Hello there, Gavin here, also known as the F1 stats blogger for ‘Making Up The Numbers’. It’s the day before Free Practice for Monaco so there’s plenty to look forward to!
- Some F1 news first. Nick Fry has decided to take inspiration from McLaren’s comeback last year and reckons Mercedes can still win the championship. He says: “The performance of McLaren last year from a miserable performance to great performances at the end shows what can be done if you have the resources to do it”. Quite.
- It has been confirmed that Hamilton’s dramatic retirement from the Spanish Grand Prix was caused by a faulty wheel rim. As it happens, Christine has written an excellent discussion thread for you on the topic. Spookily, it’s the same corner of the car that failed at the same Grand Prix in 2008 for Heikki Kovalainen. Now we know what failed, can we please be told why?
- In other F1 news, the kerbs have been raised at Monaco, Ferrari are investigating why the car does not suit Massa and everybody wants Bridgestone to stay in F1 next year. Except I’d like Kumho to be the tyre supplier, so I can regularly shout out ‘RELEASE THE KUMHOOOOO!’ - although, I don't think they make a giant mythical sea monster...
- Finally, here’s something a little different for you. As a Data Analyst, my goal is to make the information given to me as accessible as I can visually. Therefore I love to read blogs such as David McCandless’s ‘Information is Beautiful’ blog – check out the latest Infographical Morsels he has posted. Lovely.
That’s all from me – sorry if it’s a little short, but I’m a bit tired after going for a run through the park tonight (it’s the first time I have run since I moved house and I really enjoyed it).
Have a great day and see you in the comments!
Another day, another awesome daily and a lot of awesome links to read!
Midnight sneaked up on me. I like that infographic thing..

despite all the players having gone to bed... :)
Night guys!

Everything is on target for the shuttle launch and it works in very neatly for F1 fans. Thursday we have FP1/FP2 at Monaco, Friday we have the shuttle launch and then Saturday and Sunday we have F1. That is just so neat it has to get screwed up by weather or a volcano. I have a feeling the same thing was supposed to happen last year or the year before. Maybe my memory is playing tricks on me. Will check later.
Anyway the launch should happen at 2:20pm Eastern or 7:20pm UK.
http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/shuttle/main/index.html
7.20 is perfect :)
I would bet it ends up launching during the race or something just to be awkward
Errrrm I've just signed into my fantasy racers team. I think it's broken. For some reason I have Michael Shumacher in my team.....
My team looks fine. Well as fine as such a useless team can look
But but but. Well what do I do. My Scottish flag is gone. My favourite German has been replaced by another, less favourable one. I swear I'm not mad! You remember my team that's named after my car....
Just noticed Webber is worth more than Vettel
Does anyone know your password?
Maybe it got confused and logged you into the wrong account.. Email Danny.
But I'm not even allowed to change the drivers. Nobody does know my password but even if they did.....
At the bottom of the Help & Information menu there is a Contact us option. Tell Danny what happened because others may be affected.
I signed out and in again. All is well again! Phew! I knew I couldn't have chosen Michael Shumacher....
Even so tell Danny what happened because if it happened to you it can happen to others
Okay I'll send an email. I'm just so relieved. I thought I'd got drunk and thought it'd be super funny to mess with my fantasy racers team of all things....
I was more woried about the flag.
:D
I'm not actually doing badly. I'm doomed to be forever behind Bassano though. He has the same team as me but for some reason the computer has decided he's doing better than me!!
yteam has been rubbish. I keep picking drivers who do really well then a wheel breaks or they find some other way not to score the result they should
Ah yes. I'd be doing a lot better minus dodgy wheels too!!
Hi all. How is practice tomorrow already? Where is my life going?
Practise is Thursday. It is still Tuesday
Technically it is Wednesday, but I think the clock is lying.
Until I go to bed it is Tuesday or I will get really confused
I agree!
I'm writing another blogpost or I'd have gone to bed already.
I knew there was a space shuttle landing during the Monaco weekend last year as well. It was the Hubble mission. Can't believe that was a year ago already
http://sidepodcast.com/2009/05/22/daily-22nd-may-2009/comments/#comment-311287
If its not Wednesday why am I at work?
You must work more than one day a week
Good point.
Eurgh!! I can't possibly sleep now, I'm to angry!!!! GRRRRRRRR
I wish I'd gone to bed 5 minutes ago and had dreams about marshmallow angels...
What's Nick done now?
I'm too annoyed to even explain coherently! Is it unfair to be angry if people were inconsiderate because they were drunk?
You seem angry a lot. It can't be good for your blood pressure.
I am the wrong person to ask about that because I have no tolerance whatever to people saying they only did it because they were drunk. If they can't behave when they are drunk they whouldn't get drunk.
shouldn't not whouldn't
Scottish women are all like that
I'll leave you to it, goodnight :)
Night Pat :)
I'm less angry now. I think it all boiled off. Phew. I will settle at annoyed.
Night
:D
Settle for making his life miserable when he is hungover
He already has to get up and go to work. I'm too lazy to wake up early enough to get him up earlier and shout at him.... Something about noses and face springs to mind
Omagine how bad he is going to feel after a day at work with a hangover and by then you will be wide awake
:D You're a lot more mean than I am. Sadly I too must go to work.
I am not mean at all. I just identify opportunities
Speaking of Scotland, I now know that my great great great grandad Andrew was from Kilbirnie. I wonder if there are any Fultons left there 140 years after he left for New Zealand.
Noooo that's mean! If I wanted to be mean, I'd send him an angry message now and let him stew all day.
I grew up in Kilbirnie and there was a Fulton in my class from my first day at primary school
You don't really understand men do you?
ooh thats quite creepy!
It's the sidepodcast effect
I think that's unfair!
If he is hungover he is not going to spend all day stewing about a message. Men in pain are interested in now and when can I go to bed and don't think about much else
I also learned my great great great grandmothers maiden name was Humphrey. Clearly this means I am related to Jake.
Would you believe there was one of those in my primary school class as well?
Ooh! I am not sure if she was from there, I don't even know if she was Scottish. The lady who did our family tree seemed to only care about the men, not their wives.
With a name like that her roots are either in Scotland or Ireland
I guess it's much harder to keep track of the women though because their family names change every generation.
Annoyingly he doesn't really get hungover. It's me that feels sick and wants to curl up in a ball.
That is so annoying. Having all the fun with none of the pain
It's fine, he gets tired and grumpy. Being sleepy doesn't affect me at all.
Amy,
Did you know there is a Kilbirnie in NZ?
Indeed, its a suburb of wellington I believe
You think you're secretly from NZ? Maybe that's why you can't make sidepodscotland :P
I have no idea where it is it is just something we were always told as kids
:D
if anyone's still around, have made a quick update to the homepage. it's not finished (and it's taking quite a bit longer than planned), but it is coming together at last.
Will check
Very nice. Is it just me or is Heikki a bit blurry?
christine's working through some photoshop tutorials, heikki was today's "still life" :)
Have you thought about copying the darker box from the Daily Discussion header and using that sam colour for Subscribe for Free and Current F1 Standings?
That would explain it
I like the big kerb logo on all the posts.
mm, have been round in circles on that one. the sidebar has taken two evenings so far, and it doesn't look it in the slightest.
the problem is there's a danger of things become too "boxy". think i might move on to something else for a week and come back to it with a fresh perspective.
hopefully, they'll be category relevant where possible. so we'll take a piccy of the cog for "technical" posts etc. quite nice just as is though, i agree.
Anything like this is going to take way longer than you would think.
I was just thinking that the Daily Discussion stands out but then maybe that isn't a bad thing. All the header boxes in the main column are the same colour so I thought it whould be the same on the side column
Can never have enough cogs
this was the best design, i think: http://twitpic.com/1n24jq
couldn't get it to work with the overall page, but will come back to it.
I like that.
yay :)
the lines and boxes started getting weird with so many things jutting out, more work required.
Heikki on the home page? I must go look!
hehe
another awesome guest post ping: http://sidepodcast.com/2010/05/12/the-power-of-momentum/
Morning.
I lived in a suburb called Kilbirnie in Wellington for a few years ;)
wow mr c - you do sleep, right?
I think he did, once.
That should be an unbelievable coincidence but for here it is quite normal. There is another Kilbirnie in Australia so I wonder who lives/lived there.
http://www.multimap.com/world/AU/Queensland/Kilbirnie
Morning all. I thought I had a dentist appointment today but it is not until next week. My life is so rock and roll.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kilbirnie,_New_Zealand
Named after your town, sir ;)
Is it at 2:30 (tooth-hurty)?
You know jokes aren't as funny if you have to explain them? :)
It's even worse telling that one to a Danish dentist!
Alonso with some mad facials: http://sweetf1.blogspot.com/2010/05/alonso-facials.html
Arrrrgh, Le Mans cars. Not only do they have three drivers but they've got a stoopid roof so I can't tell who is in the car in pictures.
If it's being driven awesomely, it's Franck, otherwise it's not him.
In fairness, you have a 70% chance of getting a pic of him because that's how much of the race he drove...
Good point.
Morning!
Last night on Scrubs I realised in an episode there was a doctor called Doctor Donna :) It made me laugh so much...
Oooh!
The character said "You call call me Doctor Donna!" and I went 'Woo!' out loud... I swear, I'm not obsessed with Dr Who.
I'm just taking an interest :)
Also, you may like this Christine as well. I don't understand all of them as I don't watch the show but someone has made the Lost games of Lost :)

