Hello my pretties, how are we on this fine Friday? I can't tell you how happy I am that it is Friday, as I am getting to the end of two rather tough weeks in the office. Nothing but a weekend full of Franck ahead of me, as well. But more of that in a moment. First up, here are some of the things we're talking about:

  • I wrote a post yesterday, picking up on some of the most recent comments from Ferrari chief Luca di Montezemolo. We know already that this man isn't shy about saying what he thinks, or simply trying to stir up trouble, but this time, it's all about the backmarkers. We've had loads of great comments pondering whether the cars at the back of the grid in 2010 are just too slow or not. The general consensus is that everyone has to start somewhere, but why not let us know what you think?
  • I saw a tweet yesterday highlighting some great pages on Viva F1 detailing all you need to know about each of the circuits on the calendar. Some great statistics and pictures to fill you in. Have a look at Europe as that is the next stop on our global tour this season.
  • The latest victim of F1.com's Secret Life series is Nico Rosberg. The interviews delve into things the drivers might rather you didn't know, although Nico says he hasn't cried at a film since he was seven years old. I find that hard to believe. Even I have cried at a film since then and I have a heart of stone.

That should do it for now. As ever, we'll be discussing the World Cup today in the dedicated thread. They will also be selecting the draw for Wimbledon today, so we'll find out who all our favourite tennis players will face in the coming weeks. Franck is racing this weekend in the Superleague Formula. It looks as though it might be another weekend of sport for us! So, I will see you in the very busy comments.

What did you think? I saw from the comments that you guys were watching it.

I had to torrent it to see it - which I had no problem with because it's available for free in the US anyway...

It's a mystery to me why it's not more widely available - I can think of plenty of Danes who would love to see it. It's a brilliant doco because it views the 2008 race inside out - it's the story of how the team won Le Mans. The emotion, the decisions, the glory, the defeat ... it's all there and I don't think you'll ever see such an in depth and revealing documentary about a race team like this...

Today I learned you can still buy Snickers ice creams in Wales. Is this purely a Wales thing, or is London going to come through for me when I arrive? Because I might cry if I am so close to them and can't have one.

ooh, I certainly can't remember all of them, theres been a lot. But the UK will be a whole new world. And I only have two days there! Bassano had better start stocking up the car.

its silly, they need a visual representation of it because they talked over the top of the placement of the top 32 seeds so I don't even know which of Novak and Andy are in Roger and Rafas sides.

  • Alison18/06/2010 at 09:15

  • Christine18/06/2010 at 09:16

Is there anything that's just awful that you'd recommend avoiding? I might need to create a shortlist before I arrive.

It depends on your taste, I suppose. Most of the fancy crisps and Walkers crisps are fairly harmless, even if you don't end up liking them. The only thing that is actually evil is these weird peanut puff things. It makes me gag just thinking about them.

  • Amy18/06/2010 at 09:16

I just hate cheese and onion. But you surely must have had those before so....

I do quite like those but they're not my first choice :D

  • Amy18/06/2010 at 09:19

10.17 am: Murray by the way is in Nadal's half of the draw, Djokovic in Federer's. Federer - Davydenko is a potential quarter, as are Djokovic - Roddic, Verdasco Murray and Soderling - Nadal.

Gah, that's all I wanted to know!

    Go on.

Wimbledon starts each night at 9pm. I am working 7.30-3.30 all week. If I get up at 7 each morning then stay awake til 3am or so I might die, so I am planning a post work nap, say between 5 and 9, then a post tennis sleep between 3 and 7. It might not work but I don't think I have a choice :D

    they have a roof now!

    they have a roof now!

    Only on one court.

  • Amy18/06/2010 at 09:34

    Only on one court.

true, but thats where most of the people I want to watch will be after about the second round. Last year they only used it once, no? That roof was a rain jinx.

  • Christine18/06/2010 at 09:35

true, but thats where most of the people I want to watch will be after about the second round. Last year they only used it once, no? That roof was a rain jinx.

I think you're right. And if I recall correctly, Murray moaned about the conditions under the roof. He would have moaned if he'd been rained off too, mind you.

Wimbledon: Into the women's, the following are seeded fourth-round match-ups: Serena - Sharapova, Na Li - Radwanska, Wozniacki - Azarenka, Pennetta - Stosur, Clijsters - Petrova, Wickmayer - Jankovic, Schiavone - Bartoli and finally Peer - Venus.

Seems like all the good players (read: ones I have heard of) are staying quite far apart till the later stages in the womens.

  • Amy18/06/2010 at 09:57

    From the great Ted K

"There may be a five-place grid penalty for Sebastian Vettel next week.

His gearbox problems occurred on the first weekend of a four-race cycle, so the team may face a grid drop in Valencia if they are unable to prove sufficient evident damage and change the broken parts in accordance with the rules."

Gascoyne: Jarno, when he was told, said, 'No, I don't want Heikki to feel that I am being favoured, please feel free to give [the new chassi] to Heikki". So I went up to Heikki and told him. Then he said, 'No, Jarno is struggling, give it to him!'

I think they both deserve points for that ;)

We are holding a special members' event on 12 July at the McLaren Technology Centre, Woking to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the membership programme. We are inviting you, as a Tier 2 member of our programme, to apply.

