Welcome to Thursday 17th June 2010, the F1 circus has moved on from Canada and the teams will be working on the upgrades they will be bringing to the European Grand Prix in Valencia a week on Saturday.
- Fernando Alonso has been talking up the upgrade package that Ferrari will be brining to Valenica, it is rumoured to include an exhaust system similar to that of the Red Bull.
- The Epsilon team are worried about late decision being made on who will be the 13th entrant for next season, suggesting that the FIA announcement won't come until the end of August leaving whoever the new team is with a small window to build the car.
- Mercedes haven't given up on this season and Nico Rosberg has come out saying that we need to wait to see where they are in Valencia before we consider writing them off.
- Joe Swayard has a post on why it may be better, in terms of money, for the new teams to finish 11th instead of 10th.
- Ferrari gave their young drivers a run in the F2008 around Fiorano on Monday as part of their development, looking at that car it seems so long ago now that the cars had all the little aero bits coming off them.
- Some videos of the F1 2010 game being demonstrated at E3 have appeared, the wet conditions look impressive and the game overall is looking pretty awesome.
- In World Cup news, yesterday saw World Cup favourites Spain suffering a shock defeat by Switzerland as the tournament served up its first major upset. In the other games Chile beat Hounduras 1-0 and hosts South Africa lost 3-0 to Uruguay.
That's it for this daily post there is again today lots of football to look forward to, with the breakout thread appearing later on. Hope you all have a good day and I shall see you in the comments!
just catching up on a backlog of tweets...
anyone would think anthony davidson was never on the radio.
Evening folks
My local Sainsbury's has stopped operating 24hrs :(
Haven't read any tweets on it but listened to the show. Was a total love in
Don't they know people work shifts?
i'll just be waiting for our apology then.
I'll end up shopping in there less if I can't get there by 11:30
They've got the store staffed to pack the shelves, seems silly to me
I think so. At least you have Kathi so your skype problems are not as bad as theirs
they skyped him? he works for a radio station, could then not get an idsn line hooked up?
No. They met Ant at Silverstone and pre-recorded everything. They were skyping their man in America. Most of the show was Ant though
ahh right, yeah they usually do that. i haven't listened for months but they used to lose him two or three times an hour.
Damn those Kangaroo TV people for telling me the prices are going up on Friday
Now I have to make an instant decision
they read the comments too?
I''ve been watching stuff, about to head to bed.
It really helped that he has been, he was able to perfectly describe his emotions and the situation from his point of view. And he was quite emotional.. But yeah as Steven said, bit of a love-in from all sides. Hindaugh did back down from his rant but didn't actually apologise.
mmm decisions
Oh really? That's annoying.
They sent me an email
I think I registered with them a few months ago for some reason, probably to get prices.
Have booked a handset for the weekend now, £12.50 a day is probably cheaper than the 3G data I could use and I have big doubts over coverage for MiFi purposes over the weekend
Having ALL the data has spoiled us on a GP weekend :)
This is Dex, you'll be waiting a while.
One of us will have to point out the 3million tweet at some point...
Anyway, bed, see you Thursday..
:)
Err, hi Alistair [and Amy?]
Night Pat
nice summary. that'll save me listening in :)
When you put it like that...
there is no question that you need one. forget iphone/ipad/mifi in spa.
the only question is who are you sharing with.
On a positive note, I ordered my iPhone 4 this morning
Not having my wallet at work yesterday has pushed back delivery by a week
I hear it's now another 2 weeks again, 600,000 sold yesterday
For a device no one has seen in the flesh!
I think Pat & I have one each so we can negotiate for the highest bidders :)
nice one.
how come autosport already have one?
not a huge thing of interest, but have added a facebook drop down widget to the sidebar of blog pages: http://sidepodcast.com/blog/
They do?
Or are blagging that they do?
Bleurgh, gone right off FB
I blame my family for joining ;)
that would be an odd thing to make up: http://twitter.com/gcreighton/status/16303556620
Figured I could trade in or sell my 3G S and only pay about £50 more tahn I would normally for a new handset
I need Apple addiction therapy
Oh, a glimpse
They know some people... no biggie
Bet Mr Inahtko has one
Did he/she go to WWDC?
i have one too and so does pamela. quite a kangaroo clan we are!
you personally must be keeping them in business this year :)
Musr remember to look at the cars occasionally
i have given them $100. and by $ i mean "i have just learned the kindle does not do the euro sign" i really only want it for 5live, hope i dont look at the screen too much.
Do track broadcasts have commentary but someone else or it that R5L too?
I think I need a Bluetooth keyboard for the kitchen when I am preparing food
Loving the iPad dock
it's awesome for team/driver radio though. you can just tune in to rob all day.
track broadcasts are someone else
track provide local commentary, but sometimes in local the language.
Ooh, didn't think of that
Kangaroo TV will be awesome though, especially in the new multi-screen format
Amy: are you using Alistair's phone or computer?
lower-case amy ftw
*if you are Christine ;)
My Friday has turned into the longest day at work ever [to be]
I am due to be on a late shift until 10:30 but all the management staff in our hangar have a meeting scheduled from 9-3pm
Effectively, it's a 3-lined whip [mandatory] and to beat the traffic I'll have to aim for an 8am arrival
:( :(
i am using alistair! he is neither phone nor computer :) this free internet thing will really help keep my roaming costs down overseas because otherwise i would be mobile commenting all day. I CAN CAPS IF I WANT TO
well, you did start last weekend early.
Is Alistair your Kindle or an actual person who can interface with the interwebz?
course you can.
But What About Title-case?
After 7 earlies, I earned the right!
Only 2 more working weekends and I'm back to Mon-Fri
Woo hoo!
alistair is my kindle. update 2.5.2 removed internet rstrictions for thosenot in the usa :)
Apart from monochromatic ones ;)
Title I Can Do Too. it just takes so long because i type with my thumbs and i have to hit shift before every single letter. it doesnt come as naturally as shift when typing on a proper keyboard
monochromatic free comments are all i need.
there's a subtitle if ever there was one
Punctuation is optional? ;)
woah comments have loaded different this time around. i have the proper buttons up the top instead of just the text. i also just tested the twitter feature. its kind of lame
You're quite demanding for a free internet user aren't you?
nothing changed here. why is it lame?
oh, you mean the kindle's twitter feature? yeah, i can't fix that.
