Happy Birthday Christine!

Do join me in wishing a very happy birthday to Christine!

I'm sure the ideal birthday present would be to install a Kindle app of some kind and buy her new book. I was going to do it yesterday but I got distracted by reading all the blog posts I'm about to link (and, er, Alan Sugar), so that makes it your fault. How could you.

Light Reading

Here is some further light reading..

With the FIA at last confirming the final final final 2011 Calendar, returning the Indian GP to the original date, here is a post discussing the forthcoming 21-race (or 20) calendar next season. I have a feeling there have been a few posts about this now, or we've just discussed it a bit, but it is worth revisiting often because I'm sure somewhere there are people with influence being fed information on what F1 sites are saying and they need to know 21 is too many!

Lou took some great shots of Andy Murray at the tennis on Monday.

Someone stole a drift racing car from Santa Pod raceway and drove it on the M25! The video may be UK only but I'm not sure.

Jackie has returned to blogging! This one is about performance enhancing drugs in motorsport, do give it a read.

Speaking of returns, RG has brought us an update to the New Teams Championship after putting it on hiatus since the end of last year. It is interesting to see how things have moved on after 7 races of the new season. Do also have a look at his predictions for the US Open.

If like me you have a Wordpress.com blog, Christine found that you can now use a new feature called 'Custom Design' which makes font-choice much easier and allows you to change the CSS design. It does cost a small fee though. There's a free sampler which I intend to try tonight!

I do love a good motorsport mashup, people and cars appearing in someone else's world. That's why I like car swaps and McLaren are doing well at them at the moment. First it was Jenson Button trying a V8 Supercar at Bathurst, now Lewis Hamilton has tried a NASCAR Cup car at Watkins Glen.. on the IndyCar layout. Here's a great summary and (amateur) video from SB Nation's Jeff Gluck. You can also see Speed's coverage here (use links on the sides for more). Great to hear they enjoyed it so much, and the enjoyed the track too! Shame about the weather.

Weekend Racing

After the stunning amount of action last weekend I don't know if you want to watch any more this week, but if you do you could take in any of these:

  • IndyCar - Milwaukee Mile
  • WRC - Acropolis Rally
  • DTM - EuroSpeedway Lausitz (road course version)
  • WTCC - Brno
  • BTCC - Croft
  • NASCAR Cup (& Nationwide Series) - Michigan
  • FRenault 3.5 - Nurburgring
  • World Superbike - Motorland Aragon
  • V8 Supercar - Hidden Valley

Recommended Race of the Week: I do love the Milwaukee Mile. Don't tune in expecting it to be your usual-shaped oval with the usual sort of racing. It races just like a road course but is small with a bumpy surface and a lot of traffic to negotiate. The drivers have to really wrestle and work hard here. For an oval it has hardly any banking to it so it is very traditional in that regard. They don't make them like this any more.

Note: If there are any of you who last weekend, like me, bought a one-month Eurosport Player subscription to watch Le Mans, if you want to make the most of it before it expires you'll find WTCC, FR3.5 and Superbikes on their channels this weekend. The WTCC races are barely half an hour each. #speedsporting

By the way, don't forget it is Fathers Day on Sunday, at least in the UK but I presume elsewhere too.

Okay that's Thursday sorted, onwards!

Aus GP Corp tooting their horn about hosting the Senna premiere, all comments on Facebook are negative because no one really cares about Australian "celebrities" getting to see a movie :D

I'd be surprised if more than 20% of attendees even know who he was.

I'm sure all premieres everywhere around the world are like that though.

but Flav cost them the 08 drivers championship, or at least that is what they went on about at the time. It would require a massive u-turn on what they said about crashgate.

IIRC, team principals now have licenses too (similar to drivers). That would play against Flav.

  • F1Wolf16/06/2011 at 10:08

Oh, Joe. You stoke the fire...

well, there has been similar article on Autosport web for few days. main difference is Autosport article suggests Massa will stay put in Ferrari in 2012 and as all the other drivers in top teams (bar Webber) have contracts for next season. as a result they do not expect much movement in the top teams next season but a lot of changes in 2013

but switching teams for 2013 will be tricky. if all the new regulations will be in place the cars will be brand new, situation not much different from 2009 season - and that was when the order got pretty shaken up ... moving to team that is better now may be a move in wrong direction for 2013 ... who knows ...

  • Alex Andronov16/06/2011 at 10:21

i can't imagine what flav can bring to ferrari, unless it's a stepping stone to bernie's job.

Oooh... I'll do a GMM style conspiracy theory... I can exclusively reveal (that I just made up) that sources are saying that the only reason Ferrari didn't object to Mike Coughlan's return was to sure up support for Flav's return.

Good point... Mr Wolf... I would say that when the regulations change most teams struggle to deal with it except McLaren... They seem, for the last 5-10 years, the most consistant at improving their car during the season.

