Well, well, well. You wait ages for a good controversy and then bang, is there anything that Monaco can not do? And that race had everything, overtaking, massive shunts and people falling in the water. As usual, I've updated my New Teams Championship (its getting close), Leigh has his massively indepth review. At the time of writing Lukeh hasn't done his review, but I'm sure it will be up soon. Onto the bulletpoints:

  • Everyone's favourite Franck Montagny was in action yesterday and achieved a brilliant result (I'd just like to point out now not as brilliant as Craig Dolby for Spurs...). As you could probably expect, Mrs C has blogged all about the race in Assen.
  • It was the return of Giggles Radio yesterday! And the brilliant Alex Andronov had his 'O' themed show. Some surprise selections, but I'm sure you will enjoy the show anyways.
  • I'm running out of things to say so I'll just do a bit of self-promotion. If you haven't already noticed, I've refreshed the Northern Waffler up a bit. And for the first time in a little while, I've written a new post on Triple League Racing. This time I'm discussing the applications for the new teams for the 2011 F1 season (or in reality, the two lead ones)

So that is all I have got for this week, my exam period starts properly today with 4 exams this week. Brilliant. Struggling for ideas... you bet.

Have a nice Monday

hehe, from the homepage, this time last year:

The teams have seems so chirpy before this saga, and now with this budgie cap, they're just being stopped from spreading their wings of creativity.

    mike doodson, gp+

Indeed, so comprehensive is the Beeb’s F1 coverage that it might surprise you to know just how many supposedly hands-on British pressmen have been relying on it for their coverage of this year’s first four GPs. It doesn’t stop them from writing authoritative missives about the scene, of course. It’s just that they forget to put in a dateline.

no names mentioned, who's he getting at?

i know i wasn't paying attention on saturday, but blimey:

Button’s efforts were not helped when he discovered that he had a TV remote control in the cockpit with him, and solved the problem by lobbing the device out at Rascasse (above), rather than losing time in the pits.

awful weekend for that side of the garage!

what's worrying is the pic shows the batteries had fallen out before he threw it away. that could mess with your brake pedal.

Seb is going to beat Mark some times, and Mark is going to beat Seb some times. It is a pretty even battle - that is what makes it so exciting, and what makes Mark Webber fans so happy - the two drivers are close, not poles apart as many continue to suggest.

And that's the interesting bit. Many of us expected this year that:

    1. Michael would soundly beat Nico

    2. Lewis would soundly beat Jenson

    3. Seb would soundly beat Mark

None of that has happened. It's pretty surprising.

    What happened to the open Stewarding process? Wheres the explanation of decisions etc. I'm watching the Forum and everyone says Schumacher should keep the position, so I want to know why Damon disagrees {Comment #77}

The stewards have given an explanation (PDF), albeit a short one. Then again, the way the regulations are written, Article 40.13 leaves no scope for dispute. The reason half the viewers don't realise this is because Article 40.7 reads as if it should cover all scenarios but doesn't.

We're still waiting the Australian GP 2009 full stewards' report, so I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for yesterday's. The technical report is also late, which is annoying because I want to update my engine and gearbox records.

It's a universal thing, I think, not just in F1. I'm tempted to say that it's a general characteristic of social media. No matter the subject, there will always be haters.

That's true, and the fact green flags were waving didn't help.

    I don't see why the rule is different anyway. {Comment #135}

The green flags are effectively mandated by Article 40.13 (though they weren't used in the instances in 2009 where the relevant article was triggered), which is even less helpful (they need an intermediate flag between yellow and green to properly express the 40.13 situation and it doesn't exist).

I agree that the differential rule is a bit silly - personally I'd start the racing at the start/finish line in all cases, not just the final lap, simply because the way the timing systems work make it easy-peasy for viewers and stewards alike to see if the rule is kept.

