Right, I know it’s going to be hard to grab your attention away from a finely poised Test match between England and South Africa, but there are medals still to be won as the Olympics enter week two. Today will be the last day to see rowing at Eton Dorney and swimming at the Aquatics Center, with a total of 4 gold medals up in each. The athletics kicks up a few gears with the heptathlon, women’s 100m and men’s 10,000m. Away from Olympic Park, Maria Sharapova takes on Serena Williams in the tennis, and Team GB will be hoping to avenge the women’s death by beating South Korea, before their inevitable defeat to the mighty Brazil in the semi finals. There’s also medals to be won in badminton, fencing, shooting, weightlifting and the torturous triathlon, so if you still fancy watching England get bowled out for 238, it’s on you.
London 2012, Day 8
Published by RG on
From the London 2012 daily email that I don't remember signing up for:
"Get ready for the gold rush... Super Saturday is one of the most eagerly awaited days of London 2012 – 25 gold medals will be won in 11 different sports, including Athletics, Swimming, Rowing, Track Cycling and Tennis."
this is getting too hard, too much on right now, watch onething miss out on another, cycling, athletics, triathalon, rowing and the rest its impossible to keep up with every thing.
Jess, cycling, and rowing this morning.
Ohh, and the triathalon. Then the sailing at ~12. #toomuchsport
https://p.twimg.com/AzcJNs9CMAAh4w8.jpg This is from last night. I think it means Newt Gingrich's moon colony wants to compete separately at the 2020 Olympics.
blade runner about to run in the 400 m heats.
not long to go in the womens triathalon, about 10 minutes
Have only managed to watch the running section of the triathlon, which sort of makes it a one-Athlon. exciting though!
yeah me too.
are they done yet? Last I heard kiwi was 6th
Almost done. she's still sixth, I think, all by herself,
GB dropped down to fifth as the front runners pull away.
A photo finish after all that distance!!
what its a tie is it?
A proper dead heat.
cheers I can't watch from this train. Almost at Wimbledon, my first ever centre court tickets woo!
stii not sure who has gold
NZ finish 6th and 10th.
I think they both do.
Oh no, Beeb saying Spirig got it.
yeah thats what they are saying here too but the times are the same, still havent seen a replay of the finish
Watching the replay of the finish, the best bit is that both crossed the line at the same time, dragged the tape with them and both got tangled in it and fell down at the same time too!
and no new gold for Australia. I learned this morning how much of my tax dollars have gone on their olympic programme. Money well spent.
thats strange, photo finish but the photo was abit after the tape was broken. i say give them both gold
early days still
The photo finish is as close as I've ever seen, but I think they're right with Spirig. She has more of her leg over the line.
its not about the leg though, its all about the torso and its relly hard to tell who is first, arms and legs etc dont count
But if the torso is a dead heat, why can't they look at the rest?
Either way, Mr C will be happy that Switzerland now have a gold.
not sure, but they just went through the rules of triathalon and mentioned that legs and arms dont count its the first part of the torso that touches the tape.
Looks like a bit of rowing now.
It's raining on the river too.
They've built this race up massively and yet I'm still not 100% sure what it's called. Four men in a boat, anyways.
Jess doing well too: Jennis improves to 6.48m in final long jump. Sensational. Gold getting closer and closer
gb v australia agian. come on the aussies
I've been watching athletics on 3. Just switched over for the rowing. Leading!
Amazing crowd.
GB win, but the small gap to the Aussies never wavered. Well matched teams.
got that early lead and held it the whole way. more silver....
ive never known why there is a water jump in the 3000m steeplechase
I missed the triathlon but I saw the heptathlon long jump, the last Olympic champion had 2 failed attempts and an abort which she only got 3m, Ennis got 6.48 and Kat long-name 6.19.
And in the 400m heats, the last Olympic champion pulled up with cramp!
Cycling was early rounds I think so I missed that.
is that leshawn merritt? big news if he is out.
Yes. They said he picked up injury in Monaco a few weeks ago. They interviewed him and he was having training and work on it from 8am to 10pm to recover, but he pulled up after 50m or so
cheers that is big.
another rowing final on now
Greece just collapsed
ironic isnt it
This is a more exciting race, but my god those rowing commentators are awful.
I admire their enthusiasm.. could use some more detail rather than superlatives
China second, Greece third.
Apparently it's history in the making.
"You're going to be on a stamp tomorrow." :)
How many rowing gold is that for GB now?
"I know this isn't the Oscars but I want to thank my mum"
4. NZ are next on 3 and Germany 2.
GB have 8 rowing medals in total, next closest are NZ and AUS with 4 each.
http://www.london2012.com/rowing/medals/
Love the look of shock http://t.co/LimV3n22
That's gonna be one of the iconic moments of this games!
excellent. I heard yesterday we were "leading the regatta" but I figured that would stop as out strongest rowers were all racing yesterday
Hopped back to BBC3. Liz McColgan's daughter is racing in the 3000m heat, which makes me feel old. She can't be old enough surely.
Some Jessica maths from @tomfordyce: Jennis javelin pool rescheduled a touch - now gets under way at 1325. Ennis jav PB more than 7m down on Chernova's, but 290pt cushion = 13m+
you have someone in the final now, storm and taylor
SHe's very tall!
And lots of wild hair. That can't be very aerodynamic.
whats going on in the rowing, gb should be disqualified
What did they do?
we have Emma in single sculls in 20 min too but they're not the favorites like the pair and Mahe were
Oh so something broke. Apparently they are allowed to restart if it happens in the first 100m?
one bloke slipped of his seat so they stopped rowing, so everyone stopped, as the rules say you can get a restart if the boat breaks, but it didnt so lets see what happens, dodgy but fair enough they may have gotten away with it.
That's the rule I think, because there was a big furore about that in the boat race.
The McColgan lady is a bit scared of the hurdles, I think.
