Yesterday was the tenth anniversary of the death of Douglas Adams, a singularly wonderful fellow. Largely these days he's known for the quote about deadlines, but I would say that my iPhone reminds me very much of the Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy.

Read this article from 1999 by Mr Adams about the Internet, so prescient, so right. Please do read it.

Anyway I have decided to give you a different quote by Douglas Adams:

It is a mistake to think you can solve any major problems just with potatoes.

But thanks to Amy's research today it would appear that you can maybe solve them with turtle bread:

Turtle Bread. Cute!

Turtle Bread. Cute!

Or perhaps cupcakes. I haven't been with you lovely people for the last few weeks. Thanks first for Alianora who wrote her debut daily post and I sent cupcakes to for her efforts, that was four weeks ago!

Cupcakes!

Then two weeks ago Mr C stepped into the breech but he decided to forgo cupcakes which were instead sent to Lou

Cupcakes!

The commenters decided on Lou because she had selflessly suggested other people should have the cupcakes. And as it was her anniversary with Mr Lukeh Muse

we hatched a plan to send cakes to both!

But this is all very well and good, but now you’re back is there any chance you could give us some F1 news?

F1 News (imagine this sung by Christine to the tune of TED NEWS)

Alonso has written a new blog post where he makes the point that his points deficit isn’t anywhere near as bad as people think it is, and in fact is far less bad than last year.

Jenson and Lewis went to Number 10 Downing Street, London, England, SW1A 2AA to launch the United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety.

It really sounded like it was all going to be about cars but Jenson found that it might be about guns and Lewis thought it might be about swords.

Want a job in F1? @beaks_the_twitt of Lotus didn’t and has quit, but don’t let that put you off you can go and apply here

Talking of excitement at Lotus... Mike Gascoyne has written an article in the telegraph asking people to ignore the wingers and embrace the new wonderful F1 that we are having this year.

What about non-F1 eh?

Well Lukeh has been doing more sketching. This time of Tredegar House

What if instead of drawing you want your computer to give you the fancy CSS3 way of making rounded corners, background gradients and opacity, and you want to use a lovely web interface to generate the code (Mr C I’m looking at you) . The site is even called css3.me

Most important link of the day

Katherine tweeted this earlier... but it is awesome... Sci-Fi Ikea Manuals

It includes instructions on how to construct a flat pack: Delorean, Lightsaber and a Tardis, and did I mention... a Delorean.

I mean not real instructions, but how the Ikea instructions would go.

Have fun everyone. Big hugs for those who want hugs, a smile and a nod of the head for the rest. Catch you in the comments!

Very sweet daily, Alex, in many ways. Thanks for the hug. I've had a crazy few days/weeks. Very stressful, but I'm playing along. :)

Work opportunities seem to be coming from all directions from a verrry long (years long) drought - I'll go for the life coaching training in two weeks, and I've contacted someone who may become my first client. I started submitting voice over auditions and now I'm getting invitations to audition. I haven't booked any jobs yet, but getting any kind of invitation is so incredible, it's encouraging me to keep going. And today a teacher friend is going to be a dean at a summer institute for gifted kids and invited me to apply to be an instructor, and it's going to be held at Yale University! Whoa. But it takes place during the 2 weeks I'll be in the UK.

I have no idea why. I guess taking a few key steps to have the kind of life that I want and that matches me is working out. It's hard to absorb it all and just keep up. But I guess it's officially time to move on.

The names dropped? Eric Schmidt of Google, Sean Parker of Facebook/Napster fame, Terry Semel who was with Yahoo previously.

Big names, yes, but zero previous involvement in motorsport - which is something I'm not that comfortable with...

no-one did that?! also this did not happen:

@suttonimages: @ScarbsF1 was that steering wheel image just simply downloaded from the f1.com website and then used without link or copyright mention?

no images were downloaded by scarbs. i need to blog this later today, mark sutton is clearly as thick as a plank.

