Even in the year 3000 he can't find it. Now I just feel bad.

Ahhh! It's Friday the 13th! Everyone hide! Actually, don't do that. Come out and enjoy another new day where there's plenty to discuss even if there's not a race on. Have you had a good week? Luckily the weekend is nearly here and we can all have a bit of a relax, phew.

Paddock News

Wanted: Leader, must be able to lead, preferably made of lead - Whatever Rubens wants, he should definitely get and right now what he wants is a pack of Doritos. No wait, that's me. Rubens wants a leader in Williams to guide them back to awesome times and you can't really blame him for feeling like this. I have a sneaky suspicion people will just accuse Mr Barrichello of being a bit broody and moany about things but you can't fault him for actually speaking out in honesty at Williams in tough times.

Blame Sutil. No, literally, this time you can - Bit of an odd situation seems to be coming out of the Chinese GP weekend several weeks ago with the news that Adrian Sutil caused a bit of mayhem in a club and ended up cutting one of the Renault big boys. There's all sort of rumours which I'm not gonna even bother speculating but Joe has a fair round up of everything and gives a bit more clarity and thought to the deal. It's all gone Eastenders round 'ere, I tell ya. GET OUT MA PUB!!! Plus this doesn't exactly help Sutil's crashy reputation does it?

A Good Cause to be Connected To - Good bit of stuff this is from Sauber and especially Kamui Kobayashi for setting it up and funding it. You can purchase an app called 'You are Connected' on the iTunes Store that features handwritten messages and notes from the drivers, team bosses and whatnot of F1 with the funds raised for this oh so delightful 79p app going towards the relief efforts in Japan. It's a brilliant idea and you can find out more here, after you've bought the app of course.

Elsewhere...

Make it snappy or I'll think of an even worse pun - A bit of controversy seemed to flare up in recent events in regards to the use of creative commons licensed images and various photographers on twitter so Mr C has put together this blog post just discussing the whole deal with F1 photography and how the photographers are perceived with their work being shared out. It's a good discussion. Although my knowledge of F1 photography is pretty poor and I usually have to ask Lou about this kind of stuff as that's what she'll do one day and do it very well too. Coz' she's awesome and very lovely. I'm totally not sucking up here, honestly.

Is this the real life? is this just fantasy...racers? - Oooh, we do love a good graph round these parts. There's nothing nicer than a proper pie chart to get stuck into sometimes and as always resident grapher and general statistics genius Gavin has provided us with his latest update looking at the fantasy racers scores for Turkey. I also like Gavin's blog as it has one of his photos from Spa as the header and reminding me of Spa last year gets me all fuzzy and warm inside like a Tickle Me Elmo is tickling me. he's also gone ahead and taken part in the fabulous re-invigoration of Thursday Thoughts over at Viva F1 with his own thoughts about DRS. Good man.

I hope Sam's Town has developed into a prosperous city now - ah-ha, this is most excellent news from those fabulous Las Vegas boys known as The Killers. I do miss the Killers but it seems they're going to start work on their next album in the next week which is, quite frankly, pretty awesome. Although let's go for more of the Sams Town type of stuff and less of the Day & Age nonsense please chaps, if you'd be so kind. Although now I'm just being spoilt, it's good to have them back.

Always listen to two sides of the story, or just the one sentence maybe - Having a bit of a self plug here, I hope you don't mind. Yesterday I thought I'd give the whole challenge of one sentence stories a go on my blog and it was pretty fun actually, it's surprising how much depth you can put into a single sentence even in the simplest of forms. It's also not long left to go with my 30 Day Music Challenge so if you fancy seeing what I've chosen so far here's the big ol' list of stuff so far right here. Sometimes self plugging feels a bit rude but I wanted to share them. It's kind of like getting some time on television and just going 'Hey! Everyone! Come read my book!'. Maybe I am destined for Daybreak.

And Finally

A few little things this week as I don't want to make the daily too long...

How to Make a Radio News Bulletin - Janna tweeted this yesterday and it just made me laugh so, so much. It is actually spot on as well which is mental.

30 Secrets you may not have noticed in Portal 2 - The best game in this generation of gaming just has so much to offer and if you've completed it you have to read that. The article does come with mega super huge spoilers though. Also Stephen Merchant has been talking about his role in the game too as the fabulous Wheatley.

