Wohoo! It’s Sunday at last, which can only mean one thing... it’s time for the Monaco Grand Prix! I’m very excited, I mean, Everybody Loves Monte Carlo.. right? Yesterday’s qualifying was great fun to watch, and with an out of place Ferrari and plenty of traffic to annoy the drivers, the race may be just as exciting. Then again if it’s not particularly mind blowing and no one runs to the podium, i’m sure all will be forgiven. It’s Monaco after all! I wish I could stop with the Monaco talk but there is no where better for Formula 1 to celebrate its 60th Birthday. While everyone at the track enjoys the sun, sea and shockingly loud engines sounds, what can we do?
- Well... Alex from Get Jealous.com is of course in Monaco this weekend and seems to be having an amazing time, please take a moment to catch up with his latest adventures. His photos are equally brilliant, what an experience!
- Sticking to the theme of photographs Axis of Oversteer is also in Monaco this weekend and has taken some brilliant photographs using a tilt shift lens. If you’ve missed them, or would like to marvel at the amazing results of tilt shift then photos can be found here. In addition to this Axis has also posted a blog about his day which is well worth checking out.
- The wonderful commentary team of Crofty, Ant, Holly and Jason, otherwise known as 5livef1, have been, as usual, working hard this weekend to provide brilliant coverage for us back at home. Their pre race podcast is available, and well worth listening to – who doesn’t want to hear what happens when they are let loose in a casino! To accompany the podcast producer Jason has been taking some great behind the scenes shots for us to enjoy. This is my personal favourite.
- Of course, if you’re not keen on watching the race tomorrow, or get bored there are other races you can watch. Everybody’s favourite, Franck Montagny, will be racing in the Superleague Formula race tomorrow at Assen in Holland. I’m sure we’ll all be keeping our eyes and ears pealed for any information about his progress.
I’ll leave you with a reminder that Giggles radio returns this week with the letter ‘O’ so there is plenty to keep you occupied today. Have a lovely day everyone!
I really didn't want to start my Sunday thinking about doting parents.... Cheers for that.
huh?
Spoilt children are a constant thorn in my side :P
What a fantastic Monaco race day daily :) yay for 5 live!!
oooh.. you worried me there, i thought there was something wrong with the daily...
lou needs a giggles award for that subtle plug :)
Hahaha don't worry. I was whining at Bassano.
Daily is perfect :D
The Breakfast Club has just started on BBC2!!!
I'm kinda impervious to that, sorry ;)
he does awards?
#notcompetitive.. ;)
I watched that film once. I found it very confusing.
*phew*
nice shuttle pics on the flickr blog: http://blog.flickr.net/en/2010/05/15/last-flight-of-the-space-shuttle-atlantis/
:)
awesooooooome.
That no one was having breakfast?
:D
I got bored at the start. Then I found it hard to follow.
ooooh it's a film... that would explain it.
Reminds me I must dig out the info on the rest of the mission
Ally Sheedy is great in this
Before Kooky was a a lazy script addition
Some pics from the fashion show.
The McLaren steering wheel looks ridiculously simple compared to the those of other top teams
http://www.itv-f1.com/photo.aspx?IM_ID=57728
i can't believe Jenson isn't involved this year :( i liked seeing him stroll up and down the cat walk in outfits that didn't suit him :)
big blue button
ooh, forgot to say, as i was picking through the mclaren website data, paffett is in there as a named driver. presumably just as a backup, but could there be a chance he sees some friday running before the end of the season?
oh i hope not.
:)
ehehehehe i love dr who 'stop talking to me when i'm cross'
kovi is in there as a test driver too :)
Jenson needs all the running he can get..
ah that's alright then.
Really?
it says this:
{
"name": 'Gary Paffett',
"initials": 'GP',
"code": 'PAF'
},
{
"name": 'Test data',
"initials": 'HK',
"code": 'KOV'
}
Baseline?
could well be.
No chance. That's fine for teams further back but none of the top teams is going to risk it. Putting Klien in to get an experienced driver's view or putting diResta in to see if he is better than the race drivers and to push the race drivers is fine but dropping a world champion for a guy who has never started a race is not going to happen
An idea I had.
http://toomuchracing.com/2010/05/16/start-times-16-may/
Might be useful, might not.
Good idea
I can't sleep. I'm really worried about my job :(
What bits? Whats the biggest worry?
I'm maybe thinking that giving my notice without signing a new contract wasn't the bestest idea I ever had :P
Well thats probably true, I thought you already had a new job?
ta
right lovely people, sees ya all in the morning.
pat i left ya a comment.
I do. I'm going down to get all sorted on Monday. I'm just jittery.
You'll be fine!
Unless I'm unemployed....?
i must go too.
dr who was awesome :D
night mr c and everyone else! xx
i heard it, and it was :)
Night Sir
Night
Night people who are going!
Are you good at your (current) job?
Ok ta. Night.
Yes very.
Who would you be unemployed?
Have your new employers given you any reason to doubt that you wont get a new contract?
Night
Will watch tomorrow... if I find a spare hour..
er, why :)
No. I'm just fretting.
Then don't worry! You're good at your job and they want you, they arent going to bring you in and say "ah yes, sorry" it wont happen!
Hehehe. I guess I could just make Nick look after me.
Can he look after two people
I thought one was a struggle ;)
Yeah that's really not a good idea....
Bless him, it's too much fun
I like him really
Hmmmm
I do
There's just too much material
I'm with Bassano on this one.
Oh stop it. You'll give him a big head!
I'm really proud of myself. I managed to threaten him into getting a haircut :D
If it helps, I don't care
How very big of you!
:)
Threatened with visiting! Not with anything else. Although he does now own golf clubs...
ah thats more acceptable!
Yeah, it's depressing that that's a threat though really :P
Wait wait wait, you threatened him with visiting? You haven't quite thought this relationship thing through have you ;)
There are more destructive pastimes
Is it wrong that I'm wondering what I could get if I threatened to move in.
I didn't realise it was 80's night on BBC2
Scanners now, I remember the beginning
Boom!
Are you feeling okay?
I've given up on sleep for tonight. I might dig out another West Wing DVD
Yeah, just watching David Cronenberg's gruesomeness
WW sounds brilliant, which series?
