Yesterday was a relatively quiet news day, compared to those we have seen over the past few days. Things are slowing down momentarily, just before everything ramps up again for Brazil. Meanwhile, here's what we're talking about:

  • Trulli is going to test out a NASCAR drive, which he says is just for fun. Of course, this leads to epic speculation that he is on his way out, with Mr C announcing that if the Italian does make the jump, he might actually start watching the sport. Weird.
  • We learnt yesterday that Massa would be waving the chequered flag at Brazil, his home race. That's going to be kinda tough for him, knowing how difficult the race was last year, and being frustrated that he can't be in the car this time round. However, he says it's an honour, and I'm sure he'll do a fab job.
  • Alguersuari is preparing for the final Renault 3.5 series race towards the end of this month, but he is adament (again) that it isn't interfering in his Formula 1 participation. Why do people keep asking him about this? The man himself admits that the cars are different, but surely all racing is good racing, as you will always be learning?

That'll do it for now. The phrase thank god it's Friday has never been so apt as this week, however, things are looking much more positive now. Let us know what your plans are for the weekend, and if they are as exciting as ours (moving furniture). I will see you in the comments.

I had that, hope you dont go down with a viral bug like i did :(

You have to get better before you go home though!

  • Amy09/10/2009 at 01:42

exactly! Break is in 20 minutes and priceline is next door so i might go see what they have in the way of eye drops.

Probably lack of sleep. You could try getting some saline solution to wash them out with or if you are confident enough make your own. 0.5g of salt in a litre of water and stir it up. Make sure it is all dissolved then wash your eyes with it.

    Should be 5 grams not 0.5. It's 0.5%

I think the problem is i got a new cleanser and did a great job of getting it in my eyes, blatantly ignoring the keep away from eyes instruction because i was out of eye make up remover. Might buy some of that too while im there :)

you'll have to listen. there's a clear line between well thought out comments from the wiki, and stuff i'm making up on the fly. the defining difference i think is my questions don't end with an actual question.

    must work on that.

Ah, but that's one of the great things about SPC - it gives us a chance to be part of it all. I haven't been disappointed yet!

the hours joe's put in this year are impressive. i didn't think we could do one for every race, but that's almost been the case.

Its been really great, I get the impression from the podcasts that he enjoys doing them though and that really comes across with all the positive feedback.

I dont know hom many new subscribers he will pick up this time of year, but I am sure a big push before the start of the new season would be great!

any hints? I'm guessing you guys moved by car though? But you've got more stuff than me, certainly more valuable things like podcasting equipment. my dodgy old laptop (where 7 and 8 stopped working this week, just like a Krusty calculator) will go back to work and then it's just music really and books that I have to ship.

Hints about? We're moving from one side of Rockall to the other.

The podcasting equipment is set up, and we have what we need to survive. Now we have to go back and sort out the other stuff and most dreaded of all, cleaning.

Exactly. I've only got about 5 boxes I think - need to go find some good tape to seal them shut and I've learnt to combine heavy things with light things in the same box and use clothes as padding. I think I'll cope but the italian postal system has a reputation of not delivering.

  • Christine09/10/2009 at 08:52

The thing about the iPod Touch is that you then have access to a whole lot more stuff, rather than buying one game which is... one game. I don't wanna sway ya, just saying.

my current ipod is starting to get to its 8gb limit too so thats the major reason for me why im considering it. Plus apps, games and whatnot but then my mind slaps me for spending that much on one item randomly..

  • Scott in Italy09/10/2009 at 08:55

I think it's now only you who doesn't have one ;)

italy was the most expensive country to get one, and I knew i wasn't going to stay here for two years. well not after the iphone came out anyway. i did stay here for two years - just no iphone :(

  • Scott in Italy09/10/2009 at 08:55

I believe it's a good investment, but it is a lot of money.

  • F1Wolf09/10/2009 at 08:57

I'm planning on getting an iphone once set up in the USA - anyone got a good reason why not to?

    1) I believe there still is no video cam feature (or I haven't really looked for it hard enough)

    2) The battery could last a bit longer

    3) If you do travel a lot and you like to save some $$$ by getting a local SIM card instead of roaming then iPhone may not be the right gadget

otherwise, not much wrong I must say

  • F1Wolf09/10/2009 at 08:58

well, and I did not have to buy the iPhone, the carrier called me asking if I want one for free, surprisingly with no strings attached. so perfect :-)

    this sounds like my cue:

the trick to spending lots of money on something is to make the decision instantly, click buy NOW, ignore the voices in your head telling you its silly because I have never, NEVER regretted any of my purchases like that and I've made a lot in my time. I hope Kindle continues this trend :D

exactly ... compare it with the Hong Kong guy who got the prize for physics this year, 30 years after the discovery of those digital imaging things. now he is old, suffering from Alzheimer, not able to deliver the speech ...

yah know, he's promised to withdraw all troops by 2011. I'd have thought they'd have waited to see if he was true to his word seeing as how politicians like to say things, but obviously I am wrong!

  • Steven Roy09/10/2009 at 10:39

morning all. i'm sure steven has probably told you all about NASA crashing things into the moon in a few hours? Read. Watch it live on NasaTV in 2 hrs and 15 minutes. just when i have a meeting. grr. but it's my last meeting here. i finish on monday and then move to boston. finally ;)

    Into the moon, on purpose?

Yes. Into the moon on purpose. They are looking for water so the first bit that hits the moon will kick up a plume of dust and stuff 10km into the air and the next part flies through the dust and analyse its contents. Then the main part of the spacecraft is crashed into the moon.

