A new week and more F1 racing to look forward to. Hopefully the rain will actually occur during the race this time, instead of after it. Actually, if volcanic ash gets rained on track, it may literally spice things up. Not that it is going to happen in reality, but one can always hope. As for today's bulletpoints:
- A brilliant guest post by Steven Roy on dangerous innovations and what F1 is not doing about it.
- Christine's rankings are up. I particularly admire a certain Spanish
octopusdriver. Maybe that's why his thumbs had to be insured? She has also posted on Franck's 2nd place at SPA. Is he becoming an after-thought when compared to Mitch? - Jake Humphrey has updated his blog. He brings up motorhomes, which leads to:
- Mercedes has decided that they like living in a box instead of thinking out of one. No wonder that they chose to pander to the old rather than change for the new.
- Meanwhile, said old driver is getting bad reviews from Jenson Button. Even Schumi's manager is slamming him, although he later backtracks by being ridiculous.
- Moving on to another German driver, Sebastian was apparently told to give up on the Spanish race by Red Bull. I am now certain that RBR does not have what it takes to win the constructor's championship.
- Alonso has started the mind games, and Jenson calls him out on it. I am counting down till when sparks fly in both teams.
- F1 is being called out for being less soap-opera-ish. I don't like Max Mosley, but I'll be delighted to have Jean Todt back at Ferrari.
- Following up on Mr. C's comment, I've done some searching and discovered that on 11th May 2008 Felipe won at his favourite circuit; 11th May 1997 was when Schumi was still dominant and won by a 53-second margin; 11th May 1986 saw a perfect race by eventual WDC Alain Prost; and on 11th May 1975 Niki Lauda won Ferrari's 1st Monaco GP in 20 years. Christine does her own version albeit 3 days late.
- The Sidepodcast gang has been busy: Gavin's driver consistency post for Barcelona should provide some good reading, and I am looking forward to Pat's new blog.
- I post on 'Ayrton versus Prost', both the book and the rivalry. And please try out my game if you haven't yet done so. It isn't all that wonderful yet, so comments would be awesome.
- Lastly, here is a belated happy birthday to Nick Heidfeld. Although his chances of getting a drive with Mercedes seems a little slimmer now, I (among many others) prefer him so much more than that oldie.
That's all for today. If you have any 11th May event to share, please do guest post. Otherwise, the comments page is waiting for you. ;)
hey brand new day
:D
Jon!!! I should be refusing to advise you by the way!!! You gave me very bad advice last night. I'm now officially in a huff with you all.
genius :)
What did i do now?
I should have kept Nick's present. I blame you entirely!
so.. Mr C, i hear you're interested in a dslr with video... tell me more :)
2 questions;
1) what was his present?
2) why should you have kept it?
Great daily Marilene
You said that was my fault and it was his
hehehe. i very much lou, i'm so glad you asked.
basically, dslr's will likely kill off traditionally video cameras for semi-pros, because they offer way more choice at a much better price. canon are leading the field.
did you hear the last episode of house was filmed entirely with canon dslr's? an international HD tv show.
I was going to keep it because he was asleep. You and Steven made me give it to him!! I'm not telling you what it was because I've had enough ridicule already :(
What was it and who gives/throws away presents?
BOTH OF YOU!!!
talk about a blame culture
Nonononono. I said that you keeping it (for good) because he was on a different time zone and needed sleep, wasnt a good enough reason to keep it!
I seem to have a habit of really REALLY annoying her without really doing anything. It's mighty impressive
I read that, very interesting
My photographer pal reckons HD footage will be the source for "pics" soon enough
That was a big debate!
Thank you. Although dailies do tend to write themselves. ;)
His present was a moral point apparently
:D
but, as a photographer what's the point in paying a bit more for a camera with video... when you wont use the video?.. plus isn't it a bit of a battery drain?
noo i didn't hear that, very interesting, i'll let Canon fuss around with video and things, and i'll hope that Nikon don't bother too much :P i much prefer my simple Nikon :)
Hahaha something like that. You know what he gets like though.... After I offered it to him, he didn't want it anymore. He's like a toddler!
I'm still not sure what I've done wrong
hm
I had a play with the other blog and it has a new theme which I think makes it easier to read. http://toomuchracing.com/
as someone who takes pictures and makes videos, it suits me better.
erm... http://www.dpreview.com/news/0907/09073007nikond300s.asp
now you're making them sound easy!
i agree with him. have you seen the video tab on the sidepodcast homepage? the still is a picture taken from a hd video.
You told me to give it to him. All you've done is encourage him to be (more) childish!!!
talk about being easily led.
fair enough :)
oh dammit. *cradles 5 year old lovely simple dslr*
No I didn't, never did I say* "you must give it to him" I said that you shouldnt keep hold of it, whatever IT is
*if i did say that its not what i meant :D
I lent him my D40 and tried to let him make his own mind up
I think it's too late, he played with a Canon in store and liked it
He tends to pick the opposite to the advice of friends, I don't know why I haven't tried reverse psychology yet :)
following the instructions of a 19 year old, error
i can see that happening sadly :(
There are only two options. I have it or he does. This is no middleground. You saying I shouldn't keep it, is the same as saying I have to give it.
I'm only 21
I have no idea what IT is. You wanted to give it to him originally, so i blame you.
error
sidepodcast homepage? the still is a picture taken from a hd video.I have and to some extent I agree
For me, it depends on your needs
I think a still will still be have more artistic merit and will be in demand, albeit niche
I have friends who still use Polaroids for certain situations
You'd only laugh. I don't trust you anymore....
Format fail
Mr C: I'll create an iPad Doohickey list on the wiki for you, sorry
Switching threads confuses it, I think
of course. but that wasn't the debate was it? if the question is "will they?", answer is yes. is if the question is "is that bad?", i'd say it depends.
Did you ever? :D
You think I don't know my own age?
more than the iphone?
Tell me then. I promise not to tell Jon
#confidential
You're worse :(
How? I am helpful. Ask Lou
wooohooo
Agreed
It will happen, better pics will come from stills - on the whole
Video will capture stuff that a photo never will, fractions of a second can totally change a story
Guys are such gossips. Ignore them Allison.
I don't know why I put up with it...
tis true... although i'm not actually sure what you're all talking about...
To be honest, i dont think anyone knows whats going on
:) the girls of spc will also try give advice if needed ;)
I don't know if it's magnifying an issue or if it's unique
As it's so much easier to switch threads it's become very apparent
Have got the 'cannot post in this thread' message when I'm in the correct thread. Several times' usually after switching between Dailies and back
I have absolutely no idea other than it is Jon's fault I am getting blamed
I'm happy to take the blame if I get told what im being blamed for
don't you remember #blamesteven
.. i'm sure even Mr C remembers that hashtag :)
Steven, anything being your fault is NOT new :)
Ahh, you love us really. We're lovely. Well... I am anyway ;)
Giving awful advice! You even called me mean....
You said that you were going to not give him something because he had to sleep, i would say thats mean
I sense we've been over this before.... :P
yaaaaayyyy!!!! i just replied to my uni offers :) i can now stop worrying about ucas till august! :) choices made.. just need to get the grades now :)
*weight = lifted* :)
You're mean then :P
odd. won't be able to fix until have one, unless i can repeat in the simulator, shall look into it, ta.
having said that, we have to make the doohickey read-only for non-daily and non-live threads soon, or i'll shoot someone.
YAY
seconded. go lou
I hope you didn't take anyone's shoddy advice!!! :P
:D :D is it wrong that the biggest worry on my mind at this exact moment is that i still haven't got a dress for our leavers ball in a few weeks..
It is great that you can worry about that
Lou: I hear there was a danger that Lukeh had a potential schedule clash with the Jonsi gig that has now been averted
Problem notification and solution in one tweet :)
i hear thats "a big thing"
#lovesbeingaguy
*visions of you strapping in to a big simulator*
Gavin: duck :)
hehe i'll blame steven if it all goes wrong :P
hehe I'm just happy a good university likes me :)
well done
Bluewater visit with Emily
#SoberShopping
i didn't mention any names ;)
oh yeah, last week he was worried his dissertation presentation would be on the same day or something.. he had a 1/5 chance of it being anyway. Today he found out is the day before Jonsi, so all is good.