2
Nick lent me a load of disks. I kinda binged the 1st season in a fit of boredom but I've slowed up a bit.
You've got 6 more series of 26 episodes or so
It's too good to pace
agreed, im now about to go onto series 4 my 3rd time through, its such good tv
Hehehe
I do like it. I do this with everything though. I'm reading books and I'm onto the 4th one. Books 1-3 were read within about 10 days. I've had this one a fortnight and I haven't breached halfway. I think I must be fickle.
I started watching The Wire, that's really good but I'm going to run out of time before it gets removed from my BT on demand... If the 24hrs I was following hadn't been on I'd have cleared several tonight, sort of wishing I had
It's a shame he's gone back to film writing. He crafted such great characters give the proper time
Ep 1 bored me, I'm told I should percevere
Ep1 of any series is just setup
I got crazily into ER once. Then I just went from watching it ALL THE TIME to having a box series abandoned halfway through overnight....
Yeah, true. But it should leave you wanting to see Ep 2
I didn't
I'm bored of people telling me how awesome the Wire is.
I feel like that after ep2. Not desperately though like I did with FlashForward or 24. I need to see more 24..
It's only House that I eagerly follow now
I'm behind on Dexter and Lie To Me
Waiting for Weeds to return though
Ah 24 now there's something I understand. The 1st series is annoying though because the way the only commissioned half initially as a trial so it doesn't really all fit together properly.
That said, I've not hunted down a single episode of the latest one.
I've only seen series 1.
Stop there
Diminshing returns after that
BOOOOOO!!
not-quite-as-good 24 is still better than a lot of other stuff though
I loved ER. I lost track of it a while before the end though.
I could never really afford box sets, I've only got a couple. Redundant now I guess.
I really should go to bed
Till tomorrow...
I should go too, I'm watching old Autocar you tubes to put off sleeping!
Night all
See ya guys. I should go soon.
In fact if I have a hope of watching Franck's Superleague race I should go now.
Sorry Alison for all bailing at once :)
Just spotted in the JA tweets that Kimi was at the Amber Lounge last night....
And I wasn't... sigh....
Kimi is hanging out with the Red Bull/Toro Rosso teams?
Not that I have heard, he seems to be hanging out with a group of friends not on his(?) hospitality yacht but on another smaller one called Iceman... Lee McKenzie from the Beeb saw him walking the track on Friday night all in white, and he was spotted at Amber Lounge last night, so he won't be up early this morning then....
this is the only picture of him I've seen. He is certainly in hiding it seems.
oh and this is the boat.
Very pretty boat. But the logo is practically yelling his presence in Monaco. Am surprised he is not yet mobbed by fans.
Morning Amy...
I saw those I think on Friday and I haven't seen any more pics since then...
The guys I know who are in Monaco haven't got up yet!!!! so I haven't had any news since earlyish yesterday evening....
Once the excitement starts it's not that easy to get close to the yachts there is always a fair bit of security about.... and a bit like going eventing or to polo in the UK when everyone ignores the royals it's uncool to approach the VIPs in Monaco...
They also move the boats slightly away from the dock when people aren't coming and going...
Aw... Shows you exactly how ignorant I am of the prim & proper societies. Here in Singapore, the slightest bit famous person gets literally mobbed. :P
so if the race is at 10, then theres the forum, then Giggles radio and the tennis is on at 2.30 and its the first must see match in such a long time....ahh well, who needs sleep before a Monday at work.
Morning everyone :)
Morning Alex. :)
Just watched the GP2 race on Eurosport...
A veritable train of cars....
A dress rehearsal?...
Having some real problems trying to write the O post for today! O is a tricky letter for the post....
Good letter for music though :)
o for oarsome.
:)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YaIZF8uUTtk :D
BTW, Lady Snowcat, I found an Alonso quote that sort of supports the Sky Sports Italia claim that Kimi's set-up was used on thursday.
But I guess the oversteer was too much for him in the end. :(
Morning folks,
How goes everyone? Finally getting my Saturday Monaco review up in my rickety kitchen.
:)
Morning guys, yay for Monaco race day!
hi lukeh
I have just turned my heater on for the first time since last winter. Smells like burning dust, mmmm.
well at next week could be hot...
I do but hope, but we are definitely coming into winter. Hence why I am trying to skip half of it :D
Winter is awesome.
Although I do want our summer to hurry up now :P
I do like my winter wardrobe, but I'm definitely a warm weather person. I hope your summer peaks between the dates of 23 August and 23 September.
I've had a chat with the weather and it says it's trying to get the month off European Climate work and is hoping to spend that time relaxing with no horrible weather to deal with, so fingers crossed he can provide that nice weather :P
sweet!
Thanks Marilene... I am not too surprised...
Just found this from Adam Cooper....
adamcooperf1 Bumped into Kimi Raikkonen last night and had a good chat, he was in a good mood. Looks like he hasn't cut his hair since his last GP!
Franck starts like... now: http://superleagueformula.com/superleague/SF-Live/Online-broadcasting
I think.
Is he keeping it until his F1 return? #fingerscrossed :D
They started. Franck is second. Woooo for Superleague. (Never thought I'd say that).
Heheh :)
Also... morning all.
Yay for Franck. Is Bourdais racing too? I thought I heard his name.
This is a series in which they keep on talking about Bourdais. Weird.
Morning :)
who does Franck drive for, Bordeaux?
I dunno - still a bit meh about Superleague. Best of luck to Franck though
I have no idea how it works, the rules make no sense, but Franck is second so it's great.
Eeek. Liverpool has 0 points. :(
But I find it hilarious that Tottenham's good league form in BPL is translated here.
Yup. Officialy Girondins de Bordeaux. I have spent half a day learning how to spell it. Thanks Franck.
Yup.
I love the commentary so far: "Off by Sporting Lisbon!"
Why do they call the team's name rather than the driver's?
I swear he just said Sebastien Bourdeaux
Oops, Bourdais causing trouble.
I think he did! :)
It would make more sense if they drive for teams who sounded like their names. Bourdais for Bordeaux please. Franck for, urm... Dank FC?
Heheh.
He says FKM is closing up to the leader.
Also, I find it very odd that they reward Bordy for crashing off by handing him P1 in the next race.
Oooh. Franck had a good lap.
I like the 'push to pass' button. Is it like KERS?