It is on NASA TV now

  • Christine09/10/2009 at 10:46

I can't help but feel that if we throw stuff at the moon, the moon might throw stuff back. It can't be good karma.

  • Steven Roy09/10/2009 at 10:48

The first part of the spacecraft to hit will create a crater 2 metres deep and 30 metres in diameter. Acording to NASA TV impacts of this nature occur naturally a few times a month. None of the space rocks that are causing these showed up when I was researching the sidepodspace show.

  • Alex Andronov09/10/2009 at 10:48

I can't help but feel that if we throw stuff at the moon, the moon might throw stuff back. It can't be good karma.

Don't be surprised when we find that this rocket we're throwing at the moon actually has Bruce on board.

I like that... I think we need to make some of those triangles for the back of cars saying, "Bruce on board".

If they are only causing an impact as deep as that how do they know that what they find isn't just from the last impact?

This is a minor little hit in moon terms. It is creating a crater within a much bigger crater

  • Steven Roy09/10/2009 at 10:50

  • Steven Roy09/10/2009 at 10:52

If they are only causing an impact as deep as that how do they know that what they find isn't just from the last impact?

The top several metres of the moon is dust from all th hits it has received over the years. In the analysis of the rock samples Apollo brought back showed water but NASA assumed they had been contaminated. There appears to be water in the dust layer so they are trying to find out how much water and other useful stuff is there without bring the samples into the atmosphere

  • Amy09/10/2009 at 10:52

Boo to not being charged already *shakes fist*

I assume they charge when they ship?

I have another package waiting at the post office, I assume its my McLaren member kit for the year since I just renewed. I heart McLaren packages.

  • Steven Roy09/10/2009 at 10:54

I worry about NASA sometimes. They didn't expect there to be a lot of interest in the presence of water on the moon. Stunned

The thing is surely if something hard hits into the moon it will heat it up won't it?

    Moon fondo?

Are you sure it isn't the Swiss Space Program?

  • Steven Roy09/10/2009 at 11:14

One of the real benefits of finding water apart from helping people live on the moon is that there is only one hydrogen atom between water and hydrogen peroxide so hairdressers won't have to ship peroxide up. and they use lots of peroxide in rocket fuel so if there is a lot of water they should be able to manufacture peroxide on the moon. Since the moon's gravity is one-sixth of the Earth's it takes a lot less fuel to launch from there.

  • Stuart C09/10/2009 at 11:15

One of the things I cut from the sidepodspace show was a conversation we had in the comments where we proved the moon landings were gaked because ase the lunar modules decended they used a rocket to slow them down and would melt the cheese creating a moon fondu

  • Alison09/10/2009 at 11:17

    2) Will we have to have daylight savings?

    3) Do they have Finnish broadband Internet?

  • Stuart C09/10/2009 at 11:20

    1) Is there a time difference or is it GMT?

Is there a Greenwich on the moon to establish a Mean Time?

  • Steven Roy09/10/2009 at 11:20

It's just like Carry On At Your Convenience, isn't it? "Right! Everybody out!"

I think that level of intellect is at play

  • Alison09/10/2009 at 11:20

If we get there first the moon will run to sidepodtime

I'm sure you'll have to change your watch if you go to holiday on the other side of the moon!

  • Steven Roy09/10/2009 at 11:21

    3) Do they have Finnish broadband Internet?

They must have good communications but I am not sure to Finnish levels

  • Christine09/10/2009 at 11:21

Is there a Greenwich on the moon to establish a Mean Time?

    Ooh, good point.

  • Steven Roy09/10/2009 at 11:22

I'm sure you'll have to change your watch if you go to holiday on the other side of the moon!

Given the size of the moon if it had 2 hours you would be permanently changing your watch if you went for a drive.

  • Steven Roy09/10/2009 at 11:22

10 minutes to the first impact

  • Alison09/10/2009 at 11:23

I think that level of intellect is at play

They'd started a fire to stay warm and everything. I don't think I've ever seen a proper protest before.

My post is gonna be wacked for days. My local posties and sorting office are working normally but the regional sorting office is striking so nothing's getting sorted and sent out to my town.

  • Steven Roy09/10/2009 at 11:24

Go/no go poll on the readiness to observe the impact??? Are they serious. There is no handbrake on this thing

  • Alex Andronov09/10/2009 at 11:26

Christine it's probably best that you don't look... but here are the shoes:

    http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/photo-295

Also it would appear that somebody on the drop has won the Swiss Lottery. I knew the Swiss were in on this thing!

  • Christine09/10/2009 at 11:27

Christine it's probably best that you don't look... but here are the shoes:

  • Lukeh09/10/2009 at 11:27

Christine it's probably best that you don't look... but here are the shoes:

  • Steven Roy09/10/2009 at 11:28

    5 minutes till impact

  • Amy09/10/2009 at 11:29

One of the things I cut from the sidepodspace show was a conversation we had in the comments where we proved the moon landings were gaked because ase the lunar modules decended they used a rocket to slow them down and would melt the cheese creating a moon fondu

everything I know about the moon I learned from Wallace (and Steven Roy)

  • Lukeh09/10/2009 at 11:29

They aren't mine! They are Katherine's. I came here for help!

Oh... they're katherines and not yours?

No, mine are not same same shoes. or the same laces style. Or the same messiness or anything, a simply proposterous idea!

  • Steven Roy09/10/2009 at 11:30

everything I know about the moon I learned from Wallace (and Steven Roy)

What a warped view you must have

  • Stuart C09/10/2009 at 11:30

    They're on a roll, clearly.

  • Christine09/10/2009 at 11:30

I have NASA tv. Are we looking at a picture of the moon?

  • Christine09/10/2009 at 11:34

I have NASA tv. Are we looking at a picture of the moon?

