Yesterday was the tenth anniversary of the death of Douglas Adams, a singularly wonderful fellow. Largely these days he's known for the quote about deadlines, but I would say that my iPhone reminds me very much of the Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy.
Read this article from 1999 by Mr Adams about the Internet, so prescient, so right. Please do read it.
Anyway I have decided to give you a different quote by Douglas Adams:
It is a mistake to think you can solve any major problems just with potatoes.
But thanks to Amy's research today it would appear that you can maybe solve them with turtle bread:

Or perhaps cupcakes. I haven't been with you lovely people for the last few weeks. Thanks first for Alianora who wrote her debut daily post and I sent cupcakes to for her efforts, that was four weeks ago!

Then two weeks ago Mr C stepped into the breech but he decided to forgo cupcakes which were instead sent to Lou

The commenters decided on Lou because she had selflessly suggested other people should have the cupcakes. And as it was her anniversary with Mr Lukeh Muse

we hatched a plan to send cakes to both!
But this is all very well and good, but now you’re back is there any chance you could give us some F1 news?
F1 News (imagine this sung by Christine to the tune of TED NEWS)
Alonso has written a new blog post where he makes the point that his points deficit isn’t anywhere near as bad as people think it is, and in fact is far less bad than last year.
Jenson and Lewis went to Number 10 Downing Street, London, England, SW1A 2AA to launch the United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety.
It really sounded like it was all going to be about cars but Jenson found that it might be about guns and Lewis thought it might be about swords.
Want a job in F1? @beaks_the_twitt of Lotus didn’t and has quit, but don’t let that put you off you can go and apply here
Talking of excitement at Lotus... Mike Gascoyne has written an article in the telegraph asking people to ignore the wingers and embrace the new wonderful F1 that we are having this year.
What about non-F1 eh?
Well Lukeh has been doing more sketching. This time of Tredegar House
What if instead of drawing you want your computer to give you the fancy CSS3 way of making rounded corners, background gradients and opacity, and you want to use a lovely web interface to generate the code (Mr C I’m looking at you) . The site is even called css3.me
Most important link of the day
Katherine tweeted this earlier... but it is awesome... Sci-Fi Ikea Manuals
It includes instructions on how to construct a flat pack: Delorean, Lightsaber and a Tardis, and did I mention... a Delorean.
I mean not real instructions, but how the Ikea instructions would go.
Have fun everyone. Big hugs for those who want hugs, a smile and a nod of the head for the rest. Catch you in the comments!
hehe, glad to have the daily alex back :)
Thank you for the entertaining daily, Alex :)

wha?
What if instead of drawing you want your computer to give you the fancy CSS3 way of making rounded corners, background gradients and opacity, and you want to use a lovely web interface to generate the code (Mr C I’m looking at you)
i scoffed at that earlier, given i can code it by hand, but man that is a fun interface to play with. whheeeeeeeee!
I commented this earlier this afternoon but I think it's worth repeating
The duo do a fabulous cover of the Angry Birds theme http://www.youtube.com/user/PomplamooseMusic
Their other covers are pretty good too

Great daily Alex.
Love all those calories
Very sweet daily, Alex, in many ways. Thanks for the hug. I've had a crazy few days/weeks. Very stressful, but I'm playing along. :)
Work opportunities seem to be coming from all directions from a verrry long (years long) drought - I'll go for the life coaching training in two weeks, and I've contacted someone who may become my first client. I started submitting voice over auditions and now I'm getting invitations to audition. I haven't booked any jobs yet, but getting any kind of invitation is so incredible, it's encouraging me to keep going. And today a teacher friend is going to be a dean at a summer institute for gifted kids and invited me to apply to be an instructor, and it's going to be held at Yale University! Whoa. But it takes place during the 2 weeks I'll be in the UK.
Sounds like you have suddenly become popular.
I have no idea why. I guess taking a few key steps to have the kind of life that I want and that matches me is working out. It's hard to absorb it all and just keep up. But I guess it's officially time to move on.
Sometimes life just deals you a better hand. Then you have to play the cards you are dealt to the best of your ability
hehe the cakes are so yummy Alex!! :)
also... i've just seen this stunning image from Vladimir Rys which is just amazing
http://tinyurl.com/5v29c9m
also, he's on twitter (not tweeting much about f1 yet) but he's following me, and i haven't even tweeted him yet :)