:)
I'm useless as shopping with other people.. i may need to get on a train to Canterbury Thursday after school and go on a mission. Bluewater is scary busy over a weekend.
i hate dresses... absolutely hate them... i'm going to be sooooo grumpy when i go shopping for one..
Hoorah! a w/e response asking for a cv. this is positive
Tardy Comment Trawlers beware
Let me come with you???? :D :D :D
Or you could buy a dress for me? That's also an option!!!
Wear something else then
Internet shopping is the way forward
Make a day of it with fun at the end but a friend who'll give you honest advice on a purchase like that is invaluable
i'm just as much to blame. i think it'll make a lot of sense. you see all comments, and if they're on an unusual thread you have to got to that thread.
in return, we'll loose the post content from doohickey.
come down to kent over the weekend and i will happily let you help me choose a dress! (if you can put up with a grumpy lou)
No. I'm sorry. Not for a dress. Unless you want a dress that doesn't fasten or something equally bad.
Noooo, you choose some you like on internet and then go and try them on.
noooooooo! if i'm going to buy a dress i want to know it looks okay and fits alright before i buy it, not after.
Have you considered a bold 1920's Gangster 3 piece suit with spats?
#BeDifferent
Not for ball gowns... I reckon ;)
This is not timesaving. Most of the issue is that things look nice on the hanger, you try them on and suddenly they're hideous!
:D Em want's to go as a Darlek.. i think that shows our reluctance to go to this ball. However there is a champagne reception and free wine on the table so it might be a fun evening :)
Not for clothes period. Unless you like really non-fitting ones.
Spatz was that ITV kids show set in a burger bar
Both of those sound fantastic!
Especially a drunk Dalek
Both go as daleks and use the head plunger thing as a straw
pshh, ive bought my other half a dress online before, it fitted and looked awesome, she loved it, and not just in a "ive got to smile because atleast you've tried" kind of way
:)
I really don't mean to be mean but...
#badadvicealert
Weird. Normal people don't have experiences like this.
so i hear
So you think ;)
worked for meee
My thoughts exactly :D
i'm not a fan of shopping :(.. if we go somewhere like bluewater i end up spending waaay too long in the apple store.. or near the makeup and hardly any time looking at clothes i need :)
oi! she loved it (she's a bad liar) and her friends all said how much they liked it (and they didnt know i'd bought it!)
meanies
I'm sure it was gorgeous. You got lucky :)
So lucky.
What about hiring a vintage dress?
Orrrr, I know what she likes?
i might need to do that...
Westcountry Dalek.
Exterminate, get off moi laaaand,
It's not about liking it really though. It's just that lots of things don't fit properly. Sadly people don't come in one of 6 standard sizes.
Or hiring full-stop
You can get a killer designer label for the same price as a purchase and a neutra,l knowledgeable person to point you in the right direction
I think this wine went to my head
I discovered Jacques cider last week, a bottle of cider the size of a wine bottle.
That went to my head!
How often are you ever going to wear one you buy again?
Is that a sentence in your head?
Hiring is an amazing idea though. You can get something properly stunning!
Exactly
Wedding dress makers only make so much cash on sales through sentimentality
Yes apart from the typo comma
Cider often does. I thought Jacques was a girl's drink but I'm not really in the loop
Amateurs ;)
Yeah i think it is a bit, very nice though
Post production punctuation errors
#SackTheIntern
Sometimes I can have a lot and sometimes I can't, may be related to food intake... today I only had a bit of pasta as I've been stuffing my face all weekend
it's soo much fuss for one evening.. lol
And they say romance is dead....
Food, mood, weather
There are so many variables
If it's for more than once, you're better off buying though :P
Why don't women hire a dress that would ordinarily cost 5 times as much to buy, if it makes them look and feel better on the day?
I know. I just thought the way you put it was funny :D
Katie Price's first wedding dress must've been really expensive
I've assumed already that it was in no way, nice ;)
It's Mr C's fault. He broke iPad Doohickey ;)
Random thought: does anyone else think that William Hague sounds really drunk every time he speaks?
And your romantic side? Did Mr C break that too?
Be nice about William! I love him and want him to be PM.
#thingsishouldnevereversay
Sounds robotic but not drunk
I prefer to be drunk before I listen to William Hague.
He had his chance didn't he? Has anyone ever been party leader more than once?
hmpf.
sleep for me, MSA Academy bed time reading for me tonight....lets just say i shant be awake for long :P night
#unmensionables
Strongly recommend steering away from politics
Night
have fun, night
I have a romantic side
I also have logic
Killer Dress on the day & in photo > Very nice dress in wardrobe
IMHO
Agreed
:)
#SorryJon
Can I watch you have this discussion with a woman please? I think it would be really funny.
Night Jon
Please report your dreamage tomorrow
Been there, was fine. It's the ladies choice, that's just my thinking on the matter
I tend to kick it with people of similar mindset which, I guess, is why I find myself more single than not
:(
The Gordon Brown career profiles have obviously been very well prepared
It's like an obituary
It is really silly though. Like what on earth are you going to do with it afterwards...? Two of my friends shared one. That seemed sensible to me.
Sad but true
I don't like to settle
See, logically that makes sense but you know that everyone else will compare who looked better [in private]
Did one go in then meet the other one in the toilet and give her the dress for 20 minutes?
We're assuming that Alison doesn't have Siamese Friends
I agree with bassano
Thanks Amy
On what?
That Alison has siamese friends?
okay, bed time for me. night all! xx
Night Lou
Night Lou
I was going to say does anyone. Sadly I realised I spent a good 20 minutes today having an argument about a lamp with my boyfriend....
Learning to compromise is tiring but necessary
Settling is another issue entirely, no one wins
We all know he was wrong
#LawOfAverages
That pretty pictures are better than an unworn dress in the wardrobe.
Night - and I'm heading too, see ya
:D
I tried to tell him he'd be less wrong if he started less arguments. I'm not sure he was convinced....
By this I clearly mean fewer arguments! I think it's contagious.
I was going to point that out but I didn't want to start an argument ;)
Don't tell him I said this but you know he just likes the debate?
Night Pat
Specifically, I think a dress worn once that looks better is more valuable than one that is moth fodder
I used to have a decent command of the English language too
The Internet stolez it
No kidding :)
Once you figure out that someone is naturally contrary, it becomes easier
I'm guessing it becomes harder if you're in a relationship with them
Errr yeah... We're both very childish!
Amy: am replying to Pamela
No worries
I'm not sure it's childish but I kinda know what you mean
What about changing your mind about wanting things when someone offers them to you? I'm sure that's toddler logic :P
Any Man who doesn't realise and acknowledge a woman's right to do so is just asking for trouble
That's not mean, it's just life
Awww no I'm being mean. Life is good.
Just heard the news
RIP Lena Horne
Beautiful talent that graced this earth
Don't tell Steven but we need to nudge him soon on a SidepodScotland update
#Confidential
Ah yes. Sadly I'm not actually planning on living so close to Scotland from about a month's time....
From Sesame Street to Noel Coward
Weekend At Steven's 2: Steven Goes South
It's a prequel
#Confidential
I think we should turn up at his house. I'm sure he'd let us in.
Well, now you've blown it, I thought we were being #confidential
How's Wednesday?
#StrictlyConfidential
Sadly I'm busy
#conspiracy
Well, once I've convinced Mr C to make the SPC wiki mobile Safari friendly, I was thinking about turning up at Loch Roy and shouting: STEVEN!!!!
Cos, that'd work
Ooooooh I'm good at that!
STEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEVEN!!!!!!
Tomorrow?
Otherwise it's the weekend of the 22/23rd
#SoConfidentialYourLifeIsAtRisk
No, I mean actually in his home town :)
Ah yeah I'm moving house that weekend. It's probably not the best day for stalking Steven
#confidential
Wouldn't it be easier if you packed him
I think he'd need food, Irn Bru and a mobile device
So
a) you found somewhere
b) where is it
c) well done
You know he's lurking, of course?
