Here is an awesome in car camera (FROM 1994) of Mark Blundell at Spa.

every f1 car needs a gopro. it should be in the regulations already. cheers for the daily chappie.

that Mark Blundell clip reminds me of a short clip from Robert Kubica's BMW days with a helmet cam, would love them to use this in the official footage, plus then they could get rid of that horrible camera post on top of the cars.

gopro's are one of the greatest products ever.

I mean, without them, how would we get video like this:

Singapore is going well for me so far, since Pamela is arriving on Monday then checking out of our hotel on Thursday, then I am arriving on Thursday afternoon with the reservation for the rest of the weekend, we have sorted with the hotel that they will assign the same room to both reservations so she can keep all her luggage in the room. Success!

    Morning all,

Here is an awesome in car camera (FROM 1994) of Mark Blundell at Spa. Awesome. Why don’t we have more of these?

This might sound like an odd thing to say, but I do not get the love for crystal clear and steady shots from an onboard camera. When I see an onboard now, I'm nearly always disappointed.

This was again drilled into me when I saw Senna a few months back - I couldn't help but think modern F1 footage makes the sport look painfully dull for the most part.

I don't care in the slightest about an ultra steady shot, where even strands of grass can be clearly seen. I want the onboards to reinforce how utterly violent these cars really are and the current footage does nothing to depict how difficult F1 is... which is a great, great shame.

However, I am probably in the minority here.

  • Journeyer14/09/2011 at 08:55

I think a balance has to be struck. While I do like having helmet cams from time to time (as they provide the most accurate view of what a driver can see), I can't stare at them too long since it moves around a lot and it makes me very dizzy. F1 may be a lovely blur of speed, but it can't always be blurry on TV.

Also true, which is why sparing use would be advised.

How well do you know your Formula 1 history?

The book That'll be the Day: 365 F1 Stories takes a look at significant moments or quirky happenings on this day in Grand Prix history. Can you guess what event the following describes?

    - Sebastian Vettel took his 1st win at Monza for Toro Rosso on 14 Sep in 2008, but who else joined him on the podium?

I've no interest in the cities that F1 decides to visit, they just represent background noise. I would rather it be at a racing track - a good one !!

  • Nick (@Twiger)14/09/2011 at 09:57

    Another possible street race..? Ughhhhh...

The problem is singapore did it and everyone raved about it despite a lack of decent action.

It was probably because all the races were pretty dull at the time. Hopefully this year will illustrate a bigger difference between street tracks and circuits & discourage them in future.

Monaco & Valencia havent been great

  • Christine14/09/2011 at 10:51

Not right now. Lots of empty grandstands at specialised circuits though. Less empty grandstands in cities.

we did silverstone. christine nearly died. you couldn't pay me enough cash to do that again. there has to be a better experience for fans.

Do Monza instead. It's a short hop from the centre of Milan and nice places to stay are plentifu

    :)

exactly, as long as they keep racing in mind when they design the tracks

  • Leigh O'Gorman14/09/2011 at 10:52

Not right now. Lots of empty grandstands at specialised circuits though. Less empty grandstands in cities.

Specialised circuits tend to be bigger capacity.

    What a shame they don't.

yes, and the beach is right behind the grandstand, you can go for swim between FP1 and FP2 :-)

  • Christine14/09/2011 at 10:52

Specialised circuits tend to be bigger capacity.

    Fair enough. Just an observation.

  • Amy14/09/2011 at 10:53

yes, and the beach is right behind the grandstand, you can go for swim between FP1 and FP2 :-)

Based on my plans for this weekend I think beach + sport is a pretty fantastic match up.

  • F1Wolf14/09/2011 at 10:54

oh yes, Monza is something else :-) that simply can't be compared to anything else

  • Leigh O'Gorman14/09/2011 at 10:54

    Fair enough. Just an observation.

Also, some of the street circuits have seen numbers fall slightly in recent years. The solution..? Less grandstands.

Even Monaco has far, far fewer stands than they did ten years ago.

  • F1Wolf14/09/2011 at 10:56

Even Monaco has far, far fewer stands than they did ten years ago.

OK, but Monaco is super super expensive and that may be the major factor ...

  • Amy14/09/2011 at 10:57

I went into my Eurotrip expecting to like Spa more but Monza knocked it out of the park.

  • Leigh O'Gorman14/09/2011 at 10:57

OK, but Monaco is super super expensive and that may be the major factor ...

