Hello there, Gavin here, also known as the F1 stats blogger for ‘Making Up The Numbers’. You know, I love the Wednesdays after a Grand Prix because by now, all the dust has settled and we can take a deeper look at the stories from the weekend…

  • In fact, the story about Schumacher getting penalised at Monaco has now ended, because Mercedes have decided not to appeal against the ruling. Check out AUTOSPORT and James Allen’s articles on the matter. Personally I agree with the idea that he should be penalised, although it would have been much simpler if the race finished under a yellow flag. But I think it would have been best just to swap the positions back rather than give him a 20-second penalty.
  • On that note, there has been a lot of nasty comments flying around the internet about this issue (not here of course!), with Damon Hill even getting hate mail and Joe pondering whether to continue to allow commenting on his blog. Thankfully loads of people commented in support of his blog, so now he has decided to allow them again. If you were one of those who commented in support, then good on ya!
  • James Allen also noted that Ferrari did an awesome job of getting a spare car ready for Alonso on Monaco race day. Personally for me, I really enjoyed seeing Alonso make an odd strategy work for him and carve through the field – it was the highlight of the race and he had to be my ‘driver of the day’…
  • Dank has written an excellent post about the incident of the race that everyone forgot about – Rubens chucking his steering wheel into the path of an oncoming car. Ironically, this could have turned out just like the incident with Massa at Hungary last year (which involved debris from Barrichello’s car) – but thankfully it didn’t. Both HRT guys had a good close look at it though!
  • I have just found out that Heroes, Law and Order and Flash Forward have been cancelled. Hmph. I don't watch the other two but I was barely staying interested in Flash Forward as it's dragging on a bit too much for me - but now it's worse because it feels like such a waste of time trying to persist with it. I give up on TV, I really do!
  • Finally something a little different. I am currently reading the excellent and controversial ‘Freakonomics’ series of books – I encourage you to do the same as they will force you to look at the world differently. Even if you don’t agree with their points of view, their ways of arguing their point across are very clever. They also have an excellent blog and podcasts which are worth checking out too…

That’s all from me – I do hope you enjoyed the links and that you have a great Wednesday – it’s cake day in the canteen so I’m all sorted, and I promise to write my Monaco blog posts soon (as I was at a wedding all weekend and barely made it back for the race)...

See you in the comments!

I think I jinxed Alonso, I said I'd leave a voice mail the next time he won a race, since then things really haven't worked out for him.

I don't understand how he ended up doing better than people who made it into Q3 without even overtaking any "frontrunners". Must be witchcraft!

Hulkenburg crashing helped, Alonso pitted changed tyres and could then go the rest of the race without pitting. In fact Hulkenburg's crash saved Fernando's afternoon.

an incredible job to run the whole race on a single set. given kubica killed is over 2/3rds distance.

the Ferrari is lighter on its tyres, so we are told. but i agree it was incredible.

might explain why he went off in practice on fresh tyres.

wooohoo! long standing sidepodcast bug is squished. finally you can intentionally post duplicate comments in the same thread, so long as you do it over 5 minutes apart.

should be perfect for le mans. it's only taken two years to sort.

I have run into that one a few times. Most of the times with things like good night or someone has just posted fastest lap etc.

World Cup is meant to be shared in gigantic HD TV screens.

There was a period when I went out to watch all the sports that I watch out with other people on the big screens. then for some reason here and there I had to stay home and watch at home. I realized that I enjoy it all much more without the noisy crowd around. I used to be out in a bar for every F1 race except those in Americas (silly o'clock over here). I think the last F1 race I watched in a bar was that Brazilian GP where Glo lost Massa's title in the final corner :-)

hard to tell, but since I updated to the latest version it crashes every 10 mins, sometime even while I am away from computer ... and the crashes do not discriminate, it crashes no matter on what site I am :-)

the thing I have noticed is it seems the female F1 fans tend to be interested in the wags and the "people" side of things more than the male fans. Obviously this isn't true for everyone, but it's something I've always noticed at races and on websites.