She finished ninth and said she was disappointed with her time, but thought the position was about accurate.
it was the wheel that goes on the runner from the seat. it was jammed. They've been allowed to restart as it was under 100m and they're doing great!! 3rd gold pls boys!
Gavin's final. GB v Denmark v NZ
oh my goodness this is close!!
team gb 2nd, not bad boys :)
Denmark win.. what a close one, GB silver NZ bronze
100m heats now.
right, Andy and Laura's match is on atm. so far it's all with serve. :)
the french are protesting,as they should, gb will be dq
protest dismissed gb keep the silver
why will the be dq? They were within the rules to fix the issue and then the race restart? right? Otherwise the officials wouldn't have let them start at the restart? right?
did something break or did they just get a very bad start and claim something broke, here they are saying he just slipped off his seat after they made a very bad start, then tried to make it look like the boat broke, doesnt matter now though. gb keep the silver and thats the way it is.
we saw pictures of them with screw drivers etc trying to fix the jammed wheel under the seat (which caused him to slip off the back of it)
hehe, Aussie commentators sound bitter. Wonder why.
:D
Cool photo. AP's NASCAR/IndyCar writer is covering the Olympics. https://twitter.com/JennaFryer/status/231714557196902400/photo/1
yeah after he ripped the seat off, they had to make it look like something broke or they wouldnt have been allowed to restart, doesnt matter though, got the silver and it stands, fair enough.
hehehe!
ohh that is cool!
yaaaayyy Murray/Robson break the Aussie team in the first set.
Love that Murray really can't deal with playing doubles :)
He can't deal with it?
Bolt-spotting.
well an easy ball came to Laura, and he ran up trying to take it, and she just smashed it and won the point. He clearly couldn't deal with not being in control. bless him.
no the aussie commentator is a legend of the sport who knows all the tricks, they are actually quite happy to see gb do well, or at least appear to be. they are getting pretty excited every time they win.
I see Rowan Atkinson joined Twitter: https://twitter.com/RAtkinson1955 :)
Bolt, Bolt, Bolt.
commentors, just said they need people to go online and get into centre court (i'm guessing buying tickets)... well i just checked, there aren't any tickets! crazy olympic people.
Nice
its bolt time
Poor GB chap is in the lane next to Bolt. That's a tough draw!
blackadder reunion?! ohh my! :)
does bolt count as a guy who's name is the same as his job?
Hello!
Just escaped an incoming apolcalypse outside, and mr bolt is on tv.
Is it really him? I can't see the blackadder thing being true..
Pretty much everyone has a camera pointed at Bolt.
Dunno, I saw it retweeted by someone else who seemed to believe it. Blackadder not my thing so I'm not sure about that!
Bolt didn't seem all that impressive
Good start, probably not pushing it massively.
he just took that easy, walked half the way.
I want it to be true! It's just every rare interview he's done he's always stated he sees no reason to make more after how it ended. Would be fantastic though
walk in the (olympic) park,
Had a good look to his left at the end.
I'm always more convinced about Twitter accounts that start "ooh, Twitter, how does this work?" Because people making fake accounts clearly know about the Twitters :)
a very good point :)
That really was just a jog!
One of the guys at the back pulled up with an injury. Oh dear.
Everyone around me is eating crisps. I want some. Definitely bringing some tomorrow
but if you're sipping 'No.1 cup' then you're much better off than having crisps ;)
oh no! the aussies have broken! :(
£8!!!
pringles (official food of olympic athletes)
still better than crisps ;)
#confidentialfromlordcoe
nice good to see they have broken 'aussie' lauras serve. hehehe
ruuuuuuuuuun!!!
incredible :)
Since when did team GB get good at sprinting?
running for the bus, innit.
geez powell looks strong
Hehehe!
Jess Ennis walks like a duck while she's measuring her javelin run up.
Pole vault continues to look terrifying
Faster than UB.
I have a cup full but it's too cold to drink out!
it's never too cold ;)
not sure about the time but he looked strong running down the lane. they are all just doing enough to get through to the next round today
I decided to have a quick read through the comments and read this as Jess, crying and rowing.
#BlameLou
its blake time, to me he is the favourite for the gold
I'm in the shady bit the sun never gets to, using a rain coat as a blanket to keep my legs warm. Do not need drink with ice in it!
Bolt - 10.08
Powell - 10.04
Blake - 10.00
jamaica have a lot of fast people
wooo! Muzza and Robson break back!! ehehheee!!
boooooooo
Great start from the Chinese guy.
sorry! yesterday was an emotional day, i didn't cry as much as the winning rowers today if that helps :)
especially in a bobsleigh.
some people say they don't believe
jamaica dey' havva EVERYTHING team
ahhhh! we were doing that the other day! hopefully it'll warm up for you soon! You have a good view tho! so even the cheaper seats are good seats! imagine what the view will be like tomorrow! :D
looks like we're going to a tiebreak..
as the 3rd set.. not in the 2nd.
There are a LOT of heats for this 100m!
3rd set it is! or.. champions tiebreak, as the commentators keep saying.
seems like there's a lot of tiebreaks in these matches
yes Andy, keep playing, play all the matches, muhaha
i'll take a gold in whatever form. he has a silver at least! hehe besides.. Andy could do a delpo and give Fed a run for his money ;)
dwain chambers qualifies with a good time
I still don't think he should be there.
i thought f1 was bad at inviting cheaters back. maybe its all sport.
It's a bit mental they let him back
come on team GB!!
it scares me they are down a mini break. come on Muzza!
British Olympic Association gave him a life ban but they were over-ruled. I still think they should just not have selected him.
The differenceis he still has the advantage he gained by cheating. He used drugs to build his body and he still has the bulk he added.
thought gary lineker had a cold, turns out it was jonathon edwards...
Vertical sky diving??? Plunge head first to the ground and then pull the chute. Seriously. Oh and there were 138 of them in formation.
oh tiebreaks are so stressful.
Why is Shirley Robinson wearing a black life jacket? That is not going to be easy to spot in the water. maybe it is slimming or elegant or something
match point team GB... just need the mini break..
