Would you look at that, last day of July already! The months are just flying by! Today isn't just the last day until we head into the hopefully warm days of August, it's also the last before the 2 and a half week F1 summer holidays. I wonder where the likes of Stefano Domenicali, Christian Horner and Martin Whitmarsh, along with the hundreds of others that grace the paddock will be spending their time off? Perhaps more importantly, what are you all doing with your free weekends?
Today is a much more important day than that, and I'm thrilled I get to be on daily duty when this happens, it's Jenson's 200th race today! Wohoo! My favourite gets into the exclusive 200gps club, something Rubens managed some 100 races ago, but it's still special.

Credit: Lou
Happy 200th race Jenson!
I'm very excited as he starts 3rd, which is the best qualifying he's had in a long time. To check out where your favourite came take a look at the highlights from Qualifying here. As you can expect, Mclaren and Jenson celebrated this milestone last night with a bit of a get together. Jenson's old and present team bosses gathered (except Nick Fry? I wonder if he got the memo?) to congratulate him. His team mate turned up for a bit of cake too! Speaking of cake, well there wasn't one.. but take a look at the effort the Mclaren catering team made over these amazing biscuits! I wonder if they could make us some Sidepodcast/ F1minute ones? or maybe an f1 big picture biscuit? hmmm biscuits..
I'm not going to rattle on about Jenson for much longer but can everyone just keep their fingers crossed for him tomorrow please? He's had a couple of tough races, and what better race could you ask to be a wonderful one than the 5th anniversary of your first win, and your 200th race! Go Jenson!
In the interests of trying not to seem too bias, we must not also forget that Fernando Alonso turned 30 this weekend! Happy Birthday Nando!
Before I move onto some fun and random links for today how about we have some predictions for the race?
- Will Vettel hold his lead into the first corner against Hamilton?
- How many safety cars?
- Who will be the first to retire?
- Will Jenson finish this one?
I'm sure you can all think of a few more too. Right, and onto some fun links then'
• I know Sidepodcast is an area where a lot of people like Apple products and nice technology, so if you have an Iphone and use it as an alarm clock this may be there perfect addition to your life.
• If you could have your own tiny world in a tiny bottle what would it be and would it look like any of these?
• Nothing, however dull it may seem, makes a bad subject for a photo. It’s the way you photograph it that makes all the difference, take a look at these photographs of scaffolding as proof.
• And finally, have you ever seen a Chimp feed a Tiger cub? Well you have now.
That's about it for today, have a lovely day race fans!
The last day of July? How?
What's this? No representatives from Benetton/Renault? Where are they, eh?
...take a look at these photographs of scaffolding as proof.
Wow. I love those pics. It is true that it's how you look at something, not what it actually is.
And that chimp and tiger are amazing. So cute.
Predos time!
Yes. Hungary has a LOT of dirt off the racing line. It's more likely Jenson will take the lead than Hamilton, IMO.
I think Bernd Maylander will be making money... while he sleeps in the Safety Car all race. :D So that's zero.
Tricky. There's not really a bad driver in the field now - not even at HRT. I'll say Trulli (power steering failure? :D )
2 back-to-back DNFs are rare enough in this day and age, even more so at McLaren. Odds are too low for 3 in a row (it rhymes!), so Jenson will finish this one - probably on the podium, even. Decent odds for a win, too.
- Will Vettel hold his lead into the first corner against Hamilton?
No (wishful thinking). Hopefully Hamilton will keep his momentum going from his recent performance and do well.
- How many safety cars?
3. Maybe too many, but who knows.
- Who will be the first to retire?
Buemi
- Will Jenson finish this one?
Do you think I'd actually say no to this question from Lou's daily? :)
ooooooh love the photo(s) lou.
predictions:
- vettel will lead until the first stops
- x1 safety car,
- liuzzi is bound to suffer from something
- jb to finish 3rd
He still drives in F1? ;)
Journeyer, any aftershocks in the past few days for you?
Who is responsible for the Red Bull Kart game I am addicted to? Not that I am competitive but my keyboard is taking a pounding to make up for the lack of performance of my kart and the difficulty of overtaking on some tracks
Maybe you got a Webber keyboard instead of a Vettel keyboard so it handles like crapola.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! :D Oh that's just hilarious. :D
Just found that I was earning points that can be used to upgrade the kart. Went from being unable to get better than 2nd to winning and lapping someone in a 3 lap race. Must have been the Vettel upgrade.
Yep. :)
Kart is way too fast to be fun now.
Your competitors are probably saying the same.
I think I got the Schumacher Benetton upgrade.