I posted this on Joe's blog, doubt it will ever get published so here goes:

Ironically the issue here has little to do with Schumacher and more to do with the rules and their interpretations. I am no fan of Schumacher, but I can see what he tried to do here and in a way it was very clever. Yet again F1 implements a rule which is ambiguous and asinine, probably just to add some controversy so we keep talking about the race long after it finishes.

I do wish the FIA would do things in a simpler way – why bother bringing the safety car in like they did and cause all of this confusion when they could just have finished it under a yellow flag? If they forbid overtaking, it’s crazy to drop a green flag like that.

  • Journeyer17/05/2010 at 11:10

Even Andrew Benson is copping a load of flak (mostly about Alonso): http://www.bbc...ching_in_reargua.html

To be fair, I think Benson may have gone a touch too far to say that Alonso is better than Schumacher was (even if it's from some anonymous guy in Ferrari). The Ferrari Alonso joined is waaay better than the Ferrari Schumacher joined. And that is thanks to Schumacher and the people he brought in.

  • Journeyer17/05/2010 at 11:11

    But unless it states that it doesn't cover all scenarios, doesn't it cover all scenarios by default? {Comment #137}

The regulations are designed to be read together, so a regulation only covers those scenarios where a more specific regulation doesn't counteract them. Better signposting would resolve this - for example, the FIA could have written, "Article 40.7: Except under Article 40.13 below..." and it would have saved much argumentation and confusion. It may even have saved the incident from happening in the first place because I believe Ross was as confused about the whole thing as the rest of us initially were!

And that's the thing: usually, they do signposting. I read the article on penalties, and they clearly indicated which applied when.

So why didn't that happen here?

  • Alison17/05/2010 at 11:14

I've not followed comments over the weekend so maybe this is a daft suggestion, but is there no way they could have recognised the move as an honest mistake and just reverse the positions back?

  • Journeyer17/05/2010 at 11:15

Alia, since you're here, if Mercedes appeal the decision, what can happen? Also, if Mercedes can get the decision overturned, would that effectively nullify the penalty? It's technically unappealable, but if the underlying decision is nullified, isn't the penalty nullified too?

Rules say no, according to those in the know. They have to use the available punishments (i.e. drive-through (or +20s), stop-go (or +30s), or exclusion).

I feel lucky. The only times I've had commenters say nasty things to me on my blog, they've responded well to the counter-commenting technique (admittedly I tend to counter-attack their argument rather than their general approach, but still...) It's just a pity spammers don't stop spamming on request because that's my other big problem, apart from struggling to write content in the first place.

I didn't mean today. I think some rubbish about Rosberg having low fuel so he was speeding. Everyone accepted he'd broken the rules but no penalty was imposed as they accepted it was just an accidental breech even though he gained positions through it.

  • Alianora La Canta17/05/2010 at 11:19

    I've not followed comments over the weekend so maybe this is a daft suggestion, but is there no way they could have recognised the move as an honest mistake and just reverse the positions back? {Comment #148}

No. Article 16 of the Sporting Regulations specifies what can be done about an incident and swapping positions back is not included. If the application of the rule had been messed up the incident could simply have been ignored (the precedent being Jarno Trulli's exclusion from the 2001 US GP being rescinded due to one of the supposed signatories being on a plane home at the time the penalty was issued).

Someone at F1 Fanatic suggested an alternative though - drop Michael Schumacher any number of grid positions and make "any number" one (i.e. the number of positions gained through the mistake).

  • Journeyer17/05/2010 at 11:23

I'd go the other way though. One of the best chances for an overtake is on a restart but the nature of most circuits is that the start line is so far along the main straight, it is too late to make a manouvre afterwards, and cars even have to back off to avoid passing. That's counter-intuitive, I'm in favour of rules that encourage racing and the SC1 line (restart line) does that, they can pass on the front straight in front of the crowds..

  • Journeyer17/05/2010 at 11:23

    Suzuka 09

I remember being very angry he wasn't penalised at the time. If anything could be dangerous, speeding past an accident has to be it.... Point being, surely the marshals can do more or less whatever they like....