And that's that. To close the daily I'm gonna share this quite incredible stop motion video from the music video for rippled by All India Radio, a video that took 6 months to make and I promise you won't regret watching. Love the little wandering kitty just exploring in many different lights. Stop motion videos always, always blow me away and this is no exception. Lovely relaxing song too.

    #Indy500 update

All rookies has passed the rookie test, bar James Jakes who suffered a mechanical failure during his run.

Jakes has completed 3 of the 4 phases so far.

  • RubberGoat13/05/2011 at 08:38

Jakes has completed 3 of the 4 phases so far.

Just for comparison, how fast was Milka last year?

  • RubberGoat13/05/2011 at 08:38

Also it's great that we have more than 33 cars and a few rookies this year - feels like a proper Indy 500 again...

  • Leigh O'Gorman13/05/2011 at 08:43

Also it's great that we have more than 33 cars and a few rookies this year - feels like a proper Indy 500 again...

Yep - 41 entries. Bump day will be mega!!

    :D

Just for comparison, how fast was Milka last year?

Milka never set a Quali time. She was flagged off for being too slow in every attempt. In practice, she ran between 216-222mph, depending on the conditions (wind speed, etc...), but was generally near or at the back every time.

  • Leigh O'Gorman13/05/2011 at 08:46

There or thereabouts, but the 216 speed was on a slower day, yet her 222 would still have her last. Both Beatriz and de Silvestro beat her easily last year in practice and Quali

I just had my mind blown, I keep the ING Renault bag the 2008 Singapore program came in at work for when I buy groceries on my lunch break and feel too cheap to pay the 10c for a bag at Aldi.

So I've had the bag for almost 3 years and only learned tonight that the logos on the side glow in the dark. It makes so much sense, I mean, it came from a night race. How did I not realise before!

    :D They should've made a glow-in-the-dark livery too.

  • Amy13/05/2011 at 08:56

    probably :D

This must be the first time I've bought groceries home in the dark. Stupid winter.

October needs to hurry up so we can swap back :D

My boss has said its OK for me to come into work earlier on the days I want to run so that I can get home in time to get one in while it's still light. I like the flexibility of my hours.

I set my alarm at 7 this morning to see if I'd feel like a morning run since I missed yesterday nights because of biblical rain. Nope. Alarm was turned straight back off :)

  • RubberGoat13/05/2011 at 09:11

Oh yeah ... the winters here are terrible. I've basically had to start from scratch with my running!

  • Amy13/05/2011 at 09:20

In a roundabout way it's still sacrificing sleep for running but it's not as painful. My favourite thing to do after a run is shower, put my pjs on, then get into bed. Can't do that in the morning!

Thing is though, the reasons against bringing it back are really quite sound.

Extend the number of sets of tyres that can be used on Friday to promote further running - make FP1 & 2 longer if needs be.

  • Alianora La Canta13/05/2011 at 10:01

Extend the number of sets of tyres that can be used on Friday to promote further running - make FP1 & 2 longer if needs be.

They'd need to extend the number of engines and gearboxes allowed too, since at the moment both are regulated on Fridays (partially in the case of gearboxes, fully for engines). Also they'd need to be OK with a lot more bits being flown a greater distance around the world and for more predictability in an already more-easy-to-predict-than-before race...

True too. The other issue is there are no longer any test teams. Is Todt mandating that teams hire entire new groups of engineers just to a few brief tests every year?

The squads as they are already being pushed to the limits with the longest seasons in F1 history - why this obsession with driving people to braking point?

  • Alianora La Canta13/05/2011 at 10:05

Broken people are easier to control, but I think the real reason is that there's a lack of joined-up thinking in F1 (as usual).

exactly why more Friday running is better - it's exposed to more fans while achieving similar goals.

    hello folks.

  • Alianora La Canta13/05/2011 at 10:14

really? how many people have died in f1 from too many races and tests?

I suspect at least one (John Walton, who had a heart attack in 2004 after a jump from 16 to 18 races in the old high-testing regime). These things are difficult to prove as they stress-related deaths tend to reveal themselves as aggravation of pre-existing medical conditions and sudden, unexplained heart attacks. We're already up to 20 races and effectively 6 tests (the straightline ones) and adding testing would make things more difficult in terms of workload.