No-one is seeing my data
Just spent more tokens on a downgraded engine. Much more fun
A gentleman racer you are.
I like the opposition to know it is me and not the equipment that is beating them. Real gentleman :)
rt paddle 3 times
lt paddle 2 times
rear light on
rotary 1 to 7
rear light off

then option 13 appears in the menu right?
I always forget that
"This is why I am the engineer Steven, less radio and more right foot please...."
Sorry the reception is really poor. Could you say that again. But not when I am racing someone
Fixed :)
"This is why I am the engineer Steven, less radio and more right foot please...."
Sorry the reception is really poor. Could you say that again. But not when I am racing someone
"Woodwiss being purple in sector one?, you mean?"
:D
My radio reception is really distorted. That last message was so screwed up you would not believe what it sounded like
Kai 31/07/2011 at 03:26:49
Sorry the reception is really poor. Could you say that again. But not when I am racing someone please
Fixed :)
Goodie, we finally hired a communications officer in the Sidepiodcast F1 team....
"Woodwiss being purple in sector one?, you mean?"
My radio reception is really distorted. That last message was so screwed up you would not believe what it sounded like
"Fuel mode 7, Steven., you are good til the end of the race........".
Does Alianora still have the team on her wiki? If not it is going to be really difficult to explain to Kai how we ended up with an F1 team in a volcano which wiped out Ferrari when it erupted
Hope you haven't given me that Shell road fuel and pocketed the price difference again
Errrr, who's job is it to go after the sponours on this race team, anyway.....
I thought there's still enough on Sidepodcast wiki for Kai to figure it out....
Can't remember
I thought it was all on Alianora's
That sounds normal for SPC. :)
Remember we once started to design an SPC tartan.
The F1 team got a lot further than the tartan. I seem to remember Mr C being really happy about being the team light bulb changer
We need a new project like that
Like a Sidepodspace quest of some sort?
:D
Let's see Christine => Team Owner or Chief Executive Officer.
Race Car Drive / Team Lead = Steven Roy. Car #27
Car #27 Race Engineer = Jordan F1 (that's myself)
Car #28 Car drive = Scott Woodwiss
Car #28 Race Enginner = RG
Alinora = Chief of R & D.
Chief Lightbulb officer - mr. C.
Sorry if I have forgotten anyone else, these where the contacts I had to remember in performance of my duties....
Could be. We just need something that grabs people's attention like those things did. It could be anything really. Just something that will pull the community together and let us all have a little fun doing something
There were others involved but I can't remember details
Yeah. If we all think about it we'll come up with something. :)
What sort of space thing did you have in mind? Are you planning on sending us on a mission. SidepodTrek?
I just saw us all on a spaceship with different roles, on a quest to say, be able to watch F1. Maybe another planet is all we have left for options now.
Steven Roy for Engineering Officer, he has the only prerec - a Scottish accent, down pat!
OK I have it. How about this
SidepodTrek
Our ongoing mission to seek out new life and new civilisations. To boldly go where no-one has gone before. But our prime directive is to find planets with free to air top level motor sport.
:D :D
I accept this commission laddie :)
We need a name for the ship that reflects the mission and roles for everyone we can think of. Then we can sort out what we are going to do with this.
I humbly accept this mission, sirs.
I'II take Tactical, just so that I can waste anyone named "William*"
* Think of how many times the command is given to "Fire At Will"....., I am only explicitly obeying orders...
Good. So what job do you fancy. Following the first rule of projects we are here at the start so we get the jobs we like and we either appoint everyone else or let them pick what's left. One thing we learned from the F1 team is don't just stick to normal jobs. If you always fancied being a window cleaner on a star ship now's your chance
Do we have anyone super stressed out enough to be the ship's Doctor ? :P
hmmm.
And is it your fault if every episode you shoot someone because you thought his name was Will and it turned out to be Tony or Slavek or whatever?
I am sure we can find someone. I think we should let people choose jobs and we can get on with all the important stuff
I'm having trouble coming up with something right this minute.
I was kind of thinking ship's doctor before you guys mentioned it, so maybe I'll take that.
No, because the command has to be given to "fire at Tony" or "fire at Slavek" or some thing like that.... It is no wonder why your are supposed to give us Tactical Officer s the range to the target and the angle spread, else we will just shoot whoever is closest and kept missing until we have thrown or weapons systems at the target....
I did graduate at the Imperial Stormtrooper School of Markmanship, you know.... :P
As a teacher in the States, I think you are sadly qualified fot that position of Ship's Doctor.
Doctor Kai? Sounds good. I have this pain in my leg so if you just give me a hundred of the yellow pills I will be fine. The last doctor did it all the time so it's OK.
