Good morning sidepodders! Happy Monday, even though I think we'll all agree that this is our collective least favourite day of the week. I hope you get to the end of this with a slightly perkier outlook on today.
Japan beat the USA in the Women's World Cup Football final! Barack Obama was getting very into it.
Now that the urgent news is out the way, some comedy to start?
I found a cute youtube clip. It gets scary in the middle, but don't worry, it has a happy ending.

David Mitchell has contributed some rather hilarious angry-logic about the drama going on at News of the World.
There was no F1 this week to talk about so shall we have a quick look at what else happened in the world of motorsport?
Dani Pedrosa won in Germany! He's now 74 points behind Stoner, and 59 behind titleholder Lorenzo.
Chris Atkinson won the International Rally of Whangarei in New Zealand for Proton. This is his third win from four Asia-Pacific Rally Championship starts.
The Marussia Virgin boys headed out to Sochi to get Russian fans excited about the sport.
The sun goes down on a frankly awesome weekend in Sochi. Cannot wait to come back! #Sochitour http://twitpic.com/5rls1x
AJ Riley, who races in the Continental Tire Sportscar Challenge in the US, has been doing a photo project called Life Through My iPhone. He's taken some lovely pics!
Is it time for science now?
Firstly, a note for Amid, who I met on the bus between Northampton and Silverstone. No, F1 drivers don't go fast enough to experience the relativistic Doppler effect. According to Sakon Yamamoto (to whom we need to give more geek credit. He was cool enough to talk nerdy to me while signing autographs at the MVR Weekend), they do experience a bit of the tunnel-vision associated with travelling at speed, but he remains unconvinced that it's because of a relativistic time-slowing effect.
The RadioAstron mission, conceived during Soviet Russia, launches from Kazakhstan on Monday, making the biggest telescope built thus far. The “dish” for the radio telescope will be more than 30 times Earth's diameter.

*blushes* Thank you!
Agreed :)
just tweeted you brij, should've just asked in the comments. i had no idea you were at the virgin camping, gutted we didn't meet up!
bah :(
You were there?! I'm so sad we didn't have the chance to have a drink! I had one with @F1_Cartoonz, a brief discussion with Sakon and a lengthy chat with Crofty...it would've rounded off a great weekend!
yeah, friday night with leigh: http://sidepodcast.com/post/a-very-big-house-in-the-country
i managed to miss almost everyone, so annoyed :(
So *that*'s where all the day-visitors came from after the driver visit! I wondered. I was busy being annoyed with a group of over-dressed women who seemed hell-bend on blocking my view of the P1 re-run.
*hell-bent
we were so close. doh!
The over-dressed women (one of whom looked suspiciously like a badly-dressed Trinny-or-Susannah [I can never tell them apart]) were bugging you too? I was on the chairs at the back of the tent with lookingspiffy and tenacious_sd
we were to the side, near the closed food tent. spoke to alex at the front of the tent.
Ah, I see. I'm sad I missed Alex too! I really should walk around more at these things - not that I would've recognised you anyway, given your no-faces-online policy.
yeah, that's something of an issue!
I see the sense in it - I haven't had my face on my FB profile pic for three years. My new one is me changing the tyre in the pitstop challenge yesterday (ridiculously proud of being the fastest girl on the timesheet).
did i miss something in the daily? what challenge?
I enjoyed reading this blog post by Robyn, an American F1 fan who watched the race via live feed from Speed at 7am in NYC. Cool idea.

