Hello Wednesday, it’s Gavin writing the daily for you yet again. But it's not any old Wednesday - it's Christine's birthday today!

So Happy Birthday Christine, hope you have a Francktastic day ;)

What's been in the news lately?

  • In F1 news, it's been a bit of a quiet day, but there have been a few stories worth mentioning. The first is the news that Mercedes are not giving up on their 2010 car. Or their drivers, it seems...
  • Korea's track construction is on schedule. Well that's nice. Let's just hope that there will be a Korea when the raceday comes...
  • James Allen over-analyses a Victory Photo of the McLaren team, taken by his mate Darren Heath. I think it's a bit of a fluffy piece and you can't read too much into it. What about you?
  • Finally, the man from Del Monte (thanks Pat) says that the F1 race in Montreal was a success and that it caters to "...a more traditional market" of F1 fans. What, like normal people who like decent racing in a place where there's an atmosphere and passionate fans?
  • In sportscar news, it seems that both Anthony Davidson and Radio Le Mans are trying to clear the air over the incident with Oliver Gavin's Corvette at Le Mans. Anthony notes "...I hear the radio commentator here was a bit harsh on me..." - Yeah, I think he was. Check out this funny pic and be sure to tune into Midweek Motorsport at the usual time tonight as Ant will be appearing live on the show. I for one will be very interested to hear how that one goes!
  • In World Cup news, New Zealand managed a last minute goal to scrape a heroic draw with Slovakia, F1Wolf's team. Yay to the All Whites! In the other games, the Ivory Coast and Portugal game was a snooze, while Brazil vs. North Korea surprised us all - scoring near the end of a tight match where Brazil 'only' won 2-1. Have we seen the shock of the tournament already?

Well that's all from me - lots of football to look forward to today, which there will be a breakout thread for later on. Remember to check out Soccernet for awesome live stats and other useful info. Have a wonderful day and see you in the comments!

did they say if it supports video?

I didn't ask but I've read that it'll import pics & vids from a root folder named DCIM on an external

be v.interested to find out. if it does, there's no reason not to hope for imovie on the ipad, right?

(don't blame me bassano suggested it)

I silly enough to miss out on the official apple case so the second the camera kits came in, I bought it. Haven't used it though :)

that is cool. it doesn't mean imovie will just work though. i have iphone only apps that don't work on the touch and don't work on the ipad. presumably imovie will be the same?

    Maybe

I haven't had an App not work on the iPad yet

We'll see when iOS comes in the Autumn

  • Jeremy15/06/2010 at 23:50

the apple one looks perfect to me because I wouldn't be taking the ipad out to put on a dock. I have a belkin folio one that is classy but doesn't stand the ipad up very well

  • Bassano15/06/2010 at 23:51

that is cool. it doesn't mean imovie will just work though.

I suspect the chipset will be almost exactly the same, it just depends on what it wants to edit. I hear you can't export to desktop iMovie

I have no idea what ACO rules are on protests. Don't know when a protest has to be lodged.

I noticed the smoke during the race but didn't know it was illegal. THey are diesels and diesels produce black smoke

this will be interesting... and kind of ironic on Audi. They would get more bad press by winning and being disqualified than if Peugeot had won and both were disqualified... :P

  • Bassano16/06/2010 at 00:50

this will be interesting... and kind of ironic on Audi. They would get more bad press by winning and being disqualified than if Peugeot had won and both were disqualified... :P

I can't imagine the engine/exhausts on the Audis and Peugeots were any different this year to the last year or two. I would be amazed now if a protest held up.

Audi have had all the immediate post event publicity so any disqualification would get a lot less coverage and have a lot less effect.

Yes I agreed with the idea that meet up the night before driving might be a bit much. Location is The Southerner. Time is not chosen! Wear a suit and tie ;)

I have no idea what ACO rules are on protests. Don't know when a protest has to be lodged.

the rules at le mans' webpage only say:

29.2 - Protests and Appeals : shall be lodged in accordance with the

International Sporting Code, together with a fee

are the same rules and timeframes than for F1? then probably there won't be any problem for audi.

  • Steven Roy16/06/2010 at 01:02

are the same rules and timeframes than for F1? then probably there won't be any problem for audi.

Not sure what the rules are.

  • Amy16/06/2010 at 01:03

In that case any clothes will be fine

  • guille230616/06/2010 at 01:03

I can't imagine the engine/exhausts on the Audis and Peugeots were any different this year to the last year or two. I would be amazed now if a protest held up.

maybe nobody check it last year. now they know for next year...

