It is Jarno Trulli's birthday! Isn't it fantastic that Tuesday birthdays are back? In any case, I am wishing Trulli a very happy birthday, especially since he was the best of the newcomer teams just last weekend. A move up on RG's rankings should go a long way into improving anyone's mood. And talking about rankings...

  • Christine has updated her rankings and it is Karun who gets the sole lead. How will the rest react? And will anyone else dare try tweeting Christine now that she is dealing out punishments for point-fishing?
  • Another weekly update sees two of my favourite sports coincide. I can just picture Fernando wandering around the whole paddock with the (replica) golden trophy in hand.
  • As with every other race weekend, there has been plenty of debate going on here. The latest is on one very low-key Vitaly Petrov, but feel free to also comment on Silverstone's upgrades or the public airing of team radio.
  • Apparently Renault engines are all the craze now. Either that, or Lotus Racing has decided to copy Red Bull yet again.
  • After unsuccessfully trying to pass off Valencia as their 500th race, Lotus Racing boss Tony Fernandes has decided it will make his job easier if he had owned the Lotus name in the first place. Shouldn't he have tried to acquire it a long time ago?
  • Endurance racing driver watch as Anthony Davidson, Alex Wurz and Franck Montagny all feature.
  • In yesterday's daily, RG has mentioned the regrettable end of competitive international football for quite some time. It wasn't the best world cup ever (arguably one of the worst actually), but it featured a spirited and united Africa as hosts, a beautiful German team that will probably come back for more trophies, and the one and only Diego Forlan. As the world moves on to club football, I recommend watching the La Liga for those who want more entertainment. After all, Spain are the world champions and Forlan plays in Athletico Madrid. ;)

Hopefully you'll have a lovely day and do not suffer from football withdrawal the way I do. ;)

    Why not sleep again?

Sort of. Nick and I basically get up at the same time for work though even though he's 3 hours ahead :P

I won't get back to sleep... EVER.

Awww. It's no good feeling tired on your rest day.

Because I get up for work at 6 and he gets up at 9. I've given up trying to call in the morning, he's too grumpy!

Probably thanks to the prevalence of heaters all around.

    Is this for Spa?

  • Amy13/07/2010 at 07:23

But heaters won't help me at my 80s prom!

Do you have American Apparel there? That's where I go for junk like that... It's basically a shop full of neon leggings....

  • Amy13/07/2010 at 07:29

Heheh our work mid winter ball is on friday and that is the theme. I just bought some fluro jewellery but its winter so my legs will be cold! I have also just been invited to a party with the theme "american stereotypes" so i have no idea what to wear to that

    Nope and nope. Really. :)

Remember, I was 4 by the end of the 80s. I wouldn't even remember how they wore back then, never mind appreciate it. :D

I think you should see a solicitor as well.

  • Alison13/07/2010 at 07:58

I also received a seperate letter just saying they received my complaint and it'll be dealt with as soon as possible blah blah blah. Weirdly though they're signed by the same guy but he's given himself a different job title on each letter dated 2 days apart....

  • Alison13/07/2010 at 07:59

I'll write them another letter. We have an ombudsman service that oversees complaints about financial services. I'm not allowed to complain to them until I've exhausted the company's own complaints service though or if there isn't resolution after 8 weeks from first complaining.

Yeah they're quite good. They asses claims on what's deemed to be "fair" rather than simply from a legal perspective. Companies have to agree to letting them regulate them to operate here. It's a good idea. It's supposed to stop individuals being forced to make expensive legal claims.

Does anyone know where the best place would be to sell off my uni books I don't need anymore?

    Amazon marketplace?

  • RubberGoat13/07/2010 at 09:25

Does anyone know where the best place would be to sell off my uni books I don't need anymore? Amazon marketplace?

Most Universities buy them back so they can sell them at the start of the next trimester in a second-hand sale, don't they?

Why not keep them? I have...

  • Alison13/07/2010 at 09:26

    Amazon marketplace?

I sold some of mine on there and it was really easy. Some of my friends made more money on ebay but it's not worth the extra hassle imo. You just make a listing and leave it alone until someone wants it. They email you if it's going to expire and you can relist for free.

  • Lukeh13/07/2010 at 09:27

Why not keep them? I have...