morning everyone
Lewis and Nicole engaged..?
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2015493/Nicole-Scherzinger-Lewis-Hamilton-engaged-claims-The-Pussycat-Dolls-father.html
Oops, wireless went down without warning last night :( Sorry, that was in reference to http://twitpic.com/5rjtaq - a friend and I went for a walk around Edinburgh, and came across an old F3 car on which someone was running a pitstop challenge. I'm third overall, but the fastest girl :)
Thanks for the link, Kai! If I ever go to NYC, I shall stop by the Winery in the hopes that they'd be screening the race. I also noticed much anti-Vettel sentiment at Silverstone...'twas must unfortunate, but then I moved closer to the RBR supporters. The sea of McLaren supporters were being very obnoxious
Morning Leigh!
How's that about Hamilton and Scherzinger? I saw a tweet about it last night while I was writing the daily, but thought it was just a rumour - remember they were supposedly pregnant in Canada last year? If they are, I'll bet she's a tad annoyed with her dad for blurting it out to the press like that!
Hi Bridget,
To be honest, I never pay attention to celeb weddings / wheeling dealing tabloid preening. Sadly this story is more to do with the British press attempts to turn Hamilton into a football-type celeb (ie Wayne Rooney)
The British press is very interested in people's love lives! I suppose if one needs to garner support for a public figure, having love-drama play out in a public forum is a good way to get sympathy. However, do the people in charge of these papers realise that most F1 fans are in a slightly more high-brow demographic? Nobody I ran into at MVR Weekend had a copy of Heat, but most had subscriptions to autosport. A telling sign?
You'll also never see widespread coverage of F1 in most pubs either. Trying to wrap F1 and football together as sports in general doesn't really work.
Unfortunately, a number of drivers do not play into the papers hands, because;
a) they live abroad and as such are out of the public eye for much of the time
b) they rarely drink, therefore limited the possibility for "embarrassing" moments
bring back Kimi, bring back Kimi ...
:D
Modern day F1 drivers are not James Hunt any more.
may not be as crazy as he was but they still can go wild ... I was lucky enough to see that with my own eyes and I was unlucky to have a bottle taken away and drunk by one of them ... they are however successful in keeping all this away from public eyes unlike other celebrities
True, but not to the degree of some of the UK's football louts
I would say that by the nature of their jobs and the equipment they handle there are slightly different IQ requirements for F1 drivers and football players :-)
Just a tad
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sw8ZL_gcTSM
;)
They don't seem to understand how it all works :(
But, when they do, they occasionally stab investment bankers in the neck with wine glasses.
I'd love to know who that was! (My rule for supporting drivers is based on which ones would be most fun to go have a round with down the pub.)
This is why we support F1 and not club football, no?
There is a old story from years ago about Schumacher getting smashed at an end of season bash in Japan and making friends with a tree
OK, it was not Schumi. I am not going to name the guy but he also won the title in the red car
Hehehee
Did he go on to crash numerous rally cars, while also having a occasional spin in a NASCAR-type machine?
Hehe, I knew he danced like an idiot, but I never figured him for the type to have cuddles and chats with a tree!
Ah...I think I know who that was then ;) God bless Finland!
no comment :-)
I need to dash and run errands. Chat later!

Nicole has tweeted to say they're not engaged.
Reeeee-jected!
Take that Daily Mail !!
:)
Good afternoon world :)
Hi Marti
I'm surprised at the number of people who have pointed the engagement news out to me. I didn't realise they were that interesting. I wonder if as many will correct themselves :)
It's only interesting to the tabloids
Clearly not.
Hooray - my Spa 24 Hours pass just arrived in my e-mail box
:)
I'm sure if the celeb lives of footballers was dropped from the tabloids, people would stop noticing pretty quickly
I loves me some celebrity gossip. Don't read tabloids though, they're not really exist in this country.
Lucky you.

Bridget, so you were there when we were there? How did we miss this?? :(
Oh, I think I remember Bassano and I were trying to find a way to get in touch with you... Sorry we missed you.
Oh well, I'll just have to go back to Edinburgh? :)

I am not very good at this...
It is self hosted, yup.
Oh, then I'll have to investigate a little bit.
Ok, I've downloaded MediaWiki and a thing called MySQL. Now I must understand what I do hehehe

Villa. Wow. Now there's a name I didn't expect to see again.
hehe
Been there! Many times. :)
who??
Spanish GP2 driver from about 2-4 years back
A WTCC driver. He is not talented, it's only money and marketing.
Spanish fans don't want him (at least the comments I've read). They prefer Liuzzi to stay, because they know that he's HRT leader driver.

What do you mean?
ah... Well SQL has a number of commands to help you work with data... Say you wanted to get all of the information form the users table you would write
select * from users
So I was making a joke that you would be soon needing to get all of the information from the manual for the application.
Or rather I was attempting a joke :)

you're too kind
I didn't understand the joke, my english is too bad to catch double senses hehe
don't worry this won't make sense either but the appropriate sql joke here would be...

I fully intend to enjoy my holiday so there is no way I'm watching it if its going to be another Canada.
Let's hope Charlie gives us some racing. Cars can race in wet, faster or slower, but they can!
Thing is, if they haven't learnt from Canada I don't think there is going to be many happy people.

Yep.
I was at Barcelona's last testing day. It rained a lot, like Canada, but like 3 or 4 hours.
People started to say 'boooo' to the teams, because they didn't want to race. Alonso, in fact, left the track at 1pm, altough there were plenty of his fans at the grandstands.
Love how you pronunce 'Tabatha Valls' and 'Javier Villa'.
The whole world (including Spanish people) don't know how to pronounce the 'll' sound, which is typical from Catalonia :)
I get grief pronouncing English words, so I just hope for the best when it comes to other languages!

