Hello and Welcome to Thursday, yep its that time of the week again the weekend is so close but yet still so far away. This week there is no F1 to look forward to this weekend but there is Superleague which means one Franck Montagny will be racing.

  • The Character Cup got underway yesterday with last years winner Fernando Alonso facing off against Vitaly Petrov, you can find more details on the cup and the voting over on this post.
  • Speaking of Petrov his team Renault have said that his future with the team is in his hands, its up to him to put in the results to stay on next year. With no seats at the "top 4" teams the second Renault seat will highly sought after.
  • Over on Sidepodcast's Flickr some pictures of Felipe Massa have appeared from whilst he was here for the British Grand Prix. I like this one in particular because its smiley Felipe.
  • Renault are aiming to get the F-Duct/the really clever thing McLaren came up with and everyone's copied/Rear wing stalling device on their car by the race in Belgium at Spa Francorchamps.
  • It was announced yesterday that the teams in IndyCar will be allowed to introduce their own aero kits to a new spec-Dallara chassis from 2012.
  • Just when you thought all the sport was over, turns out it isn't. RG has a brilliant post on the Open Championship at St. Andrews, the oldest golf course in the world.
  • Amazon have opened a Grocery section (yes you read that right, groceries), Christine has blogged her thoughts about it and in particular the fact that Lucky Charms are available.
  • And finally as promised last week a Doctor Who mention, now I was asked to make note of the number times the Doctor says "Pond" in the recent series but I haven't had time to watch all the episodes so instead I'm giving you a video, 348 ways to use a sonic screwdriver!

That about wraps up today's post all that is left is for me to wish you good day and I shall see you in the comments!

My Indy post never happened, I got distracted with dinner, the quiz, the Eurotunnel website (the last piece of the Spa puzzle!) and the announcement transcripts. I'll write something after work.

I'm doing something on Saturday. I'll probably do a chassis/Toronto double if you want

  • Pat W15/07/2010 at 00:18

Now I must sleep, another evening draws to a premature close.

I wonder if I'll stick to my plan of getting to work 15 minutes early. I have to do that one day per week to top up my hours, last week I did it on a Friday and that was not good, since Thursday's are bad anyway let's try that..

i'm not surprised. this was always gonna be a PR statement. webber's actions are a better indicator than "his" statements are, though...

Important safety announcement relating to Giggles Radio show... Having looked at my train timetable I don't think I can safely commit to a giggles radio show this Sunday... So I think I best postpone it for a week... Sorry everyone but I'd rather be sure than rushing about like a mad headless loon-bucket.

I will be traveling all the way down from right near where Alison lives on the day and you know what trains are like - they are of the outside - and therefore are unreliable.

The only oddly named teacher I can recall is Mr Tucker, which you can imagine is rather unfortunate for rhyming reasons. But you wouldn't mess with him because he used to play rugby and he was enormous.

    Also

Bourdais also blamed crashes at Magny-Cours and Jarama for restricting the team's time to fixing accident damage, rather than preparing the car between races.

Preeeeeeeeetty sure one of them is his fault. Ahem.

    Anyone reads German?

    Villeneuve Racing

I'm seeing Formel 1 and "Villenueve Racing" in the same story. BAR: The Sequel?

Sounds like he wants to start his own team, then the article speculates who the other candidates for the 13th team are...

Surely Epsilon must STILL be the favorites at this point. At least I hope they are. I don't see how Villeneuve Racing can be any more successful than BAR was 11 years ago, to be honest.

  • Alex Andronov15/07/2010 at 11:52

by the way... how much sidepodcast does one man need?

Well it's actually to stop me trying to multitask so I tend to run with full screen remotely on the other machine and so I don't keep having to switch computer I fire up a doohicky.

But then of course I have these two machines for a reason so when I am forced to go back I want to have a doohicky there too. But basically it's to stop me from switching back and forth for the doohicky...

So answer your question... Apparently a lot.

Aha, he reminds us the next round is Finland!

