Hello! Welcome to Thursday 13th May 2010. We are only 4 days removed from the Spanish Grand Prix and they are at it again, this time around the twisty streets of Monaco. For the only time this year we get free practice on a Thursday rather than a Friday to allow the streets to be opened to the public again on the Friday.

On to the bullet points!!

  • On Tuesday evening some of the drivers took part in a charity football match, by all accounts Fernando Alonso was perhaps taking it a bit too seriously but managed to score a couple of goals. There are some more photos here and here.
  • KERS, the system they was ditched because it was apparently too costly, or the more likely reason which was that McLaren's system was just plain awesome and everyone was scared of it, is edging ever close to make a return next year. Hopefully Red Bull will have a system so Sebastian Vettel doesn't complain about that "magic button".
  • In case you have forgotten what Monaco looks like, Red Bull and Mark Webber have provided us all with a video taking us through all the twists and turns of the famous street circuit.
  • The link in the above bullet point, is for Sidepodcast's 3000th post! Whilst Christine and Mr C have tried to insist it is because of guest posts, a large portion of those come from you two so thank you for all your hard work!
  • Random fact for you all, of the top 4 teams (Mercedes, Red Bull, McLaren and Ferrari) only Michael Schumacher has yet to be on the podium. The last time he was on the podium was way back in China 2006.
  • You should all be used to Doctor who being part of my dailys by now, and this week I have for you Karen Gillan interviewing Matt Smith and Matt Smith interviewing Karen Gillian!

All that is left is to wish you all a good day, and I shall see you in the comments!

What I want to know is how Rob managed to talk Felipe through the 90 minutes

"Felipe, you're much faster on the left wing than Rosberg"

  • Bassano12/05/2010 at 23:16

    how's bassano this thursday?

    Very impressed. Kudos

  • Alison12/05/2010 at 23:20

My computer has loaded with a temporary profile. This sounds very worrying to me! I'll restart it and pray. All these issues really sound like I need a new one though :( Bye bye savings..

How convenient, does Nick know the rule: the further away you are from your girlfriend, the better the present has to be?

  • Alison12/05/2010 at 23:26

good to hear. i love 'em so, so much.

everybody's efforts are much appreciated, both daily's and guest posts generally. the homepage revamp really is a testament to what happens when the pressure to keep doing stuff is lifted.

Potentially the only FP sessions I'll watch (retrospectively) all year. Might not be a great race but I do love Monaco.

    It's true

I'm hoping for lots of slo-mo

  • Bassano12/05/2010 at 23:46

I'm guessing there's a huge potential to have a new Monaco winner this year. Both driver & team

  • Bassano12/05/2010 at 23:47

I'm guessing there's a huge potential to have a new Monaco winner this year. Both driver & team

Also, who's going to crash into Sutil this year?

  • me12/05/2010 at 23:48

I'm guessing there's a huge potential to have a new Monaco winner this year. Both driver & team

red bulls must be too fragile to make it to the end?

  • Alison12/05/2010 at 23:48

Also, who's going to crash into Sutil this year?

    Webber

  • Bassano12/05/2010 at 23:49

red bulls must be too fragile to make it to the end?

Half the paddock's brakes must be under scrutiny

I wonder if they've asked for them to be uprated, is it Brembo?

  • Bassano12/05/2010 at 23:51

I don't think so, unless the FI is being lapped

Then again, high downforce tracks aren't their forte

    I'm gonna say Petrov

  • Alison12/05/2010 at 23:51

red bulls must be too fragile to make it to the end?

Vettel was rrrubbish here last year. Slow and then he binned it. I can't see them winning.

  • me12/05/2010 at 23:53

Half the paddock's brakes must be under scrutiny

I wonder if they've asked for them to be uprated, is it Brembo?

it's a positioning problem. newey has moved them to the optimum place for weight distribution, not the optimum position for stopping.

  • Bassano12/05/2010 at 23:53

Vettel was rrrubbish here last year. Slow and then he binned it. I can't see them winning.

