Hello and welcome to Wednesday, the middle of the week, when we all start looking forward to the next weekend, rather than back at the days just gone. Gavin is hosting family today, I believe, so I am here to guide you through what we are talking about right now:
- Marilene wrote a post yesterday that sparked off some interesting discussion about the nature of the stewarding process - whether the revamped ideas works or not, and what you think could be done to improve the way things unfold during a race. Make sure you have a read, and vote in the poll. We like polls.
- Also on a similar subject, Manipe F1 went straight to the heart of the matter to talk to Stefano Domenicali and has published his findings.
- We also published the fourth part in our journey around the globe with Alex Snell - this time recapping his adventures in Turkey and Canada. They are two vastly different experiences, I can tell you now!
- Elsewhere, Jenson Button is rubbing his hands together in glee at the prospect of in-fighting at Red Bull. He says that whilst they are busy discussing how they can move forward from the recent problems, and where they go from here, he and Lewis are busy working together and can help each other make great strides forward. The championship is certainly not over yet!
- A final quick note that I caved in to the demands for Rubens Barrichello to get some points in the rankings this week. The Brazilian did a fine job on Top Gear even if he did crush most of my Stig related illusions. I'll get over it. You can review the revised points here.
That's all for now, I hope you're having a good week so far, I know I am most certainly not. Moving house is never easy, even though we do it so often it should be old hat by now. Anyway, be good and I will see you in the comments.
Moving again? You lot are crazy :)
Go Ron!
ugh, don't even go there. on the plus side, no more books.
I need to send Zoe over to stay with you two for a bit of re-educating :)
no need. tell her she has to shift all of her paperbacks to a far of location, plus the bookcases, all by herself. see how many make it there.
It was clearly a fast daysince the ginger kid from Harry Potter set the fastest celebrity lap as well. Maybe the track temp was high or there had been a lot of running on it so that it wasn't as green as normal. The Stig is ace but just wait till Lewis gets a dry run. That will shatter a few people's illusions
Rupert Grint. All I know was he's a Spurs fan...and now also that he owns a Ice Cream van...not sure how he was fast then....
I think we can prove the Stig is not God then..
There is an old Nigel Roebuck column I have quoted for 25-ish years. Nigel dies and goes upstairs. St Pete meets him an asks his job. Roebuck says he writes about motor racing. St Pete tells him he is going to love the local track and beams the two of them over. Just as they arrive a flat 12 Ferrari engine can be heard being thrashed within an inch of its life then a red car with number 27 on it appears over a rise. It is Gilles. For it is written. He bangs it down a gear and slides it into the right hand corner in fornt of them. Just then a black and gold Lotus with a yellow helmeted driver arrives and turns in without losing any speed and tries to go round the outside of Gilles. As Gilles powers away the Lotus spins then the driver plants the throttle, spin turns it and takes of after the Ferrari.
Roebuck turns to St Pete and said he didn't know Senna was here. St Pet says he is not. That ws Jesus. He just thinks he is Senna.
I have been working on this week's game scores.
Ping - - http://toomuchracing.com/2010/07/14/tmr-game-week-25/
Hopefully I copied the spreadsheet correctly, I'm too tired to check
Last piece of business before bed is to mention that at 5.30pm UK time there is the biggest announcement in modern Indy car history since the end of the war: The announcement of the 2012 chassis plan. I say 'plan', because there is a rumour they haven't picked from one of the five options, there is a rumour they've opened it up to competition under a budget cap. I really hope that's true and I really hope we get proper-looking Indycars again. It will be streamed live on indycar.com and I hope to be home in time to see it, assuming the feed works.
Goodnight!
couple of pics from friday morning: http://www.flickr.com/photos/sidepodcast/sets/72157624489542118/
will finish sorting the remainder tomorrow.
Mooorning :)
moooooooorrrrrrnnnnnnnnniiiiiing :)
Morning!
Am at the office today. Normally, I'd be working from home, but then, a storm literally went over us last night. Triggered a massive blackout, 10M+ affected. At least there's a generator here...
Morning all.
In testament to my having a stupid week, we have ridiculous computer problems that means no one can work... except me! Brilliant.
Morning everyone,
Today is D-Day for the new IndyCar chassis announcement
:)
Morning Christine and thanks for filling in for me.
Yes, I was hosting family, and the evening went rather well, but ended on a sour note as we had the usual technophobe troubles and then the in-laws decided to keep getting up every 5 minutes instead of sleeping...
Morning
Ahhh typical!
Today is the relaunch of the BBC News site
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/
A lot of people that comment here are in IT - anything we can do to help? :P
Hehe, I have no idea. Not my department.
Did you turn it off and turn it on again?
Is it plugged in?
Break Christine's computer too? :)
A post: http://smarterthanyouraverage.com/2010/07/14/magically-delicious/
That's what I meant!
must.explain.better
Ooh, sorry. :)
i like that they've update the look, but i think they could have done a better job.
I don't understand the top menu bar. They made a big fuss about changing it all across the sites so that they would look the same and be consistent... but the news one is different.
Yes. It is a good look but they seem insistent on promoting TV stuff or audio/video rather than telling me the news in text, which is what I want else I'd use iPlayer for a news bulletin.
That is the first thing I picked up on! :D
indeed, also the articles have a big white gap down the right hand side. they really should have down a beta of the new site.
There's something about the way the BBC designs are going that I don't like, though I don't know what it is.
I find the Doctor Who one unusable now, the iPlayer Beta design is weird, and this news homepage doesn't appeal, although it's early days with that obviously.
It's all just too big and bold and there's too much information.
It might just be me, though.
Too much but also too little all at once. It's a mess.
I cannot stand the new iPlayer Beta design - it's so ugly and a pain to use
:/
Morning guys
Just been checking out the BBC News beta... not sure if I like it or nto. I kinda do, but it's still mega cluttered. Could be worse, could be Digital Spy's new layout
I definitely like the look of the individual stories better. Although that's true of digital spy too. It seems to be homepages that are the problem.
Yeah there's a problem with finding what you want.