  • Alianora La Canta13/05/2011 at 10:14

    hello folks.

    Hello!

  • Leigh O'Gorman13/05/2011 at 10:14

That wasn't sarcastic by the way, just metaphorical.

There are lots of examples the world over of people working themselves to oblivion. It also shows scant disregard for the human element involved.

There is a reason why NASCAR has the highest divorce rate in sports for behind the scenes crew.

    as do fans.

    That's quite a selfish viewpoint.

  • Leigh O'Gorman13/05/2011 at 10:15

    Hi Journeyer

  • Mr C13/05/2011 at 10:15

exactly why more Friday running is better - it's exposed to more fans while achieving similar goals.

most people are at work on fridays. why not f1 testing on non-race saturdays?

  • Journeyer13/05/2011 at 10:15

There is a reason why NASCAR has the highest divorce rate in sports for behind the scenes crew.

    Wow. Didn't know that.

  • Alianora La Canta13/05/2011 at 10:16

most people are at work on fridays. why not f1 testing on non-race saturdays?

Because then you have to make a special trip out for them.

Maybe Bank Holiday Mondays? (These would also be after the race so it doesn't make the races themselves too predictable).

  • Journeyer13/05/2011 at 10:16

most people are at work on fridays. why not f1 testing on non-race saturdays?

because it's less practical to spend the same amount of money just to go to a test.

  • Journeyer13/05/2011 at 10:16

Maybe Bank Holiday Mondays? (These would also be after the race so it doesn't make the races themselves too predictable).

ala MotoGP? Not a bad idea.

  • Mr C13/05/2011 at 10:16

    That's quite a selfish viewpoint.

    if you say so?

i loved f1 testing, it was one of the best things about the sport before they killed it. f1 races aren't value for money.

none of the people at the f1 tests i attended look remotely tired or overworked. i'd suggest some saw it as an easy day out of the office.

  • Alianora La Canta13/05/2011 at 10:17

ala MotoGP? Not a bad idea.

Precisely like MotoGP (except that since only a few tests a year appear to be wanted, there wouldn't need to be any in races that are followed by a normal Monday).

  • Leigh O'Gorman13/05/2011 at 10:17

  • Mr C13/05/2011 at 10:17

Because then you have to make a special trip out for them.

of course. that's what i want isn't it? i don't expect f1 teams to test down my high-street. that would be selfish.

  • Journeyer13/05/2011 at 10:17

really? based on interviews i've watched, most drivers find it more tiring because they have to drive more for longer hours (9-5).

  • Alianora La Canta13/05/2011 at 10:17

John Walton didn't look overworked before he dropped dead either.

  • Alex Andronov13/05/2011 at 10:17

    as do fans.

People do get these things backwards... It's the same thing as the photographers in the other thread. It's no use a photographer saying, "I like black and white photos best I will do all of my photos in black and white". And then blaming the customers for having bad taste because they want colour photos. People aren't F1 photographers just because there is such a thing as an F1 photographer (although I'm sure that's what many of them think) there is a job called, "F1 Photographer" because there is a global demand for photos of F1.

This is the same thing as the concerns of the sport F1 doesn't just exist to serve itself. It exists as entertainment (this doesn't mean they should script it, genuine sport is entertaining). People have to want to watch, that is the main point of F1. It doesn't just exist and need to serve itself.

Too much backwards thinking from the people running it methinks

  • Mr C13/05/2011 at 10:18

...in the days of test teams? The ones that didn't go to races?

    yup.

  • RubberGoat13/05/2011 at 10:18

Morning guys. Bit of not very good news about the teams and the hopeful return of testing...

Thing is though, the reasons against bringing it back are really quite sound.

    I agree with this.

Extend the number of sets of tyres that can be used on Friday to promote further running - make FP1 & 2 longer if needs be.

    exactly.

  • Mr C13/05/2011 at 10:18

It would be a special trip out for every single individual involved in producing the test. Considering they're already doing 26 trips a year in-season, that would be a lot of additional stress on each person.

  • Journeyer13/05/2011 at 10:19

...in the days of test teams? The ones that didn't go to races?

    yup.

exactly why the teams don't want it back. in an age where the RRA is king, they can't afford to hire a dedicated test team.

