Hello everyone and welcome once again to the Monday after a race. It always feels slightly melancholy, doesn't it? Knowing that the result has been decided and history shaped, for better or worse.

It was a thrilling race, the sort that holds one's rapt attention throughout, without a lapse in concentration long enough to contemplate the need for a cookie. Alonso had a fantastic start and beat Vettel into the first corner. Liuzzi, on the other hand, decided to take the first corner backwards, causing mayhem and carnage and ending more than one race.

Vitaly: "lucky not to be injured"

OfficialLRGP's Twitter avatarOfficialLRGP

He got a slap on the wrist for his achievements. After the safety car, Vettel was allowed to go and play in his corner, often more than ten seconds in front of the rest of the pack. Senna scored his first F1 points; he was thrilled; this is the reason I made you click on and listen to the Brazilian national anthem while you read this. For a broader picture of what happened:

The race highlights.

The results.

The post-race interviews. Alonso was almost shy when he apologised to Vettel for needing to fight harder.

The updated driver standings.

Today's geek section is devoted to plants. I suspect, if the yellowing of the leaves is anything to go by, that summer will be gone from this part of the world (Edinburgh) before I next write a daily, so I decided to have one last toast to their awesomeness.

If you've ever wanted to hear an Italian man explain about the intelligence of plants and the possibility of using concepts borrowed from them in networks, click here.

This one is for you lovely Sidepodspace geeks: what plants would look like on other planets.

And finally, a few words about weather prediction and a question that I've wanted to know the answer to for a while.

Hehe, I felt like it would be fun, since Bruno did something major today and nobody plays his national anthem to celebrate it ;) I'm sorry Christine didn't feel the same; sleep is best done in silence, though.

Employers suck like that. Just know that if you do click on it, there are subtitles with the words and their translations in the video.

Mwahaha! I hadn't thought of that. The origin of the "one shoop" thought (in my mind anyway) was before my discovery of Cher.

Oh? I didn't know there was tennis being played. Who won? The only non-motorsport result I know is that a few days ago India kicked Zimbabwe's bum in cricket in a match in a friend's city.

Ooh! I should find a bar and watch that! Rafa is lovely to watch. I wonder if the place under George IV Bridge that has Cameron Brig for £2.80 a nip has sports channels.

I've just watched the GP. Good race! Mixed feelings about Schumacher, it was classic Schumi both the good and the bad. He knows exactly how to place his car which was good, the blocking... awful. Glad he got a talking to at long last.

The fight for 2nd in WDC is on.

Indeed he has a point - particularly on DRS. But he is exaggerating a bit - we've some amazing overtakes that had no DRS involvement whatsoever.

it is not only about the DRS, but like for example yesterday must have been really confusing day for a random spectator. all the pre-race talk about gear rations long, short 7th gear etc ... then during the race all the "hitting the limiter" stuff ... not exactly user friendly Formula ...

well, I just feel it a bit too much to digest for someone who is not an F1 geek. the technology and technology limits may not be the culprit, just the way it is presented and explained

I would compare it to humble myself watching rugby. I simply gave up on ever understanding the penalty calls. so I do watch sometime, I do enjoy it sometime but often I have no idea what caused the game deciding call from the referee :-)

True, i dont think aesthetics will be so much of an issiue. F1 drivers have strong necks, but not hugely.

We will see a female driver one day, but its a bit like getting an f1 driver from say the UAE. first there needs to be a reasonable number going though the junior categories to increace the chances of finding someone with enough talent to make it all the way to F1. At the moment there just arent enough women in the lower categories.

    Here we go.