Hehe. Yes, that too. I do agree, though - surely watermarking should solve this?

  • Mr C12/05/2011 at 08:40

they watermark images on their own site. they must do that for a reason.

  • SteveCE12/05/2011 at 08:43

someone needs to give Sutton a crash course on the interwebz. We start with over 9000, move on to trolling and end with a rick roll

  • Lynch12/05/2011 at 08:44

no images were downloaded by scarbs

That might be the case.. but from what I can gather from all of this is that scarbs still used the image on his site ?? ... as far as I am concerned he is still using the image no matter how the image gets there (linked, d/loaded by scarbs etc... ) ....

  • Alex Andronov12/05/2011 at 08:46

they watermark images on their own site. they must do that for a reason.

And it is trivial to make photos only appear on the website that they are hosted on and ban hotlinking... really trivial... Thus meaning somebody would have to download and "steal" your file.

If they are that upset about it a) somebody needs to explain the internet to Mark and b) they need to write their contracts better.

  • Mr C12/05/2011 at 08:48

If you were using google reader ro read the article on f1.com and the picture appeared in the article then would you feel google reader was stealing the picture?

Scarbs is linking to a picture hosted on the F1 servers.

  • Mr C12/05/2011 at 08:49

Sutton does seem to have got his wires crossed and think the image in question has been rehosted

Ironically, if Sutton looked at Scarb's blog and complained about some of those pictures, he'd actually have a case

i think that's probably what happened. scarbs has wilfully and regularly stolen (and edited) other peoples images without permission, sutton just picked the wrong link to pick on, i guess.

  • Mr C12/05/2011 at 09:30

You'd think as a cinema manager or whathaveyou the issue of copyright might have come up for him before...

we know from the daily posts that some people find image copyright tricky. to me it's always been clear, but thinking about it, i don't actually know how i know, i/we just sort of always did.

when we started sidepodcast it was always about assigning correct permissions to images.

  • Alex Andronov12/05/2011 at 09:34

    I commented too...

Indeed… I believe that term in their contract is totally unenforcable because they would have to either show that they are consistantly prosecuting people for all links or explictly ban only certain kinds of links and then consistantly challenge just the wrong kind of links. And somebody would say, “why not start with google”…

Google currently has 38,000+ images from formula1.com…

hehe we'll if i ever make it to F1 i'll tell you what it's like to have paranoid colleagues, but they seem to be alright together, a nice community. maybe it's just the non f1 world they don't like?.

Afternoon guys. Have decided bus drivers are now evil.

I once had to stand around for 20 minutes waiting for a bus because the bus I was already on decided to stop while the driver got out to propose to his girlfriend. Cue publicity shots as the bus company invited the press along for this "touching" moment. Meanwhile we're left thinking "Hey! We'd like to get home guys!"

Bus stops are not romantic places to propose marriage even if you are a bus driver.

See this is the thing. Will the next one be a little bit better or loads better? I kinda wanna use it to browse, edit photos, read stuff and I'm not sure what else - what are it's other strengths?

I wouldnt think now is the time to be worrying about the next one. in december, yes but the 2 has just come out, you may have to wait 18 months for the 3

Times don't mean much as they go through 4 'phases' sticking to set speeds, but good to see them getting up to 220 already.

Tung is fastest with a 220.477mph avg lap speed.

    Hildebrand 218.755

    Hinchcliffe 218.443

Kimball (only 16 laps done) 209.706

Mann (currently on her first run) 207.594

Jakes (only 12 laps done) 198.230

  • Leigh O'Gorman12/05/2011 at 15:04

Jakes (only 12 laps done) 198.230

He needs to get quicker, much sooner

  • Leigh O'Gorman12/05/2011 at 15:05

Jakes (only 12 laps done) 198.230

Actually, he hasn't even passed phase 1 with that speed, surely?

