It is Tuesday again, but this week there is no F1 racing to look forward to. Boohoo :(. There are plenty of F1 news though :), so I better get started with the bullet points:

Finally, please vote for your favorite drink. Careful though, as your response may decide if you will ever get invited to Mr & Mrs C's house.

Vote Now!

Hello everyone. Sorry I wasn't around for the race this two previous weekends. This season is officially on snooze mode where I just catch the race on the replay on SpeedTV. The only other year I've done this is when Schumacher won almost every race in 2002.

As for the news of the latest team rumored to try for the 13th grid spot all I can say is.......... (*deep and long groan*)............. oh no... not again.

I'd rather have him than Webber, whom the rumor is surrounding recently. Mark is doing a fine job now, but it's only a matter of time before he goes back to being the most unlucky person in F1.

I agree. I honestly dont know if he has the mental fortitude either. This is the same guy we saw crying in the back of the paddock after he stuffed it into Webber a couple years back.

I just think he is not fast enough to go against Alonso especially at Ferrari where Alonso speaks the language and they make cars that handle the way he likes. He is far better of staying at Red Bull where the owner speaks his language and he is the one they would rather won

I'm not sure that he's not fast enough. Vettel won in a Toro Rosso, so I'd say the kid has plenty of speed. The political game would crush him though.

The Toro Rosso was a Red Bull with a Ferrari engine so there is no reason why if the team managed to set it up that it wasn't a fast car. He is not exactly blowing Webber away and no-one believes Webber is on a par with Hamilton or Alonso.

  • Jim Newman18/05/2010 at 00:01

The perfect teammate for Alonso I'd say would be Kimi. Kimi doesn't care and is very nonchalant. He only cares about himself, doesn't bother himself with the team or teammate. Perfect counter to someone who is as demanding as Nando is.

  • Jim Newman18/05/2010 at 00:02

But the chances of seeing Kimi back in red are slim

I think he probably has his perfect team mate now. THey like the same set up in the car and Massa is slower than him.

Team obviously didn't agree though. I think Massa deserves to take on Vettel's "rubbish overtaker" title. He's nowhere near aggressive enough.

We have very bad tap water in Washington DC. Not advisable to drink it.

Yeah, Nick can't drink his tap water. Because it's desalinated, there's epic amounts of salt in it, it's really bad for you.

  • Amy18/05/2010 at 02:18

Ooh another reason for me not to move to Dubai! I like living where I can drink the tap water because I really like water and I'm quite cheap.

  • Amy18/05/2010 at 02:27

Although, isn't the whole point of desalination the removal of the salt? Maybe Nick should tell the water people their plant is broken.

  • Amy18/05/2010 at 03:07

Ah ok, everything I have read about it goes on about the whole point of it being so the water is fresh and fit for human consumption. They are building a plant here since we are stupidly droughty.

This water is a "waste" product of aluminium production. Also I'm not sure they're so hot on legal protection for the consumer.

Anyways, I really have to sleep now.

What I get annoyed with are these shows, which are kind of interesting, but drip feed you to keep you hooked. Then because they are so slow, they end up getting cancelled.

What a waste of time - FF drags on so much that I reckon you could have put the whole series into a movie. Seeing as the only other alternative are shows with corpses or reality shows, I think I'm done with TV!

I really wanted to like FF, but I gave up after 4 episodes, it just couldn't keep me hooked. Shame, the previews for it looked so good

  • RubberGoat18/05/2010 at 08:04

How I Met Your Mother is good. But there's a reason I don't watch TV outside of F1 as much as I used to.

the 5th season has lost a lot of its spark :(

I have been given a DVD of 'The Big Bang Theory' - which is quite funny (and some of the characters are very close to whom I studied with!)

But there isn't much outside of sports that I watch on TV - even with me just getting an HD box it hasn't got me interested...

  • Journeyer18/05/2010 at 08:04

about 3x as much coverage as usual, and Brabham saying someting along the lines of 'Mark is doing well, he could be champion but there is a long way to go in the season' is being given the headline "Brabham: WEBBER WILL BE CHAMPION"

    Welcome to Lewis-mania, Aussie-style. :D

All this hype makes me think Webber will throw up a stink in Turkey...