    For example, Barrichello, laps 11-31:

    1:32.407; 1:31.898; 1:31.944; 1:31.730; 1:31.483; 1:31.506; 1:31.652;

    1:31.244; 1:31.148; 1:31.092; 1:32.072; 1:30.709; 1:30.614; 1:31.356

    Kovalainen from laps 11-31:

    1:32.043; 1:31.978; 1:31.701; 1:31.820; 1:32.035; 1:31.929; 1:32.213

    1:31.843; 1:31.984; 1:32.905; 1:36.554 [pits]; 1:51.699; 1:31.735; 1:31.205

    1:31.414; 1:32.120; 1:31.168; 1:31.029; 1:33.014; 1:30.702; 1:31.045

I watched last night with the timing app and I noticed it too, because I wanted to see how far he got up the field. He only got faster in the final stint, into the 1:28s while Kovi got to high 1:29s I think.

I also noticed Barrichello didn't catch the safety car train before the restart, he came out of the pits and was at speed trying to catch up but was still a quarter of a lap behind.

Tony Fernandes has changed his mind (more publically) so the Caterham Team Lotus speculation seems likely now.

"I always had a problem with 'am I really Team Lotus?"

  • RubberGoat12/09/2011 at 11:11

Looks like Team Lotus changing their name is a done deal then: http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/94515

RG is gonna love this bit:

Speaking to AUTOSPORT, Fernandes said: "I always had a problem with 'am I really Team Lotus?' I always said that era was theirs, we were just bringing it back under new ownership. It was up to the fans whether they liked us or not.

"But there was a business behind it as well. You can't have a name and not monetise it. Effectively we are marketing someone else. I don't think this is healthy for anyone – Lotus Renault, Team Lotus, whomever.

"I've always said that protecting the brand is paramount and it's not me that started all this. I didn't have a claim, they (Group Lotus) had a claim. And they lost that case. But I've always had the door open and it may be a win-win for everybody and we walk away.

"I also always said we wanted to be in the car business and I never hid that fact. And now we have Caterham."

  • Pat W12/09/2011 at 11:12

Tony Fernandes has changed his mind (more publically) so the Caterham Team Lotus speculation seems likely now.

Longer interview I haven't read yet.

Oddly he wants to move the team already.

    Part of it anyway,

I guess Nofolk isnt really that important if you aren't Lotus. Hes a cost cutter and if its cheaper to be further north then thats where they will go

  • F1Wolf12/09/2011 at 11:18

"I always had a problem with 'am I really Team Lotus?"

if I were him I would have the same problem. he owns the name Team Lotus but in fact he is promoting other peoples cars ... that was surely not part of his original plan ...

re moving the team - it was nice and romantic vision to revive Team Lotus in Norfolk but a) the Team Lotus will not be Lotus for much longer and b) he can clearly see that to be near Silverstone is kind of a must if one wants to operate successful F1 team out of England. Mr Booth and Virgin are realizing the same now as well ...

Fernandes is simply being pragmatic as anybody who wants to be successful in business has to be ...

  • Nick (@Twiger)12/09/2011 at 11:20

Fernandes is simply being pragmatic as anybody who wants to be successful in business has to be ...

I guess another big question is 'does he want to make money out of the f1 team?'

Or be like red bull & ferrari to an extent where it is a loss leader to promote other things

  • Nick (@Twiger)12/09/2011 at 11:21

  • Leigh O'Gorman12/09/2011 at 11:22

    Team Loftus

    Team Caterham

    Team Tony

    ....

I think he does not necessarily need to make money of an F1 team or out of his QPR investment. but he is obviously clever and he plans to use both to help him grow the business that does make money

look at it this way - compare the visibility the AIr Asia brand received during all those years sponsoring Williams with the season and a half of Fernandes owning F1 team himself ...

  • F1Wolf12/09/2011 at 11:24

    In that case, he has a choice of brands, such as;

    :D

This gives me an idea - should the FIA introduce punishment by installment? For example, if Liuzzi qualifies 24th, he can't be moved further back, so his 5-place grid penalty should stand. If he qualifies 23rd, he can only move back 1 place, so he still has 4 places remaining to serve for his penalty, which he'd need to serve completely - on a race-by-race basis, if needed.