If this was also the case in F1, I think Kamui may have pole for every race. ;)
Not sure how it works, but there's a bit about it on the Wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superleague_Formula#Regulations
:)
Ooh, there's a woman in it. Well... there was.
Galatasaray is a great name.
Harsh on Bourdais ;)
Hehehe!
woohoo flatmate has cooked dinner for her friends and made enough for me. Amazing curry with no effort from myself, yay!
This is fun!
Bonus!
Someone is in their third year of Superleague. Would you really keep doing this for year after year?
it's way hotter than I would ever eat usually, but if I don't have to cook it magically tastes fine.
I think that is true of all food, particularly sandwiches.
that is the perfect example of that theory. Sandwiches always taste boring when you make them yourself, regardless of what is in them.
Wasn't there a rather worrying statistic during the week about how few people paid to see the Silverstone race? It must also be bad for a drivers confidence to drive in front of very few people.
Franck has a really good engineer apparently. I hope it's Rob.
It's pronounced Bahl, not Basil!!
but Franck is such a good driver he doesn't need a Rob!
The red Liverpool reminds me of a Ferrari.
Actually, I kind of like the liveries of these cars.
Oooh, who knew?
Good point.
Superleague:
It's very windy there
Everyone can do with a moralRob, good driver or no. He is like a guardian angel.
Not the commentator :) Whenever I hear him say Basil it makes me think of Basil Fawlty
Booo. Lost time in the pits.
I love that Ben Edwards is the commentator
He is amazing
:D
Ben and someone called Bruce.
I like French Bruce
Oh my - Davide Rigon is there. I was wondering where he went...
He is good except knowing how to pronounce Basle FC ;)
NOOOOOOO.
Oh noooooooooo
FRANCK!
Have you seen Johnny English? French Bruce reminds me of the french villain in that
Nice one
Goodness me, is anyone actually going to finish this race?
That was a fail pitstop
Awwwwww
Aww, he's' just stood watching.
fingers crossed the race coverage on the iPlayer will not be as interrupted like qualifying was yesterday
Poor Franck :(
I like how dinky the tyres look compared to f1 tyres
Goooooo me: http://iheartfranck.com/2010/05/16/superleage-round-2-assen-race-1-report/
Wow. Even before the race is over?
S'all aboout the guy in the pink helmet I'm afraid ;)
Can we get French Bruce on BBC instead of Legard? His voice is very relaxing
I'd rather Bed Edwards over Legard any day
:D
So Christine have you decided... Are you going to watch the grand prix today?
I mean it is the
jewelcrownpinnacleinof thef1formula 1calendarseason ;)♥ French accent.
mais oui
Well... Mr C will be watching it, no doubt to play with his McLaren stuff. I have some blogging type things to do so I might put it on.
I have just discovered a very handy trick... On wordpress you can copy the tags from the list of posts page with the comma separation already in...
I am blogging at the moment. I hope you're still breathing.
Oh, that reminds me, I must email you.
WOW
I am holding my breath until you are done
okay... holds breath for this too ;)
oh dear. *types faster*
*starts going a bit pink*
We're going to get a breathless radio giggles!
Although you could always play Take My Breath Away
Sounds fun.
You can take one breath now.
This is me holding my breath
http://www.flickr.com/photos/alexandronov/4611402450/
phew :)
Well done sir, but I fear there may have been some minor nasal seepage - could you do it with a peg on your nose too?
good thing i am almost done!
My nose is too big for a clothes peg to contain it...
yes here is the evidence:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/alexandronov/4610807407/
Two clothes pegs??
;)
Hehehe
my chrome stopped responding. So I tried to post in Firefox, and that stopped responding too. Wordpress hates me :(
http://howsyourrevolution.files.wordpress.com/2009/12/clothes-pin.jpg
yikes
BREATHE GIGGLES, BREATHE
http://daydreamingoutloud.com/2010/05/16/planning-via-mobile/
YAY!
it has pictures and everything.
oh it's missing a picture! ahh!
right, now it's complete. Now you can read it :D
Woop!
neeeaaaaahhhhhhhhhh...
one of my housemate's is down having breakfast - he is quite simply the noisiest eater i have ever heard in my life
(as well as noisiest belcher and most common user of some of stuff)
i.will.be.calm
It's fab.
how did people have holidays before smartphones?
Just awaiting the drivers parade now. Sat in grandstand M, facing the entry to the swimming pool section - look out for me! ;)
http://twitter.com/alexjsnell/statuses/14091262100
soooo lucky.
his grandstand choices have all been good. I will remember these for when I go :D
Is there anyone actually there today?
Morning!! I had a f1 dream about Monaco yesterday :(
Something to ponder while it's on my mind...
*he* has not won a GP here since 2001. *He*'s been beaten by the Maccas more times than he's won. McLaren have won the most GPs in the last decade here (2000, 2002, 2005, 2007, 2008), Renault won 2, Ferrari, Williams and Brawn GP won the others.
#randomstats
Hi guys BTW, probably not live-commenting this one.
Morning :) aww, even your subconscious is determined to be there. Was it a nice dream?
Morning Lou. What happened in your dream?
Meanwhile, a Thursday and Saturday review while we're waiting for the coverage to start.
:)
PING --> 2010 Monaco Grand Prix (Monte Carlo, Round 6, May 13th – 16th) - http://theformulaoneandmotorsportsarchive.wordpress.com/2010/05/16/2010-monaco-grand-prix-monte-carlo-round-6-may-13th-16th/
I'm off for a wash, some toast and a pot of tea. Back in a bit
:)
Just watched Webber's pole lap. Commited as ya like!!!
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/8684778.stm
*UK users only. :( :( :(
I have started in on my race snacks early. I just spilt Tzatziki on myself. I don't even know how to say that!
it was lovely, the race was awesome. The weather was perfect and the media centre was mind blowing...
Youtube link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GsUuLdFFZKc
I am assuming a certain Brit featured greatly, then?
Ping: http://sidepodcast.com/2010/05/16/live-monaco-2010-the-race/
Depending on circumstances, I may be back before the race starts. ;)
my stupid computer is dead. Grrrrrrrrr
i don't really remember that... I think so. I know alonso did well and provided a heap of overtaking moves. It was really close and exciting racing.