Online shooting training. What could go wrong.
oh no, you're not pullin' that with me, Steven. I have to reassess your range of motion and take your medical history.
True. :)
Just trying to keep everybody goin'.
As Ship's Tactical Officer, do you wish that I triple the guard on the Ship's supply of Medical Scotch, Doctor?
I have the supply safely stowed.
I think Steven will benefit from physical therapy. The days of doctor shopping and lots of pills is over.
Well, at least you do not have to worry about which end of the plamsa is supposed to go in first unlike bullets so that is a plus.....
And we're going to eat healthier, too, because our mission is THAT serious.
#partypooper
But I need to be awake 24/7 for the next 5 years because stuff breaks down all the time and no-one else can change a fuse let alone re-initialise a warp drive
Darn! she saw though that one tooo! So much for securing the Scotch in my quaters!
No you don't, remember you can tell people how to fix stuff while you're asleep?
I definitely what to be a hypochindriac (spelling) chief engineer.
I have enough sugar pills to keep you sorted.
#placeboeffect
That is a genius plot twist. Someone one a starship where they are aliens trying to blast them out of space trying to make them eat healthy. Love it
And daily meditation would help to reduce stress onboard and increase focus.
I can't get them to do it when I am awake. It is established Star Fleet practise that the engineer can fix a warp engine with a role of duct tape and a coat hanger but no-one else can do anything
:D
Sorry, the Tactical crew needs lots of red meat in order to repell all boarders and fight aliens trying to blow us out of space....
If I do not get my steaks there going to be a mutainy. Guess who has the keys to the armoury?
If you improve Jordan's focus he is just going to kill more Williams
I think my dad was a Star Fleet engineer, then. "If you want something done right, do it yourself."
*rethinks the plan*
I think you could be on a quiche and quorn diet
Red meat is fine - grass fed, organic. I have plenty on board. You shall have your steaks.
Then do not issue the command to "Fire at Will" then, how hard can that be?
For 5 years or however long the Sky contract is. We are going to need to set up wiki pages tomorrow for this
The funny thing is we have completed 3 of the 5 members that keep being sent down on away team missions - what are left are teh ship's captain, the ship's science offcier and the poor sucker in a red shirt that you have never ever seen before and something bad always happens to him.
Sounds like fun. On a race day we can fill up all kinds of other jobs really quickly.
Good night guys. Looking forward to our mission. :)
We still need security, ship's counsellor although Kai's doctor sounds like that, helmsman, navigator/astrometrics and we can add all sorts of odd things in like a chef who doesn't want to cook what the doctor prescribes or we could have an android or a racing driver who tries all the racing vehicles we find or a window cleaner who is permanently having to go outside at warp 9 to clean space bugs off the windows.
Good night. Before you go to sleep could I have a few dozen yellow pills until you get round to sorting out your department? :)
Nice try. :)
:D
I thought security also fell under the orders of the tactical branch, Steven. Being the law of the land is sort of of the reason why I grabbed tactical...
Don't forget your towels, everyone!
You could be in charge of both
Don't forget your towels, everyone!
Not while I am cleaning the loaded phasers, Doctor!
We need towels as part of the uniform and serious punishment for anyone who turns up for duty without one
Don't forget your towels, everyone!
We need towels as part of the uniform and serious punishment for anyone who turns up for duty without one
We get to whip them with a wet towel ?
There is an odd kind of poetic justice about that
I think that it falls under my duties as Security Officer to state that no HAL 9000 supercomputers will be allowed onboard under pain of being whipped with a wet towel to an air lock that will be salmmed shut and de-pressurized.
I am sorry, Dave, but I can not let you interrupt our mission.....
What do you propose? Something that runs on XP and every time the space radar spots a threat you get the blue screen of death?
Hey the Lazers only fire straight ahead so you have to turn the entire ship to face the target so that I can fire. I would like the ship to have rotating turrets first before I start whinning about the lack of a decent targeting computer! If the ring and bead sight is missing from the ships lazers, I can still bore-sight the target!
Furthermore, These things do not happen on a Klingon ship!
We need a Klingon. Maybe you could get a transfer?
What you have is me at Tactical. What you need is a Klingon ship, one with the firepower to take on Amy's Borg freinds and win in a stand up fight.....Not something with armour so thin that if sometone with a weapon more powerful than a spitball hits us in the reat quater, twice, we are done for...."
