Herald... ‘hear’ald... hear... get it? Well I tried.
Hello once again lovely people, welcome to Friday. I promise to make today a positive day of awesome, and less disgruntled man. In fact, did you know that today is the birthday of commentor all-round nice guy Chris? Happy Birthday, Chris! Have a fantastic day sir. As for the rest of us, we’re also going to have an awesome day. There’s plenty of goodiness to share so let’s crack on with some serious linkage. Oh, and if you are having a bad day, just remember it’s easy to make everything OK. See? Easy peasy.
Paddock News
Living it Large in Manchester - As if having a bank holiday isn’t awesome enough after the Belgian GP, those lucky people ‘oop north’ (did I say it right, RG?) will be treated to a McLaren showrun with Jenson Button running the McLaren up and down the streets of Manchester like Ryan Giggs, Ryan Giggs, running down the wing. Oh, formula 1, how I miss thee so very much.
Jacques Villeneuve – Professional Sillyman - So according to expert Jacques, who may I remind you told us the BAR would win races in it’s first year, ol’ Kimi Raikonnen was lucky to win his world championship. Funny definition of lucky you have there Jacaques. Although to be fair, have any of you ever read his F1 Racing pundit page? Utter pish posh piffle. You’re funny, Jacques.
Elsewhere...
It’s all go go go in Sidepodworld - If you were to head over to that lovely Homepage that Sidepodcast has you’ll see that a really rather genius new little widget has appeared giving a daily question that you can find the answer to in Christine’s 365 Stories of F1 books. Awesome stuff. Whilst you’re around these parts, why not check out the first part of Stitch’s mid season review of the drivers? It’s like being back at school! Mid season parent’s evening and all that. Luckily Stitch doesn’t include Science teachers. And not even that is enough – as there’s an absolutely brilliant post about the F1 shows that never were on Channel 4 and it’s just awesome. You have to get involved and post your own ideas just waiting to be shared.
Stop making such a racket - I can never get enough of tennis games and EA have announced, finally, the sequel to their surprisingly good Grand Slam Tennis. There’s always a disappointing moment and here it comes... although the original was on the Wii, this one isn’t. Xbox and PS3 only it seems. Although it does look rather awesome. Very, very awesome. Just a bit of a kick in the teeth for those that bought the first game, really.
Inni or Outie? - Ohh, Sigur Ros, you utterly amazing people how you torment us with your teasing ways. I do love it when bands do this and just throw out teasers to get you tantalised and excited for whatever the hell they’re on about. But it seems something new is coming from Sigur Ros entitled ‘Inni’, whether it’s a DVD or a hat or a new album, who knows. I hope it’s an album in a hat. But I am VERY excited just from that one video alone. Whatever it is, I want it!!!
It gives you something else to do, that’s a Plus - Unsurprisingly, it seems the time has arrived for games to pop up on Google Plus. At least, for some people at the moment, not everyone, in true Google style. There really doesn’t seem to be much to do on Google Plus so I suppose it adds a bit extra but still, not even everyone can get these and we’ll see what games become available over time. I hear it has Angry Birds, which is good as it only really ever appears on every single format every created and known to mankind.
And finally...
Just a few little things to round it all off...
- RG has a new look on his blog! Make sure you pop in and have a look because it’s really rather nice and slick.
- The Humble Indie Bundle 3 has finally closed, with it’s pay-as-much-as-you-like deal for 7 quite fantastic indie games and managed to raise over $2 million dollars in a few weeks which is pretty awesome really. Good stuff.
- Check out the recent LA Rising gig in all it’s many hour glory b being played in a super fast quick time video thingy in less than 5 minutes. I like the fact that I can tell when Muse are on. How very sad.
- And finally, how about a few bits of Premier League blogging? I’ve written up my lengthy look at the new season and RG too, with the greatest blog title ever, has put up his thoughts about Wigan Athletic and their relegation chances.
And that’s it for another Friday. I hope you’re entertained enough for today and have a brilliant final day of the working week. I’ll see you in the comments!
Absolutely love Sidepodherald. Genius
Links are currently borked, working on it!
All fixed, capn.
rockall. genius.
*hugs lukeh*
I'm relatively drunk ATM, so I'll keep this brief. Thanks Lukeh for the happy birthday, and I'll make sure I return to this site properly in the near future :)
Yeah, oop north is right for you lot daan saaf. Ta for all the linkies.
Now, you should do your homework before posting stupid things... It wasn't Jacques who said BAR would win races on its first year as part of the F1 Circus... It was Craig Pollock.
Hello Jackie. I think I have built everything that I want to say, temperature and distance wise, about parinign the Canadian Grand Prix with U.S. grand Prix in the Southwestern Strates. Sending my Magnum opus to you blog.
Love the newspaper Lukeh
Not quite sure what you're responding to Simon, but if JV didn't say that he came awfully close: http://atlasf1.autosport.com/news/1998/744.htm
pssst he was responding to the daily. Not in words I would have used myself however :D
Brilliant, thank you :-) sending it on to dusky
I still can't get that bit.ly bundle thing working today so I've found an alternative, it's called Bridge URL and gives you a slideshow of the url's in your 'bundle' I've added the first couple of swap shop posts to it, what do you think? http://bit.ly/nv6OVx
I always thought JV was the lucky champion myself. He walked into the best car in 96, and in 97 managed to screw up the whole year and still win. Then he went into the wilderness and lost his edge.
Kimi was a much more worth champion I reckon.
It's weird... I read that paragraph... And then after I'd read Simon's comment I went up to Lukeh's daily and read it again and both times I could have sworn it didn't say anything about BAR in their first year... But now I can see it easily!
agreed
I think he was actually much better in 96 than 97. A lot of that probably had to do with the pressure of expectations (which wasn't really present in 96).
And the fact that Damon Hill was a better driver and team leader than HH-F was, so he was motivated to do better?
Actually, I always thought that JV was the designated team leader when HHF replaced Damon. If anything, HHF's poor form should've inspired JV to do better because he was undisputed #1 in the team.
