Good day everyone to another Sidepodcasting day. It's been a bumper weekend of motorsport, some of which I'll mention here and others I won't - I don't have that much time on my hands. I'll even include non-motorsport news - anything to fill up a Daily page.
First of all, in the British Touring Car Championships, the three race-winners in Knockhill, Scotland two weekends ago were Tom Chilton [England], Gordon Shedden [Scotland] and Tom Boardman [England, his first victory in the BTCC]. In other words, England won 2-1 that particular weekend [or, if you're reading this in Scotland, England drew 2-1. And if you're reading this from anywhere else in the world, the UK won 3-0 because the only non-British driver in the series is Aron Smith from Ireland]. It also means that Gordon Shedden leads the overall standing by just a single point from Matt Neal with three rounds and nine races left to go.
The IRL championship is also shaping up for a thrilling finish after the inaugural Baltimore Grand Prix in Maryland, where Australia's Will Power achieved back-to-back victories in a race that offered an unusually low safety car rate, similar to the last event at California. It means that Dario Franchitti leads by only five points in the overall standings with one race in Japan and two races in America still to go. It seems that every other motorsport is enjoying a closely-run championship except ours. No fair!
Also two weekends ago, the 38th annual Winmau World Masters, presented by the British Darts Organisation, was played over three days at the Hull Arena, UK. The BDO is the organisation that used to show darts on the BBC, since the World Masters and the 2012 World Championships at the Lakeside will, from now on, be shown on ESPN. This should not be confused with the PDC [Professional Darts Corporation], the organisation that shows darts on Sky Sports and ITV4. The men's final was won by Scott Waites of England and the women's final was won by Lisa Ashton, also of England.
And now for the Memorable Moments bit of the Daily...
- The 1971 Italian GP was memorable for giving us one of the closest finishes in F1 history. A gaggle of cars slipstreamed and out-slipstreamed each other almost every lap until 5 cars crossed the finish line with just 6 tenths of a second separating them. The race was eventually won by England's Peter Gethin, who had also set the fastest average speed, a record that stood for over 30 years.
- 1988 was an emotional race for Ferrari. Ayrton Senna was all set for the win until he got spun out by a back-marker just a couple of laps from the end. This meant that both Ferraris of Gerhard Berger and Michele Alboreto finished the race 1-2, just weeks after it's founder, Enzo Ferrari, died at the age of 90. Also, Senna's retirement prevented McLaren from winning every single race that season. Can anyone prevent Red Bull from getting pole in every single race this season?
- One of the golden rules of motorsport is not to take out your teammate. Minardi drivers Pierluigi Martini and Christian Fittipaldi attempted this in the most spectacular way possible in the closing stages of the 1993 race. Whilst looking at the footage, does anyone else think that the cameraman was almost expecting the accident to happen?
- 1996 was a crucial race for the championship contenders. The opening laps were eventful, with Jean Alesi in a Benetton leading into the first chicane from 6th place, cars overtaking, retiring and hitting the tyres on the chicane apexes. Unfortunately for Damon Hill, he was one of those drivers in an incident that could have lost him the World Championship that year.
And then there's 1999 when Mika Hakkinen teared up after binning his McLaren in front of the Italian Tifosi [here he is talking about it with Top Gear's James May], when the fans swarmed Giancarlo Fisichella's abandoned Benetton and proceeded to strip it bare. And 2008, one of the very few wet races in Monza, where Sebastien Vettel won his first Grand Prix in a Torro Rosso, and thus the domination began.
Obviously there are far more moments than I can mention, and to look on YouTube for, since they've had racing in Monza since the 1920s. It's also a bit tricky to pick clips that don't have moronic comments from brain-dead, potty-mouthed [insert derogatory noun here] plastered all over them. Still, I'm sure that's a subject for another Daily. In the meantime, see you again in two weeks.