Good point, but Monaco has always been super expensive. Melbourne's capacity has shrunk over the years too, so they removed stands. It's easy to make a place look fuller if you physically remove the empty spaces.

  • F1Wolf14/09/2011 at 10:58

i have no desire to ever sit in a freezing cold grandstand on an old disued airfield ever again. give me streets and a hotel window i can hang out of any day.

I know what you mean, I sat through that there 2 years ago, top row of the grandstand definitely not a good idea

  • Amy14/09/2011 at 11:02

i have no desire to ever sit in a freezing cold grandstand on an old disued airfield ever again. give me streets and a hotel window i can hang out of any day.

I am wondering what the chances of getting a room on the track side of the hotel is. I assume slim. But it would be nice, I'd spend my Thursday evening spying on people doing their track walk :D

    Depends on the circuit.

the point is why are those white elephants like Shanghai being built ... I am not going to produce and keep in stock million pieces of something if I know I can sell max 100K a year. why nobody is doing any research when building these tilkedromes ... megalomaniac designs + graft + the fees = high prices for tickets that few can afford = empty grandstands = wasted money for building them ...

not too many hotels offer that view, I think there is one only actually, somewhere near the end of the Padang straight, I think it is the cheaper of the Raffles ones, the tall one opposite the old one

I have the same dilema with the Melbourne hotel, I may be forced now to book 5 nights but the price per night is rather OK compared to what I paid before when I booked in December and for 3 nights only ... but few more people involved including the family so finalizing the possible Aussie trip itinerary that may have to include Sydney too is a bit complicated and may take a while

An F1 breakaway would probably end up like IndyCar basically. Organisers have been trying to throw together a cheaper "rival to F1" since the 70's and they've all fallen flat after a few years.

I think mr c would like it as it only has 9 races a year, the venues have beaches and tend to be in urban areas.

Todays races will be open water, but from tomorrow they will be tight 'stadium racing'

They've all reached the final of a domestic cup inside the last 8 years...

in terms of top clubs, with the most fans, they're all based in cities, aren't they?

    Technically...

  • Mr C14/09/2011 at 13:59

for reference, red bull recently brought a cliff to the center of boston, because they realised the audience won't travel to an actual real life cliff.

Is Manchester a place or nowhere?

  • Mr C14/09/2011 at 14:01

an f1 race around the streets of manchester would be very, very cool.

To be honest, I don't know what Manchester looks like.

to everyone who got soaked in spa last year - wouldn't it have been better if you could have hid in a shopping center and had a cup of tea to stay warm and dry?

I was at the Nurburgring in 2000 when it rained really heavily for the whole race day, but it was still great fun. I was there with friends and family and we made the best of it.

How many football stadiums have roofs? Do fans stay away if it rains during a match?

Nope. Honestly not, because I knew I was going back to a nice warm cabin. It's part of the experience of Spa and I wouldn't change that.

  • Mr C14/09/2011 at 14:18

it's built on acres of flat land. in london i could've hid in the warm. nowhere to hide in a field.

fair enough. i don't get the appeal to be honest, and falling crowd numbers for the same race seems to suggest i'm not alone. if fans really wanted to spend that much time in a field, spa wouldn't be alternating with france from next year.

i predict the same for silverstone within 10 years.

I'd argue that has more to do with race prices than where they are. As referred to earlier, street circuit numbers are also falling.

If it didn't cost €250 for a GA ticket I would go more than once every 15 years.

i guess we'll have to wait and see where f1 goes. my bet is more street tracks and circuits near a large body of people, rather than fields of sheep.

  • Alison14/09/2011 at 14:56

For me, it's just the price. I guess the sort of person that can regularly go to the races are more likely to go to one in a city.

  • Journeyer14/09/2011 at 15:00

...as long as they keep racing in mind when they design the tracks

    What a shame they don't.

Because you can't. You're restricted to what the design of the streets are. Which is why what Korea is trying to do is build the circuit first, then build a city IN the circuit.

  • Journeyer14/09/2011 at 15:01

Also, some of the street circuits have seen numbers fall slightly in recent years. The solution..? Less grandstands.

True. Even Singapore has reduced its grandstands. The grandstand I sat in 2008 was never rebuilt again.