  • Pat W12/05/2011 at 15:06

Actually, he hasn't even passed phase 1 with that speed, surely?

Agreed on all counts, he's got to do 200-205 isn't it? But worth noting Tung has done 53 laps. Presumably 220 is the last phase?

  • Leigh O'Gorman12/05/2011 at 15:07

T&S screw-up or is he doing another phase?

    Screw-up I reckon, they've all gone now

One more giant from the 2000s is having a painful comeback. And I thought Schumacher was doing bad.

PGATOUR: Tiger woods has WD from the @2011PLAYERS. Will not be replaced in the field.

    From USA Today:

He walked off the course at the TPC after nine holes and a 6-over start as pain from the injuries flared up again.

Woods had a bogey on the first hole, a triple-bogey on the fourth, another bogey on five and yet another bogey on nine before withdrawing. He was dead last on the leaderboard after falling to 5-over through 5 holes.

With Federer struggling considerably as well and Kobe's Lakers getting sent out of the playoffs early, it really is a new era, folks.

Not here, but I've read somewhere that his first 9 at Augsta 1997 was 40, and he went on to win. His front 9 here was 42. Hardly massive. Not the same guy as before.

Since there is no race this weekend, I can give one suggest of something to watch. This weekend is the first Cascadia Cup match of the season between my beloved Portland Timbers and the evil of the north known as the Seattle Sounders. Best football rivalry in North America. It's on ESPN here, I don't know what this would be over there but might be interesting.

I think they wanted to do a pilot but it never happened. They tried to do a pilot of Spaced and it went down really, really badly. British humour isn't worth doesn't work in tv programmes so well when translated to an American audience although to be fair The Office did well from the jump over although it became much much more than a version of the UK one obviously.

I think the difference now is that he has realised that he is not suddenly going to get competitive and Mercedes have finally grasped how good di Resta is.

The one I feel sorry for is Rosberg. Had he been consistently a tenth faster than Schumacher everyone would be saying what a great driver he is but because he is blowing him away everyone talks about how bad Schumacher has been

  • Alianora La Canta12/05/2011 at 21:07

I think the difference now is that he has realised that he is not suddenly going to get competitive and Mercedes have finally grasped how good di Resta is.

I think Mercedes grasped how good Paul was late in 2009, which is why he was put in a Force India test position. At that point (around the time Mercedes buying out Brawn) it was the best development place for him because they didn't know whether they'd have to keep Bruno Senna in the test position.

The trouble is that I don't think Michael is the sort of person who is inclined to break contracts. He'll probably see himself as honour-bound to seek his obligations even if he's completely miserable. It's noble of him that he has respected every contract he's signed since Benetton, but right now I think it creates an awkward situation.

Ross may gently break the suggestion to Michael to leave if his performances don't pick up but I don't think anything will come of it, especially since I don't think Ross wants to believe Michael can't become the driver he remembers and Mercedes doesn't want to admit they've thrown millions at the wrong driver.

  • Rubbergoat12/05/2011 at 21:08

I can't publish what we say because Christine would never forgive me.

At the school discos, there used to be a cover version of "Glory Glory Man United" for the home side. The fact that this put the emphasis on the wrong syllable of the team name simply made everyone who wasn't a football fan laugh out loud on the dance floor...

My favourite EJ story is one that happened when he was racing himself. He was driving home after a race towing his race car at speed when a blue light appeared in his mirror. He disappeared with the cops and his mates thoulght he would lose his licence this time.

He returned to his car and announced he had just sold his car to the cop.

That is impressive by any standard

They have certain number of disabled rooms and not quite as many disabled customers. I have some so close to pulling the red cord in thebathroom rather than the light cord

  • Mr C12/05/2011 at 23:05

probably trying to be different for the sake of it actually. the basis of the argument was he was doing okay in practice.

  • Alianora La Canta12/05/2011 at 23:05

Breaking out the wishful thinking - makes anything look like glittering gold, even if it's gelatinous gloop (or worse).