  • Journeyer18/05/2010 at 08:04

a victim of its own success? with it getting renewed for another season, they have to extend the series without really giving up too much of the main storyline...

It's just too damn slow. 58 minutes of mush and re-hashed sequences from previous episodes, 2 minutes of story and then BANG! over.

pretty much, I think they needed to do a Lost and say 'right, we will do X more seasons' and then actually start getting towards the end. I always liked Barney but he has become a complete walking parody of himself, he used to have some quite good plots but now it's just "heh, I like suits and women, I will now make a "witty" one liner about one of these two things"

True about Barney to a certain extent, but the subtle hints I'm seeing are telling me I shouldn't give up on his character juuuust yet.

The plot does proceed at snail's pace. In fact, just by reading online synopsis, you can actually have a better picture of what is going on then watching the episodes slowly crawl pass.

But I love watching Jack and Dom act. :P

It's a standard PR line. They'll only confirm it once it's filed at the FIA. To be honest, I don't see why they shouldn't appeal. Michael's ended up with no points from Monaco, anyway. Not like there's much else he could lose...

My biggest issue with FF is this idea that everyone seems to have seen something they don't like, yet feel powerless to avoid it and drift towards it like they can't change fate?

Australia is the same as the US, just with the US shows. If things don't rate the first week they will move it to 2am the second or cancel it all together. They don't give anything a chance because the ratings are too important to them.

The only one I think they actually had at all was the West Wing which was always set to run for 7 seasons (two terms of presidency... Well 8 years is two terms but the show started at the end of the first year of the presidency).

The reason ratings are so important to them is revenue. I just learned last week that the rates networks charge for advertising is directly tied to the ratings of their shows. The stronger the ratings are, the better position they have to charge more...

Seems like the interesting shows don't get popular, so they move them to the insomniac hour so they can cancel them later. Sadly, TV shows are too much about the money they make these days.

BBC still make a lot of money from selling TV Shows overseas. On Danish TV on Saturday they had the segment from the Winter Olympics where the silly Skiing commentator man tried out the Skeleton. It was packaged as a half hour programme. Then there's Doctor Who, Top Gear Etc...

apologies for going back to it again but that sounds incredible similar to how they treated Arrested Development. They bought the rights to it after beating off Channel 4 or Sky, then put one Episode at about 9pmish one evening with no advertising whatsoever then pushed it later the next week then about 2am the week later in double bill episodes to get it out the way, then it was never seen again on the BBC a few weeks later. Really upsets me to know they do that though because it really is a fabulous show...

They've done it with other shows too but they have survived. Family Guy and American Dad were both pushed into the graveyard slots before BBC3 was introduced and then became big parts of the BBC3 evening line up.

To be fair, the only driver of recent times who's stated that he wants to stay where he is for the long-term is Lewis. It's almost impossible NOT to be interested in Ferrari.

And I disagree with Steven - I think he wants Kubica there rather than Massa. They're good friends, they have similar driving styles (so it's easier to share data that makes sense), and I think Alonso is confident enough that he can beat Kubica.

  • Alianora La Canta18/05/2010 at 09:25

    The perfect teammate for Alonso I'd say would be Kimi. Kimi doesn't care and is very nonchalant. He only cares about himself, doesn't bother himself with the team or teammate. {Comment #31}

Ferrari needed someone who does care about the team and not just himself. Lack of mutual understanding was impairing the speed of both team and driver.

The court fee? Especially since the most probable outcome is for the appeal to be declared inadmissible because otherwise the entire appeals process will have to be rewritten to codify how appeals of this kind will be dealt with.

  • Alianora La Canta18/05/2010 at 09:40

    You need to file the appeal within 48 hours. I say that they are cutting it really close. {Comment #124}

The FIA is not obliged to declare that an appeal is filed in that time limit, so if Mercedes are waiting for the FIA to tell the world we may be waiting a while.

  • Journeyer18/05/2010 at 09:45

The court fee? Especially since the most probable outcome is for the appeal to be declared inadmissible because otherwise the entire appeals process will have to be rewritten to codify how appeals of this kind will be dealt with.