  • Nick16/06/2011 at 11:12

I dont think ferrari can afford to leave F1, so i would back renault

Also the ferrari route effectivly closes the door to other car companies coming in, the renault one opens it up wider.

Mclaren would probably like to build there own engine so i would guess they would like a new formula to start on equal terms

  • Nick16/06/2011 at 11:12

  • F1Wolf16/06/2011 at 11:14

true, but ... there is this thing about new Concorde and there will be new threats about breakaways if things do not go certain way. at the end F1 needs Ferrari and Ferrari needs F1 so they will come to some solution. If that solution is not to Renault liking I doubt anyone will beg them to stay

my problem with his quotes are, he says they've halved costs, on what? the current engines which have been the same(ish) since 2007? new engines are gonna be costly.

  • F1Wolf16/06/2011 at 11:26

no, I think they mean Renault as a company halved their cost of being in F1. they sold the team, they are now only an engine supplier

  • Liss16/06/2011 at 11:28

Defo.........quiet cars live can be very disappointing....ie watching the BTCC....great racing but lame noise.

my problem with his quotes are, he says they've halved costs, on what? the current engines which have been the same(ish) since 2007? new engines are gonna be costly.

Dont forget they were essentialy redesigning a lot of the engine each season untill they were equalised. Doing it once every 5 years, albeit on a bigger scale isnt too unreasonable.

I would much rather they spent the money on something more high tech like the new engines than the 32nd variation of front wing endplates

  • James16/06/2011 at 11:31

no, I think they mean Renault as a company halved their cost of being in F1. they sold the team, they are now only an engine supplier

That is going to be the biggest problem, Renault approach this in a totally different way to Ferrari and Mercedes as their commitments to F1 are different. Also what they think is road car relevant differs as well, they all build different cars.

Or proper hybrid engines as opposed to the nonsense "green" get-out clause that is KERS

Bruno has ben doing the simulator work too, so maybe he might bring something else to it. Who knows? Hispania was hardly a great judge of talent last year.

I'm afraid you'll have to ask Eric about that one. It's something that could be said to all the top teams - why isn't Bianchi in at Ferrari during FP1, Bird at Mercedes, Bottas at Williams?

  • RubberGoat16/06/2011 at 13:38

And you really think Renault are not going to put Bruno in that car for Brazil?

  • F1Wolf16/06/2011 at 13:38

not sure from what runway did that Heidfeld Senna rumour take off. but there was article somewhere few days ago (autosport ?) kind of comparing the time line of Kubica's recovery and the need for Renault to know if he will or will not be able to race again. And the two were not exactly perfect match. They may not want to look for long term replacement for Kubica but they just don't know if one will be needed. So with Heidfeld not doing better that Petrov the team may want to see what Senna can do.

  • Leigh O'Gorman16/06/2011 at 13:40

That was very vague and can be interpreted many ways, I suspect the 'ready' was that he could replace Checo for that race. In my eyes though he isn't ready for F1.

If he has an exam, he has an exam. Is it worth pulling someone out of school for a race, especially if they're not ready to the top level yet?

Not saying he should have raced, but it certainly seemed like he didn't know what was going on at all. Which seems unfair. Perhaps I have that totally wrong.

I know having a backup plan is always a good thing but it almost seems like admitting defeat before you've even got started.

That's always been my thought too, especially when a driver is doing something completely unconnected to their sport.

Motorsport studies or engineering I can kind of understand, but I always wonder the direction of drivers studying outside that sphere

  • Leigh O'Gorman16/06/2011 at 15:35

Sadly a lack of car with circuits in the middle of nowhere make getting there / somewhere to stay, etc... just too difficult.

For example, if I had a car and was going to Spa, I could stay in Liege and drive the 50 km to the circuit no problem.

I don't fancy a repeat of my Oulton Park expedition where I had to walk roadside along speeding traffic on bendy country roads for 4 miles.

    That scared me silly.

if you just need one to get to a circuit for a weekend rental shouldn't be tooooo bad.

Great post. Many more industries still to come, I suppose.

Great post. Many more industries still to come, I suppose.

I was shocked to read the link to the chef who was saying people shouldn't take photos of the food because without the right lighting it looks awful

I almost always take pictures of my food when I'm out, normally because i'm enjoying it and want to show the comments. I'm pretty sure no one has ever said 'oh my that looks horrible, I'd never go there' because of one of them :)

Why does butter have it's own plate?

  • Mr C16/06/2011 at 17:38

Why does butter have it's own plate?

    *shrugs*

an ipad is better use of table space any day.

  • Steven Roy16/06/2011 at 17:38

Why does butter have it's own plate?

Because it sticks to the table cloth if it doesn't have one.

    Evening all

I watched as a man at an adjoining table for four worked away for the entire meal on his laptop. It may have been acceptable conduct in a cafe but surely not at serious, sophisticated establishment.

    i'm not surprised we don't.

  • Steven Roy16/06/2011 at 18:02

i don't see food as art. i see it as sustenance.