Ted's piece on the RBR exhaust system was very interesting. I'm waiting for Scarb's efforts

  • Pat W12/05/2010 at 23:53

I'm guessing there's a huge potential to have a new Monaco winner this year. Both driver & team

I reckon it'll be Button or Hamilton.

  • me12/05/2010 at 23:53

Ted's piece on the RBR exhaust system was very interesting. I'm waiting for Scarb's efforts

true, and scarbs piece on the ferrari engine was ace.

  • me12/05/2010 at 23:54

I reckon it'll be Button or Hamilton.

gotta be lewis. he crashed his car there and still won, didn't he?

  • Bassano12/05/2010 at 23:54

it's a positioning problem. newey has moved them to the optimum place for weight distribution, not the optimum position for stopping.

Interesting, I assumed it was a disc rather than pad issue

  • Pat W12/05/2010 at 23:55

gotta be lewis. he crashed his car there and still won, didn't he?

We'll see if he kills his tyres

  • me12/05/2010 at 23:55

Interesting, I assumed it was a disc rather than pad issue

    callipers i think. 1 sec.

  • Bassano12/05/2010 at 23:55

true, and scarbs piece on the ferrari engine was ace.

    That's on my list

Am having to find an RSS reader that I like

Don't know why I haven't sorted Google Reader yet, I guess that's next

  • Alison12/05/2010 at 23:55

gotta be lewis. he crashed his car there and still won, didn't he?

    Haha really? Rock on.

  • Alison12/05/2010 at 23:56

We'll see if he kills his tyres

That puncture wasn't his fault though was it?

  • Bassano12/05/2010 at 23:56

We'll see if he kills his tyres

I think the Tyres are built to last this year, no competition for ultimate stickiness

  • me12/05/2010 at 23:57

    callipers i think. 1 sec.

all assumption on my part of course: http://www.f1technical.net/development/281

It is a particular achievement that Red Bull managed to design its brake system like this, at a time when the brake system will be pushed harder than ever.

  • Pat W12/05/2010 at 23:58

I think the Tyres are built to last this year, no competition for ultimate stickiness

He's still using them more than Bunsen and Monaco is supersoft territory

  • Alison12/05/2010 at 23:59

Someone's race is bound to get destroyed by a pit-stop maff up as well.

  • Alison12/05/2010 at 23:59

He's still using them more than Bunsen and Monaco is supersoft territory

What difference does it make? If you're in front, how are they going to get past...?

  • Pat W13/05/2010 at 00:00

Someone's race is bound to get destroyed by a pit-stop maff up as well.

Ooh true enough, short and narrow pitlane even though it is bigger than it was

  • Bassano13/05/2010 at 00:00

all assumption on my part of course: http://www.f1t...l.net/development/281

Interesting, It doesn't seem like a cooling issue though unless there's extreme brake fade

  • Pat W13/05/2010 at 00:00

What difference does it make? If you're in front, how are they going to get past...?

Tyres gone, slide on to marbles into wall.

  • me13/05/2010 at 00:00

He's still using them more than Bunsen and Monaco is supersoft territory

who doesn't use their tyres more than JB though?

  • Bassano13/05/2010 at 00:00

What difference does it make? If you're in front, how are they going to get past...?

    On blown tyres, it'll happen

  • Pat W13/05/2010 at 00:01

Just thinking, maybe Alonso is a good tip

  • Bassano13/05/2010 at 00:01

who doesn't use their tyres more than JB though?

Monaco will be all about qualy though

  • Bassano13/05/2010 at 00:02

Just thinking, maybe Alonso is a good tip

Is that a thumbs up? ;)

  • me13/05/2010 at 00:03

Just thinking, maybe Alonso is a good tip

Is that a thumbs up? ;)

    :)

  • me13/05/2010 at 00:03

Monaco will be all about qualy though

that's true for every monaco gp.

that's also true for every race this season.

  • Alison13/05/2010 at 00:06

    On blown tyres, it'll happen

But what about all those classic GP clips where the car is all over the back of the other one. He just couldn't get past at all....

