Wakey wakey. Still with us aren't you, even after the Spanish Grand Prix? Please say you are. That wasn't the greatest of spectacles, but hey, lets not complain too much, at least Kamui Kobayashi and Timo Glock remembered what the chequered flag looks like (and about time too). And now, the bulletpoints:

  • As mentioned, a race in Catalunya took place. And I'm sure you are aware of my look at the new teams and Lukeh's snazzy bitesize race review. But if you have some spare time in your day (I bet you do as well), check out Leigh's lengthy review of the entire weekend. Its insanely long and I don't blame him for the fact his fingers hurt after all the typing
  • Mr Jon Waldock has a nice little post up on why there are too many feeder series which lead up into F1, and how Moto GP has got it spot on. Jon raises quite a few good points so do check it out.
  • And, well, I couldn't go this long without mentioning it. No, its not that Spurs have reached the Champions League, but that our very own Lukeh has been talking to the 2009 FIA President Candidate, Ari Vatanen. Yes, the exact same Ari Vatanen who won the 1981 World Rally Championship and lost out to Jean Todt to become the new FIA President. Now, that is without a doubt, totally fantastic. He's also saying there might be a chance to go to the 2011 Monaco Grand Prix, you lucky... ;)

So, another week, one more week before the exams really start to kick in for me. Oh yes, totally fan-tas-tic. And, one week till Monaco, it will be mayhem, you have my word for it.

Have a nice Monday.

    Which model Jeremy?

    I went with the 16GB WiFi + 3G

I don't need the extra space but the small price gap between each model makes it so tempting. Imagine carrying around all the F1 races for the past 2 years :-)

For the last two races, I have set my iPod Nano to record the audio of the noises I make while watching a Grand Prix. The quality of the recording isn't great, but it's incredibly funny to listen to (even if I do say so myself). Lot's of 'ooh' and 'aah' noises. A few 'Go Lewis' and 'Go Mark Webber' calls last night :-)

I am pretty certain Andrew Benson saw a different race yesterday: http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/andrewbenson/2010/05/webber.html

The Spanish Grand Prix was not as bad a race as many had feared, although it was certainly a bit of a comedown after the highs of Australia and China.

    and

It seems likely that this year's Red Bull, the RB6, will go down in history as one of the greatest cars produced by one of the most brilliant designers in the history of Formula 1.

The Spanish Grand Prix was not as bad a race as many had feared, although it was certainly a bit of a comedown after the highs of Australia and China.

It was better than Bahrain but only just. Easily the 4th worst of the five we've had though.

It seems likely that this year's Red Bull, the RB6, will go down in history as one of the greatest cars produced by one of the most brilliant designers in the history of Formula 1.

I think that's a valid argument. 'Great' cars are ones that beat the rest of the field hands down and look great doing it, and it fits those descriptions IMO.

  • Christine10/05/2010 at 09:12

Crofty has weighed in on it: As for the Spain race I thought it wasn't bad for Barcelona. Plenty to talk about, could have been much worse

I am not budging with my D. ;)

  • Leigh O'Gorman10/05/2010 at 09:15

I didn’t think it was too bad, but it only garnered a 2 out of 5 from me – the first half was OK (especially the Schuey/Button battle), but it tailed off rather badly in the second-half.

One thing’s for certain, the GP2 race showed that you can pass at the circuit.

  • RubberGoat10/05/2010 at 09:15

It was better than Bahrain but only just. Easily the 4th worst of the five we've had though.

James Allen's description is best, but I liken it to going to the Dentist for a root canal and being told you only need a filling – we were expecting a very dull race and we got a race that wasn’t terribly exciting instead.

I think that's a valid argument. 'Great' cars are ones that beat the rest of the field hands down and look great doing it, and it fits those descriptions IMO.

Great cars are also ones that are not fragile in my opinion. I think it's important. That's why the Lotus 78 is not as well-liked as the 79. Both were revolutionary Ground Effect cars, both were winners and smashed the opposition, yet the 79 was a lot more reliable.

A truly great car ticks all the boxes. The RB6 is a compromise. I suspect it's only fast because they push the limits too far over breaking points and take risks where the other teams don't.