Audi have had all the immediate post event publicity so any disqualification would get a lot less coverage and have a lot less effect.

mmmm... perhaps. but I still think that an 'Audi break the rules and loses 1-2-3 at Le Mans' would look very bad...

Anyway, it won't happen. But both teams will be probably looked more carefully next year.

  • me16/06/2010 at 01:03

    i'll be there.

  • guille230616/06/2010 at 01:04

protests should be lodged before sometime the afternoon of the race. I think...

    first brief is:

how the F1 highlights shows of old (1970's to late-80's) potentially skewered our vision of modern F1, especially considering the vast amount of coverage now afforded to the sport

(i.e. 35 minute highlights shows compared to 10-12 hour GP weekend coverage)

  • Leigh O'Gorman16/06/2010 at 02:57

    second brief is:

The next legendary circuits entry - montjuic...

As much as living in the Eastern Time Zone is decent as it allows me to see the European Formula 1 one races at a decent (early morning) time locally, it is awful in that your are always at least five hours late in wishing Europeans Happy Birthday.....

Anyway, Happy Birthday Christine. Too bad it did not coinside with that awesome Canadian Grand Prix.... It was so exciting that you completely forgot to look for marmots....

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Hehehe, the panda cake with Christine's name on it was a good find.

last one has stopped hotlinks though.

    Hello, folks. :)

    http://f1.gpupdate.net/en/formula-1-news/237144/williams-likely-to-retain-barrichello-and-hulkenberg/

If FW is serious (and I don't see why he couldn't be), where would they be without Rubens now? Struggling to beat Sauber? That would be an epic low for Williams...

  • Journeyer16/06/2010 at 12:21

and Lotus will run its 500th GP at Valencia.

    http://f1.gpupdate.net/en/formula-1-news/237054/lotus-to-start-500th-grand-prix-in-valencia/

Clive will attend to mark the occasion. Do you think that Clive attending legitimizes Lotus F1's claim to this being their 500th GP?

  • paul16/06/2010 at 12:24

No not really. I am surprised anyone is calling it their 500th.

Remember the episode of Star Trek DS9 when Sisko flew in something that was like a sailboat in space?

No not really. I am surprised anyone is calling it their 500th.

It's a bit odd - IIRC, they said before that they're not claiming to be the same as the old Team Lotus, yet they go for the GP 500 claim. It's a bit of having your cake and eating it too. Ultimately, I still like them, but for me, this is just marketing spin to attract attention and sponsors.

I invented my own sport called TennIce in work on Friday and Saturday, where we playt tennis in the staff room hitting a scrunched up Greggs bag as a ball and our hands to hit it. A table acts as a net

The aerodynamic qualities of an Greggs bag make it a challenging and fun game. As the inventor I like to think that the welsh are the best in the world at TennIce.

my favourite local example is that Etihad took over the naming rights to a stadium here but because Qantas are a sponsor of the AFL, they don't even call it Etihad Stadium when they refer to it, they just call it "Docklands Stadium" because thats the part of town it's in. Naming rights fail.

    Hi guys...

Back from Montreal and I was not sure if anyone had mentioned Kimi leading the Rally de Laterna all the way into the final stage and then getting pipped by that pesky Ogier...

Anyway the guy did terrific on his first ever asphalt rally...

Constantly scanning the net for news on Saturday did earn me a few raised eyebrows on the Isle Notre Dame ....

To celebrate I popped into the casino when the champagne ran out..

Oh and the race wasn't bad the next day either...

What?!? You'd think it was within the wit of humankind to make a diesel prototype that didn't visibly pollute and was still faster than the petrol versions...

Do they do actual emissions tests on the cars?

  • Alianora La Canta16/06/2010 at 17:02

    I have no idea what ACO rules are on protests. Don't know when a protest has to be lodged. {Comment #103}

The only limitation on protests is that they must be before the FIA WMSC meeting in December that seals the year's results. So there's plenty of time yet for a team to stump together the requisite €680 to make a protest.

  • Alianora La Canta16/06/2010 at 17:03

    Do they do actual emissions tests on the cars? {Comment #348}

Only on visibility I think, not on composition as such. The rule is there largely for aesthetic reasons rather than environmental ones.

  • Alianora La Canta16/06/2010 at 17:05

    mmmm... perhaps. but I still think that an 'Audi break the rules and loses 1-2-3 at Le Mans' would look very bad... {Comment #118}

It would - but fancy the headline "Strakka LMP2 team comes second overall?"

  • jpancoast16/06/2010 at 17:09

Only on visibility I think, not on composition as such. The rule is there largely for aesthetic reasons rather than environmental ones.

bah. Yeah, it "looks" bad, but I'm more concerned with whether it's ACTUALLY bad.