The only driver I can really imagine pulling off an overtake is Lewis, and I guess he doesn't have to worry about that....

  • Pat W13/05/2010 at 00:07

Is that a thumbs up? ;)

    heheh

  • Bassano13/05/2010 at 00:12

You what??? A MONTH??? I thought it was a series of 2 day strikes? Obviously I need to pay more attention. That's ridiculous. I want to fly, that's going to push the prices through the ceiling....

They say they are going to strike for a ridiculous amount of tie and it coincides with all sorts of holidays. It's moronic

I haven't decided yet but I'm no doubt start at B.A. And move from there once or twice. Internal flights will help

I think they're the only group in the company that have a guaranteed pay rise after this year's freeze

[Engineering wages haven't changed since 2008, we're happy to have jobs]

  • Bassano13/05/2010 at 00:44

They still think they are effectively civil servants where business conditions play no part in their thoughts

Who would have thought we were privatised almost 30 years ago

  • Alison13/05/2010 at 00:46

I think they're the only group in the company that have a guaranteed pay rise after this year's freeze

[Engineering wages haven't changed since 2008, we're happy to have jobs]

It's pathetic. Don't they understand, striking over staffing levels just damages your company. Passengers then feel you can't be trusted to even run planes and use someone else so you then need even less staff..... It's just moronic thinking. I don't see that cutting staffing because you're not busy is something to be striking over. It's just life surely....

  • guille230613/05/2010 at 00:48

I haven't decided yet but I'm no doubt start at B.A. And move from there once or twice. Internal flights will help

October is the beginning of spring, it tends to be rainy in some places. Here in Bariloche it will certainly be raining. On the other hand, it won't be too hot yet (Bs.As. in January is the hell). Is a bit of an unstable month, in general.

  • Bassano13/05/2010 at 00:49

It's pathetic. Don't they understand, striking over staffing levels just damages your company. 2 things

Gatwick crews have had this manning level for years

The ones with the most to lose [i.e. Work harder] happen to be union reps

I'll be quiet now but I'll just say that I used to be a Shop Steward and I've now resigned from the Union. I'm not alone

About the internal flights: you will find it as soon as you try to make a trip plan, but there are very few internal routes outside the BsAs. bound flights. Argentina has a very capital-centric air travel industry, so you have to go back to BsAs for almost every internal trip.

An example: if I wanted to go to Usuahia from Bariloche I would need to flight to BsAs. (1500km NW) and then flight back from there (more than 2500km S)

We have very good long distance bus services, though... ;-)

oh, don't worry. this is really the top of the line in bus service. I've never heard of this level of comfort in any other place in the world.

it starts at the 'semicama' level (half-bed), with seats that recline much more than the first class Eurostar and that are much more padded, up to the 'super-cama' service at some routes, with seats that go full down and turn into a bed. and if the company is good, onboard service is excellent

I regularly do 20hs trips back home for holidays...

  • Alison13/05/2010 at 01:05

The guy next to me was so hungry he bought chicken feet in a bag. Feet! Not drumsticks

    Hahaha

The indian man was really creepy though. He was fine until we all got woken up at Heathrow. After that we had a bit of polite traveller chat about where you were from/going etc which was fine. I then get my book out which clearly means conversation = over!! But nooooooo, he then spends the next hour into London asking if he can take photos of the two of us together.... I thought it was finished and he pipes up again with "oh come on, why not...." It was really quite worrying! I proper pegged it off the bus when it stopped....

Coffee man hadn't said a word to me before the trolley arrived. He was very insistant. I was quite tempted to take the coffee and drop it on him. I'm not sure that would have been helpful though.

THe only reason I spent 25 hours on a train was because Ukraine was bankrupt and had very little oil so no-one would fly in for fear that there would be no fuel and their plane would be stuck there.

Flying really hurts my ears. I'm not a fan at all. I've only been on a plane 7 times and I like to avoid it wherever possible! I think flying short distances is plain silly.... Also I'm 2 hours from an airport so it's never really all that convenient....

and people seem to keep falling out around him

  • Journeyer13/05/2010 at 07:17

I love the current top 5. If anyone of them wins the WDC I'll be happy, though I remain in Seb V's corner.