Perhaps, but I don't think that's expensive enough for it to be a reason for them not to file it, surely?

  • Journeyer18/05/2010 at 09:46

The FIA is not obliged to declare that an appeal is filed in that time limit, so if Mercedes are waiting for the FIA to tell the world we may be waiting a while.

Why would Mercedes wait for the FIA, though?

  • Alianora La Canta18/05/2010 at 09:51

    Not sure if this has been posted, but here's Damon Hill's thoughts on the reaction to Schumi's penalty. {Comment #163}

I can partly see where Damon is coming from there. Although ex-drivers have a role to play in explaining to stewards how racers react to particular events on the circuit and maybe remind them of how particular incidents were handled in their day, the trained and experienced stewards should be the ones to decide on points of law. If ex-drivers are being expected to know the points of law as well, they need to be trained accordingly and judging from Damon's comments that hasn't happened.

    It's an unfortunate coincidence.

The FIA is not obliged to declare that an appeal is filed in that time limit, so if Mercedes are waiting for the FIA to tell the world we may be waiting a while.

F1GPupdate has an article on the Schumi Alo thing, here is their take on the appeal:

However, the Brackley team is able to protest only the stewards' decision (as green flags had been waving), as opposed to the penalty itself, meaning that the punishment will not be lifted even if the team does win the appeal.

  • Journeyer18/05/2010 at 09:58

However, the Brackley team is able to protest only the stewards' decision (as green flags had been waving), as opposed to the penalty itself, meaning that the punishment will not be lifted even if the team does win the appeal.

But the way I see it, if the decision is overturned, doesn't that effectively nullify the penalty, because the decision that caused said penalty has effectively been voided?

  • Alianora La Canta18/05/2010 at 10:05

    Perhaps, but I don't think that's expensive enough for it to be a reason for them not to file it, surely? {Comment #189}

It is if there's almost certainly going to be no benefit whatsoever. After all, if the appeal is declared inadmissible, the FIA has no incentive to tidy up the regulations in that area.

  • Alianora La Canta18/05/2010 at 10:06

that would probably be what logic says, but remember, the rules are written by FIA ...

    But the way I see it, if the decision is overturned, doesn't that effectively nullify the penalty, because the decision that caused said penalty has effectively been voided? {Comment #194}

I think it would have to. Absent a reason for the penalty, it is liable to challenge in a court of law. Mercedes might not bother for something this small but another team might in a future situation, so the FIA has to defend against that possibility.

i read it as: "we're not starting in bahrain ever again"

  • Journeyer18/05/2010 at 14:00

not necessarily. in any case, they may be basing this on the fact that lewis' appeal from spa 08 was deemed inadmissible last time round, regardless of what case they had.

but going back, very disappointing that they decided to drop the appeal. i do wonder though when Alonso's luck will run out... he's managed to come out of every controversy he's been involved in on the winning/not-losing side. it's amazing, really.

  • me18/05/2010 at 14:00

but going back, very disappointing that they decided to drop the appeal. i do wonder though when Alonso's luck will run out... he's managed to come out of every controversy he's been involved in on the winning/not-losing side. it's amazing, really.

but he was in the right here.

  • Journeyer18/05/2010 at 14:01

i read it as: "we're not starting in bahrain ever again"

i read it as: "there better be a USGP next year."

and for the record, i think we're still starting in bahrain next year.

  • Journeyer18/05/2010 at 14:02

but he was in the right here.

personally, i don't think so. but there ya go.

  • me18/05/2010 at 14:02

i read it as: "there better be a USGP next year."

not going to happen. bernie wants to much money and the US doesn't need f1.

and for the record, i think we're still starting in bahrain next year.

really? after all the "f1 is boring" press?

  • Pat W18/05/2010 at 14:02

i read it as: "there better be a USGP next year."

So did I. There won't be one though.

  • me18/05/2010 at 14:02

personally, i don't think so. but there ya go.

c'mon, if there was a sliver of a chance of victory, brawn would've taken it. he convinces people black is white.

  • Alison18/05/2010 at 14:03

but going back, very disappointing that they decided to drop the appeal. i do wonder though when Alonso's luck will run out... he's managed to come out of every controversy he's been involved in on the winning/not-losing side. it's amazing, really.