Good evening folks
hullo jim and jullo new day. how's things?
No complaints. Reviewing data from my kart at the National Championships and having a Guinness.
good to hear! what does the data say?
appreciate the daily colin, great memorable moments :)
Data says that I did "ok" for my first year in a shifter kart. My teammate trophied and he drove my exact same kart, while I was 20th out of 34 in my class and 307th out of 1107 in the nation.
If you're curious as to see what a course on the National Championships is like: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=37Bz6WU87DA
Very big courses, lots to memorize, only three tries per course.
woah, love the live data.
Yea, it's a good learning tool. I have my teammates telemetry also, so I can see where I was losing time. Learning a lot from it. Need to work out a system next year where I can review the telemetry between runs like they do when they pull into the pits in professional racing.
Next year I'll have pedal sensors installed so I can see how much on throttle/brake I and my teammate am. That will help greatly.
I'm aiming to trophy next year, but it's a long road. Need to finish up this year strong (two more national tour stops left) and then break down the kart and send it off to have the motor rebuilt and have my ignition reprogrammed to take advantage of my driving style.
had no idea karting could eb so advanced.
*be
Some of it is not. This is the upper tier of amateur karting in autocross (cone based courses). It's a class called "Formula 125" and we're allowed 125cc motors with 6 speed gearboxes, handling capable of over 2g, and all the data logging we could ask for (just need to buy it =P).
you gotta keep us posted :)
Will do next season. This season would have been a very boring bunch of reports. "Kart broke," "I under drove it," "kart broke again," etc. For a while there I swore that my kart was a 2002 McLaren with all my retirements.
ahhh, built by newey :)
Yes, back when Newey built cars you rolled the dice on. Seems he's figured it all out now, hardly any issues with this years chassis aside from a few KERS problems. Nothing terminal though.
not sure what happened there. red bull somehow tamed him.
Perhaps he's sliding into his Rory Byrne stage of life where he can make amazing vehicles that are also tough. Something has definitely clicked though, thats for sure. If last years car was half as solid as this years car, the results would be about the same in terms of how far ahead Seb is from the pack.
maybe it's so fast, they don't have to push anything to the limit?
That could very well be too. Never thought of it that way. I have a feeling the car would have been that dominant in 2009 had the double diffuser ruling been different.
in that case, thank the lord for brawn :)
i must sleep sir. until next time...
Ciao
I am very happy with Davis Cup draw, I get to see Roger play Lleyton on Friday which is just like epic tennis of early this decade, then Roger and Stan playing doubles on Saturday! Now I won't be tragically upset if I miss my chance to see them at the Olympics :D :D :D
Good article on the new Lotus arrangement for 2012.
http://www.edp24.co.uk/sport/formula-one/michael_bailey_the_lotus_dream_that_became_a_nightmare_1_1022661
absolutely. in the words of JYS, you should win at the slowest possible speed. if you can run at 95% capacity instead of 100% and still win, that saves the car from a significant amount of stress.
Amen to that. :D
well, it is tough but things do change. if the world around is changing you have to adjust if you want to survive and prosper. sad for Norfolk but at least the team will be moving someplace else in England. could be worse, look at Levi's jeans, when was the last time they produced any in the U.S. of A ...
I will stay liking them for as long as they have Heikki but theres not really a long term attachment forming with me when they change every single year :)
No doubt Korea will help their cause in wooing your support. :D
But yeah, I think I'm much more settled with this because Tony got something in return for the name - rather than being forced to let it go for free in the courts. And it's a good one too - a significant (controlling?) stake in Malaysian Airlines. And in the end, I really think they're making the right moves to be competitive. I'm hoping they start beating (Group) Lotus soon.
evening folks
Of course, that should be "good morning"
nah, it was right the first time.
Well, I suppose it must evening somewhere all of the time.
Well... 6.2 earthquake 80 miles east of Motegi = IndyCar drivers moaning. Oh well....
The Fonz OBE