You haven't fixed twitter yet?
How far down 'the list' is that?
i think twitter has been delisted due to being unfixable.
something about downtime being a charm i believe :)
its gone bck to normal now. very odd. the twitter thing could be cool if i was reading something interesting but instead i went for the only book i have that mentions roger
They should have bought a few thousand Mac Mini servers last week before the price increase
That might've helped
But they say it's just 'maintenance'
http://www.macworld.co.uk/digitallifestyle/news/index.cfm?newsid=3227173&pagtype=allchandate
*not obsessive at all*
Hmm,
I think I've gotten too deep into eharmony communciation than I care
Questions/structured messages are too restrictive
Should I just go for date or bail?
ref: james' daily. i (heart) the old ferrari's twiddly bits :(
Why is that?
To some extent, it madde the lines more interesting but I prefer the cleaner lines of today
ooh i should totally tweet parts of the nascar romance novel. its too lame/awesome not to share
date!
i think because it looked like someone had spent of lot of effort and money developing them.
the lines are sleek, curvy and gorgeous. looks like it meant business.
Exactly
I'm not sure how interested I am but I am sure that someone else's choice of questions isn't helping
Were?
You want them to look expensive and well thought out?
mr c, did you see my request for a guest post slot in august?
Before Spa, pre-GP holiday post?
Ooh, damn. I have a post to write
[hides]
post canada wasn't it?
;)
i didn't.
a) why are you requesting a slot so far in advance?
b) do you want publishing rights, so you can post as you please?
It is still post Canada! ;)
Before Valencia - promise
It's Amy
It's Amy ;)
hehe: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=6254396&o=all&op=1&view=all&subj=43939928877&aid=-1&id=625611264
not a problem in the slightest. i can hassle if you need motivation though.
Looks like 2010 aero rules too
[bargeboards questionable]
Remind me if I haven't said it's in work by Sunday
shall do
Your motivational skills need some work, Sir ;)
i figure the 4 week break which ends in my second race of 2010 would be a lovely time to finally look back at my first. this was my plan all along, to brighten up the long midseason break. cough.
! ;)
Sounds good
you prefer the carrot?
ok, if it's in by sunday am, i'll get the first guinness in next meetup.
that's a great plan. booked!
I'd prefer the last, at my choosing ;)
hello there
Hi Guille
a) because it will never happen without a deadline. b) no, i like it when i can't possibly break the site
Internet dating is easier after 2 glasses of wine
Less prevarication, yay or nay mentality with a small buffer
morning guille
good morning.
my way of thinking... :P
also: a deadline is not a deadline if it's not pushed to the limit
You're enjoying your kindle, I see :)
Deadline needs to be renamed to something like 'quite ill but recoverable-line' with another stage of 'this really is your last chance' added to the equation
It's lost it's meaning
:D
Yes. deadlines for conferences are so predictable: 'There won't be an extension'... ''OK, due to the overwhelming number of people applying the last few days we're extending the deadline for one week'
It never fails ;-)
They should be named, best excuse wins the extension, lines
Amy: You'll go to Paris in your super-trip, correct? Do you have an idea of when?
Safety advice. Motor bike powered merry go rounds are not safe
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cjlY6LMSRZk
yep i am in paris from late 19 september to early on the 22nd. its my last stop before singapore
Darwin's Law at work
i wish he'd have hit the biker
but fast turning merry go round are fun! :)
Exactly. Those that lean forward survive and those that lean back have less resistance to centrifugal force.
:D
There are a few similar incidents on youtube and I keep expeting someone to get a hand mangled on the rear wheel or chain
mmmm... I might be there those days. I don't know yet, I'm sure I'll be there on 12th but I have yet to define my schedule after that. If I'm there I'll tell you, we can do something if you want
Sidepod-meet up en France
I might even pop over if the timing's right
crêpes and wine ;-)
Sounds tres bien
sounds good if i have time, monday is really my only free day as tuesday is disney day. but im sure ill get done what i want to do in the daytime so if anyone is around for dinner that would be great.
do you already have a list of places to visit?
Amy: for info
Spa tickets are still 'being prepared'
I'm beginning to think they are not yet ready for us
#lurkers
hahahahahaha
eeeeehehe
heh
Do you want them by the day or by the hour?
i want to go to roland garros and to louis vuitton on champs elysees, the are my two must do things. and i suppose i cant go to paris without going to the eiffel tower and arc de triomphe :D
there is a newsletter saying something about them being sent at the beginning of July instead of June
:)
Apparently, they are starting to go out already
good :D
Mr C: As we are in site of August, is it too early to sk if you fancy coming to the GP in Spa>
*sight
pamelas say being prepared too so im not sure how up to date their info is
after goodwood, i reckon it will be.
#oneeventatatime
Oh, and she has hers in hand
*Tuts* ;)
I demand to know when Giggles is back
I have too many questions
we need more canadas and less valencias so that mr c wont mind giving money to bernie
Think of it as a SidepodBonding Mission rather than a Bernie pocket filling exercise
sounds good. You'll have plenty of time to do it. Roland Garros, I'm sorry to say it to you, is just the museum. They didn't allowed me to get into the court (I wasn't very insistent, though). Louis Vuitton maybe can take you longer :P . The Arc de Triophe is very close to the latter, so that's two for the price of one.
The Eiffel Tower, well, it can take you AGES (up to 1 or 2 hours just for the ticket line). I would recommend you to go and check (she's beautiful from the ground anyway). If there is a lot of people and you still fancy seeing Paris from high above, you can go the Tour Montparnasse (the ugliest and tallest building in the city). Not the same that the Eiffel, but much faster.
And you MUST go (and enter) Notre Dame, and walk around the Louvre area
that is true. it just doesn't seem like a good way to go about living life to me.
"i hate what you did to f1, so here's £300 for your trouble"
a better way must be to walk up to the fence, peer inside, and then go spend your money elsewhere.
oh and the tickets come with bright orange lanyards. hooray! lanyards make sense. silly monza.
I have begun tweeting Emma of our request [née demands] for a Joe audience at Spa
you won't get lost... in the dark
Since Bahrain, or a race or 2 later to some, this season has been fantastic
hehe. surely going to silverstone is the best way to make it happen?