I can almost guarantee you now I will never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever read them again ;)

I use Play's marketplace type thing for games and that's hassle free and super easy to use so it sounds like Amazon is just as easy which is good

You can list by just typing in the ISBN and it links it to all the book information. You just need to describe the condition and set the price basically.

  • paul13/07/2010 at 09:30

  • Lukeh13/07/2010 at 09:32

Yeah. I don't throw out my books until I really have to. It reminds me of where I have been and what I achieved.

I have very much grown myself into the mindset of, if I'm never going to use it/play it/watch it then I'll sell it. Silly perhaps but I hate owning stuff I know I wont use.

Not silly at all. They were useful once and you used them but you don't need them now and can use the money/space for something else you're going to use.

You probably will get slightly less for them but you type in the ISBN and all the information, photos and reviews and everything are all there without you spending hours writing descriptions.

Office radio (don’t know what channel) has just put on “Saturday Night” by Whigfield – I wonder if they realise it’s Tuesday afternoon……

That song is so bad it should even be banned on a saturday night let alone tuesday afternoon!

Although I would like to hear a Tuesday Afternoon cover. It would be fantastically generic.

If you think that song by a Danish pop singer is bad, you haven't even scratched the surface!

I used to have a sampler CD, contained some classical and other types of music which I used to compare stereos with.

They keep the prior weeks episodes on the Air NZ entertainment screens, when I went home at Christmas I watched them because it was the end of the year cliffhanger, I was secretly hoping the people sitting next to me were not New Zealanders and thus had no idea what I was watching because it was very, very shameful :D

I normally read or watch something on my laptop because I like to keep the screen on the little airplane tracker thingy that tells you how high you are and how far you've gone

It's the in flight version of Live Timing innit? :D

  • Amy13/07/2010 at 12:57

totally, gotta love the stats :D

  • Christine13/07/2010 at 12:57

I used to like Hollyoaks when I was nearer the target age group... they seem like kids now :)

Me too. I watched it from the very beginning for years and years and years until it all went a bit bonkers.

That and emmerdale are the only soaps that reeeeeeeeeeeally bother me. *shakes fist at the both of them*

I stopped watching when I left home. When I went home my sister would give me a round-up of the storyline and the descriptions just got madder and madder.

  • Joe in Fla13/07/2010 at 12:58

I usually get stuck on the commuter jets to Canada, barely enough room to sit up. A good sudoku is what keeps me entertained

    Hello all

    Hey buddy

  • Amy13/07/2010 at 12:58

My planes have had that on the big screen everyone can see.

I've never been on a plane with a big screen because I've only ever gone on short haul planes with the 3-3 seating configuration. But that will change in 40 days and 1 hour! :D

  • Alison13/07/2010 at 13:01

Well I'm hardly a frequent flier... I've only done a couple of short budget flights then with Emirates to Dubai.

Worryingly, next time I fly, I will have enough miles for a silver member card.... I think that's a bit crazy. I hate flying, I'm not sure how that happened.

  • RubberGoat13/07/2010 at 13:02

Ooh now I remember a show I used to love that was a bit soap-like - Bad Girls, the one with the prison. For many series' that show was awesome.

Cool. You should be allright anyway - it's just longer.

that I might not enjoy, I get bored on a 4 hour flight. But I think I shall be OK since my seat will have a power point. Think of all the transcribing I could do in 24 hours.

  • Alison13/07/2010 at 13:05

Oooh I want to go to Australia but I was disappointed that involved having to take off and land 3 times. It kills my ears every time.I may actually end up deaf.

  • Joe in Fla13/07/2010 at 13:06

Did you ever notice that when you are flying to an F1 race, it's exciting...everything is possible, the people are friendly....it's a bright new day. Then on the way home, you feel like cattle

I didn't have that when I flew to Singapore, on the way home I was surrounded by other race fans and we discussed the race most of the way home :D

fair enough. I flew out the following afternoon, thats how I managed to see Jenson at the airport :D

I hope on my flight* from Melbourne to Malaysia I see lots of people, it's my only reason for going to Malaysia early.

    *(If my dates are right)

You might be right there. Silly Justin.