I'm unsure why these websites seem to insist on trying to get all the information on the homepage. It would be far happier having what news I want only rather than being filled up with irrelevant lists and boxes I'll never read
Is it Thursday?
Only in Greenland
All week apparently!
...it is Bastille Day though
I think they still haven't got right telling you which bits are connected and which bits aren't makes everything seem a bit... er... plonked.
I also don't like that most popular isn't on the page without scrolling any more
And why is it suddenly bbc.co.uk/news rather than news.bbc.co.uk?
It's seriously fast though.
That is easier tbh. That's normally why I type in by accident if it's what I want. Maybe they noticed most people came through that way.
Oh dear :)
I hate the big box encouraging you to tell them where you are to get the weather. It's taking up pointless room and I don't want the weather.... I could look outside or go to the weather bit....
This guy has a redesigned guardian website that basically strips away everything... He doesn't even offer a homepage...
http://guardian.gyford.com/
Allez!
I have made my own improvement for clearing up the News homepage
http://twitpic.com/255rnm
I was totally sure it was going to be every news story being, "Rubens faster than the stig"
That's interesting.
Quite frankly I'm disgusted BBC News isn't still reporting it :)
Swipable on the iPad... Keyboard operable on the computer
It's a great newspaper replacement. If you want to sit and browse. Not so great for specific story finding.
Yeah definitely.
I like it.
That's really horrible UI... I have only just noticed after several looks that most of that giant big gray weather box is actually news stories for my current location. I skipped the whole box because I thought it was weather.
Pamela is in Paris and I am in rainy cold Melbourne. Boo.
Don't panic, it's raining in Paris too.
is it raining in Nice? Apparently thats the next stop today.
I have been watching some more films
http://toata.wordpress.com/2010/07/14/96-movie-reviews-iv/
No, it appears to be sunny there.
Googling Nice Weather brought up different results to Paris Weather though. :)
heheheh stupid place name that is actually a word
Mr C is going to be really pleased:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/10623423
Hopefully Mr C will be able to draw sailboats with his friend pretty soon :)
Noooooo it's scary Milo.......
I reaaaaaaaally don't like it! Although it's very smart. So was SkyNet though and we all know how that turned out.
Although Peter Molyneux is one of my game developer idols, the man is a genius. Very passionate about what he works on.
Milo: "Hello Lukeh..."
Lukeh: "Hello Milo."
Milo: "What would you like to do today?"
Lukeh: "Open the pod bay doors."
Milo: "I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that."
:D
It's very very smart but just so bizarre to watch. I remember watching the E3 conference last year when they unveiled it and it was quite mindblowing.
Can you imagine how far technology can get if it;s capable of such things in that video at a simple stage? Madness.
Quite looking forward to seeing video from the TED conference when it's released of what it's like a year on.
It is crazy... I had to go and look up the actual wording of that 2001 quote. The whole scene always gives me shivers:
We are going to get fridges and microwaves being like HAL one day, mark my words :)
I actually consider it to be one of the freakiest/scaryist films ever made; which is odd considering it has a "G" rating
:D :D :D
I really loved the book but the movie does my head in, sadly.
To be honest, I really don't think it's the healthiest invention I've ever seen by a long shot
Dave: HAL, can you warm up my sausage roll for me?
HAL: I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that.
Dave Bowman: What's the problem?
HAL: I think you know what the problem is just as well as I do.
Dave Bowman: What are you talking about, HAL?
HAL: This sausage roll is too important for me to allow you to jeopardize it.
Dave Bowman: I don't know what you're talking about, HAL.
HAL: I know that you're trying to heat up a sausage roll that's not a Greggs Sausage Roll, Dave, and I'm afraid that's something I cannot allow to happen.
Dave Bowman: Where the hell'd you get that idea, HAL?
HAL: Dave, although you took very thorough precautions in the pod against my hearing you, I could see you switched the wrapping paper.
Dave Bowman: Alright, HAL. I'll heat it up in the oven then.
HAL: Without your oven gloves, Dave, you're going to find that rather difficult.
Dave Bowman: HAL, I won't argue with you anymore. warm up the sausage roll.
HAL: Dave, this conversation can serve no purpose anymore. Goodbye.
Would you like some toast?
Love both the 2001 book and film as well as their eventual sequel, but didn't like the last two books at all.
The sequel book is great, haven't seen the film yet. As I have read them in the years they represent, I doubt I'll read the next two ;)
Best of luck reading 3001 when you eventually get around to it
;)
It'll be just like Futurama
Have you not seen Futurama?
You're a Pizza delivery boy??
ZING!
I'm Bender, baby! WOO! *struts*
That's Bender Bending Rodríguez to you.
Sebastien Ogier is choosing between staying with Citroen or moving to Ford
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/85264
#ForRG
Oooh, I imagine Citroen is a better choice right?
You'd think so but politically he'd be better off at Ford unless he can wait for Loeb to retire. And there are new cars next year so the balance could change.
ummm...
At the moment, the technology is still in development and Microsoft has no plans to release it, he said.
I see, so Ford might not be too bad an option then.
Possibly. He'd have to contend with Hirvonen and Latvala, I'm not sure if trying to beat two really good drivers is better than trying to beat one great one. He needs to bear in mind he's turning down potential Citroen loyalty which could pay off later, and they've promoted him to the top team already on some rounds.
Tough choice.
i've decided i don't have the best job in the world, because the best job in the world surely comes with a pa / secretary. i must aim higher.
the best job in the world would be 'oh yes sir, please, take some time off to go to belgium, and while you're at it, here is some more money to pay for the trip'
And the worst job in the world is to be a PA/secretary to that person, surely?
you don't fancy being my pa? i'm quite nice really.
Yes but the commute to Rockall would be a bit long, even though I live near an airport.
Plus I like the hotdogs here...
The pay is not very good.
that too. it really isn't the best job is it :(
:)
so i need a good job, that pays PA's a high salary? i'm going to have to aim much, much higher.
Afternoon everyone,
I have finally taken the plunge and bought a car...
no one mentions how terrifying it is!
What would you use this PA / Secretary for? Typing your comments on Sidepodcast?