Hehehe!
morning folks
James Allen's latest header image burns the eyeballs to a new level: http://www.jamesallenonf1.com/wp-content/uploads/monacoban1b.jpg
Hiya leigh. Hows things?
Yikes. I do like the idea though, but it is a bit mental...
he's had worse though.
morning btw :)
Morning.
Goodness!
Morning James, how goes it?
not too bad lukeh; not too bad - a bit of a busy week ahead
going to do my monaco prep later on as i will be busaaaay tomorrow night - i can't wait
...plus, initial ibndy500 runs this weekend
:D
oooh its Wednesday! I'm all caught up and can actually watch Lost when I'm meant to! I would have forgotten again, I'm sure :D
You'll be ahead of us for a change!
I long for the days where I can wake up and there not be an assignment I need to do. heh :) yourself?
it's a whole new terrifying world.
I know how that feels.... 2 more weeks!
I kind of miss those days because it meant I got 26 weeks holiday per year.
hehe same! my birthday is the day after i finish!! :D
What an awesome finishing present :)
Oooh, a sense a big ol' celebration!
Yeah. Student life was easy!
I just stumped my wife by forwarding a question by email and saying "Answers on a postcard please" :(
Morning all,
Why do the Doctors get booked up so early?! It only opened 90 minutes ago and I can't get an appointment :( My throat is on fire! owwww
How are we all?
Does anyone know how I can get to watch parts of the annual F1 football match? This year's sounded quite exciting.
In better shape than you apparently. Try tea with honey, see if it helps?
I am sooo mad the ones in both Spa and Monza are before I arrive in the respective towns :(
I have neither, this may be an issue....
which i will probably spend sleeping :D
I wouldn't mind knowing too, Alonso scored an awesome goal apparently!
I go to the Jonsi gig and the Crystal Palace motorsport thing just after I finish and Goodwood is a week after I get told if I've graduated or not, so hopefully both will be celebrations :)
Felipe is terribly amusing:
'I play as a forward, because you are nearer the goal like that, which means it's a bit like starting a race from the front row of the grid!' (on is his role during the Monaco football match)
I heard that too. A great volley it seems. I always knew Spaniards were the best at the game. #worldcupspoilers
Can't say I ever heard Alan Shearer describe himself the same way
I think you'll find these guys will win it.
I fail to type that without laughing.
It still blows my mind they are the All Whites in football when NZ are so well known as the All Blacks in rugby :)
Hmm Football and Motorsport mixing together - what a great idea ;)
Which world cup are you referring to? I mean the one that actually matters you know. :P
the All Whites only play one sport :D
The basketball team are the Tall Blacks :D
Apparently quite a few of the drivers had 'being a professional football player' on their minds
http://www.formula1.com/news/features/2004/6/1699.html
Ops. My bad. ;)
You should see the names of the NZ national teams:
All Blacks
All Whites
Black Caps
Silver Ferns
Black Sox
Black Sticks
Tall Blacks
Lady Blacks
Kiwis
and my personal favourite... is the badminton team
The Black C...s (really!)
:O
I like how Ralf has no idea. That's our Ralfy!
Nelson Piquet Sr was a ranked tennis player, before he was an F1 driver.
True story!!
oooh I found a review of the match. http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/sport/tomcary/100008090/formula-one-drivers-4-2-monaco-all-stars/
Fernando, Nico and Jaime were the stars, though Petrov improved after being moved to the front.
Here's the highered up kerbs
http://www.sutton-images.com/previews/dcd1011my110.jpg
Cloudy monaco is cloudy
Panis would be a lawyer. Yea, you know what, if I can't drive at exhilirating speeds and compete with the best in the world... I'll sit behind a desk and read books.
Alguersuari – the so-called ‘Most Dangerous Man in F1′ (a Daily Mail headline last year)
Oh Daily Mail...
Oh, I forgot the Ice Blacks and the Wheel Blacks.
It's either Colour+(Fern/sporting object) or All+(Colour of strip)
YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH!
*ahem*
EEEEK.
Actually being a lawyer ain't that bad. Plus you get to be annoying and get away with it.
Di Grassi – Pretty anonymous. Or at least I didn’t write down anything he did. 5/10
Who is this Tom Carey fella? Clearly has no idea. ;)
So did Baumgartner become a pilot in the end? He's certainly not racing
I'm sure it is very interesting, but it's about the complete opposite of racing in F1 I can think of.
The ones I know sit in our meetings and hard negotiate with our suppliers. They are Tigers!
He doesn't need to do anything. He just needs to be there.
Di Grassi - I have no idea what he did and I didn't take much notice of the silly game but he was definitely delicious. 10/10
I'm guessing if someone else was writing, that would have been the line? ;)
Exactly! I need pictures.
Perfect.
I love this bit though
:D
I am sure being a librarian is worse. At least some lawyers get paid the same as F1 drivers.
http://www.autosport.com/gallery/photo.php/id/13250638
I hope Sauber aren't leaving their motorhome like that
Budgets are tight this year!
Also, Moral Rob is going to be everywhere in Monaco