Nice idea, I quite like that. You wouldn't want to keep getting penalties then as they would add up.

The other thing they could do is actually put him in the 29th grid spot.

I think it's cute. He's managed a concept that must've cost very little to produce (as in: pay the vinyl factory; procure a single camera and set of lights; hire four crew members and get on with it) and still manages to be visually appealing.

Wherever he goes, it just needs to be far away from drivers I support. Rosberg's season has been going reasonably well and he got taken out by someone who couldn't accept that he was driving a car that would only ever qualify 23rd.

Agreed. Liuizzi moves across the white line, runs out of road and tries to cut back in. All the while Kovalainen is holding his line without moving, until he cuts left to give Liuzzi room. Liuzzi then tries to go around a white car (Perez?) by driving on the grass.

    #IndyCar

Just listening to last week's Trackside and about half way through, Cavin and Lee are talking about Brian Barnhart at the Sonoma race around the time of the re-arrangement of the lapped cars.

While BB is often excused as a difficult job (I'm sure it is), the way it is explained and the reaction of Barnhart to the drivers (often shouting angrily down the radio at drivers) gives me an impression of someone who is somewhat out of their depth.

  • Bridget12/09/2011 at 15:11

Aye indeed! It's quite telling that a rookie coming in halfway through the season makes fewer stupid mistakes.

technically, it was almost the best start of the season!

Rosberg does have an unfortunate habit of choosing teams that don't give him a good enough car to do better. He'd kick ass if he was in a faster car!

I think the only worthy penalty would be to hit him on the head with a wooden spoon. The move was so dumb it's not like there's many brains up there anyway ;)

Hehe, true dat! I know Alonso rates him, but I don't see what the fuss is about. I don't know enough of what happens in the paddock to know if his poor performance is because of Piquet Jr/Renault-like reasons, but he's not great at keeping a cool head. In terms of safety, well, I refer you to the first paragraph of point 5 here http://sidepodcast.com/post/5-reasons-why-di-grassi-deserves-a-drive-next-season

Agreed. Liuizzi moves across the white line, runs out of road and tries to cut back in. All the while Kovalainen is holding his line without moving, until he cuts left to give Liuzzi room. Liuzzi then tries to go around a white car (Perez?) by driving on the grass.

Idiot. There are times when one should fight; conversely, there are times when one should concentrate on getting the job done, rather than trying to be a hero (perhaps he should read what Senna said after his first Friday Practice drive with Renault?)

we saw a lot of the thermo cam and saw that 3d turn 1 once - but neither really interested me. i do hope we see more of the helmet cam though.

it can show things the camera misses. so in spa, what actually happened between lewis and pastor.

in italy, how much heikki moved over on liuzzi. etc.

Yes thanks, really good. I had a good old explore in different grandstands.

It was a bit windy though! And I couldn't really hear the commentary as my in-ear headphones wouldn't fit in my ears.

The lead battle was fantastic, the lead changed several times. I got lucky with this one.

Sad thing is i have to leave my little car here for a bit :( I shall miss felipe.

Absolutely but leaks are not the easiest things to avoid/

    The sea is pretty mighty!

But you just build most of it out of leak-proof stuff that's corrosion-resistant and keep a close eye on the seals at the joints. Yes, there's a bit of effort involved in a daily seal check, but if you use as many long stretches of pipe as possible, it shouldn't be too onerous.

It doesn't seem to work like that in nuclear plants

Most Google centres probably don't contain stuff that will cause an agonising death if you stand too close to it. Perhaps the risk of potential death has something to do with the willingness of staff to go around checking seals. Maybe it's the technology they're using to test the seals, although one would think nuclear plant manufacturers would have a huge R&D department dealing with just that.

Nuclear plants should be a lot more motivated to avoid leaks but there are constant stories of radioactive materials as a result of leaks.

I have no knowledge of tennis. I know Murray lost in a semi recently so I guess this is the final now with whoever beat him in it