It would have been unfair to take back the penalty though. Alonso did nothing wrong so why should he lose a position and the associated points?

The problem in my eyes is a disproportionate punishment to the crime especially considering how unclear the regulations appeared originally.

  • Jon Waldock18/05/2010 at 14:03

but he was in the right here.

personally, i don't think so. but there ya go.

I dont think he was in the right or in the wrong, unlike most of the other controversies he's been in, he had nothing to do with it and so the worst that could happen is he loose a place and that wouldnt have been a big deal

  • Pat W18/05/2010 at 14:03

really? after all the "f1 is boring" press?

They'll change it back to the other layout

  • me18/05/2010 at 14:04

really? after all the "f1 is boring" press?

They'll change it back to the other layout

it'll still be boring. it's a flat race in a desert.

i don't think the layout had much to do with it.

  • Journeyer18/05/2010 at 14:04

not going to happen. bernie wants to much money and the US doesn't need f1.

i'm not saying it will happen, i'm just saying the teams want it. what else can you pair up with Canada?

really? after all the "f1 is boring" press?

yup. partly because i think bahrain wants it more than australia does. and partly because amy will almost certainly have to pay extra for her flights if bahrain is moved back to its original position.

  • Journeyer18/05/2010 at 14:05

i don't think the layout had much to do with it.

i think it had a lot to do with it. the old layout produced decent racing. nothing stellar, but decent. the new layout, though, was just unwatchable.

  • Journeyer18/05/2010 at 14:05

yup. partly because i think bahrain wants it more than australia does. and partly because amy will almost certainly have to pay extra for her flights if bahrain is moved back to its original position.

not enough to warrant an opening place on the calendar.

  • me18/05/2010 at 14:06

i'm not saying it will happen, i'm just saying the teams want it. what else can you pair up with Canada?

    two races in canada?

    yay!

yup. partly because i think bahrain wants it more than australia does. and partly because amy will almost certainly have to pay extra for her flights if bahrain is moved back to its original position.

    oops!

  • Journeyer18/05/2010 at 14:07

not enough to warrant an opening place on the calendar.

true. but i still think the reason bernie's more inclined to give it to them is TV ratings - more people can watch a Bahrain season-opener than an Australian season-opener.

  • Pat W18/05/2010 at 14:07

i don't think the layout had much to do with it.

It used to be mediocre, now it is dire. Track's fault.

  • me18/05/2010 at 14:07

true. but i still think the reason bernie's more inclined to give it to them is TV ratings - more people can watch a Bahrain season-opener than an Australian season-opener.

the logistics of it are ludicrous. i don't think he'll be able to swing it again. i bet it costs him more in freight too.

  • Alison18/05/2010 at 14:08

true. but i still think the reason bernie's more inclined to give it to them is TV ratings - more people can watch a Bahrain season-opener than an Australian season-opener.

And then never watch another race again because it sucked?

  • Journeyer18/05/2010 at 14:08

    two races in canada?

possible (Montreal is only the 3rd Canadian GP venue), but unlikely.

  • me18/05/2010 at 14:08

It used to be mediocre, now it is dire. Track's fault.

the regulations inhibit decent racing on any track.

  • me18/05/2010 at 14:08

And then never watch another race again because it sucked?

    true.

  • Journeyer18/05/2010 at 14:09

the logistics of it are ludicrous. i don't think he'll be able to swing it again. i bet it costs him more in freight too.

it's already the 2nd time he did it.

and it actually produces freight savings for some. some F1 folks left their freight stuff in Abu Dhabi after the last race of 2009. so it's only a few hours drive up the road to Bahrain for the first race of 2010. i know the Kangaroo people did it. some of the FOM people too.

  • Journeyer18/05/2010 at 14:10

And then never watch another race again because it sucked?

but then how many casual fans would get up at 6 AM to watch F1?

  • me18/05/2010 at 14:11

the carry over must be tiny. plus you need more gap between two races in the same region than 3 months of off-season.