I was reading this post: http://www.guardian.co.uk/tv-and-radio/tvandradioblog/2010/jul/08/coronation-street-birthday-disaster and loved the bit about Hollyoaks:

Strangely, there is no word yet of a huge disaster from the mighty Hollyoaks. The show, which exists in its own demented parallel universe with only scant resemblance to our own, is always dreaming up new and interesting ways of killing its characters, and has announced the exits of 16 cast members this year. And of the ones already gone, not one of them has fallen victim to a lesbian-love-triangle-parachute-sabotage, or similar. Frankly, the series needs to man up.

I usually stay at a GP weekend for 6 days or so, so I ready to get home. On my flight from Toronto to Indy for the final US GP oddly enough Takumo Sato was on my flight after finishing 6th in Montreal. He was a happy guy

  • Joe in Fla13/07/2010 at 13:13

I've been put off speaking to strangers while travelling since weird National Express stalker man.... I did speak to a nice lady by the baggage carousel in Birmingham though. Maybe I should be braver.

I am secretly hopeful my flight from Heathrow to Singapore will see me seated next to someone F1y :D

  • Alison13/07/2010 at 13:20

People are always drawn together by collective moaning... I had to wait nearly 90 minutes for my bag. I nearly missed my train it took that long. To add to it, some badly behaved kids kept kicking the emergency stop button.... I've decided I like getting off in Dubai because so many people are just changing there, it's really quiet when you get off.

*fingers crossed* I've never had a bag lost or delayed and have been very lucky with seat assignments. Though once I wanted to get into the exit row and there was three elderly women sitting there, I doubt they could handle the exit window if it were needed

  • Alison13/07/2010 at 13:28

    Not always.

I guess not. We bonded over collective horror at seeing all these leaky vats of holy water coming round an hour into waiting. Goodness knows what they'd been leaking over the whole time. Also the children. Who could let their children stop the thing 3 times without dealing with it??

I heart online buying sometimes. Bought a new hard drive for my Xbox 360 at a super cheap price about 10 minutes ago, in that time they've paid, shipped and provided tracking details for the (free) recorded delivery if necessary.

Hello all, am watching my Live Aid DVD, can't believe it's 25 years ago. We were on holiday camping so only got to hear it on the radio. When we got home a friend brought round their video player as they had recorded some of the concert. It was the first time I'd seen video.

How old do I feel now!

Ideally, what would you like to do?

I dunno to be honest. Just something that would be useful, I wouldn't mind doing something computing related seeing as I've learnt what I've learnt for 3 years but I wouldn't mind something more general. Ultimately I want to do teaching but I'm happy to wait a few years to get more experience or placements first.

Hi Alia, how's the new job going?

  • Alianora La Canta13/07/2010 at 18:35

    Can't say I've ever re-read mine either...

    Is it worth keeping them then? {Comment #70}

I've re-read several of my old university books, but then I was careful which books I bought in the first place. Some of them have since proven highly relevant in understanding certain phenomenae.

Hi. Where the hell have you been? :)

Have you booked, really need to do that this week.

I haven't and I know, it needs doing. I've been wanting to ask what you think.

  • Bassano13/07/2010 at 18:44

Hi. Where the hell have you been? :)

    Avoiding the World Cup :)

I haven't and I know, it needs doing. I've been wanting to ask what you think.

    I think early afternoon

  • Pat W13/07/2010 at 18:47

What do ya reckon, about 1pm?

I was thinking 11 or 12. I've booked the hotel in Wimbledon and will be ready to leave there by 8 I hope (aiming between 7.30 and 8.30 in my head, realistically could be later), then I reckon on meeting up with you guys and going in convoy to Ashford to get Lou? I imagine it would be under an hour from the edge of London but I don't know how long it would take to get out of the city in that direction at rush hour.

Then hang around the terminal to get any last minute items (i.e. coffee either to have there or take on the train).

  • Pat W13/07/2010 at 18:47

That is to say if we skip brekkie and get it later. Or meet and get it. Figure out on the Tuesday night I suppose.

I'm just thinking if we get the standard ticket we can get there up to 2 hours late

  • Bassano13/07/2010 at 18:49

And then Wimbledon, and then something else

  • Alianora La Canta13/07/2010 at 18:49

    Hi Alia, how's the new job going? {Comment #323}

Fantastically. I'm typing in lots of useful forms into a not-entirely reliable database (therefore getting quite a bit of variety into my day). I'm steaming through them faster than my boss expected (but I'd like to get them in quicker and surprise everyone by getting all the forms in for the deadline). The department is great - there's good banter, friendliness and plenty of nice biscuits. There's also flexi-time, so I can start between 7:30am and 9:30am. The only problem is that my colleagues sometimes have to remind me to go home and it's already become a standing joke...