  • RubberGoat13/05/2011 at 10:20

MotoGP style testing or turning Friday into a test day might be the best idea. Not sure how it would tip the balance in F1 - I kinda like the uncertainty right now!

  • Amy13/05/2011 at 10:20

take away my 3 day F1 visits and I'll be a sad puppy. Whats the point in going alll the way to another country for two days :D

  • Alianora La Canta13/05/2011 at 10:20

...in the days of test teams? The ones that didn't go to races?

Which are now no longer possible due to the requirements of the Resource Restriction Agreement (and no, a cost cap wouldn't solve it either unless every single staff member was exempt).

  • Alex Andronov13/05/2011 at 10:20

It would be a special trip out for every single individual involved in producing the test. Considering they're already doing 26 trips a year in-season, that would be a lot of additional stress on each person.

The argument that people in the sport can't do more races or more tests because of the stress doesn't hold water. If people are stressed they need to hire more people. The argument that it isn't cost effective because you need to hire more people does work. The stress part and death part is a red herring.

  • Mr C13/05/2011 at 10:20

exactly why the teams don't want it back. in an age where the RRA is king, they can't afford to hire a dedicated test team.

sure they can. sooooo much PR and sponsor stuff used to happen at tests. williams don't have any sponsors in part becuase they stopped looking after them.

teams don't know what's good for them half the time.

  • Leigh O'Gorman13/05/2011 at 10:20

    yup.

Failing to see the point here. You want the race teams to satisfy you with tests as well as the races and factory hours?

Complete disagree. When those involved suffer health or social problems because of "demands of sports fans", then fans are simply in the wrong.

They can't hire more people due to RRA. They'd end up in regulatory hot water if they tried breaking it and the last time the regulations were attempted to be modified to allow more, it nearly broke the series. Not something Jean Todt is likely to risk.

  • Mr C13/05/2011 at 10:22

  • James13/05/2011 at 10:23

That sort of attitude will end up reducing the level of talent and skill in F1 - the talent will simply end up making other series with more sensible timetabling stronger.

  • Mr C13/05/2011 at 10:23

They could hire more people. The same person doesn't have to go to all of these things.

agreed. the RRA is a nonsense problem that the teams themselves brought on themselves.

    "i can't employ more people because i said i can't"

    well done you.

  • Alianora La Canta13/05/2011 at 10:24

They could hire more people. The same person doesn't have to go to all of these things.

They do in a world where the rules only allow 350 people now and 280 people next year.

This is how negotiations work though surely...

Todt: I want in season testing

Teams: We can't do it because of the RRA doesn't work

Todt: You want to increase the RRA?

Teams: Only if you give us something in return?

    Todt: Like what?

Who knows what? The people who make the regulations are the same people negotiating in the room.

  • Alianora La Canta13/05/2011 at 10:24

    "i can't employ more people because i said i can't"

The only alternative offered would have made cheating compulsory and been illegal to enforce under some national laws that were relevant to certain teams involved.

  • Mr C13/05/2011 at 10:25

    agreed.

  • James13/05/2011 at 10:25

Money. its all they ever want.

  • Mr C13/05/2011 at 10:26

does the RRA run out in 2013, how can todt force testing on teams in two years and not one? if it does, the cost of f1 is going to go up anyhow, why delay things by a year.

  • Alianora La Canta13/05/2011 at 10:27

Who knows what? The people who make the regulations are the same people negotiating in the room.

Several teams desperately don't want RRA increased (pretty much all of them with staff numbers smaller than Force India, meaning half the grid) because it's helping keep them in the game.

You may argue that F1 is the pinnacle of single-seater racing and that if you can't keep up you should get out, but when half the grid objects on the grounds of competitiveness, the sweetener would have to be humungous.

  • Alianora La Canta13/05/2011 at 10:28

does the RRA run out in 2013, how can todt force testing on teams in two years and not one? if it does, the cost of f1 is going to go up anyhow, why delay things by a year.

The Concorde Agreement on which RRA is based runs out in 2013. RRA without Concorde is meaningless from a regulatory perspective.

Todt can force the test system on the teams, but the teams won't let the costs go up otherwise they will use the powers they have to leave F1 en masse.