Also, the F1 Transporter Grand Prix of Monaco is go go go :D

What happened to the giant Campari lady?
This explains it :P
More on the match. http://adamcooperf1.com/2010/05/12/goal-hero-alonso-the-star-as-f1-drivers-win-monaco-football-match/
No pics of di-licious though.
Hello.
Hi!
I'm trying to think of England's but I can only come up with Three Lions.
He's still employed by Stoddart and he drives the Minardi F1x2
Ted News
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/8674691.stm
Seems his tweet about the exhausts was in relation to why they're so fast
Also it seems Seb was indeed going to retire at one point:
Vettel revealed afterwards that they called him in to retire on safety grounds, reasoning that they couldn't let Seb continue knowing he had a brake problem that could see him suffer a nasty accident.
But by electing to stay out and go for whatever points could be gained, Vettel effectively relieved the team of their responsibility and took the risk into his own hands. Brave.
:D
For those who are more technical than me, can you verify if there may be any truth in this? Sounds quite true.
http://tnp.sg/sports/story/0,4136,239898,00.html
That will also mean that it is the car, not Seb, who is incapable of overtaking. :P
Sorry, that's why he's paid millions - to try and stay out until the car breaks down.
This should be expected of all Grand Prix drivers IMO.
Depends. If the threat is only to himself, fine. If the car may crash into anyone else by being out of control, I would rather the driver retire.
I hate sporting accidents. :(
So do I - I'm not implying he be reckless or endanger others. But his gentle easing of the car to the flag was just what he should have done.
It's quite staggering that he could slow himself down for corners at the end of the race by simply getting off the throttle - you could hear him not braking that hard (if at all on some corners) but merely waiting for the car to slow down I assume from all the downforce he had...
I heard somewhere the aero drag is worth 1G in terms of deceleration?
I have no idea, the complicated side of F1 goes straight through my little confused mind :)
Moral Rob knows...
BBC Weather is still saying heavy rain for practise tomorrow
It's raining bucketloads here today!
Looking at the BBC map, all of Denmark is blue so I can see why :)
Sounds about right!
I think heavy rain is predicted for the whole weekend.
:S for driver safety
:D for race action
Someone I'm sure will correct me but it must have been about 1996 when there was a wet Monaco GP and 4 people finished
Catherine Weathergirl Hyde says "Looks like another day of rain mixed with a clouds and the occasional bit of sunshine..."
yay
Only 3 finished
See today's guest post too while you're at it
;)
Don't send it this way please :)
Ha! It was easy as a simply thread away :)
Wooooooooooooah at the homepage!!!
Don't worry, even if it does, most of it will have fallen here!
Momentum reminded of the fall of Rafa last year. Thankfully he has since recovered. #tennisfan
:D Mr. C has been hard at work.
better.
Dear Roger,
Please defend Madrid. Please please please. I'll let you not defend RG, but Madrid would be nice.
Love, Amy
:D After losing so early in Estoril? Momentum my dear.
he is king of peaking at the right time, just like he always does *consoles self*
Nevermind Federer. Heikki should comfort you.
http://twitpic.com/1n4lho
best homepage ever. #sorryfranck
I did get a bit stroppy when I had to replace Franck.
I am sure you'll be able to find some reason or other to put him back in his rightful place again.
I'll have to see if he did anything else exciting in May :)
Morning all.
Love the new homepage.
Have just been informed that my site is kaput. Seemed to be okay yesterday. Is this when I start to beat myself over the head for not backing it up?
Yes! But Google probably has it cached. I know you can always look back through old stuff on Google Reader so all is not lost.
Indeed, I still have all 45 posts in my Google Reader, only the photos are now dead links :)
Hurrah!
Trust this sort of thing to happen just when I've got no time at all to prat about restoring it.
I really did try to read the instructions about backing up the database once, but my head started to spin.
Has it been hacked, do you think, or is it the host going wonky?
Oh dear Staurt,
Super Extra Bonus Bummer
Hehe, I think you are mistaking me for my husband :)
Heh heh.
Just gone to the host's website and other people on the same server are having similar problems, so it's clearly a problem at their end. Will submit a support ticket and see what comes about (they've been very good in the past). Then I'll make a point of learning how to do backups!
mmm. Having lovely melted cheese toast. I love my new oven. :D
Any recipes that I should try out (other than those on the wiki)?
Do you have any Greggs bakeries over there? Because my guide to a good lunch is a sure fire hit ;)
http://wiki.sidepodcast.com/page/Guide+To+Getting+A+Good+Lunch
Alas no. Maybe a budget airline flight is required?
Definitely :)
KL to London on Air Asia return for $600!
If I ever go on holiday overseas, Amy is organizing it
Malaysia 2011!
oh, right!
good to know. ;)
About a minute before it has finished under the grill put a few drops of Worcestershire sauce on it
The next SPC Grand Prix meet at Sepang....?
I'll be there, whether alone or surrounded by folk :D
sounds good. I really should go shopping for groceries soon.
I'm considering going back to uni, so I've no idea where I'll be then
its only 10 months away! That's soon! ;)
Mmmmmm. Greggs...
I;m surprised you havent booked yet
Another thing to do instead is put Marmite on the toast before the cheese... but it helps if you like / can get it
I may have to do an extra course in the meantime to bring qualifications completely up to scratch - you'd think after 7 years of uni, I'd be done, but...
I would have if the F1 calendar was confirmed :D
#confidentialfrommrc
:D
That I have. :D
#andmrsc
I thought it might stress you out, but it might actually kill him.
Excellent :)
I am actually planning on making marmite soup. This after discovering I only had fizzy drinks left in my fridge. :(
I'd think Bovril would be nicer
That is true.
Something about the word Bovril is not nice.
sounds like medicine
I like it, I associate it with getting warm after being cold...