:)
How well do you know your Formula 1 history?
The book That'll be the Day: 365 F1 Stories takes a look at significant moments or quirky happenings on this day in Grand Prix history. Can you guess what event the following describes?
I hope they complain as much next time there's one in California
Unlikely. Danica's complaining the past week has boarded on irritating.
Actually what's really annoyed me are drivers (and let's face it, riders) spouting information and proof about the effects of the earthquake (etc) from folks with no idea what they are talking about
About what?
A few have been complaining about going to Japan, because they've listening to MotoGP riders. This is, apparently, further reason as to why they shouldn't be in Japan.
Haha, i could understand about radation if there was any there, but earthquakes? Thats insane
If I had a choice between listening to an expert on a subject, or listening to the ramblings of an IndyCar driver / MotoGP rider, I would probably choose the former.
:)
I just dont understand what it is they are worried about, they could take geiger counters with them if they needed to, they can fly in all there own food, drinks e.t.c.
Exactly, and US cities rarely tend to be pollutant free for the most part.
They should be worried about vegas, there was a lot of nuke testing done around there, its easily the most nuked place on earth
They sound like they are going to be parachuted in to stand next to the reactor.
One of them reportedly is going to bring his/her own food and water. Which prompted a prominent journalist to remark something like, "yeah because the hard-hit Japanese people really appreciate a bunch of rich Americans complaining and bringing their own food".
That may or may not have been a prominent female competitor.
Yep. I've also seen a quote from Kanaan calling her ignornat.
http://www.usatoday.com/sports/motor/indycar/story/2011-09-14/drivers-divided-over-safety-issues-in-japan/50403366/1
Or even 'ignorant'. :)
I dunno. I quite like "ignornat"
:)
dunno or Duno ? :-)
I wouldn't mind a doughnut right about now
apparently there are the annual Indonesian forest fires with smoke covering the skies in Malaysia and Singapore... yet, I am still ready to go :-)
http://uk.reuters.com/article/2011/09/14/indonesia-fires-idUKL3E7KE1OJ20110914
I experienced this once, few years back at the F1 at Sepang, beautiful blue skies and within seconds everything turned smoky yellow and visibility was less than the length of the start finish straight ... unbelievable
One of F1s biggest sponsors is in a bit of trouble http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-14927432
$2 billion !! Ouchie-wowa
I think for them is something like me loosing wallet with few hundred in ...
I wonder if the 'run-that-track' sponsorship might not be that long lived after this season
Adam cooper copies my post 2 mins later *waves* :P
Wow, nearly forgot.
Ten years ago today Alex Zanardi suffered his Lausitzring accident...
pity will not see him racing in Macau this year ...
I was surprised they ran the race at all, so close to 9/11. I suppose the people were largely stuck though.
Do we know if he qualified for the Italian Paralympic team? I tried looking it up the other week and got nowhere.
The Paralympic cycling races start and finish at Brands Hatch and might even use some of the track.
No idea tbh
they ran F1 at Indy too ...
that I remember as it was the F1 debut for Tomas the pothead Enge
has anyone noticed this:
Hispania technical director Geoff Willis has left the team having failed to get assurances about their financial commitment to the design and build of their 2012 car. (Autosport magazine)
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/motorsport/formula_one/9591784.stm
Interesting.... Willis to Williams, eventually?
But won't he and Coughlan be doing the same job?
Depends how long Coughlan is around I suppose

http://blog.unlap.co.uk/michael-schumacher
BTCC at Rockingham is expected to have the biggest field in nearly 20 years. Looks like 27 cars are lining up for the event.
Remembering the legend that is Alex Zanardi
"The Pass" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cBthxGThBkc
Bernie is famous for his tricks to spice up F1?
How about buying an America Cups team and hiring Neway to do the aero?
One thing I learned from Nick's video post yesterday is that Red Bull have a yacht team. Newey could always go there if he ever becomes keen. :D
Unfortunately thats a spec series :)
No reason they couldn't enter the americas cup though!
Oh, btw the races yesterday and today aren't streamed as they are offshore, the stadium racing starts tomorrow so should be streamed :)
Its quite interesting because you have both aerodymanics and fluidynamics, i dont know if you can abbreviate fluidynamics to flui though :)
Air is a fluid hence the use of CFD. You mean hydrodynamics and aerodymanics
#pedant
Indeed - the exposure from winning the America's Cup would be pretty darn good. Not to mention a great way of thanking Newey while keeping him on the payroll.
Question for Mr C if he is here, or anyone else who may know. If I want to have a website using a database, is PHP/MySQL still the best free/cheap option?
I used it several years ago and have an itching to do something new with it, even though it'll probably take the whole off-season. :)
yup. lowest cost hosting is almost always built on those two.
if you're feeling inspired though, i can recommend Mongo: http://www.mongodb.org/
i think autosport are using it for their next project. the 'try it out' tutorial is much fun to play with.
costs a bit more to host, sadly.
I swear , if iTunes were a person, I probably would have punched him by now.
Cheers. I just need something fairly straightforward and may have an investigate of that next week. I've got a couple of days off work and some ideas. :)
Yeah the Windows version is awful, I use it to buy things and get the hell out of it quickly before it crashes something. Apparently the Mac one is okay.
Really? Been using it for more than 2 years now - don't have any complaints.
Takes ages to load, ages to navigate the store, you press play on some music and it sounds like a scratched CD with all the skipping/jumping. Awful.
Mr C... Have you seen that Windows 8 isn't going to support flash in Metro!
You'll have to go into desktop mode and then launch a browser and then use flash...
Flash = Dead
Hmmm. It does take a bit long to load sometimes, but once you're in, it's fine. The store navigates as quickly as your Internet connection does, and the music plays OK too.
A bit surprised there, honestly. They're now ensuring Android has an exclusive grip on Flash - which is still attractive to a lot of people. For this to work, they'll need special apps for YouTube - and given that they're owned by Google, that might be a wee bit tricky.
Pat, do you mind if I phone you?
Not at all carry on
i might've: https://twitter.com/#!/betterthan/status/114312113018781697
flash isn't dead. but swf's are dead. flash is still the best animation package available for creating moving vectors. it just needs HTML5 output.
Ta :-)
have you seen or used flash on android?
it's a truly dreadful and painful experience. apple know it and microsoft know it. i would be amazed if google don't know it too. google supports html5 video already.
but i'd be darned if they didn't try to support it anyway - it's still mentioned as a key feature in lot of marketing for different Android phones.
Anyway, off to bed.
Night, folks!
Enjoy a little something from the Sidepodcast back catalogue.

