Welcome to a daily post with a difference. You see, the rather wonderful Mrs Christine has spent the past four days being beyond fabulous in so many ways I thought I ought highlight some of her efforts, lest they pass unnoticed.

Before I continue though, a quick disclaimer - I have not broken anything, nor lost anything, or caused any damage for which I might need to grovel, apologise or otherwise write this post. I am not in any trouble at all (at least not yet).

What I have been this past week is busy doing non-Sidepodcast things, which left Christine to manage this and all our other sites, alone. Apart from lending a hand on Sunday afternoon during the Grand Prix, everything listed below - including solo live coverage of qualifying - came from one person.

F1 for all

Posts on Sidepodcast during a race weekend are usually consistent from one GP to the next, but the text doesn't write itself. The following were published between Friday morning and Monday evening.

Note: The guide to reading Kindle books was half written in advance but tidied up yesterday. Breakout transcriptions contain content from the live text coverage. Tweets technically write themselves, but someone has to pick the best 10, out of the thousands published every week.

F1 in the news

There's more to Christine than just text. She records 60 second audio shows any time an F1 story breaks. The following stories were written, recorded and published during the past four days.

F1 in technicolor

More than just words and sounds, there are pictures too. Big pictures.

Almost all of the content linked above came from one person. I cannot even guess what the word count my be. There are 27(ish) posts in total and that doesn't include personal content published on MrsChristine.com. I rarely get a chance to look in on this from the outside, but I did this weekend and I am truly in awe.

That is how hard Christine works on F1 content, and all because she loves what she does.

In return, I erm... well I made a heart.

That is an incredible amount of work when you list it like that.

I am not in any trouble at all

    Are you sure?

These boys are going to be nakkered for Davis Cup this weekend. It makes me happy Rog is already here/is almost here.

no idea if this has been shared / discussed, but onboard of lewis v. schumi in monza.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z3le-WBlVKs

amazing there was no penalty for that.

  • Steven Roy13/09/2011 at 00:24

amazing there was no penalty for that.

I was amazed that Ross Brawn was warning him about his driving so clearly. Add getting away with this to his first lap and a half at Spa and you have to wonder how he gets away with it.

I can't see Lewis getting away with that lot

  • Amy13/09/2011 at 00:28

yaaaaay Nole! This year must have sucked if you hate him.

  • Steven Roy13/09/2011 at 00:31

    Did he win then?

Is it possible to hate a tennis player?

    Time for bed I think.

Hopefully I will feel healthier in the morning

  • Journeyer13/09/2011 at 00:37

amazing there was no penalty for that.

schumi was just following the racing line, though.

I was amazed that Ross Brawn was warning him about his driving so clearly. Add getting away with this to his first lap and a half at Spa and you have to wonder how he gets away with it.

it was definitely upon Charlie's advice. can't see how it wasn't.

I can't see Lewis getting away with that lot

to be fair, had roles been reversed, i don't think Lewis should've been penalized, either.

  • Journeyer13/09/2011 at 00:38

yaaaaay Nole! This year must have sucked if you hate him.

Just as well I don't. :D Prefer him over Rafa, that's for sure.

  • Amy13/09/2011 at 01:43

Is it possible to hate a tennis player?

ooohhhh yes. A lot of people hate players for stupid reasons like "he beat my favourite, once, 8 years ago"

  • Bridget13/09/2011 at 01:52

Is it possible to hate a tennis player?

ooohhhh yes. A lot of people hate players for stupid reasons like "he beat my favourite, once, 8 years ago"

Isn't that the reason all Massa fans have at least a bit of ongoing antipathy for Hamilton? I actively hated him for at least a full year after he overtook Glock on the last lap in Brazil.

It means that MotoGP may also wind up having 20 rounds by then - following F1's lead. However, they will have 4 races in the Americas to F1's 3.

Same here. I saw a white car move over on Tonio, but there was no way he would have made it anyway. Considering Tonio's reputation for being a tad reckless, it's as hard to defend him as it would if it was Hamilton there.

of note, this is a great example of why every driver needs twitter. heikki can accuse tonio of anything in a tweet, but how can he respond?

Well Tonio used press releases to blame Heikki and Heikki responded using Twitter. Some of the IndyCar drivers have had some great cat fights on Twitter though ;)

FF is not FF any more. Sequential gearboxes, side intrustion panels, huge sidepods, fuel injection

I honestly cannot remember the last time I saw an FF race where a wheel came off and I watch these races a lot. It depends on the forces going through them I suppose.

    Any open wheel is risky

True, but how utterly rarely do you see any accident like that. Admittedly the height reached is a much bigger concern there.

  • Steven Roy13/09/2011 at 15:01

i know. but the trend seems to be to cover them. if you're reinventing a chassis, why go in the opposite direction?

Because the whole ethos of FFord is zero aero. As soon as you start covering wheels people will find ways to generate downforce. Even 50kg of downforce would be a huge advantage in these. Even just allowing the various chassis makers to reduce drag would push costs through the roof

  • Mr C13/09/2011 at 15:04

Because the whole ethos of FFord is zero aero.

even at the expense of safety? karts don't have aero (normally), but their wheels are much more enclosed by the frame.

they could at least add rollbars front and rear.

  • Steven Roy13/09/2011 at 15:04

True, but how utterly rarely do you see any accident like that. Admittedly the height reached is a much bigger concern there.

I have seen the odd one fly but I have been watching FFord an average of 10 race meetings a year for over 25 years and I don't think I am close to double figures yet. Generally the suspension collapses first.