  • Alianora La Canta17/05/2010 at 11:26

If Mercedes appeal the decision, the following are possible:

    1) Most likely, the appeal ruled inadmissable due to no differentiation between process and result being made in any element of FIA documentation. Case over in an hour flat, maybe less. Penalty stays as is and cost of case billed to Mercedes. However, an increase of penalty is unlikely due to this being an untested part of FIA appeals policy.

    2) Mercedes could win on the basis of Article 40.7 implying it covers all scenarios without actually doing so. This would probably take all day. Original positions restored, penalty 100% nullified, bill for case sent to the FIA, Todt has egg on face and summons WMSC and equivalent groups in other series for an emergency regulation re-write (the implications on all forms of motorsport could be significant and some discussion would be needed to figure out exactly what wording should be used to convey the new realities).

    3) Least likely in my view, Mercedes' appeal is ruled admissible but fails because Article 40.13 brooks no argument. Penalty sticks and possibly increased (though given that there was genuine confusion, any increase will be small), fee for case sent to Mercedes and Todt summons WMSC and equivalent groups in other series for emergency regulation re-write.

  • me17/05/2010 at 11:27

I wondered that too. To me, a fair punishment is to say "Well, driver A should not have overtaken driver B and therefore the order should be reversed".

It's not fair that 25 seconds were added because the field was bunched up under a safety car. He's penalised as if the race was running.

That was because he had no way of knowing that he'd broken the rules until it was too late. Perhaps Williams should have had a penalty but it would have been unfair to give Nico one... ...and Article 16 includes no provision that penalises only the team for such an incident. If there'd been a clause in the Technical Regulations forbidding overrides of ECU messages, it would have been another matter, but at the time no such clause existed. This has since been fixed.

Indeed. He was six seconds faster on one lap, and his pitstop ended up being slightly less than six seconds slower than Heidfeld, so he 'jumped' him.

When were the 2010 rules released? Given Todt came in pretty late, I don't think this one can be blamed on him as much...

  • Journeyer17/05/2010 at 11:40

But I don't remember this incident with Rosberg, to be honest.

Suzuka 09I remember being very angry he wasn't penalised at the time. If anything could be dangerous, speeding past an accident has to be it.... Point being, surely the marshals can do more or less whatever they like....

I proved he gained an advantage. It was as translucent as the male reproductive organs on a canine. Yet the FIA chose not to penalise him as it would have given Brawn the WCC...

Oh THAT! Yeah, I remember that now.

The latest version came out on 11 February this year. He shouldn't get the blame for this situation (the regulations in question pre-date his arrival in office and until yesterday nobody realised this problem could happen), but he would have to clean up the ensuing mess because he is the only one with the necessary authority to co-ordinate the rewrites across all the FIA series. This policy could potentially open up new appeal avenues for everyone, not just F1.

Things like the team releasing a driver in an unsafe manner after a pitstop - you could argue that the driver may not see the other car and the team should have looked out for the oncoming car better.

It may be a bad example, but there have been cases where it's the team that should have been punished but not the driver, or the other way around...

I have a question about Alonso.

What lap did he pit on? Because if the safety car came out on the first lap, then surely if he pitted after the first lap that he didn't do a full racing lap on the option tyres?

He pitted on the 2nd lap. Only after the team double checked that the SC was really coming on. I don't think he will be penalized since he was probably far back enough to join the SC after he completed 1 full lap.

    hi everyone,

    what goes on?

  • Marilene Riddle17/05/2010 at 12:48

Brawn and Schumacher argued that at this point green flags were displayed, meaning they were able to race.

But the rule-makers would say that is the case every time the safety car pulls in. The reason for it is to let all the drivers know, wherever they are on the track, that the safety car has pulled in. But they are still not allowed to overtake until the specified point - which on the last lap means not at all.