It's very handy having an assistant.
the buying of the car or the driving?
Wait until you sell it, that's worse..
Get your PA to do it for you then? ;)
it would improve the spelling.
The Buying!
I've only ever bought one car and my dad helped so it was easy :D
So what did you buy?
there might be caps too
win/win.
And in which country?
hehe one of my bosses had a secretary for a week, then decided his life wasnt hectic enough to need one...
I think their is a big split between people who need PA's and people who have them!
alistair says caps are overrated
he's right too.
life isn't hectic. it's just real life bores me silly.
Its over here in dubai...
2 tone paint, v6, 4.0L engine lots of fun stuff :)
Beemer or something else?
By the way, I'm listening to your favourite Motorsports podcast who are bashing Crofty and Ant right now for their Goodwood FoS coverage...
i guess its good you live in an oil-rich area :D
Ive posted it before and you all said it was ugly...
But i persisted!
Its the same as this, same colour, but without the roof rack
It's the bits where somebody contacts you to have a meeting and you say yes and then you remember that you have to book a meeting room and show up and stuff.
Toyota?
http://carsmedia.ign.com/cars/image/article/721/721170/07_fj_cruiser11_1153958699.jpg
One of these days I'm going to write a blog post entitled, "The Downfall of Radio Le Mans"
legends. whoops, i mean *******
Oh Dear...
It just scares me that so many people listen to them!
#presentcompanyexcepted ;)
Oh please do.
It's ugly, but in a cool way. I like that it's a retro Landy :)
I should scare you, in fairness ;)
that kinda thing. anything that doesn't involving creating awesome stuff really.
2,000,000+ apparently
3,000,000 in Le Mans Week.
I'm 20 of those
Genius
http://www.thedailymash.co.uk/sport/sport-headlines/webber-to-start-next-race-in-a-%2798-punto-201007122898/
:)
You know what I'd like my personal assistant to do? Book these 14 airplane tickets I am trying to deal with.
I have booked many flights! And now Easyjet won't stop emailing me to tell me my flights have changed.
you have to aim higher too
I have got as far as having a team assistant, I think a personal assistant would get bored.
of commenting?
Where are you going that requires 7 flights to get to and 7 back? :)
I'd like a personal assistant to do all that "job stuff" I actually get paid for, so I have time to do all the fun stuff that doesn't pay.
The CEO's personal assistant does do all his personal stuff (like this flight booking and stuff which is nothing to do with work).
She actually even has power of attorney on his bank accounts!
I share an assistant //gopher//minion with my boss, but i dont think of myself as being all that important
You're right it's actually 28 tickets... It's 14 people travelling to Amsterdam and back.
Tea, assistant?? So, you're part of the team basically...?
Team assistant (obviously)
*
Rofl! "The controversy started before the Silverstone race when Webber's car was stripped of 90% of its parts to make an amusing sculpture for Vettel's dressing room."
Although a tea assistant would be useful too.
surely you're not paid to book flights? surely you're overpaid to be doing that?
Well I have a team of people who work for me there is an assistant assigned to the team.
Very handy for when the office runs out of sugar
But it's for my brother's stag do... Not really work related.
Uh-huh
Interesting..........................
ahh, you got volunteered. told outside = hassle.
Sometimes the word 'no' can be so beautiful :)
I was announced as his best man at their engagement... It would have been very difficult to say no.
If only I hadn't been so nice in the past I would have made myself ineligible for bestness.
The difference from a business point of view (even though this sounds crazy) is that you could have a team assistant that only worked for 1 person.
A team assistant does thinks relating to the job that you are paid to do but we don't want to pay you to do.
A personal assistant would do things like the team assistant but also go to the bank for you, arrange flights for your brother's stag do etc.
*does things
i once turned down a request to be someone's best man, because the wedding was in the states and it was on a grand prix weekend.
"sorry I can't be your best man, I'll be in Belgium?" :D
we often get PAs calling our call centres and yelling when they're told they're not legally authorised to change anything on their bosses accounts because their boss never got around to adding them as a co-signer :D
I know... I should have really... But see... He's my brother... That's the trouble with brothers. As I believe Christine has said before, the trouble with brothers is that they are very annoying.
it's also notable that went out of our way not to impose on people, by not inviting them.
#awesomefriends
You're not going to the GP now?
my brother is too smart to schedule his hypothetical wedding near a race because he knows I won't go.
You are a better sibling than I :D
I haven't worked out what I can do because my brother has placed his wedding on the Thursday of that weekend. There are a number of logistical nightmares that this has caused.
That could be quite a good inspiration for an adventure, i wonder where i could get to which requires the maximum number of minimum flights
(if that makes sense)
:)
(hearts)
Ahh I see (vaguely)
Wow... that's an expensive clash...
I may have tried to talk him into getting married at the Melbourne GP but it turns out the rules of Albert Park state you can't get married in the actual park, you can only get married in one of the function centres there.
Concensus in the office is you can fly to any airport in a maximum of 4 flights from dubai, i want to find 7!
you can bet if he did could, it would've clashed with a heikki signing or something. people need to learn what off seasons are for.
Winter.
hehe!
Going to the Antarctic research centre is a minimum of 2 I seem to remember. You have a flight to mainland and then a second flight to the centre.
summer!
Rally
Actually this is where being an F1 fan Down Under is cool. The season runs during winter and all but 4 races are at night, so if people do stuff it hardly ever clashes...
very true. And I pretty much never miss practice for work because it normally starts at 6pm :D
Gah - I would love to have a nap right now, but I'm at my desk
:(
By the way, England have apparently moved tp one spot in the world football rankings somehow...
*that should say "moved up one"
Are Brazil still top?
Spain are.
I imagine England moved up to due to the even more incompetence of Italy and France...
Nope, third - Spain are top with Holland 2nd
That makes a nice change. Normally the world champions are never top unless it's Brazil...
are you sure you're not looking at the worldcup finishing table?
yep - remarkably, Ireland have gained 5 spots by not qualifying and Egypt - who have not qualified for a World Cup since 1990 - are ninth best in the world
Are you sure you're not looking at the Castrol Rankings?