That's kinda where I was going. I don't think JV handled being the team leader well. Williams made a massive mistake getting rid of Damon Hill.
An oldie but a goodie - Karun explains the HRT wheel: http://i.imgur.com/IDQLX.jpg
It was always a dangerous thing to set a 1997 driver line-up based on 1995 results...
Which brings me to another point: one reason of Williams' decline was that for them, the driver was always secondary to the car. This meant that they either got mediocre drivers, or more often, didn't fully maximize the talents of the good drivers they had.
That's because they got stiffed by Alan Jones' sudden retirement and vowed to never value a driver that highly again. I'm told they passed on Schumacher too, whether that was serious or not...
If I recall correctly, I remember Frank saying that they did also make a bid for Schumacher's services for 1996 and beyond. What we don't know is how much they offered him.
But even so, I think that they should've been able to adapt to the changing circumstances. The only way I see them coming back is if one of the top drivers (Vettel? Hamilton?) would be willing to do a Schumacher by going to Williams and rebuilding everything there around themselves from the ground up. I'm not certain if Frank will agree, but it may be one of the last options left to keep the team alive and well in a post-Frank era.
Who would do that with Williams now? The thing that people forget with Schumacher is that Todt had to arrive the year before. And when they brought Todt in it was a sign that the Ferrari management had finally got serious about returning to winning. They suddenly injected a lot of new money and got serious.
I think the management of Williams would have to change first, to precipitate a driver coming to them to build the team arround them.
Agreed. And the big money too.
Thing is though, they have a very good driver in Barrichello...
Agreed.
That's another problem. Who would agree to manage a crappy team and bring them back to competitiveness? And even then, it would probably come with a lot of money involved - something Williams doesn't have at the moment.
So basically, their shopping list is:
1. New major sponsor (or increased commitment from current sponsors)
2. New team principal (using funds obtained from new sponsor)
3. New lead driver (ideally with salary partially or fully paid for by new major sponsor)
4. New lead driver's people from old team (may or may not include technical director and chief designer)
He's very technically sound, I agree. But while 2009 proved that he may yet have the talent to win races and a title (maybe, sometimes), he doesn't have the ability to galvanize a team around him and pull it up the grid.
There are plenty of people willing to do that, for example Colin Kolles...
Maybe not.
Now there's a name worth being bandied about. But if they do get Kolles, that would pretty much spell the end of HRT.
Do you really think HRT have much longer? Didn't his role get reduced there anyway?
True, true. But we've been saying that HRT is done for some time now. Yet there they are, pretty much shadowing Virgin Racing - who has a much bigger budget than them.
Who knows? Depends how close to the line they are in terms of finance.
morning all
Where's this new 'podding casting' technomology to be found? I don't see a new debrief episode :( Or is it MrC the disgruntled listener who was saying my podcast was too long ;)
I believe there was also a small matter of Damon demanding too much money.
This will depend completely on what the new owners want and how they approach the issue of owning an F1 team.
Finally got around to watching Sunday's IndyCar race last night. Not a great race, but my word, Bob Jenkins does my head in.
Well he was a world champion. I think in the long run they would have been better to keep him, personally.
This was long before he became Champion, because this was being discussed in '95 when Schumacher was, quite frankly, whipping him.
True. But now that I think of it, how would Damon have performed in a Williams-Mecachrome? That was always going to be a stopgap measure with the team having secured BMW engines in 2000.
He was whipping him in 1995, for sure. But according to Damon Hill they got rid of him behind his back and strung him along until it was too late to sort out a proper drive for 1997.
Probably just as badly!
What I've always wondered is why Williams felt the need to secure their 1997 lineup right away. Their cars were the best of the field (Schumacher notwithstanding), and I think they were in a position to wait and see.
Really? I remember that Hill had the choice of Jordan and Arrows for '97 for a time before he signed with Arrows. He was convinced by Walkinhshaw that the programme with Yamaha had great potential.
Sounds right. I also heard that he had the choice of Jordan and McLaren for '98, but McLaren's deal was performance-based. He ended up choosing Jordan.
Yep. I wonder what Damon was thinking when his car broke on the warm-up lap at Melbourne in '97.
Seems like I have a different recollection to you then ;)
In the end it doesn't matter too much as everyone came out of it looking foolish!
I heard that about Villeneuve too, except it was only for McLaren and only for 2000.
probably the FUUUUUUUUUUUUUU Cartoon!
I think Leigh is right. I remember reading about Ralf commenting at the start of 97 that he thought Damon was ducking him. :D
He most likely is and I'm not saying he's wrong.
Has anyone else heard the rumour that Anonymous is going to bring down Facebook on the 5th of November?
Ughhh... I wish that "group" would just disappear. Hadn't heard that one - to be honest, it's difficult tell what's may happen and what's a hoax.
Yup. Interesting thing to do, issuing an open threat. No more element of surprise.
Just saw the news about the possible return for Qualifying tyres next season. Also Franchitti topping both of yesterday's practices for this weekend's IndyCar race .
it's fake, Anonymous is not planning to do this. It's easy to bash on hackers, but in my opinion it's not too bad there's a vigilante group out there on the interwebz. Sure they've crossed the line a few times perhaps, but for instance their wikileaks related hacks (attacking companies that refused tranferring payments to wikileaks: visa, now paypal,..) is a good thing.
The PSN network hack sure made a lot of gamers angry (I dont have a PSN), but it also serves as a nice wakeup call to companies that online privacy is something they should put more effort into, instead of squeezing us dry of any personal info we got so they can sell it on.
my friends boyfriend is taking her on a mystery holiday for her birthday and she's just found out she's about to fly to Thailand. Last week he told her they were going somewhere domestically so she's very very happy.
I'm jealous, where do I find one like that :D
It's on the list.
Outside. :D
Ooh, I'd hate that.
How well do you know your Formula 1 history?
