Aaaaand breathe. My oh my, that is what I call the perfect sporting weekend. In fact, did anyone notice what the weather was like? We covered literally everything here at Sidepodcast, from the F1 in Canada, to the Le Mans 24 Hours in... Le Mans to the World Cup in South Africa. Just fan-tastic. And there was more, rugby union, tennis, all commented on this very site. Shall we move onto the bulletpoints? I think we should.

  • Lets start with F1, just brilliant. Canada never fails to be amazing, and while it wasn't the same result as 2008 (I still don't like Petrov) the race itself was fantastic. As usual, Lukeh has his awesome recap of what went on. I have my look back on the new teams, which can I just say is looking like Richard Branson will be wearing that stewardess outfit. And I'd love to point out VIVA F1's Penalty page, which has a lot of writing under 'Canada'.
  • The FBFB made its return. Woooo! And it also featured added tables, which look awesome too. Highlights on the return can be found here.
  • Sadly, my interest in Le Mans ended when both Newcastle born drivers of Rob Bell and Warren Hughes retired. But it still went on without them and was apparantly a cracking race. I think we need to say a big well done to Alianora and other peoples who stayed up the whole 24 hours. You people are crazy.
  • This football thing is proving to be very popular. And even though F1 has sometimes clashed with the games, there's been enjoyment throughout. From the heroics of Siphiwe Tshabalala and the direness of France v Uruguay, we've covered it all. Shame it took till Germany v Australia before the first really great match of the tournament. Here is whats coming up today:
    • Denmark v Netherlands, 12:30 GMT+1 - The Dutch, my tips for the win. So you know they will fail.
    • Japan v Cameroon, 15:00 GMT+1 - Cameroon, or, that team who used to have Roger Milla.
    • Italy v Paraguay, 19:30 GMT+1 - The World Champions against a very good South American, could be game of the day.
What a day. The Dutch and the Italians playing on the same day, God, I thank you. And this week sees the likes of Brazil, Spain enter the scene too. Awesome.
  • Speaking of Siphiwe Tshabalala, Mrs C has set up a dream team on the all new Sidepodcast Wiki. Not based on how good they are, but what they look like, sound like, generally everything other on how good they are. Names in there feature the mentioned Tshabalala as well as Peter Crouch and Miroslave Klose.

And thats it for today, another Monday comes around. For me, picked up the Most Man of the Match Award last night at my teams presentation. Which came as a big surprise to me, considering I thought I'd only had two all season. Not complaining. But, thankfully, last week of exams for me, sadly I miss the mighty Dutch and the terrifyingly good New Zealand, but after that World Cup all the way.

Like lou yesterday, just like to wish everyone in the middle of exams right now the best of luck, no matter what they are. Not a fun period at all, but, at the end of it all, there is a nice treat to look forward to I'm sure.

Have a nice Monday.

For the new football fans. You will not see this at this world cup or any football match in the future ever. Goalkeepers are all a bit crazy but this guy was one of the most mental ever. This is 100% real

I'm glad you said that, I'm relying on the evening games being good because the others are on during work time. I can easily see why people take time off, officially or not :)

Why would you do that to yourself? Surely most of that is pointless filler.

I am adding the Tour de France to my Google Calendar.

Because it's amazing, Le Mans is the greatest race on earth and I didn't get to watch it this weekend so a good 30-40 hours of Mr Hindhaugh is what is required.

  • me13/06/2010 at 23:28

    not a hindy fan?

in years gone by, it would've been 100% rlm, but this year we had 50/50 between that and tv. i kinda preferred the tv.

I have no idea what TMS is, i meant TMR, clearly

Although clearly I'd like to have every form of racing under the sun involved. :) If only I didn't work..

Anyway the stuff I've got already is an absolute pain to score, now I've got to decide the best way to do Le Mans because a question has come up.

One or the other is always delayed which really does bug me, I've never had a tv stream all the way through or even for a large part of the race. Usually I'll play RLM on my laptop and walk around my house with my headphones on doing other stuff that needs doing

I don't mind the BBC ones as much because it's less (obviously) scripted and more chatting and when you're chatting you do make mistakes sometimes. BBC makes me feel like im there with them chatting about the GP, that guy makes me feel like ive been really naughty and have to sit in front of the head teacher

  • Alison13/06/2010 at 23:46

usp content did it on the lotus podcast. only time i've heard it on a professional show. we've done it in the past too.

I think one time it was just a podcast output of a live radio show so I will forgive them that I suppose. They didn't edit the broadcast in any way which seems fair enough. Another time it was pre-recorded though I'm pretty sure.