To be fair, Egypt did win the African Cup of Nations...
I swear guv'na
http://www.fifa.com/worldfootball/ranking/lastranking/gender=m/fullranking.html
:)
this happens in all the good sports, Juan Martin del Potro moved up a ranking spot after Wimbledon and he hasn't played since the Australian Open in January :D
IndyCar:
For anyone interested, the new chassis/technical specification announcement will be streamed live from Indycar.com from 5.30pm (BST)
While this might not mean a whole lot to many, this is potentially the biggest day for the series in years, as it will define what way the series goes for years to come. And stuff...
Sadly I only get in the door at 5.57pm (BST)
They are doing a crossword! And I am still working. Grr.
I'm really looking forward to it, this has the potential to completely change the series and hopefully attract more fans.
Alternatively they could just announce a new Dallara, still an improvement but not a change of vision.
I should be home at 5.25
thats just mean!
Although... I am terrible at crosswords, so probably best they leave me out of it.
It's a stepping stone at least
I'm more of a chess person, but I don't know anyone who plays
I used to play. Don't have much time anymore, used to play a lot over the internet at a site called http://www.redhotpawn.com/
I'm hoping I remember to load up the stream on time.
They've opened another greggs here! Madness
I'm sure it'll save minutes on the hunger for Greggs...
:)
Also a new must follow on twitter for Dr Who fans - http://twitter.com/steven_moffat
Oooh!
I haven't seen this "Dr. Who" thing, but Coupling was awesome!
It also led me to finding the Newsround legend that is Lizo Mzimba on twitter too! But yes, it's 100% him and not some fakey Moffat, yay!
Well, you have 31 seasons and several movies to flick through if you have the time
The Lizo Mzimba?
The very man himself. What a guy.
heh, yeah. I think I'm going to start with the "new" one, Eccleston and Tennant and this new guy.
Someday.
ahh I always look at the doohickey when doctor who is mentioned :)
Whoping :)
As in who-ping... not whopping.
That is so weird.
heh :)
it really is. good timing I guess.
Ted News features something completely new to me:
A nice story I uncovered on the weekend was how close Ross Brawn came a year ago to selling the Brawn Grand Prix team to current Lotus boss Tony Fernandes.
Brawn GP had many suitors at the time. Brawn and Nick Fry held serious talks with Fernandes and his Malaysian backers as early as the Malaysian Grand Prix in April 2009.
Brawn nearly became Lotus! Blimey.
Buemi's turn to face the questions: http://www.formula1.com/news/interviews/2010/7/11028.html
I am not really into cooking. The best thing I can cook is meat with broccoli and potatoes.
Sounds, erm, yum...
I hope he means a roast lunch... and not just that...!
#needsmoremintsauce ;)
:D
He collects Panini stickers, he.is.awesome.
OK, Buemi is awesome.
Q: Do you collect anything?
SB: I was collecting stickers for the Panini World Cup album. I only finished it last week.
I used to do that! Admittedly when I was in primary school but still! Go Buemi.
beat me to it :)
I like:
Q: Do you have any guilty pleasures?
SB: I like to eat a lot of sweets - but I don’t have any problem with it.
No sweet addiction for Mr B. No sirree.
:D
Awesome response.
they still make those? buemi is ace!
Wait a minute. Stickers for this World Cup? Does that mean there's a certain sticker of a certain player in existence?
oh lord...
Definitely. There might even be a shiny!
Loooook: http://www.uksoccershop.com/p-11513/2010-11-Uruguay-World-Cup-Home-(Forlan-10).html
Only £125.
I'm sure they mean £12.50.
I hope they mean £12.50.
...they do mean £12.50, right? Right?
£125?!!! *faints*
Mm. They might be cashing in a bit. The number 7 guy is only £80.

They are calling it a 'Future Car Strategy Announcement'
Wow!
Maybe I'll get Mr C to make me one instead. He's good with fonts and stuff.
Can't you buy a blue t-shirt and a very good black marker pen?
The new Spurs training kit is £50
And thats just the training kit...
that is a lovely typeface though
I could but Mr C's handwriting is not great.
oi!
ahh, that's true
(hearts) ferni: http://en.espnf1.com/ferrari/motorsport/story/23263.html
You cannot invent new things without testing. There is little room for creativity; our technicians have their hands tied.
Aye - saw them. Very nice. The anticipation is something else
:)
it can be argued though that the F-Duct came during this testing ban and thats considered quite creative by McLaren.
I can't believe no one mentioned the best answer anyone has ever given to this question
Q: Who is your dream date?
SB: In the professional world I would like to talk to Roger Federer.
♥
it took two years though. could've come a lot sooner.
Silly Mr C.
As you should know, everything can be done with a computer, they don't need actual physical stuff anymore! Come to think of it, they should just simulate all the races in a computer!
:)
true, but the cost of testing makes it difficult. they can't go back to testing whenever they liked as the costs were enormous.
re: ted's post...
This is done by retarding the ignition. Renault also has the system, as it is governed through the engine's electronic control unit (ECU).
it didn't occur to me that renault would also have had the system. obvious in hindsight, but i'm surprised they don't qualify better.
they did a lot in the simulator, but the duct required track time.
i think they can do. you don't want teams testing solo, but organised tests are good for the fans.
and no doubt the others are investigating how to use it as well.
intrestingly according to the tech report from the FIA some of the teams were running different versions of the ECU system.
didn't know that.
I thought the ECU was standard across all cars?
ferrari want to test at fiorano though, they have no intrest testing with the others.
i guess its only a minor change. but suprised me somewhat
for steven, when he returns. ted answered your question: http://sidepodcast.com/2010/07/11/live-great-britain-2010-the-race/comments/#comment-839749
Ted: Jenson Button started the race with less fuel than Lewis Hamilton.
i know. i can see it happening too. but i prefer team tests.
whoa, did Dennis cut EJ's mike cord at Silverstone?http://twitter.com/MauriceHamilton
http://a.imageshack.us/img51/5892/capturephe.png
Force India, Toro Rosso, Lotus and Virgin all ran the older version.