Afternoon guys.
What is Klout?
oooh, hello. klout lists the @f1scoop's real name.
#oops
http://klout.com/
Evening chaps *tips hat*
I'm now devastated Klout doesn't fancy rolling out the features for me.
The tw account I manage inspires 7.000 people.
Feel like walking in the sunshine
couple of days, max.
heheh
Must say, the Metallica headling F1 Rocks in India news is quite surprising.
I mean... Metallica. Slayer to headline the Valencia F1 Rocksin 2012.
they've sold out and gone all corporate. they opened a microsoft event the other week.
Hah
I can't wait that long. *jumps around impatiently.
and his linkedn profile ties him to toyota. busted.
Well, as long as they get their money, and then ultimately complain about said money
Nice band. I've never been a fan of them (DT for ever!), but they sound very well!!
52. Is that good?
ooh I haven't listened to dream theater for years, assuming you mean them.
The fact I know about dream theater totally isn't related to the fact they're total muse fanboys. nope.
Not sure about it anymore, I appear to be very influential about a basketball team in san antonio...
about the same as mine. i need to annoy some schumacher fans to bump it up a bit.
Criticize Maldonado, criticize him.
Defend Hamilton's moves and your name will be popular in Venezuela :P
heheheh!
Yep, I was talking about them.
They released their new album two days ago. Here's the video of the single.
http://new.music.yahoo.com/videos/--221576286
It says I can add more points by linking my Facebook account, but I can't link my second Twitter account, surely that would help too.
I had no idea. Also, it seems mike portnoy left, or they got rid of him. boooo :(
The highest score among people I follow is Jenson Button's 78.
He left last year, Mangini is in the drums now.
He's doing really well, really pleased with his work. He has surprised many DT fans too
Mine's 39. so that should make you feel better ;)
Again, it's totally unrelated he called absolution the best album of the decade and that I like him. Such a coincedence!
Apparently mine is 49. I can deal with that. says my three top topics are formula one, music and, of course... monaco.
Heheh :)
My personal account has a 28 and is influential about cider, Singapore and puppies
They do, they just want a different kind of html5 video
true enough. i'll take anything that's not in a flash container ;)
you can give +5k to people who influence you daily. just sent you one here:
http://klout.com/#/toomuchracing/topics
am out for today, will throw some to other people tomorrow.
+5K rather. not five thousand :)
Ahh I see, ta
also, you can add people who influence you at the base of this page (or your own):
http://klout.com/#/sidepodcast/influencers
not sure what that does though.
Wow - Danica can slam the door shut behind if she wants
http://m.apnews.com/ap/db_16016/contentdetail.htm?contentguid=srUsOVgl
"Oddly enough, I would say that the older I get, the more aggressive I get. Is that weird?" she said in Richmond, where she qualified 32nd and finished 18th last Friday night. "I didn't start like a Brazilian driver and go out 'Whoooo' and hit everything and figure it out later. I started out much more patient with other drivers and patient with myself and respectful.
"Now I'm much more of the attitude - and it's probably because I have fenders these days - but much more of the attitude that 'Don't mess with me. I will hit you back,'" she said.
Hmmmm....
My Klout score is 36. My one area of influence is Ewan Marshall who tweets Follow Friday for me every week