To learn about this and more events that helped shape Formula 1, get your copy of That'll be the Day: 365 F1 Stories (Part 2).
Probably just want to scare people?
Brilliant daily, Lukeh. Love the newspaper... which is not something I've said for a while :)
I would too, it goes against every organisational body in my bone.
I do like the 'someone else paying for my holiday' part though :)
I actually went outside and met her boyfriends brother last weekend, no sparks flew though!
mmh, boyfriend, surprize holiday to exotic location...something tells me he has a ring in his luggage ;)
I told her that! She went 'nooooo' but I wouldn't be surprised.
You could actually be right, now that you say that. :)
I did it the other way around, went to an exotic location (working) on my own for 4 months, returned home and proposed right there on the spot at arrivals...I hate people staring lol
Awesome. Good that he told her now, unlike when me and my wife went on that surprise trip to Australia and she almost got detained because she couldn't answer any questions (as it was a surprise)!
Agreed. Just happened to one of my friends too!
he gave her four hours notice, I think because she was convinced they were going to the Sunshine Coast and it's actually going to be cold up there this week so she was probably packing all of the wrong sort of clothes :D
It's always cold and rainy there!
I should add that I am in Blackpool so I shouldn't throw stones ;)
Noticed this earlier on, looks really interesting and yay for a management sim!

The F1 management game in over a decade - about time.
About time eh!
And I know I'm gonna end up buying F1 2011, even though i didn't like 2010!
Discovered the one universal truth about students from around the world: We all ate Pot Noodles!
A part of me misses Pot Noodle.
Our Canteen is being renovated, so one of the options was Pot Noodle :)
not me sadly, had one and absolutely hated it. Made me sick and allsorts
Not once as a student did I have pot noodles
whats pot noodle?
a pot of grease :D
(With accompanying noodles)
Instant Dried Noodles in a tub that you add dried vegetables and flavouring to, then add boiling water and wait a few minutes.
you know all those bits that gather behind the refrigerator?
well someone had the great idea of sweeping them, putting them in a pot and then selling them to people so they could add boiling water to them...
Aww :(
Lucky you!
What are they called in Australia then? I just spoke to an Aussie and he knew what they were and I had them in NZ.
Was it my palette developing or did they get worse over time?
on the plus side it made me appreciate proper noodles more :)
too busy drinking if I vaguely remember rightly
Guinness would fill you up!
I'm sure they are getting worse. I haven't had them for years and the ones I had today weren't great!
Good stuff!
I remember that in Red Dwarf, after days without food and faced with just a tin of dog food and a pot noodle, Lister went for the dog food
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pot_Noodle
After a while I migrated to Super Noodles
Of course eventually I discovered actual noodles were both cheaper and nice and you can customise them. :)
Ping: http://www.f1minute.com/news/teams-and-drivers-think-positive-for-the-rest-of-the-2011-season
Hmmm... twice this week, Google have notified me of "unusual behaviour" on my e-mail account. Has anyone had hassles this week? Could be something to do with G+?
ah yes, i've never bought the tub ones because theyre dearer than the cheapo packets. not that i like noodles anyway :)
Speaking of Noodles, I really miss my old office in Wellington because it was right next to this awesome Noodle Box place - 2 minutes down the road and they made the noodles fresh right in front of you.
They used to make so much it was impossible to finish them!
Interesting: http://twitter.com/#!/LeeMcKenzieF1/status/101969048140656641
time for a new password
I've reset it three times, but still got that message today.
If you reset it three times that might be why?
I'd been prompted by Google to do so.
The local Chinese does a lovely chow mein
My hotmail account is a reactivated one and I think the old user tried to get it back at some point because I kept getting asked if I wanted to reset my password..
*Chinese takeaway, not some random Chinese man :)
I see. Time for a new email address then.
I am sure he does too ;)
I get that message after I've visited my email via Alistair because GMail thinks I've been visiting from America so they flag that as weird :)
Damn. That's irritating.
:/
My Dad tried to access his facebook on his iPod in my house and it locked him out. Have you been through the process of unlocking your facebook account lately? Someone accused of a crime would have had a lesser interrogation!
oh yes, my facebook did that to me when I was in Malaysia. Talk about ridiculous!
For those who don't know BTW, you get asked all of these questions, then a captcha, then 5 pages of 6 photos each of different people who you have to identify!
Jumping through hoops of fire, anyone?
Why not!
it was the identifying people that scared me, I was very relieved once I saw they were multi choice.

oooh, does she have a kindle?
I have seen photos of her with books before. I'd ask but I'd be too scared she'll be one of those 'ebooks are evil!' people and then I'd go right off her :D
ahhh. too risky. although heikki was desperate for an ipad.
plus last time she was photographed with a book I decided I should read it, so I downloaded the sample on my Kindle. Not that I've read that yet, and it was about a year ago. My 'samples to read' folder has 76 samples in it though, it could be a while.
I want to know so I've asked but I won't tell you if you don't like it ;)
:)
:D
ooh, when did you open your twitter janna?
*adds to list*
A few weeks ago. I've decided to see how much spam I get then make a decision about keeping it open. Not too bad so far.
good to hear :)
yaay! I love open twitters because I just can't follow everyone I want to read or my head will explode
What do you mean? Open as in unlocked so you can add them to lists?
That's what I've done, unlocked my profile
bingo
Yeah lists saved twitter. Can't figure out how best to use it on the iPhone though. And does Tweetdeck work on the iPad?
Good stuff.
theres a tweetdeck ipad app that i had for about 3 seconds before I decided I hated it and uninstalled it :D
I'm using the twitter app for both iPhone and iPad right now. Are there any that are better at handling lists? Specifically for iPad, as I don't do much tweeting on my iPhone...
twitter.com in mobile safari.
I use Tweetdeck on my PC but TweetCaster on my iPod and Android Phone, it has a good list function
My Tweetdeck on PC was overloaded with lists, it kept hitting the API limit so I had to remove them :)
I've got the iPad app but it is unnecessarily clunky
Thanks for your suggestions - I'll try them later.
