afford to go racing :D
I just think it is very sad that so many good racing people were priced out of business by people using the sport. Williams only became uncompetitive when manufacturers switched from supplying engines to buying teams. Had the manufacturers never bought teams we would have most of the teams on the grid owned and run by people who live and breathe racing
have they said what exploded on Heidfelds car?

Thanks.

I am sure it was Ted who said it here
Wasn't that a guess? I'll have to watch it again
@ScrabsF1
Blog post on the 'exploding' sidepod coming up
Just started watching this week;s Twit. First story is Apple. As soon as Leo said they are building a new HQ everyone else in unison said 'the spaceship'
We can't argue with that
They're all members of the cult.
I can't remember for certain. Scarbs earlier said the nitrogen cylinder and something else were in that area
http://www.cultofmac.com/cupertino-says-yes-to-apple-spaceship-hq-the-mothership-has-landed/99874
Yup http://twitter.com/#!/ScarbsF1/status/98021283681406978
I read his earlier tweet that it was inside the cockpit

True.

Surprised this fan video still remains on YouTube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s9tF7g3CwK8&feature=youtu.be
Racecar Engineer tweeted
In case you have not heard - the R31 explosion was a nitrogen bottle bursting, the engine problem was a double exhaust failure...

Looks like the de-stressing is going well
Good for him. Did the GP+ emails just stop?
omg i haven't downloaded.
I love Leo's new studio. Looks fantastic
want!
There definitely wasn't one this week.
Mr C: Have you tried Adobe's html5 creator Edge?
yeah, it's ace. will probs put a demo up when i get a second. browser ads are about to get more annoying.
There have been a few weeks where there hasn't. Sorted now, Good Reader to the rescue :D
:(
html5 edge demo from adobe: http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/edge/resources/richad/csAd004.html
It's not in a bunker though
his basement is :)
The cross panning shot they use makes it look like 3-D
Wonder what the rent for the basement is?
More than a few bricks
Has Joe shown his lap charts before?
Maybe he wouldn't notice if sidepodcast sneaked in and set up their studio there
The basement is reserved for Jerri Ellsworth (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeri_Ellsworth). You should listen to the Triangulation episode where they talk to her. :)
on the blog.
They might notice the owl
In GP+
Yes.
Mr C even promised on an Aside that he would do a lapchart for one race
i heard he offered, did she accept?
I heard that
i don't have the talent.
I think doing it on TV coverage would be impossible
true enough.
Attempting your first lap chart this year seems like diving right in at the deep end.
Definitely.
I know it means going outside but it would be a lot easier to try it at a track with a 10 lap race for slower cars where there are not pit stops
i never signed up to that.
I was thinking more waiting until time travel was invented and going back to a dull one.
Just before Valencia should do it :D
:D
Sneaky.
Go back to the 60s and watch an interesting race but lousy reliability. THe second half of the race will problably only have 8 cars. Plus they had longer circuits so fewer laps
I got one, good job too or I would only have realised next week!
How odd
bassano, better colours in tis gp plus? more pastel.
Looks the same to me
oh.
Well, there may be some new colours too but it's the design structure I don't like, not just the colour hue
For the record I hate skype today.
First it wasn't picking up my mic despite this being the same one it preferred the last time. Then when I switched headsets it worked perfectly. I tried ten attempts with the previous headset and it never once asked me to rate the call but once with the other headset when everything was perfect it asked for a rating. Then I try to phone in my word which I am still not sure of and it crashed leaving me with a message saying skype is not working
#BlameMicrosoft :D
If only Apple had enough free cash to buy it imagine how shiny it would be
Couldn't see it remaining free then but everyone would love it more :D
True
It worked after it had shut itself down and restarted and I have left my word for the race. I have never had to decide on a word after I said 'my word for the race is' before. Not sure if that will make the word more or less interesting
hehe. they don't need to buy skype, the invented something better: http://www.apple.com/uk/iphone/features/facetime.html
That's not better. There is no sidepodcast facetime account to call
That came up today on Mac OS Ken. Stevesaid at the Keynote where it was announced [WWDC 2010?] that it would be open source and a 'standard'
One year on, still nuttin'
yet. but point taken.
[email protected] ?
is there an answerphone service?
Ahh! Good point, you'd never be able to answer :)
Speaking of calling, etc, I have to decide if I want to shell out the cash to get a toll free number, but my residential provider doesn't do those anymore, so I'd have to have a separate business line put in (at least $85, + $34 to $49 per month depending on the plan I choose).
I don't know if it's worth it. Skype is free, but maybe some people won't be tech minded and will not want to use it. Thoughts?
how much is a skype-in number?
Don't do it until it can sustain itself. Mobile?
What's that?
We need Kathi. She is the skype expert
http://www.skype.com/intl/en/features/allfeatures/online-number/
Someone calls a number on a normal phone but you get it on your skype
I think if you say Skype 3 times, it's like an Icelandic HeadPing
KAAATHHHHIIIIIII
No idea, I'll have to check it out.
Thanks.
:D
Is she still in Iceland? I haven't seen her for a few weeks
It looks like a great solution. You guys always have so many wonderful ideas!
$60 for the year. Way cheaper.
Incredible deal.
sidepodconsulting.
think that's approx what we pay.
i say we, donations really: http://sidepodcast.com/post/soon-we-can-buy-toro-rosso
And so MFC.
I love the option. Thank you all for saving me from more contact with AT&T. I finally had to call them today to find out this info about a toll free number. I had put it off for months because I dislike them so much.
I'm eager to be more MFC but I don't know much, so your advice is invaluable.
"I did it with the help of SidepodConsulting!"
This sounds like a must see:
[New Sherlock] Benedict Cumberbatch as Stephen Hawking, BBC Four 22:00
I'm liking that show but I need to settle my ADD to actually watch it because there's so many visual elements to it.
I miss drop.io
I guess TwitPic replaced it's best feature
Best hurry up, the next 3 are in production
I've been watching on Netflix
I watched Despicable Me yesterday, what a great little film!
I think the loss of dropio is another contributor to the dip in community activity. It was great that we had one place where people could put pics, videos etc. It was fabulous when we did sidepodradio because I just set up a couple of accounts. One where people could upload their shows and one only I knew about where I could move the shows to so no-one could listen to them before the proper day.
facebook surely. pics, video, audio etc.
Oh, I loved that one. I didn't warm to it in the first 15 minutes or so, but I'm so glad I watched the whole thing.
Facebook, schmacebook
It really, really is such a surprisingly wonderful film :D
so fluffeh!
The Minions were fabulous
They are. I love them, so does Janna. :)
Love love love :)

