Good morning, Sidepodders and welcome to this glorious day. I feel that enforced joviality is the only way to get myself through Tuesdays.
Given that there seems to be little news out there that doesn't come with some serious political baggage, I suspect it is best to stick largely to the F1 world. One story that had the world screaming in anticipated pain was that of our tiny Overlord Bernie saying that he would approach Channel 5 if the BBC follow through on their threat to drop F1 coverage. Hopefully this has about as much chance of happening as Bernie's 'medals' idea.
Williams have designed new front and rear wings for Pastor Maldonado to smash in the upcoming Germand Grand Prix. Outgoing Technical Director, Sam Michael, hopes that while Pastor is searching for some inviting barriers to crash into, Rubens Barrichello can pilot the new parts round the Nurburgring quickly enough to earn some tasty points.
Pirelli will continue their search for better compounds in Germany, providing each team with a new version of the soft tyre for Friday practice.
Daniel Ricciardo is hoping that he doesn't come away from the German GP with just a sympathetic 'well at least you finished' pat on the back as he did at Silverstone. The Aussie reckons that now he's learnt some more about this whole 'tyre management' thing, he can get closer to new team mate, Tonio Liuzzi.
Away from F1, there is much Harry Potter-fuelled wailing as people flock to see the last film and put the whole saga to bed. I haven't been to see it yet, but I may be the only person who hasn't as the film took a frankly ridiculous £23M at the UK Box Office on its opening weekend. Clearly no-one has yet spotted that Daniel Radcliffe can't actually act very well.
Inevitably there is more Harry Potter news doing the rounds as the case against JK Rowling, claiming that she lifted the plot of the Goblet of Fire from The Adventures of Willy the Wizard by Adrian Jacobs, has come to an end. The claim failed after the estate of the late Jacobs failed to make a payment of £1.5M as security for costs. I'm not sure I entirely know what that all means, other than that Rowling wins.
And with that news I shall bid you adieu, until next time.
why hello brand new day.
"Williams have designed new front and rear wings for Pastor Maldonado to smash in the upcoming Germand Grand Prix"
hehe!
The Aussie reckons that now he's learnt some more about this whole 'tyre management' thing
took webber half a season, he'll do well to achieve that in one race.
cheers for the daily good sir.
Given that Ricciardo's fastest lap was within 4 tenths of Tonio, I think he did a pretty good job. I suppose his target is to try and close that gap as much as possible by the end of the season. I just wish that he'd admit that there are two 'i's in his name.

Morning everybody
Well done!
I have found another run for you http://sport360.com/uae/news/160571--adnic-yas-run-to-take-place-at-the-circuit-aimed-at-athletes-of-all-levels
Those participating in the 10km and 3km events will start from the official F1 starting grid before finishing under the chequered flag.
That is quite cool.
I wonder if they will tell you your pitstop time if you take a break between laps? :)
(ba dum tisch)
:)
A bit of a busy morning for Joe