It keeps getting closer, it's kinda freaky.

  • Steven Roy09/10/2009 at 11:34

I have NASA tv. Are we looking at a picture of the moon?

Yes. The centre of the picture is where it is going to hit. We started off with the full moon and now we are very close

  • Steven Roy09/10/2009 at 11:35

It keeps getting closer, it's kinda freaky.

It has to do that to hit

  • Lukeh09/10/2009 at 11:35

    See, they're not similar whatsoever

    http://drop.io/sidepodcast/asset/09102009233-jpg

At least yours are laced in an acceptable fashion.

  • Christine09/10/2009 at 11:37

    I guess it hit

    It's a bit dark.

  • Steven Roy09/10/2009 at 11:37

It hasn't hit yet just the usual useless NASA TV commentary

  • Amy09/10/2009 at 11:37

    I guess it hit

    I feel underwhelmed.

  • Christine09/10/2009 at 11:37

That guy left really quickly. He must be hungry or something.

  • Steven Roy09/10/2009 at 11:38

    I feel underwhelmed.

They are supposed to show the dust plume going 10 km in the air. Well not air but whatever the lunar equivalent is. May take a lille while for them to sort them out.

  • Stuart C09/10/2009 at 11:39

Erm I’m not sure I want to look at that….

    My thoughts exactly.

  • Amy09/10/2009 at 11:39

That guy left really quickly. He must be hungry or something.

He rejected a high five, then he just walked out. Clearly he was underwhelmed too.

  • Steven Roy09/10/2009 at 11:41

I have no idea whether one or both have hit. I think both.

NASA TV is rubbish. I want to take it over and make it professional

Why can't they use better cameras? That was pants!

  • Lukeh09/10/2009 at 11:42

Yay, it's charged! Time to explore...

I have never ever used an iPod Touch/phone so this is like, a whole new world for me.

  • Steven Roy09/10/2009 at 11:44

Why can't they use better cameras? That was pants!

The problem for me is the commentators and the content. The level of information they supply is pathetic. They spend loads of time explaining the science and don't bother telling you whether one or both bits hit

The one on the left has a mullet. Clearly he should not be on TV!

  • Steven Roy09/10/2009 at 11:46

If the mothership has hit the info from its instruments should already have been sent back and should be instantly availble. None of this should take days to analyse.

  • me09/10/2009 at 11:46

You miss all the important purchases.

why are we on the moon?

The problem for me is the commentators and the content. The level of information they supply is pathetic. They spend loads of time explaining the science and don't bother telling you whether one or both bits hit

They need to start with what is happening, then tell us why, then get to the science. And they need to do it all in a way I understand... which as you well know, Mr Roy, is not an easy job.

  • Christine09/10/2009 at 11:46

why are we on the moon?

Apparently there is water there, which means we don't have to go all the way to Mars.

  • Steven Roy09/10/2009 at 11:46

why are we on the moon?

NASA just crashed two bits of the LCROSS spacecraft into it to look for water

  • Steven Roy09/10/2009 at 11:48

They were advertising that they had pictures from Hubble and the 88 metre telescope in Hawaii and what do we get. Hopeless on board camera and no 10 km high plume of dust and stuff

They were advertising that they had pictures from Hubble and the 88 metre telescope in Hawaii and what do we get. Hopeless on board camera and no 10 km high plume of dust and stuff

the plume was the only reason I watched then all I ended up seeing was the moon getting closer and closer until it just went black. Boo.

  • James09/10/2009 at 11:50

Lukeh getting the ipod Touch has reminded me that I am in need of some new headphones for mine, anyone recommend any? :)

They say that anyone with a 10 inch telescope in their back yard would be able to see it so you think they would have managed to hook a TV camera on to one of the decent telescopes NASA has access to

This is why people think space is pointless - brilliant idea, successful mission and yet terrible media coverage and PR.

It's like having a Ferrari made of mud and paper and being told to drive it in the rain!

  • me09/10/2009 at 11:51

I know most of you are too cool to subscribe to the paper addition of said publication, but if you do and are experiencing all manner of problems receiving it, I suggest popping along to this thread on the Autosport forum.

if it helps, i recall christine having the same problem with the economist magazine a couple of years ago. they put a "watch" on our local post office and everything because they couldn't believe a magazine could arrive so late.

sadly they couldn't fix the delays she unsubscribed. the uk doesn't do timely postal delivery. it doesn't matter who you are, or what you subscribe too.

i would like to point haymarket in the direction of http://www.zinio.com/ tough. am hoping to buy a 12mnth subs to racecarengineering this evening and it's all delieverd electronically.

Yes - Philips in-ear buds - cost about 30 euros, very good passive noise cancelling and range, sound great and really comfy!

  • Steven Roy09/10/2009 at 11:52

This is why people think space is pointless - brilliant idea, successful mission and yet terrible media coverage and PR.

Sennheisers are a waste of money - I bought some 'cans' - they never sounded right, were way too warm and broke within 3 months :(

If a kid with a 10 inch telescope can see the plume it is going to look amazing on the Hawaii 88 metre telescope so put send TV pictures from there. They have Hubble. What more do they want. Half an hour after the hit we haven't seen a still picture yet.

  • Christine09/10/2009 at 11:57

news to me. but i'd like to try it.

Mm, it was about the time we were discussing subscribing to RCE :)

That seems the more likely option.

  • RubberGoat (Gavin Brown)09/10/2009 at 13:03

With the precision of Swiss timing comes the first of the Brazil Preview quotes from BMW. Surprised?