  • me18/05/2010 at 14:11

but then how many casual fans would get up at 6 AM to watch F1?

    replay. 1pm

They'd have stood a better chance on the old one

  • Journeyer18/05/2010 at 14:12

but i do get your point on the carryover.

  • me18/05/2010 at 14:13

They'd have stood a better chance on the old one

i just don't believe it. i know the new one wasn't better. i think the outcome would've been almost exactly the same though.

it's more than that. if you do aus > mal > china > bah > spain

which to my mind is logistically the most efficient.

the logistics of it are ludicrous. i don't think he'll be able to swing it again. i bet it costs him more in freight too.

It makes sense to me in terms of a stop on the way out to Australia. I'm sure it helped the new teams a lot too, being nearer, they could fly stuff out last-minute.

  • me18/05/2010 at 14:20

Bernie must be as good at geography as I am.

hehe. the whole calendar is a hopeless mess. where is he fitting india in? that should be part of the early flyaways.

It makes sense to me in terms of a stop on the way out to Australia. I'm sure it helped the new teams a lot too, being nearer, they could fly stuff out last-minute.

it doesn't, because it takes time to get stuff over to australia. enough time for people to go home. so it's not a stop over. it's a go to and then go back home.

start at the furthest point, fly everyone out there and get back as fast as possible.

  • Lukeh18/05/2010 at 14:21

India will fit in excellently between canada and britain to allow easy access between each race and cause general mayhem for bernie to act like nothing is wrong

  • Pat W18/05/2010 at 14:22

i just don't believe it. i know the new one wasn't better. i think the outcome would've been almost exactly the same though.

true enough.. the one wasn't the worst though

I said on a voicemail before that bahrain will forever only be remembered by me because of that giant tower it has. Everything else about bahrain is just incredibly unremarkable. Such a dull circuit no matter the configuration

I've seen some good GP2 races on it. I've also seen some bad ones.

Just no atmosphere comes through the screen, no sense of the place. Get Jealous Alex did a better job in a few blog posts than six years of F1.

This incident is making lots of people emotional. Autosport Forums initially closed a thread about it, then had to re-open it when they got hundreds of comments on the general Monaco thread.

    Afternoon all.

I started writing a blog entry about the whole Schumacher-safety car thing yesterday but decided not to bother with it. Mrs C and I are off to stay with her sister in France for a few days, and since I'll be sans laptop I wouldn't be in a position to deal with the flood of comments that would no doubt ensue!

Apple Store said £129+VAT to replace the HD on a like-for-like basis. I said nuts to that – get one twice the size from Amazon for £40 and fit it myself.

  • Journeyer18/05/2010 at 16:09

If you can summarize it in a sentence, you can post it here. Just curious what you think of it.

  • Stuart C18/05/2010 at 16:16

If you can summarize it in a sentence, you can post it here. Just curious what you think of it.

I heaped scorn on the theory that Damon was getting his own back for Adelaide '94 – bunking Michael from sixth to 12th was hardly a proportionate righting of the wrong, was it? My main thrust was suggesting – since every team has at least one savant on the pitwall who knows the Sporting Regs backwards – that Ross Brawn knew there was a grey area and was exploring what he could get away with (after all, on Sunday this was about a battle for sixth place – but one day it could be about a win).

  • Stuart C18/05/2010 at 16:16

    I know – two sentences.

A very, very good point. And let's face it - would Nico be the guy exploring those grey areas? Not in a million years. ;)

  • Journeyer18/05/2010 at 16:21

    I know – two sentences.

But still packed with a ton of insight. :)

The third event took place in Monaco on Friday, onboard one of Tony Hewitt’s Monacokool yachts, which was moored near the chicane. It was rather more exclusive (read expensive!) than previous Audiences, with former F1 winner Johnny Herbert joining in the fun, along with photographer Keith Sutton, who popped by with some of his models and regaled the party with takes of some of his photographic exploits, plus an unexpected drop-ins from F1 Race Director Charlie Whiting and his assistant Herbie Blash.

    IRL:

Meanwhile, Dixon's on top with 226.5 mph - I heard Castroneves managed a lap of 227.5 yesterday. Still a million miles away from Gil de Ferran's four-lap average at Fontana in 2000...