And why is our ship in such a mess? I have to do all the work myself and the doctor won't give me my pills and insists after 17 hours straight fixing the warp engines that I eat lettuce and cress because it will give me vitamin Y
Well, it is still being built. If you allow me to do my job properly, I can try to ensure I higher chance of engine survvivability by increasing the amount of phyiscal armour around the ships hull....
And I am a little crabby right now making sure the intercomm systems where not kacked!
Do you think standing guard over these yellow pills for more than 17 hours are any fun, Steven? :p
:D
How did it get to be nearly 6am? Time for bed or I will sleep in for the race.
Night
Night Steven.

It just looked so fake...
Guess it shows who is putting the effort in...
GP2 race on TV now, it isnt raining but it is damp and the sky looks very grey
Morning all
GP2 would seem to indicate that overtaking is a little tricky round here
Bianchi is a bit of a fool, 2 accidents in as many corners,
Definatly not ready for F1
His head has completely gone astray this year.
So needlessly too, he has a great future sorted for him, no need to be chucking it down the inside every corner
Is the pit exit concrete?
They have to turn and accelerate hard on it, should be interesting if the race is wet
Guitiariz made a nice pass around the final turn, pretty impressive
Good stuff. Will check it during the week when I finally catch up with everything
Morning guys. Predictions from the daily:
- Will Vettel hold his lead into the first corner against Hamilton?
I think he will but I'm looking at Button to be right up there on the clean side of the grid to jump through as long as he has a good start
- How many safety cars?
0 for me, don't think we'll see any
- Who will be the first to retire?
rubens because of that damn dodgy car! Something always fails :(
- Will Jenson finish this one?
He either will or wont because his mclaren will simply disintergrate in the middle of the race randomly. Whitmarsh will call it an engine failure.
Other predos:
* Vettel won't win today
* a Lotus will get near the points but not quite enough
* Buemi will somehow get points despite being 23rd
Morning guys, gonna have to miss the race today as it's Mrs. Goat's birthday. Have fun!
happy birthday to her! :)
Hello Gavin and Lukeh, want to come to Hockenheim?
#sidepodrecruitment
I have noticed your planning on twitter :)
I'd be up for it.
woohoo!
Ping: http://sidepodcast.com/post/live-hungary-2011-the-race
You'll have to fill me in a bit with tickets and whatnot (hopefully this time I won't be at the other side of a grandstand!) but I'll definitely try and come, it would be totally awesome. If anyone can do planning though it'll be you ;)
Also Sidepodhockenheim is quite a long word :)
Webber wishes Fernando happy birthday and gives him a warning: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gGskBua7w6c
:)
Haha, Amusing italian accent!
I'm going to go to a travel agent in the next couple of weeks and sort out my flights, once thats done I'll see if I can find a hotel, will hold off on any GP tickets until the date is confirmed so that gives people plenty of time. If it ends up moving from that weekend I'll just spend it being touristy in that area, it looks like a really beautiful part of Germany.
I wouldn't normally involve a travel agent but since I want to fly into a different city than that I want to leave from it gets too confusing for me. The Singapore Airlines website told me to do it as a multistop itinerary through them would be $11,000 and i know that can't be right!
Awesome. Sounds like a plan :)
....that is quuuiiiitteee expensive O.O
subtracting the approximate cost of a return europe trip it makes the Frankfurt-Heathrow leg approximately $8000 :D
After I retweeted @TeamAnglais the other day about the cost of a flight to NZ from England I got a tweet from @FlightCentre_UK saying "maybe @flightcentrenz will do a special offer :)" then the next day I got one from @flightcentrenz "hi fellow kiwi, can we be of any assistance to you or are you in Melbourne at the moment?" and after I told them I was in Melbourne they replied "no worries, you can always hit up our @flightcentreau family if you need them. Have a good day :)"
I thought that was excellent customer service to hear from two different flight centres and be referred to a third, all because I retweeted someone and added a snarky comment :) I <3 twitter.
Oooooh! How awesome is that? And all from your own snarkiness. Not too shabby ;)
Twitter customer service can be so cool like that though, it's how I managed to get my HTC for free and on a good deal :)
Germany is awesome :)
I loved loved loved loved loved Berlin. And Heidelberg has a castle!
it really is so unfair how much cheaper it is to fly FROM europe than TO europe. They say its because your market is bigger and theres more competition, but its all the same airlines and the same planes! Grr!
Castles are awesome. Some of the ones in Germany seem so so cool.
omg me too. i could live in Berlin i think.. just for a year or so. my pigeon german helped me a little, but it was just amazing, a week wasn't long enough.
my parents were surprised my high school German wasn't much use. Um, I studied it for only one year and it was in 2001.
I didnt belive it, but apparently its true....