Ah, overtaking at Monaco. If it happens, I think 2010 would have to be considered an exciting season. Rule change or no. :P
phew!
Its a good thing you're a computer guy and have spares!
What's gone wrong with it then?
might be the power supply. Talk about bad timing. How cabn I buy an ipad if I need to buy a new computer?
I think you're meant to change your life to suit the Apple product, not the other way around :P
I know, but the ipad cant store all my stuff. I really dont want to buy a computer right now. Grrrrrr
The logistics would be difficult, but I might be able to lend you a mac if you get desperate. Email me with what you need it be able to do.
Thanks for the offer. Worse case I can probably find something at work
Yay for Franck being interviewed. No Bourdais though. Not sure why.
Franck started fourth but was up to third by the first corner. Great work from Mr M.
Franck lost places in the pit stop but just overtook for third.
Robert Doornbos refers to himself in the third person.
Franck finished third. Woo!
Go Bourdais!!
I mean, Bourdeaux!!
It's over already? We still have 20 laps to go.
Have blogged the second race: http://iheartfranck.com/2010/05/16/superleage-round-2-assen-race-2-report/
Ping: http://sidepodcast.com/2010/05/16/live-giggles-radio-o/
oh no :(
http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2010/05/16/crime-and-punishment/#comment-15355
angry lava :)
doh, fail
A bit of an old media attitude there. I tell you and you don't dare question me.
ah boo, im not surprised though, it was only a matter of time
noo! :( why are F1 fans so mean sometimes :(
he's been attracting a lot of loonies lately.
Pfft
It's the internet.
There is no point having a blog with no comments. I don't believe him for a second
sidepodcast doesn't have loonies
He doesn't have the authorise them all
ooooppsss Webber was fined 2,200 euros for speeding in the pitlane today...
http://www.fia.com/en-GB/mediacentre/f1_media/Documents/mco-document-33.pdf
he has to read them though. my guess is that's probably the bigger issue.
yeah but you dont report things as definite fact either, or rarely, joe is a journalist, he'll attract differetn types of people
We have had a few in the past that have had to be removed
Well that is just going to ruin his day
That reminds me... When is that F1 game coming out ;)
he's far more popular and popularity brings out the loonies.
Not sure that he really wants a blog...
I think he likes to just post interesting stuff that he has access to...which is great in it's own right...
Not tooo sure that he likes peeps to disagree with him either... but I may be wrong there....
:P
:)
:)
:)
exactly
it's interesting that more and more blogs are turning off comments. f1minute for example.
you can blog without comments.
I guess that wouldn't have made the difference as he had a few secs in hand at all times....
May have affected Rosberg though...
Maybe if you're a 'broadcaster'. For the rest of us comments are lifeblood.
it didn't hurt f1 minute (when we did it)
When someone disagreed with Joe he decided to take his ball home. The "start your own blog" is juvenile. He wasn't attacked as he so dramatically puts it.
just a fine? in times past, that would've been an instant drive-through.
F1 Minute is a broadcaster of facts. It doesn't have opinions so doesn't attract comment by nature.
Found this tweet from Neil Cole of Dave fame rather funny....
Looking at Monaco Grand Prix thru Kimi's eyes... ie: can't be arsed, bored now, stopped watching...
from what i remember f1minute didnt show real opinion though, it was more stating the facts but in a less formal, nicer way. if you show opinion exactly half of the people reading are going to disagre (sometimes)
it happened at 13:31... so on his outlap? must have been before the race started..
ahh. that would explain it. silly error, though.
true enough. i would i read one blog that didn't have comments this time last year. now i read 9 or 10. and they're not worse blogs for it.
Presuming the times are local it was on the way the grid for the start.
you're probably looking at too small a picture. much like when we throw our toys out of the pram, it isn't a single incident that causes it, a combination of very annoying things (or people) will be behind it.
From James Allen on Twitter:
#f1 It seems that the tyre supply decision for 2011 is now a straight choice between Michelin and Pirelli. I know which one I'd choose!
Michelin every time for me..
By the way, did we all see that Ross has taken over Trullis job?
http://bit.ly/d1hJDr
He's got pictures and everything
#f1 FIA stewards have decided that Schumacher's pass is illegal and add 20 seconds to his time.
from James Allen
go Damon!
w00t!
Damon finally became Damien
I go get a glass of water, and this happens.
But I'm pretty sure it'll be appealed anyway.
woohoo!
Eh?
Damons still angry about 1994 ;)
Can it be appealed? The rules are so complicated now I have no idea
Oooh, Buemi gets his first point of the season.
Shows his nasty side.
I think post race ones can be but in race ones cant
I hope not
I would guess yes. My basis is when BAR was questioned in Imola 05 with their fuel collector tank, and the FIA appealed against their own stewards after it was initially deemed legal.
Also, didn't Lewis appeal the Spa 08 decision?
Ahh. There is that.
The last thing we need is a drwan out appeal but I still think it is a stupid rule. I don't see how something can be legal every lap but the last.
as much as i disagree with the decision, i hope they dont appeal it, post race appears annoy me
Agreed.
I think the way its worded and hte way its meant is different and this is clearly the first time its been realised
I agree, should be consistent across the race
New Teams Championship update by the way - http://northernwaffler.wordpress.com/2010/05/16/carnage-in-monaco/
Don't know what took me so long, I think I was debating the meaning of life or something.
Schumacher finishes 12th
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/83684
They'll have to explain those green flags at the end as well.
A certain Mr Rosberg will be quietly quite pleased...
And a certain Mr Massa less so...
ergh come 'celebrities' make me very mad...
who goes to a race and sits there listening to their ipod! gah!
http://www.gettyimages.com/detail/99595598/Getty-Images-Entertainment
depends if he can get commentary on it
good start for Roger. I've forgotten to breathe.
I've got the feed open and keep flicking between it & the cricket whilst listening to Alex. Nadal's shorts - what was he thinking?
Roger is officially trying to kill me.
Here we go:
RT @NobleF1: Mercedes GP has decided to appeal the Schumacher penalty.
oh good lord
I hate courts of appeal on race results, BUT it was the wrong decision so I'm with Merc on this one.
The rule says one thing, the marshals did another.