This is the third email I've got in a row for an event to be held at the MTC. I need to move to England :(

heheh it kind of sucks to be honest, their May competition prize was an MTC tour, their June competition prize is a photo with Jenson and Lewis at the MTC and now they're having a July MTC event. Way to alienate the foreigners :(

I'd recommend joining before Spa just on the off chance of a paddock tour. It's the only reason I joined in 2008 just before I went to my first race and it's paid off big time.

also.. if i do buy membership. will you come on the tour with me so i don't get lonely? :)

  • Amy18/06/2010 at 15:57

    but it's so expensive....

I guess that makes sense as a Jenson fan rather than a team fan, for me as a team fan all the merchandise you get is worth the same price as the membership anyway so all the competitions and paddock tours to me are just a bonus on top of that. But if you're not interested in McLaren hats and shirts it's a lot of money :D

  • Amy18/06/2010 at 15:58

If anyone is interested in such things, there is a MotoGP app which I guess is for phones and the like. They just followed me on Twitter for some crazy reason, though their twitter page doesn't include a link to the actual app...

    Nope

It brought itself back to life. I don't really know what to do with this hunk of junk though. I already tried restarting it. The Task Manager freezing is a step too far for me.... It's not even 18 months old. I don't get how computers break so quickly considering the price of them.

These 'helpful' developers like to include programs that install themselves and start themselves when the computer boots, so they are constantly running even if you only use the thing once every 3 months. It really slows everything down.

It shouldn't. Sounds like you have something using a lot of resource. Anything obvious in the processes list using lots of cpu or memory

I thought it would be the other way around, because I was never a good programmer and I love F1 history. Turns out the SQL queries were quite fun, and making my own entry system (I've forgotten everything about it now). Then someone offered to help because I didn't have enough time, and he set it up in MS Access for me, and copying results from books was no fun.

    Yes.

if you don't want to waste the effort, we should try and do something together with it. i've no idea what the content is, but i know access pretty well.

Oh wow I even have the original site from 2003. It doesn't work because it isn't on a webserver.

The first thing I did was a race schedule, I was so pleased with it and it is still better than anything out there in terms of ease of use IMO.

  • Pat W18/06/2010 at 21:52

It was supposed to be F1 race results from 1950 onwards, because pretty much only FORIX (and a guy called Geoff who was vaguely helping me) did it at the time. The plan was to have basic results while Geoff went into a high level of detail, then to expand mine to indycar and other stuff.

    Can do.

I'm not necessarily saying I want to do the results site again. Well, kind of, but lots of others have since sprung up and it could be duplication. And I only have about 3 years of data if that.

  • Pat W18/06/2010 at 21:59

Oh wow I even have the original site from 2003. It doesn't work because it isn't on a webserver.

The first thing I did was a race schedule, I was so pleased with it and it is still better than anything out there in terms of ease of use IMO.

good question. joe mentioned in the last show that blogs are easier than news sites, because you get to take days off. the more people move away from large bodies like haymarket, the less chance individuals have of reporting news 24/7.

so i guess we'll see more from the likes of adam cooper, maurice hamilton etc all running their own stories. james allen is a hint of the future maybe, but even with countless sponsorships and some original ideas, he's still skipping flyaway races.

less faceless sites are better though, because gmm can't put a face to their "news".

I don't tend to read him or James Allen a lot.

i get the impression he has a really good idea of where he's trying to get to, but he's let down by a lack of technical support / funding. he has the writing ability to carry it off, but not if he's not in the paddock.

what's worse is that he's not being open and honest about not being in the paddock. so he's updating the iphone app, sometimes from his living room. which i think is dishonest. but i also understand why he has to.

I don't think you can call James Allen's site a blog anymore - it's more of an online magazine isn't it?

  • Steven Roy18/06/2010 at 22:44

Hey Steven. What did you think of Truth in 24?

I found it really interesting. I loved the bits that showed the team working. Loved McNish telling the engineer what to tell whoever was in the car etc. Especially when he points at the time remaining and says you better tell him that just as TK comes on and asks the question.

  • Lukeh18/06/2010 at 22:44

I assume then when his website goes down it is the MFC equivalent of pages of a magazine stuck together until you frustrating rip them trying to get them open

i think they compliment each other well. joe steers clear of technical updates, which james does well. joe reports stuff you need to know. not sure if scarbs is involved in james' site, but he covers that sort of thing.

the twitter page is also vastly different from joe.

Since I consider a blog to be any site published using easy-update technology that automatically dates entries, both of them are blogs in my eyes. They're just doing quite different things with the technology (though Sidepodcast remains the gold standard in "origianl use of blog technology" ;) )

My first foray into F1 online was Yahoo! back in 1999. I continued using it until the redesign last year made the page inaccessible, though the way I used it had gradually changed from "hub of all activity" to "quick glance of what the gossip is so I know what keywords to look for on the serious sites today". It was only in December 2002 that I started adding other sites to the list - first the FIA's home page, then homeoff1.com (both of which are still in my "blogroll"). Pitpass and grandprix.com only made it into my search list three months after that and both remain on "blogroll".

  • James18/06/2010 at 22:58

P***pot has really gone downhill, but we've mentioned that before. For me it was always Autosport and to a lesser extent Grandprix.com, and the original f1.com. Always heard good things about the original Atlas but never properly got into it before the merger.

Actually the original original PF1 when Balfe ran it was a reasonable snarky/fun look at it, then something went wrong and it changed writers and Balfe set up Pitpass, which was okay for a while before he grew a massive chip on his shoulder

i had an error message updating air this morning, so went to adobe site to download direct. it said it was already installed.

Oh, so we were supposed to describe Liuzzi's off in qualifying in Turkey as "interesting" (since that's the nearest anyone's gone to really turning right at that corner)?