  • Pat W10/05/2010 at 09:15

There was plenty to talk about. Just that not all of the talking points were related to the action. For example, Hamilton's retirement shouldn't be a race highlight in my view.

All you have to do it

    * Nod agreeingly when English fans criticise their performance

    * When asked about the team choice, just reply 'what was Capello thinking?!'

    * Agree when English fans say this will be their year (they always say it's their year but it never is)

    You're fine. Tell us more.

I want you to tell me why I want one ;)

    Want: it's shiny

Need: you don't if you have a netbook

  • Christine10/05/2010 at 10:48

    Want: it's shiny

What have you been using it for so far?

    Want: it's shiny

Need: you don't if you have a netbook

What if I have two netbooks, none of which are shiny?

  • Bassano10/05/2010 at 10:52

    You're fine. Tell us more.

    Gorgeous screen

Surprisingly easy to type on [no external keyboard yet]

Twitter, BBC News & Photo apps are wonderful

Looking forward to Official Live Time for Monaco

[May be a few Doohickey issues to iron out in time

    #SorryMrC]

  • Bassano10/05/2010 at 10:54

What have you been using it for so far?

Taking it to work today after I sync'd my photos. Have been exploring mostly, was quite tired when I got home last night

Have loaded an HD TV episode to watch tonight, pretty decent sound from external speaker

  • Bassano10/05/2010 at 10:55

Nooo it's fine. I want shiny shiny.

  • Bassano10/05/2010 at 11:01

Is it the wi-fi or the 3G one?

I went for WiFi for two reasons. Mostly, I'll be using it at home

I also have enough 3G coverage with my phone and don't have to need to pay for a data plan

Our company has those silly car flags with our branding on for a marketing promotion thing. It keeps causing World Cup conversations.

You could probably activate it in store and update it on another machine now and then.

Apparently there's a decent market for the Silver Surfers who struggle with IT

    No OS navigation issues

I think the tablet form will all but kill netbooks

I read that sales in the last 2 quarters are way down alreadY, thought to be partly due to iPad rumours

Shame HP cancelled their project but with their purchase of Palm, they may be re-working it for a mobile OS [Palm's WebOS is highly rated]

I really think there's a market to replace a netbook with a tablet of some sort - I mean, I only use mine lightly and I reckon the iPad could easily do most of the stuff it does...

You should see the spreadsheet I have been asked to modify for a World Cup Game Picker: http://drop.io...ng-scorecard-gcb-xlsx

    I can't open it

  • RubberGoat10/05/2010 at 11:15

OK, so normally I get quite a few page hits on the weekend of a Grand Prix, even if I am late in posting. Today I have the same as last week. Is this a sign of indifference towards the race?

Nope. Even though I posted my Malaysia posts a week after the race, I still got a satisfactory amount of page hits.

What about you guys? Have you noticed a drop-off? I have noticed fewer comments during the live sessions (or is that just me)?

  • Jon Waldock10/05/2010 at 11:25

What about you guys? Have you noticed a drop-off? I have noticed fewer comments during the live sessions (or is that just me)?

Maybe it is just F1, until it gets good again I guess people aren't as bothered about the ins and outs of the race.

  • RubberGoat10/05/2010 at 11:28

Maybe. I'm not doing it for the page hits, I'm doing it because I enjoy it and I know other people do too. But I just noticed the lack of page hits - and another thing too - less links from the P-F1 and AUTOSPORT forums.

I would conclude that people were not interested enough in this Grand Prix to bother talking about it?

  • Christine10/05/2010 at 11:28

If you look at the actual number of comments on our live thread, it's been going down all season.

I thought so. I just got a despondent SMS from Uncle Goat - you know, the Ferrari fan I stayed with at Easter. He doesn't sound too happy either!

me personally I enjoy race better when I focus on watching it instead of commenting and tweeting. race on one screen, live timing and twitter on another split screen (but Twitter to see the tweets from the teams rather than reading "A crashed" "B spun off" :-) ) .

last year I didn't like having twitter open because it was just tweets from fans and things that didn't really add much to my enjoyment, whereas this year I quite like having it open because I like getting tweets direct from the teams.