Woo hoo i told Pamela you wouldn't mind :D
I've not found somewhere permanent. I've got somewhere that's warm, clean and cheap that I can rent with a week's notice when I want to leave to move somewhere nicer.
I did warn her about the dangers of knowing my alter ego
Her life is in your hands
Moving counties?
Oh erm sorry. Back to Liverpool yeah :D
I think you mentioned that
Closer to Scotland than I
#NoExcuseForSidepodScotlandFounders
Whatever :P
I presume I still have to come up here to speak to family members...
It's really not me holding up the parade!!
Steven, when you've stopped lurking:
Alison and I would like an update on SidepodScotland please
Before/After Spa?
I won't tell if you don't
I travelled the world and missed SidepodOpportunities, I've no allusions that this can work ;)
I had nightmares that Nick would forget to pick me up at the airport. Does that count?
*Illusions*
:)
No, that's normal
I went to Sydney for a week [for Valentine's Day] and my GF slept in and was an hour late in picking me up at the airport
It was only her Dad getting up for work that saved the day
Oh dear. Please never tell me about that again. I might never leave the house.
I just remember the hassle we had with meeting me at a tube station :P
You don't inspire me with confidence in SPS
I'm finding a pub and then head-pinging Steven
I'll send you a Pigeon ;)
http://uk.autold.com/map-l2873.html
Hope this helps
It's going to have to be after Spa for me
We can't have SPS without you though. You're the only one that lives there :P
Not iPad friendly
I knew you were lurking
I was hoping there wouldn't actually be a Loch Roy
I wasn't lurking I was playing a stupid football game and losing
Fair enough
Is SidePodDublin out of the question?
Early June
There is also a Glen Roy and a Brae Roy on that map
I saw the "Roy Lodge" I can only presume that's your house.
Knew you would comment trawl too
Is for me but Mr and Mrs C had a plan to visit Eddie Irvine's bar a while ago so maybe you could volunteer them
Whissst laddie
Damn. Hoped you wouldn't see that. It's the family estate
He has a pub in Dub, not the South?
I only scanned a few. Normally I don't any more. I don't even search for my name in comments now. I treat the doohickey as a real time thing and if I miss something when I am not here so be it
No idea
You think Christine's gonna let Mr C step into a bar with me again?
*North*
She has her A-Z and this qualifies for E, I or whatever letter its name starts with
*In Ireland*
It's like my Krypton!
A family friend inherited a lovely house in Ireland. I really should start trying to persuade Nick to go on holiday there.... I think if I start pestering now, we might make it about summer 2012
It's called Cocoon and is in Dublin
And it closed last year
http://www.simplyweddings.com/wedding/Newsworthy/General/content/Cocoon-Eddie-Irvines-Bar-Set-To-Close-THIS-Saturday/3543.htm
Irvine's from Newtownards, County Down
And I've love this quote:
“But at the end of the day, I’m Irish. I mean, I’ve got a British passport, but if you’re from Ireland, north or south, you’re Irish. And ‘British’ is. . . such a nondescript thing, isn’t it?”
That's never stopped an Irish pub in the past
Errrrm yeah I might tread carefully on that front....
I understand that comment
Get in with both feer
feet
He's too English not to get beaten up
Unless you convince everyone he's a mute Celt
I don't think he's gonna go along with that.
You're in good company
Same
It makes sense. I just think that's a very controversial statement to some :P
My parents are Glaswegian. I've managed to sidestep many a fight on this topic!
They are from Glasgow and you avoid fights??? Was the milkman from Edinburgh?
Agreed
I think that a passport is just a document that makes airports easier, it doesn't define me
Obviously, Alison's family are not from Paisley
However did you guess....
On a less political note
Who will take out Sutil at Monaco next week? It's a tradition now, isn't it?
I vote Shumacher.
I could comment but it probably would be stereotypical and unfamily-friendly ;)
Does it not have to be a Finn?
Maybe Kimi will get drunk and storm the track after watching Iron Man 2
Iron Man is particularly rousing?
That one has a limited audience :(
There's a Monaco track invasion that results in car destruction in Iron Man 2
Something about Mickey Rourke's surgeon I think
Ah. It's not really my cup of tea.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xj_SjCxOy94 Possible spoilers but also Scarlett Johansson so is probably worth it
The film's rubbish anyways so....
I can also recommend Kick-Ass but not for our younger commenters & lurkers
To balance this I've have downloaded , Kafka, Melville & Joyce onto the iBook app
[thank you Project Gutenberg]
I read somewhere today that Virgin has a new poker sponsor and they are bringing some of the world's best poker players to races. Given how many drivers play poker there may be a few empty seats on the grid as the top poker pros could take the chance to liberate a lot of money
I disagree, Transformers is rubbish. IM is quality escapism
Have you seen this one though?
Not a Monaco exploitation at all, no honestly
IM2, yes. Last week
And you liked it?
I thought it was good but still suffered from 2nd album syndrome
I just cringe when he cuddles the lady wearing his suit.... Like that must be so unpleasant for everyone!
Scarlett kicking butt was enough for me [sorry]
#StillBetterThanMichaelBayFilms
Also when I hear Iron Man, I can't help but think of the book which has nothing to do with this at all.
It was funny and the dialogue afterwards made the scene
I really think director John Favreaux got the mix right
Also that must have been the gayest fight scene ever.... I really can't get over that.
The detail is in the "The"
I keep thinking of The Cardigan's cover of Iron Man
This http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LRUZiR81_L0&feature=youtube_gdata [The Cardigans] vs http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t2u3r_pOrwA&feature=youtube_gdata [Ozzy]
I'm guessing only Pat W will appreciate that one
Yeah see I hadn't heard the song before.... I was probably about 12 when that came out #sorry
S'alright, it was quite obscure, being a B-side before they were chart-famous an'all
The Cardigans, I mean
They also did a great loungey version of "The Boys Are Back In Town" though I can't find a sample of it
I wasn't born before Hendrix's peak but I still think he's a God amongst men
Yeah but that's not like Cardigan's B-sides....
Cardigan's B-Sides of Black Sabbath Tunes
Well, despite there being no work tomorrow
I think the 4 o'clock rule still applies
I should probably go to bed
Night folks
Just back from Barce...
Biggest excitement was Sam Bird's GP2 drives...
Great stuff Sam...
Did he win?
not Lewis crashing? :P
:D
Aww :( I have got better lately - and I am certainly not the only one. I don't think you should make daily threads read-only as that goes against the point of the doohickey.
The problem I have is that now that the doohickey displays the whole post, I tend to have a window open with the 'Quick Comment' button at the top - because once I have read the post I rarely need to see it again. To me, this recent change has made it harder to use, but I know I am the minority here and that I am particularly singled out for getting it wrong. Maybe that's fair and I should know better because I am a regular here.
It's not for absent-mindedness that I get it wrong. I just think it could be made easier - perhaps if we could minimise the post or have a reminder text next to the quick comment button? I like using doohickey as it's the most portable and compatible commenting system. If you really want to do the read-only thing, could you perhaps implement some of the 'click to quote' functions back into the 'Ye Olde' pages - as that would give me an incentive to use that method (which I have been trying to do). Or perhaps we could have the option to undo - like we used to in 'Ye Olde'... so that I can easily correct my mistake rather than have you guys go through and change them later?
I'd appreciate that rather than being made to feel a bit dumb for getting it wrong all the time that we be constructive about this and use me as a guinea-pig for any ideas for implementation. I don't like getting it wrong as much as you guys don't and I'll be most happy to help, even if it's just a discussion on how I could do it better.
Does anyone else have any tips or tricks on how they make sure they stay in the right thread?
Personally, I stay away from the quick comment button.
That might be the best idea for me. It's certainly how I get it wrong - I just put in a quick comment and next thing I know, it's in the wrong thread :(
My sister wants to know how she can send email notifications out automatically when she updates her private blog (it's blogger I think). Can anyone help out here?