Oh Mr.C, I tried the Kindle reader on Safari and it's really good!
indeed. annoying that the UK store isn't integrated like the US one, but i do like it.
Ah but I have to use the US Store anyway so I didn't notice...
perfect :)
Is F1 Racing on the iPad worth subscribering to?
hmmm. is that on zinio?
it's not optimised, it's just the magazine saved as jpeg's. you can buy one issue and see for yourself. gp+ or evo magazine are much easier to read.
Yes.
Thanks again. Hey, one more question. I tried to download a PDF of GPWeek, and it worked fine on the iPad last week, but this week's has no pics. The PDF works fine on my PC but in iBooks and GoodReader it's just text and black squares. I tried contacting Dimitris (F1Enigma) but no luck.
Anyone seen that happen before=
very odd. have you tried rebooting the ipad, could be a memory issue.
I rebooted it last night when I charged it, so I'll try it again later...
The thing with the iPad though, it's really lovely and all that, but I don't use it as much as I thought I would. It's still easier to edit photos on my PC for example. Mrs. Goat is using it A LOT though - games, reading, browsing, shopping. I feel like she's getting the most out of it...
same here. i use mine to read gp+ while christine uses hers most of the day.
It's really good for showing people photos though.
I use mine all the time. Not sutevi need two though ;-)
Keyboard can be rubbish though!
I've always wondered is it worthy its price though?
Reading and playing games. And that does attract a lot of people.
depends if you have a use for it. the proper question is - can you get a better device for less money.
nope.
Yes !!
:D
http://ticketing.southbankcentre.co.uk/find/music/gigs-contemporary/tickets/video-game-heroes-60710
It's a brilliant web device. You just need to find the use.
I read, play games, make notes, watch iPlayer, listen to music, browse photos, check email, keep up with comments, blog, play with photos, pretend to make music, browse recipes, make shopping lists, attempt to learn yoga and tweet.
For me, it is worth every penny.
I only use mine for F1 live timing/map..
Good stuff.
Me too. Haven't used my laptop in months.
you get so much use out of it, i feel sorry for your under-used mac :)
Hehe. Haven't quite figured out how to do F1Minute on it yet though.
Depends what you need it for. I haven't used my netbook since I got it, and my laptop has now become a video playing machine.
It's really slick - browsing is great, reading is really easy on the eye, and there are some great games too. Email is easy too.
It's really simple to use and there are lot of great apps - but it basically is a big iPod Touch. However the touch gestures are a lot easier to get your head around than a trackpad.
The other week I blogged while a passenger in a car and posted using my iPhone as a wifi hub - which was simple to set up.
I haven't used it much for videos yet but I plan to soon. I'm also going to give garage band a go at some point because it does look very interesting.
The downside is that it's great for editing stuff when you want to do one item at a time. For bulk use, say a few hundred pics, it would just take so much longer than on my PC so I didn't bother.
So I would say it's more like an appliance than a computer, but in some ways that's really good and in others, not so good. They are a lot easier to use than a netbook though!
ooooh, that sounds like a challenge!
I think in time, mine will be. Between Mrs. Goat and I it is right now.
I've never put a photo on mine but I use it alll the time
We were showing people our holiday pics, which was great. I imported them using the SD Card adapter. It was a pain removing them all though!
Exactly. You need to get over the fact it's not a computer. I still have a couple of those, I just don't use them much
I'm using both at the moment. I'm commenting on my laptop and playing a riveting game of mahjong on the iPad :D
I got mahjong the other day! Spent hours playing it
I am playing a free one but when it prompts me to pay the $2.99 for the full version I so will :D
Mrs. Goat and her mum are ADDICTED to that game. Once they start, they play it for hours!
I have to find something to do while they fix the tiny tower bug so I don't spend hours staring at slow sales :)
What bug is this? If I pay attention to my Tower it earns money, but I don't have much time to play it and it's starting to get too big to be enjoyable...
in the most recent update, which has awesomeness by the way, theres a bug in that the sales slow down to half the speed while you're looking at the tower, but if you leave it to run in the background they continue as normal
Oh I see. I need to reorder my floors like you have.
i even made a spreadsheet :D
Oh Christ.
in numbers?
noo, i have not bought that yet.
i totally should, i can claim it as tax deductible!
it'll be all kinds of awesome once the magical cloud goes live.
Really?
mmm, cloud + numbers. lovely.
certainly. write spreadsheet on iphone and it'll sync automagically to your ipad and desktop within 5 seconds.
I'm really curious to try that one out. I'm gonna get words, because I have found I can type really easily on it.
I need to cach up with the latest.....
Also, I still haven't found a really good blog editor yet.
http://www.apple.com/icloud/what-is.html
as a non-iphone non-mac owning person thats not much help to me :D
A related sort of question, if you change to the digital edition of Autosport, is it cheaper, and can you access it from whatever device you want to use? I don't want to get an iPad-specific one in case I want to read it on netbook or main PC but I'd still like to be able to read it on the iPad.
Their website isn't very good at explaining the options.
I'm only going to switch if it is cheaper, if it isn't cheaper I'll cancel the mag and go website-only.
Ooooo that's cool
It says it works with PC as well.
It's just a PDF
According to their website I have to pay an extra €40, but my sub runs out in January so I'm gonna wait until then.
would Microsoft actually let it play nice with Excel?
Heh. Well MS own a bit of Apple...
They don't anymore, I think.
you can get to your documents via a browser too. download or convert to PDF to share and print.
Since when???
Okay, should be easy enough then
Boom - new Dallara F3, but a possible return of chassis competition next year. All I can say is "yes !!"
http://www.racecar-engineering.com/news/dallara-reveals-2012-formula-3-design/
Boo, we'll see if they make an offer when I get around to ringing them..
ta
we did the same.
the problem with the autosport pdf is that it's in portrait format and spans two pages. so you can see half of it with readable text, or the whole thing with tiny text.
what is this printing you speak of? :D
I like how it says it is a very different F3 car, yet to me it looks like any other F3 car :)
oh yeah. it has a funky website?
https://www.icloud.com/
woot!