A loooong time ago, Mr C said something on the podcast along the lines of the best thing about live commenting was the before stuff. Gearing up for the racing, finding out who is having nachos, where in the world everyone is. Once the racing is on, it's not necessarily about the number of comments but just knowing there are other people out there, watching with you.

I recently whittled my Twitter followers down and it makes all the difference. Now I can actually go back each morning and catch up where I left off. Impossible previously.

I myself lost the motivation to blog. The site has been on autopilot for months and would have been dead already if not for the prediction game and all the people playing. But chances for the site to make it past 2010 are slim. I had few long breaks since January and exactly nothing has happened. I haven't missed it a bit, in fact I felt liberated :-) The less time I spend on the blog the more I enjoy F1 :-)

I also have to admit that since the pros came in and started to blog I almost stopped reading the other blogs. Very much the only place I still come to is here, mainly because of the community. I just don't comment much during the F1 action :-)

that's interesting, hadn't thought of that. for me, joe's blog replaced grandprix.com, james' site is new, but came at a time when ed gorman cut back. which other pro's blog regularly?

hard to say if regularly but Adam Cooper is there, Will Buxton. some have blogs, some just columns, but with Twitter is easy to find them once the articles are out

I will do. :) It is only the local water company and nobody likes them anyway. We paid it by cheque and I wrote the pence figure wrongly... so they sent us a fax which I'm sure will turn up by letter too. Utter madness

I agree. I used to be a fan of the Sopranos and bought a catchup guide for series 1-3 (it was very good, in fact).

They claimed that it was "...Totally unofficial - so if an episode sucked, we will tell you so!"

  • me10/05/2010 at 12:12

well that is matter of opinion. I still find F1 exciting and I tend to agree with Joe on that one :-)

fair enough. i think a fan is going to call f1 boring, when they find it boring. i think a journalist is going to claim that "not every race can be a classic". and they'll easily keep that up all year long if they have to.

ultimately a mix of both is ideal. having said that, doohickey has put me off blogging.

I used to be subscribed to lots but I found myself skimming through them and not giving them the justice they deserve. I did really love your posts on the fuel analysis last year but the other things don't interest me so much.

As you can tell from those guest posts that are in the pipeline....one day....and the state of my own blog, I'm not a real big blog person.

That's a fair comment. I must say that a combination of being too busy and being a little disinterested in the races has combined so I have only done my regular posts - and the change in the rules has removed a lot of analysis from them unfortunately.

I will write something - I have an idea for this race, but again, I have no time this week!

  • F1Wolf10/05/2010 at 12:16

fair enough. i think a fan is going to call f1 boring, when they find it boring. i think a journalist is going to claim that "not every race can be a classic". and they'll easily keep that up all year long if they have to.

and thanks to the fact the pros have blogs these days fans can tell them what they think :-)

  • me10/05/2010 at 12:17

Blog when you WANT to, not when you HAVE to. Makes a huge difference :)

the difference between now and before:

before - I had idea for the post I worked on it

now - I have idea for the post, I even have all worked out in my mind, but I keep putting it away until the idea becomes obsolete :-)

  • Amy10/05/2010 at 12:20

    I myself lost the motivation to blog. The site has been on autopilot for months and would have been dead already if not for the prediction game and all the people playing. But chances for the site to make it past 2010 are slim. I had few long breaks since January and exactly nothing has happened. I haven't missed it a bit, in fact I felt liberated :-) The less time I spend on the blog the more I enjoy F1 :-) {Comment #170}

2010 has been pretty tough for me as a blogger. It seems like half the F1 internet has shut down and the rest has become a pure echo chamber. It feels like we're being told less about F1 than in previous years. In such an environment it's difficult to come up with new stuff - for example I've made the grand total of one blog entry in May so far.

In fact it's got to the point that even though I really really want to write about the LMS race I saw yesterday, the creativity drain is so bad that I'm struggling to string words together to make the entry happen :( (and not feeling able to blog or even find inspirational F1 blogs by other people has definitely had a negative impact on my F1 viewing experience). I feel like I need to solve this problem in order to ensure my long-term ability to watch F1 as more than a opportunity to shout "Go Force India!" at the screen, but have no idea how.