"i paid to be here and i'll pay again"
am glad you're enjoying it.
thus far i've enjoyed... two and a bit races?
Race too expensive, audience transportation too problematic :(
yeah sadly roland garros wont let you in unless you do the tour which only runs on days im not there. i can spend a while in the worlds largest LV though!
I really am
But you kinda switched off quite early, i sense you're 'coming back'
Pre-season [early adopter]
Will pay aghain [in Spa]
i paid for melbourne will pay for singapore and would still do spa. #joegroupie
if you say so.
:)
I think Singapore is my 'next race' destination
Staff trave may be an issue, as would be, extended stay in Singapore
Malaysia sideline?
Former or latter
Trip, not race, obviously
morning.........
Hi Leigh
hi bassano,
how does you be sir?
Good thanks. Dublin treated me well
And you?
you can't get lost at RG
both.
i think we switched off at the right time, and i think f1's problems haven't gone away. i'd still change 90% of it.
do i care for the racing? not really. i love the internal collapse of red bull though.
hi leigh
not tooo bad - just tired (and somewhat inebriated)
hi guille
what goes on?
there is always brits at singapore. you should do malaysia. come stay with 7 teams with me :D
You take a detailed interest in the things that others look at in passing
Essentially, we all want better racing but it's interesting to see what each person notices
Same
interesting post from pressdog
Huh?
winter and snow. not at the city level, but the mountains are white, and I'm happy :) (when do they open the ski center?)
it's not even july yet.......
Ooh, skiing, yes
I really wanna snowboard
I guess Argentina in October is no good for that
heh that rg picture is cool *must find that pole*
marginal. if there is late snow, some ski center can stay open until mid october. but it's spring snow if you're lucky, stones, ice and water if you're not...
i am splashing out on a hotel in malaysia next year where heaps of teams stay #stalking
Shall save the snow for another time
S. Americca exploring adventure takes precedent
they should open the 1st of July (at least I have a season pass that says so). But if it snows a lot, they can advance it by one or two weeks :)
i don't know if i agree with that.
i want to be entertained. i don't wish to sit being bored silly when i could be doing something more productive. you may think i want better racing as defined by your idea of better racing. but that isn't the case.
Gimme a shut when tickets are on sale
#Don'tSayTheyAlreadyAre
hello mr c
hey leigh, what's new?
OK, fair point
We all want more enjoyment out of F1, how about that?
that i can agree with.
we're still not close to coming back though. not if you look at in terms of "hours spent creating f1 content". we must be up on the 10hrs we meant to cut back to, but not by much.
two things sir:
1) loved ant's interview on radio le mans - really, really brilliant stuff
2) still reeling from what steps just shy of admitting that the end of nascar races are fixed to a degree - always kind of knew, but it's never been admitted as such
shocked....
not on sale yet, you are safe :)
I didn't say 'coming back'
I said 'coming to Spa'
Who mentioned bloggin/broadcasting about it?
as an fyi for amy. i think the guilt trip:
"i'm coming all the way from the other side of the world, the least you can do is walk in the gate"
would serve you much better than anything to do with racing ;)
as i said last night, a post slightly relating to that coming soon
:)
actually. you said "coming back". about twenty comments ago:
http://sidepodcast.com/2010/06/17/daily-17th-june-2010/comments/#comment-813954
Damn your love of archives ;)
I didn't ... ah forget it
;)
If someone could explain to me why my body thinks I only want 3 hours sleep before I do a double, I'd be really grateful!
I'm broken :(
Actually
Coming back in the sense of, returning to like/love/want F1
Coming back to full SPC mode, didn't even consider it
it's been suggested since at least 2006, right? i remember people questioning the tv directors for not finding debris on camera, because there was none to find.
i don't find it shocking. fans want close finishes and they're regularly delivering close finishes. where's the issue?
hehehe
Shift workers jet lag
Hi Alison
#GoToSleep
this is why i love karun
i know it's been suggested and even i have said it loads, but i always thought that racing would rise above it.
this essentially confirms that nascar is motor racing's equivalent of the circus
what? who said what where?
i don't think it's either.
i love the community. i love things like the daily guest post and i am genuinely surprised that people keep putting the effort in. i love the people in f1 too. it's mostly about people in fact.
i (hearts) christine's rankings and tweets of the week. there's no racing in that, and that's good by me.
Jesus statue struck by lightning and fried. Is this an act of God?
http://uk.news.yahoo.com/4/20100616/twl-jesus-statue-is-struck-by-lightning-41f21e0.html
waltrip and a few other commentators said as much after a "disappointing" michigan race - i'll see if i can dig it up
i kinda like it more for that. if it wasn't on a silly time, and it was available on something like iplayer, i'd be an uber nascar fan i think.
Then carry on, you're both [still] doing a fine job
I don't even work shifts anymore. Or I sort of do but all between the hours of 6 and 8 which seems reasonable. Sadly I do have a whole 13 hours of joy waiting for me today.
I fell asleep about 1 and have just woken up. I can just feel that sleep is a no for the rest of the night.
nahhh- i like indycar for how they don't try to go down that road
Get up, have a snack
Sleep when you get home
I've given up sleeping when I'm supposed to, it doesn't work for me
"It's crazy - you know. Things happen. You can't explain it, can you?"
err, actually, yeah.
how dare science get in the way?!?
I love it when religious people say something that can be explained can't but all their stuff is sooo logical
i can see both sides of the argument. we've had long debates about what is and what isn't sporting here before. it's a fine line, but doing that wouldn't put me off watching it.
f1 did it this year, if i recall and that improved a less-than-dramatic race, didn't it?
:)
:)
Yeah. I can just feel when I won't get back to sleep. There's no amount of anything that's going to work so there's really no point trying,...
My to do list did start somewhere along the lines of harassing Nick though...
which race again? i get confuzzled
#PoorNick
erm. china, maybe? race control said it was for debris but no camera or photographer ever picked any up.
safety car equalled pitstops and reshuffled the already predictable order.
:O
I resent that!!
Why?
You just mentioned hassling him
No one likes being hassled
I quite enjoy making fun out of him, it's not like I'm not being balanced :)
i remember that - it was piece from alguersuari's car, wasn't it?
going to bed. night!