I do like this iTunes cloudy whatnot, I know a lot of people were like 'ooh I won't do that because then Apple can see what I've pirated!' but sometimes I like to listen to music on my iPad but I don't want to actually store my music on there and having to turn on my computer first is a pain.
Much higher nose section and higher cockpit sides. Can't tell about the rear. I'll ask around during the week to see if I can get any info.
Well I never asked specifically but I have to upgrade my PLUS sub and it said €40. I'd rather sub to GP+ instead for that.
Oh, that doesn't make much sense.
Still, if I cancel it I can reallocate the money to GP+ and Daily Sportscar..
gp+ is at least in landscape.
the best magazine i've read on the ipad is stuart's EVO magazine. i have no interest in the content, but the layout, features, usability and design have set a high benchmark for everyone else.
I do approve of them moving away from having to sync iPads. I detest plugging it in.
Same. And it takes so long!
That is annoying
my iTunes has recently gotten into the habit of freezing when I sync it. Good fun.
A bit of news on Justin Wilson and the new IndyCar
http://www.indystar.com/article/20110812/SPORTS0107/108120369/Pit-Pass-Wilson-s-height-puts-him-ground-level-an-Indy-Car
That's awful. Feel so bad for him :(
This sent a shiver down my back:
"...Wilson found it strange that he didn't feel the impact through his rear end; the initial pain was between his shoulder blades..."
Fig rolls doing the rounds at work - yes !!
:D
That'll be good. iTunes on Windows isn't always a nice experience.
It doesn't seem all bad, I'd love a couple of weeks lounging.. I'm sure it hurts though
He must spend the next two weeks or so mostly lying down to keep pressure off his spine.
Agreed! It's a horrible jerky time consuming process!

She clearly doesn't think ebooks are evil but baby steps towards converting her to be without paper entirely.
I forgot about the cricket. Just checked that's quite an impressive score. :)
*hugs*
I like how one England player has scored more than 11 Indian players put together.
What's needed is a book but instead of a bit cut out to hide a key, have a bit cut out with a screen in it.
:)
Love it.
I have noticed that having an SSD for the application seems to make an enourmous difference. I don't know what that means for what's wrong with it - but it seems to make an enourmous difference
is that on lion or snowy?
What's a one of them? :)
a usb thumb drive, but bigger.
I like how Extras is closing in on India's best batsman
ah
He's doing well. :)

On the PC I mean... I think that's what people were talking about. iTunes has always been not that bad on the Mac, not compared to the PC version.
I now run SSDs as the boot drives on all my machines.
But I am running Lion full time
Found out today that our dishwasher has a fault that could mean it could burst into flames - will be undergoing a free repair next week.
Meanwhile it's like being part of Renault's pit crew... rubber gloves and fire extinguisher on stand-by.
Yikes - that's a lucky call
I think back to all the times we go away for the weekend, switching on the dishwasher just before we leave
:o
crikey
at least the Bosch contacted us, much more convenient that calling them after the fire brigade has cleaned up
ahh. never occurred to me that you'd put windows on that machine :)
or rather an ssd on your windows machine.
We had that happen to a Washing Machine. Twice.
http://rubbergoat.wordpress.com/2009/06/09/are-washing-machines-like-cars/
There's an SSD on my windows machine... I don't run windows on my mac.
I do use my desktop PC quite a bit so having an ssd on there is very handy.
Hi folks.
I'm doing the daily tomorrow so if you have any links I'd like to include them.
Let me know.
OOoh oooh I've found a really good F1 website! It's here: http://sidepodcast.com
:)
Oh! It looks good, I'll have to check it out! :)
what a lovely homepage they have
Did you see they have an App for F1 news and a book you can buy from Amazon?
They even have their own radio show in connection with http://gigglesradio.com/
I like to start my sidepoday with a plug
That should be a new slogan/tagline
Start your sidepodday with a plug
:)
No WAY. Wow, talented peeps over there.
legend.
links for the daily. manipe has a round up of the 2010 grid here:
http://www.manipef1.com/news/articles/12522/

err... 2012.
thanks, Back to the Future man.
I thought you had introduced some retrospective thing that Idid not know about
sidepodtime
Looks like no change then. I think in some ways Renault could affect that though. Even if they are 100% convinced that Kubica is coming back which is a very big if they need to have an experienced driver available in case he suffers a set back under the loads of an F1 car. I would have thought they would want a potential front runner as back up at least. Given his injuries I would be amazed if Kubica was able to perform at the same level again. Sutil to Renault?
Gets us every time. We need to put someone in charge of fixing it. Probably Amy since it gives her more problems than the rest of us. She can sort time zones at the same time
Enjoy a little something from the Sidepodcast back catalogue.

I thought I was the only person in the world who played mahjong. The trouble is I can only play one game at a time and leave it for a few hours because if I don't I keep remembering pieces I removed in an earlier game and screwing up the game I am playing. I need something that dumps the cache in my brain at the end of each game. It is a fascinating game though
Fantastic
doh!
I swear SC is developing a sense of humour.
If you've an Autosport.com plus sub, this is worth a read. Mike Rockenfeller talking about his crash at Le Mans and his recovery in the few weeks after.

coming up... 2008 rule changes
gets better - already taken an Indian wicket!
anyone going to Renault World Series at Silvers next weekend?
My old school team could do better than India right now.
Leigh is going one day and Lou is too assuming her mother doesn't find an excuse not to drive her.
Jackie and I are going on the Sunday
I'm tempted by the freeness and the urgent desire to get to a racetrack, but less so by having to use a full tank of quite expensive fuel and the fact I'm largely broke right now..