This interpretation was shared by all the team managers bar that of Mercedes - I understand that upon seeing Schumacher's move every single one of them got in touch with race director Charlie Whiting to say it was not allowed.

    From Andrew Benson's BBC blog.

Every single one of the other team principals? Looks like Schumi is hated = fact.

    Interesting you can say an hour flat, when Lewis' case took all day to achieve the same result. Or half a day at least. {Comment #179}

That was back in the Mosley era with McLaren as the opposing party and Ferrari as their primary rival for the title. Max had to fit in a massive whinge against McLaren for having the temerity to make the slightest objection to the munificence of the Federation's procedures and for defending themselves against an action that may reasonably have been perceived as pro-Ferrari.

Jean is much more efficient and will probably concentrate on the facts of the case. Of which there are not many that need to be considered.

    That's true. Not all series would be affected though. Have you ever seen a WRC Safety Car? :D {Comment #184}

The Safety Car rules are the easy bit to re-write. If Mercedes' appeal works, then that's a new avenue of protest that needs to be codified - and every single series the FIA governs will need an appropriate codification that is both reasonably consistent with other FIA implementations and adapted correctly to the needs of the individual series. It's the appeals procedure that'll need the most re-writing.

That's because unsafe releases (and about 90% of the other things for which the FIA issues penalties in F1) are subject to the Sporting Regulations, not the Technical Regulations. Only in the case of technical regulations breaches is Article 16 of the Sporting Regulations ignored. It may not make sense, but that's the FIA for you.

If you had "mark", "webber" and "cheating" in the same blog entry (summary of the race, perhaps?), then that would be sufficient for a search engine to reveal your blog when a search was done on those terms. This strikes me as an example of the system not working properly.

My guess is whoever was searching for that wants someone other than Mark to win either the race or the championship. A bit like when Coulthard was stuck behind Bernoldi in 2001 and was attempting to think up ways of getting disqualified. Apparently the best he could come up with was a dodgy haircut and really bad dress sense...

He pitted on lap 2 (which was the first opportunity he had). It doesn't say in the regulations that one must do a whole lap (racing or otherwise) on a compound, only that both compounds must be used in the race. It was a clever move on Fernando's part. In theory you could do one metre on a compound and then swap to the other, but then the driver would effectively have to bring the set of wheels with them and do their own tyre change to stay in the regulations...

    air travel is changing:

Funny. Five minutes ago @tripit reported my flight is delayed. Crew walked by me saying they should tell everyone because we know anyway.

i don't understand what benefit there is from pretending a flight isn't delayed? it's not like passengers will never find out.

Brought to you from NASA's you couldn't make it up department.

The first spacewalk is still underway but was held up for a while because the main computer system decided for no apparent reason. They told the spacewalkers to just hang around out there for half an hour-ish as the robotic arm went to safe mode amongst other problems.

Looks like the ISS had a blue screen of death to me which is not what you want with two people on limited air supply hanging around outside.

    Afternoon all.

Beastly day. This morning I connected the hateful BlackBerry Storm to my MacBook to update the BB software. Got bored waiting and relocated the MacBook from my lap to the coffee table so that I could fetch breakfast. This is a computer that has been all around Europe over the past 18 months in planes, trains and automobiles; why, then, should the process of gently setting it down on a table cause the hard drive to pack in?

And, since the BB was half way through its update, it is also kaput. To pile ghastliness upon beastliness, Vodafone have scaled back their support for this hideous device. Last time it broke, they couriered a replacement the next day – this time I had to cart it to a shop and hand it over for a minimum of three weeks, with no replacement.

So: dead MacBook, and a SIM card in an envelope. What else can go wrong today?

  • Christine17/05/2010 at 14:57

Booked in for tomorrow morning. No doubt they'll want to spirit it away to be 'repaired' – when actually all they'll do is junk the old HD and fit a new one. And charge an arm and a leg for the privilege.