Not even slightly. I am choosing to ignore them until I need them :)

Then you should ignore the McLaren ones too ;)

  • Christine09/10/2009 at 13:06

    Done. :)

At the moment I have my head in the past, full of mini series.

Good point. I don't really mind how they put their magazine content online, just as long as it's done the same time as the paper version.

  • James09/10/2009 at 13:06

I don’t really mind how they put their magazine content online, just as long as it’s done the same time as the paper version.

This postal strike is, in effect, a very public suicide note. Anyone whose business model depends on the post is now urgently looking for other means of delivery. The Royal Mail just won't survive.

Doubt they’ll respond to you directly though. They care for their customers’ opinions.

Subscriptions are an essential part of a magazine publisher's business, so it is probably being taken much more seriously than you may think...

18000 miles is very close though. We may need a bigger umbrella

I dunno about anyone else but I've had a few website inform me of the fact they're looking into alternate delivery methods

Perhaps it doesn't need to be a big umbrella, but we could all be issued with umbrellas made from... steel or something.

am so confused? i thought you were revolting?

As I see it, I'm paying for a service to get specific information delivered to me on a Thursday. As this doesn't appear to be possible through the postal service, I'm left with no other option than to read it online instead.

I will be cancelling my paper subscription soon. As in this afternoon.

  • Lukeh09/10/2009 at 13:30

sadly they couldn't fix the delays she unsubscribed. the uk doesn't do timely postal delivery. it doesn't matter who you are, or what you subscribe too.

Cheaply. Amazon Plus delivery is fabulous. Often same day!

  • Steven Roy09/10/2009 at 13:37

    FA: No idea.

Anyone can set up a company selling delivery of things. But letters is a monopoly.

Private Mail failed in NZ - but then the postal service was decent. It might work in the UK but then again, you might end up like the privatisation of the trains :(

  • Steven Roy09/10/2009 at 14:20

Me neither. I had a look before paywalls were invented. They had a section which showed the number of times the lead of a race changed and I was using the info to explain to people that we used to have overtaking. Believe it or not there were races in the 60sand 70s where the lead changed hands 20 plus times with no pit stops or dodgy weather involved

  • Stuart C09/10/2009 at 14:26

Is there not allowed to be a company that does the same thing as Royal Mail but better? Is it a government thing?

That's the very stupid thing: they allowed private companies to cherry-pick the profitable side of the business (parcels, etc) but didn't compel those companies to offer services that were unprofitable (letters).

Mind you, until competition came in the Royal Mail's courier service (Parcel Force) was risible. When Mrs C worked at Amazon they were nicknamed "Parcel Farce".

Other couriers let you collect from a nearby depot

Unfortunately, yes - things have been a bit hectic lately, and I haven't stopped in in a bit (although I had been toying with the friendfeed feed for a while). It's a bit of a quiet day in the office, so I had to check in!

Well, welcome back! Just a few more Americans and we can take this place over! :D

Don't know if Mr C is around... Interesting article on WebKit:

It just fits, hopefully this time he can have some reliability too

    pah. so last week.

  • Amy09/10/2009 at 14:52

Now I am up to snuff. I would have to agree with you. I like Kimi but I have a hard time backing Ferrari. Kimi in a silver car would be something I could get behind.

Were you a fan last time he was there? It was magical.

  • Mel (USA)09/10/2009 at 14:52

perhaps you were asleep, anyone who was awake would have heard the news that KIMI IN A MCLAREN IS THE BEST THING EVER.Ahem. Only caps can express that properly.

Agreed - would rather be pulling for Kimi in a Mclaren, although I'm getting worried about him getting a ride at all given how picky he's being about his pay ...

  • Mel (USA)09/10/2009 at 14:53

    I'll do my part!

Just read this about the Brazilian GP:

Now popular hospital drama Casualty, which has traditionally aired on a Saturday since it began in 1986, will switch to Sunday on 18 October, directly against the live The X Factor results show, after the BBC cleared its early evening Saturday schedule to make way for coverage of the Brazilian grand prix.

Ahhh. I'm going to miss the apologising to Corrie viewers.

  • Alex Andronov09/10/2009 at 14:54

But making cupcakes is your personal fav.

Yes the iPhone is so far ahead you may as well make an app for it ;)

Agreed - would rather be pulling for Kimi in a Mclaren, although I'm getting worried about him getting a ride at all given how picky he's being about his pay ...

I'm afraid Kimi NOT in a ferrari might give my kids (5 and 7) a fit. They think he has the coolest name, and his car is the coolest color around! (to them, they just seem to love that red. I'm sure it has something to do with the fact I have several Lego Ferrari's)

So that means Casualty goes on after the race on Sunday? After all, the BBC would need the same timespot on both days...

Afternon everyone, i am back properly! how are you all..

Reading between the lines i think Kimi to McLaren is a done deal.

Like when they annonced Lewis they probably want to wait untill after the season to get extra publicity when previously they would have gotten none, despite the fact everyone knows whats happeneing

Looking up the new date, it falls on Ascension Day weekend. It left me a bit surprised that the original date was NOT on Ascension Day weekend (as Monaco GPs are traditionally scheduled during that weekend).

Spain & Monaco now back to back

Two-week gap to Turkey makes more sense

  • Lukeh09/10/2009 at 15:38

Spain & Monaco now back to back

I'm confused... is the calendar correct or the paragraph?

As a result, there are now two-week gaps either side of the famous street race in the principality as opposed to a 3-week break after Barcelona and, more importantly, a 1-week separation until Istanbul

  • me09/10/2009 at 15:38

Spain & Monaco now back to back

better. but still one too many races.

  • Scott in Italy09/10/2009 at 15:39

that's weird. some was using the wrong calendar to work it all out?