Morning everyone... (just sneaked it)
Afternoon Alex
;)
Am I right in thinking that something has gone crazybonks with your RSS feed Christine?
Depends what you mean. I updated a load of old posts recently.
I keep reading posts and going... hey I read this one before... I thought I'd gone slightly insane (in the membrane) but this is reassuring.
Apologies. I made some time to go through the old posts and strip out all the defunct PicApp code.
Don't be sorry... I'm just so tired at the moment I have to regularly check that I am perceiving reality in the same way as others.
So I was thinking... What with Vettel running away with the season and people being worried about that... and trying to change the rules and everything... Why don't we suggest rule changes that might make things closer.
I have an idea... Why not make it so that every race of the season the points count gets higher?
We need to work out a way to make the gaps between points grow too though.
So I was thinking that for every race you add 2 points for a win. Maybe you could also add 1 point to the odd points paying positions one race and 1 point to the even points paying positions the next or somehting but that might be too complicated.
So as Silverstone was the 9th race a win would have been worth 25 + (8 x 2) = 41 points. And a win at the brazillian grand prix will be worth 25 + (18 x 2) = 61 points.
That would close the championship up!
Unless Vettel keeps winning and pulls away even further..? To be honest, I'm not that bothered about the title hunt as long as the races are good.
The weird thing is that it would currently push Vettel further ahead...
From
Vettel 204
Webber 124
Alonso 112
Hamilton 109
Button 109
To
Vettel 244
Alonso 128
Webber 124
Button 121
Hamilton 113
But the main difference is that the difference between 1st and 2nd for the rest of the season is 70 points now versus Vettel's lead of 80 points whereas the new gap would be 270 points!
Well yes I don't mind... I just thought it was a much easier way than changing the rules all of the time and guarantees to make the end of the season closer.
You are too tired to function but you can still do maths :)
Maybe go back to the days of 11 best results?
(but then again, I never liked that idea to begin with)
Maths and programming I can still do, everything else... nope!
Seriously though, part of has a horrible feeling that we're not too far from "success ballast" in F1
I don't think so... I mean we've had a number of years of very close finishes. Only this year and perhaps the Brawn year weren't that close. They'll just change all the rules for next year as normal and shuffle the deck.
Maybe they'll just add a rule which says that if your surname rhymes with Phooey you can only work in F1 if you work for Ferrari
Your accent must be very different from mine I think!!
Since Alex has now given me an ear-worm I thought I'd share it with you all http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E7Ic-WAlyhA

Hong Kong Phooey?
I more meant the rhyming!
...as voiced by the chap who also voiced Jazz from the old Transformers show, who also played the old chap from "The Shining"
I can't see how the two wouldn't rhyme?
Phoo-ey and New-ey? No?
I can't imagine you saying New like Nooo. I don't say it like that at all. It's almost like 2 syllables.

Hmmmmm
sounds good to me :)
Well now we need to hear your version so we can compare

Just heard the news about Borders... wow
Autosport road trip to Germany: And here she is - Lotus Evora S. Can't wait to get the Nurburgring road trip underway bright and early tomorrow http://yfrog.com/kkgofrvj
It's rankings day today, so if anyone has any suggestions for points - plus or minus - I'm all ears :)
Kamui and his forklift... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NiBm4nOUaZw
expecting lots of pro-lotus "features" by monday then. front cover of thursday's issue will probably read "lotus are really, really back (so shut it)".
my favourite response:
davidjcornish: @NobleF1 and you're driving that from the uk to Germany? I hope your suitcase is full of spare spines.
Webber doing charity work for Leigh Adams. I think many others are involved, too.

Evening guys :)
Hurrah! I see my hosts have decided to, you know, host again so here's a little PING on quick little questions from yesterday
http://toata.co.uk/index.php/2011/07/210-quick-little-questions/
yay. although i read that as 210 quick questions!
that would be a wonderful oxymoron :)
How is everyone tonight?
Have been reading the F1 TV stuff. I can't even imagine F1 being on channel 5.
i assume it's a bernie bargaining thing. without he doesn't look like he has a plan. and the association won't hurt c5's image either.
Evening all,
I signed up to shelfari, pretty sure i missed a lot of books out, one wasnt listed on there!
Cant belive noble has done that, you would think after all the stink the headline kicked up they would lie low.
danny bahrs moneybags obviously far to tempting for some...
Surprisingly and unusually tired for no apparent reason. Just had a little snooze. I had a (slightly) early night last night too.
I agree. It won't be on 5 unless Beeb pull the rug.
Oddly the letter between x and v has broken on my keyboard.
i hear bernie is talking about a settlement to get that fixed
I think it would work for the european model of limited coverage on FTA to keep the sponsors happy, premium uninterupted coverage on Sky for the big bucks
I'm not sure if Christine's around but she may be interested in this, Miranda Hart was offered a role in Dr Who
http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/tv/s7/doctor-who/news/a330549/miranda-hart-stopped-from-taking-doctor-who-role.html
Not quite sure what I reckon about that as much as she rocks. Then again, Catherine Tate did the own show to Dr Who jump pretty well... that Moffat, he does think of some crazy things.
Although I'm not sure why she wouldn't be able to write her own show and not do an episode or two of Dr Who. I find that most silly.