The Inters are blue rather than the wets because INTER milan play in black & Blue and are sponsored by pirreli..
http://twitter.com/#!/PaulHembery/statuses/97620157706420225
And this is why Pirelli are just awesome!!
If only they could get points :D
:D my german GCSE helped a tiny bit with working out menus, and having basic conversation. I could understand people but found it hard to communicate back.. someone asked me for directions to the nearest Uban station and could only point. memory fail :(
Morning all
Can't believe Jordan and Kai kept me up so late. They are such bad influences
I got very excited when someone stopped me on the street with "entschuldigung" because my brain went 'ooooh I know what that means!' I then proceeded to understand 0% of the rest of what she said.
were you all drunk? I read the comments and got very very confused :)
I was very sober. It all made perfect sense.
You need to choose a job for our space mission and so does everyone else
Is there a role available for gawping at the stars and wondering how big the sky is? I could do that. I have good experience.
Sounds like a confused navigator who is totally overawed. You should fit in perfectly.
As well as a job your character needs some unusual characteristic like that.
Wiki pages will be created today. Later-ish
:D hehe! yes that happened to me :D
Some bits and bobs from the weekend
Enjoy the GP folks !!
:D

Only just finished the race watching on delay and they seem to be banging on about the Inter call costing Hamilton the race, when it was clearly the Option call when everyone else (bar Alonso)
was being sent out on the Prime
Considering (I think) the Red Bulls were both out on the prime at that point and they put Button on the prime the following lap, I'd be furious if I was Hamilton, it looks like McLaren split the strategy to cover Alonso and he paid the price
Once he was on the Option, he was looking at 3rd best, considering it was the slower tyre AND he would have to pit again, the race was lost there, the move to Inters was not a gamble at all, its all that would have kept him in with a shot of winning.
Nice win for Button though and it seems the teams are all now really close at the top, so it bodes well for a great end to the season, its just a shame Vettel has long since bolted

Morning all
Can't believe Jordan and Kai kept me up so late. They are such bad influences
Morning, all awesome race. Steven, You have only yourself to blame for fighting the evil that is EDT.
Go see Dr. Kai in sick bay for some caffine pills, I think they are the green pills.... :p
I'm thinking I'll change to ship's counselor if the dr will only get requests for pills. That's no fun.
We need to fill the rest of the jobs while people are around.
For people who were (rightfully) asleep, we have a mission and need your help: To find a planet where we can see top level motor sport free to air.
Anyone get the Hungarian Chalk Talk video podcast to download? Or, if the website version is working?
Think a Star Trek/Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy combo.
Ohh, brilliant Amazon recommendation in my Amazon email today!: That'll be the Day : 365 F1 Stories (Part 2) [Kindle Edition] by Christine Blachford
Bagsy not Wesley Crusher :)
?
and. . . purchased! Can't wait to catch up on the 2nd half of the year.
and now popping up on my Amazon recommendations is:
Steve Matchett's book, A Mechanic's Tale
http://www.amazon.com/The-Mechanics-Tale-ebook/dp/B004GKLN8I
Has anyone read this one?
Sorry but negative character requests are not an option. You need to choose a character and some characteristic for your character.
So far Jordan appointed me as chief engineer because I can do a Scottish accent and I decided I want to beahypercondriac
Jordan decided he would be a trigger happy head oftactical/security
Kai was the doctor but now the counsellor who is trying to get everyone else to lead a healthy life and eat odd things but I think is a secret chocoholic
Our mission is to travel the galaxy looking for free to air racing

For people who were (rightfully) asleep, we have a mission and need your help: To find a planet where we can see top level motor sport free to air.
Well, find me a Will I can use for target practice. A good phase wound would keep you busy for a while. Otherwise, as we are still building a ship and assembling a crew, I am afraid it is going to be sleeping pills. stay-awake pills or headache pills for a while......
I guess I am recruiting a ship's master gunner / assitant security officer If I have to devote all of my time on one of my tasks as Tactical/Security Offcier...
And Lukeh decided earlier he is going to be the navigator who is totally overawed about how big the sky is and he is going to spend all his time staring at stars out of the window
It's what I do well when it comes to space
I've got this book and read it sometime ago. I really liked it as well as "Life in the Fast Lane" his book about the 1994 season with Benetton. I would recommend it.
Everyone has a special talent.
We need lots more volunteers before we start volunteering people
I guess it's only fitting that I keep the ship's galley feeding the hungry crew all sorts of yummy things to keep their strength up. While slipping in semi-regular servings of odd concoctions of my own devising.
Entertainment Officer then :D
Nothing on the BBC song. Must be a new song. Gosh darn, it is HARD to find.