Hi Steven, hi Kai
Ooh, and Lou. :D
*gasp* I love it.
Well said. I like the sentiment. Thanks.
Hi
I've been meaning to read that Douglas Adams piece all day...
Hi Lou
I see you finished your essay and dented your Mac.
Well done on the essay
Evening
Same.
i didn't dent my mac! it got dented! :'( i picked it up as it had been on the table while we were eating and noticed it. i have no idea how it happened, but it wasn't there this morning.. it's only tiny but i'm mad as hell that it could have been a flatmate. never.trusting.anyone.with.it.again.
and thank you :) just a tiny bit of a research journal to finish and i'm all done till i get my summer work.
This feeling is common, you are thoroughly bonded with your yong now :D
*young
Maybe they will not trust you with a huge TV again
We didn’t need a special word for interactivity in the same way that we don’t (yet) need a special word for people with only one head.
i've never left it in a room without me in it.. i've never dropped anything on it, never put anything on it, clean it so often to make sure there are no finger prints and things. Don't eat near it, keep drinks away from it.. and it gets a tiny tiny dent.. :'( am gutted.
oh yes. I thought I was going to keel over when I realized I scratched the bottom of my laptop. After a while I saw it as a way of claiming it as my very own.
Pluggety plug plug
DRStrategy
It's only a little dent.
i cleaned his TV this weekend and everything. Don't think it was Dom.. or my flatmates i don't think.. i dunno how it happened.
but my mac is beautiful, and i make a massive effort to keep it looking that way. it's just a bit scary. My mac has changed my life. i (heart) it.
Mine has changed my life, too. Not to be melodramatic, it's just changed who I do most work.
:D
*how
I should just go to bed.
my mac is just awesome. Apple are awesome for creating macs and giving me a laptop which works so well, and looks so pretty!! plus editing images is about 10000 x easier and more fun. :)
My new one is up to 6 weeks away :(
aw don't worry i'm having one of those days too. i had 3 hours sleep and somehow i'm still awake but i've been rubbish at composing sentences and generally being normal all day.
Normal is overrated
aw no! :( least it will be all new and shiny :)
You need sleep
hehe! there are friends who would argue i'm not normal anyway, but today it's been a bit like i've needed someone to look after me.
I'm happy to wait considering the specs are Build To Order
aww! that's awesome. is it a macbook or imac?
27" iMac
I've no need for a laptop anymore
Me too. I was up at 1:45am until about 3am. This is normal for you lot, but remember I'm usually 5 hours behind ya.
:D
I told my classes that "I can't get my words today" and that was such a dumb way of saying that, even!
ohhh..... very nice....
:o!!! my flatmate has one of those (well it's certainly big enough to fill the room with light and it's just massive. love it tho.
that's true, but two of my friends are working in the kitchen with me sitting here. may send them home, can't go to bed with them still working here.. seeing as they don't even live here XD
Great line from Douglas Adams article from the daily
One of the most important things you learn from the internet is that there is no ‘them’ out there. It’s just an awful lot of ‘us’.
What's the deal with this Twitpic copyright saga?
They own our pics and will sell to whomever they wish?
:D
Douglas Adams again
and ‘technology’, as the computer scientist Bran Ferren memorably defined it, is ‘stuff that doesn’t work yet.’
I love that man.
what?!
I'm digging into it, they updated their terms of servie a few days ago. Looking for a good link but this will do for now
http://www.trustedreviews.com/news/twitpic-claims-copyright-og-your-photos1
In the meantime, how about a man with a jetpack, crossing the Grand Canyon
http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/11/swiss-rocketeer-jetpacks-above-grand-canyon-lives-to-tell-the-t/
oh goodness...
I saw that earlier. Looks like fun
oh my god! awesome!
What a gorgeous and serene clip. Good for him.
From the British Journal of Photography
TwitPic signs controversial deal with celebrity photo agency
"It comes hours after the image-sharing website was hit by a storm of criticism for claiming the copyright on all content published on TwitPic"
That is absolutely outrageous. They have absolutely no right to claim copyright on other people's photos.
"To clarify our ToS regarding ownership, you the user retain all copyrights to your photos and videos, it's your content. Our terms state by uploading content to TwitPic you allow us to distribute that content on twitpic.com and our affiliated partners."
The user seems to keep copyright but twitpic can benfit from their usage
Crazy
Pretty bold move.
We are not claiming copyright just the right to profit from other people's work without giving the creator anything
ohh thanks, haven't had chance to catch up with the BJP this week. gonna get some sleep now, but have bookmarked for tomorrow. nighty night! x
Night Lou
I will now attempt to get sleep that I have not had in many days.
Have a good night, you guys.
G'night Kai
Night Kai
oh, I forgot to tell you guys that someone got a hold of my debit card and went on a shopping spree in Italy!
they only got one purchase of $234, though, because it was automatically flagged and cancelled after that. They tried 6 more times today, though.
the debit card # only. It's now shredded.
What? Bugger
I've had that twice with cards being delivered to me. I only collect from my branch now
No, it wasn't the card, it was the number, sorry. Mine was in my wallet the whole time, which is why they flagged it and recognized that I can't be in CT and Italy at the same time.
Sorry, I gathered that
I just meant, it's a right royal pain
It was freaky, but I feel good that my bank and fraud protection were all over that immediately and took care of it. What a strange and stressful 24 hours.
Ok, really going now. :)
Seconded :)
I thought that was normal for social networking, it's just the wording that's new?
Scary :S