  • Journeyer14/09/2011 at 15:03

that is the one :-) I stayed there once (not during F1), nice hotel, nothing wrong with it. but if you watch F1 from there you may be better off watching it on TV :-) it is a bit too far a and bit too high, cars too small :-)

I am pleased I booked in October last year because if I was to book it today the price per night is the same as the total price I paid for 4 nights :D

Wait, hang on. Amy, you're staying at the Pan Pacific?? Crazy. :O

    #planningmaster

And yes, I stayed there last year (non-F1 weekend too). Amazing room and lovely facilities. Food was rather disappointing, though.

  • Journeyer14/09/2011 at 15:04

Apparently di Resta will not lose any more FP1s this year. Also Robert Wickens is to do straight line testing for Virgin - how about putting him in on a Friday morning instead..?

Not enough money to make it happen?

  • Leigh O'Gorman14/09/2011 at 15:05

Not enough money to make it happen?

No idea to be honest. Wickens has never really been associated with big money, but he does have Manor support.

  • Journeyer14/09/2011 at 15:07

I think the appropriate word is "zing !! "

"Formula 1 was denied a similar certificate on the grounds that it is entertainment, not sport."

well at least someone agrees ;)

    F1 isn't quite wrestling, is it? ;)

But methinks they just feel they're not getting a big enough share of the pie. You'd think Vijay Mallya and Vicky Chandhok would go sort this out.

2011 is my year of staying where the teams stay. Going halves with Pamela makes things affordable :) and I just found $1.15 in my drawer from 2008. If I keep that up my trip pays for itself. I also found all the charger bits for my Fanision. I've missed it! I am a little mad at it though :(

True, but it's no use trying to be the first non-Villeneuve F1 Canadian if he can't even get in in the first place.

True, but it's no use trying to be the first non-Villeneuve F1 Canadian if he can't even get in in the first place.

This puzzled me a lot. Virgin went through all this hoo-haa about signing this Canadian on the Wednesday before the Montreal GP --- and then didn't even put into FP1...

On the other hand, if d'Ambrosio didn't return in 2012, I would expect Wickens there - I think he's good enough at least.

  • Amy14/09/2011 at 15:19

    mad at fanvision?

I feel a bit like they haven't delivered a few things they said they would - the online portal with software updates etc. When they told me in Malaysia that full screen video would be in the next update I assumed that it might be here by the time I ot to Singapore but nope, there is no online anything, they still have to email out an activation code to everyone who has bought one each race. I take this to mean there is 0.00% chance of it ever working at home via wifi.

Next year the rental cost per race is €55 and the activation for owners is £30. I reckon more than half the rental price is too much when you shell out so much up front anyway. The marketing all said a small fee for 2012 but €30 per race adds up if you do more than one.

  • Mr C14/09/2011 at 15:20

I think it's shocking the price you pay for supporting them and buying their product....

The benefit of buying is supposed to be price where if you rent you might expect to get the newest most up to date equipment. If it's going to take you so long to recoup the cost, I don't see why anyone would buy. I guess the costs weren't advertised before?

I think Schumi acted well. In fact, I was delighted with his driving style.

It's good to see aggressive driving when no one gets hurt, whether Schuey was beyond the line or not is another matter. A steward shouldn't wait for an action to be reported if he thinks it needs investigation. Regretting it afterwards is either pandering to the media or hindsight

  • Steven Roy14/09/2011 at 17:54

I think Schumi acted well. In fact, I was delighted with his driving style.

He was moving around in the braking zones and making more than one move. Ross Brawn was on the radio to him to tell him to sort his act out. What he did was outrageous. It is only because of him we have a one move rule. Before him it wasn't needed.

That's F1. If you want to pass someone, you can't expect him to slow down!

No-one expects him to slow down. Just pick a line and stick to it.

We now have a steward after the race saying he should be penalised. After the last race we had video showing he should have had two penalties in th first lap and a half

McNish is still racing. I don't think drivers who are still racing should be stewards

Daly is right to say what he said but it is outrageous no-one involved in the stewarding process noticed it at the time. Ross Brawn was telling Schumacher to sort his act out because apparently CHarlie told him. What were the stewards doing when that was going on? Enjoying their FIA hospitality?

you want ex-f1 drivers, who no longer race to be the 4th steward? are there any? moss maybe, who else?

  • Bassano14/09/2011 at 18:03

Is Alesi only in the private sector now?