I'm not that interested in it, but my only objection would be the term wags. It isn't a particularly nice word to say, seems to be more and more derogatory and doesn't account for anyone having a boyfriend.

Without wishing to appear boorish, I've always considered most motorsports fans to be a little more considerate that the footballing majority.

I don't particularly like to see it dragged down to a lesser level.

If they want to do all the peripheral stuff and get PR just for clinging to a driver they can knock themselves out, just don't get in the way at race time..

at the moment, every code change to sidepodcast requires x4 open browsers, and then a deskhop to look at IE before release. only when it's live can i then check in android and iphone.

so seven checks before every release. and four for every code change. i can't think of a less productive workflow than web development right now.

So what we need is one global computer/laptop/mobile manufacturer with one operating system and one browser and then all of your problems will be solved. Now, who's going to tell all of the others? ;)

heheh. i guess if i wanted that i could just make iphone apps. have just sort of realised how daft the process is.

  • Alex Andronov19/05/2010 at 18:15

at the moment, every code change to sidepodcast requires x4 open browsers, and then a deskhop to look at IE before release. only when it's live can i then check in android and iphone.

Absolutely... All I meant is you could with the two make a single Android/iPhone/iPad app...

(although without wanting to get too much into it but how often does anyone write cross platform code other than on the web?)

  • me19/05/2010 at 18:16

Absolutely... All I meant is you could with the two make a single Android/iPhone/iPad app...

got ya. they're not the same though, because android ships with different typefaces, so nothing ever lines up.

    ever!

  • me19/05/2010 at 18:17

(although without wanting to get too much into it but how often does anyone write cross platform code other than on the web?)

desktop doohickey is cross platform, but i've given up on adobe air.

  • Alex Andronov19/05/2010 at 18:22

desktop doohickey is cross platform, but i've given up on adobe air.

Right but it's a hack... What I mean is for most desktop developers all they have ever done is write for one OS. Or at least one OS at a time. And with the web it always seems so weird but really as far as an analogue goes we are writing cross platform stuff when we do web development because each of the browsers is, as far as we are concerned as developers, different OSes.

I'm not excusing it, it's just something I've been realising over the last few years.

  • me19/05/2010 at 18:25

I'm not excusing it, it's just something I've been realising over the last few years.

    tis all true.

i've only really started to care very recently when trying to get things to match. and it can't ben done, when browsers on the same OS display text differently.

The teams have a more sophisticated timing system than the one available to the public and media. It divides the lap into ten sectors, rather than the basic three and this gives them a much faster evaluation of the way the tyres are behaving.

Most folk cope in those situations even if they think they won't.

that's true. Whilst i have the ability to pass out when listening to descriptions of bones.. or when i break one of my own bones, i've luckily never had the chance to see if i would pass out at the scene of a huge accident.

  • lou19/05/2010 at 22:29

    night to everyone who left

mum says that too. I just wish it was something i could control.. one moment i'm standing around this model skeleton in biology, the next i feel awful and i'm on the floor with people crowding round me...

Same goes for when i first stepped foot inside a hospital.. i sat down and moments later i'm laying in a bed of my own with a nurse giving me a glass of water. very odd.. and very scary when you're young and it first happens.

Awww you're so good. I always figured they couldn't really do anything about it anyways.... If they ask just tell them you didn't want to waste valuable study time traveling to school and back.

Is anyone good with excel? I'm trying to do some staff rotas and it's driving me mad.... If I type in something like 8-12 it thinks I'm talking about 8th December rather than start and finish time of a shift, is there any way to stop it behaving so moronically??

Type '8-12 and it knows it is just data so it will appear as 8-12

  • Steven Roy19/05/2010 at 23:31

It knows it is text not data.

  • Bert19/05/2010 at 23:32

or change the formating of the cell as TEXT, you may need to re-type the text.