Actually not the taste so much, quite sickly, good from time to time.
I'm not sure I've ever had it. Is it like Marmite?
My family stopped buying it after the mad cow disease thing and never bothered to resume again.
A little, I guess.
Hot beef drink goodness :)
Similar consistency, a bit richer taste perhaps and not so sharp. Hard to describe..
It's basically like drinking hot gravy!
Christine, is there much work involved for you to convert my word docs to pdfs for the transcripts?
Blimey. Got a reply from their tech support within 40 mins of sending an email. All to do with a back up job going wrong, they said. Site's back up now.
Full of Vitamin B, too, apparently.
Nope.
just went to look and see what was up, and a quick refresh went from error to working page.
clearly i just needed to stare at it a while ;)
phew. Because since my concentration means I jump between them rather than just finishing one I have around 5 almost finished ones. So plan this weekend is to finish them all and send them all to you in one giant lump :D
Wow! Gooo Amy.
Cute PDF can do it, right?
Right folks,
I've covered the Monza Banks, Avus and Benguela on the circuit section for the archive and I'm lining up posts on Brooklands and Montjuïc circuit for the next couple of months.
Anyone have any circuits whose histories they would like to see dug up and written about in the future (apart from the Nordschleife of course - that's a natural)
:)
Donington, please!
Christine, is there much work involved for you to convert my word docs to pdfs for the transcripts?
Cute PDF can do it, right? {Comment #265}
So can OpenOffice.org.
I just open it up and save as pdf right in Word.
plus, you add the honda header.
I may do Donington eventually, but I want to wait how the current saga unravels before I go into it - plus Brooklands is scheduled for the British GP
:)
Oh yes, that too. The orange bits.
Aintree?
There's a bit of formatting that goes on, obviously, and I scan through quickly for stand out typos etc, but the pdf bit is simples.
There's not much happening at the track at the moment. Trust me, I just went there...
Aintree could be a good one - I might see if I could twin that with Goodwood
If there is ever a swear book for motorsports published, will Gillett be in there? It could represent a racing version of c**k-up.
(i.e. - Sorry about the crash guys, I did a bit of a Gillett)
new flatmate is helping me because after saying 'do you speak fluent French?' and getting a yes in reply I played him a few sentences of Frenchy things Joe has said and said 'how on earth do you spell that?'
Foreigners = handy.
Montjuïc. Just because I am going to go there when I'm in Barcelona.
Already half written - it being planned for posting on the Wednesday before Valencia
I totally skimmed your comment and missed the fact that it was already in your list. Whoops!
:)
About two weeks ago they announced the Sept/Oct dates they've got for BTCC and BSB are a go on the National layout.
Donington is 80 years old next year - if I remember, I could do something then
my hostel is only 1km from there so I plan on paying a visit. That is more because I want to see the Olympics venues though :D
Turkey Machine probably knows the track well from GPL...
Really? The place was a tip at Easter!
They reckoned it won't take all that much to get that part running again... it won't have the same licence it had before though, they say it needs a lot of work to even improve the existing circuit to the right standards let alone repair the damage.
BoP have been pretty good at following this all the way along.
http://www.britsonpole.com/doningtons-rebirth-moves-closer-with-confirmed-race-dates-post24223
Put that date in your diaries folks
:)
Brilliant.
They need to take this opportunity to correct the mistake of the chicane that turns the track onto the Melbourne Loop and make it a fast corner instead.
Same day as the Monza GP and the Silverstone LMS
Emma said of Spa today: "Congratulations Spa, your weather is truly random and yet fantastic. The circuit is looking good, there is still some work to be done and many of the basic facilities haven't changed, I hope Bernie is happy with it "
Anyone else hear the statement yesterday that the term "IRL" is going to be ditched permanently. Slightly unfortunate choice of words from Randy Bernard that he wanted to "blow-up the phrase", but I see what he wants to do.
Both "IRL" and "Champ Car" are chocked full of negative connotations.
Hello all, just popping in to say how much I love the homepage redesign. It looks good on my PC and awesome on my phone. I very much like the "realtime" button too :).
Scary picture from @sarahholtf1. I could not do this even if I was tethered. http://twitpic.com/1n4yxd
Yes, it is good news.
I hope the next move is to merge the stats to cover all of NA open wheel rather than IndyCar since 1995...
That does annoy me somewhat
Gosh!
Wow!!
http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20070213004733/wikiality/images/b/b5/TheSimpsonsBumbleBeeMan.jpg
yay. it's only possible thanks to christine and all the amazing guest posters, ensuring i can be ultra focussed.
i think there's still more tweaks come too, let's say it's 60% done at the moment.
It does look really really good so far though :) i heart the realtime button!
that's almost my favourite bit, but i still really like the more button. i might spend too much time clicking that.
It's awesome. Really flash!
Can I just ask why the banner at the top is a link? You're already on the homepage.
which bit do you call the banner?
Sorry, I just mean the word Sidepodcast at the top. I was compelled to click on it and it just reloaded the page :P
ahh, right. i can make it so it doesn't do anything on the homepage, no probs.
So when you are on another page you can go back to the homepage.
Just looked for the first time, I like that too :) Nice design.
And websites without that sort of banner or button are really annoying.
No, don't. Sometimes it's useful for refreshing.
righto!
I've just looked at the homepage. mind = blown.
ahhh, so Lewis is having dice on his helmet. Boring.
w00t!
why was he so excited about that?
Is that it??
Link?
*sigh*
Because it's Lewis and it seems as though he is determined to make everyone really sick of him.
Dice? Come on! If his helmet was shaped like a Die that would have rocked, but no...
Is that the best they could come up with after the diamonds?