Night Guille
Night
i need to check to be sure, but it's in the rules that if the pitlane is blocked in any way, then the safety car is an option
People in S.America are sleeping before us
#ThingsThatShouldn'tBeASurprise
night guille
see ya guille.
:D I'm not a pest!! It's helpful really. I know he's hungover so best wake him up a bit early so he has a chance to properly wake up before work? *innocent face*
Did I say pest
#Guilty
Tbh I do just want to pester....
#Busted
night folks
me = tired = beer = ughhh....
Night Leigh
i found this post about blog comments insightful: http://brianericford.tumblr.com/post/705640507/comments
there's been much discussion on the net today about the benefit of having comments on a blog. we talked about this a while back when joe threatened to turn them off, and i'm noticing more and more bloggers disable that option.
i can't pick a quote, the whole post is worth reading and i can't say that i'm fussed about the argument either. some blogs have comments and some don't. fair enough.
i can see more people closing down or limiting comments in the future though.
Woohoo I get paid tomorrow. Sadly I've sort of decided where it's all going already :( Stupid other side of the world being so expensive :(
nighto
i just went on lunch but now i am back. and guilt trips i can definitely do :D
brilliant. address them fao: ms christine blachford, rockall.
(she has the credit card)
:)
i can also do blackmail "if you don't come i am never transcribing again"
:D
win!
Ooooh what's this I see about a date??
#nosy
Steady!
Not yet, you'll be amongst the first to know
Bah this is not good at all!
Time for sleep I think. It's only 4 hours later than planned but not everything can go to schedule. It's not like Amy is organising my sleep.
Night all.
hehe. night steven.
Night Steeeeeeeven :)
:D
Night Steven
Me too, night folks
night chap
night folks
Morning ;)
Morning gavin
Amy, have you seen the Kiwi-friendly World Cup Wall Chart? It's Ace!
http://www.bobagio.com/the-kiwi-friendly-world-cup-2010-wallchart
Is supplying the football for the world cup as thankless a task as supplying F1 with tyres?
ooh handy *subtracts 2 hours from kick off times*
^^ Thought for the day...
Morning to all in Sidepodland.
Morning :)
I hate being ready early! I have 15mins till I leave the house and nothing to do!
This is what iPod games were designed for :)
i don't really have many... And I'm bored of angry birds cause it's tooo hard :(
Did you have a nice birthday?
Yup, very nice. In the middle of two rather stressful weeks at work, though, so I would have preferred to be sipping a cocktail somewhere instead :)
ahh boo for stressful weeks at work :(
Actually, not in the middle of it anymore. It's Thursday, isn't it? So my killer fortnight has almost ended. Woo!
First time I've cheered for a Thursday in a long time.
Good morning.
I can think of better places to be than the office on a warm sunny day. :)
yaayyy!!!! So Thursdays can be awesome :) I'm still trying to figure out where we should go today... I think it might be a wandering day in london...
We're grabbing a sandwich and sitting outside later...
I may go and sit outside with my lunch and old Autosport mag..
Perfect!
On the one hand, my sense of motorsport is offended by it... But if you don't call it motor "sport" but motor "entertainment" and approach it as such, it can be enjoyable. Like Leigh says, anything that purposely ignores 95% of the race distance purely to manufacturer a close ending is a circus. But if you know that going in then I guess that's fine..
So does this football have a break at all? I like it but 3 games per day is tiring.
I've just come to the end of similar. Good to get it out of the way :)
Games every day until 30th.
It's a little tiring - got my blogging done though ;)
To balance out football talk, the new Wimbledon site looks nice.
http://www.wimbledon.org/en_GB/index.html
Podcasts and everything.
hehehe that's the day of my last exam!! :)
Wooo. Do we get our Lou back then?
The Queen is visiting. Will she be on the Pimm's? :)
http://www.wimbledon.org/en_GB/news/articles/2010-05-17/201006011275399262946.html
yep, well I go to goodwood the next day.. Hyper photography obsessed jenson fan will be in her element ;).
.. No idea why I changed the tense if that sentance but hey ho.
Hehe.
Wimbledon has changed considerably since the Queen's previous visit in 1977..
I bet she gets lost. Someone will find the Queen wandering around the grounds looking for the royal box.
It's the draw tomorrow too. So we'll find out who Roger and Andy face in their first rounds.
yaayy I'm hoping someone easy for andy...
And now I must go... Bye!!xx
have fun..
"Could you direct one to the tennis competition?"
I'm listening to the MWM interview with Anthony Davidson.
Hehehe.
And how is that?
Interesting so far. Ant is describing his race...
Is he describing how his race is more important than the corvettes?
You know he never said that. Listen to part 20 of the race, 50-ish minutes in. He only said he wanted to win. Hindy said those words...
Franck ping: http://iheartfranck.com/2010/06/17/moving-on-to-jarama/
ah it was all blown out of proportion. Ant is great anyway.
sounds like wrestling :-)
Boo to GP2.. New 3-year franchises are being decided, currently Racing Engineering and Meritus share a slot with one doing Europe, the other doing the Asia Series because that's all either can afford, but they both do it well. GP2 wants to stop that.

The link to this said "Boyle to direct opening ceremony"
Thankfully it is Danny, not Frankie, for the Olympics... :)
Unofficial tea-break over... choccy biccy consumed, onward..
Apparently it is someone else's birthday and they have bought better cakes than me. Talk about stealing my thunder.
Or Susan!
That's no good.
:D :D :D
That would be Awesomely terrible!
I dont understand this UK system of buying a cake when it is your birthday?
Surely the company should buy you a cake (or as we do here... beer)?
Why isnt she going to the final?
Couldn't she get tickets?
Another fabulous World Cup post: http://sidepodcast.com/2010/06/17/2010-fifa-world-cup-day-7/
now what happened to my site, I am used to RSS subscriber count to drop for no reason, but for it to go up 5 times in a day is rather unusual :-) surely must be a glitch
Places need more public wifi. Am standing waiting for lou in st pancake
St pancreas even...
I prefer St Pancake.
cafe next to me is making pancake hence it being in my head doh :(
hope the world cup post is fine, I fear it was a bit long again :s
I love it. My favourite bit is about the buttered toast breaking.