Another of Jake's mates? Maybe ask him
Someone already tweeted him about it. No reply yet.
sounds good, I wish-listed it for later.
Looks like Matchett just put out a new one last month too.
http://www.amazon.com/Chariot-Makers-Assembling-Perfect-ebook/dp/B00550NY9E
since I already have free to air racing perhaps I'll just stay here and push buttons and say things like 'ground control to major tom'
Great. Now you need a character flaw or characteristic or habit or hobby or something for your character
Good choice
*hic*
I do request Giggles to be my 2-in-C of Security as he has experince in being a constable, plus I suspect a certain Engineer will be sneaking to the ship's dispenceary while I am on the bridge at tactical......
Can I have an unrequited crush on Lee McKenzie? ;)
As long as she's not wearing a bin bag again
LOL in RL even!
You will miss out on all the exciting adventures and it does raise the question why are we cruising the galaxy when we could just have gone to Australia but nothing says our mission has to make sense
I love people being volunteered. Especially when it is not me
That would be silly, how would Amy visit us if we weren't far away?
and if everyone was down here I'd really have no hope of getting people to go to races in Europe with me!
You do realize that me recommending Giggles at Security is to ensure you stay at your post in Engineering, Steven ?
We are travelling the galaxy looking for races. You would think with a star ship we could just stay in orbit and beam down to the track. We need someone annoying to be pointing out things like this.
Cos it would easier if we were in space?
Is Christine going to be the voice of the ship's computer?
Christine's books are looking like reasonably decent sellers in the US Amazon store.
Volume 1 is at #59
Volume 2 is at #52
under Kindle Store > Kindle eBooks > Nonfiction > Sports > Miscellaneous > Motor Sports
You do realise I can accidently beam you and him anywhere within half a light year any time I like by creating a fault in the transporter
I am definitary got my hands full and might need more help with the security side of things, now..... Think I will have some of those headache pills now, Dr. Kai....
good point
Will bassano have to wear funny hats all the time then?
That's up to her. She can be the captain or the window cleaner or whatever she wants
http://www.tvloop.com/red-dwarf/show/photos/top10/holly-1592/7 Photoshop?
Or Mr C can be Holly
This ship is more dommed than the Event Horzion
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Event_Horizon_(film)
Okay, I've decided then. I'll be the bluff and hearty chief of the ship's galley and bakery. Always with a balanced outlook for the crew, ready to feed the yummy noms to keep them up for exploration. With a yearning for a special woman, an unrequited crush on a blue eyed, dark haired BBC commentator, who doesn't even know I exist. :)
:D
Okay, so what urrently is the ship's complement and her name ? The way it seems to be going, a tongue in check comment would be Endeavour
the SS Eddie Jordan? :)
after all, I think he invented space flight, right?
Skylark?
The name needs to be relevant to our mission and probably a bad pun
:D
I like Endeavour as it would be quite an endeavour to put up with this magney crew for the duration of the mission.. .. :P
But that is a space shuttle name. Shouldn't we have something unique?
We should call it Tim.
Sidepod Starship Tim? Bit underwhelming isn't it? :D
So was Enterprise (it was the orginal mock-up) and you can not say it was an original name.....
That fits. :)
Well it definitely fulfils the unique criteria but I can see where you're coming from :)
:D
Exactly. We are more creative than NASA
Klingon ships all round with weapons ready and our captain, whoever that is, when asked who we are has to say Tim
More underwhelming is the fact that as our ship is an "SST" it can only do Mach 2.0 at altitiute.
1320 mph in space is not exact fast people....
It was Captain Pugwash's boat :)
I like a lot of the RN's ship names. something like Indomitable or Belligerant or Illustrious perhaps.

HMS Bounty ?
:D
Sidepod SpaceRace?
THe starship downright awkward?
ahaha!
Starship Naughty Step :D
:D
SpaceCases may be more appropriate
Starship "Irreverent" ?
Then it will have to be Temeraire (HMS Temeraire was at Trafalgar). It means foolhardy.
Lukeh is usually great with the word play. We need his help. Call him back from the stargazing
Instead of Beligerant we could have the Starship Stroppy
That is the one in the famous painting but I had no idea the name meant anything. I was working on the basis that times were tough and they could only get a dyslexic sign writer
Ohh! I like that!
I figured out that she was a French ship captured by the Royal Navy but I never knew the Royal Navy named newly-commissioned ships after previous war prizes....
I love that name. Although I have just a soft spot in my heart of HMS Pandora. Just think, we can renamed the brig "Pandora's Box..." Plus it is awful darn close to the word " Panda." might get me a few more votes.