"...one of the highlights of the year. And this year, with a Finnish Formula 1 world champion at the sharp end of the field, there's going to be some serious interest in the event. This is good news for everybody involved in the sport, with the possible exception of Raikkonen himself. Might be time for Kimi to invest in an even bigger hat and some even darker shades."

Speaking of Kimi, he is not going to Renault. He is not going to Mercedes either. Not confirmed yet but Red Bull / Citroen are after him to continue.

"I don't miss Formula 1 and I am enjoying what I am doing now," Raikkonen said at the Bulgarian round of the WRC last weekend. http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/85282

Unfortunately that's the only line they have, but if you follow Kimi-speak that's as good as a confirmation isn't it?

All he has to do is design a couple of wings and an engine cover and he has a 'Lotus'. There will be plenty like him to follow I reckon...

  • Pat W15/07/2010 at 12:46

presumably he's already involved with taku's car?

Well that's the thing, I didn't think he was. I thought he ran the F1 team only and the investment in IndyCar was a decision taken higher up the chain.

Now that we also know he's buying the name 'Team Lotus', and Joe speculated the other day about taking over Proton... perhaps he has a far larger role than I had imagined, or is moving himself into one.

It'll need the right controls. And they won't get what they are pitching for. They called on everyone from small design firms and universities right up to Lockheed. They won't get any of those. What they'll get is racing companies making their own bits, whether they be teams or engine makers or what have you.

Then in a year or two, one will be the only solution (as they all have the same common bits), so everyone will buy that kit and the cars will look the same...

I think it'll take longer than that, and after 5 years perhaps they can make a new tub and change the specs so people have to make new kits.

  • me15/07/2010 at 13:40

there is another flaw i've found, alex. and that is facebook ignores all #text in links. so linking to: http://writetoreply.org/doodlings/rt-hon-dr-vince-cable-mp-higher-education-speech-15710-commentable/#7

simply shares the header text and first line, not the paragraph you meant. that's kinda delayed stuff here. every paragraph needs its own page, basically.

  • Alex Andronov15/07/2010 at 13:44

    That's really annoying.

However if you did that it could point to how you deal with the google fast page loading in that you would load the part of the page you linked to first and then asynchronously load the parts before and after. Although that's a lot of work.

  • me15/07/2010 at 13:44

it is. they've broken the web in that respect. however, if you want people to comment on specific paragraph, maybe a page is necessary anyhow?

Well that wasn't what I was originally talking about months ago... What I was saying was that it would be neat if there was a way to say, I agree with what was said here in this long article I found... here in paragraph 73... but you can't just link to paragraph 73 annoyingly.

  • me15/07/2010 at 13:47

to me, it makes more sense on fbfb, you could comment on a specific event. rather than on the whole page. originally was talking about quoting and linking to specific bits of an article for sharing purposes. comments are a bonus i guess.

    Got ya.

I was just thinking that reading and writing comments in the middle of a post would be weird, because you haven't got the whole context yet. Plus, sometimes you have things to say about several parts of something, so you would have to say: pls refer to my comment on paragraph 72 I also think...

But for linking and sharing, I totally get it. Although you might still have the context issue.

  • Alex Andronov15/07/2010 at 14:05

that's kinda how i see a paragraph / event appearing.

Yeah I would guess... I the thing is that a paragraph is part of an article that's the only difference I guess... I'm going to take the http off this so it doesn't get shortened but... Paragraph 78 of (presumably one of Lukeh's) daily's:

    sidepodcast.com/2010/07/15/daily-15th-july-2010/78/

Could open the article highlight the paragraph and then on document ready add to the end:

    sidepodcast.com/2010/07/15/daily-15th-july-2010/78/#78

But as you say if document ready isn't fast enough then it won't look very smooth

    night amy

  • me15/07/2010 at 14:08

    sidepodcast.com/2010/07/15/daily-15th-july-2010/78/

it could be more semantic than that:

    sidepodcast.com/2010/07/15/daily-15th-july-2010/paragraph/78/

    and

    sidepodcast.com/2010/07/15/daily-15th-july-2010/comment/15/paragraph/2/

on the assumption that comments have paragraphs that you may want to quote.