YESSSS!!!! Murray and Robson into semi finals!!!!!!! :D
awesome!
Looks like Andy is having a good Olympics. Only his brother held him back
really thought Hewitt was gonna get that..
silly jamie :)
back on court later today.. i hope Murray goes for a proper rest!
someone get that man a cup of tea
Mixed doubles final today?
semi finals.
He's playing again today??
I guess at any tournament mixed is always the one that gets delayed
And I guess if he wins that match he has to play the mixed final tomorrow as well as the singles
yep another mixed doubles match. This match would have been yesterday if it hadn't have been for that pesky Federer taking so long to win ;)
yep! if they win, Muzza has the pressure of 2 finals tomorrow! .. but i'm guessing if they don't win it, he'll still have the mixed doubles bronze medal play off too.
busy busy day for him tomorrow!
5live: Jess Ennis throws 46.61m in her first attempt at the javelin (not ever, obviously).
Schwarzkopf threw 51.73
Jess Ennis's 800 metre race is at 8:52pm tonight. One not to be missed
Had my pimms for lunch.now I'm sleepy.
liquid lunch is the way forward :) you'll be nice and warm soon enough!
Jess is doing a fab job :)
cant stop at just one, or six
I want nandos and there's none anywhere near here. just not good enough
There's 3 in cardiff if that's any help
http://www.nandos.co.uk/restaurant/stratford
isn't that just a posh kfc? #notdownwitthekidz
there's a bus right to one from bassanos. Dinner depends on when the tennis finishes!
it's maxicnao!
*mexican
strange typo. Must proof read before i post...
thought so. i bet lewis and swizzle eat in nandos :)
Massive thunder roar. Lasted about 15 seconds. I think it may rain
I've heard UK nandos is better than Australian nandos so I must eat it. For science.
im stiill getting over aussie kfc doing mash and gravy
Portuguese
That's not right. Is it at least chicken gravy?
Jessica Ennis lining up for her last javelin throw
It's a good one
47.49
New lifetime best
yeah and we get this little roll that goes with it, its alright
so goooood.
I haven't been to UK kfc yet and even after 3 trips to olympic park I haven't been to the worlds largest McDonalds. My fast food loving side has been strangely absent!
Crazy man is making 4th place medals at his own expense and sending them to people who finish 4th
https://twitter.com/HuffingtonPost/status/231737273270562816
I think my tickets tomorrow are only a few rows from the players box. Judy! Mirka!
Apparently so do the US, I saw lots of motor racing people getting annoyed during a NASCAR race because it was filled with the same commercial for it over and over.
Heptathlon after 6 events
Jessica Ennis 5971 points
Skujyte - Lithuania 5783
Yosypenko - Ukraine 5701
Nana Djimou Ida - France 5696
Schwarzkopf - Germany 5692
Chernova - Russia 5657
maria v s williams starting now.
BBC3, a CGI live map for the sailing because it is so hard to follow in vision
is that chelsea handler in marias box? did i just see that?
As near as I can figure it out the secondplace heptathlete has to do the 800 metres about 34 seconds faster than Ennis to beat her. Considering the race only takes about 2 minutes that is not very likely.
Maria invited her to her first round match and after she won it she's made her come to all of then. A bit superstitious is our Masha
thought that was her, she is pretty funny though, thats not a bad show (chelsea lately)
williams should be too strong today
24 seconds not 34.
azarenka won the bronze medal
so a bronze for Belarus then :)
amazing! i am jealous. get a pic of Judy and Kim for me :)
https://twitter.com/vorvice/status/231741686982795264
BREAKING: Handed start sheets for 100m semis tomorrow. Adam Gemili in with Blake and Gay. Chambers in lane next to Bolt #london2012
I guess you don't ever get an easy draw in the 100m semis
Ooooh that should be interesting
Did anyone see this with the polish shotputter?
http://deadspin.com/5931753/polish-shotput-gold-medalists-celebration-nearly-interrupts-womens-10k-final-ends-in-evil-laugh
He ran through the 10k final!
He should get a 30 second penalty for that
sharipova getting trounced at the moment.
kinda one sinded so far!
goo Serena!
Will Maria get a game?
awww, go maria!
Just watched some trampolining. Don't know how more people don't do themselves serious injury doing that.
Bouncy castles would be safer
that would be awesome!
exhibition sport, rio 2016??
Bouncy castles in Rio. Does life get any better?
Sharapova - the comeback starts here
:)
look out, the russian is on the board
Serena's ability today is stunning!
match point
gold medal point!
gold medal point :) love it.
made that look easy.
she does it!!! amazing, just over an hour! crazy!
Incredible performance from Serena!
Incredibly one sided match
Dancing!
hehehe dancing!
hehe!
unbelievable record she has now.
Mens Double gold medal match next up on Centre, goooo Tsonga!
The other french doubles team (had completely missed that there were two) currently beating the Spanish lovies on court 1 for the bronze medal.
but before that they're doing the medal ceremony. seems odd not to have the doubles match out of the way before they do this so they can award all medals received today at once...
aww bless Serena, still jumping on the podium!
wait, did the flag fall off in the wind? or just wrap itself round the pole? Why were people laughing?
not sure they never showed it, just heard the crowd.....
commentators, suggesting it fell near court 1 so sounds like it really did get caught in the wind.
France get the bronze for the mens doubles! poor pretty spaniards. :(
Muzza back on court with Laura!
facing Kas and Lisicki.
it really flew!
hehe! :D
i find it strange Kim hasn't turned up to Andy's matches today, mixed doubles isn't that important then :)
:O Murray and Robson break the germans already!
team GB win the first set in just 20 mins 6-1. amazing.