Agreed. For me, it's still a toss-up between Vettel and Alonso, with Button not far behind...

  • Journeyer13/05/2010 at 07:17

and people seem to keep falling out around him

Button not so much, but like Rosberg, it's his consistency throughout a race rather than outright speed that's getting him the good results.

  • paul13/05/2010 at 07:20

Button not so much, but like Rosberg, it's his consistency throughout a race rather than outright speed that's getting him the good results.

seems to be the theme for this year. I wonder if Nico could win a WDC like his father did

  • Journeyer13/05/2010 at 07:31

seems to be the theme for this year. I wonder if Nico could win a WDC like his father did

Spain says no - unless he can figure out how to beat Schumacher with a car more to Schumi's liking than his.

And he's not the only man at that game - so is Button.

  • MarileneRiddle13/05/2010 at 07:33

seems to be the theme for this year. I wonder if Nico could win a WDC like his father did

I do hope so, though I don't think it'll be soon. But then, he is still young.

And he's not the only man at that game - so is Button.

And Button seems to be better at it. More experience, perhaps, and in a better car.

    For all you LOST lovers:

Evangeline Lilly is 'homeless and unemployed'.

The actress admits she has found herself at a loss since filming her final scenes for US TV drama series 'Lost' in Hawaii but has only just realised the extent of her situation.

She said: 'I did live in Hawaii and now I am essentially homeless. I'm a gypsy a bit, living out of my suitcase, and I'm unemployed.

In a world where the economy could falter at any moment... one man stands tall in an empty plot of land...

"I'll take out a loan and I'll choose where to go"

*cue lots of different places around the world being shown*

"We can have trees and plants and rides and shops and toilets!"

*cue mirage of happy families and queues and people being sick from neauseous rollercoaters*

"What are you trying to say, Bob?"

    *zoom into Bob's face*

"I'm going to do it... I'm going to become a Rollercoaster Tycoon"

    Coming Soon...

Indeed. It sounded like Lewis was already complaining of something, then it just happened. The key difference is that Lewis managed to catch it somehow and avoid the spectacular crash Heikki had - which is surprising, because I remember from Heikki's case that he said the car couldn't be steered once he lost that front left.

I'm copying stock totals into the overall valuation sheet then checking some invoices, or my soul is slipping inevitably into a vacuum of tedium, whichever happens sooner.

The information about the Steinmetz promotion which is on the Mclaren website says they are using the diamond encrusted steering wheels in the race and says this about the helmets:

On Wednesday, both drivers will also reveal traditional commemorative crash helmets, which also feature the Steinmetz world championship diamond crest. These display-edition helmets will be available for photography in the Monaco paddock throughout the weekend

That reads to me as if they won't be wearing the helmets as they are for display purposes but I may have misunderstood.

  • Jon Waldock13/05/2010 at 14:31

That's tiny money for an F1 team though. Think about how much damage they do to those cars every week. They probably spend about that on a flight between GPs

  • Jon Waldock13/05/2010 at 14:35

No but they get through 5-10 a season which is still alot of money.

all this will do is help my brother reach our "fair usage limit" a lot faster :D

I just got shocking pink which is OK in some scenarios but not this one. Have updated to calm, restful, blue.

Woohoo, we are going for calm blue on our assignment website thingy :)

Why would the doohickey be in shocking pink when the rest of the site is in a nice greyscale?

    how brilliant is this? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rV6wRZRDci0

If it really is a relatively low cost modification, why is the F-duct to be banned next year?

Safety concerns too, I think. They don't want the driver doing too much in the cockpit.

It is never OK for a colour scheme on a website, but I had a pink birthday party this year and one of my friends wore her shocking pink slippers http://tweetphoto.com/22243938

Speaking of which, I wonder if the new Silverstone configuration will get the Monza/old Hockenheim low-downforce treatment, or if it'll just be like old Silverstone in terms of setup.

same problem with vettel's brakes. those super fast pit stops no longer looking so super.