Square-shaped head :D
I want a balloon helmet for him. Suits his airheadedness.
the diamonds are still around, they're just on the steering wheel now.
Is Jenson having a craps table then?
You keep doing it to me :D
when will the doohickey get the new header/footer comboination?
they did that for kimi, right?
it rings a bell, they've definitely done it before.
not sure. a couple of other pages need updating first. the archive page and seasons page have both been limping along for ages. lots of potential there to make them v.interesting.
that's sooo 2006. anyone fancy writing a guest post on the repetitiveness of mclaren's marketing?
ah fair enough :) i'd rather see these interesting things first before the doohickey gets the new style ;)
I was just gonna moan that they were repeating themselves.
But sorry I have no time for a guest post. In an hour I go home and I have family staying over this weekend (it's my Friday today)...
it's quite useful as a comparison for me too. i can flick between home and doohickey and make sure there's a specific improvement or compare typefaces etc.
they've done the diamonds every year since. I can remember Alonso/Hamilton having the diamonds as well.
http://www.formula1.com/news/headlines/2005/5/3016.html is the first mention of it I can find on their website. So thats 6 years and counting, at least.
"this year there are two dice and the caption ‘Dice’n in the streets’ emblazed across the rear."
So Lewis = Kimi 2005. Lame.
even the dice aren't new??
I could have sworn we'd already done that, but super search seems to be stuck.
Can't believe you're inviting readers to 'bash the Bishop'
you're right: http://sidepodcast.com/2008/05/16/have-mclarens-marketing-department-lost-their-way/
(search was okay for me)
Can't believe you're inviting readers to 'bash the Bishop' {Comment #339}
I don't think this is the Bishop's fault, but Steinmetz's. I suspect this is sponsor-imposed rather than strictly McLaren's idea..
I probably searched for the wrong thing, but I kept getting the same page over and over when I clicked next.
I tried to search for a comment the other day that I knew existed, and the super search didn't find it :( So I trawled through two weeks of daily posts instead :D
Nobody bashes the Bishop.
Finns do it first!
Agreed.
They couldn't even change the tagline. *SIGH*
"i find your dice pitch to be a disgruntlement"
this is what they've done the last few years:
2007: 'Monaco 2007' on the side of the helmets
2008: Steinmetz logo and the drivers signature on top of the helmet
2009: numbers 1 and 2, in diamonds for each driver
*is still sad they didn't put blue peter-esque glittery pasta shells on heikki's helmet last year*
If they use Penne they could probably assist with the airflow...
They'd probably find that a penne in the backside...
Penne is very aerodynamic pasta though. The tubular shape and external ridges would help direct the airflow off the driver's helmet! ;)
:)
Penne for your thoughts?
These jokes are getting pasta their best.
Shocking, just shocking........

Does anyone know anything about car tax disks. I have a new disk but my old one isn't expired yet. Do I just swap it over now anyways or do I have to wait?
You can just swap it now.
Okay good times. I didn't want to lose it :D Thanks.
I only just noticed, when did Autosport TV stop autoplaying?
I only just noticed, when did Autosport TV stop autoplaying? {Comment #360}
About 3 weeks ago, thankfully!
Fabulous. Many brownie points for them.
no-way? thank the lord!
Is the dude in the back of http://twitpic.com/1n5zbs that fan who is there every single year with the megaphone and the shiny helmet?
I didn't know there was one
ahh, he's almost always on the TV coverage at least once, and I've heard a few drivers mention him in press conferences before.
There is normally a scouser with a megaphone up there who shouts out messages to the drivers and other well known faces. I wonder where he’s been told he’s not welcome any more, or perhaps he’s been credit crunched
http://www.jamesallenonf1.com/2009/05/monaco-race-day-diary/
sometimes it would be nice if I could remember things about F1 that are actually useful.
No way. We've got Mr C to remember the boring things.
oi!
Oops. ♥
Don't stress Mr C - I remember everything!!
:D
I remember important things, like which outfit Catherine was wearing at which race.
hmmm
Fanfare please: http://smarterthanyouraverage.com/2010/05/12/life-in-the-fast-lane-ii-part-8/
you need to do viva's quiz :)
whoop whoop!
Booo for work time :( I want to stay at home!
I'll try and remember to swap my tax disk. Thanks Christine.
Here are the helmets... underwhelming as ever.
Much more interesting is the return of our favourite pair of drivers, this week they are firefighters :) :)

McLaren seem to be really loving this 'back to back' champions thing.
it's Baby Felipe Baby!!