Interesting
Ohh, you have some good points there. I like the allusions that Pandora insipres.
As an aside on the TV show Bewitched, when Elizabeth Montgomery was playing her "wicked cousin", she was credited under the name "Pandora Spocks" (Pandora's Box) in the end of show credits.
Or you could have a ship that separates into two pieces and the one with all the weapons that does the fighting and is full of surprises could be pandora;s box and the bit that keeps all the others safe could be panda
Sometimes I worry how my brain works
And your the Ship's Engineer?!?!?, Dr. Kai, medical emergency in Engineering!
ok, I'm the ship's counselor now, so I can only talk Steven down, I won't be dispensing anything. But actually, I don't see anything wrong with Panda and Pandora. :)
I shall bid you all goodbye for a few days. just about to leave my aunts and with no proper phone, and no internet until further notice i'm set to be returning to the dark ages. :( bad times.
speak to you all soon!
:D
Bye Lou.
Have fun
Darn, I was hoping you could him a booster shot to the arm or something. I can too, but my shot will be far more harmful to Steven.....
fun? i doubt this. lol
Bye Lou.
Drugs is what I need
:(
Medicine I mean
Umm, I just thought of something. Is current BBC 5Live presenter David Croft any relation, (grandson perhaps) to the David Croft who was repsonsible for TV comedies in the 70's like "Dad's Army"?
Darn, without a Doctor present, I think the senior officer present is the Chief Engineer. I can not go round asking Steven for permission to shot the Engineer as a threat to the security of the mission , now can I?
Don;t think so. People in the past have thought they were the same person
Thanks, just wondering
You know, I really shouldn't mention stuff and then go off and research on my own. I never know where I'll wind up... found a Dad's Army and A-Team mash-up on YouTube!

Difficult race today... its behind now! 3 weeks to relax, train and make sure I am fully charged for the second half of the season!
I like him but he is so under the radar all the time (outside of the roller coaster thing). I don't mind, I just want to know more about him.
Enjoy a little something from the sidepodcast.com back catalogue.

wiki seems like the right place for it. it's been awhile since something new and exciting appeared there
Wiki is the logical place I suppose
during this year's Hungary race the BBC team (and us) were talking about drivers/teams learning to swear in their transmissions so they don't get broadcast - so the other teams wouldn't hear their transmissions. If you watch the f1.com video, Vettel drops some language when things aren't going his way. He comes off looking very angry...http://www.formula1.com/video/
but if TED talks about hearing radio transmissions - then can't the other teams listen in the same way?
Okay so far we have confirmed the following:
Chief Engineer - Steven Roy
Tactical / Secuirty Officer - Jordan F1
Navigational Officer - Lukeh
Chef - Eric the Baker
Bassano - Entertainment Officer
Ship's ship's counselor.- Kai

Also the name of his majesty's dragon :D
We need a lot more than that to run a star ship and then we need to work out how in 2011 we have our hands on a 24th century vessel
Just watched Ted News and I hope Eric Boullier apologises to Nick Heidfeld about his comments seeing as it turned out to be the car's fault and not Nick's fault whatsoever.
Do you have a link?
Of course :)
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/formula_one/14359741.stm
Thanks
Have been out and about this afternoon and I noticed something - who knew timelords graffiti'd?
eric didn't say it was nicks fault. he was blaming the jack guy wasn't he??
:)
i (hearts) geoff:
27 DAYS, 17 HOURS, 46 MINUTES AND 21 SECONDS BEFORE THE BELGIAN GP #bliss
20+ days of coding time!
https://twitter.com/#!/gcreighton/status/97731825111285760
when they interviewed him after the race I think it was ted who asked him about the incident and as far as I remember he waqs insinuating Nick being on the limiter was to blame for the fire
some other comment said the driver revs it when the lollypop changes, so it must've been a mechanic at fault, either too early or the jack got stuck or something.
Ahh I see what you mean looking back at the interview on the BBC website. He should've been lowered by the jack man earlier but he still seems a bit miffed about being on the limiter
Interview in question
He definitely isn't a happy chappy though
watching it again, he says nick could've lifted off, but unless told to why would he? mechanics were at fault i think even if the car was always going to eat itself.
lou never said jules was on twitter?
https://twitter.com/#!/Jules_Gough
He said that their traffic lights tell the driver to accelerate before the cars is dropped of the jacks and the problem was no-one overruled that while they sorted the problem
News to me
got ya. didn't seem like nick was destined to finished this one either way.
She doesn't use it much. THis is about 12 tweets ago

heheh!