Perhaps that's why I dress like a slob and never shave.

  • Alianora La Canta16/06/2010 at 17:10

    Agreed. I only get a hair cut every year, when I visit my aunt who absolutely insists on bringing me to the hairdresser. :P {Comment #214}

I can't remember the last time I had a haircut and don't see the point of me visiting, since I like the length of my (long) hair and it doesn't seem to need anything complicated doing to it.

  • jpancoast16/06/2010 at 17:10

  • Marilene Riddle16/06/2010 at 17:11

Back from Montreal and I was not sure if anyone had mentioned Kimi leading the Rally de Laterna all the way into the final stage and then getting pipped by that pesky Ogier...

OMG how awesome is the iceman really? But Ogier should have won, or it'll just make both Sebs look stupid (especially when the younger just beat the older to winning Portugal).

  • Alianora La Canta16/06/2010 at 17:11

    bah. Yeah, it "looks" bad, but I'm more concerned with whether it's ACTUALLY bad. {Comment #353}

It's probably no better than road emissions, though matters are somewhat controlled by the fact that teams can only use the type of diesel or petrol fuel with which the ACO supplies them.

I think that Kimi surprised Seb Mark II....

I think Ogier hasn't shown form on tarmac yet as Citroen have only put him into the main team for gravel rallies...

Bulgaria may be interesting but I am just sorry that I have to be at Silverstone instead...

I'll listen to that later as a podcast. Listened to the Ant interview and the Hindy rant again at the end of part 20.

I don't think what Ant said was that bad ... I think that Hindy totally took his comments out of context. Calling him a D*** and having a go at him because he drove in F1 (which Hindy loves to have a go at) was out of line.

The outrage has spilled over!! He was genuinely annoyed. He thought I was being fussy or something. I asked about the saltire and he said "people might be offended" which I thought was cheek when he couldn't understand that I was offended by the idea of painting an english flag on my face!

don't they each have a different seat cover/inlay/whatever they put in when they do their stint?

  • Alison16/06/2010 at 19:26

don't they each have a different seat cover/inlay/whatever they put in when they do their stint?

Hahaha he genuinely has a booster seat??

  • jpancoast16/06/2010 at 19:26

don't they each have a different seat cover/inlay/whatever they put in when they do their stint?

wonder if the pedals are adjustable.

  • startledbunny16/06/2010 at 19:27

Hahaha he genuinely has a booster seat??

i saw one get thrown out of the audi when mcnish was getting out/in

  • RubberGoat16/06/2010 at 19:27

I still want to know how they make a car fit Ant and Wurz

I remember when the Brabham brothers shared a BMW for the Bathurst 1000 one year that because they were of a similar shape and size, instead of changing seats, one of them had a cushion sewn into the back of race suits...

  • Steven Roy16/06/2010 at 19:29

don't they each have a different seat cover/inlay/whatever they put in when they do their stint?

Yes but there is a huge difference between those two

wonder if the pedals are adjustable.

They don't have time to do that

  • lou16/06/2010 at 19:31

hehehe! having conversations with f1 photographers while listening to Ant is awesome :)

  • Steven Roy16/06/2010 at 19:31

I really liked watching the crews work.

  • startledbunny16/06/2010 at 19:36

found this video showing a driver change, you see the seat pad being removed, but nothing with the pedals. the drivers are probably a similar height.

I think September through to November, my bank balance is going to take quite a hit what with:

    GT5

    F1 2010

    Test Drive Unlimited

    WRC

    Need For Speed Hot Pursuit

    Call of Duty Black Ops

    Gears of War 3, etc.

All coming out in this period of time!

Yeah, that'll do it. I know just what to ask Dad for my birthday. Need For Speed Hot Pursuit please! :D

  • Pat W16/06/2010 at 21:10

Intresting though, Virgin and Lotus are in it and I saw Chandhoks name so that means HRT are there. wonder who is messing.

  • startledbunny16/06/2010 at 21:12

I think September through to November, my bank balance is going to take quite a hit what with:

    I'm only interested in F1 2010, GT5, maybe Portal 2.

Red Dead Redemption and GTA4 Episodes will have to keep me going until then. More RDR than GTA though

  • Scott Woodwiss16/06/2010 at 21:13

  • Lukeh16/06/2010 at 21:13

well arcade consoles are £120 so i'd say about £50-60 trade in. GAME tell you trade in prices over the phone so give your local one a ring tomorrow

Ooh, I've actually got a day off tomorrow so might just do that.

Mind you, mine at the time was the "premium" console with the hard drive.