Lou is here and I don't think she wants me to stand here all day so byeeeee!
Have fun!
Hey guys
BIG update of info for GT5, and it's awesome! :D
http://www.gtplanet.net/gt5s-photomode-online-features-nascar-more-details-revealed/
http://www.gtplanet.net/more-gt5-details-highlow-beams-dynamic-crowds-no-bbq-smell/
This comment should be of particular interest to us:
More Formula 1 teams will bring their cars to the game, in addition to Ferrari.
:D :D :D!!!!
So Red Bull could be a strong call... anyone else?
Well the McLaren F1 road car is in the game, so they must be in there too. :P
No BBQ smell? That's it, I'm not buying it ;)
Plus I remember Kaz Yamauchi, the game's producer, saying a long time ago that there were going to be a lot of Ferrari F1 cars in the game, including the F2007 from GT5P.
i have solved that problem. the people in my office don't know when my birthday is. as yet, i've not had to take cakes in, and no-ones noticed.
Just put some BBQ sauce on your PS3 and you'll get the same effect. :D
You don't have a birthday.
there is that.
That worked for me for 3 years ;-)
He could be over 100, and no one would know!
Or quite young if he doesn't have birthdays
Maybe he measures his age in months!
I don't think he has an age either.
Sneaky
i do like the cakes others bring in.
Sidepodyears? That would be 4 right?
I worked with a Canadian once, he used to bring waffles :-)
She probably wants to see Andy and he won't make it that far ;)
Ooooh, hehehe.
Do track broadcasts have commentary but someone else or it that R5L too? {Comment #41}
Spa has its own French commentary. Not sure if they bother translating into English.
You haven't fixed twitter yet?
How far down 'the list' is that? {Comment #66}
I believe the fix for that would involve making a whole new way to communicate live with each other. Which probably means LCLT 3 or something...
that is true. it just doesn't seem like a good way to go about living life to me.
"i hate what you did to f1, so here's £300 for your trouble"
a better way must be to walk up to the fence, peer inside, and then go spend your money elsewhere. {Comment #142}
Or find a way of getting in free ;)
it's been suggested since at least 2006, right? i remember people questioning the tv directors for not finding debris on camera, because there was none to find.
i don't find it shocking. fans want close finishes and they're regularly delivering close finishes. where's the issue? {Comment #196}
Fans want competitive racing. Fixing finishes is not racing, even if it's manipulation caused by the governance rather than teams. That's why a lot of people would consider it shocking if it wasn't for the fact that they'd suspected it for ages anyway.
I dont understand this UK system of buying a cake when it is your birthday?
Surely the company should buy you a cake (or as we do here... beer)? {Comment #302}
It ensures that birthday celebrants bring something they like and doesn't cost the company anything. UK organisations hate spending money in my experience.
My old workplace had a system whereby people were liable to bring things in for their co-workers at random, ranging from multi-bags of crisps to punnets of plums, so everyone's used to beinging stuff in anyway and unless they reminded you, you'd forget that this time it was because it was their birthday, as opposed to celebrating handing in their coursework, coming back from Greece or getting a new pet chameleon (all of these happened while I was there, resulting in crisps, boiled sweets and flapjacks respectively).
Please may I have a job where I don't have to deal with people..?
Heheh. "I bought a new chameleon, have a flapjack" makes me smile
A flapjack for a chameleon? Sounds like a fair swap to me ;)
this sounds a lot like how I find any excuse to get cake.
Just be careful the chameleon isn't disguised as the flapjack.
An easy mistake to make!
why hello Christine. Did you know I live very far away? #guilttrip
Mm. You might say the other side of the world.
Indeed. You could say it's a 23 hour journey to get to any sort of sidepodmeetup. #mrctoldmeto
23 hours? That's optimistic...
What exactly are you guilt tripping me into?
http://sidepodcast.com/2010/06/17/daily-17th-june-2010/comments/#comment-813993
If it doesn't work, step 2 is blackmail :D
What's wrong with being at Spa but not going through the gate?
because then we would not see much of you :(
I see this being like the "Christmas Presents" discussion...
Singapore Airlines say Flying time: 23Hr(s):10Min(s)
I have the 6 hour stop over too though, boooo.
?
As in, you are perfectly happy doing something and we try and convince you that you shouldn't be.
If you guys want to come to Spa and not see the race, it's fine by me. I am only going on this trip to meet everybody and hang out with you. I reckon I could see the race better if I stayed at home ;)
We are not that interesting.
Yes you are. I was disappointed not to see you in London. If that's the compromise, then it's fine by me.
:)
you may wanna work on that subtlety!
The problem you have, Amy, is that our pros and cons list looks like this:
Pros
Meet Amy and the Sidepodgang
Cons
Purchase an extortionately priced ticket for an event we're not that fussed about going to, all the while lining Bernie's pockets with money, thus giving him no incentive to change anything, and weakening our own arguments against the sport being dull, dull, dull.
We could have the pro without the con. Everybody wins.
I do not know the meaning of the word :D
Bold fail.
fancy not using uber-interactive-live-preview-thing.
"...To Bodly fail where nobody has failed before..."
I wasn't quite ready to press post but I did anyway. Dense. If everyone could just refresh, then I don't have to be embarrassed about it.
Now that is POWER!
we could go back to the hotel, and you could still factbyte factbox.
♥
you both make good points. I shall end the guilt tripping and not even get onto the blackmail!
that was short and sweet.
It was the FBFB that did it. People can't resist :)
its 12.43am, brain is in zzzz mode :D
Here's a little "Top Deer" to tide us Top Gear fans over:
http://www.finalgear.com/news/2010/06/17/top-deer/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=top-deer
from Belgian TV? :)
that could be an issue.
actually, you'd be better of at the track with 5live in your ears.
i don't fancy the 3g bill for updating it from the circuit mind you.
I was about to suggest going to the Zolder circuit instead but they don't seem to have anything on that week. Or any week apart from this one coming..
Oooh, philosophical Ferrari tweets again: http://twitter.com/InsideFerrari/status/16394505093
you want us to watch some other kind of racing that isn't f1?
Oh, because that is so unusual these days.
not outside, in real life!
we've never even watched an f1 support race.