Morning all, looks like Dany Bahar has made the jump from F1 into "Anthemic-Orchestral-Rock-Musical-Theatre Fusion"
http://jalopnik.com/5800853/this-is-the-joke-lotus-has-become
I was quite amused with MrC's tweets to Sutton Images.
...they seem to have gone quiet
Although back up again this morning
Morning. I know it's not off-season but how about a one-off Thursday thoughts? Both Alian and Dr Vee have blogged about DRS and why the racing this year is intrinsically wrong. I'd be interested in seeing others' thoughts
Go for it!
morning everyone
ooh...big F1 move!
Beaks to mclaren http://twitter.com/#!/beaks_the_twitt/statuses/68588174816972801
Does that make him the sixth driver? :D
Morning folks. :)
I will check it out :)
Oooohh... and there was me thinking he was leaving F1 altogether
Maybe a factory role, or perhaps he couldnt resist Ron
Ron does have special charms
hehe!
i sent and email suggesting that they provide a watermark to people using their images (including us on the big picture), but they haven't replied.
i'm baffled why all f1 photographers think the world is out to steal their livelihoods. last month one of the f1 snappers decided that creative commons was evil and would prevent him from feeding his kids.
Hmmm. Team Murdoch is at it again.
http://blogs.news.sky.com/kleinman/Post:5a404f59-98bc-44e5-8b4e-9bb6c671ca35
A lot of name-dropping in the article, but basically they're saying an investment group of serious big-hitters wants to join in on the News Corp-Exor deal.
The names dropped? Eric Schmidt of Google, Sean Parker of Facebook/Napster fame, Terry Semel who was with Yahoo previously.
Big names, yes, but zero previous involvement in motorsport - which is something I'm not that comfortable with...
how can sutton still be so confused?
@suttonimages: very heated debate from your colleagues who seem to think we should give away images to anybody for any use!
no-one did that?! also this did not happen:
@suttonimages: @ScarbsF1 was that steering wheel image just simply downloaded from the f1.com website and then used without link or copyright mention?
no images were downloaded by scarbs. i need to blog this later today, mark sutton is clearly as thick as a plank.
interesting. i missed that discussion yesterday, but it looks like it was a fiery one.
i wasn't really, but sutton seem insistent on making **** up. they're completely mental.
A nonsense one you mean.
Im not sure what they were expecting to happen when they sold there images to websites
Seems he thinks Twitter is publishing the way a blog is
Hehe. Yes, that too. I do agree, though - surely watermarking should solve this?
they watermark images on their own site. they must do that for a reason.
someone needs to give Sutton a crash course on the interwebz. We start with over 9000, move on to trolling and end with a rick roll
That might be the case.. but from what I can gather from all of this is that scarbs still used the image on his site ?? ... as far as I am concerned he is still using the image no matter how the image gets there (linked, d/loaded by scarbs etc... ) ....
And it is trivial to make photos only appear on the website that they are hosted on and ban hotlinking... really trivial... Thus meaning somebody would have to download and "steal" your file.
If they are that upset about it a) somebody needs to explain the internet to Mark and b) they need to write their contracts better.
:) :)
If you were using google reader ro read the article on f1.com and the picture appeared in the article then would you feel google reader was stealing the picture?
Scarbs is linking to a picture hosted on the F1 servers.
he didn't. he linked to an image on twitter.
oh it's even more rediculous
HAL is on the internet?!?
this is what scarbs tweeted: http://twitter.com/#!/ScarbsF1/status/68069849372434433
and this is the response: https://twitter.com/#!/suttonimages/status/68073383014825985
I'm running a bit blind at the mo as twitter has been banned here at the office.
Fun times
Can you deploy the ipad? or is it blocked at a higher level
for alex: http://sidepodcast.posterous.com/tread-carefully
In other web sense news (web sense is the internet blocking software we use here)... Sidepodcast has now become famous enough to have been categorised as "Sports"!
you're a very kind man.
Sutton does seem to have got his wires crossed and think the image in question has been rehosted
Ironically, if Sutton looked at Scarb's blog and complained about some of those pictures, he'd actually have a case
i think that's probably what happened. scarbs has wilfully and regularly stolen (and edited) other peoples images without permission, sutton just picked the wrong link to pick on, i guess.
You'd think as a cinema manager or whathaveyou the issue of copyright might have come up for him before...
hehe!
boom boom
here's a great post on the subject, from rachel: http://blog.bibrik.com/archives/2011/05/linking_tos_and_copyright.html
This bit was interesting: …links can only be made to this Site with our prior approval (please email admin@formula1.com for further information)
..so we should be emailing that guy everytime there is an interesting feature on the site we want to tweet? Sounds fun!
@EliGP is getting in on the fun: http://twitter.com/EliGP/statuses/68608182519480320
hehehe!
didn't you know, every time live timing sticks it's because the site guy is dealing with a link request
we know from the daily posts that some people find image copyright tricky. to me it's always been clear, but thinking about it, i don't actually know how i know, i/we just sort of always did.
when we started sidepodcast it was always about assigning correct permissions to images.
I commented too...
A hefty load of driver points should come out of this, especially for Kamui
http://www.vivaf1.com/blog/?p=6569
hehe!
#rankings
i think scarbs just walked out of the pub in a huff:
All, the issue is now closed, I'll explain more later. please do not tweet @suttonimages they are only protecting their own hard work.
but i wasn't finished TALKING! oh.
I guess he has done a deal with them..
Weird, seems Adrian Sutil "accidentally" glassed Eric Lux
could he not have got behar instead?
Haahaaa... yeah "accidentally"
Sutil: inconsistent as ever
It seems they have harnessed the power of Twitter's Direct Messaging. ;)
"I injured another person completely unintentionally."
Nobody would believe him if it had been Bahar
Bahar, you mean? :)
hehe. maybe sutton realised this was quite bad PR.
oh yeah.
Reminds me of that song from chicago:
"And then he ran into my knife.
He ran into my knife ten times! "
that should be lesson #1 for Sutton's internet training
:D What song is that? I LOVE Chicago.
:D
i wondered last night if they were drunk. but unless it was a very late party, this mornings tweets confirm they're just a bit stupid.
Awesome. Will download tonight. :)
Did we spot that Angry Birds on Chrome OS is an HTML5 only implementation?
Its called"The cell block tango" aka 'He had it coming'
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1MWsE_mm2A
yeah it killed my machine. but was pointed out to me this morning, that it's meant for chrome 12 not 11.
Oh, Chicago the musical! Was thinking of Chicago the band. :)
Ah, i only know the musical :)
Never thought I'd hear Journeyer say that
Oh... not so funny.
Seems pretty fine on windows 7 here...
the HD version ran the mac processor up to 70% and more.
:D

I love how I've been volunteered for this
Both do one!
hey, Pat's volunteered to do one as well! :-)
Was going to :)
Mind you I also have to do some start times, and a massive amount of reading else there'll be no Friday Favourites tomorrow..
Got board so read suttons T&Cs
4.2 Your hyperlinks:
You may provide hyperlinks to the Website and pages owned and/or managed by Sutton Images with prior written consent from Sutton Images. Confused?
so, i got a reply from sutton. they said i should read bridget's post. eeesh.
#youcanteducatepork
yes they are.
very.
If they're so keen about it, they should block off hotlinking from Google or whereever. It can be done, right?
robots.txt
Beaks AND Mabel? It's like someone told them I'm coming to Korea!
Does that i think. The fact that they arent using it means they cant be taking it that seriously
:D