Yep
http://adamcooperf1.com/2010/07/13/bbc-furious-as-ron-dennis-sabotages-eddie-jordan/
hahaha. Well, I think it's funny, but I can see why the BBC would be ticked :)
Yep - back to the days when RD would play practical jokes in the paddock. He made mince meat of the Eurosport boys in the day
I actually heard a bit of EJ the other day on the Checkered Flag Podcast. He's a.... uhhh... unique individual, isn't he?
just a tad...
Unique is an interesting word to some up EJ.
i bet his mum calls him special.
EJ puts the special into especially annoying.
hehehe.
I am now home and watching IndyCar live streaming. Just go to the www.indycar.com main page and it'll redirect you to the announcement stream without you having to do anything. Memo to FOM/FIA: this is how do you do an announcement online.
i'm there.
So are nearly 5000 others!
Do you think they are still deciding? Counting the votes up?
:)
what are you betting on?
Is it going to be like the Olympic announcement, in a french accent?: "The 2012 car goes to the manufacturer of...."
Tough choice.
I'd really like multiple chassis and engines, but I reckon they'll go with Dallara.
Randy Bernard is such an improvement over Tony George, they finally have someone who can do public speaking
Decent start innit.
@isitmayyet:
We choose not to retire a decade old easy chassis because it is easy. We choose to do so because it is hard.
Feels like it doesn't it?
Looks like I arrived just in time for the announcement.
Going by Randy Bernard's last comment it is not the Delta Wing - phew
IRL voting system #mfc
Sponsored Plug voting?
they're voting by mobile?
SPONSORED mobile.
Sponsored by both the phone manufacturer and the carrier
bernie... are you watching?
oh wait, it's online only.
And yet not too cheesy. Well done IndyCar!
we're all gonna be driving indycars?
the future sounds awesome.
My first thought when he said how they were going to vote
A bit different from doing it behind smoked glass when you have no idea who decided anything or why
Verizon is a sponsor of the Penske team
Dallara wins
Quelle Surprise.
Dallara wins the tub, body kits are open to competition.. most odd
was that an option?
Not that I was aware of.
Looks like they are trying to make the cars look different and perform differently but without the cost of competing chassis
how do you vote for an option that wasn't there? option 13?
That sounds impossible to me.
so i one sucks for overtaking, they try another one?
Everything was an option. It seems as though the options were concepts rather than choices. This is basically Delta Wing's idea with a proper open wheel car.
ahh, okay. understood.
Looking at twitter...this seems a bad choice.
so different teams can run different aero kits?
Ignore Dylan.
Yes.
hehehehehehehe
who's Dylan?
I was actually looking at the sidebar on the live stream.
actually, i read that as dex.
How the heck do they make equivalency here?
It means you have a choice of one chassis rather than having the option of building a B spec chassis to allow you to do some clever aero tweaking. It also prevents the problem that occurred when there were competing chassis. You buy a Reynard and 2 races in it is obvious that Lola have the best car. The only option you have to stay competitive is to go out and buy a whole new car. This way you only have to buy new aero bits.
Good enough ;)
So it's a bit like ricer's here in the states, spend 10 bucks on the chassis and engine, while spending 5k on the looks :)
The guy I write F1 stuff for.
Triple League Racing and a guy who's made up his mind before he's heard the announcement.
Didn't know that.
Effectively the aero will be like F1 where you are allowed to do certain things but not others and it is up to each aero kit supplier to extract performance.
oooh, so the parts can't be exclusive. i like the sound of thise.
He's got a bit of a vendetta against Dallara and Lola despite knowing nothing about them.
But a team can only run 2 aero kits a year so before you make a change you have to be sure you switch to a good one.
ahh, tricky.
Shane's got a good way of describing it (@shagers)
The meat in the burger is Dallara, but there will be a wide choice of what you can have you on that burger, it appears #indycar.
Not sure about this. As soon as one package is clearly better, everyone will switch to it and then the rest will complain it's unfair.
And how can they change kits when they have to run two kits (oval and road) during a season anyway?
that's one way of enticing montoya back.
Could be a lot more tricky depending on what constitutes an aero kit. If all the parts of an aero kit are fixed each car will need one for road courses and a low drag one for superspeedways. So you are effectively committed to your first choices
Ha :)
I think it is interesting that IRL are announcing a standard chassis for 2012 and F1 has yet to announce a new team for 2011
It should be noted this was originally due for 2011 but was pushed back a year or 18 months ago.
They want an Italian manufacture to build their car in America??
Sounds like a QC nightmare to me - too many tacky plastics badly fitted and rusting away?
In a factory that doesn't exist yet.
This looke like they have looked at a set menu and picked random items from each dish and put them all on the one plate.
Oi!
(stole that from Mr. C)
Not to mention metric to imperial This car could be 25.4 times bigger than it is meant to be
indy car buffet.
Think the Alfa Romeo Arna: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alfa_Romeo_Arna
Jeff @MyNameIsIRL makes a good point
I hope I didn't miss something, but have any actual "Aero kit" builders been announced yet? Or is this all still hypothetical?
Stonehenge and Spinal Tap?
Anyone on the planet can build an aero kit. It is totally open
I was thinking more of a couple of probes that were supposed to land on Mars but instead implanted themselves in it due to a miles/kilometres minor booboo
Is it just me or is this stream getting quieter all the time
That sums up the differences between me and you I think;)
It was just the mayor
:D
So the car is cheap, but the teams will spend cubic millions developing an aero kit? Value for money fail!
Perhaps they plan on revealing the bad things when the whole thing goes mute...
They have to meet a price limit.
So how can they do this if F1 decided a budget cap was not possible?
agreed. this to me sounds like a pretty good idea. i'd rather nothing was standardised, but i guess they've got to start somewhere.
I just find it odd that they are allowed to be so biased about everything being in Indiana. Teams in Indiana get cheaper chassis? Why? How is that fair/allowed?
It seems like IRL see themselves as an Indiana state championship
i missed that. what?!
Meanwhile, Danica Patrick is tweeting about the espys:
In LA for the espys. I am presenting best male athlete! Thanks for picking my tissot watch for tonight!