  • Lukeh16/06/2010 at 21:15

Mind you, mine at the time was the "premium" console with the hard drive.

yeah but what you'd be trading in would be an arcade model, as there'd be nob hard drive

  • Lukeh16/06/2010 at 21:15

    Urm, no hard drive.

  • Scott Woodwiss16/06/2010 at 21:16

    Urm, no hard drive.

See, if there was a way of transferring my data somewhere and then being able to trade it in with the hard drive, then that would work.

  • Lukeh16/06/2010 at 21:17

See, if there was a way of transferring my data somewhere and then being able to trade it in with the hard drive, then that would work.

Only way is by buying the larger hard drives which come with a transfer data kit. even then, those kits only work from HDD to HDD.

Although 360's now support USB drives for storage so if by any chance you had a 16GB usb pen...

  • James16/06/2010 at 21:18

i don't understand the love for an xbox.. from what i hear they just seem to break all the time. Everyone i know with one has sent it back to microsoft at least once to get it fixed.. that would annoy me. Then again i'm not someone who plays games much..

you don't get this with PS3. just backup first, fit your own HDD with same spec, and restore from backup.

  • Lukeh16/06/2010 at 21:19

i don't understand the love for an xbox.. from what i hear they just seem to break all the time. Everyone i know with one has sent it back to microsoft at least once to get it fixed.. that would annoy me. Then again i'm not someone who plays games much..

I heart my xbox but even I can't defend how porrly made they were when they originally came out, at one point the chance of one breaking down was around 40-50%. But they've improved them lots over the past 2 years I'd say, but yeah, originally they had a horrific reliability rate

  • startledbunny16/06/2010 at 21:21

    one word - microsoft

yeah, but, sony? i was so surprised when i found out i could do my own upgrade.

I believe so, check the Xbox.com website just to make sure

(i should really be an xbox spokesperson for a job :))

  • Lukeh16/06/2010 at 21:22

yeah, but, sony? i was so surprised when i found out i could do my own upgrade.

Actually sony are starting to get dodgy about it. You can't do that on the new ps3 slims and you can;t install linux on any ps3 anymore as they've banned it and blocked the option to do so

  • Scott Woodwiss16/06/2010 at 21:22

I'd like to think the reliabilty is improved for this new slim one. Otherwise there'll be some fist shaking for sure!

i don't know anyone with a Wii that's had to send it back because it broke down... just sayin..why do microsoft rush to release things..silly people

Even the newest 360s have been reliable, the new slim one will be much much more reliable I'm sure.

people with wiis usually have to replace their tv before the wii, because of throwing the controller into the screen

you shouldn't have to buy a new model for an unreliability problem like that to be fixed.. it shouldn't be released like that in the first place... imo :)

Pppphhhhh! Sore fingers. Just audited my docs from Le Mans and calculated that I wrote 11,000 words over the course of the weekend...

They are quite very so unbeliavably loud.

It's the wretched internet. Time was when I could take notes and write a report over a glass or two of wine in the comfort of my own home. Now it's a case of shovelling coal into the monster (while other people, who have no deadlines to observe, witter on and drive you potty)

  • Stuart C16/06/2010 at 21:37

Had insanely itchy foot after being bitten by a nocturnal insect. Better than spending half the race in the toilet though. Epic race! Worth all the itching.

But the 360 just takes the mickey. It's like a jet engine starting up.

Have to say – I visited the house of a 360 owner once and when he fired it up I thought a 737 was doing a fly-past

Autosport.com had a live page people could use in a pinch, people can't expect instant 500+ word reports.

you need an external usb drive to backup the original drive (my ps3 was 40gb, took half an hour to do this). get a sata 2.5" 5400 rpm drive (quite cheap) then restore data from external drive back. i have a 250gb drive, no problems at all.

worst case scenario, refit the original drive back in if it doesn't work.

  • Andy Taylor16/06/2010 at 22:10

Oh dear. What happened? Get well soon :(

I got an eye infection. As a contact lens wearer due to my Keratoconus (Wikipedia explains all), the doctors were very keen to make sure I got intensive treatment so I can get back to the lenses. This meant eye drops every hour for at least 25 hours, so they admitted me to hospital. Not the one 10 minutes away, but the area eye specialist at Stoke Mandeville.

There I stayed for 3 nights - drops on the hour and nothing else to do. After the first night I was allowed 6 hours off to sleep at night. Luckily I had my iPhone and a good 3G signal otherwise I'd have gone crazy.

I can't wear lenses for at least 4 weeks and will need new ones because mine got taken away for culturing to see what nasty bug I had.

  • RubberGoat16/06/2010 at 22:10