I have had a few dozen spins/crashes in them and never once thought I was leaving the ground

  • Nick (@Twiger)13/09/2011 at 15:06

even at the expense of safety? karts don't have aero (normally), but their wheels are much more enclosed by the frame.

F1 cars dont really protect the front wheels, other than the front wings which collapse off quite easily when exposed to vertical forces

  • Journeyer13/09/2011 at 15:06
  • Steven Roy13/09/2011 at 15:11

they could at least add rollbars front and rear.

FFord drivers are known for being robust shall we say. Giving them bumpers of any kind would increase the problem.

even at the expense of safety?

I don't think the risk is that big. What they have down with side intrusion panels and the like are huge steps forward.

At almost any race meeting you can guarantee that there will be more crashes in the FFord races than everything else put together and I am struggling to think of a serious injury ever. And I have seen these cars totally destroyed. The year before he picked up his Marlboro deal McNish totally wiped out an old Mondiale through the Esses at Ingliston. It looked like the remains of a plane crash and the car was at least 5 years old so had been on the receiving end of a lot of abuse but he walked away

  • Mr C13/09/2011 at 15:11

I have argued for years that F1 should protect all the wheels properly

  • Steven Roy13/09/2011 at 15:14

That looks like a proper crash structure on the rear too. Last time I looked it was still just the Hewland gearbox there

Almost certainly but I cannot think of a serious injury still after about an hour. THe only serious injury I can think of at an FFord race was when a helicopter dropped out of the sky but that had nothing to do with racing

I am not claiming that no-one ever got hurt or killed in them simply that I have been at hundreds of races and read about thousands more and I am struggling to come up with one serious injury

The first PC I used was an HP Vectra in 1988. The company bought 8 of then at £8000 each

When I was in school there was a lunchtime club where we learned BASIC. We sent our stuff of to the technical college 20 miles away because they had a mainframe in the basement with 8 terminals on it. They sent us back punch cards with out 'code' and the print outs of the results we had generated. At the end of the year we got to visit it and see punch cards being made. Really high tech

My school bought Acorns instead. That was really popular with the pupils who were buying Windows 95 PCs or Macs, and couldn't make their homework open (from floppy disc!) once they got to school.

    heheh!

Ahh good old floppy disks. They once let me scare my nephew because i told him if you take off the springy silver bit all your work falls out and it freaked him out. To be 8 again.

:) Well I suppose that did make them unuseable.

The black 5.25" floppies looked so old fashioned when the shiny smaller blue ones came out.

  • Pat W13/09/2011 at 18:36

I had one of those too. It had a great racing game that only had Silverstone as a track and the thing had so few colours they had to make the tyres red. THe games and anything else loaded from a cassette recorder

I bet it still took ten minutes to load like all my Amstrad games. :)

I tried learning BASIC on BBC and whatever the Amstrad equivalent was, could only manage the basics ironically enough. A friend was a lot better at it.

At least. Fortunately the graphics were a bit low res or it would have taken all night

It transpires Brawn's coded 'stop weaving' radio messages to Schumacher were prompted by race control. It's not supposed to work that way.

Vettel's Infiniti is awful, but I think that the worst thing of it are the lights. Strange design. Wonder how much will he have earned...

  • Marti13/09/2011 at 19:16

Anyway, I wonder why Infiniti didn't design a sport-style car.

To create a Crossover with Vettel's name is something weird.

they're not designed so much for people who already comment on spc, think of it as for people to discover new facebook friends with similar interests.

i naturally assume all regular commenters will instantly hate them, i expect no less.

i have high hopes for the new comments, the response to the pre-race facebook poll was astounding and there's a lot of hidden power in there that we simply can't do here. more integration will follow soon.

bootnote: facebook's comments have the added advantage that legal responsibility appears to rest with facebook, not christine, so you can go discuss politics to your hearts content and we won't moan or have to delete anything.

I'm in a Speed.com sportscar Q&A chat with some journos and insiders.. rumour has it that McLaren may build an LMP1 car in 2014. One of them said if/when they do it, it'll be a 'game changer'. But first they'll make a GTE/GT2 version of the GT3 car.

I'm in a Speed.com sportscar Q&A chat with some journos and insiders.. rumour has it that McLaren may build an LMP1 car in 2014

I wonder if now that F1 teams have more people than they can use and are sending them off to other teams the next stage is to put them to work on a sportscar program. If McLaren were successful in LMP! could Ferrari stay away or would they feel they had to get involved. Newey has often talked about doing other things so maybe a sportscar program on the side would be a way to keep him happy at Red Bull

  • Pat W13/09/2011 at 23:03

Just a rumour, may not happen, we can dream. I hope they do. :)

Quite a bit of upheaval in the ACO series though. LMS running out of entries/support, Petit not part of WEC next year (unless something changes), and ACO hasn't agreed ALMS licensing renewal yet so it might have to change name..

Interesting to see if they do sportscars or anything really. Would be fun for Ferrari to follow McLaren, I suppose it depends what the rule changes will be for energy recovery and all that stuff Ferrari generally doesn't like.

A Newey LMP would be fun to see.

I never thought McLaren would do LMP though, figured they'd do an Indy aero kit instead.

12 years old now I think, not so new any more. I agree though, it needs to be in there. They were saying the ACO wants to nab Sebring for itself and leave Petit for ALMS.. but IMSA wouldn't let the former happen in a million years.

  • Steven Roy13/09/2011 at 23:14