There is no excuse for that kind of behaviour!! I had a school teacher who wore a bum bag everywhere. It's scarred me.

there was a view of them during FP2

  • Amy14/06/2010 at 00:42

hallo kathi. I tried to translate my german rail tickets yesterday. It would have been easier if I was you :D

  • me14/06/2010 at 00:42

  • Kathi14/06/2010 at 00:44

Tired. Who won that French race?

  • Alison14/06/2010 at 00:45

Is that not what a money belt is? I just always presumed it was a posh name for a bum bag.

  • Leigh O'Gorman14/06/2010 at 00:45

I would never wear a bum bag, are you insane?

    not even for a dare??

Noo the money belts are the really thin ones you wear under your clothes. I thought they were lame too but travel blogs and forums and my friends keep telling me I should get one

  • me14/06/2010 at 00:47

the wrong team and the wrong drivers.

I'm always skeptical about risk of mugging. I don't really think anywhere in Europe is much worse than here tbh and I'd feel like a nut walking about with all my valuables under my clothes....

  • Kathi14/06/2010 at 00:51

the wrong team and the wrong drivers.

    Boo!

  • Amy14/06/2010 at 00:52

    Danny hates me :(

    what position are you in?

  • Amy14/06/2010 at 01:00

I would cry if that happened. Only because my handbag cost more than everything I keep in it. Same with my wallet, i'd be more upset with losing that than i would with losing its contents.

  • Kathi14/06/2010 at 01:02

8 I think. My first (almost all) le mans. Didn't quite manager what Alia did. Amazed I got up at 2am for the gp but it was worth it

  • Journeyer14/06/2010 at 01:22

unreal, isn't it? must time for an off-season. any sport will do.

normally, it's football offseason, but it's the World Cup! so i don't think any of the major sports are on offseason right now.

    9, easily. :)

i'd agree, but we drew at football and all the pugs broke down. can't be more than an 8, even with f1.

  • Kathi14/06/2010 at 01:27

and she said she didn't deserve to be in the top 100?!

I underestimated the severity of my addiction to FR.

Hey Journeyer, what did you think of Schumis driving in the gp?

    ahhh, that is true. :)

Yeah the peugout thing put a damper on it.

  • Amy14/06/2010 at 01:28

Hooray 2.5 hours down, 8 to go! I have spent about 2 of those hours bonding with alistair. I wish everyday was a public holiday.

  • Leigh O'Gorman14/06/2010 at 01:28

being not in the world cup, i'm not particularly affected by it, so the england draw was fine by me

    ;)

  • Journeyer14/06/2010 at 01:29

Hey Journeyer, what did you think of Schumis driving in the gp?

well, it's as bad, if not worse, than scrappy Australia. and goodness knows how bad that was. i don't know how he's managed to smile to the press after that race. it's like he knows something we don't...

again, i must ask why he's putting himself through this...

  • Journeyer14/06/2010 at 01:30

being not in the world cup, i'm not particularly affected by it, so the england draw was fine by me

    ;)

:D hehehe. very true. and the Americans were underdogs - i'm happy for their result too.

  • me14/06/2010 at 01:30

again, i must ask why he's putting himself through this...

i think it must be to make me feel sorry for him. which was almost working, 'cept for the massa incident.

  • paul14/06/2010 at 01:31

again, i must ask why he's putting himself through this...

Me too. I thought he drove like a real rookie. I don't know what is in his mind

  • Journeyer14/06/2010 at 01:31

i think it must be to make me feel sorry for him. which was almost working, 'cept for the massa incident.

you know he doesn't care about how you feel. :D

but it seems massa didn't push for a penalty, either. the ties that bind, indeed.

  • paul14/06/2010 at 01:33

but it seems massa didn't push for a penalty, either. the ties that bind, indeed.

I almost thought kobiashi was in that grey car

  • me14/06/2010 at 01:33

but it's the only rational explanation.

true enough. massa had an awful day, it wouldn't have made a difference.

  • Alison14/06/2010 at 01:33

Mr C, to continue the discussion from a million years ago, Ogg Theora isn't good enough, what about google's VP8 or WebM or whatever it is called?

  • me14/06/2010 at 01:46

Mr C, to continue the discussion from a million years ago, Ogg Theora isn't good enough, what about google's VP8 or WebM or whatever it is called?

i am 100% behind the theory of webm. i know that the quality of the vp8 codec is on par with h.264 and thus considerably better than theora.

webm it ticks all the boxes and with google behind it, the format should hopefully have legs.

at the moment it doesn't fit into our apple workflow, and it could be an issue long term if the ipod won't play it. but it gets a big thumbs up from me.

  • paul14/06/2010 at 01:47

Oh, GP+ has a Bruce mclaren story. Cool !