I'll be going to the Le Mans Cup race in September regardless.
heheh
for jackie: https://twitter.com/#!/bitly/status/102056511634812929
Sehwag out first ball in both innings, have to wonder why he bothered turning up
I play mahjong, but not the solitaire type. I play old Hong Kong mahjong (usually played in groups of 4). More here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahjong
some live iphone magic: http://www.ted.com/talks/marco_tempest_the_magic_of_truth_and_lies_on_ipods.html
I had no idea that version of the game existed. I wonder if there is an online version
There should be a few somewhere, but they're somewhat hard to find. Still, playing it in person is always better. Nothing can replace the noise when the players shuffle the tiles, and the texture of the tiles as you try to feel them out before looking at them. :) Winning money off it occasionally helps, too. :D
He is really good
Winning money is always good
U2 on the iplayer on the off chance that there is a U2 fan around

I'll say. :O
oooh.
Ganassi must spend a fortune buying bodywork/wings etc from Dallara. At least this weekend Dario has a decent livery
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/93724
It looks like a Minardi!
I haven't watched it as I have only just found it so I don't know if it is worth watching
Just when I thought it looked fast you ruined it. At least they didn't stick red bits on it
Hey, the original Minardis weren't too shabby...
Occasionally they were OK but they generally were poor
Ping: http://sidepodcast.com/post/stitchs-mid-season-driver-reports-part-2
The original ones were awful. Their "golden era" was somewhere in the middle: 1990-1993. They did manage a good haul of 4th places in that period, and a front row start too.
Thanking you. I'll go check again to see if it's working
Nope the fish is still pan bread :-(
i remember it when it first happened. also noticed the bbc reused a buch of that promo footage for glasto a few weeks back. #budgetcuts
I haven't seen it so I will watch it later
Am surprised they want to bring that up again after the trouble they got into.
Shhh!
hehe. was a whole fortnight of bbc + u2. pirelli have nothing on the promotion u2 got for nothing.
:)
We need a U2 + Pirelli tie up to get maximum coverage
:D If it helps, they were also black and yellow then - with some white.
Just stumbled across this: http://grou.ps/ DIY social networking.

I love this month;s Sky at Night. It's on the current mission to the Vesta asteroid. Loads of good stuff in it
http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b012cs8s/The_Sky_at_Night_Dawn_at_Vesta/
About JV, I have noticed that looking at the points when Raikkone got his Driver's Championship, he did win by one lousy point. over Hamilton and Alonso, how where both at 109 points. I do realize that on countback Kimi would have gotten the Driver's championship on more wins, But with Two retirements for Kimi and just one each for Hamilton and Alonso, You can just as easily say that Massa's win in Spain or Hamilton being worse than a blind man at Nurbergring (He came in 9th) really won Kimi the title.
Lucky ? Maybe, but the really lucky champion has to be still Keke. Still, skill can only take you so far. Just talk to Chris Amon about how far skill and talent can take you....
You can argue all champions are lucky. To be champion in a year with 11 race winners and so much carnage as 1982 as Keke was certainly was lucky but then he was lucky Jones and Reuteman retired when all the top drivers were signed up or he would not have been in the Williams in the first place.
Then there's Mansell if you want to talk about Lucky Champions. The Williams was an awesome car in that Patrese blew away the rest of the field. So well, The battle is between Mansell and Patrese, looks like you have to bet the house in order to win a pound on that one..... Mansell had the luck of landing hte right car that year.
Still, it is the easiest pound you will ever make....
Even more luck to Keke.....
.
Mansell was lucky because he retired and was persuaded to change his mind and when he returned from Ferrari in 1991 Patrese outqualified him in the first 7 races. Had the 1991 car been the championship contender rather than the 92 car he would probably have retired again
Journeyer 12/08/2011 at 08:13:11
I always thought JV was the lucky champion myself. He walked into the best car in 96, and in 97 managed to screw up the whole year and still win. Then he went into the wilderness and lost his edge.
I think he was actually much better in 96 than 97. A lot of that probably had to do with the pressure of expectations (which wasn't really present in 96).
I do not know. 1st issue, he was/is the son of an F1 Legend, so there is the is he as good as his old man stuff.
In a word (and I think Steven will agree with me on this), no.
Ok, I'm confused. Audi and Peugeot compete in the ILMC, but not in LMS?
Will the ILMC still have an LMP1 class next year, when LMS drops that class?
Won't there just be a single endurance world championship next year?
Correct.
ILMC becomes WEC and keeps LMP1 because the manufacturers want a world series. LMS drops LMP1 because they all went to ILMC/WEC.
Right, the WEC, I guess replaces the ILMC?
You've managed to make me even more confused ;)
Yeah... but LMS still exists too
thanks :)
I wonder if ALMS is keeping its LMP1 class.
So... what happens to them, exactly? With a new GT championship coming too, who races there?
Rumours I've heard suggest they'll do what they did a couple of years ago and allow LMP1 and LMP2 in a merged class.
(personally I think LMS should do the same)
I think quite a few people are asking why the LMS will keep going and who'll be in it. I think it is because several teams don't have the budget to fly around the world.
I suppose if the WEC only has a couple of rounds here, a couple in North America, a couple in Asia, maybe one in South America... then that means there is room for a Europe-only series again.
New GT championship? Is this to replace GT1?
I think had he not been Gilles's son he would have been rated higher than he is. He is judged against an impossible standard to beat
I think so, yes. I recall hearing something about GT1s and GT2s being equalized so they can compete against each other?
He was in a similar position to Lewis as a rookie and like Lewis he succeeded
Good evening, I am alive and back in my own home (booo!) I think I've left my phone in London (BOOOO!)
Oh yes and GT3 maybe too. Ratel clutching at straws because nobody could afford to build GT1s when you're only allowed to race 4 of them and Le Mans dropped the class..
At least you are cheerful about it
Fair point.
Mind you one of the first things I learned when I started on the internet was how rabid the Canadian fans can be about Jacques Villeneuve, so it is fun to wind them up.