Thankfully not near the Fontana mark, assuming you mean his 240mph CART lap.. I miss those cars but it was getting silly

241.2 mph over four laps - completely crazy, especially when you consider what happened at texas in 2001

Mexico. Yes, it's less attractive than the USA, but it wasn't a million miles off joining the calender in 2006...

  • Alianora La Canta18/05/2010 at 21:09

    true. but i still think the reason bernie's more inclined to give it to them is TV ratings - more people can watch a Bahrain season-opener than an Australian season-opener. {Comment #366}

How's this for an answer? Make the Aragon circuit the season-opener in the first week of March (it can replace Valencia as the European Grand Prix and it certainly looks more exciting), then move to Bahrain and Australia at their current dates.

  • Alianora La Canta18/05/2010 at 21:11

    but then how many casual fans would get up at 6 AM to watch F1? {Comment #374}

They wait until 2pm and watch the replay (assuming the TV station does a replay), get hooked and start looking for it in the TV listings even if subsequent timings prove obscure...

    how does that help?

  • Alianora La Canta18/05/2010 at 21:40

    I started writing a blog entry about the whole Schumacher-safety car thing yesterday but decided not to bother with it. Mrs C and I are off to stay with her sister in France for a few days, and since I'll be sans laptop I wouldn't be in a position to deal with the flood of comments that would no doubt ensue! {Comment #436}

That's probably a good move. My entry on the subject may have attracted precisely no comments*, but I suspect someone with as experienced and reasoned a viewpoint as you might get quite a lot of interest, and not everyone thinks straight when they type...

    * - Having just had to clear 55 spam comments from another entry, not needing to remove any abusive ones was welcome. Sometimes people come up with interesting additions or oppositions though, just not on this occasion.

  • Alianora La Canta18/05/2010 at 21:42

    how does that help?

More interesting opener at a good timeslot, no inconvenience to people who have already booked travel arrangements or municipal planning authorities, Aragon and Bahrain can go back-to-back, a good excuse to get rid of Valencia and also the opener is really easy to reach from testing because it's in the same country!

  • me18/05/2010 at 21:44

    that much i agree with.

    can't argue with that.

you haven't however solved the problem that is - it takes longer to get "stuff" to melbourne than it does people. hence people going to bahrain, then coming home while the "stuff" gets to australia.

  • Alianora La Canta18/05/2010 at 21:44

    I know – two sentences. {Comment #439}

But two main points. The first one I completely agree with and the seconds puts an interesting light on the situation (I thought Ross had simply been misled by a badly-signposted article, but if he was testing for holes in the rulebook it would be typically canny of him ;) )

  • Alianora La Canta18/05/2010 at 21:59

That problem will exist no matter what is done because it takes about a month to get the sea stuff over to Australia. Particularly, any calender which pairs Melbourne with any other race back-to-back will require cargo to be split in two.

ecclestone is clearly a mentalist with the current calendar. it completely ludicrous no matter how you slice it. the only thing that makes sense is bahrain and abu dhabi line his pockets significantly more than others.

of course it must. via malaysia > china > japan > india > bahrain. as i suggested earlier.

it doesn't have to come directly back to the uk?

Luckily once I figured out there were no links into the page other than the ones I'd generated myself, there proved to be a straightforward solution - I swapped out the pages. The inbound links don't work for it but it meant 660 spam messages went in 30 seconds flat and the entry content itself is still on the site in the correct point of the calender. As manual clearance techniques go, that's not bad.

  • Alianora La Canta18/05/2010 at 22:30

Bahrain to Malaysia is 3 weeks. Australia to Malaysia is at least 2 weeks and may well be 3. Any less and they wouldn't need two boats for all combinations of Bahrain/Malaysia/Australia and from what I've understood of the logistics articles in F1 Racing and the like.

If we had to wait for it to come back to the UK, the gap between races would have to be 4 weeks even if the starting point was Bahrain, so your question is good. Unfortunately leaving the boat out in the Indian Ocean still leaves long gaps between races; if you're trying to synchronise goods and people, that's not good.

  • me18/05/2010 at 22:31

i know this. that isn't under debate is it? the argument is the current calendar is very inefficient. and that starting in bahrain is a silly idea.
