Hello everyone! It’s Sunday! I’m expecting the daily to be pretty quiet today given the amount of sport that continues over the second day of our weekend. No doubt there’ll be a thread for today’s world cup action, I’m not going to pretend I’m personally very interested in the Football but if you are there is of course a very lively place to live comment it. If you’re like me and not a fan of the football you’ll be searching for alternative sports or links to keep you interested and entertained, and that’s my job today. Let’s get on with the bullet points;

  • The famous and rather epic Le Mans 24 hour race continues today, live commenting for the first part of the race can be found here and I’m sure a thread for the second half of the race will pop up at one point too. If you haven’t had the chance to check the driver snaps section on the autosport site then I really recommend it, it provides a great glimpse into the life of the drivers throughout the duration of the event. Plenty of photos of Ant and Franck too! :)
  • On the topic of motorsport, the Formula 1 circus is in Canada at the moment with today’s race starting at 12pm local time, which is 5pm in the UK. The later race time makes a nice change for many of us, I’ll be making the most of the time I have to revise but I’m sure many of you will be doing something a lot more interesting. How does the later start affect you? Qualifying yesterday was important for lots of different reasons but the main being that we were given our first non Red Bull pole of the season. A Red Bull slip up or have McLaren made significant improvements? Everyone seems very excited for the race tomorrow (including Jake Humphrey) let’s hope it’s a good one!
  • Oh and one quick mention for Jenson’s fund raising page for the London Triathlon too. it’s such a good cause, I’ll be donating soon, come on everyone I’m sure Sidepodcast can help him boast his current total!
  • I wanted to mention the Lotus racing notes. They are a great read and act as a little emagazine preview to the weekend, with a great Heikki interview and even a photo of Catherine I can’t help thinking the team want Amy’s support! It’s certainly a great little addition to their website and I would love to encourage more teams to produce such publications.

That’s about it for me I’m afraid, I must dash off and revise some more. I would like finish the daily by wishing everyone who is currently taking exams the best of luck, whether they be GCSEs, A levels or anything else. Good luck to everyone, don’t worry, they’ll be over soon!

  • RG12/06/2010 at 23:12

what time are the matches on rg?

    Same as today I think, 12:30, 3:00 and 7:30

  • Journeyer12/06/2010 at 23:12

what time are the matches on rg?

same times as yesterday, i suspect?

  • RG12/06/2010 at 23:13

:D I heard you guys ended up with a draw? 4 draws in 6 matches... Hmmm.

No more than 2 goals in a match, from 5 games I find that interesting.

  • me12/06/2010 at 23:13

ahh, didn't realise it was consistent. ace.

ah that is good news. FP seemed a bit manic today with all the live commenting of everything. very cool but very manic. Without the f1 i think i might have felt a bit lost.

realtime is as good as useless at the moment. it's got to be lclt of ye old. my head would go *boom* otherwise.

thought the site was struggling earlier, but it was just a mediatemple glitch.

then again that's probably a very good thing, i'm trying to step back a bit from the internet.. so i can use my non revision time more effectively for things like.. sleep :)

too much noise, no? maybe it's something my head can't fathom, but it did my head in after 10mins yesterday.

I used 3 lclt tabs earlier, so much easier than scrolling up to the top, changing tab, post comment, scroll to the top etc.

  • Alison12/06/2010 at 23:18

Does anyone have any advice on how to deal with a foam-based emergency??? I have just found a 500ml bottle of shampoo that's leaked all over the carpet :S

  • Steven Roy12/06/2010 at 23:18

There is a rally as well? Do sports bodies not consult each other?

too much noise, no? maybe it's something my head can't fathom, but it did my head in after 10mins yesterday.

I was actually lurking in from time to time while F1 FP3, World Cup, and Hour 2 of Le Mans were going on all at the same time. Compared to that, this (Le Mans + daily) is easy.