GB cycling women with a World Record win over Canada gets them a place in the final of the team pursuit vs USA.
how are they doing this, Laura and Murray break in the second set! stunning performance so far!
well they have more experience playing together, that must help!
oh the Germans have broken back. dammit.
yeah i think that's helping. Although Virginia Wade things Laura got a bit spooked in that last game. Crowd is super loud!
they've broken back 3-2 now. amazing :)
also helps kas's highest ranking was 224 and that was a decade ago
ahh really? Commentators are saying he's a doubles specialist, and it's shocking he isn't doing so well now. but that would make sense!
he's a doubles specialist but still has never been spectacular at it
ohhhhh! well they broke back, again :( silly germans, go team GB!
Chop chop boys I want to go to nandos haha
i'm choosing to ignore Tsonga in the hope he'll play better .. but looking at the first set, i'm guessing that didn't work!
OH MY GOODNESS!!! Andy and Laura into the FINAL!
2 medals for Murray tomorrow then!!! :D and 2 gold medal matches! gonna be an amazing day of tennis!! :D
Ah and Tsonga and Llodra get the silver, Bryan Bros win the Gold!
ah Judy is the cutest -
@judmoo I can honestly say I have NEVER been more excited in my life. Unbelievable kids!!!!!! @laurarobson5 and @andy_murray U R AMAZING!!!
:) aww
Women's team pursuit finals about to start. 5th v 6th now. NZ v NED
NZ win
right, screen break for me! so much sport is bad for my eyes. back later!
Canada v Australia for the bronze medal
Canada take it
GB v USA for the gold/silver race
Gold for GB! New World Record! Beat the mark they set in the previous round.
More gold awesomeness :)
Andy and Laura seem happy on bbc1 :)
Elimination race of the omnium. Slowest rider is eliminated until there's a winner!
This is fun :)
This is great!
yeah this is good, i like it
the eliminations are so close!!
Clancy the GB guy is hanging on by a thread!
Heh the UK dude did a wheelie to stay in
yeah 1 was a dead heat, they didnt eliminate any one
He's out now, you can tell he's knackered
Chicken time!!*
*if my train ever arrives
That was a great race. Part of a series of 6 different types of races too so these guys have been busy.
Evening. Yay for Denmark, even though the BBC made out that the GB team should have won (Mrs. Goat got very annoyed at the commentary).
The cycling was AWESOME.
Dai Green hasn't had a good race.i don't know if he will qualify.
I am hoping the BBC havent jinxed Jessica Ennis after all the hype so far.
I hope not but she has done really, really well
I really want her to win!
He's too slow I think.
Nah she'll be fine, huge points lead, doesn't need to win the race. I'm interested to see if Johnson-Thompson can make the top 20.
Me too. Mrs. Goat quite likes her.
Ouch, that guy hit the hurdle, that looks like it hurts
In a coverage update, I have been told that in NZ they are showing delayed highlights but keep spoiling the winners beforehand.
I think everyone does :)
Ouch that guy who hit the hurdle.
Sounds like what they're doing in the US
Poor lad. He's gutted :(
Except they can get away with that in NZ!
Turns out he's fast enough!
In other news, have you seen Clare Baldings tweets today? Very apologetic.
Good stuff!
This guy on bbc1 looks like neil patrick harris
More scheduling conflicts.
Athletics continuing. Swimming about to start (red button). GB v Korea football about to start although with the amount of the game we see anyway I'm happy to miss it. GB v Australia basketball in a bit.
Kromo...whats her name won the 50m.
:) 'The Dutch one'
BBC1 opting for a balancing act, swimming, cut to athletics, cut to swimming.. may not all be entirely live but it's not far off so I'll take it
There were two in that race - the other got bronze!
Watching Jeter run is funny- its like she can't stop after she's finished!
another false start in the swimmimng, again the false starter is not disqualified. seems as though they have thrown the rule book away. anyway it looks like the chinese swimmer sun might smash the world record inthe 1500, he is miles ahead of the record at about half way.
That's a hell of a lead!
He's a body length clear of the yellow line
Beats the record by 3 seconds.
beat the wr by over 3 seconds
christine ohuruogo was so close!
Ohuruogu makes the final of the 400, the one in lane 3 looked to have a lot left in the tank though.
hey y'all, back at hotel. what have we missed?
What are the false start rules in swimming?
Good for her!
if you false start you are disqualified. same as the running
Denmark in the swimming final. Jeanette Ottesen Gray :)
Don't you get an extra chance?
no its one false start and you are out.
Massive jump from greg rutherford/neil patrick harris
I think I heard them say earlier that this was the first Olympics where that is the rule.
So we have found a bar with a TV but it's on quite low so any interesting sound bytes, we're relying on you :)
no its been around for a while, ian thorpe was disqualified years ago from an event where he false started, it stops the two and three restarts the used to happen with people knowing they could have a free hit at jumping the gun, its not a bad rule but it can be very harsh, as usain bolt found out in the world championships a couple of years ago.
another world record in the pool, with the u.s. breaking the 4x100 world record
must have been a specific event he was talking about then.
Are you two on holiday?
I've got TV on BBC1 and the ipad on swimming feed. Fran Halsell got Sharron Davies in tears in the post-race interview. I missed what she said though.
I have the TV on mute whilst i watch a 30 minute video of muse talking about their new album so the two may be out of sync from me im afraid :0
*:)
I saw hugs.
looking at the long jump its amazing to think bob beamon jumped 8.90m in 1968, the current blokes are 70-100 cm short of that jump from 44 years ago
Just a night out. Poorly timed Olympics-wise :)
Apparently the long jump judge put up the wrong flag - to the great amusement of the crowd!
Have fun - we'll keep you posted ;)
imagine the chaos that could cause in f1 :)
The way that Chinese guy celebrated winning the swimming was awesome though.
Wow
hulk (water) smash
BBC may have multiple streams but the BBC 1 coverage is making Sure you don't miss anything!
its still the olympic record and has only been beaten once, in 1991
love that the crowd are sitting amongst the LED panels. hope they get some more use in the closing ceremony. wonder if they'll just leave them there?
I'm always amazed at the timing of the long jumps to be on the right side of the board (mostly).
if only the same could be said of my jumps on the london 2012 game :)
air piano...
