Another Wednesday is here.
I have to say I like Wednesdays - mainly on account of them being sort of midweek, but also because they are one of the few days I don't have to run the teen somewhere, and because they are the day before bin day and I like to see how we mainly have pink bags outside when most of the street is black bags all the way…(redface)
Then there is the new reason to like today… the day I can find the US broadcast of Torchwood…. and the day before we get it here :-)
Of course the other reason I like Wednesdays, and this Wednesday in particular, is because tomorrow is Thursday, and that means practise! Who will spin, who will crash, will it be wet or dry or just damp enough to show up any moss on the track? Oh, I'm a happy soul (cough) This week practise is in Germany… But then you'll all talk about that tomorrow, and I wouldn't want to jump the gun.
What I do want to muse on is food. Specifically the food you like to eat in front of the race (as opposed to the Food Race). So far I gather that Breakfast, and especially Bacon and Eggs and Sausages, washed down with hot/cold beverage of choice, is the main option. Although whether that is by accident, or simply because some on you (you know who you are) don't bother to get up until just before the race at the weekend. Hmmmm?
In this house we have been known to eat nachos, but usually its whatever is to hand (scones, jam, cream, crisps, cheesy chips….) Oh and RBMs… I suppose you'd like a link to those? Only if you promise to at least attempt to bake them. And eat them on Sunday? There you go. You might want to listen to this again as well…

I think I food poisoned myself :(
Lesson: dont buy food when you are half dead after the gym
Nick if you get sick 2 hours after eating food, it isn't that food that made you sick!!
3 hours,
I know it was the food
Hmmmm

The irony that both teams wish their drivers were driving different cars :)
I also quite enjoyed this from Nabil Jeffri:

Ops! Sorry for the last tweet,it was supposed to sound like this,I think I ate like a horse! :p

This week I will mostly be driving this!! http://yfrog.com/ke8myjuj
The conversation on the debrief thread has got Shania Twain's That don't impress me much stuck in my head...
And I blame the rate the race feature for this ;)
Ooh, good song.
how would ou rate it out of 10? ;)
you not ou...
one handed typing is hard
don't get me wrong, i think it's alright...
You must be joking, right?

for what it's worth my guess is that geb might have meant the convince use of the word impress rather than the normal one... as in "i would like impress upon you the following point".
Awwwww... F2 racer Alex Brundle is graduating today from Nottingham Uni with a 2:1 - one thinks Marty is a proud daddy today
:)
He even hashtagged it!

Sounds like he's commentating on the ceremony
Interesting.
Aha! Shelfari can import my book list. I can't believe ive read so much terry pratchet and robert rankin. Maybe I should make my list private!
ooooh, gpudate.net lost her then. interesting.
No need to go private. My shelf is full of Pratchett and I'm now adding my Rankin (I love his titles and should read more)
Uploading my Kindle books was easy, now I'm going through my actual bookshelf. I need to get around to re-purchasing these digitally so I can get rid of the clutter :)
Nooo, not private. I have only read one Pratchett and people's love for it makes me want to read more. I have not heard of Rankin. I shall investigate.
I probably should have done it that way round :)
I was looking at my ibooks and thinking "i wonder if i should buy physical copies of these to fill out my bookshelf" :D
the only book I own so far in both paper and Kindle is A Short History of Nearly Everything and that still hasn't helped me finish it. Why can't I finish it, it's so good!
nooo physical is evil, evil I tell you.
One of the reasons I don't really use Shelfari is because I'm too shy to reveal to the world just how very much of a Tolkien geek I am. Literally 5kgs of my luggage moving to the UK was Tolkien books :( The Frencie feels the need to take the mickey on a regular basis.
Shelfari?
It's a good idea :)