She's so off to NASCAR then ;)
You have to buy your chassis from Dallara at a set price and the aero kit at a max price.
F1 teams build their own cars so it is much harder to work out costs. If F1 had one chassis and people other than the teams building aero kits or at least the teams that did build them having to supply them to all other teams you could do a lot more to control costs
Dallara is giving teams based in Indiana a discout of something like $100k
that is crazy talk.
I really don't get it. Maybe give them a few k discount because of reduced delivery costs but that level of discount is corrupt enough for Bernie
Fair call. I just see this will end up exactly where we are now...
The first 28 chassis.
@DRRIndyCar (Dreyer & Reinbold Racing):
First 28 chassis purchased by Indiana teams receive $150,000 discount from Dallara
but why?
:)
Because in the very old days all the teams were based at Indianapolis, I think...
Partly that I think, they want to rebuild the cottage industry destroyed by 'the split' over the last 16 years. That area is to Indycar as 'Motorsport Valley' in the UK is to F1, most teams are there anyway and just a few are away from it.
But I don't like the discount.
What they didn't say is how often suppliers can introduce a new aero kit. If you make one that doesn't sell can you introduce a second the same season or one per year? Are the suppliers going to look for the kit to last 2-3 years to save costs. In that case by year two everyone will have the best kit and the cars will be clones again.
How are the teams allowd to assess which kit to buy? can they bolt on each one at a pre-season test and back to back them? Do they have to use wind tunnel/CFD info?
Derek Daly? DUCK!!!
building the chassis there should be enough.
Yup. And I didn't like that either tbh.
agreed
Mark Blundell done what he thought about them Indycars: http://twitter.com/markblundellF1/status/18535194808
WHAT?
THe car will be known by the aero kit. So a Dallara can be known as a Lola?
Stream just crashed
Then the feed died. Hmm...
Oooh, Mike Conway is doing the IndyCar on Sky Sports this weekend
Looks like they pulled it..
Makes as much sense as keeping BMW in your team name when your powered by a Ferrari. Bet they won't be happy with that.
Hang on, isn't this standard tub thing something that Max Mosley suggested for F1?
max didn't suggest it. purnell did.
So he gets to do it in IndyCar instead?
i assume that's what he's doing there? f1 wasn't interested but indycar were?
Why do people listen to him? He was responsible for the 25% cut in F1 downforce that ened up being closer to 2.5%
Sounds like it to me. I guess this would suit Indycar better though.
kicked out by jean todt wasn't he?
I didn't know that... or purposely forgot it..
purnell came up with budget cap concept and in that i believe was the suggestion for standard chassis. i think max came up with the "world engine" idea though.
purnell quote about f1 teams:
"The sad thing is that there are solutions but no one is really brave enough or forceful enough or probably convinced enough that they will do anything about it."
i guess indycar are brave enough.
Dear oh dear
RT @IndyCarNatioN: Big apologies for not streaming the Q&A. We're experiencing a camera issue.
We're back
Just re-tweeted that. They have one camera and it failed?
Not at indycar.com
Stop it and restart it
Also follow @nzrconsulting who were involved in this process
Working now
"One kit will include wing flaps for oval, road, street."
just in the door folks
Dallara tub, with aero kit going outward - i kind of like that idea
oooh. ok.
OK. That gives teams the choice of two separate suppliers then.
sounds like our kind of streaming.
I don't ever remember your camera failing after it had been running an hour.
Sounds like Dallara are supplying complete cars minus some bodywork rather than just chassis. They are calling them rolling chassis which normally is everything other than engine and bodywork.
true, do they have more than one lightbulb?
engine still a honda?
For now
I didn't catch any engine announcement other than they said they wanted an engine with 550-700bhp
that's still in the open - new engine specs frpm 2012 too
and the tyres bridgestone, or have they pulled out of that too?
550bhp on the ovals and 700 on the road/stree, but the new car is much lighter too
That won't change
bridgestone are still in
Presumably they are going to have a spec engine?? Who makes engines in Indiana?
Here is some text:
http://www.indycar.com/news/show/55-izod-indycar-series/38526-series-embraces-innovation-for-2012/
They use Firestones which are the same company
:) :)
Pressdog weighs in
http://pressdog.typepad.com/dogblog/2010/07/and-the-answer-is-dallara.html
dallara can supply an aero kit too? how can that be right?
The picture marked winning concept shows what Dallara will be supplying
http://ht.ly/2brkR
Why not? It is totally open
Plus it means some of the Dallaras can be called Dallaras
Most of the Japanese cars sold in the states are made here. Of course that doesn't mean that Honda builds it's race engines here. Wouldn't be surprised if they did, though.
they'll have a tonne more data than everyone else about the build. they'll be able to build all the parts for a fraction of the R&D budget of everyone else.
:)
rce's take: http://www.racecar-engineering.com/news/opinion/491372/a-new-dawn-for-the-indy-500.html
That's what I thought.
I thought they were made at HPD in California
I am not sure that is the case. Everyone will have the CAD info on the chassis and that should be enough. All you really need is its shape and weight distribution.
I would love for a Formula 1 team to think hmm, we can try and win the Indy 500 for not that huge an expenditure...
Another view
http://www.indycar.com/var/photos/175250/FULL.jpg
Interesting article and triggered a thought. There are a lot of F1 teams with very high spec wind tunnels and people to run them that are looking for paying work for them. Maybe the IRL will end up with a grid full of McLarens, Ferraris and Red Bulls
:)
SNAP
In testament to my having a stupid week, we have ridiculous computer problems that means no one can work... except me! Brilliant. {Comment #14}
That takes some doing. I'm not sure whether to congratulate or castigate those responsible for the computer problems!
who has the most spare capacity. williams?
Right up McLaren's alley now they aren't tied to Merc..
I would love for a Formula 1 team to think hmm, we can try and win the Indy 500 for not that huge an expenditure... {Comment #432
It won't happen while Indy 500 clashes with Monaco as it traditionally does (or some other races as is less traditional but entirely possible given that a team would have to start designing before the F1 calender was finalised)...