JA confirms as well:
#f1 OFFICIAL - Mercedes' has decided to appeal the FIA stewards' decision to penalise Schumacher
I'm still betting the FIA will get caught out on a technical. Initial fan reaction has been surprisingly supportive of Schumacher (more than half of what I saw) - mostly because he was racing when others weren't.
well i suppose we've got a week off next week... got to avoid any of those silent f1 weeks ;)
I'd appeal if I was Ross...
Green flags means the race was on....
Anything for a bit of interest....
Stirring the pot it's called...
Alias saying that post-race drive throughs cant be appealed
Indeed. But I'm thinking if Merc can make the case that the ruling was so wrong, they may still get things swayed to their favour.
a quick hit and run folks
it's been an absolute pain formatting this. Wordpress has been a real pain this weekend an has just not been accepting any basic html commands
>:(
AND this may be the first real test for Jean Todt.
now i'm off to the pub to lose what's left of sunday night - yikes!!
If it can't be appealed it can't be appealed. Didn't this come up in another case recently? Lewis at Spa?
I like the dress too!!! But not on her....
And here's the thing: I'm pretty sure Merc know what happened in Spa 08. But they're trying anyway. Why?
agreed. could be interesting.
In the meantime, will someone please make this heavy rain go away!?
Takuma Sato has completed his Rookie Orientation at Indianapolis.
that's everyone isn't it?
I believe so, I'm only following on Twitter though
Just turned it on - Sevadra is the last driver to run. Looks good though
*that should of course say Saavedra
:o
maybe it's just me, but it's a slightly worrying sign for Foyt IV that he has no personal sponsors with him - his helmet is just red.
How can anyone with that name not raise sponsorship? I know he is hopeless but there must be people who will pay just to meet AJ never mind have their name of IV's helmet or overalls
Roger sucks.
That's a comment I didn't ever expect to see
I think he is actually trying to lose.
Whoever said 20/20 Cricket was exciting was wrong.
There are just more opportunities to wake you up
This comentator sounds like XFM's Sean Keaveney
From Joe:
So hang on - Mercedes' appeal is admittable? What am I missing here?
http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2010/05/16/mercedes-appeals-stewards-decision/
There are many different types of appeals and courts and stewards. It gets compex :D
That's... interesting. Can someone get Alia to come here and explain this? :P
Just like Lewis at Spa. The ICA will listen to all the evidence then decide they can't hear the case they just heard. A total waste of time money and effort just because Brawn has a different interpretation of the rule to everyone else.
I think basically you can't appeal to the person who gave you the penalty, it would be like me being your teacher and giving you detention which wasnt negotionable (badly spelled word there) and then you going to the head teacher and over turning it. Basically .
Isn't this exactly what happened with Lewis at Spa 08, only to be told that they can't appeal? (See Steven's earlier comment.) What makes this different?
From @rubarrichello:
I throw the steering cause wanted to get out as soon as possible. After the shunt I was facing the wrong side of the track andcar was on fire
do we believe him?
Probably nothing, but it means they get a genuine place to say what they did and why and what was wrong with what the FIA did. And they get to do it in front of press.
I didn't know the car was on fire but that was my first thought. A driver's arms are so restricted in there that throwing must be difficult. I assumed he was trying to throw it over the barrier.
I do, he seemed to be in a big hurry.
that sounds scary... and it would be much more believable if he had appeared to get out of the car instantly afterwards...
am going to rewatch it if i can find it.. *runs off to find a clip*
given the circumstances, i do. replays back him up. and from the looks of it, no penalty either.
he could've thrown it in front of him though.
I doubt he analysing the best position.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RMdqad7O5Ek
it doesn't look to be on fire?...
Understandable but he threw it onto the race line, he knew where it was...
Today sucks. I'm supporting schumacher and getting annoyed at Rubens, what a rubbish day!
not sure there was a great deal of care in the aim when your cars on fire
He can't start to get out until there are no cars coming at him. He was just removing the only obstruction to him getting out then keeping his head down hoping nothing would hit him till there was a gap in traffic
I remember flames
i remember them zooming in on rubens' exhausts, showing fire.
i will find a better clip :D
they are just igniting at the very end of that clip
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/83688
Chandhok also revealed that he dragged Barrichello's errant steering wheel all the way down to the tunnel section of the track.
"It got lodged underneath the car, so I could feel it scraping all the way through Mirabeau. Then the noise stopped and one of the marshals reported back that it fell out of my car in the tunnel. But then Bruno ran over it – so that steering wheel has been well and truly Hispania'd!"
It got to the tunnel!? wow!
:D
He is fantastic.
Mr C said something about it being at Rascasse. I assume Karun had simply kicked it a little way up the road with a wheel.
he couldn't have known it was on fire before that though?
i believe him.. i wouldn't want to be facing the wrong way on an f1 tract...just playing devils advocate as they say..
Not surprising at Rubens's age that his wheel needs HRT
woah!
watching the replay on the bbc, i don't believe rubens. that was a frustrated reaction and the wrong reaction.
alos gonna cost willliams a fortune
he seems to throw it out instantly then take a bit longer to show any movement of getting out of the car. this could be cause other cars were approaching though. presumably it's safer to stay in the car and get out when they pass?
The wheel wasn't thrown as aggressively as I thought at the time but at the time I thought it was about getting out the car fast
i understand the taking it out straight away but dont see why he threw it!
do you think Frank will make him pay for some of it?..
DC said he had to buy one from his team when someone 'borrowed' his from autosport?
green flag for the entire field at indy just given - live on the indycar site
Definitely stay in the car with the belts on until there is a gap when cars are coming at you at 150mph
more racing? oh blimey. am on it.
Where would he put it?
so.. he has time to take the steering wheel off and place it on the top of the car then?
throw it the other way
free practice
me too. A man of his experience should know no matter the situation throwing the wheel onto the racing line can cause trouble. Am surprised he'd do that and I can understand his desire to get out of the car as quick as possible but even if he was frustrated, throwing the wheel out isn't gonna solve anything.
silly boy. :(
There is a difference between one being lost at a race and one being nicked from a car you are responsible for.
anywhere other than the path of an on coming car would be a start i should think??
To the side, down on the left, not trying to throw it as hard as poss
ooooh. on a sunday?
THe race is today?
How can you have rookie tests and race on the same day?
yep - the run up to the 500 is only two weeks this year
Yeah this is for the Indy 500 and they have odd rules.