I asked Crofty what was he asking Martin Whitmarsh in that weird photo last night, and he responded (http://twitter.com/CroftyF1/status/13775399858)
I'm not sure but that's a great photo
I'm not sure I've heard it actually... will listen when I get home..
Morning all
Morning all.
Morning Pat and Lukeh :)
Good morning. :)
Was only joking..
I know - but it is a problem I have and I would like to figure out how to get better at it - because I don't want to annoy everyone by getting it wrong all the time.
What I don't understand is that I consider myself good with IT - I can fix computers, I taught myself how to use MS Office, and I'm generally IT-Savvy. Yet the Doohickey always throws me a curveball :(
Why not just take a second before you hit post to check the thread?
I found I was using it too quickly and making assumptions about where it was at a given time..
Because I wrongly assume I am in the right one I suppose?
I think that's what I am doing TBH.
Yup. And so to fix it, if you know you're not hitting reply but using the quick comment button instead, just take a second to scroll up and glance at the post. Problem solved.
I tend to use '/livecommenting' rather than '/realtime' doohickey. It is just more structured so you are less likely to be in the wrong thread.
LCLT doesn't get enough love :D
I only use LCLT for Live sessions. I much prefer Doohickey, but I could switch to Dailies if a quick quoting mechanism was implemented...
Also a good plan. I think I use realtime for the daily post, and rarely change it. If something live is on, I open up live commenting, and if it's on another post, I click through to ye olde.
We have been pondering click to quote in ye olde posts but it's unlikely to work. If you're scanning down the list of comments and randomly clicking, you'll get to the bottom and find a box full of blockquotes.
Hmm. Not feeling terribly smart right now TBH!
Making full use of all the SPC facilities! ;)
I think because it updates so quickly it fools you into thinking you have to post right.that.second. It did me anyway
Very true. However LCLT doesn't work too well on old browsers for heavily-commented posts, which means I can't use it between 8am-4pm :(
It's not about being smart, it's about habit.
Ah. I don't know about that stuff.
Just like to keep Mr C on his toes :)
That makes me feel a little better. I'm going to try and not use the quick comment button from now on and see what happens...
Looks like the Bridgestone bosses in F1 are trying to stay in the sport
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/83520
Tyre war!
I can't wait. Please happen!
*throws stack of Bridgestones*
I poked a Bridgestone tyre at Goodwood. It's very tough, I wouldn't mess with those things.
That would make for an awesome t-shirt
"I poked a Bridgestone tyre at goodwood and all I got was this lousy t-shirt"
:D Bridgestone merchendise?
Definitely a missed opportunity. :)
Even Schumi's manager is slamming him, although he later backtracks by being ridiculous. {Original entry}
I thought Michael managed himself these days, in which case Willi can only benefit by down-talking him in favour of, say, Nico Hulkenburg?
Now, we all know I am not one for diving in the archives, but still, Mike Garth, who we talked about in this show: http://sidepodcast.com/2009/02/01/episode-92-fit-to-race/ is doing one of those crazy things for charity, so it's worth sponsoring if you have a penny or two.
http://twitter.com/mikegarth/status/13778966138
I've done some searching and discovered that on 11th May 2008 Felipe won at his favourite circuit {Original entry}
I'm unlikely ever to forget that date, largely because Fisi completed a three-year run of first-corner accidents by redefining the word "overtaking"...
I don't think Weber was ever a true manager for Schumi. Schumi seems too controlled.
Three years in a row at the same track?
Every time Felipe won there I think.
Ooh, awesome.
That sounds like an On This Day guest post if ever I heard one!
yaaaaayyyy!!!! i just replied to my uni offers :) i can now stop worrying about ucas till august! :) choices made.. just need to get the grades now :)
*weight = lifted* :) {Comment #65}
Excellent news :) You will do absolutely fine and get into somewhere you like if I know you at all :)
I have a very annoying feeling today where I feel there is something I need to do but I don't know what.
I don't think Weber was ever a true manager for Schumi. Schumi seems too controlled. {Comment #337}
Webber used to do all Schumi's management for him, but I think Schumi did learn how to manage himself at a faster rate than most drivers. By the end of his first stint in F1, I think you were right that Schumi was basically doing his own management. Which would explain why he arranged the second stint by himself.
True. I think Sebastian V. has always managed himself. Is there anyone else?
Three years in a row at the same track? {Comment #338}
2006, 2007 and 2008 (though only the last one resulted in a DNF). He and the BBC crew had quite the laugh about it in last year's Turkish qualifying build-up.
I'll sort out the guest post after I've done my blog entry (because if I don't start doing the engine/gearbox updates now they won't be done in time for first practise at Monaco). Though I may come to regret ever mentioning this because even as a Tifisi I have trouble coming up with a decent justification for this run of collisions...
Woo! Thank you :)
True. I think Sebastian V. has always managed himself. Is there anyone else? {Comment #345}
Rubens Barrichello has managed himself since 2005 - he arranged his own Honda contract and as far as I know hasn't had a manager since.
Mark Webber would have managed himself this year if Flavio Briatore's ban had stuck. Lewis Hamilton currently doesn't have a manager but is looking for one.
Is it to go to Greggs?
Mark should be fine with or without Flavio. But Hamilton better find someone, fast.
yeah, but we've also stopped making breakouts.
i'm not making daily threads read only, i'm making non-daily posts read only.
doohickey is flawed and it needs fixing. it's no-ones fault that mistakes happen other than the person who designed it.
Possibly, that is a part of the puzle but perhaps not the grand scheme of my empty day :)
it's coming, and i reckon the solution will blow your away. give me a few more weeks of no f1 news and it'll be up.
he's mental! :)
BREAK OUT THE KUMHOOOO!!!
In the doohickey?
Did it feel like hard plastic?
Even Go Kart tyres get sticky and warm eh!
Thanks to Marilene for plugging my new blog so quickly in the Daily :) For those that missed it last night or don't read the post, I made a new personal blog.
I also changed the theme of the other one because I preferred the layout and improved readbility, even if it still a bit cluttered.
Oooooooh its like a film trailer!
Coming soon to a browser near you.... in a world where live commenting is at the forefront of conversations... one individual, with no name and just a panda suit, is about to turn live commenting upside down...
It didn't feel as bouncy as I hoped. Disappointing times were had.
yeah, non-daily/non-live. so comments for steven's post, or your franck post will be seen, but the reply button disabled. shouldn't affect giggles or any of the race posts.
Sauber revised car looks a lot more reliable and faster
http://tweetphoto.com/21976140
No problem. All I ask for is updates and nice posts. ;)
Sorry that was a typo on my part.
I shall clarify my point by saying I don't think that you should make any threads read-only when accessed from the doohickey as it seriously limits the functionality
I disagree. Doohickey is a brilliant tool that is unrivalled by many other different solutions from websites who have a lot more money and resources than you do. You should be proud of it and want to make it better rather than risk restriciting it.
I approve of the new theme BTW ;)
Ooooh. Looks pretty. :D
i know. but the current functionality is broken.
it makes me angry and it makes me want to remove it altogther.
woah. Don't be rash. It isn't perfect but it isn't that bad either.
Hi,
Have the podcasts stopped? didn't get any over the Spanish GP weekend. I checked itunes and hte last one was an aside with joe from 24 April. (apart from the redbull video).
Is it itunes or just me. I tried catching up at sidepodcast.com but can't find them there either.
John
Take a step back and look at the Live Commenting solutions here. While others use Facebook or IRC chat, you guys have made bespoke solutions that work excellently. I can't see why that makes you angry when you should be proud of what you guys have done here...
it makes me not want to blog.
if you sit down and blog for an hour, you know you'll spend the next six yelling at people (and yourself) for being in the wrong place.
moving / cleaning up comments sucks.
Will try..
Ah good, ta :)
That looks like an old-fashioned solution!
Get us to help then?
Hi John,
More information here: http://sidepodcast.com/2010/04/10/downshifting/
It's not rash, he's been saying that for a long time.