Working on the assumption that the HD is unrecoverable (rats! its got all the photos for the second booky wook on it!), the easiest and cheapest route is to order a new one from Amazon and fit it myself – all you have to do is open the back and undo five screws. Simples.

'I started my race at the iconic Lowes Hairpin (yes I know it`s not called that anymore and I don`t care) then into the tunnel, before catching the action at the Nouvell Chicane, I walked back past the gin palaces and stopped briefly at the swimming pool chicane and then positioned myself in time for a front row seat at the podium presentation.'

He's now made it to Porto and there are no travel links, they've stopped for the day. It is a two hour drive each way and this is the last night available for the meal - does she cancel the 50th birthday meal knowing it can't be rebooked (not enough time before they come back), or does she abandon Dave and leave him to find a hotel?

Have been speaking to a graduate opportunity scheme today about signing up for a placement from September but it'd be like paid experience so we shall see if that leads to anything because it's limited places. Still looking for alternatives though, more so this week now that assignment is over I have more like to look!

To be fair we've addressed that in the report we handed in. We just ran out of time to fix it when we had lots of other things to do.

Oh no, it's not teaching related. I'd need to get more experience asides from the few weeks I have from previous experience. It's more general graduate opportunities but I'm definitely looking to go back into a PGCE related course eventually. Still consider myself bit too young for teaching but I've had lots of very useful and helpful teaching graduate schemes keep in contact and give advice regarding that. I'm just happy to get general experience before trying that.

Ah okay. If it's not directly to do with what you're wanting to do with your life, and won't necessarily lead to a job, I'd be very wary about taking unpaid placements. Money sadly is important. Surely you want to give that supermarket the boot?

OK, first bird is a bomb, drop it on the strut to the left. That should clear the blocks down to the same level as the rock.

Second bird is 3 birds - aim at the blocks and divide as close to impact as you can.

Third bird is turbo boost one, this has to go into the remaining bricks and release the stone block onto the pig's head.

i heart their performer of the month:

Sebastian Vettel may not be leading the Formula 1 World Championship, but he has proven himself to be the most consistently-quick driver in the field this year

he's getting he arse kicked by a teammate no-one rates. he should get an award for underperformer of the month.

  • Alianora La Canta17/05/2010 at 20:27

    Ooooh. What are the chances that Nelson Piquet Sr. will get to be a steward then? Should Alonso have to worry? {Comment #248}

None. One of the side effects of motor racing being tight-knit is that if you offend the wrong people it's easy to be knocked out of the loop of power. I think the Piquets have managed to do that. Nelson may race again but it will never be with the level of respect afforded to his rivals, let alone with enough influence to actually get a foot into the corridors of power. His father is likely to have the "horns effect" applied to him by association even though he had no known role in the scandal that knocked the Piquets out of the loop.

I think he's going to be fine. He really hates Monaco. He was purely horrendous the last 2 years too. Roll on Turkey.

I also think it's harsh to say he's getting an arse kicking when he's co-leading the championship despite 3 mechanical failures.

  • me17/05/2010 at 20:35

mark webber couldn't beat david coulthard in the same car. he couldn't beat nick heidfeld in the same car. mark webber used to be average. either hes drastically improved. or vettel getting an arse-kicking.

the test for Webber is whether he can continue this form, last season it plummeted from about Hungary onwards until Brazil.

Everyone's allowed an off day. I agree he's not performed well recently but I think it's just a one off.

I certainly hope so. Because if not, it may well be that this car just doesn't suit him on certain circuits, and that is not good for a championship campaign where you try to get maximum points every race.

  • me17/05/2010 at 20:45

Apologies, that did happen. I've erased a lot of the last one and a half years...

the test for Webber is whether he can continue this form, last season it plummeted from about Hungary onwards until Brazil.

i doubt he can. i don't think he's improved that much. he has an awesome car and a teammate who's dropped the ball.