They should attempt to jump into the same like they were jumping from a stage to crowd surf, see if that makes it any further
final swim about to start, phelps final swim before he retires too
cant believe this is the final swim for the olympics. it's gone too quickly.. i will miss all the nice... swimming... :)
Evening all
I've loved it all week, brilliant sport.
Ditto that.
Another gold for Phelps
Mmmm, i'm sure you will.. ;)
It;s been really good, always enjoy watching swimming at the olympics. One final gold for Phelps too
18 golds for phelps.
Brilliant performance, going out on a high.
every race i've seen i've been totally hooked with the swimming. i think week 1 is much more my type of olympics. i'm not really into athletics and field events as much as i am the other events like swimming, tennis, rowing etc.
Cue a load of 18 carat gold headlines
you got to that headline fast! you should work in the papers! :)
ahh i remember young innocent lou... ;)
what do you mean remember.. i'm still the same ;)
Oooh, good one!
you'll have to remind me of that :)
Jess going in her 800m soon :D
I am sure the papers have had that one ready for days.
i can't cope with the idea that we've had a week of the olympics already. IT CAN'T END!
predictions then?
G.O.L.D!
She likes it, and is many points in the lead ...
she must win or clare balding will go nuts again
hehe. i meant finishing position in the race. anyone think she won't get gold?
Days and days to go yet. Just don't think about it.
hhahaha. apology central.
Phelps is a legend. I saw someone stupid enough to claim he wasn't that great because "he enters, like, 92 events In every Olympics".
She might not win the race but she doesn't need to. Gold for the event, but i do think she'll win the race anyway.
mum says she hopes it ends soon, because we've both spent the last 2 days just watching the olympics!! :)
but yes. not thinking about it. I will be sad when the tennis finishes tho. I like watching Murray every day :)
On the ceiling. Choon.
And therefore was bound to win. Stupid logic eh?
She has 13.5s worth of lead in this one.
where would jess have to finish to not get gold. how far back and beaten by who (sorry not commentator audio here)?
thanx
she would have to break down, she cant lose from here
She really apologised lots on twitter today.
I do hope Ennis wins - I am afraid with a lot of these athletes that the BBC put them on such a high pedestal that it s a big disappointment if they don't.
How's that meant to work? :)
Happened a few times already.
I don't know. This person runs a funny website but her Facebook posts are quite idiotic.
Really hoping Katarina does well too, bright future for Rio.
go on KJT!
Nicely done :)
fab pace!
Loving Johnson-Thomson. A new favourite!
Cram says KJT took 3 or 4 seconds off her PB
She seemed to just surf on the crowd there
home crowd awesomeness
KJT GB youth record
I heard Tomlinson interviewed earlier. His voice just doesn't match his size and look at all
She never stops smiling!! Remember the name.
Commentator "You just missed the biggest cheer of the day"
Yeah thanks Beeb.
They missed it. Not us
*holds breath*
Jess looked like she'd cry bwfore the syart
oh my gosh!!
Katarina did well!
Go Jess!!
LIT is limpy and last = GOLD
AMAZING!!
Crowd is so loud! GOLD!
oh my gosh!!!! what a final sprint!!!
That's the way to do it
Now that is how you become an olymoic champion at home :)
awwwwww :')
YAY
amazing
Proper Olympic moment that
An amazing woman. She was just playing with them.
Sports personality of the year.
epic long jump too from
barney from HIMYMgreg rutherford!more gold please.
She had to miss Beijing with injury. She's had to wait for this one.
think we're gonna need Sport Personalities this year for all these peopl
In Beijing she had to switch take off legs in the long jump. How can anyone do that?
and the Sports Personality of the year for Athletics is...... And the Sport Personality of the year for Rowing is.... etc etc :)
Team of the year is decided for sure
it's the only way to incorporate all these incredible performances!
Agree.
Yey for Jess! Go Longjumpers! Go Mo!
Still amazed by that. We’ve seen some action as well… Jessica Ennis… goodnight.
i feel like i need a massive union jack to tie round my shoulders right now. <3 team GB :)
Did I just see someone in the crowd taking photos with an iPad?
this trend is popping up more and more. i disapprove as it looks silly.
Ennis The Menace
Anyone For Ennis?
Never mind Wimbledon, I'm watching t'Ennis
(just a couple I saw on Twitter)
Confirmed.
I am sure Brendan Foster enjoyed that race. That is how he used to run. Disappear off in front and if someone had the temerity to pass him they got the same treatment we just saw.
I agree with Denise Lewis - one for men and one for women
i will never forgive Apple for putting a camera on the ipad. stupid people.
hehe Judy is loving the olympics - @judmoo
Ennis The Menace!!!!! Toooooo good!!!!!!!
:)
I thank them every week because I can talk to my family on it.
Shame Andy Murray's final wasn't today or the headline could have been
Gold for Ennis and tennis
Yes.
But that's a functional use of it, a sensible good use.
Surely if you wanna take photos in public, use something little and less silly!
ahh front facing camera is ace. rear facing camera is annoying.. why would you take photos with it!! whyyyy!!
Of all the athletes you wanted to win... Jessica Ennis had to be at the top of the list. Really enjoying this!
Saw someone taking videos of their kid with one the other day.
Nice to see all the heptathletes celebrating together
true and exceptional athletes are those that you support at the olympics regardless of their country. Jess is one of those. amazing.
The man with the flag in the long jump is athletic's Charlie Whiting.
Proper sportsmanship. That's what the Olympics should be about.
go Mo!
Mo farah!
If he does win, I think the shock will put his wife into labour!
BBC, stop tempting fate!
oohhh dear Tomlinson stopped for his long jump while they start the race. he looks happy.
Let's hope no shotputters run across this 10k final
Can Mo win it? Think it would be pretty mega if he beat all those Africans...
zebedee :)
These runners all have fantastic names!
just hearing that they have to run 25 laps is exhausting!
no refuelling for this 25 lap race, sorry mr c
They can run the 10km faster than most people can run a 5km!