Progress update: I've done the engine update for my blog, so now I can start the guest post.
have tried that to a point, it will just create more comments.
say you post in the wrong place and then move it. the first thing you do will be to say "oops, posted that wrong". or what happens if people quote you before you've moved it. you then can't move theirs.
to me, it makes more sense to prevent it in the first place. and given that 99% of comments happen on either one of two threads, i really can't see this being a problem.
you'll still see comments come in, you just have to make an additional conscious step to reply.
tis true. it's not a huge coincidence that the doohickey has fallen way behind the rest of the site redesign too.
I like this idea a lot :)
Petrov is really easy on his engines, isn't he? Renault seems more reliable than Ferrari this year.
I'm heading off for a little bit into that crazy place known as the outside world, see you all later.
Well as long as LCLT stays I am happy. :D
OK fair enough. If you need any help - testing, whatever ... I will be happy to provide assistance.
See ya Lukeh.
it will.
Do we think Vettel has stuffed his engine by having to rely on engine braking so much in spain?
ta
Well it kinda is. It always happens that you focus on one thing over another. At the moment, that thing just happens to be... fonts.
Petrov is really easy on his engines, isn't he? Renault seems more reliable than Ferrari this year. {Comment #382}
He certainly is. It's not even like he goes out of races particularly often. But the Renaults only appear to be reliable in their own cars because Webber is one of four drivers with more than the average number of engines used (admittedly the other three are Ferraris but still...)
It's the least I can do ;)
won't someone think of the typefaces?
Do we think Vettel has stuffed his engine by having to rely on engine braking so much in spain? {Comment #388}
I'm not sure. It may depend on how he was using the engine braking. If we see Red Bull hastily swapping out the engine after Thursday at Monaco (or more tellingly still, the engine explodes on Thursday), we can probably assume the answer is yes.
Oh the Helvetica!
I hope not. :( This is to be startlingly similar to McLaren in 2003-2005.
You are thinking about them enough for all of us :)
I kind of want to watch the movie, Mr C's enthusiasm is infectious :D
Hi Christine,
Sorry to hear that. Hope it all works out for you guys. I've been a podcast listener but infrequent visitor to the site, so didn't the news "hot off the presses."
Best of luck with whatever you decide to do and I'll look forward to the asides with Joe.
JOhn
Newey is the new Colin Chapman.
JOS the boss? Verstappen supporter perchance?
it's just about the geekiest thing you can watch, and some of the people interviewed are completely out of their tree, but i do recommend it.
;)
am looking at the new bbc homepage: http://www.bbc.co.uk/
i think they could've done something much more user friendly with that "More..." button at the top of the page.
hi everyone
I have realised I have started to quite like David Guetta's songs - I accidentally keep picking them for my iPod...
hi
Do they make you want to buy a dancing Citroen?
hello ;)
regarding the onthis day/GP anniversary bit, there was a GP anniversary left out by many - last weekend marked the 30th anniversary of Tiff Needell's one and only F1 start at the 1980 Belgian GP!!
True story.
Hmm. No they actually make me want to go for a run!
Bah.
what do you mean "bah!"
it's tiff needell
TIFF NEEDELL!!
;)
I don't like him. And he snobbed me at Le Mans last year.
silly, silly tiff
And there was that whole episode where he punted off Mansell at the TOCA shootout, put him in hospital (all by accident) but then in an interview, claimed it was payback because he had punted him off in a TVR race earlier...
Hullo again
Have we seen this idea? The end of year young driver test might be in Abu Dhabi during the week after the GP
http://adamcooperf1.com/2010/05/09/f1-young-driver-test-set-for-abu-dhabi/
hi
Looks better than what it was but still looks like a mess to me
Hi. How was Greggs?
saw that at the weekend - good idea
Although articles look a lot better now I reckon, for example with this world cup article
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/world_cup_2010/8674024.stm
That's what MotoGP do and it's a good idea to save costs. Plus all the GP2 drivers are in Abu Dhabi for the Asia Series race anyway...
I ended up wandering around a retail park nearby but didn't get anything. Accidentally walked past my house on the way back and ended up at greggs, how about that eh? ;)
It was om nom. I still feel quite unfulfilled today though, such an odd day.
*Needs more Muse?
I agree, everyone is there, the equipment is there.. might as well use it.
Maybe those who go to the GP might stick around to watch testing too.
I dunno. Tis an odd day.
The name 'IRL' is to be dropped. As a CARTist I am pleased. :)
http://www.indystar.com/article/20100511/SPORTS0107/5110348/1217/SPORTS0107
Hahah :)
Correct - it's the 11th ;)
Five Women to qualify for the Indy 500? Including Milka Chocolate?
At last - the name had too much baggage
Yes. Should be fun. Some are saying 38 cars will attempt to qualify.
Today needs more Aerosmith.
Oh and the qualifying format has changed, so instead of 4 days at 6 hours each there are now two days and a knockout session for pole.
Meteor?
Walk this Way.
I don't mind that - in the end pole day was always a bit of a drawn out ant-climax that no one ever really bothered to watch; either on TV or in the grandstands. It's a step at least
I saw a lot of complaints about that. Sounds interesting - Indy is quite drawn out for the modern era. For example - 'Carb Day' :D
Oh no. This doesn't sound good.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/motorsport/formula_one/8671392.stm
How odd...
They are listening and learning at last, and that's good.
no pressure felipe, no pressure
stay cool :)
I read that as "We looked good keeping him after he knocked his head in, now we want Kubica"...
Looks like a case of a misleading headline... It suggests they are looking at him when they actually say they are looking at the car..
Team principal Stefano Domenicali said: "We have to make sure the car is one he feels confident driving. For the first time this weekend it was not the case.
"It is important to go back and see what we have done around Felipe's car."
I hope Kubica doesn't go to Ferrari :(
I think he's suited at Renault. A bit of pace and he'll be like Alonso...
BBC use a misleading headline? Never!
I had always thought that Kimi should have been kept instead of Felipe. But I don't fancy the idea of Kubica in a Ferrari either.
Why not give Fisi another chance?
Ace!
I agree - Kimi actually did well last year: http://f1numbers.wordpress.com/2009/12/31/2009-in-review-driver-classification/
Kimi had a slightly higher average finishing position than Massa.
I agree, they seem to fit very well.
Did anyone else catch the bit during the Spanish race when Felipe lost a bit of his front wing and actually went 0.5 second faster
No one's qualified yet
Nope. But more women is good.
True - especially the likes of de Silvestro and Patrick
I think they might all get in.
I'd say Duno or Beatriz are iffy though
There'll be other dodgy rent-a-rides though. Even Paul Tracy is having a go!
Tracy will get in easy - some the buy-in drives are actually quality drivers this year as opposed to the old guard of Marty Roth or Dennis Vitolo, etc...
GRR Dennis Vitolo!
They are all with good teams, even the newbies, they'll be in.
So it was an instant rimshot for Hamilton then: http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/83530
Bit odd that it's the same wheel as Heikki's
Hello folks.
It's like an instant replay, if you watched it side-by-side.
Weird. Totally different car and driver, yet same circuit, same wheel.
Exactly. The similarity is chilling. And what's more, they were 2 years apart. And with different types of tyre too. Could it be an issue with how the wheel rim is designed?
It has to be some sort of fatigue caused by excessive loading. The question is it design, QC or something else...
I don't want to speculate too much, but I suspect it's a QC issue. It hasn't happened regularly, only on that specific scenario (at least it seems that way). So I'm thinking there's just a blind spot in their stress load testing...
heikki's issues was a 3rd party forgot to lacquer the part.
How do you remember stuff like that?
Never mind remember stuff, I didn't even know that... :D
#f1geek
umm. well it was quite a big deal at the time i recall. *shrugs*
actually, i have it backwards, from autosport:
It has been established that, owing to a process fault during manufacture, the outer clamp surface of the wheel was given a clear lacquer coating. As a consequence of this fault, the clamp load that attached the wheel was not to specification.
so someone lacquered a part that shouldn't have been. be interesting to know if it was a repeated problem because:
Vodafone McLaren Mercedes and the wheel supplier have now established new procedures designed to prevent a re-occurrence of this issue.