What I do wonder is that not only were tyre-only stops faster in the pre-refuelling days, but I don't recall this being an issue, except maybe for that embarrassing episode with Mansell in the pitlane in Portugal 1991. But other than that, not much I can recall...

Definitely, there are several websites who will buy an old phone from you. If you look here http://www.compareandrecycle.com they can show the best deal you can get. It depends on how old your handset is.

I was thinking about getting something for Spa

If they are Network locked then I probably wouldn't

I looked at those. Aren't they crazy expensive though?? Considering the pitiful bandwidth available.

  • Bassano13/05/2010 at 18:26

Everything I've tried has failed to yield a decent price

I think if it's unlocked, ebay is probably more lucrative

    Or maybe not, it seems

  • Jon Waldock13/05/2010 at 18:26

Definitely, there are several websites who will buy an old phone from you. If you look here http://www.compareandrecycle.com they can show the best deal you can get. It depends on how old your handset is.

£10.50 is the best....bad times. Not worth it!

  • Alison13/05/2010 at 18:27

    Or maybe not, it seems

I looked but it just seemed like a load of hassle. I've been offered just under £50 for mine plus I've got some cashback on it. Better than nothing.

  • Bassano13/05/2010 at 18:29

£50 for the unit and PAYG from £9.50 [that's for 1Gb]

Sounds reasonable, what are you thinking of getting?

  • Alison13/05/2010 at 18:30

£50 for the unit and PAYG from £9.50 [that's for 1Gb]

I guess I just find it hard to think of that on a scale of regular internet.... £9.50 is what I'd pay for unlimited bandwidth for a month.

  • Bassano13/05/2010 at 18:31

I guess I just find it hard to think of that on a scale of regular internet.... £9.50 is what I'd pay for unlimited bandwidth for a month.

Yeah I guess. Would it be usable abroad though? Surely not. I disregarded MIFI really but I spent a while looking at dongles to cover a bit of non-internetness when moving so Nick didn't kill me. I think the cost is obscene though.

I'd buy a local SIM, unlocked units are available. Not sure how cheap they are or if activation would be an issue

FP1 was dull apart from Chanhok putting his car backward into the barrier at Massanet and Kobayshi experimenting with pointing his car straight at the barrier at the swimming pool and launching it off the new high kerb. Barrier 1 car front end 0.

Less obviously, the strangely named Maggotts Curve is supposedly named after the local Maggotts Moor although the only reference I can find to a moor of that name lies in Bedfordshire, some 100 kilometres away and on the opposite side of the circuit.

Unlikely they would name it after something 60 miles away unless the owner of that place was involved in the organisation but then you would expect to be able to find an explanation in that case

am wondering if it's worth getting lukeh to make a website for me.. just cause.. well.. if he's not going to be talking to me and coding instead he may as well do something useful :P

You are going to need a professional looking site for you photos and I am sure Lukeh and his SPC tutor are just the people to do it

  • lou13/05/2010 at 21:09

hehe! exactly.. plus well.. he finishes uni in a few weeks i'm sure he'll miss coding.. it would be inconsiderate of me not to ask him.

i like that i can discuss this kinda thing in the comments and then ask Lukeh later and he'll have no idea cause he doesn't read back through the comments much :D

  • lou13/05/2010 at 21:25

It's acceptable to trade making a website for baking him some cookies or something.

no it doesn't, learning to code makes him miserable.

    how in the world?

it was something along the lines of 'it's just as well i couldn't give a flying felipe about what she thinks of me then i suppose.'

to put into context i had been told how someone in my class (who i hardly know) doesn't think wanting to become an f1 photographer is a sensible career and how being a girl and liking motorsports is ridiculous.

Not sure. I think those are normal 100cc non-gearbox karts but with bodywork /aero on them.

Superkarts do 150mph. Imagine 155 mph on a kart with no suspension. The guys who drive those must be loopy and have no teeth