I don't think Sidepodcast Update is working :D
Cheers, I'll have a look at lunch
:)
you just like that I bought your book 3 times :D
It looks good though!
Although now i have my games on a shelf all my visitors think im a library
Heheh.
Amy... I wonder if this will help you?
http://www.brendonwilson.com/blog/tag/barcode-scanner/
noooo!
I just get the feeling "people will think I'm an idiot when they see what I read"? :-)
:)
I think reading at all moves you out of the idiot potential category.
oooh that'd be fab if I had more books but I actually don't own that many, I was always a library person as "you read too fast to get your moneys worth" is what my dad always told me when I bought purchased books home :)
Could possibly help some others here though!
My iPhone had an app for that ;-)
which app? compatible with shelfari?
i searched the app store and found nothing :D
No it was before I knew of shelfari. I was somethi associated with book crawler. Just scanned the isbn straight in.
....pic2shop
Well this could be the biggest F1 news of the week:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-14213249
It would be nice to have a shelfari for games :)
Im not that big on talking about books, i just like to read them a lot :)
Why does every story about bernie have to have a photo of him looking like a pirate?
Well part of it is to be able to find recommendations better I think... As in this person also read and liked all of these books you read and liked so chances are you'll like this book that you don't know about yet.
Random fact i didnt know:
Rupert Murdochs mother is alive at 102 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elisabeth_Murdoch_(philanthropist)
Which is what I'm hoping for when I get readers block
hehe, my shelf of read books (even the ones i am reading now) are quite unconnected http://www.shelfari.com/twiger
I asked a photographer if there is a special reason why every picture of bernie makes him look like a pirate.
He replied...
...
...
...
...
...
...
No they just arrrrrrrre.
Mmmm, Michael Crichton.
:D
They don't look that unconnected to me... But there you go :)
hehe, it might be better if they were in order, i jump from dragons to biographies of Jay Gould
...that was a great book BTW :)
Dragon Jumping with Jay Gould?
For someone that doesn't like talking about books, you're doing a good job :)
Now that could be your next novel!
I think i have an aversion to radio and tv shows where they talk about books, its made me not want to be like those people!
Also the discussions you have about books at school used to ruin books i enjoyed reading before we talked about them
Oh yes. I have no discussion ideas that involve: "Why do you think they chose to use that word there?" or anything like that :)
It makes me want to read more so I can add more to my shelf. But I can't. I have Joe to edit.
I never had that problem with books but I certainly did with movies :)
Ha! I can't believe you read as much as you do.
:)
Or, "what does the writers descriptive passage on a knife and fork say about this characters love life"
I will try and join in :)
How many books do people read on average? per whatever unit makes sense for you?
Just curious not trying to judge or anything.
I can tell you this: You’ve read 14 books this year. Last year you read 25 books, so you’re ahead of your pace.
Um. More units than me normally? :-)
Oooh that's a neat feature :)
The stats page is completely mental: http://www.shelfari.com/mrschristine/stats
I left uni about 4 years ago, since then i have read about 100 books, so 25 a year, about 2 per month.
This isnt uniform though, i go though patches where i will go though a book every 2 days.
One of the ones i am reading i have been going though for 2 years
Looks like you need to fix the page count for some first editions :)
Yes. I'll get right on that.
since my Kindle got its update to add categories I have added 48 books into the 'finished' category. Most of them were the aforementioned free rubbish though sadly.
:(
I read about a book a week, except for some very long books which take two weeks I guess... So that probably accounts for about 30 books a year. And then when I'm on holiday I usually read a book every day, although if they are mega long it can take 2 or 3 days. So my guess is that I probably read about 50 books a year. Which now I think about it seems like quite a lot :)
Cripes
I love this: @joesaward have you seen the tweet from sidepodcast that Aldo Costa has left Ferrari rather than take the sideways move offered to him?
http://twitter.com/sinha_j/status/93633306670796800
Mr C is telling Joe news now :)
Although when people say things to me, "how do you seem to know so much about everything" I think the answer is pretty much I read a lot and am a swot ;)
Mr C NEWS
reading is awesome :D
i didn't do nuffink.
By the way I would like to point out that I "read" books in a combination of "reading" and "listening" which is how I get the number up that high.
Aha!
Audible strikes again
I think there's a coupon code around here somewhere...
That will get you started on the Gold account where you'll get one book a month.
I think I owe Leo any audible account I get ;-)
That's what I meant :) That's the code I know :)