Yikes - more problems at Virgin. At this rate, Hispania will outlast them easily
christ!
hands up who isn't quitting an f1 team today?
CFO, apparently? Wonder where he's going. It is the time of year for such things, though.
...or being potentially sacked
Ping! of the Thursday Thoughts variety
http://www.vivaf1.com/blog/?p=6574
i like that you've credited a photographer, but there's no image. where do we stand legally and morally on that score? ;)
true
Good afternoon
Photos are in the spotlight this week aren't they
Twitpic and FOM
twitpic was always going to go that way. we sulked and left for posterous a year ago for that very reason.
Morning/Evening
As Holly from Red Dwarf would say "Whats happ'nin dudes?"
I'm building up credits ;-)
the beeb have this wrong though:
Twitpic's terms and conditions are similar to those of many other Twitter picture services such as Yfrog, Flickr and Instagram which all give those firms the right to redistribute images
flickr requires specific opt-in, doesn't it? or have they changed too?
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-13372982
FOM havent lifted a finger Keith Sutton is a 1 man campaign against the internet which is apparently out to ruin his business.
...I wonder who is going to win
anyone / everyone / sorrywedontmeantotreadonyourtoes
it's mark sutton, not keith btw.
Ah, I thought it was Keith as the website says "Keith Sutton trading as Sutton Images"
twitter account is mark's.
he's also blogged: http://en.espnf1.com/turkey/motorsport/story/48279.html
you can view his images here:

maybe the fact every photographer seems to be ridiculously convinced the world is out to get them is good indication of how cut throat it is. i don't envy Lou one bit :)
they seem to have been shielded from the internet all this time. i guess their little bubble burst recently.
From what i have read (hack looks back?) some of the photographers are pretty loaded.
I guess the internet is a scary place if you make a living from original images and don't have your head screwed on
not every photographer? just most?...
Same for all professionas though. But yes, the big names in F1 pics are likely rewarded quite handsomely. Costs are high too
Aeroplane fixing time
Later folks
see ya bassano
they're just getting worried because of Lou
I like working in a place where most of my colleagues aren't paranoid :)
BBC are wrong re Flickr (as owned by Yahoo). They have nice and very clearly written information on the issue:
:D
hey everyone btw :)
hehe we'll if i ever make it to F1 i'll tell you what it's like to have paranoid colleagues, but they seem to be alright together, a nice community. maybe it's just the non f1 world they don't like?.

same. i've now annoyed mr sutton. however, i shall still blog about it this evening.
can i add grumpy to the list too?
maybe it's just me they don't like.
i'll add 'professional irritator' to my cv.
not all f1 photographers are the same as Mr Sutton?
only if he blocks you on twitter
no it's not just you, i emailed one photographer years ago and basically got told to look for another dream cause i wouldn't make it.
lovely chap.
worries about you taking his job no doubt.
see, they're afraid of lou
Don't you just love encouraging people?
maybe f1 photographers need EU protection. like cheddar cheese.
You should email them again in reply to that email and tell him how far you have got!
Maybe they fancied themselves as mike gascoyne?
yeah i assumed it was the thought of anyone else trying to get into f1.
I feel like Mr Sutton is creating a bad image for F1 photographers (no pun intended) by simply trying to close the issue. If people want clarification on what they're saying they should be welcome to that, twitter is all about discussion no?..
Afternoon guys. Have decided bus drivers are now evil.
What's the rest of the list like?
1) Daleks
2) That Securitity Guard from the Science Museum
3) Bus Drivers?
Wut? No Michael Schumacher? :D
Awww, the science museum security man isn;t evil he's just utterly utterly mental!
Mr Schumi can go on there though ;)
Beat me to it heheh.
aw ok :)
Wait, wait wait, wait
Lou, your mac got dented? :o
I once had to stand around for 20 minutes waiting for a bus because the bus I was already on decided to stop while the driver got out to propose to his girlfriend. Cue publicity shots as the bus company invited the press along for this "touching" moment. Meanwhile we're left thinking "Hey! We'd like to get home guys!"
Bus stops are not romantic places to propose marriage even if you are a bus driver.
I can read your mind. :D
Jobsworth!
This competiton + Mark Sutton = Potential Hilarity
http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150255287633465.373762.292309963464
A bus driver nearly hit me this morning as I walked a pedestrian crossing. No idea how he didn't see me, it was at the bus station!!
I had that but at the bus stop i got off at. He signaled for me to cross after i got off then started to drive as i went to cross!! Evilness.
speaking of image rights, this sucks somewhat
Yo Sidepodders! Go easy on Sutton, they are decent guys only trying to protect their photos.. and they do give people chances....
(I get the feeling its like a sidepod-lynch-mob)
I'm staying out of this. I understand completely where Sutton is coming from, but he approached the issue so badly
not massively, its like a tiny indent. the only reason i noticed it was because i'm ocd with my mac.
I'm thoroughly confused!
The Scarbs / Sutton shindig that went down last night
... yeh, i get the feeling its a misunderstanding on both parts....
My one has a fair few scratches on it .... not too noticable though..
Whenever something half-decent is cancelled I always regret not watching it more often, now I want to watch all 30 years-worth of Taggart..
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-13374238
That seems very un-IndyCar these days, they were becoming nice and open. Maybe this is IMS.
Strictly IMS
Not IMS' fault, I think. More likely we have NBC to blame.
Indy 500 has nowt to with NBC. IMS are very precious about Indy 500 footage, but it's strange to have this scuppered so close to the race
I was thinking that too
Oh yeah I know, I'm just no closer to understanding it. I'll wait for the blog post later...
Rookie Orientation Day at Indy
Is that from 5pm UK time? I'm not too fussed about catching ROP live but I can't wait for the Twitter chatter etc.
We both follow plenty of people who are either there or will be able to report more closely.
No streaming, but starts in 2 minutes
Oh that's early, normal practice starts at midday usually doesn't it? Presumably these guys get the full day then.
It's not a practice as such, just a rookie day
In fact it's already started - track open 30 minutes ago
So this would have happened even in previous years before NBC was involved?
As far as I can tell, this particular project was for this year, but generally IMS still hold the rights for the 500 and ABC broadcast
The Indy 500 is on NBC?
Please tell me Leno is presenting and Letterman still has a team.....
Wait... what? IndyCar is on NBC, but the Indy 500 is on ABC?
The 500 and 4 other races are on ABC/ESPN. The rest of the season is on Versus, which will soon be renamed NBC Sports.
Leno isn't presenting the 500, never has I don't think. I can't spell the name of the guy that presents it, but it's something like Burt Huesmeyer??
David Letterman is entering one car this year.
ABC have 5 races, NBC-Comcast have the rest
IndyCar is on Versus which is owned by NBC, apart from 5 races of which one is the 500
Bizarre arrangement. Are there plans for everything to be on one network?
Normal for US racing
We will not know until next year
True. Suddenly remembered NASCAR's very odd ESPN/FOX/TNT arrangement. Are TNT still involved?
Brent Musberger
In the context of everything that has gone on, sutton goes and uses twitpic...
http://twitter.com/#!/suttonimages/statuses/68663525656100864
I am disapoint
I knew I was close
:)
No idea.
ALMS used to dot all over the place as well, all with ESPN now
i shall blog it later. lots more discussion to be had, but scarbs tried to do the same too earlier.
err, this is me going easy? i've been real nice and apologised twice.
really?
that is almost ironic.
so is sutton to be fair
i guess there's nothing to say he has to be smart to be a photographer. i just assumed he was. big mistake :)