An article about Alex Zanardi's current doing's

:)
Almost never use it apart from the occasional rant and never use facebook other than to acquire poker chips
"...The ultimate goal is gold at the London Paralympics next summer. He's a virtual certainty to be selected to the Italian team, and Sanchez and Barbeau agree he's a medal contender..."
Sweet
:)
Ta, just saw your tweet a minute ago. Great to hear he's still going to attempt it. Who's up for a visit to support him in the Paralympics next year?
Sorry was Matt's tweet I think
Absolutely wonderful. What a hero and an inspiration.
Shame he couldn't fit in the final Indycar race of the season. I will definitely watch his paralympics races
It was a mutual decision between Zanardi and Ganassi I believe. Shame really.

Virgin Galactic's first flight will be in a year's time. I like that Branson's long term plan includes using parabolic flights to actually go somewhere

Oh and here's a brief piece on a car powered by coffee
http://coffeecar.org/the-car/
Tickets are available now and the window closes on the 26th. I'm assuming 'H' means 'Handcycle', so that's Friday 7 Sept 2012 at Brands Hatch. There are two sessions, morning and afternoon. They are £10 per session. £20 is the same or less than most motorsport events in this country.

what a beautiful morning
Nice. Can I have one too?
It's pitch black
True story.
yes. And trying to rain. And very windy. And my tram left without me. And I'm dressed for Sydneys sun *shiver*
Are you going to Sydney today?
yep, flight leaves at 7.30 :)
Have fun.
And don't forget to post your flight number for radar fans
qf412. Blink and you'll miss it.
Sydney is cold! I came back with a sniffle!!
it's going to be 27, I'll cope. Just.
I miss 27. It has been getting colder this week.
Sniff sniff sniff.
ooh, daily done nice and early. woohoo!
#confidentialfrommrc
Can you spare a few degrees? Maybe 15?
Shocking
I have no excuses *hands head in shame*
not at all. Sorry :D
Wow.
I've been trying to write a post since Tuesday.
BOOOO
BOOOOOOOOO
well I'd hate to catch Alisons sniffles. I hope they give me coffee on the plane. I feel foggy.
I can't choose a winner, they're such fine ghost impressions!

I think you're far enough away perhaps. I was confused because I thought it'd be warm so we went on a ferry to a little seaside town and the sun went behind a cloud and I got really cold. I had to buy a wrap and everything. Australia was overall way colder than I thought it'd be!
you were here at a pretty bad time weather wise.
i am on board. this plane is almost empty. possibly because there is about 8 melbourne to sydney flights within the 7-8am hour
All Nick would tell anyone about it was how much it rained. It may actually have rained everyday we were there. No rain in Sydney but that was a bit nippy with the wind off the sea.
Just had a thing about Google apps. One interesting app is offline Google mail. I may give that a try

That usually suggests it will be a good post
"Schum, Schum, Schum Schum, Schuuuuuuuuuum!"
Fantastic
Lol, they've moderated an awful lot of comments on that page.....
Because every post has become an Anti-Sky Rant ;)
bbc must be chuffed to bits they ever bothered to save itv's arse.
I think it's quite funny. It's a bit infantile to delete them like that though if that's what people want to talk about.
off topic though. they need a daily thread :)
Still though, there are gems like that brilliant Schumi comment :)
Someone show it to Journeyer later please!
If you moderate so harshly, I think the conversation all turns to why there's so many moderated posts. Might as well turn off the comments if you just delete what people say.
That is funny :D
now you're talking.
;)
:)
Where's this amazing finished daily I've been hearing so much about?
I am watching the after-result of something not worth discussing here, but it's making me chuckle because all the protagonists are in a room waiting to speak and it's like the bit after an F1 race where they have a chat before they go out onto the podium :)
joking aside, apart from sidepodcast, there isn't a site of the internet that i read comments on anymore. i have no idea what comments are like on bbc posts, because i read as far as the bit when jake stopped writing and then close the tab.
Where you would expect
http://sidepodcast.com/post/daily-16th-september-2011
I've seen that! :P I kept it quiet, though. :D