Oooh, newjoe :)
A bit late to the show but is there a link somehwere where theBBC post-Silverstone forum can be accessed? You think there'd be one in the Videos section on BBC's site really. Even Jake didn't mention it in his blog this time.
I would imagine it's no longer on iPlayer because it's over a week since broadcast. Someone has uploaded it to YouTube here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=azKvq1DqoaQ (Part 1) but I haven't watched this so I don't know how good/bad it is.
In the first year the red button stuff was on the sport website.
Some bright spark decided to put it on iplayer so it disappears after a week!
uh oh, the run melbourne people have sent me a link to photos of me. I didn't want there to be photos of me! I get the impression all 20,000 participants are trying to look at themselves though as the website won't load.
Thanks for the link, quality's great.
Yeah, the forum doesn't get good promotion unfortunately.

Wow - the Ford Transit Van Trophy has its own Facebook page

I was just reading the Daily that's all
Did everyone else know there is a Mr Giggle app for the iPhone? I would like to point out that I in no way endorse this product :)
Maybe I should sue 'em ;)
I think it's a follow on from last week's daily: http://sidepodcast.com/post/daily-13th-july-2011
The idea being, I'd talk about Germany but we're not quite there yet.
I was suprised team lotus notes was out so early,
Is that Tremayyne Snr on page 15 at karuns karting thing? http://www.teamlotus.co.uk/media/494893/germany.pdf
Okay... so it's not me going mad then?
That's the main thing.
Actually, you're still going mad.
Well, I can't vouch for that :)
I saw that yesterday
It seems to be the thing to do. Go ahead :)
Well as long as I'm clear on the fact I can deal with it. It's the uncertainty that's really maddening...
Don't worry - our brand of madness is only occasionally peppered with uncertainty and doubt.
I wonder if we could have convinced you it was tomorrow.
Are you sure? :-P
Or yesterday even? Perhaps we are in Monaco after all...?
:)
Certainly, but then again, I wrote this particular madness
Tomorrow is definitely tomorrow, of that I'm sure
Unless.............
Tomorrow is Friday. If you're in NZ.
but today is still Wednesday even if you're in NZ. the daily says so.
the daily lies
Treason!
not used to seeing that sentence with the word 'mail' missing from the middle

Afternoon :)
Ooooh Ethernet on the monitor... Lovely for docking... lovely...