  • Journeyer09/10/2009 at 15:39

Two-week gap to Turkey makes more sense

Which was the reason for the move. If (heaven forbid) Canada falls through, we'll have a 3-week break between Monaco and Turkey (which moves to June 6).

  • Journeyer09/10/2009 at 15:39

Which was the reason for the move. If (heaven forbid) Canada falls through, we'll have a 3-week break between Monaco and Turkey (which moves to June 6).

And ANOTHER 3-week break to Valencia (June 27).

Americanised English can be seen as a bit lazy I suppose

man i'm going to love it there...

  • Bassano Clapper09/10/2009 at 15:40

    Shhh, Canada's not definite yet

We can gladly lose Valencia though

  • Amy09/10/2009 at 15:40

Which was the reason for the move. If (heaven forbid) Canada falls through, we'll have a 3-week break between Monaco and Turkey (which moves to June 6).

they can move anything they want as long as its not Spa or Monza :D

  • Journeyer09/10/2009 at 15:40

that's weird. some was using the wrong calendar to work it all out?

perhaps. BritsOnPole said that it's normally scheduled May 25-ish, but from what I remember, it's always based on Ascension Day weekend (the same weekend on which the Indy 500 is based).

  • Bassano Clapper09/10/2009 at 15:40

And ANOTHER 3-week break to Valencia (June 27).

    Canada June 13

    Valencia June 27

    Two weeks

No GP on my birthday weekend this year now :(

  • Bassano Clapper09/10/2009 at 15:41

    Two weeks

Oh, you mean if Canada falls. I see

  • Journeyer09/10/2009 at 15:41

    Two weeks

    But if Canada falls through,

    Turkey moves to June 6

    Valencia June 27

    Three weeks.

and this is how friday is always a holiday right and so free prac is on the thursday. although that's just a municipality holiday but one i thought was linked to ascension day somehow...

  • Journeyer09/10/2009 at 15:42

    yup, that is correct.

  • Scott in Italy09/10/2009 at 15:44

    yup, that is correct.

not a bad stuff up then. step one - fix monaco and any other races fixed to a holiday. step two - add canada for a few weeks until the next draft comes out. step three - the rest ;)

Did you know Glock's six cm gash under his left knee was caused by a piece of metal that was on the Toyota front wing as ballast! Shocking.

You can just imagine how that ended up there...

Glock said it came in from above idn't he?

  • me09/10/2009 at 15:56

    Really? Interesting...

    from yesterday's daily:

Very impressed with Gary Anderson's rants in AUTOSPORT today...

    ...

His final rant is on safety. Aparently Glock's injuries in Japan were caused by a ballast weight on the front wing which got loose and enterered the footwell. I haven't seen anyone else report this. He wants ballst weights in the front wings banned which is comon sense as they should never have been allowed in the first place. Of course had the OWG/Bridgestone/FIA not got the front tyre widths so badly wrong we would not have ballast weights in the wings.

  • Journeyer09/10/2009 at 15:56

I cant... I thought the survival cell was supposed to completly sealed and really tough?

Sealed from impact, but not from flying debris...

  • Steven Roy09/10/2009 at 17:30

NASA's problem is that they didn't go up there with an Orange Drill

If they Qik Stream it, I'll gladly lend a hand

The probelm is that they had one hit. If that hit didn't chuck up enough dust then the mission failed. If they had 6 or 7 hits or someone with an orage dril and a van with a good heater they can dig all over

  • Bassano Clapper09/10/2009 at 17:31

    that would probably be better

I'm not sure how early I can be there but you can see if Guille or Janna can be there earlier

  • Steven Roy09/10/2009 at 17:32

I would have liked to have seen them hit a flat bit because you are guaranteed dust and they could find out if there is water a metre or two down rather than trying to get it out of deep craters

  • Bassano Clapper09/10/2009 at 17:32

You are going to the moon mob-handed? How many orange drills do you have?

  • jpancoast09/10/2009 at 17:33

I would have liked to have seen them hit a flat bit because you are guaranteed dust and they could find out if there is water a metre or two down rather than trying to get it out of deep craters

They tried a crater because it's not exposed to sunlight (or were trying to hit a spot not exposed to sunlight). They said they got good data, I guess we'll see.

  • guille2306 (in Paris)09/10/2009 at 17:34

I'm not sure how early I can be there but you can see if Guille or Janna can be there earlier

it all depends on what I'm doing (and I don't know what I'm doing...). I can assure I'll be free by 7, and if I finish earlier I can go there

  • Bassano Clapper09/10/2009 at 17:34

They tried a crater because it's not exposed to sunlight (or were trying to hit a spot not exposed to sunlight). They said they got good data, I guess we'll see.

They have some data but the data was supposed to be captured from a 10km high plume of dust that never happened so whatever calculations they were basing things on failed.

The crater had shown up as reflective and the temperature is permanently at -200C so they thought it was water. I assume they hit the crater wall too high up where logical the dust is thinner layer due to gravity

  • Nick09/10/2009 at 17:38

Hello all (I'm not here) I'll be in town in the afternoon, just let me know when you're in the pub & I'll be there. Not yet decided when I'll leave, need to check the train times in the morning.

Ah cool, look forward to seeing you agian :)

  • Janna09/10/2009 at 17:55

    For anyone that cares ;)

Oops I read this "veteran commentator Ian Titchmarsh" as Alan Titchmarsh and was wondering why he would be judging ;)

  • Nick09/10/2009 at 17:56

Saw this earlier. The Oxford English Dictionary shows spellings with a "z" although "s" is common usage. It was on an old episode of Morse where he got all uppity with someone for spelling with an "s".