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/67211
actually, i blame lou: http://sidepodcast.com/2008/05/10/thermal-imaging/comments/#comment-68650
all I can remember about it is the horrified look on Catherine's face but that may be because I saw it 400 times in Singapore. Thanks Singapore!
I remember talking about it now.
yay!
Funny that the comment is a year ago. On this day...
Can't count, 2 years ago ;)
weird!
is it any wonder we've run out of f1 things to discuss when it keeps repeating itself :)
That sounds like a post to me!
in adding my Rome hotel to my GPS I found there is a McDonalds across the road and I got kind of excited. I'm such a bad tourist.
williams are slow, need to improve. check
massa coming under fire after a poor start to the season. check.
traffic might cause problems during monaco qualifying. check.
everybody thinks it's too early to rule out titles. check.
ooh, are you volunteering?
But, but, but...
Okay then.
:D Hehehehe. That's SO tourist-like.
you can't make another picture of franck though :)
I get ridiculously excited by going into foreign fast food chains and finding unfamiliar things on the menu.
D'oh. Did you see the panic I caused earlier?
ummm, no?
mrschristine: Sidepodcast homepage - recorded for posterity. http://twitpic.com/1mvmv6
Snuff_Smith: @mrschristine I read that and thought "they're pulling the plug". But it was only [email protected] Franck! Thank goodness.
heheheheheh!!!!!!
My bad. :)
Ping: http://sidepodcast.com/2010/05/11/on-this-day-11th-may-2008-speculation-on-mclaren-tyres/
*pokes mr c* Can I ask a very very super duper quick question? Is there php code to allow a user to only upload certain types of file (jpg)?
Holly tweeting. First time ever and probably last. At reims. Peeing down with rain. 6oo miles to go. Have my seat warmer on in lurvely merc.
http://twitter.com/5LiveF1/status/13789815067
Raaiiinnn :)
surely all you need do is check the file name in the php code and make sure it ends with .jpg?
wow.
Needs more Franck, I reckon.
...I've just realised I've already put that in and it's actually doing so anyway
/stupidlukeh
I like you prodding Mr C for no reason though. Keep him awake :)
I <3 Up soundtrack :D :D :D
ow!
15 minutes? That was quick!
ooh you know when you are planning a trip and you say to yourself 'oh I'd quite like to see that, I wonder how far away from my accommodation it is' and you google map it and the answer is 1km? I like those times. Walking distance!
there's a reason why one of us blogs and the other faffs around with the homepage :)
That is why Mr C hates me.
My experience of the Worms games and utilising the prod move in that game makes me an expert prodder :)
oh, so now i'm a worm?
you mock me with your typing.
:D
earthworm
jimmr cWorms are awesome!*
*in the game
**gonna go buy that shovel now to go and dig a bigger hole
oi!
If only we had a photo of Mr C, there'd be a job for you to do :)
earthworm jim was the man!!
Well, the worm.
its ok, we know now that this is him.
:D Mr. C Worm.
humpf
He is never ever going to talk to me again.
#weloveyoureallymrc
#althoughwormsandearthwormjimistotallyawesome
HA!
It actually looks cute.
Hehehehe!
Woooow shiny shiny can charge off my computer!
What with this worm (who looks really cute) and the Panda in the USP hat on Lou's drawing, I think there is a range of Mr C toys being developed ;)
steven linked to a place that makes your 3d designs the other day...
everybody loves android?
http://twitter.com/sidepodcast/
Haha!
:)
The chicanes at monaco have been highered
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/83535
Probably because Felipe Massa decided not to bother with them about 70 times last year ;)
Or a photo of a worm with a Renault hat on
Oh wow you did it already :)
I love the word highered.
I made amazing up songs my ringtone!!!
I'm far too excited by this :D :D :D
Hehehe
Ridiculous.... I hate all those bumps they keep putting in all over the place.
Can I just say - that looks awesome. :D
It took me five minutes to work out what sounds wrong with the word... I should have said raised...
English language is hard :(
better than a rubber post that lasts one lap though, surely?
I guess so. I find the whole thing quite amusing though.
Steeeeeeeeven!!!
It's almost like they want someone to get collected at Swimming Pool and trigger a Safety Car... :P
who'll wreck their undertray first?
ooh cyni... yeah, that's probably the reason.
Much. And waaaay better than the year Monza experimented with tyre stacks and took out loads of cars...
I am never saying raised again. It makes more sense that the opposite of lowered should be highered.
Don't those bumps launch people into the air though....? What if you approach them slightly out of control?
Exactly!!
you'll end up in the barrier.
Heikki vs Tony Fernandes in golf! *cue epic music*
Tony just tweeted it now with a picture of heikki's head.
http://tweetphoto.com/21994084
:D It does have a 50-50 record, though. It triggered SCs when Rosberg did it in 08 and Heikki did it last year (I think?), but no SC was called out when JPM did it in 01...
It is entirely possible to run into them and stay on the ground. Case in point - Vettel last weekend when he went wide at Turn 1...
Okay. Could you previously cut the chicane to give you some time to get in control? Not as an advantage gaining thing, other than the obvious advantage of not being in the barrier....
as lukeh mention, massa used it as his own private shortcut for most of last year's race.
Which I highly approve of it means hearing more from Rob.
Rob was not our driver of the day, for sure.
it's easy to police when it's used to gain a place - just give the place back. it's harder to police when it's (potentially) being used to keep someone behind.
you missed plenty of rob on sunday. you need edited rob highlights.
or a better place on the grid.
Hehehe I remember. Poor Rob "DON'T CUT THE CHICANE!!!"
"No Felipe, go right, then go left. Straight over it is gonna get you fined, lad"
I missed Rob? No one told me!
That should be policeable - just delete the laptime from the official chart. But I do see your point.
so much Rob that Steven Roy voted him driver of the day.
WHAT? Well now I have to watch the replay.
webber wins. oops.
The best comment was the one when Massa lost part of his front wing & went faster :)
Lewis was my annoying driver of the day because I had to change the podium graphics in my blog entry right at the last minute
*shakes fist*
you can't watch a whole replay of barcelona just for rob?
:( :( :(
But but but, that was such a shame!!!
You could fast forward until you see the radio sign on the screen then listen to those bits on their own.
Am I likely to have software on my computer that's gonna let me cut down the length of an audio file?
Siderobcast?
ooh, and filter the comments.
What you need is one of those tape annotator people Mr C was talking about. They'd tell you where to look!
rob logger
:D
I don't know but there are apps for it in Android Market. Not tried it but I know there's one called Ringdroid
Assuming it's to produce a ringtone for your shiny new phone.
:D
So I have a Rob logger and someone to edit Rob highlights for me. This is getting quite expensive!
Some Franck stuff: http://iheartfranck.com/2010/05/11/video-from-spa/
Look at the first video!
Lewis says about his new lid: "“In addition, I’ll also be wearing a specially painted helmet for the occasion. When you see it, you’ll know why I’ll be hoping for it to swing the odds in my favour!”"
Grrr I do not like being teased, this is like the new garage all over again.
Don't forget the Rob blogger.
It's gonna have a swing from a park built on top, I just know it.
That or it'll be the silver coloured pasta shapes I was expecting heikki to have in comparion to Lewis' diamond things last year
love it when people agree credit notes... vindication, I was right
i'll take anything that isn't more diamonds
Is it for 30p?
Ooh, I just changed the theme. That Bueno one is rather funky.
I heart the Wordpress Theme team. They're doing ace work.
That is a really nice theme. Also, you are now basically shouting at everyone how you feel about Franck :D
They've definitely stepped it up in recent weeks
Unfortunately we had to pay that one :(
ah-ha, and that header matches your blog header because...?
I'm confused!
Rrrrubbish.
Oh but I didn't get to send my fax
Which blog header?
your "smarter" header.
Erm... are you talking about fonts again?
we had this conversation on sunday!
you used haettenschweiler (but lower case), which is similar to the web-safe font impact. which iheartfranck uses (in uppercase). see?