Wow - is Adam Carroll looking to break a record? He'll be competing in GP2 this weekend for Super Nova
ping! Overtaking: So Far In 2011… http://www.vivaf1.com/blog/?p=7602
surprising move... is he not getting anywhere states side?
Long story. Essentially, he was only given two races last year with Andretti Autosport as their fifth driver
but that seemed to be where his long term ambitions were heading, no?
Not sure. Those two drives were more because of something that Carroll did while in A1GP
seem to remember him saying something about wanting to concentrate on getting into indy
I'm not sure how much of that was for the Indy PR though tbh
maybe
The White MacBook is no more
all through a thunderbolt cable?? woah.
lion is downloading, checking out new mac stuff. picked a good day for a short day :)
you can now rent textbooks on Kindle.
It's enough to make me want to go back to uni*
*not really. no way in hell.
is it america only, like other renting?
probably *kicks amazon*
seems like they're just cheaper to buy via kindle anyhow.
so students rioted over they're handouts being stopped (note: i actually never learned what the argument was, i could be way off here), and then amazon go slash the price of education in a heartbeat.
yay for technology.
i must do more overtime, this is the most beautiful computer i ever did see:
http://www.apple.com/macmini/design.html
need!!
mmmm little. I like.
Mac mini is designed without an optical disc drive. Because these days, you don’t need one.
*huuuuuugs steve*
A what now?
sometimes i accidentally open mine when i pick up my laptop. its so annoying i'd like to glue it closed.
dvd/cd-rom drive. those silly things that spin round and round and make a lot of noise.
Ohhh, is that what they're called? D'oh.
I agree, but he doesn't seem to belive it himself, why is there one in the mac book pro?
i would imagine it was the last ever redesign to feature one. i recall saying it at the time. essentially, because lion wasn't out. now it is, the dvd is dead.
Aha,
Hopefully cables will be next up :)
i likes cables. they're neither noisy, nor prone to skipping :)
They get tangled, you have to carry them and i trip over them and they fall out :)
#wirelessplease
F1Minute ping: http://www.f1minute.com/news/pirelli-ponder-the-shape-of-their-tyres
surely steve has that cover with the ipad?
*covered.
Why not have it with your laptop too.
put it on the desk and it charges, once its powered up its syncs to your phone/tablet & with a couple of clicks it connects to a monitor...
No need for a single cable :)
how does the signal get to the screen from the laptop?
Wireless AV
You can already get them, but you need a seperate transmitter at least.
I havent seen anyone make a laptop with one built in yet
ahh, i guess the ipad2 does that to the tv. it's a bit laggy though. probs to early to rely on it for your desktop.
The LG LCD we have in the office has it, but it needs a transmission unit i havent convinced them to buy yet. :)
Trying to fina a wireless webcam as step 1, which i guess is a similar principle
why not facetime? same thing, surely.
this tiny ickle Air is more powerful than the laptop we started sidepodcast with (and that i threw wine all over), and it's maybe a third of the size: http://www.apple.com/macbookair/
Evening all.
You know, only last week, as I sat in the £25-a-night Travelodge room that smelled of wet dog, I was trying to play Rome: Total War and growing infuriated with the constant disc-spinning and consequent heat build-up. Perhaps Steve found himself in a similar scenario and declared a fatwah on the hateful optical disc?
Mind you, were I to get a Macbook air I'd probably have to pay for the game all over again, wouldn't I? World domination was much easier in Genghis Khan's time.
not sure i follow,
the webcam needs to sit on the tv, when we go in there for a meeting with some people overseas we want to hook it up to whoever ha a laptop so we can use skype/conference software.
The table is quite a long way from the tv though so i think wireless will be better than usb extensions.
Apple also dont offer facetime here
Everyone should have one of these and everyone can. Just $1000. PAH!
In other news, apols to anyone I've goaded on Twitter today. I was bored.
hehehehe. well yes. but don't ask what i paid for the laptop i threw wine over though... eh?
As soon as my Macbook is past its HMRC-enforced depreciation age, off it shall duly toddle...
Saves on the hatefulness of HD failure, too.
i enjoyed it. up till the point someone started swearing about it and i gave up :)
I was enjoying it too,
must have missed the swearing and fun though :(
i'm laughing at christine who's sitting on the floor to loose at monopoly, cause the power lead doesn't reach :)
ahhhhh. ok.
i'd just put an iphone onto of the tv and do it that way. but i didn't know it was country specific.
Cables! *shakes fist*
Wireless power would solve this problem! :)
so would an extension lead...

ooh, ta.
Do they use the term 'cowboy builders' in texas?
heheheheh! #fail
Never heard it. Who knows. I wouldn't be surprised.
Yea, well, I lost. Thanks for that. It cheats.
I wonder why I have zero intention of going to that race? It's so strange. You'd think I'd be all excited and ready to go.
I don't think I can make it because of the timing of it, but I have to double check that.
Did you guys see the fake apple store in china? http://htl.li/5IMwo
As in.. not the products, the actual store is fake
if you're a mac user, safari 5.1 released today, will let you view the fancy rankings graphs: http://sidepodcast.com/rankings
just as IE and Chrome users have been able to do since xmas...
Hello. Sounds like my friend who runs the GP holiday company is having trouble with Austin.. as he says on FB:
Very surprised to find the new home of the US Grand Prix to be both unhelpful and discourteous........most un-American, and rather unprofessional. Hmm, does not bode well for Austin methinks, more to report from my visit there Friday & Saturday.
I'm flying into Austin Friday morning and as of now have no appointment with the circuit in spite of 3 voicemails, 2 emails and leaving a couple of messages. Oh, they don't divulge the location of their offices so I can go there either - it isn't like I am trying to spend a six figure sum by bringing a load of customers to them or anything though......
forward that to statesman on twitter.
Enjoy a little something from the sidepodcast.com back catalogue.