Definitely. I see this as a combination of:

    - Slow news year (see ping, above!)

    - Established bloggers running out of steam, or finding that changing personal circumstances reduce their opportunities to blog

    - Newspapers/magazines cutting budgets, so less money in the pot to pay for original content (either by sending full-time correspondents or buying in from freelancers); agency copy used instead, or cut-and-pasted by cheap and inexperienced office-based staff

    – New websites calling themselves blogs, but actually trying to pass themselves off as news services (and acting as GMM echo chambers while doing so). See: F1 Times, Formula1Blogger, et al

so if f1 is dreadfully boring right now. maybe we need some f1 nostalgia to keep us interested?

not sure what, but maybe something like "this time x years ago, this happened in f1". we all pick an event from early may in our chosen year and blog why it was cool / not cool?

The trouble is I am interested in F1 and have found all the races except Bahrain worth watching - as alluded to at the end of my previous comment, I even have ideas (albeit not necessarily F1 ones) - but getting them written in the face of general apathy is difficult. To be honest, it was easier back in 2006 when I had an audience of four interested people...

start another blog and don't tell anyone where it is. problem solved.

  • Leigh O'Gorman10/05/2010 at 14:00

    it is?

yep - it's a part of the site called reflections where upon i look back at previous seasons and write posts on the individual races while also focussing on specific drivers / teams / tracks - i'm currently working the 1999 CART season and will do the 1979 F1 season afterwards

I'd agree with you that all of those are factors. Admittedly I hadn't noticed the latter one (F1B's been doing what it's been doing for ages and I've managed to miss most of the others because I prefer the original GMM echo chamber at Yahoo!) but I've certainly spotted the other three and I can see how the fourth wouldn't help either.

Considering how much trouble I have finding any platform on which I can blog (and the two I've found that work - and already use - don't allow multiple blogs) that isn't really an option for me either :(

  • Leigh O'Gorman10/05/2010 at 14:03

for example, 1999 cart has the slow downfall of al unser jr and michael andretti, the rise of montoya and franchitti and the sad loss of both greg moore and gonzalo rodriguez, as well as tales of roberto moreno super-subbing for mark blundell

    Great idea.

On Thursday it will be precisely 60 years since the first World Championship Grand Prix at Silverstone. Petrol was still rationed at the time and the race was held on a Saturday because Sunday was still a ‘day of rest’. Only three cars finished on the lead lap, and they were two laps ahead of the people in fourth and fifth.

  • Amy10/05/2010 at 14:28

amy: take us back to day one. which day was that and how did the day start?

oooh it was Wednesday and I was at work. Then I went to the behind the scenes tour and skipped most of it because I was only there for the driver interviews. The published list of who would be there was wrong, so there was Unexpected Finn, which is the best kind. They ended up having Sutil, Liuzzi, Kobayashi, de la Rosa, Tweeting Kovalainen, Hulkenburg, Barrichello and Buemi.

Then Pamela tapped me on the shoulder and said hi, then I met Paul and we went to have dinner at $12 steak night, where we met Jeremy and his luggage. Sidepodcastfriends, assemble!

(I really do have briefs of all these days written down so I don't forget things, I just struggle to actually make them into posts :( )

it doesn't have to be concise piece of writing though.

you could call the series "amy's gp diary", or similar, and then make each post like a days entry. brief notes, scrapbook pictures and rough timing etc.

oooh. That makes it sound easy. That makes me think I could even handle doing it for more races, if other races turn out to be as epic as Melbourne. Singapore and Monza could well be "Friday: sat in my seat and watched cars. Saturday: ditto. Sunday: ditto" :D

Am getting the 'Warning: Cannot modify header information - headers already sent by' message again (got it last week with something else with but got that fixed) this one doesn't like going away though...

As far as I know you can't have php code before using such a thing right? Someone ahs suggested using something called

    ob_start; (header); (ob)_flush;

but I've not used that before...

  • Lukeh10/05/2010 at 16:55

    Obviously the header code in that would be header("location: soandso.php");

  • me10/05/2010 at 16:55

    well knock me sideways:

In recent years, McLaren has placed diamonds on its Formula 1 cars, encrusted either on its drivers' helmets or on the cars' steering wheels.