But as you say if document ready isn't fast enough then it won't look very smooth

you're also relying on everybody have javascript enabled, which on mobile phones / opera iphone browser isn't the case.

my biggest complaint on the testing, everyone is complaining about Ferrari and Mercedes using the loophole but McLaren have as well, in the scalextric video there were clips of this year McLaren, yet no one mentions that.

i see another one. mclaren never 'raced' there new diffuser, so they still couldn't use it on a filming day, yet ferrari running around with a disabled f-duct can 'film' that all day long.

  • Lukeh15/07/2010 at 16:22

So Austin are wanting to make a track that is a 'throwback to classic tracks':

    http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/85287

It sounds quite promising until you get to the dreaded paragraph:

Hellmund said that final details of the location of the track will be released imminently, and that the actual layout should be made public in the next few weeks. He said he was excited by what he had seen from the plans, being put together by F1 circuit designer Hermann Tilke.

Although it will have elevation apparently. Maybe of the U2 variety.

  • Journeyer15/07/2010 at 16:23

Many forget Turkey is a good Tilke track, and that had lots of gradient changes. I wouldn't give up on this one so quickly.

I must admit, I'm going to ignore the fact Tilke is designing it, its promising elevation and y'know, he didn't have that for Shanghai and all that so, you never know.

    You'll recognise Eple

    I do!!! :)

  • Lukeh15/07/2010 at 16:30

Okay what about So Easy from the earlier album?

    oh I recognise that!!

  • Alex Andronov15/07/2010 at 16:31

    oh I recognise that!!

    Twas in an advert.

Remember the golden rule of Modern Music for Lukeh...

It's okay if it's been in an advert, a computer game or the Muse playlist :)

  • Lukeh15/07/2010 at 16:32

It's okay if it's been in an advert, a computer game or the Muse playlist :)

I recognise songs from the radio too! Granted this be none of the mainstream radio stations... :)

  • Pat W15/07/2010 at 16:32

The song I played was "This must be it".

Ooh I don't know that one

  • Alex Andronov15/07/2010 at 16:32

Ooh I don't know that one

    It's from the new album...

Is it the in car radio in GTA?

  • Pat W15/07/2010 at 16:34

So Austin are wanting to make a track that is a 'throwback to classic tracks':

I don't want throwbacks :( Do something new and original.

  • Lukeh15/07/2010 at 16:34

Is it the in car radio in GTA?

Alex you're silly. It's more local stuff like Nation Radio or even on a wide scale Absolute Radio...

...although I do definitely recognise lots of music from the GTA games :P it's not my fault they do them so well!

  • Alison15/07/2010 at 16:34

I was late for my course today due to train based disaster and they sent me home. Luckily I managed to get on the phone and they've let me do it in the end :) Alison 1 train 0

  • Lukeh15/07/2010 at 16:35

...although I do definitely recognise lots of music from the GTA games :P it's not my fault they do them so well!

Especially vice city which has the best. 80s. soundtrack. for. a. game. ever.

Which I suppose isn't exactly a prestigious prize many are fighting for.

  • Alex Andronov15/07/2010 at 16:35

Alex you're silly. It's more local stuff like Nation Radio or even on a wide scale Absolute Radio...

I was only pulling your leg :)

  • Journeyer15/07/2010 at 16:35

I don't want throwbacks :( Do something new and original.

I think Tilke wants to play it safe this time, lest we end up with another Shanghai, or worse, Abu Dhabi.

Then again, wasn't this exactly what Magny-Cours tried to do?

  • Lukeh15/07/2010 at 16:36

I was only pulling your leg :)

I wondered why I was falling off the couch :)

  • Pat W15/07/2010 at 16:37

Okay what about So Easy from the earlier album?

    oh I recognise that!!

    Ahh me too!

They are a band that has been on my 'investigate' list for some years, somehow never did.

  • Alex Andronov15/07/2010 at 16:37

Which I suppose isn't exactly a prestigious prize many are fighting for.