i think lotus should just employ rachel! twice now.
holy crap!
I is downloading this f1 Japan charity appy thing. I don't know what it is, but it's only $1.19, that's affordable :)
really?? didn't know that. we have tons of local competitions here that do precisely that.
me too. :D
Just putting this out there folks; I've got an interview with British F3 driver Harry Tincknell at Snetterton on Saturday - does any one have any questions that they may want me to ask an F3 driver?
:)
Jarno Trulli and Giancarlo Fisichella should start an app store.
"I Am Very 'Appy"
#runs
how did I cope before I was ipadded?
My company is local to their family's fuel business, if we switch to them can we get a discount?
:p
Oh dear...
;)
Ehhhhh... :D
Guys, question for you. Should I get an iPad 2 or should I want and see what the next version is like?
Yeah - does he prefer tea or coffee?
He looks like a tea drinker tbh
The next one will always be better (already there are wild rumors of it supporting 3D). It's just a matter of whether or not you're happy with what they're offering at the current price.
Eheh petrov has the handwriting of a child. So cute.
What's your toughest responsibility as an F3 driver other than racing?
Some insight into the MSA driver development programme and Team UK might be interesting
What are the advantages of BF3 over GP3?
Ooh so does Pastor. I should get to the end before I comment.
(hence why did you choose it)
or euroseries
One more: what results do you think you can realistically achieve this year?
I kind of have that covered in a round-about way.
Both nice - cheers folks
Agreed.
See this is the thing. Will the next one be a little bit better or loads better? I kinda wanna use it to browse, edit photos, read stuff and I'm not sure what else - what are it's other strengths?
Does he expect lower formulae to copy the "gimmicks" used in F1 to improve the racing?
next one is probably a year away. can you live without for that long. if so, wait.
I'm holding out for nothing less than 4D
:D
I'm holding out for a time machine
Aw that was nice. Kamui should get #points for it :)
I wouldnt think now is the time to be worrying about the next one. in december, yes but the 2 has just come out, you may have to wait 18 months for the 3
I dont know if i should have been amused by the photos of boulier and mallaya but I LOL'd
based on his blank photo I can only reach the conclusion that Mallya is illiterate. ;)
He was the only one not to write a comment out of 35ish people
If it's that far away I think I will consider it.
It was 1 year between the 1 and the 2, but the gap between the iphone 4 and the next one may be that long
Afternoon all.
Boss is hiding in a meeting so I can secretly watch live timing of rookie practice http://racecontrol.indycar.com/
Times don't mean much as they go through 4 'phases' sticking to set speeds, but good to see them getting up to 220 already.
Tung is fastest with a 220.477mph avg lap speed.
Hildebrand 218.755
Hinchcliffe 218.443
Kimball (only 16 laps done) 209.706
Mann (currently on her first run) 207.594
Jakes (only 12 laps done) 198.230
He needs to get quicker, much sooner
Actually, he hasn't even passed phase 1 with that speed, surely?
Agreed on all counts, he's got to do 200-205 isn't it? But worth noting Tung has done 53 laps. Presumably 220 is the last phase?
Yes and yes, I believe
I went away from the computer for a bit and now Tung's times have been reset to zero?
T&S screw-up or is he doing another phase?
Screw-up I reckon, they've all gone now
One more giant from the 2000s is having a painful comeback. And I thought Schumacher was doing bad.
From USA Today:
With Federer struggling considerably as well and Kobe's Lakers getting sent out of the playoffs early, it really is a new era, folks.
Not here, but I've read somewhere that his first 9 at Augsta 1997 was 40, and he went on to win. His front 9 here was 42. Hardly massive. Not the same guy as before.
are you home yet?
Not quite.
bah.
Heading in the right direction now though.
chips again then :)
Ah-ha, for a minute there I thought you might be missing me :)
Morning / Afternoon everyone.
Castrol is stalking me with their stupid ideas:
http://www.mlssoccer.com/castrolindex
Another index? Seriously?
thats the original, it begain in football
In Europe maybe, but they just launched it for the MLS this week.
Well not that one per say. It was a global ranking system much like teams are in a similar one
Oh dear..
they only have one idea, and it isn't a very good one.
missss you!
Tiger withdraws claiming injury. The man has lost his mojo.
Great idea :)
I don't get what Castrol gets in this outside of name recognition. It kind of makes them look stupid because people will always disagree with rankings.
not a clue. sounds like an expensive waste of time to me, but it's their money to waste :)
I know we are retreading over previously agreed ranting on how stupid of an idea this is but I am blown away by how bad it is.
Since there is no race this weekend, I can give one suggest of something to watch. This weekend is the first Cascadia Cup match of the season between my beloved Portland Timbers and the evil of the north known as the Seattle Sounders. Best football rivalry in North America. It's on ESPN here, I don't know what this would be over there but might be interesting.
I can't see anything listed for the UK at least
and his wife, and a lot of cash...
:)
Nico Hulkenburg and Willi Weber are no longer working together.
Interesting choice. I wonder who decided to end it. It also means Willi has zero involvement in F1 now.
Just came back from a run - really enjoyed it too: http://runkeeper.com/user/RubberGoat/activity/35238975
MLS is on ESPN UK, but not that game.
Sucker for sales calls, now I'm paying more... but I get a decent data package for the first time ever, and 50 free photo messages, and a new phone, Nokia..somethingorother.. I know nothing of phones so couldn't grill him about Android, maybe ought to have asked about iPhone. But I really like my Nokia and having a real keyboard.