  • paul14/06/2010 at 01:50

Mr C, to continue the discussion from a million years ago, Ogg Theora isn't good enough, what about google's VP8 or WebM or whatever it is called?

Client support is surely the issue. This is the problem with no flash support on idevices. However you feel, a lot of sites use it. For a video codec to work, the majority of people need to be able to view it.

  • me14/06/2010 at 01:54

Client support is surely the issue. This is the problem with no flash support on idevices. However you feel, a lot of sites use it. For a video codec to work, the majority of people need to be able to view it.

that's true. firefox and chrome will support it, the big question mark is down to ipad/ipod support. logic says it won't happen, and we can't really afford to support two standards.

flash can play h.264. hence firefox + flash + h.264 is the solution likely to remain on sidepodcast for the moment.

theora wasn't ever going to happen, because i couldn't bear what it did to the quality. at least with webm, that's one hurdle out of the way.

  • Kathi14/06/2010 at 01:55

at the moment it doesn't fit into our apple workflow, and it could be an issue long term if the ipod won't play it. but it gets a big thumbs up from me.

Is there any chance apple will change their mind?

  • me14/06/2010 at 02:02

Is there any chance apple will change their mind?

yup. apple's (very valid) arguments against flash don't hold up against webm. also, google contributes a lot back to webkit, which both safari and chrome are built upon. apple would maybe struggle to argue against the inclusion of a vp8 codec, although that may not stop them trying.

also, you have the movie studios. at the moment apple doesn't dominate hollywood like it does the music industry, and hollywood isn't keen to let them take over. studios could hook up with google and push the format forcing apple to play ball.

whatever happens, it's going to take a while to play out though. which is a bit annoying.

Ive been thinking, if we cant have tyres like that for every race due to the suppliers, maybe F1 should use concrete tracks instead of asphult for lower grip racing which is clearly far more entertaining?

  • Christine14/06/2010 at 07:20

I talked an iPad owner into getting a Kindle today. He was loving the Kindle app on the iPad and when I told him that it would sync between devices so if he had a Kindle he could pick up where he left off on the iPad he was sold.

I felt it was a bit flat this year. '08 was a classic and remains the benchmark.

for me, i think it needs more manufacturer interest to make it the best race of all time. audi vs. pugs can only be of so much interest i think.

Mm. I know Le Mans is good and endurance racing is fun, but I really only watch for Franck.

I can't be expected to be interested in something for 24 hours straight and/or after I have slept.

They're the only two teams that run Diesels, right?

I didn't really have any skin in the game ('cept for Corvette Racing, and only then because they're an American team), but I was still interested. Maybe it's just because I didn't want Peugeot to win anything because they're French :)

  • RubberGoat14/06/2010 at 13:18

Yeah it certainly used to be better. I think they are holding out for next year's rules, which will be very different.

One thing I liked last year were how different the cars looked and sounded - you could really tell which car was which by the sound of the engine...

  • me14/06/2010 at 13:20

They're the only two teams that run Diesels, right?

yeah. needs more variety in that area.

Maybe it's just because I didn't want Peugeot to win anything because they're French :)

    audi needed more worthy competition.

  • RubberGoat14/06/2010 at 13:21

They need more parity in that area too...

I agree. Look at what Aston or Oreca might have done if those petrols were closer...

  • jpancoast14/06/2010 at 13:22

    audi needed more worthy competition.

in all fairness, the Pug's were faster.

    When they actually worked.

  • Pat W14/06/2010 at 13:24

for me, i think it needs more manufacturer interest to make it the best race of all time. audi vs. pugs can only be of so much interest i think.

Your right. But for me they can be in any class.

LMP1 battle is only part of it. It was so much better when it was Audi vs Pug up front, then Aston vs Corvette having just a good a race in GT1. Now 'Vette have gone to GT2 which was already a bunfight anyway, so it doesn't feel like that has been added to it feels like another race has been 'stolen'.

Aston moved up to P1 but they were only 'best of the rest' and didn't factor in the main result, then they broke.

  • Pat W14/06/2010 at 13:26

Actually the reliability level at this year's 24 was diabolical compared to previous years

  • me14/06/2010 at 13:27

in all fairness, the Pug's were faster.

sure. but with two manufacturers, if one has in built fault, that's game over. the race is handed to the other.

with three or four participants, that's less likely to happen.

  • RubberGoat14/06/2010 at 13:27

I was none the wiser, for me it was just a normal passing move in the Porsche Curves, like I'd done to 50 or 60 other cars throughout the event. So I was a bit shocked when I was being accused of ending someone's race because I was just completely oblivious.