Right, sorry, I didn't realise it was a pop quiz!!
I went for Impact in the end so they are the same... for a week.
oh no! i couldn't tell :(
Although it doesn't distinguish blockquotes in the comments which is poor.
so i see. there are other good ones though?
I work in accounts and a company messed up an invoice (again) but they usually like to disagree with us.
I am investigating. Only the best for FKM.
fm
fKm
hmm
Ah I see :D
If Kelloggs can go bragging about their Special K I don't see why Christine can't have her own
Have gone back to the old one.
heheheheh
Hush up, Jim.

Awww, now I feel bad. I make a rubbish bully.
hehe.
am still kicking myself for impact fail: http://www.typophile.com/forums/messages/30/55596.gif
You've been learning this stuff for what, a week? Plus they are exactly the same. If you did get it right, I would have to hit you with a stick.
http://twitter.com/RacecarEngineer/statuses/13794110441
I am very intrigued
That wouldn't be an impact fail
:) :) :) :)
Woah. Christine is famous.
thats christine from the internet for you.
I doubt it. Nine times out of ten, I'm being a secretary for Mr C :)
she doesn't even read it. bah!
Well we all know how famous Mr. C is - he even has his own merchandise. ;)
Hehehe.
Am I supposed to know their email address?
well... i have it. but you've been quite mean to me.
dm?
Darn it. We do keep trying to tell you that Earthworm Jim is cool.
Yea, I try not to do that :)
He's so cool they're bringing his megadrive game back to the xbox 360 this month all rehanced and HD'd up.
That's how cool he is.
I've been singing the song from the cartoon to myself all evening.
Oooh how comes?
Can't get my head round it. You have to follow them, have to follow you, doesn't always work, drop down list is nonsense.
Ages ago, Mr C and 5live tried to have some kind of DM conversation and it ended up going through me and I got very mad at Twitter.
booo
*shakes fist at twitter*
rehanced?
Anyways, have sent mail. I wonder what the chances are of the thing they have for me being Franck.
They're giving you Franck?
One can only hope.
That would be epic. Where would you put him?
Well, I was saving the bath for an otter, and there's space in the living room for a panda. So I guess in the kitchen.
*packs bags in preparation*
franck can cook?
I would bet any money that he can cook better than you can.
Awwww bless :)
He strikes me as someone who can cook, so good choice!
Evening.
I'm sitting on my balcony looking over a golf course in the evening sun after running 4km through parkland, drinking a beer and cooking me some pasta. I love my new flat!
Evening folks
you may have a balcony, but I have a chair!!
Sounds pretty good.
I have a small prison-cell-esq room
So nerr :P
So did I when I was at uni ;)
that's nothing compared to what my landlord considers a "good sizeable room"
There's probably a rude joke in there somewhere but I won't go there ;)
enough of that young man - we don't take that kind kind of folly well in the ghetto
There's a rude joke in everything, if you possess the skills!
if anyone's interested - attention Christine :) - two of of the female entrants for this year's Indy500 (Sarah Fisher and Ana Beatriz) were on Trackside last night... an interesting listen
woops - here's the link
http://www.1070thefan.com/trackside/podcast.aspx
Oh wow that sounds awesome. I want a balcony and a golf course.
You should speak to Nick :P
I don't want one in a desert
Hmmm I don't know what to suggest then!
How about one in a dessert?
Woohoo I want more people to call me!
I love amazing UP ringtone :D
Guys,
How do I run .Jar files?
Small course..
I've heard a teatowel helps
:D
Evening all
Have you read this?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JAR_(file_format)
Evening
Volvo fail
http://uk.cars.yahoo.com/11052010/36/volvo-auto-brake-fails-during-demo-0.html
Yep. Still completely lost :(
I have never heard of a .jar file so I think you need one of the computer geniuses.
Isn't it just like a zip file? I think you need to find an extractor programme.
Zool. Who remembers it?
Hi guys, how be we this fine evening...
A quick search for .jar extractor suggests there are loads of them
Hello
Like a RAR or ZIP but for Java.
Never heard of it
Hi Steven. :)

For an education young sir. ;)
RG might hate me for saying this, but he's my team leader in a league we both run in.
Seems a little quiet here, so I'll post a pic that Lou might enjoy. :)

Hi Lou
Are you working or can I mention Heston is on?
am having an evening off tonight... i didn't get to sleep till 4... was woken at 6.. so my brain is officially mush :) lol will catch heston's reply i forgot :( i did get my heston fix yesterday though :)
A night off will do you good. I still have to catch his show from last week but this week's so far is weird.
i did nearly fall asleep in the common room today. so even though i should be getting a bit of work done i'm having to just stop for the evening. i've felt awful all day!
Weird in a normal Heston way? or more so?.. hehe last weeks was awesome!
He is doing the 1980s. So far he has made his own money with his head on it, made a huge breville toaster and made champagne from Blue Nun and a sodastream
hehehehehehe! love it!! :D
Now he is cooking lobster thermidor in a coffee percolator. I would love to see the ideas he threw out to arrive at the things he does.
omg you'll love last week's! he tried to recreate a pot noodle :D and originally wanted to get them to make their own noodles using play dough toys! :)
It beats me how someone who comes across as being so sensible can be so mental. I wonder what it is like to eat at his restaurant.
i would love to eat at his restaurant, but i doubt he does many dishes that i would eat... I've always argued that he isn't really a chef and is more of an artist/chemist.
Will be closing the poll soon, so if you haven't voted: http://smarterthanyouraverage.com/2010/05/10/life-in-the-fast-lane-ii-part-7/
Hey everyone,
Is Mr C about this evening?
You will not believe what he just tried to do with a Vienetta
hehe! i can't wait to watch this next episode now.
*waves*
Sir,
I shall be finished this guest post in a while - where does one send it too?
On that note, I have submitted the Daily and I am cream crackered after my run. Good night!
if you could send it to both [email protected] and [email protected] there's a pretty good chance one of us will get it, cheers.
no-one buddy. see you.
noooo
that was meant to say NICE-ONE
grand job - shall knock it on in a while
ooooh c**p. what a typo. gavin i am sooo sorry!
*cries*
It doesn't actually make sense the original way you wrote it, so I wouldn't worry. We know you can't speak English.
*hugs for Mr C since he seems probably as tired as me*
Night
mans writes daily. man gets insulted. yikes, i'll go away again.
English as a 2nd language, F1 as the mother tongue?
I now feel very industrious because I've just e-mailed Sidepodcast Towers my guest post for the "On This Day" series.
Well done. I go for one in about 8 hours. Should probably head to bed now, but CBA!
cooooool. thank you alia.
*checks for typos*
code is my mother tongue.
hehehe!
am having a bad day, earlier lukeh called me a worm :(
Of course it is...... but typos in that don't necessarily make a difference unless it's something ridiculous like C++, right? Right?
That's not so bad. Those things can burrow like soil's going outta fashion!
a compiler checks and tells me where i went wrong.
Not just any old worm! :P
in fairness, it was quite a cute worm.
mr. c - not just any old worm
he what?! why?... what did you do?
also reading through the comments i got very confused... you blamed me for something that i don't understand...
Doesn't say where the variables are wrong though. If you make one typo, you have to make it every time. That can hurt!
cooooool. thank you alia.
*checks for typos* {Comment #722}
There are none in what you wrote there :)
ahh yeah. my variables are always splet wrongly.
i'm going to read through the comments again.....
I was going to write an on this day post for the 8th of May but then I realised I already had

how cool!
code is my mother tongue. {Comment #723}
Code is your mother tongue; you are also fluent in F1, techspeak, podcastian and the distinct variant of Sidepodcastian. Everyone raves about Nico Rosberg's multilingualism but he's fluent in four languages which is the same as you are :)
My favourites are 13 and 32

How lazy
a compiler checks and tells me where i went wrong. {Comment #728}
My browser tells me when I spell English wrong (sometimes). Unfortunately it's no use on the topic of substitutions for words that are in the dictionary but make no sense in context. There should be an automatic compiler for English...
how cool!