I would imagine all of them have loads of capacity. I am sure McLaren Ferrari. Red Bull and Mercedes for example would be prepared to take a substantial financial hit just for the publicity of winning in IRL and could probably give aero kits free to some teams. Williams would need to make a profit from it as they don't have expensive cars or foul tasting liquid to sell.
It can. They only have to make an aero kit and sell it on, they don't have to run the team unless they want to.
That is an interesting point but for the USA market Indy is a huge event and it would really wind Bernie up to think that the top teams were doing business in the states without him.
was thinking williams have a whole second tunnel sitting idle. are red bull not in indycar already then?
Lotus are already there with Sato, albeit a different arm of the parent company. You'd think there is the potential for crossover though.
Red Bull sponsored Cheever Racing for quite a while then pulled out, they don't have a presence at the moment because they put their money into NASCAR Toyotas.
It's out of their hands I think - Indy is memorial weekend every year and Monaco is 6 weeks after the ascension (I think)
Also remember Williams used that tunnel to design the Formula 2 car (I think the actual build was contracted out)..
The date is not important. The F1 team doesn't need to physically be in Indy for the race.
Good point - I'm an idiot
I think there are a few teams with tunnels doing nothing
Robin Miller http://auto-racing.speedtv.com/article/indycar-2012-car-reactions/
The date is not important. The F1 team doesn't need to physically be in Indy for the race. {Comment #449}
It does if it wants the full publicity benefit. Otherwise most of the credit ends up with the team even if all it did was run the kit on the day.
The likes of Tony Fernandes or Frank Williams can be there as the face of the company
the branding / naming / publicity comes with the aero kit. no need to be there on the day.
even better. hope they were both watching.
nobody tell bernie.
I think the F1 team would have some representation there but it would be limited to a few people. THe winning car is named after the aero kitso although Dallara build the chassis and for example Ganassi are the winning team if they use a McLaren aero kit the car is called a McLaren and that is how it will appear in all publications/media. If for example McLaren's aero kit wins the race the most important thing is that they have ads ready to roll on all media immediately
quick plug, i like this one: http://www.flickr.com/photos/sidepodcast/4794128320/
the branding / naming / publicity comes with the aero kit. no need to be there on the day. {Comment #455}
Hmm. Sportscars doesn't convince me of that, but maybe Indycars is different...
#confidentialfromBernie
I don't think it is Indycars so much as the Indy 500. It is such a huge event in America that McLaren/Ferrari would get way more publicity in America for providing a $70k aero kit to the winner of that race than for the millions they spend on F1 winning in the USA or winning the world championship
Most normal folks in the states don't know thing 1 about Indycar, but everyone knows the Indy 500. So, yeah, I agree with Steven.
"Tony Purnell came up with the idea of the safety cell and letting everyone get creative with the car’s clothes"
so when all these crazy ideas we put out to fans, there was never any intention of listening or getting feedback, right?
Like the FIA/AMD survey when Max announced his plans for the future of F1 before the results were compiled
Realistically though, no one outside the big teams can afford a multiple chassis situation. I think it's a great way around it
pretty much.
i get that. but if they like the guys idea, run with it. don't pretend to be all caring and sharing and then disregard the feedback.
Pamela is in Paris and I am in rainy cold Melbourne. Boo. {Comment #61}
It was raining so hard here that water was getting in the train and soaking some of the passengers as I was going home on it.
I get the impression the idea was suggested after the request for chassis proposals was made
Are the trains made of paper?
ahh, okay. much better.
Are the trains made of paper? {Comment #470}
No. I think there were gaps between some of the bits of metalwork on it. But usually it doesn't rain enough for that to matter, apart from a nice cooling effect in the vestibules.
Possibly after the Delta Wing was proposed.
There is no excuse for such bad engineering
Hellooooo :)
I feel very organised. I think I may have actually successfully moved house at last. Finally I have documents that suggest I actually live here. I've got my drivers license ready to post and I think that'll be everything :D
Felipe!!! :)
There is no excuse for such bad engineering {Comment #474}
It's normal for the British train system, at least round where I live. It might be why I can get to work and back for less than £10 a day.
How far are you going? Seems like a lot of money to me! I'd cry if I spent £50 a week on travel.
How far are you going? Seems like a lot of money to me! I'd cry if I spent £50 a week on travel. {Comment #478}
40-60 minutes each way (with a choice of 2 different routes - hence the difference in times quoted - and 3 different train operators which are all the same price and can all be accessed with the same ticket). I've never checked the distance.
There is way too much organisation round here.
Have you organised yourself to be in front of a TV for Dragons Den?
It really is awful that the trains are so bad.
Mine are slow and expensive. It's actually only about 4 miles or 2 stops on the train from home to work for me yet it would cost me £4.50 a day to get the train which I think is mental for that distance....
@SBPopOffValve is on the IndyCar media teleconference and is tweeting further details.
I'm more of a chess person, but I don't know anyone who plays {Comment #207}
I play chess. Maybe we should try setting up a game via the internet one day...

Best thing I can cook is an omlette, so I can't really comment...
Interesting
Will be there

intrestingly according to the tech report from the FIA some of the teams were running different versions of the ECU system. {Comment #259}
That's normal, depending on what electronic systems each team has available at any given race. I think there's only been one race where all the teams had the same software since I started checking these things and that was Melbourne 2008!
redhotpawn.com :) {Comment '#490}
Do you play chess there?
they're only supposed to use ecu's produced by mclaren - they're supposed to be spec systems
I thought the ECU was standard across all cars? {Comment #265}
The ECU is standard. The versions used can only be those supplied by MES. The electronics used on the cars are different, so the version that makes most sense differs depending on the team.
I did, a long time ago. But the problem was I would focus on my games and not actually do any work.
My son knows how to play now, so I might start playing again. But I dont' really have the time, unfortunately.

ECUs, yes. But the rest of the electronics are still free choice and the software interfaces between them.

They have to meet a price limit.