  • Leigh O'Gorman13/05/2011 at 10:28

  • Alianora La Canta13/05/2011 at 10:29

How can it be 2012? The document only got signed in 2009 and it's a five-year term.

Several teams desperately don't want RRA increased (pretty much all of them with staff numbers smaller than Force India, meaning half the grid) because it's helping keep them in the game.

what they want is a set of dedicated days put aside, where they can woo sponsors into giving them more money, by bringing staff closer to f1.

track walks, pit tours, hospitality etc where the pressures of a race weekend are not apparent. but the cars still scream.

    if only such thing existed...

  • Leigh O'Gorman13/05/2011 at 10:29

what they want is a set of dedicated days put aside, where they can woo sponsors into giving them more money, by bringing staff closer to f1.

That would be of zero assistance to the teams because they still have to have the huge outlay to get all that stuff, which for the small teams doesn't work out because the big teams end up with a better offer.

  • Mr C13/05/2011 at 10:31

    todt said:

"it will be in 2012 if we get enough [support]. It is something that we are going to present at the next Formula 1 Commission which will be on the Thursday in Valencia, and if not then, we can implement it in 2013 without any agreement."

they're going to have to do this, why fight it?

  • Alianora La Canta13/05/2011 at 10:31

Really? I was under the assumption it was 2012

Due to Concorde not applying in 2008 (except for three teams who signed a different agreement before signing the current 2009 one), the due date is 2013.

  • Alianora La Canta13/05/2011 at 10:32

they're going to have to do this, why fight it?

There are ways and means of doing it. Fighting is the only way the teams have of telling the FIA that they are going to harm the sport with a given proposal, so if they believe that, it's what will happen.

I may be wrong... But I can't understand how if say the goodwood festival of speed can have an F1 car run up a hill and sell tickets to the day and presumably, you know, makes money from it... That having all of the F1 cars at a track for a day wouldn't interest people to come along (if it was done right) and it could make money?

If they teams can't organise this I don't think they should be contemplating organising a breakaway series.

  • Mr C13/05/2011 at 10:50

they should do, but the money making is left to circuit organisers and silverstone didn't seem that interested. they were happy with the cash for teams testing there and make token efforts to let fans in.

if f1 teams don't have any sponsors it's all their own fault. they cut off their own lifelines, no-one else did.

  • Bert13/05/2011 at 10:51

If they teams can't organise this I don't think they should be contemplating organising a breakaway series.

I agree with you, but remember Goodwood has fantastic access and hospitality. Not to mention many more cars and there will certainly be a lack of access given by the testing teams.

  • Alex Andronov13/05/2011 at 10:51

they should do, but the money making is left to circuit organisers and silverstone didn't seem that interested. they were happy with the cash for teams testing there and make token efforts to let fans in.

Why is it left to Silverstone?

If I wanted to organise an event at Silverstone I could do that surely?

  • Alex Andronov13/05/2011 at 10:52

I agree with you, but remember Goodwood has fantastic access and hospitality. Not to mention many more cars and there will certainly be a lack of access given by the testing teams.

I take your point, but this is crazy... why will there certainly be a lack of access? The idea would be to sell much better than usual access.

  • Mr C13/05/2011 at 10:53

Why is it left to Silverstone?

teams rent the track for testing purposes. they have a number of passes for hospitality, but they didn't get involved in what areas of the circuit were open, or anything else.

  • Alex Andronov13/05/2011 at 10:55

    Forget previous testing experiences...

What I'm talking about is what the teams should be doing anyway... Bernie has all kinds of restrictions on them... But they own their own teams and they are in an organisation together FOTA. FOTA could, for example, host a day at Silverstone. Sell tickets to it, sell paddock passes for more, have stands from each team, take the motor homes allow people inside. Have signings, etc.

No race, just testing on track, but away from the standard pressures of the race they can give more access.

You'd have to think they could make money from this no? Forget whether they even got good test data.

And then they would have more of a stick to beat Bernie with... Look at us making money away from you...

  • Mr C13/05/2011 at 10:56

I take your point, but this is crazy... why will there certainly be a lack of access? The idea would be to sell much better than usual access.

the last time we went testing, teams shuttered the garages to keep fans out and in barca this year turned up with fake cars for people to photograph.

clueless is the word that comes to mind.