Yesterday and today are 'rookie orientation' plus a few hours for all cars
He doesn't know which direction he is going to go in when he gets out of the car so best lob the wheel out of the way completely
the race is on the 30th
rookie tests and practices yesterday and today, qualifying next week and he race the week afterward
Qualifying is next week over two days (was four days - cost saving), then the following week is the race (not long after Turkish GP)
Makes sense
he should know he can't throw.. remember the glove incident? ;)
I can never remember Indy not being on the same day as Monaco
:D :D
Very rare
Depends. Monaco is also 6 weeks after Easter and the 500 is always on Memorial Day weekend
i missed this!
Mark's gone in (to the pool) and both the drivers went off the top of the energy station into the harbour so hopefully we have still got two drivers for Istanbul in two weeks' time
http://uk.reuters.com/article/idUKLDE64F0GP20100516
one of the photographers in the pool was Peter J Fox.. nice to know British photographers don't care about getting cameras wet :)
http://www.sutton-images.com/preview.asp?filename=d10mon1650.jpg
I bet that was why he was so out of breath in the interview because he said he had just got out of the sea
that's why both Mark and Seb got out of the sea for Mark to speak to the BBC right?
i thought that was the pool, but i clearly missed something.
a pic for you
http://www.sutton-images.com/preview.asp?filename=d10mon1596.jpg
slightly better one
http://www.sutton-images.com/preview.asp?filename=d10mon1595.jpg
and an some action shot
http://www.sutton-images.com/preview.asp?filename=d10mon1567.jpg
Mark said he was just out of the sea and while he was being interviewed a boat pulled up behind him. I know the Energy Station is big but it doesn't have boats in the pool
no one in the crowd is cheering for poor roger, how quick can I get to Madrid?
never thought i'd say this, but this commentator at indy is a million times worse than legard - needs to be heard to be believed
:D
Indy:
Franchitti and Dixon first to break the 226 MPH mark
That's good start
not as quick as you would be able to if you lived in Europe ;)
I will be in Basel in 108 days, I think I'm going to kick it a little.
Amy... what time is it there?.. 4:40?..
bingo
you're crazy...
thankfully I'm not actually doing any work at work tomorrow :D
:D
I think it is just an early start to avoid jetlag when she is in Europe
blimey! 100 days is a very early start..
we have new staff in incubation and I am babysitting them all day. Which basically means they do all the work and I just watch to make sure they don't break any laws. I can do that on an hours sleep, surely.
can you imagine what would happen if Amy started coding?.. she'd never sleep!
This is Amy. She is very organised
I should bring this up next time my dad mentions that I should have done IT at uni.
as can be seen in my new blog post http://daydreamingoutloud.com/2010/05/16/planning-via-mobile/
right fols - i'm off.
the rain has stopped, so i'm going to the pub
:)
noooooo, tie break. I hate these.
see ya!
You are going to have every minute in Europe planned before you get here
nooo, I won't go that far! Those type of holidays are no fun.
YOU BLOGGED!
i wish i could do things like this... but if i start planning things in a really exact way i get waaay too stressed..
Giggles stopped breathing, I had to!
YOU SAVED GIGGLES!

suddenly makes sense...
what do we need to do to get a post about the ausi gp.. i wanna know why and how they got locked in the track.. Amy said she'd explain it in the blog post! :(
she did. can we drown him?
stay tuned for "Amy's Grand Prix Diary" coming to a Sidepodcast near you, eventually.
:)
depends if you want to go back to giggles house for more giggles radio i suppose... ;)
match poooooooint :(
he won't die, amy with save him with her words.
theres a lot more words required! Todays post was mostly pictures :D
Did Chequered flag preview podcast go silent in hte middle for others?
Mr C... bring your audio recording stuff to Spa.. we can all ask her and Pamela about the grand prix and then.. if you release it as a podcast she'll probably end up transcribing it... it's one way to get her to blog :P
we're off to watch 2012, catch ya in a couple o'hours
ROGER LOOOOOOOOOSES
:)
you took photos for the Grand Prix.. i saw them..
one did, one didn't. It was on the feed twice.
i listened to it when it was played on the radio.. was fine then.
have fun... watching the future (??)
ah right, well i cant get it to work past 15 mins, boo
Nadal is the first person in history to win 3 Masters events in a row. #tennisfacts
And with that I think I might sleep. Or do I want to watch the presentation. Hmm.
oooooo the goodwood site has a new look! i like it :)

night amy
http://tweetphoto.com/22723873 - awwwwwwwwwww!!!!!
BBC4 now for a doc on the Le Mans 1955 disaster
I am sure that has been shown before
Probably. I've never seen it.
I am not sure it looks like my type of thing...
We're 9 minutes in and I've learned more about the atmosphere of sportscar racing in that era than in almost anything else.
They have just said Le Mans was and is the longest track in the world?????
*facepalm*
Poor research. Odd given the level of detail of the rest
for Christine - http://xpb.cc/viewpicture.asp?id=367619
it's kimi! - http://xpb.cc/viewpicture.asp?id=368311
Hellooo :)
Hello
hey
How are all of you?
i'm good thanks. what about you?
oh and for when Amy wakes up... i have another pic for her - http://xpb.cc/viewpicture.asp?id=368450
I'm alright. I'm still pretty nervy about job sorting tomorrow.... Silly emotional womanness :(
aww i'm sure it will be alright and work out for the best. Nerves are good though, it means it matters to you :)
Yeah. I really want to go see Nick next week. Silly new job sorting annoyingness
ooo you're heading over to Dubai?
I hope so. I need to get my boss to agree to push my start date back.
Hi Alison
Hello Steeeeeven
I am totally unimpressed with this BBC documentary. They are showing the crash footage too often and Levegh's name is pronounced Leveck which so far only his co-driver has done.
Not really silly...
You will want to start on a good note...
Good luck but be prepared for disappointment too...
I didn't like the over-use of the footage. I did learn how it happened though, I didn't know that before.
The photos leading up to the accident I haven't seen before. There always seems to have been a lot of dispute where as there is is quite clear and you have to wonder how many close calls there must have been for exactly the same thing before.