However, this year's race will feature a changed helmet pattern for the 2008 World Champion, although the specific differences are yet to be revealed.

they can't possibly have come up with something new? also, no jenson?

you can, you just can't have php code that writes html output before calling it.

if headers have already been sent, it means you're either trying to write to a cookie, or display something on screen before calling the redirect?

It will only be bad for you if you inhale it or swallow. Oh and if you get it in your eyes, ears etc. So long as it is on the outside of your body you should be fine. It is nasty abrasive material so if it gets inside you it is bad. Bits of you will start sounding like you camera lense

Everyone should listen to the archers! Christine seems hardcore though... I'm more of a casual observer.

I don't do soaps, and I spend enough time in a farming atmosphere. It's odd but I hanker for dramas set in cities.. One person's life is another's escapism I suppose.

I think that sums it up really well. I grew up in a small town and hated it so I moved away and was terribly homesick, really missed the country. Now I'm back and I don't like it again.. Actually it isn't so much the place as the people but that's another thing.

  • Christine10/05/2010 at 19:39

Derren Brown is on Channel 4 doing a thing with psychics. He is following them and watching what they are doing. One of them challenged him to do the next person and looked absolutely gutted as he got point after point right.

  • Jon Waldock10/05/2010 at 22:41

Evening all, I need your help on something.

Just floating an idea around. As some of you know I want to do some work experience at the end of this term to gain more experience, well it's fair to say I haven't had a great response so I've been thinking of doing something slightly different... something I like to call "12 days of Motorsport".

The idea is that from probably 31st May until the following Friday, I shoot all around the country (although in reality more likely just the south of the country) reporting on different motorsport "things", so on the first mondays there is the first event of a new series called "Formula Academy" at Snett, I'd interview lots of drivers, write about the series etc which would be day 1. Day 2 (tuesday) i may shoot off to the Palmerdrome and talk to some people about FPA and F2 and how that all works etc.

So, 2 questions, what do you think? and if i did it, what kinds of things (in terms of content but also in terms of media used) would you want to see? all comments helpful!

  • me10/05/2010 at 22:42

No, but I like their new default.

sounds good, but is the calendar busy enough?

  • Jon Waldock10/05/2010 at 22:43

sounds good, but is the calendar busy enough?

in terms of race events no but thats not necessarily a bad thing, it dosent need to be just events that i cover. one day may be going to see a teams factory, the next interviewing a driver etc.

  • paul10/05/2010 at 22:46

So, 2 questions, what do you think? and if i did it, what kinds of things (in terms of content but also in terms of media used) would you want to see? all comments helpful!

Well that opens a can of worms.

Um, might be interesting to get the driver point of view on all these minor categories, and how they pick a path. Also, how they can get sponsorship with that confusion.

Are they planning a career or just doing the one series.

There was an interesting interview with Riciardo or however you spell it on Aussie TV. It's fine i you have Red Bull backing, but what are these other guys doing?

  • Bassano10/05/2010 at 22:53

    absolutely. always.

I was thinking of an F1 Timing App follow up for SPC and a user's experience piece for MFC

    Ideally before International launch [May28th]

  • Alison10/05/2010 at 22:54

if your machine isn't booting, you could have big issues. what's on screen?

It's booted up with normal screen. The problem is that I was installing display driver updates. The computer crashed half way through. I rebooted it but obviously the display isn't in the ideal state at the moment....

  • Bassano10/05/2010 at 22:54

I explained to Lou last night that it was the law that you had to deliver the punchline if someone gives you a feed

    I concur

By this I mean the text is all huge, and all the graphics are very blocky. The display has all the normal stuff on it though. It's giving me a headache to look at it though. There's only about 3 colours.