The Michelin boys tell me I set a record for their tyres during that quadruple stint. All four average laptimes for each stint were quicker than last year's pole time, and in the 3m21s bracket. They had never done that many laps, that fast for such a long period of time.

    A good reason for investigation:

    Q. Is there an argument to suggest that the pace was too hot for the Peugeots and that perhaps you should have set a slower one?

AD: Questionably yes. I think when you are in the lead and you have a lap advantage you can do things to consolidate. But would that have stopped the failures? I don't know. You can turn down the engines slightly, but I don't know that that would have been enough.

From the three factory cars two of them had a similar problem and one had a something that I have never seen before, which was like a suspension failure.

Quite unbelievable. Don't get me wrong, you can consolidate, but we ran this very engine configuration of the car, that's why we spent so much time doing 30-hour tests - three times, to make damn sure the car doesn't break. And until now it hasn't broken, it had been bullet proof.

you built a Tetris version of Nico Rosberg??

    Not quite. Interesting thought though.

It's regarding my phone. I'll warn you now, this is gonna be a long post.

I currently have an iPhone 3G on O2 and I work for Orange, therefore I would like a contract phone with said network. Unfortunately my contract doesn't end on my iPhone until the end of May next year. So until then, not wanting to spend several hundred pounds on buying out my O2 contract, I shall have to sit tight and wait. However, just now I've had an idea that should help me out once I'm on Orange.

I still have my last phone, a Sony Ericsson that's about 3 years old which is locked onto Vodafone. The plan is this - get it unlocked and put onto Orange, then buy a Pay As You Go sim card and put that in the phone. Then every now and again, top it up with credit, say £5 or £10, whatever, and just let it build up. But I'll still use it occasionally if I want to do the Orange Wednesday thing and get 2 for 1 cinema tickets and pizza. :P

Then, when the time comes and my O2 contract is pretty much at an end, I will request a PAC code from them. In the meantime, I'll get a new phone on contract with Orange and do something called Love Your Number which lets you transfer your PAYG number onto your contract. The good bit of this is any credit you have on that PAYG sim card, plus the Phone Fund you build up every time you top up, gets brought across as well as is credited towards your bill. Then, I use my PAC code to transfer my O2 contract number onto that sim card.

So, I end up with a new phone, my O2 contract number on the sim card and all my PAYG credit and Phone Fund credited towards the bill. Sorted!

    (sorry christine if you're invisible)

  • Lukeh14/06/2010 at 19:20

    what are your impressions?

I thought it was a terrible conference. Although the smaller xbox 360 with twice the size hard drive, built in wifi and it actually being quiet (the 360 is VERY loud) for the same price as current models plus being available from today was a mindblowing announcement.

In general it was poor though. Too much emphasis on Wii-copying titles but the kinect has potential. Just think Microsoft are gonna try and concentrate too much on a saturated Wii audience.

  • Scott Woodwiss14/06/2010 at 19:20

Sony's and Nintendo's are tomorrow. I hope to god Sony have something about GT5. They better!

You're welcome. To be honest, I thought it was more routine among Le Mans watchers than it turned out to be. I just felt that if I wanted the proper experience of Le Mans from my computer, I should try to watch as much as possible. If you'd asked me before about 4am if I'd manage the whole thing, I would have been somewhat doubtful.

As for me being crazy... ...I've used to hearing that, so I'll take it as the somewhat-disbelieving-compliment that I think you intended ;)

    I dont think so.

I was due to attend Joe Saward’s Audience With in Old Montreal which, as it was past 7pm, had already started. We happened to be outside Virgin Racing’s motorhome just as Timo Glock, small suitcase in hand, was leaving the circuit…and Geoff asked him if he could give me a lift back to Montreal! The next thing I know, I’m bidding Geoff farewell, handing back my VIP pass and following Timo across the pontoon towards the drivers’ cars.

    I will respectfully disagree. :)

    My driver didn't win either - this year or last. It was still a good race both times... {Comment #265}

Mine didn't and I thought it was mega, but it probably helped that I didn't seriously expect him to win and I know Christine did (with good reason).

  • Alianora La Canta14/06/2010 at 23:26

    from joe:

    ...if Nick Heidfeld were driving Michael Schumacher’s car and producing the same kind of performances would not the media in Germany be clamouring for Nick to be replaced? {Comment #328}

Yes. I don't know if this is due to the desperation Joe is suggesting, a bad cluster of races (probably Michael's personal theory) or whether he still hasn't adjusted to the realities of how F1 driving has changed since he's left (my theory), but there is definitely something not right about the end result. Not bad enough for me to demand Michael's head... ...but not good enough for me to deny Nick the seat next year either.