Don't worry. Just relax and think what Rob would tell you.
http://xpb.cc/viewpicture.asp?id=367619
:D
I want holiday times :D
When did you decide you wanted a holiday?
http://xpb.cc/viewpicture.asp?id=367804
he isn't mfc though.. he's got a clipboard.. not an ipad ;)
Yesterday....?
So you are some kind of anti-Amy. No planning whatsover.
When are you going?
Monday I hope.
Can you get a sensible price for a flight as quickly as that?
Yeah. Unless ash cloud persists. That could push the price up.
So apart from ash, strikes and new employer is there anything that could stop this happeneing?
:D
Probably....
ehehehe i just checked the fantasy racers scores... Lukeh made it into the biggest fallers lists... he's now 343rd which makes me better about being 390th :)
#notcompetitive.
Mr C is beating me though cause he's 245th :(
could be worse lou... could be 429th...
PING, sorry it's so late, busy evening http://gridwalktalk.wordpress.com/2010/05/16/monaco-grand-prix-2010-where-the-streets-have-many-names/
Haha, wow!
oooh :(
i like that you except
my competitivenessthat i am not competitive :)I have accepted my inability to compete with most things and merely welcome the inevitable fail that follows :)
haha! i can tell you compared to me you would not fail at driving games..
christ that film was long. good, but long.
is amy asleep yet?
yes, she went to sleep 5am her time.. she's going to be tired tomorrow..
That race review was hard to type up mainly because my 'a' ley keeps not working...
Hehe!! :D
Oooh what film?
is it like the key (i think it was the question mark) that wasn't working on mr c's keyboard?
remind me next wednesday to show you on the f1 game on my ipod.
To be fair the ipod game is bloody hard.
well i can show you on the brawn, red bull, or bmw games.. doesn't really make a difference i'm rubbish at them all :)
Awwww. Driving games on the iPod are a bit hard though I reckon...
The rest you have no excuse :P
2012
whoop!
Ah yeah. I thought that was mindless fun :) I have a bit of a thing for John Cussack though so....
:(
oh my goodness..this roundabout scares me..
http://www.bbc.co.uk/wiltshire/content/images/2007/10/22/msn_magic_roundabout_470x350.jpg
he doesn't appear to have aged. i'm pretty sure i look older since the grifters, why hasn't he?
It's like a motorised waltzers
aww we have one of those, epic fun/chaos
having to take my test on that would kill me.
brilliant title!
Interesting sense of 'fun' you hve
Err I didn't realise the big roundabout in the middle runs counter clockwise. Whos crackpotted idea was that???
Hehe :)
is that the swindon thing? we talked about this before right? it's not hard, the football stadium is right next to it i think. you just drive each roundabout like a normal one, it just looks mental from the air.
But the one in the middle goes the wrong way??
Swings and roundabouts.
Well, roundabouts and roundabouts. And roundabouts.
yeah i think it's in Swindon.. not seen it talked about before but i forget many things. it was mentioned on a podcast i'm listening to and i had to check it out.. mental is not even the word..
you don't even notice the middle one
I think it's a stupid idea... Why didn't they just put lights in? Or a proper roundabout?
it was a long time ago, when i went around it you don't notice the one in the middle.
keep in mind it doesn't look like the ariel shot from above, when you're at ground level. most of london is way more scary to drive than going round a roundabout.
I dont think I'm ever going to drive in london! Walking is scary enough!
:D I was very proud of myself when I negotiated M25 without incident.
as i keep saying about many things in life, you have to try new things in case the status quo is completely wrong.
but the obvious answer to your question is roundabouts are greener and don't break down.
its amazing!
walking isn't that scary! it's the not walking when the man is red that seems to catch us out ;)
The scariest thing I've ever had to do in a car though is somehow miraculously cross 4 lanes of traffic in what seems like about 200m. I can't even think how they've designed the road to make this necessary but I always forget how bad it is until it happens.... I really should find a less lethal route.
I get worried enough on a roundabout here that is 2 lanes but suddenly splits into 3 lanes on one part then goes back into 2! Drivers never seem to know where to go...
They cause lots of tailbacks.
Damn that little red man and his mischievious behaviour :)
there is a round about near me.. which is very close to the hospital.... thank goodness. I've lost count of the number of crashes which happen there each week.
It's just lots of little roundabouts and junctions, you don think of it as a whole roundabout. I
Try it. It is an experience.
This is not good advice!!!
i think they are somehow different in London. I have absolutely no problem normally.
However the other day did teach me never ever to trust you on a road.. you nearly got me run over by a bus!!!
Someone said that to me about chilli con carne and the results aren't worth discussing. I fear the same result could be said of this experience :)
What can I say, I really wanted a pizza
*runs*
Chilli con carne is awesome. Although I had no idea what 'con carne' meant until six weeks ago when I was in Spain and ordered a pastry thing which was con carne. Apparently it is "with meat".
Yeah its fine, bumper to bumper, hardly move. Infuriating.
I nearly got hit by a bus outside me work last week. I was walking on the pavement and had to literally jump out the way as it approached the bus stop too fast and steered into the kerb.... Scary times.
humph! i refuse to cross the strand with you unless i have triple checked nothing is going to hit me.
you're admitting to being scared of a roundabout?
I have managed to get up! Sooo tired :(
holy cow
I still blame the little red man
I'm not scared of a roundabout. I'm scared by the stupidity of other drivers.... I'm not a wimp, I'd have a go at driving more or less anywhere. Driving into London is unnecessary though!
we have a 'shared space' section in our town. Which has the idea that there are no road markings and no pavement.. pedestrians and cars all share the same space.. it's crazy scary and buses really don't look when they go round some of the corners!
as long as the coffee keeps flowing in my office, it will be a good day. I hope. 5pm feels a long way away.
That's the one
oh my!
i have a pic for you....
http://tweetphoto.com/22723873
London I think
awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
that's also an interesting idea. the theory is marking give people too much confidence, when in reality, it's just some white paint.
How little sleep?
hmmm..
we have one with 4 exits, its really not as bad as it looks
I didn't think you had been to bed yet
in the end, 2 hours.
can you film yourself driving it one day?
she posted it just after you went to sleep. i thought it would make you happy when you were tired in the morning :)
They talked about having it here but never did it. What they did instead was do it on the coast road, a narrow winding road which is quite busy in summer. It also gets unbelievably foggy. Bad idea. You need the lines when it is foggy..
remind me in 2 weeks and ill film myself when ive got the car back! or ill put it in the calendar
hmm yeah, it does work to an extent. but it's when you get a stupid car driving on the wrong side which makes things get a bit crazy.. and very dangerous.
i'd argue you need cats eyes, not lines?
will do
But I think keeping cars in one place and people in another is a sound starting point.