I posted the Twitter address on his wall, left the onus on him.
without breaking the NDA because I have seen it reported elsewhere... Apple TV does have wireless full screen over the air mirroring in iOS5
oooh iPad Monopoly? I like that game a bit toooooo much!
I also have lots of Pratchett. I want to read them again but in the right order this time, and filling in the gaps.
I have lost twice and I am proper sulking.

there's a cool video running now about the space shuttle if anyone's interested

landing is in 16 hours give or take
ooh, thanks. :)
it's gone into the 1980s mode now...and it feels it ;)
I'll keep a look out for the leg warmers.
dear me
I feel like I'm in a museum - it's that long slow boring voice ;) The start of the video was probably made in the last few years - tracing how all the parts are built in different parts of the country and how its not NASA that makes the shuttle, "it's America"
Evening all
What was the download time for you? Just starting mine now
1hr, wouldn't install on the mini cause it's only got 1gb. christine's trying it now.
Of RAM?
yup.
I'm a quarter of the way through the download but VM's traffic management will kick in very soon and kneecap my d'l speed :(
Don't want to worry you but this was lou's tweet http://twitpic.com/5t2ruy
11 DAYS!!
Should add Lou's internet is pretty shocking though, although it's come down to 11 hours now I believe
we downloaded three copies in three hours. i'm never moving to kent.
Can download super fast from any Apple Store. They've set up servers especially. She should head to Bluewater
The internet here is very expensive, but one thing i do like is that they place no limit at all on your usuage
Just who you communicate with ;)
but no voip?
watching over christine's shoulder:
- no immediate issues
- love fullscreen apps
- love versions
not legally, not sure what they are going to do now skype is part of facebook
stuff like xbox live has never been effected. their main issiue is PC to phone,
i would call that a limit on your usage. but i know what you meant really ;)
I am tweeting geeky stuff. Goooo me!
this is probably the first time I've been massively jealous of those with macs...
I know of a lovely iMac for sale, one careful owner ;)
never known an OS upgrade go so smoothly.
New start button is deffo my favourite bit.
the question is, why is it being sold? :p
I had no issues going to Snow Leopard
Cos I bought a bigger one
Good reason. but alas I can't be spending money I don't have, even if its a shiny iMac ;)
I tried to fix a problem with my bosses macbook air, i was so confused after 20 mins he decided to buy a new one!
our printer hasn't printed correctly since moving to snowy. only odd numbered pages. not fixed in lion, but also no worse.
I've heard of those, for that Treeware UI stuff :)
Wow, didnt have you guys down as 'printers' :)
I was jealous but now I can join in too, it's really good
sadly, you can't make apps for the app store without one.
true story, you have to print and post things to apple.
:)
awwwww!
Wow!
there was an apple involved in there too but it disappeared...
...into my tummy.
not apple's fault i should add. something do with pres. obama and his countries IRS thing. #nopoliticsdontblamesteve
Publishing a book is similar on the form-printing front.
print may be dead... but printers are not.
especially with 3d printing coming ;)
Since I installed Snow Leopard I have issues with thumbnail previews. Some show up on a page but not all, and it takes a lot longer.
ahh, yeah i have issues with that. and files opening in the wrong app.
Glad to hear it's not just me, but not happy it happens at all. Will Lion fix this?
pass.
He says yes, yes he will.
(if only it was this easy)
I have no idea what you guys are talking about, but ok. :)
I asked Lion for you ;)