I'm in a good mood. Just slightly concerned about waking up for work without an alarm....
I don't like the concept of a champion not "deserving" the championship they won. If someone deserved it more, then they should have stepped up and gotten the job done.
The facts are that he did not make a complete fool of himself like Michael Andertti, and so people will not think you are crzy to take on an indycar driver again, desparate, maybe, but not crazy..... (Alex Zanardi, Seb Bourdais, Scott Speed? and some others...)
Winding up people on the internet can be fun? Never thought of that
Has Nick abandoned you to go to Blackpool?
He's in York doing manly things with other men. I have escaped from blackpool.
That's more information than we need
York... Where men are men and sheep are nervous!
Stag do.....
I'm trying to psyche myself up to go to tesco for an alarm clock before I get too tired. So annoyed!!
It's a good excuse to take Alphonso out
I drove all the way up from London yesterday. Then back from Blackpool this morning. Plenty of exercise has been had!! :D
Driving isn't exercise ;)
Alphonso is my car :P He's had lots of exercise.
Best give him a chance to sleep in, in the morning then
ahh, it's definitely exercise for your car!
What kind of car is Alphonso?
Fiat Panda ♥
Awesome.
Edgar Wright spreading the word of Senna makes me a happy bunny :)
Love how well it's done. So deserved.
What a movie. I was so lucky to see that too!
ex-Brabham is not a great clue since he only drove one race for them
Success!!! I have found my old phone and charger to use as an alarm. Tescos is off the menu :D
Problem solved
clues vary to cover fans of all experience... in theory.
talking of which, the teasers have been running for a week. are they annoying yet?
nope
ooh good. shall we leave it up to commenters to yell if/when they are?
sounds like a plan
No. Not at all
The teasers weren't annoying but in the first few days when people were posting guesses, always being told to buy the book to find out was a bit annoying.. I wondered if that was why people stopped guessing.
tricky, because we're not planning on putting the answer anywhere. if we don't say 'find out in the book', isn't it a bit like saying 'ha, well we're not going to tell you anyways'.
That's not why it was annoying. If you post a clue people naturally want to guess and be left to work it out for themselves, to reply with a comment 'buy the book' it sort of ends the conversation and sucks the fun away.. maybe just for me though :)
I understand the point Pat is making and I kind of agree with it. I can understand that being asked a question that you are not going to be told the correct answer to is annoying
it's like talking to my children.
:D
Anyone goint to WSR on the Sunday, I have some spare tickets
Start here

okay, how's this...
How well do you know your Formula 1 history?
The book That'll be the Day: 365 F1 Stories takes a look at significant moments or quirky happenings on this day in Grand Prix history. Can you guess what event the following describes?
I'm going, either with my Niece, or with my Sister my 3 yr old nephew.
Hoping whoever goes with me will enjoy it, and not scream the place down.
yes we are. we have less money than greece.
Much better
That just means that Greece has hyperinflation.....
You have less debt to though. You are not rich enough to be in that much debt
you're the one that I want.
oh greece, not grease, sorry.
Hyperinflation means they have a lot of money.
It's just that the money is worthless :)
cool :)
Evening folks
Hi Leigh
Someone "Hopelessly Devoted" to Grease ?
hehe
in a word no :)
Hi Jackie,
How's thing's this evening?
I'm good thanks, you? daughter is panicking about losing her cat though
And they have the Mercedes bear may help them
That's good.
Oh dear.
I'm not too bad - just a little tired
So if we do not have a name for the Mercedes Bear how about leaving it Mercedes? I do member coming across a girl named Mercedes in my travels....
Maybe if she finds the cat it will have Alison's phone
Sounds probable.
That is how the cars got the name in the first place. Mercedes was the niece of Benz or someone
Of course, cats with opposable thumbs. Totally plausible.
However if the phone rattles, and smells of catnip, the cat thief thing is possible.
Its been shared like crazy on Twitter but if you've missed it you have to read @lookingspiffy's post on David Purley
http://t.co/WEhAyoW
Such a great read.
He is a great subject to write about
I do seem to remeber that you said that I had too much time on my hands when I said that is very possible to name a girl after a F1 race car provided that you use a Japanese family name of Iishibashi, or in English, Stone Bridge....
Really nice post, shame there's no retweet button
Agreed. They can be a great discussion starter I reckon. As long as nobody chimes in with the answer straight away.
Could there be a follow up post with the answer, say an hour later?
Could you have someone review the books or maybe a competition to win some might generate more interest in them?
I don't think the answer should be posted, eventually they'd all be there. :)
nope.
there is that. there's also the work involved. if it's isn't easy, it'll be dropped :)
Hmmm, guys, they are trying to get you to buy the book. The question that is posed is just the hook, after all.....
competitions are tricky because they'd be limited to specific countries (just the way ebook distribution works).
all reviews on amazon or itunes are massively appreciated though.
indeedy.
Is steven around? i need to blame something on someone ;)
What did I do?
what did he do now?
it's cloudy here! :(
That is always a problem but you have hours yet
I suppose I assume most of us here already have it.. :)
And if they don't, why not?
Oh, perseids? I forgot
Best just before dawn apparently
Don't they know it's a Saturday morning?
hehe. pretty much what we said last week :)
the work has gone into the social network promotion, if it can be easily reused in the comments that's a bonus.
at least it's warm tonight. Am considering sitting outside with my glass of wine and waiting for the clouds to pass.
I was going to set up my camera and do some shutter speed work with my new tripod and shutter release. but i can't be bothered to time my sleep around cloud :(
http://www.nasa.gov/connect/chat/perseids_2011.html
They struggle with sidepodtime to. At least its not a school day
Cloudy??? we have had about 3 months of rain in less than a month. The ground is completely saturated and loads of buildings were damaged in the rain about 6 weeks ago. I'll take 'cloudy' right now for sure!
Grrr.