Admittedly that's better evidence than there's been for some claims of underrated talent - but it's not enough when it really counts.

  • Maverick12/05/2011 at 23:06

what? he had to send his overalls to the cleaners after a force india appeared alongside him!

  • Steven Roy12/05/2011 at 23:07

Since when were times in FP meaningful? He was unprofessionally slow in quali and marginally better in the race.

  • Alianora La Canta12/05/2011 at 23:08

what? he had to send his overalls to the cleaners after a force india appeared alongside him!

Time-wise he was doing OK in practise. Timing computers are less good at noting startle reflexes...

his times were okay in the race, the crash with petrov is what cost him - but if it'd been a rookie crashing into petrov in that manner we'd be saying they're not cut out for F1

  • Alianora La Canta12/05/2011 at 23:10

his times were okay in the race, the crash with petrov is what cost him - but if it'd been a rookie crashing into petrov in that manner we'd be saying they're not cut out for F1

Being a second off his team-mate in qualifying in equal equipment didn't help much either. If he'd qualified with Rosberg he wouldn't have been near Petrov to crash with him.

  • Mr C12/05/2011 at 23:13

Being a second off his team-mate in qualifying in equal equipment didn't help much either. If he'd qualified with Rosberg he wouldn't have been near Petrov to crash with him.

but even that isn't good enough. he needs to be ahead of nico.

  • Maverick12/05/2011 at 23:16

Being a second off his team-mate in qualifying in equal equipment didn't help much either.

it was unfortunate as his Q2 time was half a second better (obviously still behind Rosberg)

but Webber has being doing the same all year, yet Vettel is getting the credit where Rosberg isn't

for me, it's the silly mistakes from Schumacher that are painful to watch - the crash with petrov, the free practice spin... amateur hour

  • Alianora La Canta12/05/2011 at 23:17

but even that isn't good enough. he needs to be ahead of nico.

At some point, yes. But at this point I'd settle for being with him because at least that could allow Schumi-supporters the excuse that both may be maximising their current package. As it is, the Schumi-supporters have no visible means of justification with regard to expecting him to resurge this year or next.

  • Mr C12/05/2011 at 23:18

but Webber has being doing the same all year, yet Vettel is getting the credit where Rosberg isn't

also true. i did give vettel driver of the day for turkey*, if that helps.

    *reluctantly

  • Alianora La Canta12/05/2011 at 23:18

but Webber has being doing the same all year, yet Vettel is getting the credit where Rosberg isn't

Probably because we can't quite believe how good Vettel is at qualifying yet. Webber's refuge is in Vettel's audacity.

Rosberg's been going very well but hasn't stolen any headlines yet, which is why he's not getting the credit he deserves. Also, Webber hasn't been the subject of tall-poppy syndrome in the last two years.

Tall poppy syndrome (TPS) is a pejorative term used in the UK, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand to describe a social phenomenon in which people of genuine merit are resented, attacked, cut down, or criticised because their talents or achievements elevate them above or distinguish them from their peers.

He went through about 8 years of that stage before mid-2009. The media problems he's had since then have been of a different variety (largely underestimation of what he's capable of doing when things go right for him).

    And then just maybe...

  • Alianora La Canta12/05/2011 at 23:40

Who has made a decent comeback since Alain Prost?

Good question. As far as people who have been away for a whole season or more are concerned, I cannot think of anyone, even if de la Rosa's first comeback was half-decent and Pizzonia's second stint was marginally better than his first one.

  • Maverick12/05/2011 at 23:41

Live comedy is awesome. Last I saw was Shappi Khorsandi and Arthur Smith (a legend live) a couple of months ago.. always vow to go more often, never do.

Lucky here in this small town to have a local venue attracting quite big names sometimes 'unofficially' not part of their big tour, which does mean the set can be a bit short.