  • lou12/06/2010 at 23:19

not compared to the silly world cup horn things... (i walked into the lounge when dad was watching the match, heard the awful loud buzzing and ran in the opposite direction).. how you can watch the match with that awful noise i will never know.

I got the worst of it up with a towel that I had to wash out in the shower because all the foam wouldn't fit in the sink!? I'm unsure of my next move.... Can I just leave it and hope it goes away?

correct. I like Fish only because his name is Fish. And sometimes he plays doubles with Roddick and the media calls them Fish'n'Rod

  • Amy13/06/2010 at 06:00

out of all the active players on the ATP tour they are the two with the most grass titles. Hewitt's record is 7 wins and 0 losses in grass finals but this is the first time he's come up against Roger. He normally plays at Queens, this is the first year he has gone to Halle.

  • Amy13/06/2010 at 06:01

"Federer has also won 76 of his last 77 matches on grass, the only blemish since 2003 being his famous five-set finals loss to Rafael Nadal in the 2008 Wimbledon final."

    thats pretty amazing. <3 Roger.

  • Christine13/06/2010 at 06:04

    thats pretty amazing. <3 Roger.

That is quite incredible. I was talking to my mum about Wimbledon, she said she wasn't bothered about watching it as Fed always wins. I said that at least he has to work for it now as other players are catching him up, but i had to finish with "Oh, no, he'll still win it."

I don't know whether i convinced her or not.

  • Amy13/06/2010 at 06:15

I don't know whether i convinced her or not.

he has only won one of the last two! So its 50/50.

    and a reprimand. anybody else thinks that reprimands are useless? how many reprimands can you get until you get some real punishment? {Comment #201}

The way it's supposed to work is if you get a reprimand for something and then you repeat the offence in the same area of the regulations, you get an automatic penalty upgrade. They're disregarded if the subsequent regulation breach was in a different part of the regulations (so being warned for blocking should result in a penalty upgrade if you block again but not if you deliberately crash into an opponent instead). I do not think the stewards apply this consistently.

My parents have a huge cool wooden game where you try and slide big wooden discs into little slots. That's good fun and it's quite safe!

  • me13/06/2010 at 20:46

    twister!

  • Steven Roy13/06/2010 at 20:51

    twister!

No. You don't want to get a sporting injury when the only person who can get help is tangled up with you.

    dominoes?

That isn't fun. Maybe I'm just bitter from my school days....

    That's a good choice. I like dominoes :)

  • Steven Roy13/06/2010 at 20:55

    dominoes?

That has to be a good place to start. Sitting down so less chance of trips, falls etc and no bending stretching at odd angles. So long as neither of you are bad losers who wil launch dominoes at the other it should work

  • me13/06/2010 at 20:57

I used to volunteer in an old peoples home and they all used to cheat. Bad times.

I am looking for an annual travel insurance policy and have read more tiny print than I really would like to again.... One section really amused me though

    Hazardous Activities

Certain activities are automatically covered by this insurance and these are defined under Section 28 within Section 28

Wintersports, Golf, Wedding Cover - You will not be covered for claims caused by participation in any of the above activities unless included in Section 15-24 and you have contacted OINC.com and been accepted for cover by us.

  • Alison13/06/2010 at 21:15

  • Alison13/06/2010 at 21:18

If something has cover of £150 and an excess of £100 does that mean the most they'd pay you is £50? Or do you get £150 providing you lost £250 worth of stuff?

Oh it was the blogging that did it! Non-stop Monday doing game stuff, non-stop Tuesday with two TMR posts and the LM preview here (even if half of it wasn't mine!), then LM quals Weds (with Viva quiz) and Thurs (with The Wire in the gaps because it was going to be removed from BTV..).

it's all kicking off between mclaren and williams:

Macca’s Andy Latham ran the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in 14 minutes. That was three minutes quicker than our best time, which was set by chief mechanic Carl Gaden

    also, more about mclaren:

You’ve gotta love Lewis Hamilton’s mechanics. After turning up in Turkey two weeks ago with pierced ears, his boys all sported earrings prior to this morning’s first practice session.

    heheheh!

christine and i were discussing earlier that sub three second pitstops are really, really silly. entirely pointless in fact.

i think stopping debrief was the best idea we ever had, because my negativity towards the sport hasn't changed, regardless of a good couple of races. glad people are enjoying it though.