I've heard there's going to be an excellent soundtrack in Duke Nukem Forever ;)

  • Lukeh15/07/2010 at 16:37

I've heard there's going to be an excellent soundtrack in Duke Nukem Forever ;)

I'm sure it'll be fabulous when it comes out.

    In 2038.

    In bizarroworld.

  • Pat W15/07/2010 at 16:38

I think Tilke wants to play it safe this time, lest we end up with another Shanghai, or worse, Abu Dhabi.

He's played it safe with practically every track so far. Now he has elevation to play with he can hope to create something special.

  • Pat W15/07/2010 at 16:38

    Ahh me too!

They are a band that has been on my 'investigate' list for some years, somehow never did.

I always liked Poor Leno though

  • lou15/07/2010 at 16:47

I still think you'd like some radio one shows :)

  • lou15/07/2010 at 16:48

I wondered why I was falling off the couch :)

speaking of falling off the sofa the dog has pulled me off this sofa 3 times this week

  • Lukeh15/07/2010 at 16:53

I still think you'd like some radio one shows :)

I don't have anything wrong with the shows, it's the music that puts me off. :(

Although I really like the stuff zane lowe usually plays on a good evening. Other times it can be annoying, I'm horribly fussy like that. I blame modern music *grumbles*

  • Pat W15/07/2010 at 16:54

I don't have anything wrong with the shows, it's the music that puts me off. :(

    Ditto, for some of them

    have you listened to 6music?

I have a few times. I rarely listen to any BBC stations

  • lou15/07/2010 at 17:05

I find that so strange, not that there is anything wrong with that but I don't think I listen or watch anything that isn't related to the BBC.... I blame iplayer

Just found this on the ferrari site, Alonso's radio after the race:

“OK guys, keep your heads up, heads up. We will win the championship,” said Fernando over the radio. “We are only halfway through the season and there is plenty of time to recover. We have a great car and we proved that to everyone this weekend and confirmed it with this fastest race lap. It is only the first half and we know we have to do better in the second one and we will do exactly that. Well done all of you for this weekend: whatever the result, we have done a good job. Come on! There’s plenty of time to catch up.”

Then came the reply from his race engineer, Andrea Stella, who certainly summed up the feelings of the whole team:

“Don’t worry, no one is giving up. We are all behind you, we want the same thing and we will fight right to the end to get it.”

    The guy never gives up.

For extra info the thing that was propping up the board game was copies of the second draft of my new upcoming novel that had come back from people reviewing it.

  • Pat W15/07/2010 at 19:57

That was a bit of unexpected fun. Any ideas for other games?

Surely you just need a piece of paper (graph paper works best) to play battleships?

  • Alex Andronov15/07/2010 at 20:07

Surely you just need a piece of paper (graph paper works best) to play battleships?

Oh that's all you need sure... But I think I have the electronic one with lights and noises and stuff... It was one of my cousins so I never had it as a kid... but when he moved to Australia... BOOM! Or at least I think boom, but I can't remember.

I had an electronic one. When you turned it said in a booming voice, "this game is a battle of wits, enter your ships positions".

I'm not sure how you'd work it online though..

They never invest in anyone except the last one they show, and maybe the one at halfway. They need to shake up the way they show them.

I just wish they would stop showing trailers for later in the show or for the next show. I want the impact of the thing and not have an opinion beforehand

  • Steven Roy15/07/2010 at 20:57

MENTAL! Who goes on the tv in their underwear?

Not someone who wants to be taken seriously in business.

My brother and I used to play that on the MSX. That had the problem that each of us had to leave the room after our turns.

Setting a time limit per turn might help make the online version work better...

that especially. i really like people having conversations that mean nothing to me. tennis, speedway, cricket all make for great voyeuristic commenting, just to sit back and watch go by.

golf has to be the prime candidate for speed sporting. they should put the ball on the green(er) bit and hit it from there. maybe starting on the 18th.

i likes this. and make them do fun stuff like, if they can clear the bunker without touching it, then they get shots taken off their golfer-man

  • Lukeh15/07/2010 at 22:46