Pamela will be happy, she has been missing Mrs Massa :D
Oooh, that's what it means. I was confused. I was sure they were car 1 and 2.
they are my new favourite couple.
sennandock?
Wow. What a Mini-Me!
afternoon
Didn't Lewis say it was going to be exciting?
I am concerned that they will sweep Christine's Rankings and no one else will get a look in.
Soooooo Cute!
Karuno.
It is not your fault they are both mega
can we take a giant HRT sign to Spa?
Lewis' version of excitement may potentially differ from ours though...
Chenna?
8.30 tonight!
Afternoon all, just wanted to share this:
Look what's just appeared on my iBook shelf. Why it's that book by @AlexAndronov http://twitpic.com/1n6g7s
I may be ferociously busy this evening, but if time opens up, I may have a gander
:)
:)
wow!
Nice
I will, provided I remember, be taking part tonight, first time since I won ;)
Not as much football distracting me tonight, I'll be there.
Hey folks.
cool, should be a big bunch tonight then. I'm planning to be there but Mum's going away for a holiday so I may be called away..
You can download the PDF from lulu.com and there's a wonderful, multi-platform, free app called calibre that converts to epub format [I added the cover pic manually]

thats how I got it on my Kindle too :D <3 calibre
Now I know how much we all think that Castrol get it oh so wrong every week but I think this week they got it quite right....

#264 Michael Schumacher
:D RALF
Hmmm… sorted an open day date for city university of London – should be an interesting look into what I get up to 2011
whatcha looking at?
journalism - you'd think after 7 years of uni i'd learned my lesson, but apparently not
ooh that sounds good
i'd originally contemplated it when i finished school, but was far too penniless (and immature) to even comprehend doing it (properly)
I think you'd be very good at that, writing is definitely your thing
when i was in uni first (doing music, sound engineering and music industry management), i always liked doing research
...and i still stand by my dissertation too.
:)
isn't journalism just about the worst long term career you can consider right now? second only maybe to coal miner.
i'm currently working in the music industry.................
hehehe. ok, nuff said :)
;)
maybe i like asking for trouble
or you like a challenge :)
today journalism, tomorrow parachuting into warzones
anyway, i'm going to head for a while - i've loads of work to do this eveninga nd may be back later on
laters sir.
obligatory daily quick php related question for mr c?
if you're v.quick, am on the road in five mins. back home about 6:45
It's not a hugely important Q but it might get a bit confusing in what im trying to do so I'm ok to wait till you return :)
catch ya in abit
byee!
I have been given the opportunity to interview Mr McNish! Exciting
#awesome
Gotta see if the date is right but it would be epic
I just saw this. Can I now say that I love the Castrol rankings no matter however inaccurate it may be? :P
I think that ^^ is quite accurate ;)
howdy
today i hate michael schumacher more than ever: http://adamcooperf1.com/2010/05/12/schumacher-slams-bbc-man-and-ducks-2006-rascassegate-questions/
When [David] Croft asked whether Michael would do the same thing again to guarantee pole (park at Rasscasse), he said: “You’re boring…”
Boo!
I had to remember what I was gonna ask now... I think it was along the lines of do you think it'd be possible with php to display a gallery of images? I think I've got it showing a random image from a folder but that's just one picture... and I have a feeling if I just copypasta that it has a chance of displaying the same random images...
oh my god!!!! I love the home page!!!!!
:)
assuming the pics are all in the same folder, yup. just loop through ever file in the folder and display in on page. is the random thing important of can they be sequential?
*waves* today i want Jenson to win the GP more than anything... he says he's going to do the run again :D
also, i could have sworn they said there wouldn't be diamonds this year?
http://www.autosport.com/gallery/photo.php/id/13250656 - they look like diamonds to me...
:o!! Schumi makes me angry.
im not advocating what he said but it was a ridiculous question
you don't think he would do it again? i think he'd do it again and do a better job. nasty people are nasty.
Exactly...
I doubt Schumi will be anywhere near pole on Saturday...
And I do love that homepage Mr C. Looks beautiful
He is just like that. Why bother getting yourself worked up over him?
im not saying he wouldnt do it again but if i keep ask you "would you cheat again to get pole" then eventually you're going to get annoyed.
should he have said "You're boring" ? No, but the question was stupid
They can just be any old file, but not repeating themselves so you dont get the same image twice
i don't care how ridiculous the question... he doesnt have to be rude in his response.
He doesn't need to be on pole to obstruct others. Heck I think he might even do it just to qualify higher then Nico. #hopeididntjinxrosberg
agreed, however imagine being asked the same question all day, eventually you're going to snap.
it's a journalists job to ask questions. i couldn't case less if it makes him annoyed, he wanted to come back to f1.
part of his job is to have a day worth of interviews.... if you can't handle it, don't do it... he can't have imagined that people would have forgotten about it... if it was going to be a problem for him then why come back?
i'm not worked up. i hate him, and continue to hate him.
I am pretty sure most people do by now. ;)
cool, so:
$fd = opendir("/foldername");
while(false !== ($file = readdir($fd)) ) {
// here $file should be your image url
}
I'm not saying they did anything wrong, I'm just saying that being asked the same question all day whoever you are is going to annoy you and eventually you're going to snap and make a comment like he did.
As I said, I'm not advocating what he said, far from it, I'm just saying it was a ridiculous question and after a while of questions like that all day, Crofty was the straw that broke the camels back etcc
seconded
i know. and i disagree with you.
It is worth saying it wasn't a straight comment, elsewhere it's been written as;
"With a wink and a smile to his interrogator, Schumacher quipped: "You're boring!"
So clearly wasn't meant seriously.
i really, really (heart) scarbs' latest post, which explains completely why ferrari only have an engine problem this year, even though it's supposed to be a homologated part.
Sometimes when excessive leaking occurs, the car is topped up at a pitstop by a mechanic with a hand held gas cylinder. In Ferraris case their problem was that their system had always ‘leaked’ to some degree, but with a ban on the longer fuel stops, pit stops are now too short for effective repressurising. Thus they applied to have their system altered.