  • Bert13/05/2011 at 10:56

I take your point, but this is crazy... why will there certainly be a lack of access? The idea would be to sell much better than usual access.

Simply, the teams will not want to give access, i.e. have people crawling around the pits and looking at all the naughty bits. Otherwise they will bring extra cars (static display) and have show those.

  • Mr C13/05/2011 at 10:57

You'd have to think they could make money from this no? Forget whether they even got good test data.

agreed. they should be able to.

And then they would have more of a stick to beat Bernie with... Look at us making money away from you...

they would, but i don't think they have the ability to make that happen. teams appear to need a leader, be that max or bernie or todt. historically they've always lost out because of this.

Yes... And look at the last time the teams had lots of power it was when Bernie was in charge of Brabham.

Essentially we witnessed the wholesale takeover of F1 by Brabham.

    Bernie - Ex Brabham

    Charlie Whiting - Ex Brabham

    Herbie Blash - Ex Brabham

    etc etc.

  • Bert13/05/2011 at 11:00

I always liked the idea (ok, my idea) of allowing the teams to bring an extra car to Eropean races. There would be extra sessions (2 hours every day?) where you can only run the third car. Further, only test drivers can drive in these sessions.

  • Mr C13/05/2011 at 11:01

Yes... And look at the last time the teams had lots of power it was when Bernie was in charge of Brabham.

as i said when i first came in... who let the teams decide anything?

I had a quick sneaky look, Finland qualified, hooray!

  • Pat W13/05/2011 at 11:34

I think I've successfully avoided hearing any of their output ever since the UK X Factor has never been shown here and they clearly weren't good enough to make it outside that part of the world. But I'll boo them just for you.

  • RubberGoat13/05/2011 at 11:36

    I prefer Fawlty Towers

    Seen that before though ;)

    Aww, bless. Thanks Amy

    That's good.

Unfortunately I do know what they look like, that hair is reason enough.

  • Leigh O'Gorman13/05/2011 at 11:38

Yes, but where Fawlty Towers is always funny, Jedward are funny one and then quickly embarrassing thereafter

  • Bassano13/05/2011 at 11:39

    That's good.

Bye to lie-ins every other week but that's a small price to pay

It is quite easy to avoid them here if you make it a policy not to watch any ITV channel or listen to Radio 1.

May I correct you my dear man... There is the Bricklin SV-1 (why SV? Google). There are also smaller novelty cars such as the T-Rex. On the other hand Bombardier could have had a great product placement opportunity for the Can-Am three wheeler.

The car was produced in New-Brunswick in the early-mid 70's. The body was fiberglass but the production stability (temp, humidity, etc) and quality control was poor.

It was pitched to the NB government as a job making and industry building project.... so much for that...

Think of it like Delorean without the cocaine.

As luck would have it, I spotted one, all original on the street a few weeks ago.... Oh my was it in rough condition... but it ran.

  • Pat W13/05/2011 at 13:07

I'm reading through the thread now (slowly).

they should do, but the money making is left to circuit organisers and silverstone didn't seem that interested. they were happy with the cash for teams testing there and make token efforts to let fans in.

I reckon the new regime at Silverstone would do much better with it.

  • Pat W13/05/2011 at 13:11

What I'm talking about is what the teams should be doing anyway... Bernie has all kinds of restrictions on them... But they own their own teams and they are in an organisation together FOTA. FOTA could, for example, host a day at Silverstone. Sell tickets to it, sell paddock passes for more, have stands from each team, take the motor homes allow people inside. Have signings, etc.

That is exactly what FOTA should be doing.

  • Journeyer13/05/2011 at 13:12

So basically, what we're saying is, FOTA needs a Bernie?

True. Who's to say Tony will stay forever, though?

christine's ipad2 arrived while she was away, just plugged it into the telly and the full screen thing works perfectly. aspect ratio is correct and fills top to bottom properly.

the setting we've got it on is 'just scan' and it looks pretty damn awesome. will take a picture in a bit.

that reminds me, I was going to test it again since I've updated the iPad. I'm not sure it'll make a difference. Very odd how it's different on every TV :)

Evening. I just done shopping. Spent more than planned. Just like last Friday in fact. :D

    Supermarkets are tricksy like that!

