It’s another Friday and it’s another opportunity for myself, myself being Lukeh of course, to introduce this final day of the week before another weekend of Formula 1 action. Of course, what with it being Monaco this weekend we’re all in bizarro land and practise was actually yesterday instead of today. If you’re expecting practise today then, well, you may be a tad disappointed my friends. Still, it’s Friday! So what wealth of information do we have to discuss thanks to the power of the bullet points this week?

  • As I’ve mentioned Monaco has it’s practise sessions on a Thursday, with the results for Session 1 and Session 2 available for your viewing. Both were typical practise sessions – nothing remarkable to point out. Kamui Kobayashi managed to crash at one point of course, so normal service was resuming in Monaco clearly. Hopefully this weekend we’ll get a good race – the weather reports have continually hinted at rain so who knows...
  • Codemasters had the very kind nature in them to upload another developer’s diary regarding the development of their Formula 1 2010 game. The new diary studies the way that weather affects not only the track in the game but the car you’re driving and the AI drivers too looking for puddles and adapting to the climate. It looks like a remarkable weather system included in the game and has only made me more excited for the release of F1 2010 in September!
  • I have quite literally spent my week coding and coding for my penultimate assignment and it is driving me nuts. PHP should be renamed to SLIS – Silly Language is Silly. Although I prefer it to the horrid experience that is C++. Me and C++ get on like fire and ice. If PHP is Rubens being at Brawn then C++ is Rubens at Ferrari under Darth Schumacher, definitely. Sorry, I’m probably boring you now but I have a point to this coding malarkey – Mr C has been redesigning the homepage once again and it looks really lovely at the moment. It has a realtime button! So sweeeet! I heart that button and the fat hearts in the comments at the bottom as well.

Well that’s another Daily from yours truly, I hope I haven’t disappointed or annoyed. Remember to head over to my Formula 1 blog Gridwalk Talk after races to see what I feel races deserve to be graded and a report card for each race – one of my career aspirations is to be a teacher so perhaps I am making an ultimate combination there. Remember to also check out the massive achievement for Sidepodcast in reaching 3000 posts this week, something that blows my mind just staring at that number. Nevertheless, as ever it’s been a joy to write this and I hope to see you in the comment at some point today.

a couple of site updates for today:

    - added link to more detailed standings on homepage sidebar

    - added calendar to homepage sidebar

    - added random post button to homepage sidebar and posts sidebar

a couple of site updates for today:

Nice. Could you put the random button near to the 'one year ago' thing? I think they'd fit together.

ooh, very possibly. went for consistency with the other sidebar, but it does make sense.

  • Pat W13/05/2010 at 23:31

I had quite a productive evening

    - talked to a man about a house, a scheme where you pay part rent and part mortgage, makes it cheaper than buying outright.... i still can't afford it though, stupid expensive houses in a low wage area.. something to shoot for though.

    - made scrambled eggs. i can't cook and am scared to try so i don't bother but i really fancied them, google is useful. feel a bit silly now i know they are so easy

    - big tidy of rubbish and recycling.

    - watched GP2 Spain '09 Sprint, and an ep of The Wire (just realised I've got to hit 3.5 of them per day before it is wiped from BT Vision.. left it a bit late)

I'm heading for an early night, catch you some time Friday

  • me13/05/2010 at 23:34

i missed the developer's diary last time lukeh linked to one in the daily. i swear i've seen it this time.

it's an advert, he just just bought the position using google ads. i guess the names weren't hotly contested keywords, or he was happy to pay the price.

I just put the word out in my office that I want extra hours at the start and end of each day and on Saturdays from 31/5 until 15/8. I might die from exhaustion but at least I won't have time to spend the extra money i'll be earning. I'm tired already just thinking about it. I just need to remember being able to afford to eat in Europe will be worth it :D

  • Amy14/05/2010 at 06:05

In my desperation I appear to have agreed to work until 10pm tomorrow night. I shall have to miss Q1 unless I get sent home early!

    Hello everyone!

I just completely wiped my laptop to start afresh. I am using my sister's desktop, so it might lag a little.

Any ideas on the first program I should install (once it is done restoring)?