It's tough getting the right shot and sometimes it means not sleeping
Just think when you want to get that perfect shot at a grand prix and you have to time yourself around to the cars pr weather else. Practise makes perfect ;)
ohh goodness i had no idea!! hope all is alright with you!
that doesn't mean not sleeping when you've had pretty much no sleep for the last couple of nights tho.
i'll see. may just try get some star movement on a clear night instead.
Nah it's fine really. Just an annoyance TBH as it's not really summer now. Been the worst out of the 5 summers I have been here for.
We have been having a great laugh with my parents because they were going to come visit in October and I said "don't come then, the weather is really bad. Come in July, it's nicer!" and they had 6 days straight of rain!
Has anyone actually had a summery summer this year? Seems to have been awful everywhere
Pat W 12/08/2011 at 22:07:36
Hmmm, guys, they are trying to get you to buy the book. The question that is posed is just the hook, after all.....
I suppose I assume most of us here already have it.. :)
And if they don't, why not?
Errrr, irs on backorder? :p
It has eh.
Try http://www.meteogroup.co.uk/uk/home/weather/radar/united-kingdom.html You can get radar data for your local area and you may be able to spot a gap coming
We have had a 'Green Winter'.
I'm sure there's a definition for what Summer we've had but seeing as this is a family friendly website... :)
We had 2 decent weeks at the end of July then winter arrived at the start of August
Brown Summer?
Summer Hasn't Involved Temperature?
looks like the rain is set to come in soon and stick around until tomorrow. Ah well, it's been needing to rain all day. perhaps next year.
Rain in 5 minutes, box box box for more wine
*shocked* *drops can*
I'd run to the kitchen, but last time I did that I got trapped in the door frame in a freak accident. I'd probably drop a glass or something
Well, see everyone around. I think I got up too early today.
Your kitchen crew need to practise more.
or move all obstacles/doors out of the way beforehand.
:D
Bye Jordan
see you jordan
Something I linked to earlier on G+. I haven't seen this in years, but whatever you do, do not try this at home...
It was a motorbike run around the Parisian perimetre in 1989 completed by The Black Prince, who a stunt rider (emphasis on the "was"). The deal was to break the 35km run as quick as possible and The Black Prince completed the distance in 11 minutes 4 seconds, averaging 192 kph - in morning traffic, not long before rush hour.
A few others have gone quicker, but only done so in the early morning with no traffic. Shocking, just absolutely shocking.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9t7zOj2oX8g
(really gets going about 50 secs in)
for jackie: https://twitter.com/#!/bitly/status/102122499902423040
I have been on the peripherique at 7:30 am and it is way busier than that. That time simply wouldn't be possible during the rush hour
For all I know, it could be 6am - hard for me to tell as I've never been to Paris? There's no date for when it was filmed. Still a crazy attempt all the same.
but on GTA....
The commentary says 7:30
OK, so technically you can do it at home
;)
I know no French, so I don't know. Who knows - there's nowt there for me to say it wasn't.
reminds me for some reason of the film that was used for a snow patrol video.
http://youtu.be/fk1Q9y6VVy0
That was based specifically on "Rendezvous"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LlPfilnRDuI
The legendary C'etait un Rendezvous. I was so gutted when I found out the truth about that, that I refuse to repeat it and ruin it for anyone else. The rumours and theories were much more fun
I'd read about this in Autosport years before. I think it was Nigel Roebuck who said it was one of the best Car films he'd ever seen.
Could have been a different columnist.
Most writers like him said that. Took me years and years to find a copy. Then the internet was invented and solved my problem
Thanking you :D Here's the linky http://bit.ly/o4tXyp only 3 so far hopefully there will be a few more over the weekend
Rediscovered this classic video of the bestest cover ever and I just had to share it again :D
venus!
So good he's his own backing singer. If there was a true definition for 'amazini'...
He sings like Madam Edith from Allo Allo
Even the band name is... Deep Sunshine..?!?
bet the keyboard player knew how to play axel f
Wow - memories of how all those types of gigs are just awful... every single time.
This is a better version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NV75qGY7jBk&feature=player_embedded#at=88
From here: http://www.upvenue.com/music-news/blog-headline/1104/it-s-the-final-countdown-covers.html
I was at a gig where nearly every member of the audience was on the stage, except me and my brother-in-law. i wasn't drinking. he wasn't stupid.
there weren't that many people there though to be honest.
hehehehe.
I can't look at an orchestra cover and ignore the Portsmouth Sinfonia. Just so so bad it's beyond amazing :D
This is my favourite live cover.

Heheheheheh!!
I want this album. I would be in hysterics for days.
Days!
It would be alarm just so I could wake up in a good mood laughing :)
:)
I was organising a gig a few years back and an associate from a small label asked if I could put one of her bands on at the start for a 15 minute set.
Trusting her previous experiences I said "OK". They laid a few dreadful Counting Crows-type songs before doing the worst version of Marvyn Gaye's "I Heard it Through the Grapevine". Needless to say I didn't do her any favours ever again.
Mr C, I just sent the daily, if you're around. I'm going to look for a pic to see if I can find something.
i am, but so is christine, so i delegate responsibility to her :)
I sent it to you both, just in case, being a Friday night. :)
looks grand, much appreciated!
thanks. I wish I could find some good pics that are creative commons. I always struggle with that. :( I'm looking now.
doesn't look like it needs it, unless you have anything specific in mind. plenty of content.
I thought you had publishing rights so you could post things yourself
ooh, if kai doesn't, she ought to. will sort.
Ok. I just sent a few along in case any of them will work.
Thanks
No, I don't. That may be more responsbility than I want to take on. :)
You guys have to play this! http://www.kongregate.com/games/iLegendary/experimental-shooter
:D
Never seen it before. Will try later
tried playing, mesmerised by the music *does jazz dancing*
What's the deal with that lot? are they special?
They were all musicians on instruments they've never used before
I just read about them. That's an ace idea. What would they have done with Garageband?
William Tell Overture is my favourite: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PLsFGgfvx8o&feature=related
Brake it probably