Evening guys :)
Good evening :)
Hiya Marti. You alright?
Yes. I've reading some GMM news...
I've found out that Felipe Massa says the secret ritual he does before a Grand Prix is "have sex. Even though I know it doesn't make me faster! "
Ok...
A curiosity: Today I've been given out my latest english mid-term test.
I've got a 91% :D

That's pretty good :)
Too much, I think hehehe.
That's good stuff :)
As long as Jim Nagbors does his bit, everything will be fine.
Excellent :D
That's an unusual combination...
Figures. Your English writing is excellent!

Good eveniiiiiiiing :)
Bye bye everyone.
See you on Sunday ;)
See ya Marti.
Evening Alison, how goes it?
today is thursday, right?
I'm nic-noc-knackered. Trying to pack for my HOLIDAY but I'm too lazy :P
Yes, but this weekend I'll be off ;)
ah-ha. i thought a few days had gone missing again :)
I wondered myself there if I should be writing the daily or not!
Evening all
Just scanned the last few comments and I don't know if I am more shocked that it is Thursday already or that Mr C knows what day it is
Do I need to be on Standby again? ;)
You gotta give him credit, maintaining order at Sidepodcast hq and knowing what day it is. Very impressive :)
it's thursday thoughts day :)
am just contemplating if i have anything left to say about drs.
Will oblige shortly. Is there a VivaF1 post?
http://www.vivaf1.com/blog/?p=6574
I think he must have an automatic reminder
Right day wrong month. We haven't done that since the season stated
When did Thursday Thoughts start again?
about 7.30am, just for this topic
http://isitthursday.org/
Very handy
My fault I'm afraid
hehe. it's a good question, i just don't have anything to say bar:
woooooooohoooooo!
I should have guessed :)
Aww. Yaaaaay for having jackie back on the interwebs though!
:D
Awwwwe, thank you

*Sad face* Then you are going to miss me chanting "Let him die" if someone on Seattle is wasting time.
Blimey
Yeah it's a rough crowd.
It sounds like a wrestling crowd or something :)
Did you enjoy the cupcakes?
They were awesome. I just ate the last one though :(
Good on ya, can't stand all this rolling around on the floor because someone grazed against an elbow
So the reason why I missed the race live last Sunday was because we were visiting a lovely castle north of Copenhagen. I just uploaded some pics to Flickr but if you look at my Facebook set you'll see pics of the people who joined us too...

They're a lot of them, not all are clean enough for Sidepodcast. My personal favorite is during pregame we start the "You're Going Home in a Portland Ambulance" chant.
:D
You know in Danish Football, when the ref gets it all wrong and everyone gets mad, they shout "HOLIDAY REF!!!" over and over again!
Stunned at how great Lukeh's pictures are in the scrapbook
There are versions of that for every football club in Britain
I can't publish what we say because Christine would never forgive me.
Like all of our best TV shows, all of them originated in the UK. I am waiting for the terrible rip off version of "The IT Crowd."
I think they wanted to do a pilot but it never happened. They tried to do a pilot of Spaced and it went down really, really badly. British humour isn't worth doesn't work in tv programmes so well when translated to an American audience although to be fair The Office did well from the jump over although it became much much more than a version of the UK one obviously.
It did. It was a carbon copy of the UK one, with Richard Ayoyoyoyoyde, Joel McHale and the boss man from NCIS...
So I just had to answer a call from the Danish Statistics department and answer some questions in Danish. It was a very odd experience...
Were the questions asked in English then you had to translate into Danish or were they in Danish? ;)
I hope you were eating a Danish too
Eating A Danish time is tomorrow morning, sir!
In Danish, and answered that way!
So Joe has blogged about the Sutil Incident: http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2011/05/12/a-fight-in-shanghai/