I remember watching the 10k as a kid and it seemed to go on for days
aww, poor chris.
jumper guy looks like chris martin / button
i was thinking james morrison myself
we have nicknamed him barbie man in this house..
I feel like I have heard of Mo but am too stupid to know why.
2.3s shoe change
:D
whhhaaaaaattt!
he is homer's friend and owns a bar
or... uhh... not
I think I said it during the womens, it takes me an hour longer :)
Simply the Jess.
Mo-ing for GOLD. #tomorrowsheadlines
:) much better :)
From @BBCSport
Tatyana Chernova (Rus) took heptathlon silver, Lyudmyla Yosypenko (Ukr) bronze. GB's Katarina Johnson-Thompson 14th & Louise Hazel 26th
It is an incredible pace. it's basically a sprint!
'THINGS HAPPEN AT STADIUM'
'LADY DOES GOOD'
'YES.'
I'm not so good at this headling thing
I think you mean
LADY DOES GOLD
woohooooo, the neil patrick harris lookalike gets a long jump gold :D
woooooo!! gold for Greg in the long jump!
Wow, I had no idea we had a good long jumper
How can he be Olympic champion and I have never ever heard his name before?
can we have the olympics here every time please?
we're not giving them back, hold the torch hostage.
YES! :)
Huge build up to that jump by the crowd
♥
All summer please.
Since when did the UK become awesome at long jump???
we have no idea! :)
jumping over all the puddles we get now
Last good one was Lynn Davies in 1964.
Who was my art teacher's husband!
#claimtofame
i wonder if its strange or off putting for them to be running when all the announcements and music is still playing.
His shoe came off, oh dear
no way!!
Someone has stepped on the back of one of the Kenyan's shoes
Ohh no he just fell over
Meanwhile at the Millennium Stadium north of the border...
GBR 1-1 KOR
Extra Time coming up
There's a white Brit in the 10k. He's the equivalent of a HRT.
left of the border
It's sidepodcast. Co-incidences like that are only to be expected. You mention someone who was famous 50 years ago and it is a safe bet someone knows him
People in the media were complaining, I've not seen anything from athletes but it must be.
it's true! he came into one of our lessons in year 7 once, but that's the only time. he's very nice though just like his awesome wife.
Nice
Not often you have a team with their full players names on the jerseys.
Actually it is north for me so you're right
re: Korea's kits.
He hasn't even had a mention in the build up. I had no idea he was there
i'm guessing you get into a rhythm and you can tune it out.. but i wonder if the beat in some music might put you off a bit. Murray and a few other tennis players have said it's strange to come out to music, or hear it playing over the courts before hand, but that doesn't distract them really.
cool!!
Supposedly it affects how you run but I can't say I've ever noticed it.
i guess he's the number 2 driver
I'm surprised the Japanese Men have reached the Medal round with their win at the Theater of Dreams earlier today. But I'm guessing that stadium title might get a "Sez you..." from the Nadhesiko. :3
i always find it easier to run to faster music when at the gym, same with swimming, but i suppose they are professionals and if it effected them badly, they wouldn't play music.
that's just because of altitude though
I ran from my car to the hairdresser place this morning to escape the rain and that tired me, these people are not human
Bet you Pounds ito Pasties all the big screen TV's at the Olympic Park are tuned in to the GBR - KOR match right now.
Pounds to Pasties = Dollars to Donuts
The commentator at the time said Beamon almost jumped out of the pit. Watch the video it was an absolutely ridiculous jump.
Lynn Davies said to him 'You have destroyed this event.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Beamon
Altitude was a factor but Beamon was awesome that year and especially that day
This is a fascinating race.
Was the 20km race walk held in the Olympic stadium or outside near the place?
Wow, today is apparently the first time we've won 5 gold medals in one day in 100 years
Normally that would start and finish in the stadium like the marathon but most of it would be on the streets
Normally through the streets to finish in the stadium but I've not seen anything about it.
ohhh! impressive!!
Are we supposed to make a sacrifice to the gods or something?
I vote we sacrifice Boris
I remember the 2008 race walks were done back and forth on a avenue outside the Olympic facilities in Beijing.
nooo he's too amusing.
Nice. :D
2:39 per km! I can't cycle that fast!
Mo is starting to come forward..
Surely Mo having half a pound of gold round his neck is a bad thing
For those watching the Men's 20 km Race Walk, how many of London's Finest are volunteering as officials for the race? Gotta make sure they're walking and not jogging/running, you know...
Handball in the Box on KOR on their attack. And it's HT of XT
i am in love with the dancing wenlock in the background there!
Simon Cowell is going to have to come up with something really good to get better ratings than the BBC if they keep this up on a Saturday night
Saturday Night Sport? Yes, Please. :D
The Olympics is good at making us forget the garbage ITV produces
Aww races where they lap people... Bless them!
Could they have come up with more pretentious names than Wenlock and Mandeville. One sounds like a poison and the other the national spinal injuries hospital
Bolt could lap me in the 400m.
I hope they don't try to unlap themselves as Christian Horner will go nuts.
I gather they have the blue w/yellow strip flag handy...
Should've gone for Wormwood Scrubs and Pentonville.
goo Mo! goooo!!
GO MO!!
YEEESSSSSSS
Wow. What a run. I have never heard such cheering for a 10k.
A WHITE MAN CAME SECOND!
WOHOOOOOOOOO!!! What a day!!!! What.a.day!!!
Listen to that crowd!!
Well done Mo.
I was sure half a lap out he was going to get third at best
Another yay!!!
It's not quite over yet!
What a roar :)
I was convinced the Kenyans and Ethiopians would get him
Mo running, No problem. #tomorrowsheadlines
best night of sport ever
+1
Farah has absolutely no idea what to do.
What a night of british sport!
YEEEEES!!! WOW!!!!!!
Mo Farah ran an awesome. Race!