watch out rubens! ...oh.
we need an fbfb gap graph!
hehe
it was suggested to me that i try wordpress.org in order to create my photography website. I know a few people here have used wordpress and things and i was wondering if anyone could give me any advice as to if this is the right direction? I've been looking at specialist sites such as viewbook but their layout seems very limited and i cant attach a domain name unless i pay the full rate which i can't afford.
Here is an example of something created using wordpress.org by a very talented photographer - http://www.jameypricephoto.com/
I hope it's alright to comment this in the daily. i trust your opinions and well.. 140 characters isn't enough to explain all that..
hooray, overnight I got a tweet from someone saying my post had inspired them to buy a ticket to the Aus GP and overcome their fear of flying to get there. I assume they mean my post about the weekend. The power of Sidepodcast :D
there's a comment on your post, if you back realtime up a few hundred comments.
She commented and I saved the link for you
http://sidepodcast.com/post/justice-for-amy-how-the-australian-grand-prix-and-team-lotus-fixed-everything/comments#comment-1151039
That looks nice. Where is your current blog hosted?
I think it beats a Tumblr
I'm early to work, why not :)
wow!
i was impressed by amy inspiring someone, that's equally impressive.
I just parked it on a tab. Hardly rocket science
Lou, maybe ask Kai about Squarespace
yaayyy!
my blog is hosted on wordpress.com was hoping someone would be able to warn me off wordpress.org if it was awful. But the site looks good and Jamey has run me through the prices he pays and it seems reasonable for me at the moment. however most of this goes over my head, but i know many sidpodcasters are ace with this type of thing. :)
gah, he's ****head who was bullying @f1photos.
talented my arse.
now that I've got a stranger on a plane from the UK it's time to work on you lot ;)
Even bully's can be talented. The pics look good
certainly. apologies for the mini-rant. christine's just gone to bed but she might be able to help tomorrow. wordpress.org is improving week-on-week.
Be nice or you will get in a lot more trouble with Christine than just being put on the naughty step
oh??! oh i didn't know... i just like his snaps.. *shrugs*
sorry, hadn't realised anything to do with that. he's been nice to me, but can understand how him being mean could change your view of his work.
god i hope i don't become a mean photographer :(
You don't have a mean bone in your body
i wrote a whole post about the idiot, him and andy hone are proper nasty pieces of work.
http://sidepodcast.com/post/f1-photographers-versus-the-democratisation-of-media
Hawking was good on BBBBC 4, nice little watch for the evening. Benedict Cumberbatch is very impressive.
I over'B'd the BBC
i knew you two would be up to date with things like this. if she doesn't want it discussed in the comments could she drop me an email or something? Could do with some advice. Am eager to get a portfolio out there but want one with a good host, something that can last me a few years through uni before i look into making it as uber professional as i can :)
That was good. They are re-showing the Horizon on his Information Paradox next. Is it his birthday or something?
probably doesn't see you as threat. try taking some pics of f1 cars and give them away for free :)
I know. I made 44 comments on it
Andy Hone was so lovely when i met him but the way they have both conducted themselves on the internet really doesn't help with their image. I don't know whether to believe if they are lovely or not! the internet can be a confusing place.
Wordpress seem to be offering more and more solutions for image based things so it's worth a shot looking at them. New themes keep constantly coming out too and I've seen plenty of new ones that encourage photo-blogging
heheh!
we gave up on scrapping the daily post, so comments as normal. do you like her new theme?
http://mrschristine.com/
I am a witness to him being a very, very approachable chap! #backup
thing is i don't want to blog.. i have my blog, i want a portfolio site. maybe with a blog plug in if i want to.. but at the moment.. just a nice place for photos photos and more photos.. oh and a contact page ;) *don't kill me mr c* ;)
i do want to make money from my photos tho? :) however cheap and very affordable i can do :)
ahh, makes sense. Wonder if you can just go through the themes and stuff on wordpress? some of the newer themes become a lot more customizable with in terms of whether you want them to be blog based, photo based, etc... not that I constantly look at the Wordpress themes blog or anything :)