  • Alex Andronov14/05/2010 at 08:10

I know that makes it all the more realistic... Because he can't really turn around and serve it to somebody.

    cluedo!

  • Alex Andronov14/05/2010 at 09:00

    Crazy fool.

Well it hadn't gone off for 1,000 years apparently so it was semi-dormant. Apparently that's okay.

It echoed underfoot when I stomped down my foot. Katherine didn't like the stomping down especially when after one stomp I stepped on a shell type thing and there was a cracking noise...

But luckily I survived Katherine exploding ;)

  • Alex Andronov14/05/2010 at 09:02

want. I looooove board games. My whole life I've tried to have a social circle that finds board game nights acceptable. I have failed.

I love board games too... Luckily I get to play them pretty regularly. The ideal option is to have a partner who likes board games too. And then all you need is a pool of people who might give it a go and you can invite them over. Mostly games only need a minimum of 3 players.

  • Alex Andronov14/05/2010 at 09:02

    cluedo!

    oooh....

He has a Spanish game called Alhambra which is very complicated but can be interesting. You have to build a village using little tiles.

  • me14/05/2010 at 11:25

"After the mad dash from Barcelona-to-Grove-to-Monaco, our Comms girl Claire Williams felt she deserved a good night’s sleep yesterday. So she checked into the Quai des Princes hotel, where she was given the keys to a room belonging to a McLaren engineer."

    hello!

"When this happened a second time, the hotel fessed up: Claire would have to sleep in one of the hotel’s broom cupboards...They’d clearly underestimated the wrath of Ms Williams and a room was quickly found!"

    :)

The trial of Nigel Stepney started in Sassuolo, Italy this week. He is accused of trying to sabotage the Ferraris before the 2007 Monaco Grand Prix with white powder. Stepney’s lawyers have indicated that they wish to plea bargain, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport. Stepney himself will appear before the court on May 21.

amazing, but i guess it meant Vettel had to drive smoother. and possibly as a result of that and lighter fuel, he managed to get a good S2 time. also, IIRC, there's only one real heavy braking zone in that sector, right?

  • Journeyer14/05/2010 at 11:33

i saw that, its both impressive and stupid

:D Well, he managed to finish 3rd, so no harm done, but had he gone off, Schumi woulda been on the podium. Aw shucks...

I'm glad he didn't loose a place but with 3 brakes and a 20 second lead, he really didnt need to be pushing that hard

Didn't he lose a place to Alonso? It's all faded into a mystery blur in my head...

To a certain extent, it shows just how good Vettel and the RB6 are.

ah yes, I meant after he'd lost that place and it was clear he'd lost a brake.

  • Journeyer14/05/2010 at 11:44

Didn't he lose a place to Alonso? It's all faded into a mystery blur in my head...

Vettel lost the place because he pitted after going off. But the off itself didn't cost him any places.

  • Alison14/05/2010 at 11:46

Vettel lost the place because he pitted after going off. But the off itself didn't cost him any places.

Ah yes I see. Did he gain anything from pitting really? He could have held that place?

Not sure what they did, to be honest. I think it was to change tyres (after he went off) plus a precautionary check. Can anyone confirm?

  • Marilene Riddle14/05/2010 at 11:50

Not sure what they did, to be honest. I think it was to change tyres (after he went off) plus a precautionary check. Can anyone confirm?

That's right. Cause his off into the gravel hurt his tyres (suspected), plus they wanted to see what else they could do (but ended up doing nothing else).

  • Alison14/05/2010 at 11:51

Not sure what they did, to be honest. I think it was to change tyres (after he went off) plus a precautionary check. Can anyone confirm?

You heard his radio at the time when he went off. It was basically like "AAAAARGH where are the brakes????" He went to the pit, they said oh look no brakes and let him go again...

"With wheelbases over three metres, the difference in team’s wheelbases is just a few percent and not enough to have a primary advantage over the other factors differentiating the cars. His yacht was parked in the harbour. I think we expected it.

Indeed. But if you look at the motorhome at the right... he just came from the FIA motorhome, it seems...

Well no. They weren't allowed to ban him. I think in theory Red Bull or whoever could hire him as a team principle if they wanted....