That article says she's going to be in something else as well though, maybe she's not got enough time. It's silly not to let her if she wants to, cos if I were the BBC, I'd want to keep her onside.
Let's hope Bernie doesn't get offered a role in the show then. :)
Although he doesn't really need the make up for Davros...
assume they waited as long as they could.
Didnt they replace the editor recently? or did i mis-hear?
something like that. didn't pay a whole heap of attention.
I think the lotus money must flow though the whole of haymarket, from autocar to f1racing
I did hear that the last series took a very long time to write in tv terms, but that she had thought that it was a reasonable amount of time. So I wonder if the subtext of that was that they want things prepared a bit more ahead of time?
Good evening
Hurry up with your homework or you can't go out and play with the Doctor.
hello!
interesting app from emirates http://intransit.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/07/18/emirates-offers-radio-app-for-travelers/

Hello. Back from having a lovely lasagne at mum's.
IndyCar news: AJ Foyt has chosen to stick with Honda next year.
Hello everyone.
I'm editing pics and choosing which ones I want to order and I've got Silverstone practice on. Thank you DVR. I didn't get to see it when it happened.
Evening Kai!
Just watched a wonderful Geology-based show from Richard Hammond on BBC1 there on the construction of the Earth, start of a new series. Thought it was quite fascinating. Not Brian Cox level of depth understandably but just so interesting.
Watching these science based shows on the BBC makes me realise just how much I missed out on dire science lessons in school.
Brian Cox has depth? He talks in poetic soundbites. I've had deeper sandwiches!
I blame D:Rream :)
But what I mean is the fact Cox is an actual scienceman and Hammond is... well, Hammond. There's a difference in their level of knowledge for this kind of thing when one of them works for a major corporation trying to change the world with their mad experiments...
..and the other works for CERN and wrote a pop song.
Surely they both read the script. Granted, one of them may actually understand it :D
Hehehe :)
It's funny to come across pics that I have no memory of taking.
Your poor mind will take a while to recover from your trip :)
No kidding! I went out to the store for a few things and I just wasn't functioning properly.
Lesson from going out: Don't go out.
Outisde has all sorts of dangers like kerbs, horses and general palava
Apple just announced Lion is being released tomorrow
At last, the rumours can stop
And how to operate a credit card swiping machine that I've used a million times.
I seem to be in between the UK and US systems of spoken language, written language, and how things work. I get mixed up when to use S's and Z's, whether to say Cheers or Thanks, How are you? or You all right?, and if my boots are Wellies or Rain boots.

Transatlantic drift :D
Keep using them, thems the right way...
:)
My sister teaches English to Spanish kids but does it in a Dorset accent.. we've got visions of these kids walking around saying "ere'yar" instead of 'here you are'.
hehe
I get to feel dumb in 2 countries. :)
At least I know what side of the car to get into here.
Other than "rain boots" I would say all of those things. I keep going on all these courses where they tell you 95% of communication is body language and tone of voice. I think if you made up a word and said it cheerfully, no-one would think anything of it tbh.
:) True. When students come in who are learning English we all get on just fine. I just feel a big shift happening within me. Things that have been natural for my whole life aren't anymore. It's good, it's just disconcerting at times.
And I've always been very attuned to language, words and accents, so it feels weird to not know what to say automatically in a given situation.
I spend my whole day talking to people. I think I've learned to just go with whatever comes out.
yaaaaayyy!
I think in this transition I'll just go with it, too. Good idea. :)
PING of a childhood game I saw today on the way home from work that made me happy:

Two birds, one stone. The animation thing I was telling you about Language as a window into human nature
That was awesome, really well done, and very intricate. Thanks :)
Every one of those I've seen have been fab