anyone seen this before?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rWd3vgLaA_M
Saw it a few weeks ago and spent the entire video in awe. Absolutely amazing!!!
dedication!
That was long but very mesmerising!
I'm always impressed by people who have the ability to take the time out for that.
good move by hulk to go for the test driver role at force india then.
wonder what it takes to provoke sutil.
It's very clever
@fanvision_f1: http://tweetpic.dev.agriya.com/2p - Came across a McLaren today in a TOP SECRET location!
Sutil and Schumacher are doing their best to get him a drive
they are. schumi will see the year out, though, right?
"Hey Adrian, you run like a..."?
I can't see it
I agree. Not with di Resta and the Hulk out there.
If it were anyone but Schumi I'd say he's out on his ear by July.. but it is Schumi.
the team are gonna sack him, he has to want to leave.
err.. are not gonna sack him. *wishful thinking*
I think the difference now is that he has realised that he is not suddenly going to get competitive and Mercedes have finally grasped how good di Resta is.
The one I feel sorry for is Rosberg. Had he been consistently a tenth faster than Schumacher everyone would be saying what a great driver he is but because he is blowing him away everyone talks about how bad Schumacher has been
how will he fair against paul?
how odd it has Bridgestones.
Bri...idges....tone?
I don't remember this name :)
Yep. I can see them nudging him out behind-the-scenes but it won't be an overt sacking.
Ferrari sacked him though.
ahh, yeah. those boring tyres.
true
Hopefully as badly as Schumacher has against him but I doubt it. I imagine they will be fairly close for the first season but I think with testing di Resta will be better
Bridgestones which are wrapped up, next to the two-seater.. In transit or storage?
:)
I only said odd as when it was used around Bathurst it had Pirellis on it.
They're grooved tyres too.
I think Mercedes grasped how good Paul was late in 2009, which is why he was put in a Force India test position. At that point (around the time Mercedes buying out Brawn) it was the best development place for him because they didn't know whether they'd have to keep Bruno Senna in the test position.
The trouble is that I don't think Michael is the sort of person who is inclined to break contracts. He'll probably see himself as honour-bound to seek his obligations even if he's completely miserable. It's noble of him that he has respected every contract he's signed since Benetton, but right now I think it creates an awkward situation.
Ross may gently break the suggestion to Michael to leave if his performances don't pick up but I don't think anything will come of it, especially since I don't think Ross wants to believe Michael can't become the driver he remembers and Mercedes doesn't want to admit they've thrown millions at the wrong driver.
Even though by leaving Jordan for Benetton he broke a contract?
He didn't break it
So why does Eddie Jordan think he did? EJ was under the assumption he had signed him?
There's an Is It Friday? for tomorrow as well...
OH MY GOD.
I thought it was Michael's IMG representative, Tom Walkinshaw and Flavio Briatore who did that over his head (basically he got sent to bed at a critical juncture and the impasse was broken 2-3 hours later)?
Goodbye sleep. It was nice knowing you!
I...can't...stop...watching..
Sorry...
Well erm that's horrific!
I can't look awayyyy! :)
Schumacher's management had changed one word in the contract before signing it. EJ didn't bother with lawyers so left a loophole.
Bernie told him to shut up and go to bed because Schumacher was so bored of the discussions he said he was going to stay at Jordan
At the school discos, there used to be a cover version of "Glory Glory Man United" for the home side. The fact that this put the emphasis on the wrong syllable of the team name simply made everyone who wasn't a football fan laugh out loud on the dance floor...
Worse, he also didn't bother with proofreading it carefully enough to spot the word change.
I see. And this is the BBC's expert is it?
One of the BBC's experts, specifically on team management. I think they have other experts for proofreading...
How can it be so difficult? It's a white circle on a dark blue background (as far as I can see, at any rate)...
I will never know how he made so much money out of F1
:D
Because he can talk his way out of anything except for a strict logician.
uuuuuugh. you don't here the screaming?
hear, rather.
No sound at all.
riiiiiight. i promise it isn't a white circle on a blue background alia. trust me.
Because he sold his team to some Russians with more money than sense.
My favourite EJ story is one that happened when he was racing himself. He was driving home after a race towing his race car at speed when a blue light appeared in his mirror. He disappeared with the cops and his mates thoulght he would lose his licence this time.
He returned to his car and announced he had just sold his car to the cop.
That is impressive by any standard
It appears to be dancing bacon.
Dancing. Bacon.
OK, I trust you on that one since your internet experience seems to be more representative than mine.
i mean, those colours are clearly in there. along with all the others.
But he sold a chunk to Warburg Pincus before that and he had to build it all up in the first place
i wish he never joined the bbc. i used to love him for stuff like that.
Also because he sold part of the team to a bunch of bankers in 1998 when the team was near its zenith.
Me too. A two minute interview before a race with him was always good but I couldn't believe how bad he was when he joined the BBC
Same. Loved Jordan the F1 team. Must admit I dislike them now!
I don't get any of the others. I take it this is one of the times to be grateful for an inferior internet experience?
Me too. The writing was on the wall when they started using him on BBC News for any and all stories related to F1, long before BBC1 had broadcast rights.
I thought it was hilarious if slightly odd and a bit twisted..
If anyone is missing Max Mosley, he's on Question Time in a few minutes...
...What? Nobody? ;-)
Nah, don't feel like listening to a sore loser...
Sore?
I thought he liked being beaten?
I'm far more interested by this big FA announcement at 11pm....
I wish he'd go away.
First question from Gavin please, sir
"hi max, will you just go away please?"
Easy :)
You could ask about his accommodation
Tweet from him this evening: "I'm in the disabled room at the Premier Inn in Norwich... What are they trying to say!!"
Oh that lenny henry and his pranks
Doesn't mean I like to hear him complaining about being defeated.
That it's the nearest thing they have to a VIP suite on a budget?
Ask him about McNish who is his mentor. What McNish does for him, how they got together etc
They have certain number of disabled rooms and not quite as many disabled customers. I have some so close to pulling the red cord in thebathroom rather than the light cord
I just don't need to hear it any more. I just don't. The man was literally caught with his pants down, got some compensation because it was overblown, lost his job and now wants to restrict press freedom so other deviants can engage in the same disgusting behaviour.
And sorry if I shouldn't have said all that in the first place!
Ohh my god. apparently Nick Mason, David Gilmour and David Waters has a surprise reunion on stage tonight *faints*
where?
Wow!
http://twitter.com/RollingStone
I assume it's a Roger Waters gig that I'd seen advertised...
Oops, I put david waters in the original message. Obviously not. Too. much. awesome. to. realise.
They could have sold tickets for that
ahh, wall anniversary.
Indeed. although I just assumed as it was a roger waters gig and the obvious constant animosity that it'd stay that way
*patiently waits for updates or videos or anything*
The Lotus IndyCar engine will be a badged Judd V6.
http://www.racer.com/lotus-confirms-indycar-v6-turbo-engine-to-be-built-by-judd/article/202716/
turbo
Oooh *gets all nostalgic*
Nice to see the Judd name around again
Or 'Engine Developments', but everyone calls it Judd. :)
They've been in LMP for a while.