Sounds good. Aim for 12 and then we have some leeway

Heheh :) Must say I found that in my Spain holiday, I was still addicted to the comments until I got there, then the clean break was really helpful.

Wimbles to here will be bad, gettingoutside the South circular [mini M25 A road around inner London] next then onto Ashford should be the easy bif as it's against the traffic

Thus meaning we can book midday and get there at 1.45 with no penalty, I wouldn't leave it later than that. 1pm is just as good, I was just thinking we don't necessarily want to get there, do coffee etc and still have to wait. But as I say i'm not sure how long it takes.

Leaving London [Bassanoville] at 9:30/10 would miss most of the traffic

Wimbles to here will be bad, gettingoutside the South circular [mini M25 A road around inner London] next then onto Ashford should be the easy bif as it's against the traffic

Okay no worries then. I've been on the North circular with the traffic and don't care to repeat that experience..

I've not checked the times lately but we could go for the 12.30 one if there is one. If we get there early we can get stuff in the shop, if we're there on time we've still time to do that.

That's the one... It was definitely more fun when I was 10. I used to play it on an ancient Mackintosh back before they decided it was cool to call it a Mac.

  • Pat W13/07/2010 at 20:31

Now I'm humming that stupid Monkey Island song.... GRRRR

I liked Monkey Island's theme at the time, sounds quite dated now...

    Deeetox

Shame it isn't the proper video intro, just the audio with silly stills.

I enjoyed Step Up... ...1, I suppose I should call it. I think they only got as far as 2 though - the films after that were named other things if I remember rightly.

Maybe I'll give 21 grams another chance. I watched it the first time when I was 17 with my first ever boyfriend who had just broken up with me and couldn't get home for several hours so perhaps that contributed to why I didn't enjoy it so much....

Now there's some personal life trivia you never needed to know.

no idea. they're all pre-season shots though.

well expect for HRT drivers, as the team doesn't appear to have taken any.

Not sure I like the text... would surnames be better? Just in case we get a Buemi v Vettel situation.

it seemed more human / friendly that way. you should be able to tell the seb's apart by what they look like. can change it, if you'd prefer though?

I see what you mean. I don't mind it that much, as you've probably managed to keep the two Sebs away from each other.

What are you going to do for the final?

Yes definitely. Although I like old hair better. On both.

  • James13/07/2010 at 23:19

you're assuming they both get that far ;)

  • me13/07/2010 at 23:19

w00t! i delayed the cup by a week faffing around with polls, and then we spent at least two days fiddling with the design. it will start soon. it will.

    The new one I mean.

  • RG13/07/2010 at 23:20

    Evening everyone,
I assume everyone has seen that the Beeb are angry with Ron Dennis?

i love this story! cooper is taking it way to seriously though.

just rewatched it. Eddie seemed quite annoyed at what happened. I like that Ron doesn't get a pass through McLaren but from Bernie.

that does seem strange. i guess he'll argue that if it's good enough for flav.

true, but Renault and Flav have cut all ties (i can't imagine they want him anywhere near them) although I don't think the drivers he managed have. Ron is the chaiman of McLaren so you'd think he'd get one from them.

I didn'tknowanythingabout this. Go Ron. We have spent the whole season asking for someone to shut EJ up and Ron is the man who did it. Shame Christine doesn't do ex-team principal's rankings.

How have I not heard of Ron's reputation as a practical joker. Berger was legandary and Senna eventually decided the best option was not to sulk but to retaliate. Senna got himself a carbon fibre briefcase and Berger decided it was pretentious and a ridiculous amount of money. Senna told him it was indestructible so Berger through it out of a helicopter. It had Senna's wallet, passport etc in it.

on the plus side, presumably no-one could ever get the money out of it :)

I think it survived because they were not that high but Senna still hadn't developed his sense of humour and didn't take it well.

Berger had another favourite trick. When he started in F1 he was also doing the Euro Touring car championship also for BMW. I am sure it was in touring cars that he got hold of the keys to another driver's car. He opened the sunroof a few inches and put a fire hose in and filled it. I am sure that was a nice surprise at the end of a day's racing.