They are soooo skinny
Meanwhile North of the Border
GBR 1-1 KOR 109'
mum keeps saying 'they wouldn't be that skinny if they lived under my roof! that's too skinny!
Awww!
So happy for the British in this olympics!
if we're gonna host this thing we're gonna do it right! :)
So pleased we've hosted the olympics so well.. and the home advantage is going this well. just amazing. goooooo team GB!
(i may have to buy a flag tomorrow)
The Motto for this Games is "Inspire a Generation". Looks like you're doing a good job. ;)
Can this get Mo Better
you are on a roll tonight Steven!
happy people make me :')
When it works
You gotta roll with it
I really want him to say this day has been legen-wait for it-DARY
hehehehehehe!! Mo has a mascot!! :)
Love this tweet
This is the greatest night for Britain since Piers Morgan left the country. #teamGB
The long jump guy is pretty happy :)
I only found out today that there is a cycling multi-event event called the omnium. The race I saw was 18 riders on track in the velodrome and every second lap the last rider drops out. Quite an amazing event
We were watching it earlier on in the comments, it was quite brilliant!
So much for all the build up about how great Carmelita Jeter is
That was fun to watch
118th minute...
GBR w/a Free Kicvk
Kick*
Just wide...
Looks like the football will go to penalties. In injury time at the end of extra time
Yello card on the KOR goalie for Delay of Game
wenlock has grown on me. I kind of want one.
I saw that live at the world champs in April, was great atmosphere!
Full TIme in Extra TIme...
Penalties it is. Football is on BBC3.
I wonder if Stuart Pearce will revert to psycho
To Penalty Kicks we go... ><:
Teary Jessica.
It looks like it would be great to see live
Does this get Ennis better?!
Steven, you missed "the joy of six" as a headline!
Sounds like a Cricket book title
:)
Are there any other possible golds so we can get
7th heaven
Magnificent 7
etc
Taken by the 1996 US Women's Gymnastic Team. ;)
OK then, here we go with the Penalty kicks...
I am so happy right now!
Ramsey up first for GBR
SCORES
KOR counters with Koo Ja Shou(sp?)
SCORES
Tied at 1
Next for GBR Tom Cleverly
He Clevery puts it away. ;)
Beck Sum Dong(sp?) scores
2 all
can't cope with any more tension!
I find myself browsing the store, trying to chose a wenlock. Damn Olympics.
GBR scores again
pearce overseeing a shootout. heheh
Don't say over
KOR scores again. 3-3
:)
This ain't Cricket
gigggggggsy
Giggs is up now.
innnnn
Giggs puts GBR up
almost as good as a worldcup kiddo
Park Jungwoo up for KOR...
Good penalties all round
Ties it at 4
OH!!!!!
oh no saved
Stutter step. Really?
HEARTBREAK
keeper has a blue tounge
Both footie teams out..
Surely it's about time we admitted that football is not our thing!!
we can run... but we can't... win at penalties
If you do a stutter step you have to score. That's the rule.
Besides stutter steps were banned
"Some things never change"
this is not the england football team. grr.
Sturridge Pen was a lot of :S
I like policeman wenlock http://shop.london2012.com/London-2012-Olympics-die-cast-keyring---Wenlock-Policeman/Mascot/Collectables/20003711,default,pd.html
:)
It's fine with me. The Olympics triumphs are much sweeter anyway.
Jess cried, mum and i cried, and then my internet died. no one can cope with this! :)
i hear coldplay in the background!
heheheheh!
Really though, who cares about the football after the other events today?
That flam looks way too low to me. It should be a lot higher up
I imagine there are some.
no one. i really hope that after these olympics people in Britain come to remember that we are actually really skilled in sports other football... and that they need more coverage in order to inspire many more generations to come. We are relatively rubbish at football in comparison to other sports! goo GB :)
Hehehe. His name is Minichello.
Mini rubens.
#obsessed
Unlike the man in the pic Rubens just tweeted.
Meanwhile in Men's Water Polo earlier tonights, the US got Serb-ed. :D
That is quite the gentleman.
He clearly enjoys his work. Of cooking lots of meat.
really like the stadium.. we took abu dhabi's hotel and we made it 100x better :D
LOL :D
She is tiny compared to the other medalists
mum 'the real question is, will she be taller than the Russian lady when on the top step?'
bless my mum
hehe
it has lights on the inside that flash different colours too!! :o
your mum really needs to commentate on stuff. :)
preferably with chad le clos' dad.
hehehe!
The only football I've watched was those pens (its not a true olympic sport) ;)
super super proud of jess. of all of these amazing people.
I got the RUS-USA Bronze Medal Match in Women's Team Epee on here.
I saw some epee earlier. Coloured LEDs light up in their masks when the score. Genius but spooky
The arrangement is too fast for stadium singing
First Wiggo, then Hoy, now Jess for Sport's Personality
They have synced well
They managed it :)
can't believe you can hear it so clearly!! <3 this stadium!!! :')
The more they play chariots of fire, the more I think of rowan atkinson
Denise is in tears!! awww
tears for everyone!!
There are lights around the pistes as well.
They are like aeroplane escape lights
True
I still haven't seen the little mini's on TV yet, really want one of those.
Minis?
So the Kiwis get the medals per capita, Gary just dropped the stat, we win on medals per population :)
In the field events, they use mini's to collect stuff and mark stuff. Seen so many photos of them, they look so much fun!
We always do well on per capita.
Haven't seen that
Christine and Mr. C, I hope you get to check out a Handball match if you haven't done so already. :)
Here's an example
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/olympics/article-2183053/London-2012-Olympics-Mini-Mini-deliver-athletics-equipment.html
(apologies for the source but they have nice photos)
The drivers must be good to catch the javelins
More like a Micro if you ask me. ;)
I imagine this idea was out of safety concerns?
mini minis!!!
Just flicked to a hockey game to hear the commentator say that they are waiting for the Argentines to put the defending corners kit on. They are putting on masks to defend corners but not for the rest of the match?