"We didn't want to work with a big company like Cosworth, because everyone would call our engine a Cosworth and not a Lotus." - Berro
Everyone is going to call it a Judd.
Maybe not. It's not as if everyone calls Renault, Renault. Oh...
I believe the trick is to pick a company that isn't famous in racing circles, not necessarily a company that isn't big.
Hi, checking in for a moment ...
To my memory, Judd was the poor-man's motor during the turbo era. Hopefully the less ferocious competition in Indycar will enable them to figure more prominently there.
They just never had the budget
PING - Thursday Thoughts - DRS: http://f1numbers.wordpress.com/2011/05/13/thursday-thoughts-drs/
So that's two blog posts and two sets of photos uploaded in one night. And I went for a run too!
good man :)
Well done :)
Thanks. I'm really liking my new theme right now. Feels so much easier to use!
nice typefaces too.
Depends how much everyone is willing to spend
Evening people
Hehe cheers. Nice to have your approval on that front!
helvetica isn't it? best.font.ever.
yup. Sans serif.
looks nice justified.
*oops, stops talking fonts*
:D
My blog won't even tell me what font it's using, let alone let me change it. Suffice to say it is a bit basic.
lucida grande
Never heard of that one...
Daily will be a bit late, sorry all.
*husg*
Not to worry, we can all build up the anticipation :)
I'll put something special in to make up for it but am a little distracted with something else. Silly timing is silly.
*stands down from emergency daily post duty*
:)
Good evening.
Good evening!
Hi Kathi
Unfortunately one of the lambs I helped the other day died yesterday. It was too underdeveloped. But the others are doing good.
How many new lambs today?
jonny noble's lost his mind:
In fact, it is only by looking at [Schumi's] performance in a bit more detail can you understand that what looked like a disaster of Sunday was actually an afternoon that had plenty of promise about it
http://plus.autosport.com/premium/feature/3499/why-schumacher-not-done-yet/
Deluded, sponsored by Castrol?
Shame but I guess that is nature
he must be drinking it
Lost count. But I saved one by giving mouth-to-
mouthnose. It better lives *washes mouth for the hundredth time*He should tell us that the fact he was only a second slower than Rosberg on Saturday was a good sign
bleuuugh!
i mean... wow.
Yuk
Never saw Rolf Harris do that, fair play
No I think bleuuugh is right.
it wasn't his race pace that was the problem, it was the school boy errors!
Sorry to hear that, but good to hear the others are doing well.
Was there a nanoscope involved in the analysis?
several
They never told me about that particular application of CPR in class. I think I can guess why...
Nonetheless, well done for doing it despite it sounding a bit disgusting and good to know it's in the "sheep doing good" category.
:D
Break out the turd polish?
i've done that with kittens - conveniently, you don't have to make contact :-)
Sounds like no-one told Kathi that part
probably trying to be different for the sake of it actually. the basis of the argument was he was doing okay in practice.
Breaking out the wishful thinking - makes anything look like glittering gold, even if it's gelatinous gloop (or worse).
Schumacher fans have always been a little delusional
Admittedly that's better evidence than there's been for some claims of underrated talent - but it's not enough when it really counts.
what? he had to send his overalls to the cleaners after a force india appeared alongside him!
Since when were times in FP meaningful? He was unprofessionally slow in quali and marginally better in the race.
Time-wise he was doing OK in practise. Timing computers are less good at noting startle reflexes...
Since they offered clues to what should happen in qualifying and the race. Should, of course, being rather different to is...
his times were okay in the race, the crash with petrov is what cost him - but if it'd been a rookie crashing into petrov in that manner we'd be saying they're not cut out for F1
Being a second off his team-mate in qualifying in equal equipment didn't help much either. If he'd qualified with Rosberg he wouldn't have been near Petrov to crash with him.
but even that isn't good enough. he needs to be ahead of nico.
it was unfortunate as his Q2 time was half a second better (obviously still behind Rosberg)
but Webber has being doing the same all year, yet Vettel is getting the credit where Rosberg isn't
for me, it's the silly mistakes from Schumacher that are painful to watch - the crash with petrov, the free practice spin... amateur hour
At some point, yes. But at this point I'd settle for being with him because at least that could allow Schumi-supporters the excuse that both may be maximising their current package. As it is, the Schumi-supporters have no visible means of justification with regard to expecting him to resurge this year or next.
also true. i did give vettel driver of the day for turkey*, if that helps.
*reluctantly
Probably because we can't quite believe how good Vettel is at qualifying yet. Webber's refuge is in Vettel's audacity.
Rosberg's been going very well but hasn't stolen any headlines yet, which is why he's not getting the credit he deserves. Also, Webber hasn't been the subject of tall-poppy syndrome in the last two years.
Ping - this weekend's race start times (approx)
http://toomuchracing.com/2011/05/13/start-times-13-15-may-2011/
You think so?
he was fine until he broke his shoulder. he may still be suffering.
Ping: http://sidepodcast.com/post/daily-13th-may-2011
Tall poppy syndrome (TPS) is a pejorative term used in the UK, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand to describe a social phenomenon in which people of genuine merit are resented, attacked, cut down, or criticised because their talents or achievements elevate them above or distinguish them from their peers.
That took longer than planned so the DRS piece will either be really short, wait until tomorrow, or won't happen..
Just booked tickets to see Dave Gorman live later in the year
Haven't seen good live comedy for a long time
[The Mighty Boosh show was a big disappointment]
http://www.davegorman.com/livedates.html
He went through about 8 years of that stage before mid-2009. The media problems he's had since then have been of a different variety (largely underestimation of what he's capable of doing when things go right for him).
I think he broke that cycle with his impressive performance last year, tbh
Wonder what Schumacher has to do to break the media cycle he's in (one way or the other)?
Leave
Well that would be pretty conclusive :D
Who has made a decent comeback since Alain Prost?
In the UK?
Win in Spain, promptly retire from F1, then discover the cure for cancer.
And then just maybe...
Good question. As far as people who have been away for a whole season or more are concerned, I cannot think of anyone, even if de la Rosa's first comeback was half-decent and Pizzonia's second stint was marginally better than his first one.
Jenson Button :-D
He had the advantage of not leaving F1, but point taken ;)
Live comedy is awesome. Last I saw was Shappi Khorsandi and Arthur Smith (a legend live) a couple of months ago.. always vow to go more often, never do.
Lucky here in this small town to have a local venue attracting quite big names sometimes 'unofficially' not part of their big tour, which does mean the set can be a bit short.
We saw Gary Delaney last month (my birthday present) at a local comedy club. He's worth following on Twitter too, as is Milton Jones, who has just joined, or just started tweeting anyway.
Follow both of those
I love Milton
Apparently not just comedy..
http://www.electricpalace.org.uk/music/324-grandmasterflash.html
Grandmaster Flash? Here?
Wow :D
I hear a bit about him on Twitter but not followed him yet (or heard much else from him tbh)
I don't 'do' hiphop much but I'd pay to see him..
Without a doubt one of the best comedians around.
King of the one liners. He wears you down with the sheer number of gags.
He's a genius
:) Good to hear, will follow.
People are welcome to come down, I only have a sofabed spare though
best night ever. fact.