They are the only team I have unfollowed because their tweets annoy me so much :D
Good point.
although once a supercup driver threw his toys out of the pram in front of us...
Which was awesome!! And scary.
writing my blog about chips has made me hungry. booo chips.
have you been writing that for three days?
yes :D I think it shall be ready for posting. I keep stopping to go and find chips.
missed the key word out there.
four day blog posts. christine, take note. i may be slow...
Very much noted.
I think it makes our Eurovision must particularly special indeed.
it's great because when I'm done it will also only be about 3 paragraphs.
*post.
What's a better way to send a message to Bernie? I'm here in Belgium especially to see racing... but not F1.
that was whipped up in minutes! My next guest posts are being planned 2 months in advance :D
Just so everyone knows, I'll be watching GP2 and probably GP3
Kill me.
its a gift, from me to you, to fill up the mid season break. It's like a mini series only not a podcast and not you :D
next year, it'll have it's very own "on this day" entry.
you know you can't tell us about your euro trip until you've told us about the melbourne gp, right. otherwise they'd be out of order.
correct.
oh good.
Indeed it shall. I need to write one of those soon. Our homepage is very football-full.
Jacques Villeneuve is back in NASCAR, he's in the Nationwide race at Road America this week, first time the series visits.
Meanwhile the Cup series is at Sonoma for a road course race which can be 'interesting', Montoya should do well and Mattias Ekstrom of DTM (and RoC) has been roped in by Red Bull.
I keep forgettting the ctrl-v and maybe the tag #tenuousF1link
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/84542
Ah here we go, Bridgestone is bringing the supersoft to more places where it isn't suitable in the hope it gets more racing like in Canada..
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/84544
Will it work?
No
Awesome.
Hey look, a post: http://sidepodcast.com/2010/06/17/montezemolo-f1-race-no-place-for-gp2-pace/
About actual current news and everything.
hi folks
Tim doing aero testing in Vairano. Wonder if STR will have new bits at Valencia
http://twitter.com/JAIMEALGUERSUAR/status/16400800746
i reckon:
a) low slung exhausts
b) secret ride-height control
c) 18 men surrounding the car on the grid in valencia
#itsaredbullreally
but... but... but... the rules... they say it's not meant to be a red bull... are you questioning the vast integrity of the red bull / toro rosso franchise???
on a weekly basis, yeah.
well, at least we know when to expect it
:)
Good evening. I just spent far too much money in the Co-Op. Blame hungriness and the knowledge of having an empty freezer..
I watched the 2008 season review the other day, it felt so strange seeing those cars again. I kind of wish the regs had never changed.
Still likely to be cheaper than spending too muck money in M&S or Waitrose....
Probably. Waitrose is my nearest shop and I tend to just wander in there and buy a basket of stuff.. I think filling up the freezer is more economical though..
I do all my top-up shopping in Waitrose as I work right next door. It doesn't cost any more for me than going out of my way to Tesco for it, probably because I don't buy junk in there....
Errr... you don't get much 'junk' in Waitrose but generally I am generally tempted whenever I shop personally to buy lots of naughty but delicious stuff that I should not look at...
I now get them to deliver as I tend to be stricter when buying on line than when I actually go to the shop....
This mockup is great from Channel 4
http://www.channel4.com/news/media/2010/06/day17/17_olympicspotting_g_540.jpg
Those are excellent :)
Frankie Boyle directing the opening ceremony would make sure no-one ever forgot it
I haven't ventured into online shopping yet, when the real shops are so close I don't really need to. Apart from the money-saving thing. And the nice treats. :)
Question for all:
Does anyone here know for certain when the BBC started broadcasting all the races live? I know it's somewhere between 1989 and '91, but don't know for sure - any clues would be greatly appreciated.
:)
Way before that. The first proper coverage we had was 1978. That was the first time every race was covered but was generally late night highlights. Full coverage came some time after that but was before well before1989. Maybe 1979 or 1980?
I'm talking specifically about the full races live though. 1979 onwards were purely highlights, bar four-five races and it was only much much later that all races were broadcast live
Ask he-who-knows-what-you-want at the BBC. He will tell you when they started. And he'll be right because he said it too ;)
British, Italian, Monaco, French or German and the final race were often done live, but I was certain that the rest were highlight shows.
Que?
Benson. He'll tell you when he thinks they started and that will be the right answer ;)
I am sure it wasn't that much later before we had all the races live
I sent him a message, but haven't heard back yet. No rush though
:)
I bet it says in Murray Walker's autobiog.
I know Murray and James commentated on all the races live, because they were also covering F1 across the world, but I'm pretty sure the full season live didn't start on the BBC 'til much later. Could be wrong though...
Just checked the BBC entry on wikipedia. It says they started covering every race in 1976. They didn't. Wikipedia is wrong. What a shock
The Beeb started covering them in 1978, but I thought that was just highlights - I know German TV started covering full races live in the '70's with other countries following thereafter
1978 was highlights for almost races. That was absolutely definitely the first year that was done.
Aye, that's right.
Hullo all. Am sitting in mcdonalds waiting for my train which doesn't leave for agggges so thought I'd pop in to the comments
Good day?
hello sir
Hi Lukeh
yep. We saw lots of French flags on pall mall, I think Franck is in town
Hello I love the free wi fi here. Feel a bit lonely tho :(
Well, I'm surprised there wasn't a parade!
Hi Lou!
Does free wi-fi taste better?
Lonely with Lukeh?
london is preparing for amy!!! We saw roger on the side of a taxi!!
You'd think he could afford to get in.
corrected :(
hehehehee!!!
He has abandoned you? Never mind. Won't be long till you see him again
*waves at lou...
...in another station* :(
geography is rrrrrrrrubbish
yes to go back to a silly place called Wales :( yaaay for goodwood 2 weeks today! :)
this sucks... Although, in loving the free wi fi!!!
Who is supplying your free wi fi. They deserve a plug
not a clue, it's just says st pancras :) I love this station :)
Hello all, just had a quick look in the book and all it says is that in 1979 Murray was told that they would broadcast all of the European races live from the next year. So 1980 for most of them. Sorry if that's not very helpful Leigh.
i bet it's St Pancake
Am testing it out on the platform....