  • Alison17/05/2010 at 20:46

no, he screwed up and came third

I agree that he shouldn't have let Button past but that didn't hold him up. Red Bull wanted the strategies split to give a (ridiculous) chance of victory and for some reason gave Mark a favourable strategy when Seb was in front. Losing the victory was Seb's fault, getting third place really wasn't. Red Bull + strategy = DISASTER

  • me17/05/2010 at 20:48

Or the updates just suit Mark better...

    It happens...

    Look at the Merc too....

    It happens...

  • Alison17/05/2010 at 20:49

but webber didn't screw up, why shouldn't he get the favourable call?

Why didn't they both go on that strategy? How is a strategy that can't even hold 2nd place ever going to be able to take the lead?? It's insane talk.

  • me17/05/2010 at 20:49

Vettel would be ahead though if he didn't have some many car problems.

    if, if, if though.

maybe mark treats the car better?

  • Marilene Riddle17/05/2010 at 20:49

but webber didn't screw up, why shouldn't he get the favourable call?

No reason (he should get a favourable call). But that doesn't mean they didn't screw up Seb's race anyway.

  • Andy Taylor17/05/2010 at 20:50

maybe mark treats the car better?

Vettel has a better name for his though :)

  • me17/05/2010 at 20:50

no it isn't. either way after vettel's cockup, the best the team could hope for was a 2-3, which they got. not the way around you'd have liked it, but the correct way in my eyes.

  • James17/05/2010 at 20:50

maybe mark treats the car better?

i think that was suggested in spain, as Vettel has problems with brakes.

  • Lady Snowcat17/05/2010 at 20:50

maybe mark treats the car better?

    Excuse me...

I think I've just got to stop laughing...

So Lewis treated the Macca better than Heikki....

I think not... Heikki just lucked into the duff bits....

  • Marilene Riddle17/05/2010 at 20:50

Or the updates just suit Mark better...

    It happens...

    Look at the Merc too....

Merc is different. There is conspiracy there.

I want to believe that the 'Mark + Webber + cheating' search is not a sign of things to come.

  • me17/05/2010 at 20:51

No reason (he should get a favourable call). But that doesn't mean they didn't screw up Seb's race anyway.

the team came away with the same points either way. what did they loose by doing what they did? nothing.

  • me17/05/2010 at 20:51

    Excuse me...

I think I've just got to stop laughing...

    we'll wait...

the team came away with the same points either way. what did they loose by doing what they did? nothing.

I think it's unfair to mess about with people like that.

At any rate, they are shocking at strategy calls across the board imo. They'd really benefit from someone with a lot of experience at that.

  • James17/05/2010 at 20:53

Mr C, you may like to know if we were still using the old point scoring system, Vettel would actually be ahead by a couple of points.

(i know its an if ;))

  • Marilene Riddle17/05/2010 at 20:53

So Lewis treated the Macca better than Heikki....

I think not... Heikki just lucked into the duff bits....

I think this situation is more Kimi-like than Heikki-like. Retiring while leading a race? Check. :(

  • me17/05/2010 at 20:53

i think that was suggested in spain, as Vettel has problems with brakes.

is that the first time? i forget what happened in melbourne, was that a brake thing for vettel?

(i know mark forgot to use his)

  • Lady Snowcat17/05/2010 at 20:53

    we'll wait...

    Tres kind...

Poor old Seb.... he actually did the best he could in the race and jumped Kubes and came in second...

All the teams give the preferred call to the guy in front so he'd have to have had the luckiest safety car point to get the lead...

  • Steven Roy17/05/2010 at 20:54

At any rate, they are shocking at strategy calls across the board imo. They'd really benefit from someone with a lot of experience at that.

And someone who could make cars that didn't keep falling apart

What's to mess with? This is a team sport after all.

  • Lady Snowcat17/05/2010 at 20:54

    Not laughing anymore...

  • me17/05/2010 at 20:55

Poor old Seb.... he actually did the best he could in the race and jumped Kubes and came in second...

agreed. but what happened in qually? he has the fastest car, he's supposed to be the fastest driver.