    Supermarkets are tricksy like that!

I spent way less than I planned when I did my shop today. I heart Aldi sometimes.

  • Nick13/05/2011 at 17:15

Ok, soni made my last tweet from the cab in the way to the pub (20 min ride)

I get there and realise I don't have my keys. I literally pulled the seat out the cab.

So I figure I must have been in such a rush I left them at home.

20 min cab ride back and lo and behold they are in the door!

Currently in another cab on the way back!

Very, especially when I went to the expensive one to get the birthday present (decent card and some wine + choc).

Also ended up with wine and choc for me. Well it is payday.

  • Nick13/05/2011 at 17:16

Hehe, this one is in the crown plaza, so it would be acceptable :)

I'll be keeping a spending diary when I get around to it. The plan was to do it now but I'm tired and can't be bothered to do anything at all. :)

  • Mr C13/05/2011 at 17:19

amy have you bought real racing 2?

I'll be keeping a spending diary when I get around to it. The plan was to do it now but I'm tired and can't be bothered to do anything at all. :)

I got this app for my iPad that I put all my spending in to and then categorise and it makes pretty charts and reports for me. I was pretty good at having a rough idea where it was going before but I've gone pretty OTT with my categories with the app.

What I have learned is that I spend waaaay too much money on buying lunches at work, which I already knew, but seeing the actual figures is terrifying and is what inspired me to stock up on $2 cans of soup today :)

Just before each stage is open for competition three course cars are sent through it, with car numbers 000, then 00, and then 0. The zero often has a famous guest driver for publicity reasons.

Before the competitors are let loose on a stage a number of safety cars run through to check everything is OK. The last one is the zero car which goes through fairly quickly too make sure that the stage is safe at speed

Escorts like these. I think one of them may even be owned by the McRae's if I remember Tony Mason rightly.

The first one in the first clip is in the same Rothman's colours Ari carried when he won his world championship. THe car looks identical

All of the McRae's had Escorts. They ran a motor sport show at Lanark the winter before Colin died. Alistair and Jimmy and a few others drove a number of cars including their own Escorts but even in one of those Colin was visibly faster. THat car put up with a lot of abuse but he got some speed out of it

We have a supplier at work called Allen James, he delivers straw..

Some say James Allen delivers a farming product too

Mason said they are still rallied all over the place, and more are being made to do so.

Mason said they are still rallied all over the place, and more are being made to do so.

They are used everywhere because a lot were made at the time and anyone can easily get the information needed to set one up and parts are available. The difference when they were rallying was that there my have been a works team but there were also a couple of dozen privateers running near identical cars and winning with them.

1998 is ages ago though. It's just wrong.

Here's what I know of it: "Italy nil, England nil, and we're there in France 1998."

The digital one isn't the same, with its modern graphics and useable interface.

  • RubberGoat13/05/2011 at 21:46

I can't believe that's still the same as it was when I left the UK in 96!

Oh and we left a week after the European Championships, BTW...

  • Maverick13/05/2011 at 21:46

what you have to understand about world cups is that they get less interesting each time they come around, and it'll continue like that until Pirelli start making footballs

  • RubberGoat13/05/2011 at 21:47

it'd be Mexico '86 for me

    Same here.

It absolutely is. Analogue is being switched off.

  • startledbunny13/05/2011 at 21:51

Ah OK I read this story a while ago - perhaps Ceefax is being phased out?

the analogue broadcasts are being phased out across the uk, so ceefax goes with it

  • Maverick13/05/2011 at 21:51

Ah OK I read this story a while ago - perhaps Ceefax is being phased out?

the switch to digital is happening a region at a time, and analogue along with ceefax turned off as they go

  • startledbunny13/05/2011 at 21:54

this was planned years ago. i remember the days before france '98, when the rollout of nicam stereo took it's sweet time.

The frustration when you tried to play it at someone else's house (relative or something) and you couldn't find 'Reveal' on their remote

  • startledbunny13/05/2011 at 22:01

there was this experimental thing they did where you called a phone number, entered a page number, then a sub page number, you could alter the pages immediately with the phone keypad. was total rubbish, and i didn't get the billpayers permission either.