Ping: http://sidepodcast.com/post/hungary-2011-rate-the-race
I remember Lou mentioning to me ages ago that she was but it was protected tweets so you couldn't see anything. I guess she opened it up
ahhh. ta.

In regards to the Enterprise conversation, I will happily be the voice. Although I would also like to be Chief Panda Carer, because I'm not going if we're not taking a panda.

I can't see anyone objecting to that. We may need to develop space bamboo though
why was nic hamilton allowed into the pitlane today, minus overalls?
He should not have been
How do I create a new page on the sidepodwiki?
The best way is to type in the URL of the page you want and it should say, this doesn't exist, would you like to create it?
Thanks
There may be other questions before we hit warp speed. Lots of them
I'll have to brush up on my wiki skills too :)
:D
Hmmmm, was not there a similiar plot device in Star Trek IV, you know that horrible one involving whales?
SidepodTrek has its first wiki page
Why does NASA make such a fuss about organising space missions? It's easy
I am watching the race for the first time at the moment. I've never seen so many cars squirming around in all my days.
And Christine insisted on pandas for the racing team too. I think she is trying to tell Mr C something
Squirming is a good word for it.
http://sidepodcastwiki.com/SidepodTrek
The link makes it easier to find. OOPS
Excellent work!
loved seeing cars like that.
i know leigh mentioned this earlier, has the video been shared?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9QELK2Y4zuY
broken mclaren gt.
Can't believe they were all spinning before that and still went for it....
It makes all the difference in the world when you can see exactly when a driver touches the throttle because the rear steps out. You can actually see the driver inputs and that is impossible with all the downforce they normally have.
interesting. is it possible to re-create that effect without sprinklers?
Bernie, is that you?
That marshal was very lucky.
nooooo. without :)
They said in the commentary last night it was a Lamborghini but the stream was too poor to tell.
The driver must have been asleep to do that
Take the wings off.
I also can't believe Vettel bottled it again with a car behind him. Stupid fluffy boy!
Which also sorts the overtaking problems
Aaargh FIRE!
he overtook someone at some point, i saw it. i know i did. he had an okay race i think.
yep, but there's nowhere to put sponsors.
Not necessarily. If they go ground effect you end up with full length sidepods with flat tops and vertical sides. ore sponsorship space
more
don't know how people feel about this, but google are live streaming the funeral of one of there developer persons (victim of an unrelated road rage incident):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CcI9RTMr7LE
given what he did, i guess it's what he would've wanted.
Or they could mandate aspects of the body shape like they mandate the minimum size of the shark fin to provide sponsor sites
and cars could still squirm?
Interesting idea. I can imagine this being a popular option for some people. I could for example easily see Leo's funeral streamed
oh, it just ended. make that were live streaming.
indeed.
Yes. Optimum race car design for entertainment is basic and has always been the same. You need more power than grip and you need more mechanical grip than aero grip. It is that simple. I first read that in the late 70s and it is just as true today.
That is why the turbos were great. They had so much power that the drivers struggled not to unstick the rears regardless what they did. There were reports of drivers having wheelspin in 5th gear at times.
A burnt out car reversing into the pitlane? That was very dangerous!! Vettel nearly smacked it. Major squirm. So so dangerous!
There were a lot of people in comments unhappy about how it was handled
It was one thing when it was sat at the side, totally another when you move it into the road and start wheeling it into a narrow pit exit while the world champion is trying to get out!?
Steven, I just saw that Eli Manning signed for $90 million with the Colts. That's $663 per second he's on the field.
O.O
he could almost afford sky tv!
hehe
He's worth every penny
:D
I knew you'd say that! :)
Quarterbacks should be able to run their own offence without someone telling them what to do
How many seasons?
Looks like 5 years, but I'm still lookin'.
He is already 35. I hope he doesn't turn out to be a Schumacher
CNN/SI says he "took a long term deal for less money" to give the Colts some cap room.
I sure wish _I_ could take deal for "less money" and still come up with (possibly) $90 mil!
That's very generous of him. Of course it means they can afford better players for him to chuck the ball at
Me too
Oh my god it's Peyton, not Eli, and he gets $69 million of it to be paid in the first 3 years with the Colts. I swear the news anchor said Eli.
WHen I started hunting for the story I typed Eli and couldn't understand why I did it as it was obviously Peyton
Those unfortunate supremely talented, mega rich brothers. Everyone gets their names mixed up. :)
There's a third brother, too :)
He doesn't play though, had something wrong with his back and had to stop playing and couldn't go into the NFL.
And their father Archie was also an NFL quarterback