  • Alison17/05/2010 at 20:55

agreed. but what happened in qually? he has the fastest car, he's supposed to be the fastest driver.

He hates Monaco. Before we even went there, I knew not to expect a lot. 2nd is a miracle!

  • Marilene Riddle17/05/2010 at 20:56

is that the first time? i forget what happened in melbourne, was that a brake thing for vettel?

I think so. Australia was "lost torque drive between the front left axle and wheel".

  • me17/05/2010 at 20:56

I think it's unfair to mess about with people like that.

    why?

guy screws up, guy looses out. that's the fairest way of playing if you ask me.

if vettel dropped it and they still gave him a favourable strategy... well that's favoritism. isn't it?

  • me17/05/2010 at 20:56

I think so. Australia was "lost torque drive between the front left axle and wheel".

canada is going to hurt then.

  • James17/05/2010 at 20:56

    are they employing Ron Dennis?

    :)

  • me17/05/2010 at 20:57

that was suggested in spain too. how comes marks wheels are always on tight?

  • Lady Snowcat17/05/2010 at 20:57

The worst call was Ross for Nico...

Left him out bottled up behind Webber on cold tyres losing time to Schuey who had yet to get caught in the Kobi train...

Nico then came in a lap behind Kobi and the others had eaten up all his benefit...

Anyone would think Ross was not on his side....

  • Marilene Riddle17/05/2010 at 20:58

    Tres dangerous ground Marilene...

    I know. *sobz*

  • Steven Roy17/05/2010 at 20:58

that was suggested in spain too. how comes marks wheels are always on tight?

No idea but equally I have no idea what a driver can do that will loosen a wheelnut.

  • Marilene Riddle17/05/2010 at 20:58

Anyone would think Ross was not on his side....

    Fact. No thinking required. :P

  • James17/05/2010 at 20:58

Anyone would think Ross was not on his side....

To be fair, Nico may have made the call.

  • me17/05/2010 at 20:58

Left him out bottled up behind Webber on cold tyres losing time to Schuey who had yet to get caught in the Kobi train...

not true, it could've gone nico's way. as it was he was going to come out behind schuey so the risk was justified.

  • Lady Snowcat17/05/2010 at 20:59

No idea but equally I have no idea what a driver can do that will loosen a wheelnut.

    Errr...

That would be get out and use a wheel gun....

  • Marilene Riddle17/05/2010 at 20:59

that was suggested in spain too. how comes marks wheels are always on tight?

Fast pit stops will do that. Others on the grid are suffering too. Maybe Mark's mechanics are better trained?

  • me17/05/2010 at 20:59

No idea but equally I have no idea what a driver can do that will loosen a wheelnut.

that's a good point. maybe it's stopping position in the pitbox or something? mark is better at judging?

  • Alison17/05/2010 at 20:59

if vettel dropped it and they still gave him a favourable strategy... well that's favoritism. isn't it?

I don't understand what you're saying, he was in front of Mark with the same amount of fuel in the car. Why shouldn't he move onto the better strategy. The strategy they were trying was idiocy from 1st and pure insanity from 2nd. It's nothing to do with team orders, you can surely determine your own strategy independently from the other driver. Why deliberately choose a slower strategy to let the other guy past? Unless you're trying to gracefully allow the drivers to swap positions for points purposes.

  • Lady Snowcat17/05/2010 at 20:59

not true, it could've gone nico's way. as it was he was going to come out behind schuey so the risk was justified.

Very true I watched Michael putting in about 4 or 5 laps faster than Nico screaming to Ross to let him come in....

  • Lady Snowcat17/05/2010 at 21:00

that's a good point. maybe it's stopping position in the pitbox or something? mark is better at judging?

    What....

Are you guys on something here?....

  • Steven Roy17/05/2010 at 21:00

Fast pit stops will do that. Others on the grid are suffering too. Maybe Mark's mechanics are better trained?