So how can they do this if F1 decided a budget cap was not possible? {Comment #355}
Because in a price limit, as opposed to a full budget ap, they can just check how much is being charged. There's nothing to stop the kit builders making a loss if they feel like it...
i found another i like: http://www.flickr.com/photos/sidepodcast/4793717335/
who knew outside could be fun.
it was fun because of there were F1 drivers around :P
now all you need is a post about Felipe so you can use the photos ;)
Oh I look forward to these new idy car aero parts, mostly because F1 teams could probably make a cheap buck off it ad get some free advertising while expanding the never ending McLaren vs Ferrari battle which leads to good racing.
Oh and team Lotus is most likely to do this first
I just want to know if it'll race well - if they produce a field of cars that can't pass eachother, then there's a real problem
The Viva quiz is under way, early days so more welcome
i think, i might have to blog about the day.
Eurgh thunder storm....
Awww, we just have torrential rain.

Hmmm... a thought
I wonder what the chances are that Indycar are already in negotiations with company's regarding the aero kits, but like the chassis decision are being held to a certain date, etc..?
When will he change his mind again?
Probably 10 minutes after I book the time off.
Am trying to outsider andy hone to do an interview or blog or something.... I have gathered he doesn't want to do a q and a thing like Joe does. But a blog he is considering hehe (hearts) :)
Possibly but I wouldn't say it was very long, maybe after the original announcement date of June 30th?
would he talk on the phone like stuart did? you could ask him questions and we could record / edit it.
I did ask.... No idea what I would ask, there is so much I would not be able to start. I think getting him to do a 'weekend in the life of' blog would be a step in the right direction... Failing that I'll have to find him at spa :)
i am impressed!
You could do an interview. You managed to host a sidepodpanel. If you sat down and compiled a dozen questions before the interview you would be fine. If you need help just ask. I am sure everyone whould chip in.
It would be good experience for you too.
I want to be an f1 photographer and andy talks to me lots.. He seems the be the most friendly to tell me more about it... You can't really pick up a book all about f1 photography and what a weekend entails and stuff... Which is what I'm desperate to discover :)
that is true. If he likes the idea of a blog and not talking I did suggest he opens the floor for questions which he can answer in a blog post... No point complaining photographers don't talk about the photography if you won't write about it yourself ;) hehehe
lou... you've changed. sooo much for the better :)
I put that down to you lot ya'know :)
#sidepodcastsfault
How about a slightly different idea. Lou's photography blog interviews a photographer a week/month.
'sidepodcast - we change people for the better' ;) :P
Bingo
I've come to the depressing realisation that I was excited at only having to get up at 7am tomorrow for work. It's still a miserable time to get up!
ooooooooh!!! That is a good idea!! I do need to email Emily davenport back soon....
Have a word with Emma too to see if she can help set up an interview or two
Mr C
I may have a post later, but I'll see
:)
awesome!
I think I know what I'm going to do with my summer now.... :)
ace. is it indycar related?
Glad I am keeping you busy
Nope - I've diarised (well, nearly) my Silverstone ramblings into an incoherent mess.
:)
I haven't had close enough of a look at the Indy car thing to really write yet, but with Toronto on at the weekend, I may tie it in with that.
I will spend the trip to Plymouth tomorrow thinking about how beat to approach this... With no school I was starting to wonder how best I could spend my free time....
awesome! bring it.
what time are you thinking, i may need early sleeps.
By the way, the transcript is on Pressdog now, so I might have a gander at it later
Later - it could go up tomorrow if needs be. I'm just expanding notes and stuff
You have to make it entertaining for the photographers rather than asking them the same questions they get all the time
that is true, no idea how I'm going to do that, given that I'm an interview newbie...
ask a question, do lots of nodding. put head to the side if you want to try lee mckenzies technique.
:)
Lou,
One thing I learned thanks to Gavin when I did blogger interviews for sidepodradio. Do a trial or two. The interviews eventually went well with a tweak or two but the first one was a car crash because of something I hadn't thought of and Gavin spotted.
Am currently daily writing, is there anything anyone wants mentioning? :)
just the character cup from us. and maybe pics of felipe.
Can you get golf in it? http://northernwaffler.wordpress.com/2010/07/14/the-one-they-all-want-to-win/
I'm about to blog the indycar thing but I haven't started yet so it might not be ready
If I can get Doctor Who in, I can get golf in ;)
will do :)
If you're getting golf in, I want Lucky Charms in there too: http://smarterthanyouraverage.com/2010/07/14/magically-delicious/
Ooh I mean to comment on that with a video, hope I can find it now I have sound...
No worries. trying to decide whether to put anything about indycar when I don't really understand any of it :)
hehe will do :)
I am intrigued.
No need to. Or just say they decided on a new chassis for 2012.
done!
good idea :) we are brain storming questions atm this is fun :)
Glad you are enjoying it.
Start with a friendly interviewee. Maybe not a professional but someone you can talk to about the subject. Like Mr C.
#volunteering
wha? erm, okay. i don't know much about photography though. i could talk about lightroom all day if that helps.
I love it
You know about photography and about F1 so at least you are going to be able to understandthe questions.
The other option is we volunteer Stuart
oh yes!
one more of massa: http://www.flickr.com/photos/sidepodcast/4794055727/
only heidfeld to go...
Yes, he can be next
he looks so sad. :(
I had the same thought... I think it's probably easier as a face to face thing... But I may end up mailing mr c for advice, he is good at answering questions
get some advice from jon too, he's done some cracking interviews.
yes!! Brilliant idea!!
Oh I'm buzzing with loads of ideas and everyone wants to go to bed :(
Imagine someone on sidepodcast staying up late
I'm here, but am blogging as it were
we have to get up early tomorrow though, am quickly writing down ideas...
Right, bedtime. I haven't spoken to lukeh today which feels odd, I'm assuming he is still alive and stuff so I must now sleep. Night allxx
Night Lou
night lou
i'm bad at answering email though :)
Mr C sir...
hey ya
if you're still up, i shall have something for you to post in about 15 minutes, but to be honest, i'm not sure how suitable it is
I'll leave it up to you
no worries. be up until 1, and then i sleeps.
grand job
:)
Eurotunnel ticket booked for Spa :)