I want drivers who are not racing at a high level. Occasional racers like Mansell and co are fine but serious racers have a conflict of interest. Besides I thought the point was to have people who had been top F1 drivers and McNish's F1 record is nowhere good enough to qualify. Neither is Tom Kristensen's

Imagine Alesi as a steward. Very scary

Apart from his career long inability to make a decision he works for one team and couldn't contemplate penalising Ferrari. He is really just a fan who could drive

  • Steven Roy14/09/2011 at 18:07

    who said "top"?

That was my understanding and expectation of the original idea.

Derek Daly's record is not good enough either

  • Mr C14/09/2011 at 18:08

That was my understanding and expectation of the original idea.

i only ever heard "former driver" mentioned.

  • Bassano14/09/2011 at 18:10

Then Steven should be a Steward

  • Steven Roy14/09/2011 at 18:12

Then Steven should be a Steward

My eyes work and I would want to watch the live feed to see what was happening rather than being distracted by Charlie sending odd jobs in.

The one thing we don't know is which offence Daly thinks is worth penalising

  • Alison14/09/2011 at 18:14

Then Steven should be a Steward

    That would be epic

I think it's because Steven and Christine are friends, you're automatically subscribed to your friends and information from them pops up on your home.

I mean on your page! You have to opt in to allow people to subscribe to you. You can only subscribe to those who have consented which is why random people's profiles don't have the option.

Sorry I can't be friends any more

Hehe if you're friends, you get the same updates as being subscribed as far as I can see. Previously being friends was an automatic subscription so to speak. I think you can now have the option to silence those annoying friends that just leave lame messages about their cute babies....

  • Mr C14/09/2011 at 18:33

now you're subscribed. can you be friends again, or is that madness?

  • Steven Roy14/09/2011 at 18:35

now you're subscribed. can you be friends again, or is that madness?

Who knows. I guess Christine has to post something that should only go to friends and not subscribers so we can see what happens

  • Lynch14/09/2011 at 18:37

if you hover over the subscribe button when you have subbed.. you get options!

  • Alison14/09/2011 at 18:38

now you're subscribed. can you be friends again, or is that madness?

I tried. Maybe Christine doesn't want to be my friend.

  • Alison14/09/2011 at 18:40

I tried. Maybe Christine doesn't want to be my friend.

No the whole panel of buttons has now vanished.

  • Alison14/09/2011 at 18:41

I do see the friends only update though which wasn't there before.

  • Mr C14/09/2011 at 18:41

No the whole panel of buttons has now vanished.

so, once you become a friend, subscriptions vanish?

  • Mr C14/09/2011 at 18:41

I do see the friends only update though which wasn't there before.

okay, this makes sense now. cheers,

  • Steven Roy14/09/2011 at 18:41

That is interesting. The subscriber is in control

  • Alison14/09/2011 at 18:42

so, once you become a friend, subscriptions vanish?

Yup, all gone, my name is gone from the subscribers list too.

  • Mr C14/09/2011 at 18:45

i wonder if people would be annoyed if christine unfriended everyone and started again with subscriptions instead. it seems to be a better system.

  • Alison14/09/2011 at 18:45

Does Christine get to choose? ;)

  • Alison14/09/2011 at 18:46

I don't think anyone, save perhaps family members would be all that offended tbh.

  • Steven Roy14/09/2011 at 18:46

i wonder if people would be annoyed if christine unfriended everyone and started again with subscriptions instead. it seems to be a better system.

Some people would. Maybe worth posting something saying she is trying subscriptions to see how they work so not really unfriending them

  • Steven Roy14/09/2011 at 18:47

Does Christine get to choose? ;)

They need to opt in to be subscribed

  • Mr C14/09/2011 at 18:48

no, i mean. to clean up her timeline which is currently full of people with the babies and pictures of cats.

Hehehe yes everyone has that problem!

    but maybe not any longer...

  • Alison14/09/2011 at 18:51

I personally would take zero offence. I can't see why anyone would particularly. I guess you need to warn people or they won't know they need to subscribe.

For someone like Christine, where most of her "friends" are probably people she doesn't even know....

  • Alison14/09/2011 at 18:57

I'm not sure I like the idea of lifting all the privacy setting and letting people randomly subscribe to you though. Do you have the option to block people you specifically dont want to subscribe?

Ever since the Reading Festival was on BBC3 I can't seem to stop humming various Pulp fans. I wish Jarvis Cocker told me before he had written some good songs.

An iPad app for musicians. Brilliant idea

The app doesn't just display sheet music, but it listens to users as they play, and automatically turns pages as the song advances.