    Same mechanics for bothe drivers

  • Marilene Riddle17/05/2010 at 21:00

No idea but equally I have no idea what a driver can do that will loosen a wheelnut.

    Errr...

That would be get out and use a wheel gun....

I vote for drivers doing their own wheel change next year. Then we can get rid of pit stop strategy completely! (and drivers can only blame themselves). ;)

  • James17/05/2010 at 21:00

Fast pit stops will do that. Others on the grid are suffering too. Maybe Mark's mechanics are better trained?

    same mechanics??

maybe Vettel is just really unlucky.

  • Steven Roy17/05/2010 at 21:00

    Still shouldn't make any difference

  • me17/05/2010 at 21:01

Why deliberately choose a slower strategy to let the other guy past? Unless you're trying to gracefully allow the drivers to swap positions for points purposes.

vettel didn't have the same fuel on board surely? i can't remember it that well, but he was on a strategy that assumed he would be leading the race.

he screwed that up at turn 3(?)

  • me17/05/2010 at 21:01

maybe Vettel is just really unlucky.

They were both going to 3 stop (mad!) which might have worked from the lead I guess. Mark's engineers swapped him to a 2 stop and Vettel had to continue on the 3 stop strategy which is going to put you behind your teammate especially if you're not allowed to challenge him on your fresher tyres.

  • Alianora La Canta17/05/2010 at 21:02

use a dense cake batter and pour the different layers carefully. Eggless batters or a brownie batter (made blondie) are best.

And if you feed some to Mark just before the race Seb may just do better ....

    not to share!

  • Pat W17/05/2010 at 21:48

The worst cola I had was the new Pepsi one in the cardboard box, hardly any sugar at all. Horrible stuff. Cola needs sugar.

Now virgin.... That really is sickly sweet

Has been a long time since I had it, last recollection is I like it.. but that was when I liked Pepsi more than Coke and I've gone the other way (I do this)

  • Pat W17/05/2010 at 21:48

This is probably the point where I should admit to having different salts for different flavours, and to the single plantation chocolate in the cupboards.....

but then we're not really a calpol using household. My parentsbelieved in tepid baths for tempretures.

  • Alison17/05/2010 at 22:20

You broke your shiny phone? Maybe that's why they sent you two in the first place

Stupidly I have to send back 2nd one and wait for new one which is coming tomorrow. The world is mad....

  • Steven Roy17/05/2010 at 22:20

    you...wasted red bull?... :(

It was going to end up in a drain eventually anyway. I just saved myself the unpleasant taste

  • lou17/05/2010 at 22:20

Some people like to panic and some have just two settings, OK and global thermonuclear panic.

i worry... alot (ask lukeh...) but this is on a whole different scale..

  • Alison17/05/2010 at 22:22

Some people like to panic and some have just two settings, OK and global thermonuclear panic.

I don't have that kind of panic attack, I do get hysterical crying attacks sometimes though. I'm sure that's annoying for all concerned.

  • Steven Roy17/05/2010 at 22:22

    like muffins?

Seems a far better option to me.

  • lou17/05/2010 at 22:22

Not weird at all. I managed to avoid caffeine pills when I was a student (when Energy Drink meant Lucozade, which I also don't like). Energy drinks make me feel strange, so I avoid them too.

I don't have that kind of panic attack, I do get hysterical crying attacks sometimes though. I'm sure that's annoying for all concerned.

    It is

Is it weird that I've never tried an energy drink, or caffeine pills or anything. I'm not even big into coffee. I do have bad issues with diet coke though....

Closest I got was Lucozade Sport. Now that has a proper taste that I don't need to spend £25 acquiring

I really must try to be a more sympathetic person.... Bad times.

Cooper has some words from Liuzzi about the loose drain, Tonio thought it caused Rubens to crash. So Adam went to take a look.

I thought he was clutching at straws until someone tweeted him back with this screengrab:
