Hello once again one and all, it's a Friday so that must mean it's my time to write up a daily and spread the good word to you all with some awesome links and some fun times for all to share. It's not been an excellent week for myself so I've decided to make today a Feel-Good-Friday for all to enjoy! Yay! There was quite the spectacle last night as Giggles and Christine had a game of Guess Who? over the internet to some success! Fantastic stuff! RG even has a great Wiki Page for this epic new championship. Onto the bullet points now though and wads of information to hopefully make your day.

  • Plenty of Formula 1 news came flooding into our feeds yesterday from allsorts of angles. First off, is this the end of the Red Bull story with Mark Webber or are we merely closing Chapter 2 of this story? They say that everything is settled in camp but we'll soon see just how true that is. Toro Rosso had plenty to celebrate by resigning their up and coming drivers Tim (Jaime Algeursauri) and Sebastien Buemi for another year, a move I feel perfect for the two drivers in having a secure drive and a chance to boost their experience. More news from the US as the Austin organisers for the United States GP have been talking up their plans and excitement for their future race. Seeing as Tilke is behind the track plans, let's hope it's more Turkey and less Abu Dhabi!
  • Of course, here at Sidepodcast we got the shock of the year in a massive tournament that is currently taking place. The World Cup is so last week, and now everyone should focus their attention upon the fantastic Character Cup 2010 that is taking place! The first match proved a massive shocker as Fernando Alonso did an Italy and went crumbling out of the tournament in the first round after a loss to Vitaly Petrov. Quite frankly I'm amazed that Petrov won but fair play! Today's match sees Sebastien Buemi facing Nico Hulkenburg so make sure you head over and vote! Well the panini-sticker collection NOOO howler from Switzerland get your vote or will you decide that the Valencian-barrier kicking Williams man deserves to go through?
  • And now for some epic brief Twitter news. You may have heard of a certain driver-commentator-Richard/Judy-legend around these parts by the name of Anthony Davidson. This miniscule legend of a man is a favourite to many you see, and thanks to the power of social networking and persuasion no doubt from the 5 Live F1 crew, Ant can now be found on Twitter! Woohoo!!! Make sure you follow him as I'm sure he'll have plenty to talk about when he gets to grips with the service... do you think Ant can say something in just 140 characters? I'm sure his sparring partner on the mic and other half of the duo Crofty will get him into it anyways.
  • We're just over halfway in the season now, so how are you enjoying F1 so far this year? For me it's been a pretty enjoyable season personally, so yesterday afternoon I decided to take a look at my race reviews from my blog and have another look at the races so far and how I've analysed them. In general the results are quite positive and I remembered how to use Excel again so a win-win situation I reckon! Do take a read though and feel free to post your opinions on the races we've had so far in 2010. Also remember to take a gander at leigh O'Gorman's excellent recap of his day at Silverstone as it's really fantastically written and worthwhile to spend your time checking it out, especially in the way Leigh has decided to tell his story. Love it!!
  • One very quick final thing for those who enjoy their simulation racing - you may be interested to know that if you own Forza Motorsport 3 you're now able to download the new McLaren MP4-12C super-duper-Ronspeak roadcar for the game. It does cost a few pound as it comes with a few other cars but if you fancy racing it in your game on the Xbox 360 then it's there waiting for you! Whilst on the subject of the 360, if you've played games on it then I'm sure you'll know about the Achievement system in all it's games (and the amazing sound it plays when you unlock one!). Achievements are just a way of getting replay value and that extra incentive into playing games and doing more than you'd normally do and it's a fantastic system that was explained and discussed into how they work yesterday evening from the Microsoft engineers. It's a very techy article but for those into that kind of thing I found it quite fascinating to understand how they get this quite vast system working quite well and the choices made along the way. PLINK!

I think that's enough for today, guys. It is the final day of the week before another weekend so remember to take it easy and enjoy yourselves. The weather isn't so nice in the UK so what better way to spend your day than to follow the many links included and indulge yourself? Head over to the Sidepodcast Wiki (which has been renovated and rehoused without the need for Nick Knowles, may I add) for a bit perhaps, then go and check out my movie reviews on my blog if you wish, or even play some Rollercoaster Tycoon (as recommended by myself) and then you could just spent some time checking out the new Sidepodcast photos from an Audience with Joe. Most importantly though, remember to join us in the comments and we'll have an awesome day commenting into the weekend!

We're just over halfway in the season now, so how are you enjoying F1 so far this year?

that's a timely question. more than i was, but not yet enough to buy a silverstone ticket probably sums it up. red bull shenanigans really are the entertainment of the season for me.

nice article. the offline stuff is especially good given that's sort of what we're working on for commenting.

    Ooh awesome! Brucie bonus :)

I just like reading about how people approach these type of things like the thought process and development cycle I suppose with web development and general computing type of stuff. The techy stuff as well impresses me but I can understand if that's not everyone's tastes :)

I'm really tired and grumpy after my course yesterday which was all round a bit of a nightmare.....

that typhoon was crazy. it changed course at the last second. we had no power for 16+ hours.

but from what i remember, the rain wasn't so bad. it was the howling wind that was scary.

  • Journeyer16/07/2010 at 06:53

Nick is off buying tickets for the AD GP unless you can talk some sense into him

You're going with him? Even if it produces crappy racing, it won't matter as much if the title is still up for grabs by then...

I don't think so. I think we're going to go to Aus together instead.

Oh I don't mean the GP. I mean we're going on holiday to Australia and then I won't be allowed anymore time off work so I can't really go anywhere until the new year.

  • F1Wolf16/07/2010 at 06:57

but from what i remember, the rain wasn't so bad. it was the howling wind that was scary.

we are probably too far away from it for the strong wind, but it felt like we are getting all the water

    haha will do :)

Slept a bit to adjust time zones. But by the end I just wanted to get off the plane. Very over it. KL had free wifi, but Dubai didn't. But I would still choose 2 stopovers as I couldn't sit on the plane for 12 hours or more. How many stopovers do you have to London?

I did watch some tv - Gavin & Stacey, Valentine's Day movie, etc.

If Robbie Williams can rejoin Take That, I think it's only fair we get to see five Backstreet Boys again.

  • RubberGoat16/07/2010 at 08:15

If Robbie Williams can rejoin Take That, I think it's only fair we get to see five Backstreet Boys again.

I almost fell over reading that. It's not as if they needed him back or he needed to re join, is it?

Do you think so? I know he's having a bit of a lull, but it's not as if he wasn't successful after leaving.

Anyway, it's nice - I even liked the last song they released...

  • Christine16/07/2010 at 08:18

  • Lukeh16/07/2010 at 08:19

Do you think so? I know he's having a bit of a lull, but it's not as if he wasn't successful after leaving.

Take That has been very successful and made ridiculous money since their 'rebirth' so to speak, whilst Robbie has produced two albums that really are quite bad compared to some of his other solo albums. I think he's definitely joining for his benefit more than the band needing him back as a whole.

  • Lukeh16/07/2010 at 08:20

He went wrong with the whole Rudebox ugh and never really recovered.

I like to pretend that album never happened :)

His newest album isn't as bad...but it's still bad compared to some of the stuff he has done before. I'm no fan but his earlier solo albums were very listenable and very strong quality.

  • RubberGoat16/07/2010 at 08:22

The only good thing about this rain is it means I don't have to move lots of boxes of old accounts filing down to the archive...

'archive' = old workshop around the corner where we pile up old stuff and forget about it

  • Pat W16/07/2010 at 09:31

You're right I'm in half term mood, really not interested in working :)

So I'm reading yesterday's live commentary of the Open and found this about the trophy..

The Claret Jug has certainly had some action in the last 12 months in the hands of Stewart Cink, who claimed victory at Turnberry last year by beating Tom Watson in a play-off. He filled it with Guinness (other stout-based drinks are available) while his children have drunk cola out of it. Cink then used it as part of his American Independence Day celebrations which saw the famous old trophy covered in barbecue baste. "I actually had to have barbecue sauce cleaned out of it," he explained. "I thought my buddy had cleaned it out when we were at our celebration but I noticed on the flight over to Dublin that some of it leaked into the case so I investigated and found there was still sauce inside. So I went and cleaned it in Dublin so it was in fit condition when it went back."

    You can't do that!!

  • RubberGoat16/07/2010 at 09:33

Sebastien Buemi has denied having committed to the Toro Rosso team for next year, despite claims from Franz Tost.

    ...

"I have not signed yet," Buemi was quoted as saying by Blick. "Also, there are some details that are missing, so the transfer market still open."

This is what is known as "reaping the whirlwind". They have used hype to create a huge fuss for each of their phones and other devices in the past... And now something that is relatively minor and doesn't affect most users is also being blown massively out of proportion. Some people do have a real issue (I can cause it to happen myself) but I haven't dropped a call, if I did regularly drop calls I can't imagine how annoying it would be. But from my understanding it's not actually worse than the old phone. It's just that you think you are going to get a signal and then you don't when you hold it like that. But Apple's PR is built on hype and so the faults get hyped too.

Superleague is very confusing with cars and teams changing all the time. It's like the Magical Roundabout of motorsport.

  • Christine16/07/2010 at 13:43

Presumably, from the way it is written, it is not Franck's choice? I'm going to need a wiki page with a list of my grudges, I think.

Right pretty people, the Wiki should all be linked together nicely now. You should be able to navigate anywhere you want to go via the sidebar and onwards.

I still don't vouch for the formatting of some of the pages, and there are a couple that need cleaning up, but mostly it's done.

I've also added a page: http://sidepodcast.wikia.com/wiki/Not_Quite_F1 and combined a few more into each other. We're getting somewhere, I think!

If my calculations are correct, there should be no orphaned pages left, although the list is cached so I can't tell until it updates.

Karun's mother is from Texas, which some still consider part of the US. Therefore, he's as close to a US driver as there is, which makes him my favorite driver. There was a Japanese Admiral named Yamamato at the beginning of WWII. Therefore Sakun should never be allowed to drive.

    We're just over halfway in the season now, so how are you enjoying F1 so far this year? {Original entry}

Quite a lot. Bahrain was a horrible omen but thankfully it proved a false one. There's been a lot to enjoy. That said, the most exciting two races I've seen this year have been in sportscars, which is something I wouldn't have ever imagined me saying this time last year (largely because back then I wouldn't have envisaged seeing 2 sportscar races in the first place)!

It seems fairly clear to me that they were told to give the position back. The stewards never give decisions on whether or not to give positions back. Charlie advises and the stewards normally agree with him apart from when Lewis overtook Kimi at Spa and Charlie said he was fine to have given it back and retaken it. Then the liar changed his mind after the race. Imagine football referees changing their decision after the match

  • Kathi16/07/2010 at 18:37

Yep, Amy and I will be leaving you guys in Brussels.

Am wondering about boot space too - hope all the luggage will fit!

I have a large case and I'm too tight to buy a smaller one especially :)

Emma and me could also take the train to Brussels and Bassano or you pick us up there?

  • Pat W16/07/2010 at 18:37

ferrari call charlie whiting a liar (of sorts): http://www.aut…s/report.php/id/85320

I can't understand why when asked 'is this the decision?', he said 'No, but that's how we see it.'

He needed to have said 'yes' in order for Alonso to have given the place back..

You can't ask him to give it back when there are cars between them.

  • Pat W16/07/2010 at 18:38

Emma and me could also take the train to Brussels and Bassano or you pick us up there?

When do you need to know? I don't think we'll know how much space there is until we pack the cars in London. I think it should be possible if you don't mind a squeeze between Spa and Brussels.

  • me16/07/2010 at 18:39

    that whiting quote again:

"we told them that immediately, right after the overtaking manoeuvre."

    ferrari say 1m 55s later.

It never happens like that. On the radio to the teams CHarlie gives advice and that is all. They are still living in the 70s. THe need one steward only and let him make decisions in real time like a football referee.

I believe Ferrari based on what Kubica has said about when he was told Ferrari would return the place. That mustn't have come from the Stewards, Charlie said that.

  • Steven Roy16/07/2010 at 18:44

I just love the idea of the FIA and Ferrari fighting. That is good for F1 and FOTA

That would come from Charlie too possibly with the advice of the stewards. Of course history shows believing CHarlie can cost you

Where do you start? Depends on what he is interested in. There are loads of books on individual historic drivers or teams. It also depends if the friend is interested in a particular period or not

Could someone please, please tell me that there are not people in the world that are really this stupid - I need reassurance...

    http://www.wir…010/07/digital-drugs/ {Comment #136}

In the future, "digital drugs" should be theoretically possible, but they'd have to be individually mapped out because the connections between frequencies heard and the pleasure centres of the brain differ between every individual. Otherwise the music industry would barely exist because everyone would buy the same few songs and ignore all other output.

Given that nobody has yet found a way of mapping those connections comprehensively (at the moment only the loosest establishment that such a connection exists and that it varies between individuals is possible), let alone synthesise them easily for a price a teenager is likely to be able to pay multiple times, the current i-dosing is clearly a big fat scam.

Yeah, I had to turn this off though. She took the ladies to Harrods to look at how they made up veg boxes and one of the women said they couldn't see how it was related to their busines?? It's too irritating to watch.

  • Pat W16/07/2010 at 22:30

I'm watching a programme about two women who've bought a greengrocers even though they don't like fruit...

I once heard about some people who run a Formula 1 website even though they don't like F1...

  • RG16/07/2010 at 22:30

he's still available for england? i assumed he was an ambassador or something.

He ruined his achilles. Knowing Capello's selection he'd have been in the team

I watched it and was stunned for the whole program. They didn't know how much they were spending or how much they were taking in.

Every program like that has people who are running failing business but are totally resistant to change. The last one of hers that was on was about a shop selling furniture and home fittings. You have to watch that all the way through. Just don't watch it if you have a headache

  • Alison16/07/2010 at 22:35

Yeah that was mental. They're lucky they make a loss or they'd be tax evading for sure.

Beckham came across really well there. He is going to be great when he gives up football and is on TV all the time. I think there is a little bit of Jackie Stewart there.

It's hard to believe when the majority of footballers have no concept of reality that someone in his position is so grounded.

he is a lit better with interviews than people give him credit IMO. He came across excellent in that though definitely.

Early in his career he was terrible but now he has it totally sussed.

I thought you had stopped watching. Besides there is nothing on show. Mary woman makes it sound like they are going to be spread out naked on a load of Brussel sprouts but they are just covered in vegetables

  • Alison16/07/2010 at 22:55

Yeah I couldn't find anything better to watch. They're not going to keep it up, it's obvious. They're too happy to plod along rather than grow their business.

  • Steven Roy16/07/2010 at 22:57

they're not needed in the comments either.

Like at the 4 weeks later thingy, they've only got an extra 10 customers to take the veggie boxes. That's ridiculous. They can't be offering them to anyone...

  • Alison16/07/2010 at 22:58

They simply sold to people who asked for them. They made no effort to sell

Any business you ever go near will tell you that if you offer people things, more often than not they buy them. They should tell every person that comes in their shop that they'll deliver a fresh box to them once or twice a week.

The thing that annoyed me is Marywoman lead them by the hand and showed them that people wanted to buy and there was guaranteed money in it and still they didn't do anything about it.

  • Alison16/07/2010 at 23:17

Yeah, they're all a bit nuts. If I were Mary, I'd not bother and go home. Clearly those people are beyond help if they think the most sensible solution to a cold shop is to wear their pyjamas to work....

Well erm they're lucky they found each other.... I guess that at least keeps them relatively contained.