Most american spellings are technicaly correct. Interestingly it was the brisith who modified the language a lot more than the americans

  • Janna09/10/2009 at 17:56

Lots I think. Anyway am really not here now as I need to tidy up before my friends come round for pink wine & pizza

I've heard many Australians say that they don't actually drink Fosters (which is fine, I don't either, I think it's terrible).

But my question is... what beer IS popular in Australia?

  • Nick09/10/2009 at 17:58

    Nah, much better

Really?I drink it over there, but its far from my favourite, in Aus they say it stands for 'Verry Bad' (& other names, not publishable here)

  • Pat W09/10/2009 at 17:59

This is smoother. Reminds me of Kingfisher.

  • Nick09/10/2009 at 18:00

But my question is... what beer IS popular in Australia?

VB is owned by fosters and is made to pretty much the same recipe. It has a green label instead of a blue one. Its probably the most popular national beer, it comes from Victoria (Victoria Bitter)

Tooheys New is popular in NSW

XXXX (said four X) is popular in queensland

The best beer i found was called cascade and that comes from Tasmania.

  • Bassano Clapper09/10/2009 at 18:04

I don't mind Carlton but in general always tried t find Guinness which is neither great nor prevalent in Oz

"James, I've really enjoyed your blog since launch. Unfortunately it seems the recent changes have made it rather truncated in a lot of RSS readers. Is this intentional?

It seems to be designed to direct traffic to this page rather than read your opinions in the most convenient way to the reader

If that's the case, I fear it'll mean less people will choose to follow your blog"

It should admit it is a professional event, at the moment virtually every athlete from a wealthy country is a professional, and poorer nations cant compete.

I watched one of those events in Edinburgh on TV I think. Good fun. But football is like proper in the olympics, so why not Rugby as well?

  • Jon Waldock09/10/2009 at 19:55

Then the likes of Chris Hoy prance around claiming to be great, when really it was the funding wot won it.

    waitwaitwaitwaitwatiwait....

Chris Hoy was good before the funding kicked in

  • Bassano Clapper09/10/2009 at 19:55

Perhaps your original comment was correct anyway ;)

    Yeah, probably

Golf is hardly a great spectator sport to most

    [sorry Golfers]

  • Pat W09/10/2009 at 19:55

The Olympics have been ruined for ages anyway...

    Only some of it.

    I am a golfer*, and I agree.

    * only technically. to the untrained eye, I am zig-zagging.

Because football isnt a such physicaly intense sport you can have matches 2 or even 3 times a week. Rugby on the other hand requires at least 6 days to recover, there wouldn't be time to do it all. because 7s matches are only 14 mins instead of 80 a lot more of them can be played

  • Bassano Clapper09/10/2009 at 19:57

Whats the best software to use to convert 3gp files so i can use them in premiere?

    Another premiere fan! Yeesh

There are a few decent online converters

It's been too long since I converted media on a pc

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)09/10/2009 at 19:58

    Only some of it.

I must admit I did like watching the athletes, the problem was that there's always a nagging doubt that they might be cheating, which is sad :(

That makes sense now. Disregard what I said then. Possibly worth it then.

Chris Hoy was good before the funding kicked in

Perhaps, but i expect he still had some funding, use of facilities and access to resources.

People from other countries would not have been offered that, so essentialy he has an unfair advantage, and thus it makes no sense for the olympics to remain amateur.

GP2 doesnt pretend to be something its not though.

As I see it, the Olympics would be fairer if they were more professional as they would allow athletes from poorer countries to get sponsorship to the same level that athletes from wealth nations get government support

I disagree - a lot of sports seem to have no chance of getting any funding, so I'm glad that the lottery sponsors them. All athletes deserve the chance to do what they do professionally in order that they can concentrate on getting the best performance and not sponsorship money so they can afford to attend the events.

  • Steven Roy09/10/2009 at 20:22

Why should lottery players finance th likes of Chris Hoy so that he can get a bunch of gold medals, a knighthood and go on to make a million? He wants to be a sportsman then he should finance it. Lottery money was supposed to be for good causes not financing sportsmen

Why should normal working people finance someone who hasa chance of becoming a millionaire if he actually delivers. Normal working people also like pulling for a national sports hero. Why not help them on the way? Pretty good value a fraction of a pound, when another fraction goes to charities and the whole thing can win you money.

  • Nick09/10/2009 at 20:28

That's like saying "Why pay an F1 driver, it just makes it unfair for the small teams who can't afford him?"

Not at all, F1 is a commercial sport. Teams make money and pay their drivers.

The olympis consider themselves to be above that, and instead of people being paid acording to their achivements, there is some crazy international fight to give your athletes an unfair advantage.

Its a bit like watching a race with drug cheats, you can say that guy didnt win because of his tallent, he won because of the drugs, Similairly all this funding means i look at winners and you can see its more to do with their national funding programme, than te fact he is naturaly quicker than the guy from micronesia

They can go and raise their own sponsorship like people in other sports do. If you are a 12 year old racing driver you have to raise your own money with no record behind you. If you are a lottery financed athlete you have enough history to raise the finance

The difference is that in Olympic sports, all the coaches know where to start looking and can have some confidence that there will be enough to fund their ambitions if they're good enough.

If Olympic sports were funded like motorsport, it would be virtually impossible for most of the athletes currently represented to get to Olympic standard and the sport would suffer. The dramatic improvement of the standard in F1 in the past ten years indicates that competitive standards in motorsport would also benefit from guaranteed standard-based funding.

Its about speedway. Local team in playoff match against Edinburgh. 93-93 after two legs. They have decided to put in 3 extra Golden Heats. Winner is the one with the most heat advantage basically. Which is the most ridiculous suggestion ever in the world as it favours the home team sooooo much. They managed to wreck a good match.