still hate him
is it wrong i really really dislike him for ruining JB's race too?.. it's silly but i am genuinely angry about it. lol
It's a race, he didn't ruin JB's race, he just stopped him getting past, that's what you're meant to do?
as you should be. what the man did was unforgivable in my book. i'd have kicked him out of the season.
I dislike him more for ruining Nico's race. #conspiracytheorist
I don't see what your point is, of course he ruined JB's race.
I don't mean he did it on purpose I should say of course not, but because Schumi was just unpassable that ruined what JB wanted from the race, therefore it ruined his race for him. As jenson himself said, Schumacher knows exactly where to place that car to defend his position.
ah-ha, more from ted on the exhausts: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/8674691.stm
...rival engineers estimate Red Bull's exhaust solution accounts for about half their performance advantage.
i know... i wasn't saying he did the wrong thing.... just that it was annoying.. and JB seemed angry that he was 'moving around a lot on the straights' he made JB angry.. which annoyed me lol... yes i'm aware how stupid that makes me sound.
In all honesty the thought of what he did in Monaco makes me incredibly angry, which means i have a much lower tolerance level of him.
wow!
oh wait, you're angry at him for barcelona? not monaco '06?
anger doesn't sum up my feelings towards monaco 2006. he didn't ruin JB's monaco race though... JB's race wasn't great... he did hold Schumi up a bit though if i remember?
have we discussed hill being a steward? manipe has the news: http://www.manipef1.com/news/articles/10919/
Wow :)
Apparently it is the Nuburgring 24 Hours this weekend. I followed it for the first time last year because RLM covered it live, and it is insane.
This is worth a quick read, it isn't very long:
http://www.thecheckeredflag.co.uk/2010/05/2010-nurburgring-24-hours-preview/
It's during the week that I am potentially working, so it will depend on if I get work or not, if I'm not and I do that 2 week thing then I shall definitely do it!
eeeekkk! a group of us are planning a trip for next summer to italy! eeeekkkk!
*has always wanted to go to italy*
Amy is right planning trips is fun!
#sorrymrc
#sorrymrsc
Ooh, nice.
i doubt it will happen... although if you plan in advance enough you can get really cheap flights :D they want to do a road trip, am going to wait till they realise how expensive that might become lol
hey guys n gals. remind me next time i go picking up computers from random people i must have a car. good job i live 5 minutes from the train station. and when i say 5, i mean 15 with much cursing and bruising!
@lou italian gp weekend?
Andrew Hone needs to stop taking pics like this
#lensenvy
ooooo! i like that idea. sadly getting that many of my friends to go to an f1 race weekend would be mean...
shopping in milan then?
i was thinking more photography in florence :)
each to their own i guess.
:D
The train driver is a little trigger-happy with the horn. i think he is making up for something.
Those lurking, VIVA F1 quiz in about 7 minutes time.

This train has just stalled. twice. now has a worse start record than rubens!
#sorrylukeh
if Rubens' worse start record is less than 2 he's done pretty well ;)
stalled, or just stopped at the lights?
@lou you knew exactly what i meant, and i am sure rubens has stalled more times than incompetent train drivers. least he beats hakkinen in the launch control era!!
@startledbunny definitely stalled. revved up, then the engine switched off. its quite noticeable on a very old diesel train.
i know but... Lukeh would kill me if he was too busy coding and i didn't stand up for Rubens :P
i see
bit like the coach driver in the truman show then
:)

Did you know, Webbo gets the great honour of being our 3,000th post.
Wow. Should tweet that.
wow, very prolific :)
Just so you know, STD this week is a....
three thousand frickin' posts?
Indeedily. Lots of luverly guest posts that did it.
awesome people are awesome.
that is a lot of words though. wow.
It's not all guest posts though. Thank you both for all of your hard work. :)
I'm not doing a word count before you ask.
oh
Anyone else watching Junior Apprentice?
It's very amusing!
they look so funny in suits... like... someone shrunk alot of business people :D
It's like the Andrex advert with the baby running a business.
Very amusing.
Here is the Spot The Difference from the VivaF1 quiz. It needs a short intro.
Maverick's theme for the week was casinos what with it being Monaco. In one round we didn't know how many answers there were to a question, we had to guess the answers for one point each but if we got of them wrong we got no points for any of answers to that question... STD was in this round.
This means we don't know how many differences there are :) There could be the usual five, there could be fewer, there could be more.
Genius idea... until you see the picture: http://i39.tinypic.com/14csnxi.png
Good luck :D
one of them has a very posh accent and it makes me laugh :)
oh.......... flip.
That's roughly what I said :)
I found two after a lot of looking...
omg! :D yaaaayy!
No freaking way. There are some things I know just to not even attempt.
+1
I found more than two, but won't say how many ;)
found one
oh my god
found 2
so we have to keep secret how many we found?
:(
The quiz has finished and we've all submitted answers apart from Joebob who's wifi just died.. I think we can say now.
Someone is having a bit of a problem sending answers in, so best for now.
Unless you'd prefer to keep it open until the answers are posted later
I don't think he's here though i may be wrong
why can't we say how many? or is that like part of the question?
i... don't know.
We don't know how many there are
so... if i find 5... there might not be any more? how do we know we have finished?
Actually just spotted another but too late to get a point for it:)
You finish when your head explodes?
I've got 4*
*my mum found some
So you did attempt it then.
We don't. You say how many you got and wait for the answers. He's not posting them until this last entry comes in.
evil maverick
I wasn't going to, so I pointing it in the way of my mum, she got excited and found a few and I helped.
I see. I shall stand alone in my boycott of Mav's meanness then.
but... like... that's mean :(
i have 4... what if there aren't any more and i continue to look for another one? :(
It's not as impossible as it looks!
You are not alone ;)
I bet it is
Nah, 3 are fairly obvious, 1 is a bit mean though
Yeah, but you had the brains of two people...
Yay!
lou did it by herself!
I would say there are more than 4
I can tell you now, if she has 4, then she hasn't.
what?! i can see 4...
Answers have been revealed, theres 5, and I got them all...
Yes it is :)
I was writing my daily post though. so it completly passed me by. but looking at it I'm glad it did :D
so why does that mean i can't have 4?
If there are 5 then I also found them all Yay!
You can have 4. Unless you got one wrong, then you get 0.
Ping: http://sidepodcast.com/2010/05/12/monaco-2010-race-information/
WHAT?
what the??
why do i get the impression i should've read the original comment more carefully?
say there are 5 answers... you can give all 5 answers if you're confident for all 5 points but get any wrong and you get no points, so you may want to play safe with three answers
You really should have. That is the meanest part.
Scores are in. I'm last and Startledbunny is next, we're back to business as usual :)
but.... that doesn't change that i can see 4 differences atm?..
why did spot the difference suddenly become complicated :(
Answers http://www.vivaf1.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=1921
but... i don't want to play the game... i just want to spot the difference :(
If you can see four and you gave the correct four, you get four points.
That was the description for the round as a whole, we had three other questions the same.
I know the one I missed.
Mav is mean :(
we have managed not to get the same score as each other. our plan is working!!!!! ;)
i found the 5th one! :D
My best performance in ages and I still finished 3rd last.
Yay!
I think what RG meant by his original comment is that if you could see 4 differences then you hadn't finished... which is what you were asking, wasn't it?
Because now we have the answers and we know that there were five differences.
yes.. sorry it's been a confusing day. :)
For those too lazy to bother actually searching:

how did you copy my screen? it takes me ages to wipe the red pen off normally
That's how I keep track whenever I do one of the STD games.
I think that's enough excitement for me today. 'Night all, comment with you tomorrow.

evening everyone
ok, who's been fiddling with the headping settings?
Evening Leigh. ;)
i told you not to code all night :P
Heres a question to you Mr Leigh (and to anyone else who wants it)
You get 1 question to ask Mr McNish, what is it?
they reformed a few years back

erm yes?
if you had one word to describe your time at Toyota, what would it be?
Hi
:) Night
ooh i like
oooh yay.
have just been fiddling with the admin preview page. just wondered if you could take a quick look when you do your daily and let me know if previews now look more like posts pls?
How difficult is it getting into F1?
I had already written it, but I've checked and its working! :)
Ooooohh, I'd like to ask a question about his early career from when he tested for McLaren / Benetton in the early 90's and the uncertain direction of his career around that time, but I'm not sure how to phrase it.
Which do you find more difficult - endurance or speed?
You sound knowledgable :P you are allowed more than 1 question ;)
already? it's not even 11pm yet!
cheers :)
in terms of types of races, i.e sprints or endurance, or in terms of in a race?
i haven't beaten the time i wrote it mid afternoon yet though ;)
I guess I meant which was more difficult for him to achieve in any given race - concentration or fast laps.
ah ok, ta
crazy talk. the preview isn't perfect, but it'll hopefully tide us over for a bit.
Evening all
hey
Hello Steven
That looks like a McNish question
Ummm... this probably isn't too good, but how about this...
The Formula 1 world saw the dreadful accident that sidelined Felipe Massa in Hungary last year. You (Allan) were, yourself, involved in an accident at a F3000 race some years ago (again the early '90's), where you were injured.
How does one return to a competitive environment like motor racing after a stoppage like that and how does one cope with the potential psychological ramifications of a major accident?
...or something like that.
sounds good to me!
Are you interviewing McNish Jon?
its looking likely ye
How did you swing that?
Audi are having a few days over the UK where he's avaliable for interview
Martin Haven confirms the GP2 air times on Eurosport;
@MartinHaven - GP2 race 1, LIVE at 1015BST on Friday morning on British Eurosport. GP2 race 2, tape-delay at 2015BST Saturday evening.
sweet
:)
let's hope no one does "a grosjean" this year... that was a little too scary.
If you are looking for questions you could pick up on Leigh's momentum theme.
His first full year racing cars he and Hakkinen were team mates at Dragon Motorsport which had full Marlboro sponsorship and raced in Formula Vauxhall/Opel Lotus. McNish concentracted on the UK championship and Hakkinen on the European but they raced together when there were no fixture clashes. At the end of that season Marlboro had one F3 seat available and gave it to McNish with the idea tha he would have a learning year and challenge for the title the next. Just think about that. They drop Mika for McNish. McNish won the championship then lost it on a technicality. Hakkinen ran in a middling team and then stepped into McNish's seat the following year and won the title. Had Marlboro chosen Hakkinen first maybe things would have been different.
McNish stepped up to F3000 with DAMS who were Marlboro's team and the works Lola team. McNish had a good learning year and his team mate Comas won the championship. The following year McNish was a huge favourite for the F3000 title but Lola built an absolute dog that all the other teams dumped after a few races and switched to Reynards. DAMS being the works team were stuck with the Lola and that season killed all the momentum in McNish's career and his single seater career never recovered. Again had Marlboro chosen Hakkinen instead of McNish for F3, Mc Nish would not have been championship favourite in F3000 that year and it would not have had such a dramatic effect on his career
I am sure you can dig some questions out of that lot
I love being so influential.
Today Sidepodcast, tomorrow the world!!
;)
It's something people ten to ignore but so often momentum can be lost and a driver's career never recovers
True
I think especially nowadays with so many series, it really destroys so many peoples careers
Having seen the inner kerbs at Piscine I'm convinced there will be a car in the wall in that area.
Which brings me to the question, what on earth is up with Bertrand Baguette in IndyCar at the moment?
I understand why they wanted to raise the kerbs but there has to be a better answer.
You could tie it in to The Feeder Series. There was a 'new talent' test a few months ago in the States, I think Skip Barber was involved and they were all people from karting and other non-pro backgrounds I think. McNish was the judge.
No no no idea. F1 didnt want him?
Skip Barber's school yeah
petrov had more money
Adam Cooper tweeted this photo about an hour ago:
http://twitpic.com/1n90gx
But he has been *dreadful* in the first four IRL rounds on road / streets circuits and now he's on the ovals.... he has more than disappointed and actually been closer to shocking
McNish is doing judging a thing with the Jim Russell school in California and had their logo on his helmet at Spa
While Petrov has been exciting at times this year.
Mr C: Loving the latest updates to the homepage. Especially the little "realtime" disk, even though it's a small thing.
He added in two followups, "Asked Charlie Whiting about it tonight and he says it's a deterrent and people have the option to go left, miss it, and slow down. People crashed there every year even with the old kerb so it's sure to be a problem, especially for the Renault 3.5 and GP2 guys!"
cheers paul. more to come soon hopefully.
He really is doing a Grosjean then... a promising talent floundering...