oh and a contact page ;) *don't kill me mr c* ;)
#confidential
Oops, quoting fail.
Any thoughts on a URL, your name is already taken?
i'm sure you'll get on fine. i'm happy never to hear from him again (andy or jamie)
i love her new theme!
loujohnsonphoto.com or loujohnsonphotography.com .. i say .com could be .anything.. :D the second one is a bit too long tho.
it's a recent addition, they're plugging in some cool stuff.
:D
Although, you may want to nab f1lou .com really soon
You should call it Lou's Awesome 'tography. Like, LAT.
Yeah! LAT Photograp... ah wait.
so i'm right to believe that wordpress.org is just the big brother to wordpress.com then? just more flexible with more available?
Me too. I even left a comment saying so
:)
The only issue with Johnson is that there are a dozen different spellings so if you are telling someone the url it is easy to get wrong. Could you get louphoto.com or something short?
ohhhh! i can tell i'm going to end up buying a few.. f1lou would help with the brand building.. but to start with my site will be an example of not just motorsport pics.
how many words are they pressing?!
Exists but not being used except to squat
You could always use that to direct to your photo website too even if it's called something different. Then f1lou.com will forever be yours!
(until you stop paying for it)
Yeah, but if you can get it cheaply, it could be worth snapping it up for the future
but.. that't my name.. i hate having such a common name. My parents should have thought about domain names... ;) i do have some lovely business cards a friend is currently designing but i can see the issue.
Can i do a quick poll, which appears more professional? loujohnsonphoto or louphoto? I want something i can keep for a looonnnng time..
and i'll buy f1lou.com tomorrow anyway
oooh, moo.com?
we're gonna get them printed there i think, but he's designing me a logo and things. he suggested rounded corner cards and i pointed him in that direction and he loved the stats about paper quality and bleed and things i don't fully understand.. :) he does love his graphics. last time i spoke to him he'd been choosing me a typeface for about 2 days.. :D
I'm gonna go with loujohnsonphoto in terms of professionalism
yeah, that's moo :)
you need stickers too!
How about photosbylou.com?
Lou does already have experience of getting a name out there via stickers, it's only right :)
Janna showed me Christine's and the quality is amazing! very good job :)
all in good time. business cards first, then when i get a bit more money i'll invest in stickers, not sure what i'd do with them other than stick them all around uni tho :D
ohhhh, so many choices!!
Why don't you blog possible ideas and get people to vote?
Would people then go and squat on the most popular urls?
Mr C!!!!!
https://www.icloud.com/ is live [beta]
i don't want people to steal any tho? is that silly thinking?
And one last question, as you've all been wonderful - is there any particular site i should buy my domain name at? i've never bought one ever and i'm not considering buying 2!
If they did they would get a proper fist shaking. *shakes fist anyways at people who haven't even done anything yet*
sweeet!
That sounds like a high st portrait shop. Think high end
Squarespace and use the code Macbreak Weekly
I used 123reg.co.uk for TOATA but no idea if there's any to absolutely have. uk2.net were very useful with our uni projects for the websites we did too and domain names.
OK how about a name that suggests something
internationalsportsphotography.com
I would much rather visit Photos by Lou than George of Asda
Sounds like an agency and has no personality
*notes down* right i'm gonna need a day to sort out what i need to do and where i need to go for it.
*makes list*
I thought I would try and fool Apple by signing in but ohh no, they sure got me and I was caught! 'Mac OSX or Lion not found'
All it needed was Steve Jobs popping up shaking his head at me and tutting
iCloud will be available for the pc but maybe not just yet
hehheeheh
Demanding aren't you
uniquesportsphotography.com then when people ask what Lou's usp is she can say her inititals
Had to google that, Unique Selling Point?
Yes
GENIUS!
lou, by that now.
*buy
Are you new here? ;)
i'm gonna end up with more domain names than christine..
I am starting to feel comfortable here now but still fairly new :)
Christine is not going to like that
I have one contact in my iCloud address book - me. I exist in the cloud :)
Now I can sleep. Nighty night
i must also disappear, thank you for all the help tonight techie people :) much appreciated, i shall link to any site that may result when it's finished :)
night Bassano, night all! x
Night Bassano!
night lou!
Night guys