I bet Mallya has a daughter called like this.
HRT has published its German GP preview. They don't say anything about Alba Saiz (obviously)
who wrote it?
I tend to not be in Edinburgh over weekends (far too many tourists clogging the pavements while they take photos of everything), but I've been here (in a permanent sort of way) for about three weeks now. Next time you're up here, tweet me (@mma_brij) and let's head to Castle Arms for a wee one :)
They didn't publish author's name, but, anyway, it's funny to see that 'Alba Saiz' name still appears at HRT website. According to the web, she's still the Head of Communications
hehe
I was one of those tourists last weekend. (wow, was it only last weekend?)
Right now I'm still living in the US, but hopefully I'll be in the UK by next year to live. Then I'll take you up on that, for sure. :)
Here's my blog post that I put up really late last night.

Afternoon
Weird. Lost connection on both browsers last night, thought it was the wireless router so shut everything down
Turned out to be proxy settings in Firefox AND Safari on this machine yet I touched nothing
Hey
interesting. maybe she wrote it yesterday :)
Hehe, if you were here over Silverstone, then I definitely wasn't in town ;) I read the blog post - sounds like you had an awesome time! This city is really rewarding to people who want to wander around and find all the little hidden corners.
Thanks for the twitter contact, I'm @AndersFinn. Thanks for reading my own little corner of the world/blog.
Followed. Your own little corner of the interwebs is entertaining :)
hehe aw, thanks!
Your's certainly is, too!! You've done so many interesting things, and continue to. I'll try to keep up. :)

Thank you! I often feel like I'm going a bit stale, so it's very nice to hear that!
Good morrow to you, kind Sir!

nice!
Awesome! Did whomever you were talking to catch the reference? So few people do, I find :(

They totally missed it. The guy mentioned to me that he was having one those days where you feel like you're in a dream constantly falling and I replied 'Well at least you're not a whale right now'
He totally missed the point. But I felt happy.
I've just asked that question to my bosses, but it seems HRT hasn't said anything.
serrat was already with the team, so i'm guessing a temporary stand in.
An appropriate response would've been "Not again!" ;) It made me giggle.
BTW, who's with me: next year on Monty Python Day, we each hire someone to dress up like a slave and follow us around banging two half-coconuts together?

joe pointed out today that this is just the start: http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2011/07/18/cockpit-research-post-massa/
In addition questions must also be asked about what happens to the debris after an impact and whether using cockpits would mean more incidents in which debris was propelled over the existing debris fencing. The research programme is ongoing.
looks interesting though.
Indeed. Saw that earlier. Didn't know there was a video though. Amazing stuff.
I wouldn't mind seeing a canopy but it would change the sport. Was it Wurz/Webber where one of the cars went over the top of the other one? that was scary. Maybe the best solution is just a different material for the windshield? beats me. someone else's job.... :)
It was Wurz, I think.
Wurz/Coulthard. AUS 2007.
Anyway, it seems that F1 world doesn't like the canopy idea. http://bit.ly/q1Ub7x
I wrote that article :)
thanks.
I'm having trouble understanding this - what's this existing debris fencing?
are we talking about if debris went everywhere what would happen to it - like would it fly up into car parts?
at the circuits - if the wheel bounces over the canopy, can it bounce over the fencing?
aah. totally makes sense if you're not an idiot like me! So just put a full canopy over the crowd. problem solved.
I do love that picture. seems like theres a giant hole in the front - wouldn't that muck up his icecream?
Nah, it's to keep it cold while doing a lap at Monza hehehe

Hi folks,
This was in last week's Autosport magazine. The FIA article and video failed to mention the loose wheel ended up well over one mile away...
cause they're still investigating. these aren't findings, they are just experiments.
Exactly. There is still a long, long way to go. No point putting canopies on cars if it ends up killing a dozen spectators
do we know if it went a mile up in the air, or along the ground? how far to loose wheels normally travel when fired at that speed.
Just by judging the angle at which it hit the canopy while using my dreadfully untrained eyes, it went up surely.
agreed. but did it go up, come down and then travel, or keep travelling one down? lots of questions. do long as it travelled below the height of the catch fence then there's no issue. glad they're looking into this though.
also interested to see what the canopy can do when faced with a big-assed spring.
Don't forget Australia 2001 though. Villeneuve's loose wheel went through a marshal's flag gap and killed him. That was chest height.
Helloooooo :)
Hi Alison
true, but they must've fixed that issue? they redesigned the fences.
Not that I've ever seen. It's pretty imperative for marshal's to have a fence gap to climb out and reach stricken cars and debris.
I'm off work for 2 days. It's awesome!! :D
Nice
I've also bought myself a new dress so I clearly need a pair of new shoes to go with it. It's only right....
Well, it's only natural.