Nay that's grand
:)
Woo, thanks Janna :)
I shall pop off to save battery for trip home, see you all later!
Since NASA's manned exploration program was cut they seem to have come up with a lot of disaster predictions
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/science/space/7835232/Nasa-warns-new-meteor-storm-could-damage-Hubble-and-International-Space-Station.html
i know everyone's in the football thread (which i suppose i should read...) but i'm home :(
*waves*
Hey lou, all over now though. Fun day?
Nono I'm bored of the football.
Hello! Everyone is just ripping into France but we should be done soon. ;)
wohoo! :)
Hi Lou
an amazing day thanks :) even saw the PM himself in his car going the wrong way down Pall Mall... not something you see every day.. oh and it was nice to see Lukeh :)
I want to buy a parasol and I found some lovely cheap ones that are properly treated to keep uv off you but I just noticed they want 8 weeks for delivery :(
Wouldn't you melt by then? ;)
Nick said it'd be too hot for me to swim outside even if I went at 7am :( :( :(
oh my goodness :(
Sounds horrid.
I don't understand why they even bothered building a pool in that case.
They should have made it indoors.
i'm not sure how people can live in that temperature :(
Nocturnal swimming? Why don't they cover the pool?
No. I'm not sure how well I'm gonna deal with it tbh. I've just never been anywhere approaching that temperature before.
nocturnal swimming isfun, we used to do that in our pool. twas awesome.
staying inside? .. i take it with those kinda temps Nick has air conditioning :)
Yes!! I think it's very humid too though which I really hate. I find it really hard to breathe when the air gets too thick.
i hate humidity too...
... i hope Malaysia is off the calender by the time i become an f1 photographer! :)
Do you know how humid Brazil is?
Or even here in Singapore?
I need to sort through my clothes. I think I need something cool that's going to keep the sun off my shoulders and arms that I can put over a dress. I can't find anything that doesn't look ridiculous.
but Brazil is worth it for the awesome racing... Malaysia is all rain, humidity and boring racing ;)
I think you need to convince him to move somewhere that suits your wardrobe
@Christine
http://twitpic.com/1xmj9u
from Em.
I really need to get my travel insurance sorted. The chances that I'll collapse are definitely higher than zero....
ah it will be fine... i'll get used to it, it's worth it if i'm an f1 photog :)
Sleeping panda hidden Em
Well good for you. It is almost 5am here and the temperature persists at a humid 30.5 degrees Celsius. I can't sleep. :(
ooh goodness.... that sounds horrible.. my f1 weekends wont consist of much sleep then :( ah well.
But you'll stay in an air-conditioned hotel so all should be okay I guess. Until you step out into the afternoon sun. :P
an air conditioned hotel? am guessing they may be expensive... i'll have to make sure i have enough money to afford that then :) heheh thank goodness it's a night race and we sleep in the day then :D
Almost all hotels here are air-conditioned (you can guess why). Unless you choose to stay in the YWCA.
New series of Mock the week about to start on BBC2.
Cheers for the reminder
yay for lots of ai conditioning :)
oh and in Spa news.. i was chatting to Andy Hone yesterday, and he says i should definitely come and say hi to him at Spa :) yay for photogs being nice :)
Evening lou - sounds cool!
I love how you are just casually chatting to all these people now
Remember to give us plenty of shout outs once you become a F1 photog star! ;)
twitter is an amazing place :) the crystal palace event helped lots too :)
i really need to blog about that...
hehe of course :)
so, i'm gonna admit, lukeh's football post was kinda awesome..first time i've been reasonably interested in football.. :)
Good for you.
Got to go guys. I really should be getting some sleep before more epic-footballness tomorrow. ;)
Night Marilene
night!!
First day I'm excited bout all the games. Night!
When I went to Sao Paulo it wasn't too bad but it very much depends on exactly where you are in Brazil (it's a huge country) as well as the time of year....
Are you going to Interlagos this year?...
I only went once with work not to the race. I can't remember what time of year it was but it was Sao Paulo.
yay! join us for the england match tomorrow. pleeeease.
x1 aside with joe show wrapped. sorry i couldn't ask for questions, i haven't figured out the new wiki yet.
That's a pleasant surprise. Look forward to that
i can't. I'm doing the photography and video for our school concert....
... then Em is coming back to mine..
I may... however watch it when at goodwood seeing as lukeh seems to be able to make it interesting.... and if the tennis is over ;)
i'd written off hope of recording anything as joe's internets died, but he moved house to get connected :)
also, may have mentioned amy being joe's groupie. #sorryamy
boo :(
i love sleepy panda!
wohooo! i was thinking today my train journey was very quiet without the sounds of you and Joe :)
:D
sorry, but a photographer has got to do what a photographer has to do, but yay for the school wanting me to do all the photography for them.. :)
awesome! :) Em said she was doodling and remembered that she hadn't drawn the panda for you yet :)
saw the bestest thing ever today. a 4x4 with an extendable ladder so the photographer could be mobile but also get up high. it was like his own personal fire truck.
ahaha!!! awesome!!! :D
Night guys ;)
hi and bye chap
night!
Byee
hooraaaaaaay...

enough of that ball stuff, i need to rev an engine now
#hasbeenlurkingwhiledoingstuff
I love that clip
:D
i honestly couldn't believe he'd never seen it before. Him not knowing about it made me sound silly quoting it...
:D
That is awesome
I want one http://www.paradiseparasols.co.uk/parasols/82cm-waxed-cotton/
It was definitely backwards to usual :)
Jon might be on telly in a minute, he was in the Question Time audience (shhh no politics)
this is also awesome.
has some bad language in it though.. (just to warn people)
I'm expecting something very hard hitting from Jon
#jonforPM
you put that right asking me if i'd seen a film though :P
maybe i know more about comedy and you films? ;)
The other one is the Death Star canteen but I can't link it
Eddie Izzard did that routine on TV a couple of nights ago
and i forgot to link to it... haha i'm too tired.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sv5iEK-IEzw&feature=related
hehe yeah i was working and it was on in the background :D i love eddie izzard he's awesome.
Maybe he'll ask about Vettel and Webber
That was amazing :D
Nahhh... I think Jon will overlook the much discussed Rd Bull incident and slip in a tough question on KERS
:D :D

What question did you ask?