How lazy {Comment #741}
Given how long it is I think we ought to let you off and just re-emphasise the brilliant entry you've already done for that date...
true story.
That is an awesome article Steven.
Right, am off to bed. Night folks, play safe! :)
Glad you liked it
Good night
ehehehehehehehehehe!!!! - http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q127/Lukehmuse/mrc.jpg
ehehehehehehe!!!! :D
:D
Reminds me of one of the first Suzuka races. Some journalist spotted a group of guys all wearing idential jackets and on the back of them they had written in English "Racing Worms". He asked why and was told that they had learned in English classes that someone who liked books was a bookworm and since they liked racing......
Ping: http://sidepodcast.com/2010/05/11/on-this-day-11th-may-2008-fisi-completes-a-collision-hat-trick/
awww no.. Christine is beating me in fantasy racers... but alot :(
How is that even possible?
i don't know... i blame Timo. I'm beating mr c though :D
I blame stupid Hamilton crashing out on the last lap!!!
grrr!
jason from 5live:
Just stopped in Monaco! Left Oxford at 945am this morning...
wow
I've spent 10 hours working on this code today and I think I a going to have a mental breakdown if I see another stupid error
the other mclaren driver is much more reliable... ;)
awww. i feel the same about the homepage. can i help?

It wasn't worth going home from Barcelona
i've been telling you for years now to have Jenson in your team!! yet you have felipe!
I feel so guilty always asking... it's probably very annoying...
It's something to do with uploading... whenever I try I just get this...
'Warning: move_uploaded_file() [function.move-uploaded-file]: Unable to move '/tmp/phpEl3mzB' to (directory)'
have been in the file manager and altered the permissions to 777. I had a far simpler uploading system working earlier but that one had no file checks, size checks, etc etc. This version now just hates me and I'm a little sick of seeing that error :(
wow!!! i wondered why you had been quiet today. :( just think.. it's nearly over! :)
oi, lou, no blaming of the timo
We've done a lot of trouble shooting but progress has been slow for the uploading thing ive been working on which is horribly frustrating. The site is live now but I'm far too scared to share the link whilst we're editing it live...
Maybe when it's done next week hehe.
oooppppssss. sorry R.G... he is the weak link in my team though :(
*runs*
you kidding, i love it.
i'll try and repeat. it might be because you're running on windows.
Yeah, that's almost definitely the problem :)
what's the name of the folder you're moving too?
:)
13 hours is quick... I've done Montpellier to Calais in 12 hours and that was a push, with no channel crossing..

My guess is that Ant did a fair bit of the driving and they'd prefer the police not to know exactly how quick they were going.
jason did this one by himself i think. holly was a passenger, but ant's arriving by plane later.
This is the line it's pointing out:
if (move_uploaded_file($_FILES['uploadedfile'],[tmp_name] "images/memories/$id/".$new_file_name)) {
The various $ thingies are all predefined and work elsewhere... the only thing thats standing out for me is that tmp_name thing because in all honest I'm not sure what that's doing...
can anyone help with this tweet:
@koookiez: Do you know when gp2 will be shown? Is it live on eurosport? Im rather lost thanks
Oops there is a comma after the tmp brackets, I'm not sure why it's not there on that...

That was a surprise. Look out for the ash cloud because we don't want Ant to be denied his place in the commentary booth on Thursday!
It is sometimes live on Eurosport. Except when it isn't. We are talking about Eurosport... :)
If it's drivable in that time then he'll definitely drive!
I mean Spain wasn't live, they were showing cycling and somethign else, but most of the time it is
Some Monaco kerbs have been raised this year. That should cause a few problems
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/83535
am confused. the command should be:
move_uploaded_file($file, "$folderdir/$file");
how many commas do you have in there?
I don't know if this site will help http://www.livesportontv.com/motor-sports/gp2-series/2nd-round-monaco-1st-race-38186 Looks like it's on Eurosport 2
on my code I have a comma after the [temp_pmr] bit as well, it just didn't paste it in my comment :S
ooh, ta.
*[tmp_name]
can you tell im tired :(
Ah I forgot about that site
oh good. ok, can you print this out to the page and make sure it's a valid path?
echo "images/memories/$id/".$new_file_name;
it might need to start with a forward slash, or you might not be located where you think you are.
run this to make sure your base directory is where you think it is:
echo getcwd();
Okay dokay
right time for me to sleep, night all! xx
night lou
oh and Lukeh... i'm by no means an expert but please don't stay up all night coding if it's driving you bananas.. fresh eyes in the morning might help. xx
Night Lou
what about me?
same goes for you ;) *disapears*
;)
I'm sorry but I now totally empathise with Mr C. But I'll try not to. Night ;) xx
Although I quite like php. Far more so than java and c++ and all that jazz, icky.
Mr C + Christine,
My guest post hath been sent to your respective inbox's
:)
ahh your a star. all received. just finishing up homepage adjustments, and i shall be right on it sir,
Oh and by the way, I just noticed the word count came 1234 words!!
How good am I?
;)
that's insane!
A sign of awesomeness :P

Cool!
Joe needs wifi advice :)
http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2010/05/11/sorry/
he needs to buy a new mac? ooouch.
I'm not sure that would help with bad wifi signals
Surely any reasonably recent computer of any flavour should work most places though?
if his wifi is dead, what else he going to do?
he uses macs. it's not simple just to buy a pc. none of his apps will work.
Depends how old it is. I always had wifi problems with my old Macbook. Not sure if the newer ones are better
I wasn't referring to a new one, just whatever he has now should still work unless he's damaged the internal wifi
my assumption was it had given up. it shouldn't just stop working, there have been no driver updates from apple in ages.
I thought Macs were supposed to be perfect.
Actually I'm surprised he relies on Wifi. Is there no good 3G telecom provider all through Europe?
maybe he had a wine incident too?
maybe but we've had flyaway races until now.
In my very limited experience they are quite good but a bit pricey
:D
True, although I think he is talking about the past week. I was assuming he meant he couldn't get coverage. I could be wrong. Does t-Mobile give good 3G coverage?
That does surprise me. I could get about 3 or 4GB per month 3G for about $40 now. Plenty for mobile laptop work.
but not between countries?
woohoo! after 11 hours or so i have done what i set out to do and have uploading with restrictions and whatnot working, yay!
ooh, what was the issue?
No. I just assumed that sort of thing would be worked out in Europe by now. Guess not?
How is that going to be enough for your computer though? I'm not very savvy with stuff like this but I looked at dongles to cover a period of non-internetness while moving and stuff. The price for sensible bandwidth makes me choke!
Hah. No. Not even close!
sadly not.
something to do with the temporary storage, earlier in the code it had been defined as something else for some reason.
And I did have one too many commas as well on that line, oops... but it works now, yay! I could have settled for the really simple uploadingI had working a few hours ago but that could have left it easily abused and whatnot, so much happier knowing this version now works :)
I honestly have no idea what I could get but it would be much more to take a UK 3G plan to France, Spain, etc. I'm assuming the French 3G plans are the same.
congrats sir.
Nice one
Now we have that working the finish line horizon is approaching :) means we can start working on image galleries which will be a main part of the site
That is crazy. So much for the EU.
Even though the same companies are operating in these countries, they still regard it as roaming and charge accordingly.
I just always assumed Europe would have better plans and coverage than here in Oz. Maybe not. I could get away with a 3G dongle for everything other than downloading media content, for a good price.
It possibly does domestically in each country. Just not between them.
Hehe, awesome. The F1 drivers won the traditional monaco football match :)
right folks,
i'm off to bed - have fun
:)
night
Night leigh!
Adam Cooper is in Monaco
http://twitpic.com/1n0vmt
:)
And he has a Lamborghini
That is totally how I would do a lap of Monaco ;-)
now, where is that lottery ticket.....?
He says it is a mate's.. lucky guy.
Friday's Euromillions jackpot is something like £86 million. That would do
I could afford the fuel as well !