  • Alianora La Canta09/10/2009 at 20:49

    Yes but who buys lottery tickets and pays a levy to allow Chris Hoy to get a knoghthood? {Comment #835}

I don't buy lottery tickets on the grounds of mathematical probability, so...

Incidentally Chris Hoy's mum has a royal honour (I think it's an MBE) for her charity work, which neatly dovetails into the lottery's other category of good causes...

  • Alianora La Canta09/10/2009 at 20:55

    Why. The lottery may be 14 million to 1 but it is still the best chance most of us have of never having money problems {Comment #850}

You're still 2.333 times more likely to die of a traffic accident (never mind other causes) than to win. That strikes me as dishonest on the part of the lottery designers (and of the government, which condones such behaviour because it effectively acts as an indirect stealth tax on people who don't calculate probabilities).

  • Steven Roy09/10/2009 at 20:56

So nobody knows where I can get 2008 penalty stats?

  • Alianora La Canta09/10/2009 at 21:08

    They can go and raise their own sponsorship like people in other sports do. If you are a 12 year old racing driver you have to raise your own money with no record behind you. If you are a lottery financed athlete you have enough history to raise the finance {Comment #868}

Unless you happen to have an Olympic gold medal or are extremely lucky (being a home-grown Olympic-level talent isn't enough unless your country's delegation is small), you don't because sponsors aren't interested. The press might be, but only a very limited number of names stick beyond the closing ceremony, and unlike motorsport they don't have another 100 opportunities to make their name stickier before the next round of funding (there's very little money to be made in the levels below the Olympics). The probability of payback for sponsors is so much smaller for Olympic sports than motorsport, so sponsor allowances are bound to be much smaller.

If the Olympics are about showcasing the best sporting performances in the world, then there needs to be a proper mechanism for facilitating that - which at the moment is better preserved by the current system than a sponsorship-only one. There needs to be methods of expanding this to all countries rather than just the prosperous ones, but until the world market system is sorted out that is, pragmatically speaking, not going to happen.

    Motor sport is like any other sport in that the best people don’t necessarily make it. {Comment #877}

The effect in motor sport has reduced considerably since the decline of the pay driver, yet money remains a bigger barrier in motorsport than in other sports. The more secure funding is (from whatever ultimate source) the better a good athlete's chance of making it. This is why any sport relying on sponsorship alone is ultimately never going to reach its utmost potential.

To my mind, the government should be funding a lot of the work charities do centrally by providing better services (lots of charities only exist because of major deficiencies in government provision) rather than through a lottery.

  • startledbunny09/10/2009 at 21:17

The probability of payback for sponsors is so much smaller for Olympic sports than motorsport, so sponsor allowances are bound to be much smaller.

The difference is though in motorsport people are raising hundreds of thousands of pounds as opposed to 20 thousand in athletics, cycling etc. I refuse to believe that anyone who is effectively being paid a salary by the lottery cannot raise the sponsorship. To be that standard they have to have a list of national or international titles behind them. People raise that kind of money for club motor racing championships.

Supprisngly it isnt as much as you would expect. the sales of the other 2 have followed a similar path to the previous generations.

The market for the wii is far far bigger, but the people expected to buy the bigger consoles have done so as well as a wii

Why? Any queries, you know the drill, "Ask SPC" ;)

  • Nick09/10/2009 at 21:52

Has anyone else heard that the Wii is a GameCube with a fancy controller?

It is, it was originaly intended to be an add on for the game cube but they decided to delay it and launch it as a new console

  • Bassano Clapper09/10/2009 at 21:52

They might be good little games, but i am yet to see a mini game i would actualy pay for.

    Worms, Zen Bound & Peggle

  • Pat W09/10/2009 at 21:53

It is also a lot more fun.

  • RG09/10/2009 at 21:53

    Worms, Zen Bound & Peggle

    That it?

I won't lie, the new range of PSP mini's aren't all brilliant, but compared to the amount you have...

  • Alex Andronov09/10/2009 at 21:53

They seem to all be glorified facebook aps,

despite not knowing much about football FIFA 10 on the iPhone is really good. And 6 quid. Expensive for a iPhone app but cheap for a console game.

  • Jon Waldock09/10/2009 at 21:53

Why? Any queries, you know the drill, "Ask SPC" ;)

According to "the internet" you can change the frame colour, but i've tried all i can and it wont work :(

  • Nick09/10/2009 at 21:53

They've reneged on that UMD conversion as well haven't they?

Yeah, that really was silly, i only own a handfull of games and i am not even slightly tempted to upgrade!

  • Gavin Brown (RubberGoat)09/10/2009 at 21:53

They might be good little games, but i am yet to see a mini game i would actualy pay for.

    Worms, Zen Bound & Peggle

There are loads of great games and apps worth paying for! Some are as good as proper console games for a tenth of the price!

  • RG09/10/2009 at 21:53

Yeah, that really was silly, i only own a handfull of games and i am not even slightly tempted to upgrade!

I own a lot and I really don't want to upgrade.

That's 3 that I like and have paid for. Almost every other game I have is free

I'm not even a big gamer

  • startledbunny09/10/2009 at 21:55

It is also a lot more fun.

They decided to go for better playabilty, than better tech specs. Perhaps the other two forgot that. They're trying to make up for it now though.

  • Nick09/10/2009 at 21:55

despite not knowing much about football FIFA 10 on the iPhone is really good. And 6 quid. Expensive for a iPhone app but cheap for a console game.

Someone on Kotaku said the other day that is a game is only worth 20 dollars or less when they sell it new, it isnt worth paying for.