  • RG13/06/2010 at 22:23

I don't see why. But they can be slowed down by removing some personnel, LM style.

  • me13/06/2010 at 22:25

In all fairness, I'm starting to think refuelling/non-refuelling doestn't really matter.

i think we've still averaged more lemons this year than hits. we'll see at the end of the season / next year i guess. i stand by my dislike of the changes though, but i can see why many aren't bothered.

  • Jon Waldock13/06/2010 at 22:25

    I agree with the pitstops,

I don't care about overtaking the tension that comes with having the top 4/5 sepearted by 5 seconds is enough for me. In the days of refuelling the race could be over by the first round of stops as the guy in front had built a significant lead.

  • RG13/06/2010 at 22:26

I think the 2009 regs were a big fail, they've changed some and its helped the racing. I'm not sure if its because of the lack of refuelling.

  • me13/06/2010 at 22:26

I don't see why. But they can be slowed down by removing some personnel, LM style.

blink and you've no idea the car even pitted. unless the tv cameras pick it up, you've got nope of know ing someone is in. there's just not enough time to pick it up.

fine for the leaders. a complete joke for the tailenders.

  • Pat W13/06/2010 at 22:27

that would be good. I don't mind no refuelling, I just think the stops themselves are stupidly short that it does seem a it pointless

the point is that they change to different compound tyres, and that F1 stops are the fastest in the world.

Pitstops are needed because they break up the racing and give it a change, but I want to watch the stop, rather than missing it each time

I'm not necessarily defending the reason why, I just think that is one of the reasons why. I mean I don't see any reason to have that many people for a pit stop.

i don't mind if there's a hundred people helping out, so long as i have time to at least acknowledge something is happening. 8-10 seconds seemed to work for me.

oooh, simple enough! That was a recurring theme with my assignments. Simple option always works.

Upon asking Adam Cooper what the point of reprimands were, I got this

    @adamcooperf1

A reprimand is totally meanlingless. As one team manager told me yesterday, 'teams laugh at them...'

    Sad, but true

  • Lukeh13/06/2010 at 22:47

    Sad, but true

It's a trip to the headmasters office, a stern telling to and a quick 'don't do that again or we'll ring your parents'. Bounces straight off drivers I bet.

so long as no-one tries it on next race, i guess it's job done loop-hole exploited.

on the upside, it looks like mclaren aren't scared of the fia anymore, which can only be a good thing.

or quite scary, how far will McLaren go?

don't know. but they've been avoiding any marginal calls for the past 18 months, seem like a new twist from them in canada.

what with that and ron turning up, i say they're back to their old selves.

don't they have a suspended sentence hanging over them still or has that expired?

  • me13/06/2010 at 22:56

probably, but it was a sentence brought in by the old fia regime. no-one can force the fia to honour that if they quietly choose not to.

    ah-ha. renaults must've been a lifetime sentence.

it's been more than 12 months for mclaren though, so something must've prompted them to throw caution to the wind.

I'm sure Max leaving is directly related.

there was only Abu Dhabi without him in charge I think.

  • Pat W13/06/2010 at 23:02

Allan McNish will be there all 3 days too. If I see him I'll tell him how much I enjoyed his interview with Jon ;)

Last year he looked at me funny. I didn't know what to say. Maybe it was the Aston Martin hat.

  • Pat W13/06/2010 at 23:03

Jackie Stewart driving Jim Clark's Indy winning car should be very special too. I'm just going through the confirmed who's driving what list :)

Ooh can't wait. It was there static last year, they hadn't fixed it yet

  • Jon Waldock13/06/2010 at 23:04