I've never heard that but you never know with him

  • Jon Waldock10/05/2010 at 22:56

Sounds busy. If you're sure you can think of enough things and have time enough in the day to make some content out of it then it may be worth it but I really don't know what a prospective employer in the field would want

I think that if I can't get some proper w/e then I wont be too bothered about the lack of employee-friendly goodys. I would probably only go ahead if i had it 90% full when i started

  • me10/05/2010 at 22:56

sounds ace. you'll need to provide some screenshots, if that's okay, because we won't be able to make any until after the 25th :)

  • Bassano10/05/2010 at 22:56

Grrrr. Now Wired are telling me the iPad with 3G is the go because of the GPS and maps.

I toyed with this choice too

Since I have the iPhone I decide to save £100 and go for WiFi only

Might look into MiFi in the future which can be used with any device if required

  • Bert10/05/2010 at 22:56

    Interesting

I haven't heard it mentionned anywhere in print, particularly in Joe's blog... If someone would know.. What got me re-thinking about this is a post elsewhere that said that Avon may be willing to offer an un-branded tire supply, so teams could brand them as they will.. Tires by Goodyear, tires by Panasonic, tires by Burger King!

That sounds like such a weird plan, that only B.E. could come up with it... Except, how does he make money? Only if there is no other round-black-thing choice.

  • Bassano10/05/2010 at 22:57

Sigh. I don't really care about the 3G, it's the GPS. But I think you are right. The iphone can do that job.

  • RocketRedhead10/05/2010 at 22:57

damn, okay, there's more i can try.

sorry my phone is a pain! :)

  • me10/05/2010 at 22:58

    i likes a challenge :)

  • Alison10/05/2010 at 22:58

Did you save the driver install file before you ran it?

No. I can go back on the website and try again. I've managed to change the settings so the screen is passable. I just don't want it to get in a tizz again.

  • Bassano10/05/2010 at 22:59

For me, 32Gb more was a bigger gain for a similar price

in that case - challenge extended!

  • paul10/05/2010 at 23:01

Glad someone else is thinking for me.

Motorsport related, partial media, partial event organisation, partial championship running type company. there are a few in the area of which are awesome but they aren't getting back to me however much i prod

So you haven't been looking at PR companies that give you all the same skills but not in a motorsport setting?

  • RocketRedhead10/05/2010 at 23:04

I haven't no because whilst the skill set is the same the application is very different and PR is only one part I would be interested in. I've done a whole year of skills sets and theory, id now like to do some real motorsport application if i can

  • Bassano10/05/2010 at 23:05

So you haven't been looking at PR companies that give you all the same skills but not in a motorsport setting?

I was thinking about Joe's PR person Emma Stonier

Lou: I'm sorry to say that I lost a good friend to Canon today :(

HD video was the killer feature. I feel I've let the side down

  • lou10/05/2010 at 23:10

he didn't reply to anyone saying the link didn't work so maybe he posted and then closed twitter :(

Jackie gave me an idea about asking him if he'd thought about doing any photography talks in london.. like the regular ones he seems to do in singapore...

but... who wants a dslr that has built in video :( bad times.

I learnt something about Nikon the other day that i had never realised. Nikon have never changed their lens mounts... so in theory the most up to date camera could use one of the first Nikon lenses (although it obviously wouldn't have autofocus..:) ).. Canon on the other hand.. changed theirs at some point (i think when they first introduced digital?).. very interesting. kinda makes me love Nikon even more :)

  • Bassano10/05/2010 at 23:14

    *Ahem*

    Work experience!

Speaking of which, would you be open to some wedding shoot stuff over the summer

I think you'd get a small cut for a days work?

My pal Keith is keen to chat with you

  • me10/05/2010 at 23:14

me! but ask me in tomorrows daily :)

  • lou10/05/2010 at 23:14

I didn't know he did them. An evening with Joe - I mean Darren

i think he only does them because of canon's involvement in singapore or something... i found one of the lectures on youtube and loved it... even if the sound and picture quality was bad.

  • lou10/05/2010 at 23:16

    *Ahem*

    Work experience!

Darren doesn't seem to be the type who'd offer work experience?... i mean what would i do?... not sure he could get me a media pass for the day or anything.. i'd love to meet him though..

  • lou10/05/2010 at 23:16

    No, actual work

Have a look at his website http://www.shotbythesheriff.co.uk/

If you want to meet up, mid week is better for him. I can arrange something after your exam period when the time's right