Now it all makes sense why the Konami Code was created
http://www.vg247.com/2012/08/04/konamis-kohei-uchimura-takes-gymnastics-gold-at-2012-london-olympic-games/
aren't they awesome! I want oooonnne.
(or maybe four or five)
I think I declare that as too much excitement for one day!
Being a goalkeeper in handball seems like a job for someone who doesn't mind that they are unlikely ever to save a shot.
Speaking of whom...
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/interest/2012-08-02/gold-medalist-uchimura/manga-inspired-me-in-gymnastics
I saw a bit of one, it was a lot of throwing and catching.
haven't yet.will try.
I imagine geting a ticket for the final week of competition in that event is a tough buy?
Jessica Ennis has gained 80,000 followers in the last half an hour. If she monitors her follower count she could be in for a shock when she has time to check in
I hope she has new follower emails turned off
She already had well over 300k followers so that would be a lot of e-mails
I'm trying not to get carried away with the medal table and focus on the stories, but 16 years ago at Atlanta 1996 we only had one gold medal and today we have 14. I really hope the BOA keep the funding up for the next several Games.
Agreed. This should be the real legacy of the London games!
how much is home advantage though. i mean can we deal with heat of rio, funding or no funding? there's no timezone issues or jetlag to deal with here either. it's gotta help.
hope the venues all continue to be used for their intended purpose though.
i want this to be the picture of the games - https://twitter.com/iamwenlock/status/231869499832426496/photo/1
Oops, forgot to post in here today, and I've been watching the Olympics for the last six hours too!
I think I know who may be inside wenlock
heheheheh
I went to see the 8k / 22.2 preview today too… it was quite good, but never going to work in your front room.
The detail in the pictures is great though :-)
Could be tricky out there and they won't have crowd support which has definitely lifted some of them. The funding and training though, the taps are going to be turned off in some of the sports.
Some are temporary but yeah it would be great to keep them rather than turn them into conference centres or football grounds (we have enough football grounds)
oooh, could you tell the difference between 5.1 and 22.1?
Yes, but it's not a seismic difference, in the preview of the opening ceremony, swimming and basketball that I saw anyway
I guess there was extra funding because we're hosting?
I think tonight has shown that there are so many other sports than football tha deserve our attention.
will you be blogging about it, love to hear more.
The emphasis on 22.2 is on the 3D sound, and you can pick out more detail, and you get a much better sense of atmosphere. But hard to be objective when you're watching a replay of Rebecca Adlington taking bronze...
Bibendum's summer job?
Hopefully, but I plan to blog a lot of things, and if you look on my website, not much goes up :-(
Yeah. Rules say as hosts we have to enter every event and in some of them we're dire. :) But some of the others are really promising, they shouldn't get cut again just because we're not hosts any more. Like basketball, okay we haven't won a game but we're not being humilated either, it's usually a close game - 4 years from now we could be something.
GP3 opening music!
awwwww! you need christine to encourage ya :)
i'm still hyper...
does anything happening here affect winter olympics funding, any crossover at all?
best day ever. just... eek.
Probably not, we're not great at those and we're never going to host them
also, if you need your faith restored in Badminton after the scandal, watch the Mens Singles final tomorrow! should be a cracker! the doubles will be good also!
scandal?
after the 8 players got disqualified for trying to lose.... #beenunderarock
ahhh, i saw the discussion. didn't know it counted as a scandal. ...at least not by f1 standards ;)
haha.. yeh, in the badminton world it was scandal... but not in F1 terms...
awwwwwwww..... :(
plan to be glued to the telly all day tomorrow, should catch it. you can't buy this kinda entainment.
Same here before and after my shift at the supermarket where I work at, ;)
next olympics i'm taking the month off :)
"we just won the olymics" is the sweetest thing ever.
Any plans on going to Rio to watch in person?
nah, it's just up the road and i didn't go.
Would be a great place for a meet up. Especially if Interlagos was around the same time
For those inspired to compete but who can't be bothered to get off the couch I recommend
http://www.miniclip.com/games/london-2012-olympic-games/en/
Long jump is impossible though
I mean in 2016
Best thing about Rio could be the time difference. Everything will start 3hrs later. Of course it won't finish until 1 or 2 am every night.
Sorry if I confused anyone. But I was wondering if you were going to go foto Rio in 2016 to watch some of the Olympics events in person.
7th to 23rd February 2014 for the Winter Olympics
i bet amy will. i try not leave the house.
Or there.
Sochi is the PM to AM where I am,
I always like Olympics on American time because you don't miss all the stuff you do at work when it is here
I've never seen someone so sad at getting a silver medal???
was there that much pressue on them? any medal will do, if you ask me.
Rio is an hour ahead of me so it'll be pretty much like Atlanta 1996 or Montreal 1976 but with me in the US Central Time Zone in a sense.
Off topic.
American physicist Neil deGrasse Tyson is having a conversation with the Mars Curiosity rover on twitter
Some of the boats are almost expected to get gold, certainly the men's 4. Don't know about that crew though.
I think there is a saying out there along the lines of "You don't win Silver, you lose Gold."
Well it was great that Denmark got a gold medal. They have come so close in a lot of events!
no-one at the stadium wants to leave.
Methinks this'll be the same thought come next Sunday night.
was that the first? very cool. glad switzerland got one too.
which backmarker can i support tomorrow?
My mate just told me that 10years ago he was selling running shies with Mo Farah!
Yes it was. They missed out on a couple of rowing events and they were close in swimming too. Their badminton and handball teams aren't so good this time so they may miss out too. So it was really great to see them win like that today.
Hope everyone saw drunk Redgrave.
hadn't realised. well done denmark.
Winter Olympics will be awesome, skeleton especially :-) I'm hoping to try the skeleton track near Riga later this month :-)
I am game for most things but I don't think I would try that
Lynn Davies on BBC1
cripes, missed the gold in the velodrome too.
we should let someone else have a go now.