You need anything you can get. I like it in towns apart from people drifting to the middle of the road. On an open road it could be construed as murder.
they are both so smiley!
i should add that lines are useful for ambulance drivers, so there's also an argument to keep them. but i do think the general public see the lines as some kind of invisible force field that keeps them safe.
som pics of a section of our shared space
http://s0.geograph.org.uk/geophotos/01/28/56/1285675_684288d2.jpg
http://www.topboxdesign.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/Ashford-Town-Centre-sustainable-place-for-living-and-working-588x588.jpg
:D such a cute couple!
i don't get that? why?
We have some unmarked roads out in the country. That's mainly because they're not wide enough for cars to pass each other at any speed so lines would look ridiculous!
You can't be serious. No-one would ever allow that
i like that. i hope it proves workable.
true story. it won an award or something i think.. it's kinda scary..
My thoughts exactly!! Looks like a death trap... What happens at dusk? Do you all have to wear reflective vests to go outside?
There is n award for most pedestrians killed on a road?
but the data backs up the theory. i did some work on this a long while back. if driver know people could be in the road, they drive with more awareness than if they believe there's a separate space for them.
even people aren't trapped on the path and can walk off at any time. a driver's mind somehow tells them people our out of harms way/
we've had it for a few years.. it works.. no one has been killed yet. the speed limit is 10mph so it's pretty safe, but chaos is caused by drivers without common sense... which are common
ask yourself, what is the value of a path, with no barrier? it's just a kerb.
cars mount kerbs all the time, why pretend that a path is a line that is in any way safer? it's bunkem
it's not too bad at night
http://www.kent.gov.uk/images/ashford shared space at night_v_Variation_1.jpg
and isn't in the centre of town so not many people are around there late at night..
That seems fine..
I'd be concerned about visibility in the evening/night though. People here walk in the road a lot as there isn't a lot of pavement action out of the town centre. If they're not wearing the right clothing, they're almost impossible to see. There are a lot of deaths.
oops my link was broken..
http://tinyurl.com/2u9ugkt
It is still safer to have people and cars separated than have them share a space
Big tourist area. Road is busier than you might think, high up on the coast, a lot of the people using it aren't familiar with it and some are so familiar they drive it far too quickly. Fog rolls in, car wanders all over the road and hits oncoming traffic.
There are a lot of biker accidents up there.
as far as i know. the stats don't back that up.
i agree common sense says that should be the case, but it just isn't. for whatever reason, and there's money being pored into this left and right, it appears that the more dangerous you make a place look, the safer it turns out to be.
I think it is okay in town in a slow speed area, particularly if it isn't a main road
I think the more time you spend with the public, the less you trust them to use their own judgement about ANYTHING....
That was the thinking on this coast road. It used to be covered in road markings and speed limit signs. The thinking was that if you remove them there are fewer distractions and people will watch the road. Perfectly fine when it is clear...
i could see that being an issue. it's interesting that sleeping policemen are being dug up, because they're not environmentally friendly. how long before the same happens to traffic lights?
yikes, etc...
To an extent that is always the case. American footballers do insane things with their bodies becuse they have loads of padding. Racing drivers do things that previous generations would never have considered because they are safer.
The bottom line though is if road traffic is to move at reasonable speed(20-30mph) through any area then you cannot have it mixing with pedestrians.
why are they no environmentally friendly?
Constant acceleration and braking for no real reason?
ah yes, that.
you slow down, drop a gear and then accelerate. burns unnecessary fuel.
Jon,
Me an you are tied exactly in the Panda Racing Series - I'm sorry, but I may have to beat you comprehensively by the end of the season.
Sorry.
I say replace traffic lights with F1 lights and a James Allen voiceover shouting out as it is building up. Not only would it be awesome but It would also drive down the amount of cars on the road because everyone would get fed up of hearing it
:) :)
oh that, i havent been trying :P
I read section of Tony Benn's diary once. #nopolitics. In the 60s he was MP for somewhere in Bristol and the council and other MPs got together and try an experiment to see what would hppen if they turned off all the traffic lights. They turned all of them off and nothing significant changed. Some areas got a little faster nd some a little slower but overall no change. There were no more accidents or injuries. Having learned that t the end of the trial they switched them all back on and carried on like nothing had happened.
Of course there are a lot more cars on the roads now
you're sounding more like Coulthard with every passing day
nah they'd hate it, then replace it with a legard voice, then they'd get really bored of that and complain for James back
When we had bad flooding here, all the lights were broken for ages and people said they quite liked it. In a lot of areas they've remained off. Most of the roundabouts now only function with lights for an hour in the morning and evening.
shhh. i checked it for the first time today actually and couldnt quite get my head round the team decision id made a few months ago as its ruuuuuuubbish
i wonder how much difference that makes.
my secondary choices of sutil and hulkenberg aren't paying off... yet
i'm going to leave you all discussing roads and things... night all! xxx
I did find our congestion was worse 4-5pm than it usually would be without any input from lights. Other than that, things probably moved a bit smoother overall. I think we'd function fine without them.
I think quite a lot. Drivers now are also a lot more selfish and a lot less patient
i have them too hehe
Night Lou
Where we're goin' we don't need roads
night
Night Lou.
I'm going to watch Outnumbered and hope it calms me down.
:D
anyway, this is only a brief stop-off - i am far far far too drunk to hold any sort of reasonable conversation
true enough. in part i suspect to advances in soundproofing. what we really should do is mandate open cockpits...

GO
If EJ ever posted a comment, I believe it would look something like this
Modern cars remove you from the environment
true enough, but conversely i concentrate more when completely excluding noise with ear plugs phones.
People who concentrate are in the minority just as people who feel they need to hve more than two fingers on the wheel to have control are.
#sidepodspace
Monaco has made me lose track of the shuttle mission. The first space walk is tomorrow at 13:15 UK time lthough these thngs can start anything up to an hour and a half early if the prepartions go better than scheduled.