Most people do. And most people don't have loads of free time to just sit and eat so they read or check their phone or laptop

  • Alison16/06/2011 at 18:02

i don't see food as art. i see it as sustenance.

Exactly. Somewhere in that article he asks "why are you here?" It's like, to have my dinner....

  • Bassano16/06/2011 at 18:06

i don't see food as art. i see it as sustenance.

    Can't it be both?

  • Bassano16/06/2011 at 18:07

  • Mr C16/06/2011 at 18:07

not to me, i don't have time to admire a plate of food. maybe when i retire i guess it could be.

  • Bassano16/06/2011 at 18:07

Exactly. Somewhere in that article he asks "why are you here?" It's like, to have my dinner....

But in a restaurant such as the one from the article, the patrons aren't just looking for 'dinner'

  • Mr C16/06/2011 at 18:08

    Not aesthetics, taste

  • Alison16/06/2011 at 18:09

    Well clearly they are!!

  • Mr C16/06/2011 at 18:09

    Not aesthetics, taste

err. no compute sorry. i eat food so that i don't die, i don't think i've ever eaten to appreciate the taste. but then i'm a busy person.

  • Steven Roy16/06/2011 at 18:09

    Can't it be both?

Yes but the motivation for people tends to be one or other. Either people are eating because it is eating time and they just want to get it done or they want to spend the whole evening eating arty food and more likely in many cases to be seen eating at an arty restaurant

  • Mr C16/06/2011 at 18:09

    Well clearly they are!!

    :)

  • Bassano16/06/2011 at 18:10

    Well clearly they are!!

No, they are buying into a higher experience. Just dinner can be had from Burger King

  • Bassano16/06/2011 at 18:11

  • Bassano16/06/2011 at 18:16

    not really wow, is it?

    It is for me, honestly

I hate it when I go out for a meal that ends up being bland and uninteresting. When asked, I can usually describe it as 'just food' which sounds odd :D

  • Mr C16/06/2011 at 18:17

Well if I had more money than sense I might go splash it around on tasty food. But tbh if I ever earned enough to afford it, I'd probably be spending half the evening on my laptop too....

  • Lukeh16/06/2011 at 18:17

    erm?

Hunger meter drops, eat food, hunger meter rises. Simples.

  • Mr C16/06/2011 at 18:18

    It is for me, honestly

fair enough. i eat out to be sociable. what i eat is mostly irrelevant. and taking pics for the comments is part of the fun. chefs be damned.

  • Alison16/06/2011 at 18:18

    not really wow, is it?

I'm jealous!! I'd be about 2 stone lighter if I never ate because things tasted nice.

  • Bassano16/06/2011 at 18:18

Well if I had more money than sense I might go splash it around on tasty food. But tbh if I ever earned enough to afford it, I'd probably be spending half the evening on my laptop too....

That's fine, I'm the same. But when I eat out and it's not a 'grab and go' moment, I want it to be pleasurable. It doesn't have to cost the earth, you just have to avoid the chains in most cases

  • Mr C16/06/2011 at 18:18

Hunger meter drops, eat food, hunger meter rises. Simples.

  • Christine16/06/2011 at 18:27

Not cake, no. We keep racking up things to celebrate. App, woo! Book, ace! Birthday, yay!

But we're talking to Joe tonight, which bumps our podcast to tomorrow and that bumps other things to the weekend, and so on.

At this rate, it'll have to be some kind of über-celebration.

  • Bassano16/06/2011 at 18:27

it's red, pink, or white to me :)

I think we need to do a blind taste test :D

  • Mr C16/06/2011 at 18:27

I was chatting about this today and how I disagreed with the SC start.

My colleagues point was 'what better way to clear standing water than 24 F1 cars'

Couldn't disagree but there should be a better method available

  • Steven Roy16/06/2011 at 19:01

I have no objection to them running 5 laps behind the safety car to clear the water then having a grid start.

MotorSport have copied Bassano by posting a podcast about the Senna movie. I haven't heard it yet so I have no idea if it is any good or not but I know a lot of people are interested in the movie

Was the owners fault though as he was spotting my car door. I've bought him a pint, he seems consoled by me showing him a clip of what Mcnish did to his...

    Night Lukeh

  • Mr C16/06/2011 at 21:49

    What a co-incidence

    a) if it was a night they organised, why did they give bassano permission to use it?

    b) if it was a night they organised, why haven't they got perfect audio??

  • Steven Roy16/06/2011 at 21:51

    b) if it was a night they organised, why haven't they got perfect audio??

Their audio is not great at the best of time

    c) Why did it take them so long to put it up?

Maybe they heard Bassano's and thought they could generate some traffic.

  • Bassano16/06/2011 at 21:55

No, just they date they quoted which could've been earlier on in the evening

The press officer said in his email they have been blown away by the fans and critics' response. It's clear that this is being done on a fairly meagre budget so all the publicity helps to generate buzz