What are you wearing? Dimbleby likes to point out what people are wearing.
I didn't get to ask one :( booo.
A black shirt! Watch at the end, the camera man pretty much focuses on me
I am totally knackered so I am going to retire for the day. Night guys.
I missed you. Your eyes may have dazzled the cameraman
Night Lukeh
see you lukeh
Night Lukeh
night
4 row up in the centre block, on the left end as you look at it
:D
How long did it take to record Jon? Do the do re-takes of any of it or is it as it seems?
Blog post?
It's recorded exactly as you see it, not edited at all :)
I shall blog at some point
Does anyone know if I'm likely to be allowed to carry on my parasol if it won't fit in my suitcase? Or will they claim it's some kind of offensive weapon?
Good
I also got to pretend to be Chris Huhne, it was very exciting
Contact the airline. I wouldn't be surprised if security didn't let you take ti though. Can Nick not get one in Dubai?
Has anyone seen a film called Truth in 24?
I want this particular one. I guess I should see if they'll ship it there.
not yet
Gavin raves about it
yes, gavin has.
I want to..
I want to see it, and its free in hte american itunes store but i cannae find it in the uk one
never heard of it...
#probablynotasurprise...
If you say so.. he seems the most boring man since Red 5..
I got to pretend to be boring :D
T'is a documentary of the Le Mans 24 Hour Race in 2008
Are you going to spear the pilot with it?
chris huhne is nigel mansell? hope his headache went away.
I think Uncle Nige is positively excitig compared to Mr Huhne
okay, bed time. night all!! xxx
night lou
I want to write a blog entry and I'm fed up of writing about the FIA :(
night
Write about something fun :D
ooooh, write about your favourite made up circuit, take corners from different circuits etc
night lou
I was hoping to use it to avoid death from excessive sunniness but you never know...
'tis free on the US itunes store, which is where I got it.
*Shakes fist*
not free in uk, got to see how i can get hold of it because the only place i can find it is buying it from audi for $8
New IndyCar site in which after a race, rather than blog about it they just go and have a drink. Then blog about it...sometime later. The Sidepodway? :)
http://www.drunkchicane.com/
You could get a US itunes account. There are ways.
Did Jon just scratch his head?
I was to hte left of the guy in the black/brown shirt
ooh how do i do that?
Your mate Allan McNish probably has a copy
i like that concept.
I cant remember, but google will probably tell you. I think I had to find a voucher number or something.
Yeaaaaaaaaaaaaah. I was properly in shot. Thats made my week
:)
And they stalk as well as Amy and Lou. At Indy, they asked Justin Wilson if they remembered them from St Pete and he said "yeah, at the restaurant"..
Hahaa
brilliant
http://www.drunkchicane.com/the-incident/
Evening!
Hello
Hi
Ooooh you're the plane man. Do you think I'd be allowed to carry on a parasol? It's pretty flimsy and not in any way sharp. It's too big for a handbag though clearly.
Can't you wrap it up and put it in the wierd shapped bagage bit?
Sounds quite reasonable, should aqueeze into the overheads bins fine
I'd chance it
What weird bit? I'm sure I can find a tube to put it in, that's not a problem. I just don't have a very long suitcase and I don't think it would fit in or I'd happily check it.
Theres like a non-bag bagage part of the airport, like when you'd take ski's
hi bassano
There's the chance that they could pull it at the gate and it'll go in the bulk cargo [small, non-containerised portain at the rear of the a/c]
I might ask if I can check it in inside the tube. Emirates give anyone free extra allowance for golf clubs, I'd be annoyed if they charged for a flipping umbrella.
So long as it doesn't contain more than 100ml of liquid you'll be fine*
*I am not affiliated with Airport Security, your actual experience may vary.
They won't charge put I'd take it to the gate and see what happens
Oh, and good evening everyone.
I hear that may be ending soon [silly rule]
Hi Andy, how's your eye?
Something fun on my blog - especially for Christine :)
About time too. Don't they realise how difficult it is to mix a liquid explosive at 40,000 feet?
Utterly pointless rule. 100ml of nitroglycerine would make a big bang
hi andy
Pretty much OK again now, although I'm not allowed contact lenses for at least a month :( Makes reading serial numbers on ipods interesting.
Though the scanner would pick that up. Tis why they want it bagged and separate for xray
Big Picture on European floods
http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/2010/06/european_flooding.html
No glasses?
Glasses don't work for me, I have to wear RGP lenses.
:)
Train track in #17
!!
:D
Meant to include this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keratoconus
Hi
Oh very interesting.
I hate glasses. They give me a sea sick feeling.
There's no comparison for me. Glasses are better than nothing at all, but I'm borderline legal to drive with them and certainly wouldn't try at the moment.
With the lenses I have almost perfect binocular vision.
I've updated the blog entry with a specification for the car.
Yeah see I have perfect vision in one eye but I'm SHOCKINGLY long sighted in the other. To the extent that I can't see anything in focus longer than the length of my arm. I got too old before anyone really noticed this though, my brain refuses to co-operate with corrective lenses, I just feel nauseous.
panda car!
Anyone see the story about the coppers who borrowed an old police car? Rover SD1!
http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/3017289/Old-Bills-1983-Ashes-To-Ashes-style-car-catches-thieves.html
Competition: Italian GP weekend package from Virgin
Yoiu may as well
http://www.moneysupermarket.com/travel-insurance/competition/
You probably need to persevere, eventually your brain will adjust. For example, my left eye is more affected by Keratoconus than my right, but the left contact lens works better. This means when wearing glasses I have to let my right eye dominate, when wearing lenses, the left takes over.
Years ago there was a TV programme that got someone to wear special glasses that flipped her vision upside-down. It took about a week for her brain to start making sense of what it saw and she was able to do complex things like ride a bike quite happily.
I saw that. Very odd
Yeah I'd need to find a time when I didn't have to drive to do it though as, conversely, I'm pretty sure it would make me pretty unsafe. I guess when it gets down to it, I don't see the benefit. I can see perfectly well and I don't have to pay for glasses or contact lenses.
panda car! {Comment #652}
Yes :) Fun and it is... ...was... a Thursday (whether the rollover-hoop panda counts as a baby panda is negotiable).