  • Journeyer14/05/2010 at 13:42

Not until 2013, due to a subsequent out-of-court settlement. But it is true that Flavio cannot be banned from the paddock or any non-operational role in F1.

My LCM teams have had two changes for Monaco. In LCM Caro, Webber has replaced Button due to Button no longer being expensive enough for management's tastes. After a below-par performance from Petrov in LCM Dragons, Sutil has resumed his usual place in the team.

    Selection stats are therefore:

    2 (5) - Senna/Kobayashi/Sutil/Kubica/Hamilton

    1 (10) - Massa/de la Rosa/di Grassi/Trulli/Chandhok/Glock/Webber/Vettel/Rosberg/Liuzzi

    Hello/cheerio

    #sidepodspace

The shuttle is due to launch in just under 3 hours time and everything is going according to plan. NASA TV www.nasa.gov/ntv is live and will be there until well after the launch. Weather is as usual the only obvious possible concern a this time but is 70% green and generally that is enough to almost guarantee a launch.

I won't be back online until about an hour before the launch. So I will see you all then.

NASA have decided the stray ball bearing is not an issue even though there is no ball bearing missing from where they said it came from!!!

It is from a mount for astronauts cameras (hypothetically and therefore shouldn't cause any issue

It is from a mount for astronauts cameras (hypothetically and therefore shouldn't cause any issue

So they took something apart, put it back together and there were parts left over? That's most blokes isn't it?

Okayy well I'll see you folks later xx

So they took something apart, put it back together and there were parts left over? That's most blokes isn't it?

They found a stray ball bearing in the payload bay. The payload bay has been closed for ages so they have been trying to figure out where it came from. I assume whoever found it originally figured if he left it in the payload bay then they would have it in space with them if they needed it.

  • Steven Roy14/05/2010 at 18:32

How long does it take for the tank to fall back down and how do they control where it goes?

It is parachuted to ground without any control. I don't know the time but it must take a while from that height. There is a ship in the area where it is due to drop and an area of ocean is cleared of all shipping. Same for the SRBs

I have the laptop. She only uses it plugged into AC Power at a desk, next to a wireless printer that never works.

Seriously folks, when my nieces came to stay my sister in law gives me the 10-year old camera that I gave my niece last year as a pressie and says 'Empty it.' Even though I gave them the cable and the software they never thought to do it at their house.

Cue half an hour of faffing about because naturally it doesn't work on Windows 7, so I had to copy the CD to a memory stick and install the software on my netbook. Pointless!

Some people are just convinced that technology is difficult. It took me ten years to convince my mother that you didn's need 5 years of specialist training to browse the net and send e-mails. Eventually I bought her a laptop and told her to play solitaire to get used to the mouse. I got a load of grief about how that was a waste of time and she had booked a training course. First thing she was told at the training course was play solitaire to get used to a mouse. Some times you just can't win

Reminds me of a great story - long time Apple user decides to buy his Grandmother (who has never used a computer before) a Mac. He has it shipped to her house, calls her to tell her it is on its way and that he will be over at the weekend to set it all up. The day it arrives he receives an email from her telling him she's figured it out already :)

    Legend!

  • Andy Taylor14/05/2010 at 19:31

Mine is always plugged in but it is also always on my knee.

You shouldn't always run your portable from the mains because the battery will fail faster if you do. Always discharge/charge at least monthly.

  • Steven Roy14/05/2010 at 19:32

I never use it on the battery except when I forget to plug it in. Battery life is rubbish anyway.

Probably because you've not been discharging/charging it regularly ;)

Hmm. My work laptop is an HP that lives on a dock. I had a battery fail last year and I asked them if this was a factor and they said no, even though the rest of the planet says yes.

I guess it goes without saying that I don't exactly trust IT!

It seems odd it would split straight down the middle. That has to be a manufacturing or material problem surely

tilt shift. but get this, because you can shoot video with the same camera, you can get the same effect with moving pictures too.

Eddie Irvine is worth something ridiculous in terms of millions, something I've never totally understood considering he spent most of his career under the wrath of Darth and underperforming in a gorgeous car

Eddie Irvine started with nothing and made a million playing the stock market. He was making so much money from that and racing in Japan that he turned Jordan down initially becuase he thought racing i F1 would cost him money.