I tend to agree, wipeout HD on the PSN is perhaps the only game i have seen which breaks that rule

  • Alex Andronov09/10/2009 at 21:56

Jon did you see the link from earlier for a website called doctype. Really neat community on HTML you can ask your question and expect a good answer pretty quickly (it was at about 2pm ish earlier for exact link)

  • Bassano Clapper09/10/2009 at 21:57

How many free games does the DS or PSP have?

I like the idea of the big involving games on the other two. Just that I also like a drunken thrash on Mario & Sonic Olympics, or Mario Kart, with people who otherwise would never pick up a controller.

  • Nick09/10/2009 at 21:58

There are loads of great games and apps worth paying for! Some are as good as proper console games for a tenth of the price!

Possibly... the problem i see is, that console games are really expensive to release and probably less than 10% are good. If something is esesntialy free to release, there will be hundreds more games so less than 0.1% will be any good.

Then add in the limited capabilities of small games, it doesnt really appeal to gaming fans.

Much as a cheap american soap may have high drama, but it wont appeal to a film buff

  • Nick09/10/2009 at 22:00

How many free games does the DS or PSP have?

If you buy a psp go you get GT free, but i take your point.

What do you have to lose if you try 10 games for the price of one?

  • RG09/10/2009 at 22:01

How many free games does the DS or PSP have?

There is the homebrew option, but then thats not allowed. So, yeah.

  • startledbunny09/10/2009 at 22:03

Are you playing with CSS, or just HTML?

  • Nick09/10/2009 at 22:03

What do you have to lose if you try 10 games for the price of one?

Because they arent the same type of games. It might entertain me for a couple of mins, but a decent game should give you at least 30-50 hours of play, double that for a console

Its like giving me 10 tickets to watch F2 when all i want is an F1 ticket...

  • Bassano Clapper09/10/2009 at 22:03

    Do did I. In 1995.

  • startledbunny09/10/2009 at 22:09

You can make beer with a PSP?

I think he means DS. There's some kind of memory card plugin you can get. But it's not legal. There was something similar for the SNES (which I've still got in a cupboard somewhere) where games could be loaded from floppy disks.

  • Bassano Clapper09/10/2009 at 22:12

  • Bassano Clapper09/10/2009 at 22:13

There's also Pole Position & Pac Man :)

  • Bassano Clapper09/10/2009 at 22:14

iPod Touch & iPhone's biggest enemy is battery life

  • Nick09/10/2009 at 22:15

The handheld's aren't competing with the consoles

    That is true..

But the psp has similar perfomance levels to a PS2. It has struggled a lot because people didnt know what to do with it (and piracy)

Now they seem to be aiming to use it as a platform interlinked with the console games, for example some of the cars won in GT PSP will be available to you in GT5 (arcade mode i think, but i am not sure)

Little big planet, Assasins creed are also brining out PSP games which will allow you to transfer skills/objects into the console games.

They are also doing the minis, i have no idea what they are about but good luck to them!

I've had days of fun playing Worms

Hehe, I know what you mean :D

I am just trying to say they are different.

  • Pat W09/10/2009 at 22:15

I think its way ahead of the PSP at the moment. PSP is already 4? years old so i expect it will do another 2 before they replace it with a newer model, possibly a phone?

  • Nick09/10/2009 at 22:25

Its the same hardware, it just has internal storage and no UMD drive.

There have been 3 different psp variants before this one, all getting slimmer and better battery life.

Interestingly they are still marketing the PSP-3000 alongside the Go so its meant to be a 'premium' variant i think

  • Bassano Clapper09/10/2009 at 22:25

    Ah ok

  • Nick09/10/2009 at 22:26

It also allows you to connect a ps3 contoller to it and use it on a tv with video out which is pretty cool.

  • startledbunny09/10/2009 at 22:27

I'm happy with my iPod Nano with Tetris, Sudoku, Yahtzee etc.

  • Nick09/10/2009 at 22:29

It has been an interesting Debate. Sony did a lot wrong with the PSP, they had no real plan and probably got distracted when the PS3 did so badly for a year.

The success of The DS probably didnt help either, and i think that might have been what prompted apple to focus it as a gaming device.

It could be quite interesting though to see what happens now, augmenting console games could be quite interesting, but i am not convinced

  • startledbunny09/10/2009 at 22:30

    And Space Invaders.

I think Sony got it right with the PS1 and PS2, but were behind with the PSP and PS3. Microsoft and Nintendo came out earlier and beat them.

Jackie Stewart did his best drive ever wearing a wrist brace. Drivers cope with injuries.

  • startledbunny09/10/2009 at 23:05

I wonder how far De Ferran would have gone in F1 with the right breaks.

I read in Autosport that he had an F1 test lined up years ago but got injured getting ready to drive the car? So long ago though, could have got it wrong.

I read in Autosport that he had an F1 test lined up years ago but got injured getting ready to drive the car? So long ago though, could have got it wrong.

He was certainly good enough to be tested by F1 teams. I don't remember any particular stories but he went through the Stewart stircase of talent so he would not have been short of contacts in F1. The problem they had is that Stewart produced so many good drivers in a short spell who were F1 standard that a lot of them like deFerran, Franchitti etc just never got a chance and Magnussen got plenty of chances and blew them.

stewart was never as fast as the competition..luck played into his hands, he was always in the best piece of machinery

The BRM in 1965 when he won his first race with a world champion as his team mate was not the best car. It was nowhere close to the Lotus.

In 1968 when he won at the Nurburgring by four minutes in the fog and rain with his wrist in a splint the car had very little to do with the result.

Jackie Stewart not fast? You cannot be serious.
